In the past, the Architecture Review Committee rewarded one business and two residences that stood out for architectural design. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the awarding for Excellence in Architectural Design was not given for several years. People have friends and acquaintances. People have guests. People have strangers come to their home to deliver things or do work for them. Who’s going to run a background check on a new girl or boyfriend before they can come to the house?

Keeping America Safe There really is no higher priority for government at every level than keeping people safe. When people are in jeopardy, nothing else can matter more than putting an end to the threat. Sometimes, as in the case of an active shooter or bombing incident, government has to react quickly to stop the attack and get people out of danger. Today we are faced with a different kind of threat that requires a very different response. I’m speaking of the plan to open housing at Naval Weapon Station Earle in Colts Neck Township to the general public. This plan is based on the terms of a contract with the private company that owns the housing. The terms of that deal allows the housing to be offered to the public if, at the end of a progression of priorities that begins with offering it to active service personnel and proceeds down through contractors, the homes are still empty. Then the Navy puts applicants from the public through a background check designed to weed out people on terror watch lists or with criminal convictions. If they have a clean record, then they’ll get to roll right through the main gate.

The problems with this plan are very clear. Just think of how many people who’ve committed terrorist acts have had clean records – have “self-radicalized” on their home computer and built explosive devices using plans found on the internet. These people have been invisible to the authorities until it was too late. Now imagine someone like that having access to NWS

Now you may think I’m just being an alarmist and no one else sees this potential. If you think that, you would be wrong. The Defense Department’s Inspector General issued a report in April of this year revealing the results of a review of this process. What was found was alarming. The study was limited to three randomly selected bases and found that either the vetting process was inadequate or not being fully implemented. The inspector General said “As a result DOD assumed a higher security risk to military personnel, their dependents, civilians and assets.” It called the lack of screening a national security risk. And none of those bases were filled with munitions like NWS Earle or played the vital supply mission this base does.

There simply is only one way to guarantee the security of the base, its personnel and its mission. That’s to end the practice that looked like good business in simpler, safer times when enemies wore military uniforms, were thousands of miles away, and threats were easily recognized and addressed. We need to adapt our policies to the times we live in now. Whether that means changing the terms of the contract to prohibit the general public from getting this housing or buying it up and tearing it down, it should be done. It will cost money, but the potential costs and consequences we would experience if the worst case came true, far outweigh any possible price in dollars. On this there can be no compromise. I urge everyone to speak out on this to their elected officials at every level. It is a policy that needs to be changed for the security of the nation and the safety of the public. This is a case where prevention is the only certain cure.

LILLIAN G. BURRY, Monmouth County Freeholder Holmdel Turf Fields a Bad Idea The Holmdel Township Committee hastily passed a bond ordinance of $3.3 million in September for upgrades to Cross Farm Park. The improvement plan for the park, as recommended by the Township Committee’s newly appointed Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC), is to construct two artificial turf fields for soccer/ lacrosse play, expand parking facilities, add a toddler playground, possibly 80-foot lighting towers and new bathroom facilities. The question on many people’s minds is whether these fields are needed. There are no meeting notes from the RAC or data made available to the public that support the need for expansion of this park. Nor is there a breakdown of costs for this project related to construction of the fields and their yearly or long-term maintenance. Considering that these fields need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years with an associated million-dollar price tag attached, it is important that the taxpayers of Holmdel get the accurate facts and numbers.

The Holmdel Township Committee tried at a recent meeting

to appease the uproar from residents who think this plan is too extravagant. They reported that the funds for this project would come from the Township’s Open Space Fund, which was created for the purpose of protecting our open space since southern Holmdel is located on the watershed of the Swimming River Reservoir. This fund should be used as originally intended- to protect our open space and our water supply- not used to please a minority of Holmdel residents who feel that they need better recreation facilities in town.

REGINA CRISCIONE | Holmdel I am writing to express my concerns with the Holmdel Township Committee proposal to spend $3.3 million dollars to create two synthetic turf fields at Cross Farm park. While I favor excellent facilities for our youth to pursue athletics and other recreational activities, this is a significant expenditure that is largely unnecessary and will primarily benefit just the private soccer and lacrosse clubs in our town. Cross Farm currently has 13 soccer fields. Across the street at the Village School there are at least 3 lacrosse fields. These fields well serve our township youth. There are also many other opportunities for improvements that would be less costly and more broadly beneficial such as infrastructure improvements at the Holmdel Pool Club, high school stadium lighting upkeep, upgrades to tennis courts, or improving drainage at the Cross Farm baseball fields. The Holmdel Township Committee claims that there will be no new taxes for this. But these fields are being paid for with township money, require ongoing upkeep, and are an expenditure of money that could be better spent. In an era in which my taxes have increased 25% in the last 4 years, when we have closed one of the firehouses in our town, and the township committee has considered selling off open space to raise money, this kind of expenditure is totally inappropriate. The main beneficiary of the $3,300,000 expenditure are the private soccer clubs, in which Eric Hinds, our mayor, is a leader. Furthermore, the Township Committee has been less than forthcoming about this initiative. There is no concrete plan made available, there is no identification of what the ongoing maintenance cost will be, nor a plan for what the ultimate Cross Farm area will become. It is likely that this 3.3 million-dollar expenditure is just the down payment on something much larger. I find it ironic that in Holmdel, a primarily Republican town, tax and spend has become the modus operandi.

Holmdel Girls Tennis Team Recognized Holmdel Girls Tennis Team was recognized at the October Township Committee Meeting for their accomplishments. The Holmdel High School Girls Tennis team won the NJ Sectional Champions Central Group II title and the NJ State Group II Championship title.

The Holmdel Township Committee agreed unanimously to show its support for the Police Department and Law Enforcement in general. Police form a ‘blue line’, and stand and protect the Community. We wanted to remind people of that truism by painting a blue line down the center of Crawfords Corner Road. Many communities throughout the County and the State have made similar gestures.

Bell Works Tours It has truly been my pleasure to host several tours of the iconic Bell Labs building, now Bell Works. Somerset Development has now filled over 650,000 square feet and more to come! Our tours are very informative and we end each tour with a stop into the space which will house our township library, which we are VERY excited about. It will be a state-of-the-art library at 16,000 square feet – a vast difference from the library space we have now. I am very happy to announce that in addition to the 99-year lease agreement with Somerset of $0.00 to house our library, we have just negotiated with them to contribute over $1 million dollars towards the construction of our of our new Holmdel Library coming at the end of 2017 to its new address: 101 Crawfords Corner Road…Very exciting! Town Hall Tours – HFEE and Girl Scouts On October 11, 2016 - five winners of the HFEE “Backstage Tour of Holmdel” came to Town Hall to have lunch with the Mayor and find out more about how the township works. They were also treated to a VIP tour of our Police Department thanks to Lieutenant Keith Cannata. The Girl Scouts inquired for a similar tour to earn their Inside Government badge and I was happy to help. Lieutenant Jeffrey Ackerson helped out with the Police tour for the girls. It’s wonderful for the younger residents in our community to learn all about their town!

This is your willingness to try the untried. And ironically, it is the least exploited success key. If you've never listed creativity as one of your personal goals, you are in good company. Most of us learned how not to be creative before we had a chance to prove how creative we might be. We were at one point in our lives seeking social acceptance and were conditioned to become as much like everyone around us, striving to become carbon copies of the others around us to “fit in”. We learn most of our first lessons in life with the words NO and DON'T (can you hear your parents saying it?). Any of us could make an extensive list of the things we’re told not to do. This all has a purpose of course. We cannot have a society without rules, structure and discipline - unfortunately rules of conduct tend to overlap rules of thinking. Most of us believe because we were taught that there are rules for conduct, dressing, standing in line, and thinking. Throughout history independent thinking is often associated with being unique or different. For many years only a daring few ventured beyond the boundaries of independence. Only a few of each generation have dared to stand by themselves and "think different", DaVinci, Salk, Pasteur, Jobs. There's a list of probably a few thousand out of what could have been millions - who chose to believe it as easier to stay inside the lines of the coloring book or to think as others thought, and never search for a better way. Most of the eminently successful people we read about in history books were not geniuses - IQ has had little to do with our successful representatives of the human race. One thing that most, if not all of them have in common, is an overwhelming desire to try new ideas, TAKE RISKS, create new alternatives, and to use a small portion of

A Country Christmas Presented by The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee Historic Montrose School at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive in Colts Neck will open for a traditional Christmas celebration this December.

Photos with Santa Claus, seasonal refreshments, exclusive Colts Neck gift items, and more will fill the historic Montrose one-room schoolhouse from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11, 2016. The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee is sponsoring this free, traditional holiday fest at the school at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive. Santa Claus will take time out from his busy schedule to pose for free photos taken by guests who should bring their own cameras. Seasonal goodies, hot chocolate, and cider will be provided. The fir tree outside the school, is to be replaced by Chris Short, and will be lit during the afternoon. A small Christmas tree in-

side the school will be festooned with decorations appropriate to the period. In addition to its popular maps depicting Colts Neck historic sites, (suitable for framing, $15 each), the committee will be selling its line of commemorative glassware featuring Montrose School and Bucks Mill, created exclusively for the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee. Items include a set of four coasters ($30), eight-inch plates ($20 each), and hanging ornaments/ sun catchers ($10 each); all pre-wrapped for gift giving. “Our Christmas open house last year was so popular, many have asked us to repeat it,” said Committee Chairperson Lillian Burry, a Monmouth County Freeholder and former Colts Neck Mayor. “Everyone on the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee enjoys preparing and opening Montrose School for special events that highlight our township’s unique role in American history and help keep our local history alive for future generations. We invite everyone to share in the warmth and historic significance of Montrose School during this community celebration.” Mrs. Burry negotiated the purchase of the school, the only publicly-owned one-room schoolhouse in Colts Neck, for $1 from the township’s former Historical Society over a decade ago. The committee raises funds to continue to upgrade and maintain the school.

PREPARATION OA K FOR H I L L AC A DE M Y Continues Tradition Of Honoring Veterans OL & BEYOND ON NOVEMBER 9, 2016, Oak Hill Academy students, staff, and parents honored veterans during the school’s 15th annual Veterans Day program. Over 100 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade performed by creating various tributes, doing dramatic readings, choreographing dance ensembles, singing, and playing instruments. Alumni students came back to perform, as well as, a professional brass duo, and the Christian Brothers Academy Pipes and Drums. Patrice Murray, Director of Personnel/Administration, organized the annual program. Each year, she chooses a theme that will educate the students on a different aspect relating to the service of our veterans. This year, the themes were “Respect for our Flag”, “Respecting and Supporting our Military”, “History of the Ghost Army,” “Ministry in the Military,” and “Military Dogs and Service Dogs,” amongst the traditional core themes of “Who is a Veteran,” and the “History of Veterans Day”. Started in November of 2001 after the tragic events of September 11, Murray stated that “we (as a school) decided to recognize and honor those in the military who fought, and are still fighting, for our freedom and protection.” The Veterans Day program has become an important tradition at Oak Hill Academy. The youngest generation is learning about all of our veterans and the greatest generation, too. They have learned to honor, respect and revere those in uniform.

BENJAMIN KULESHOV AND ABHAY RAO, students from Holmdel, were honored as some of the brightest middle school students in the world at an international awards ceremony sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The Center honored Benjamin and Abhay, students at William R. Satz School, for their exceptional performance on the SAT, ACT, or similar college-readiness assessment taken as part of the 2015-16 CTY Talent Search. CTY uses above-grade-level testing to identify advanced students from around the world and provide a clear picture of the students’ true academic abilities. In addition, Abhay Rao also qualified for CTY's Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent by scoring 700 or higher on the math or verbal section of the SAT under the age of 13. This year, more than 27,000 students in second through eighth grades participated in CTY’s Talent Search, representing all 50 states and more than 60 countries. “Students, your excellent test scores are what brought us here today, but this is a celebration of what is behind those scores: a love of learning, a strong work ethic, and a high value placed on taking risks and welcoming challenges,” said Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of CTY. “These are qualities that will provide you with many opportunities in the years ahead as you continue to grow as students and scholars.”

The Community YMCA Launches Holiday Gift Drive Program Helps Make the Holiday Season Merry for Needy Families Local residents and businesses are invited to help make the holidays brighter for struggling families in Monmouth County by giving to The Community YMCA’s annual holiday gift drive. Coordinated by the Y’s Counseling and Social Services branch, “the gift drive helps to ensure that many of the county’s neediest children and their families can experience the joy and surprise of the holiday season”, said Colleen Verriest, Vice President of Counseling & Social Services. “Strengthening families is at the heart of all we do at The Community YMCA,” Verriest said. “The donated gifts bring great happiness to the children and families who we serve, many of whom are victims of abuse, neglect, in the foster care system or who have special needs.” In 2015, the Y was able to distribute more than $64,000 in gifts to 428 children served by the Y’s Counseling and Social Services branch, thanks to the community’s generous support. “There are many ways to support the holiday gift drive”, said Coordinator Danielle Formica, noting that all gifts are personally delivered to the families and are tax-deductible. "Toast to Dennis- A Night of Remembrance” Raises $225,000 to Support Returning Veterans

Nearly 300 people attended the 8th annual Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund gala “A Toast to Dennis – A Night of Remembrance” held on September 23, 2016 at the Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club. The event celebrated the life and memory of Zilinski, as well as honored those from Monmouth County who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. A sit-down dinner, dancing with music by The Infernos and a reverse auction were part of the festivities and were held to assist the Fund in sponsoring service dogs for warriors suffering from PTSD and/or traumatic brain injuries. A total of $225,000 was raised from the event including six attendees who sponsored a service dog for $15,000 each. Other donations allowed the organization to sponsor two more service dogs bringing the total to date to 38. Distinguished honorees were Randy and Maureen McDonald of Red Bank, Joseph and Miriam Tort of Rumson and Quentin and Ellen Walsh of Sarasota, Fla. for their dedication and continued support of the mission and continued growth of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund.

Over 2,000 volunteers work year-round to make a difference in the lives of adults and children in need. The Humane Society of the United States encourages pet lovers to reach out and support their local shelters and rescue groups during this holiday season. Approximately 3,500 animal shelters across the United States serve the estimated 6 to 8 million homeless animals who need refuge each year, and many more animals find themselves in need of the services provided by local rescue groups. Here are ten ways to celebrate. Pick the activity, and you don’t have to stop at just one that appeals to you. Then ask your friends, coworkers, classmates, and family to join you in celebrating the people who help make life better for the animals and people in your community. 1.

Share your love. Tell the world how you feel about your local shelter or rescue by sharing their posts and pictures online.

2. Get to know your local shelters and rescue groups. Locate the facilities in your area at theshelterpetproject.org. You may be surprised how many groups nearby are helping animals. 3.

Learn before you leap. Before you adopt, do your research. You’ll be much less likely to become

frustrated if you understand the challenges and rewards of adopting a pet beforehand. 4.

Say “thanks!” Take a minute to express your gratitude to the people who work at your local shelter or rescue groups. If you’ve adopted a pet, provide an update and picture.

Get crafty. Combine fabric, yarn, recyclables, and imagination to bring much-needed fun into the lives of local shelter and rescue pets. There’s no end to the toys you can make!

Make wishes come true. Shelters and rescue groups always need towels, toys, and other supplies. Check their websites for wish lists or call them to find out what’s in short supply.

8. Volunteer. Even if you can’t adopt a pet just now, you can help make life better for homeless animals by volunteering with your local shelter or rescue organization.

Help at your own home. Outfit your cats and dogs with collars and proper ID (a microchip and ID tags) at all times. As soon as you bring them into your family, have all of your pets spayed or neutered. Keep your cats indoors where you can keep them safe (though it’s great to take them on walks if they are comfortable on a harness and leash), and keep dogs on leashes when off your property.

10. Help your shelter save more lives. You and your family might consider fostering an animal who may not thrive in a shelter environment. This in turn will open more space to save additional lives. By supporting your local shelter or rescue, you will join a network of hundreds of thousands of people working to make the world safe and more humane for all living creatures. recently had the privilege of meeting one such masterpiece. Like discovering great art, some of life’s simple pleasures are discovering our neighbors, learning their backgrounds, finding out how we are similar, and celebrating our differences. John R. Green, an awardwinning Executive Producer of Special Programming at ABC News, and Anthony LaBate, a designer of unique jewelry for La’Bate Jewelry, live in Holmdel. It turns out Matt Damon is one of his favorite celebrities. They met on GMA. Matt was there to promote a movie and he chose to sit in the main Green Room instead of a reserved private one. There, he met a teenage guest who struggled with obesity and learned she was promoting a camp to help others. John witnessed Matt Damon approach the young girl and genuinely become fascinated with her story, saw Matt offer to visit the camp and John concluded, “That is a great guy.” Over the years, John collaborated frequently with news anchor Robin Roberts and one of the most moving specials was “Robin’s Journey,” documenting the ABC anchor’s battle with cancer. John’s legendary energy is now channeled into a new venture with Robin. He is the Executive VP of Programming & Development for “Rock n’ Robin Productions,” managing daily operations and the editorial and creative content for every type of show imaginable for networks, cable and online audiences. When asked about a “dream project” he would like to create, he mentioned his love for musical theater and his desire to present live musical theater for a wide television audience. In actuality, he already is fulfilling his true, more serious dream, and that is to cover stories about cancer research, treatment, prevention and early detection. As a survivor of cancer, John experienced firsthand the toll the disease takes. “Yes it’s great to do journalism when it entertains people, it’s great to do television that entertains - that can also be therapeutic - but really giving hardcore information that can help people live healthier or extend their lives, or get treatments that they need, especially with a life

threatening illness like cancer, that to me feels like the purpose I went into journalism.” To that end, he and Robin just launched “Cutting Edge of Cancer” for WebMD. The passion for cancer research also is reflected in Anthony’s career creating unique jewelry. Anthony finds inspiration all around him and his signature piece is the Francesca cuff, named for his mother who miraculously battled back from stage four lung cancer. Its butterfly motif in diamonds and colorful gems symbolize hope, and a portion of the proceeds is donated to cancer research. His appreciation for precious stones and designing began at a very young age. Imagine his Brooklyn grade school teacher’s surprise when Anthony completed the assignment to bring a sample mineral to class and showed up with his father’s triple diamond ring! His designing talents were first focused more on high fashion evening wear and bridal gowns. After working in Paris, he returned to New York and started Francesca Couture. He gained further acclaim when he created a $300,000 diamond encrusted wedding gown for a private client, even making it into “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.” (The diamonds were eventually used for jewelry.)

More locally, the irrepressible Anthony showcased his lines at a launch party in Red Bank at Gotham last month. Over one hundred guests poured over his creations, while mingling, enjoying food, drinks and a DJ. On the spur of the moment, Anthony took the microphone. He quickly organized a “Mannequin Challenge” and the loud upbeat partiers stopped - and struck a pose. This joy for life and playful spirit is reflected in his creations and in his child rearing philosophy.

Throughout my time with them, Anthony and John reflected on family life, while simultaneously laughing, dressing the children, gathering snacks and taking turns for the twins’ bathroom runs. All this is possible because they met through a mutual friend and have been together over fifteen years. Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Hosts Inaugural Benefit for Bayshore Oktoberfest Celebration

Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation hosted the inaugural Benefit for Bayshore Oktoberfest Celebration on October 7, 2016, welcoming more than 200 guests and raising more than $105,000 in support of Bayshore’s plans to enhance emergency services. The tented cocktail reception uniquely took place on the hospital’s campus at 727 North Beers Street in Holmdel and raised more funds than any other signature fundraising event in the hospital’s history.

Lions Serve Up Pancakes & Family Fun at Annual Breakfast The Colts Neck Lions Club held its annual Pancake Breakfast on October 29, 2016 at the Colts Neck Reformed Church. Families were treated to family fun with prizes, raffles, children dressed up in costumes and a delicious breakfast cooked up by the Lions. The community of Saint Leo the Great School celebrated the Feast of Saint Leo the Great on November 9, 2016. The day began with the celebration of mass led by pastor Father John Folchetti. To help prevent cavities and other unpleasantries associated with excess sugar consumption, the dental office offered its 6th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, a few days after “trick or treat” day. Children brought their excess spoils in exchange for $1 per pound turned in, flashing toothbrushes and snacks. “All collected candy was boxed up and sent to troops overseas,” said Dr. Julia Cintron. The children also wrote letters to the soldiers to include with the packages. “Most youngsters were willing to part with their candy, with some even turning down the money.” The event yielded 208 pounds of candy. Ronnie Miccuilla of American Recreational Military Services (ARMS.org) will make sure that the candy gets to our troops in individualized packages. The employees of this Lincroft practice donated toothbrushes and floss so the candy could be enjoyed without guilt. The event was cosponsored by Comcast Spotlight. Drs. olts Neck Cares held a special fundraiser for Vicki Christensen on November 11, 2016 at the Colts Neck Inn Steak and Chophouse. Vicki is a 30-year-old local woman who is battling an aggressive cancer. She is the niece of Kimberly Clemente, who is a member of Colts Neck Cares. Patricia Ronca, Chair of this fundraiser and founder of Colts Neck Cares worked closely with co-founder Virginia Marshall on the event. “Colts Neck Cares is a group of caring residents in Colts Neck who are dedicated to helping those who are in-need who are often forgotten right in our own backyard. Through fundraisers and generous donations, we hope to lend support to those who need it most,” said Ronca.

Vicki’s cousin explained her diagnosis. “For those of you who don’t know, my very close cousin Vicki was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2013. Since her diagnosis, it has been a never ending battle. From countless surgeries to radiation to chemotherapy to having a PEG placed for nutrition - this disease has prevented her doing what she always dreamed of doing - working, having a family, and all the other life

She is truly a beautiful soul and the strongest fighter I know!” She added that, “Sadly, there is no cure for this aggressive and ravaging disease.” Over 100 people attended the fundraiser including community members, Senator Jennifer Beck, and prominent members of the business community. Sponsors of the event who also attended included Robert Defalco, Sakoutis Disposal, Dr. Young, Sayrewood Florist (who provided all the floral arrangements) and Fitzpatrick Printing that donated the programs, noted Ronca. The talented band “West End Dogs” donated their time and played a mix of rock and roll favorites all night. Hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and dancing were enjoyed by the guests. Desserts were provided by Cake & Co., Abbate Bakery of Matawan and Booskerdoo in Asbury Park. A few of the auction items at the fundraiser were a seven-day trip to St. Lucia; tickets to Count Basie; an Invisalign treatment; gift certificates for laser and Botox treatments by local plastic surgeons; a golf outing and lunch at Eagle Oaks, as well as Rangers and

Giants tickets with signed memorabilia. Ronca noted that the 50/50 raffle raised $1,600 and the winner received $800. “It was a successful event,” said Ronca. Other members of the Colts Neck Cares committee include Abbey FeilerKober, Tara Buss, Sheila Olt, Trisa Satter, Lisa Laurence, Sunny Rudko, and many other wonderful volunteers. Ronca added that other people who assisted on this particular fundraiser were Vicki’s best friend Alexis Antonelli, Mary Ann Savettiere, and Stephanie Cudney. “Vicki just got out of a treatment at Sloan and was able to make it to the event. She was overwhelmed by the love and support in the room that night. I thanked her for her courage and inspiration as she never shows anything but a positive attitude to all those that know her. I assured her on behalf of our community, although her battle is long and painfully frustrating, she is not alone. We are with her every step of the way as she battles this terrible illness. We may not be able to cure this disease but through love, support, positive energy and prayer - we are fighting with her. All of the committee members were happily onboard to support Vicki’s fight,” said Ronca.

A HOLMDEL STUDENT’S MARTIAL ARTS JOURNEY During the summer of 2016, Holmdel High School’s Jason Zheng, currently a sophomore, traveled around the country competing a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts known as Wushu. He was selected to be part of the U.S national team and represented U.S. attending the 11th Pan-American Wushu Championships. The movement in Wushu mimics gymnastic floor routine and dance. Competitors are judged out of 10 points based on mechanical, jump, and general execution within the performance. A Wushu competition has five different types of events: long fist (changquan), broadsword (daoshu), straight sword (jianshu), staff (gunshu), and spear (qiangshu). Each event

is further divided into heats based on age and gender. In early July, Jason competed in the U.S. Wushu Team Trials in San Jose, California. His specified competition group (male, ages 13-15) consisted a total of 42 well trained athletes from all around the country. After two days of competitions, Jason and five other athletes were selected to form a U.S. National Team (of his age group). From August 8 through 14, 2016, Jason was representing the U.S. to compete at the 11th Pan-American Wushu Championships in Lubbock, Texas. This event was hosted by the United States of America Wushu-Kungfu Federation (USAWKF). There were athletes from twenty-three countries competing at the championships. Jason competed in three events and obtained two gold medals (straight sword and spear). Jason is going to continue his martial arts career and will compete at major events around the nation. He would like to have opportunities to represent the U.S., attending more international competition events in the future.

Elections were held for 2017 CNBA Executive Board; the officers will be Sue Fitzpatrick, President; Greg Calderaro and Patty Vollherbst, Vice Presidents, Dino Nicoletta, Treasurer; Sheila Olt, Corresponding Secretary, and Alison Antenucci, Recording Secretary. The upcoming December 14th meeting will be held at the festively decorated Colts Neck Town Hall, and will be a brief business meeting, followed by a holiday breakfast.

RBC Athletes Commit to Continue Athletic Careers at Collegiate Level ON NOVEMBER 9, 2016 - eleven Red Bank Catholic studentathletes officially signed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Candles on the Memory Tree signify a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living recipient. His/her name will be inscribed in a special “Memory” book, which will be on display in the Church Gathering Space. The joyous tree lighting ceremony will take place after the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Chabad Jewish Center Upcoming Happenings Police Appreciation Day/ Chanukah Celebration

Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel is inviting the entire community to a unique Chanukah Celebration, a special ceremony honoring the Police departments of Colts Neck, Middletown and Holmdel (which is Celebrating 50 years of serving our community with honor, integrity and commitment). Come out and stand with the men and women in blue who protect and serve our community December 26, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the Holmdel Firehouse, located at 35 West Main Street. Everyone will have a chance to help paint a giant Menorah blue, take a picture with a police officer and enjoy holiday food followed by a menorah lighting and a grand game of Dreidel. “Whatever one’s political outlook or party affiliation may be, I think we can all agree that these men and women put their lives on the line for us every single day,” says Rabbi Shmaya Galperin, Executive Director of Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel, who is coordinating the effort. “How quickly so many have forgotten 9/11 when police officers ran into those towers to save lives, many losing their own lives in the process. This is behavior police officers exhibit all the time. They are heroes in our midst who safeguard our laws and our safe, decent and peaceful way of life.”

The event is free of charge and open to the entire community. Public dignitaries and community leaders will attend the ceremony and will assist in kindling the Menorah in blue.

OAK HILL STUDENTS ACHIEVE MUCH SUCCESS For students at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft, the fall is a busy time. Not only are students attending classes, playing on sports teams, and enjoying Halloween; they are also involved with the many extra-curricular offerings at the school. In fact, over a twoweek period, these Oak Hill students were rewarded for their efforts with many awards. It began on October 21, 2016 when the school once again competed at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) Academic Jeopardy Tournament. Teams of four to six students play a traditional game of Jeopardy with five rounds being played. Trophies are awarded to the top three teams. Oak Hill had three teams place in the top five and four teams in the top ten. Receiving a trophy for being the second place team were 7th graders: Aarya Doshi, Alex Mitchell, Elizabeth Wright, Maria Giannakopoulos, and Molly Jain.

Then a group of 17 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders competed in a regional round of the Mathleague Competition at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton on October 29, 2016. Oak Hill Academy was the second place school among the ten that participated! The team of Thibaut Fabricant, Michael Gao, Robert Schweikert, and Audrey Yan came in second place. In the fifth grade, Mitchell Oldham won the 4th place individual trophy and Karan Patnaik came in 7th place. In the sixth grade, Michael Gao won the 2nd place individual trophy, Thibaut Fabricant was 7th, and Robert Schweikert was 10th. Eight Oak Hill students advanced to the Mathleague state competition in the spring. They are Mitchell Oldham, Karan Patnaik, Isabelle Darman, Thibaut Fabricant, Michael Gao, Cadence Li, Robert Schweikert, and Audrey Yan.

Finally, on Friday, November 4, 2016, Oak Hill Academy took a group of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders to participate in the Christian Brothers Academy’s Model United Nations competition. The students did a tremendous job preparing and presenting as was evident by the six individual awards bestowed! Oak Hill Academy received the most awards out of all of the schools at the Model UN Conference. Oak Hill had the largest contingent of students participate and were complimented for their preparedness and seriousness. Receiving awards were: Sydney Yan (Holmdel): Best Position Paper (1st out of 125 students); Mason Garber (Colts Neck): Best Delegate (1st Place) – SpecPol; Nicholas Geissler (Middletown): Best Delegate (1st Place) - Carter Cabinet; Cakie Dym (Rumson): Outstanding Delegate (2nd place) – SpecPol; Emily Robertson (Holmdel): Outstanding Delegate (2nd place) – SocHum; Alexander Mitchel (Red Bank): Honorable Mention (3rd Place) – Kennedy Cabinet

OPERATION: FEED THE SAILORS LOCAL CHURCH PROVIDES THANKSGIVING DINNER FOR SERVICE MEN & WOMEN On November 22, 2016, Colts Neck Community Church embarked on Operation: Feed the Sailors, in which they provided some men and women at Naval Weapons Station Earle with a home cooked Thanksgiving meal. The church’s goal was to show their support for these sailors who sacrifice so much and often spend their holidays away from family. Members of Colts Neck Community Church brought dishes, cooked ham, sliced turkey and served as waiters to say they are thankful for our sailors. Captain Jay Steingold and Petty Officer Trevor Larson were the church’s phenomenal hosts and partners in this event. Pastor Chris Durkin thanked the sailors for their service and reminded them, “This Thanksgiving GRACE can transform our attitudes into true gratitude.” The church also handed out 45 free frozen turkeys to Naval families for them to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day. community at large. Mr. Daniele served as an assistant prosecutor (1968-1974) and sat as a Newark Municipal Judge for 27 years (1979-2006). Mr. Daniele was awarded the Newark Peace Prize in 1991. As a Judge, Mr. Daniele was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Municipal Court Practice Committee. He has instructed college-level legal courses at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Christmas Events “A Living Nativity” December 17, 2016 at 5:30 & 6:30 p.m. Remember the reason for the season this Christmas by witnessing a live, outdoor dramatization of the Christmas story! Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights THE COMPLEX: CAPITOLINE, L A LOTERIA & THE BOND STREET BAR & GRILL The FoodSpy ventures from the predictable and goes a little rogue. After all, how many American and Italian restaurants can we continuously write about (and you read about)? We were reluctant, because people are creatures of habit, and tend to frequent restaurants from a shortlist of trusted favorites (don’t you consistently get Chinese food and pizza from the same places?). It’s our goal to maybe get you to add one of our tasty reviews to your “go-to list”. So the FoodSpy has been spending in Asbury Park. The cool, hipster yet retro feel of the town is easy to get used to like a new pair of REALLY comfortable shoes. And the town is littered with great places to eat, drink and just hang out, as the cultural energy beams from the storefronts like light through a stained glass onto the sidewalks. One of the coolest, most unique and comfortable places opened its doors, affectionately called THE COMPLEX. This brilliant concept destination is the brainchild of Patrick Fasano aided by his daughter Anna. Pat is a man who, along with a few others, almost singlehandedly re-gentrified the Beach Area of Asbury and made it cool, clean and safe. They believed for decades that Asbury was a gem – and they turned out to be right! The Complex is actually a triad of restaurants – Capitoline (Italian), La Loteria (Mexican) and The Bond Street Bar & Grill (classic American Bar). All of this interconnected via staircases and hallways to a great underground basement bar, where crowds spill before and after dinner. Capitoline which takes its name from the Roman hills and wall, feature’s fare in the ilk of grandma’s cooking, with square pizza slices that capitalizes on the two edged crusts and array of large fresh salads. It’s kind of like being at your grandma’s house when you were a kid – everyone runs upstairs to eat and then back down in the basement to hangout. The chefs meet daily to coordinate seasonal specials. The combined theme to all the Complex bars is simple and fresh. You must try the secret family recipes for the meatballs. The salads are cool and creative – we particularly liked the Mediterranean salad –coupled with the refreshing Romulus cocktail with muddled blueberries and basil. And the cornerstone is the great pizzas, lovingly crisp with fresh toppings. (Here’s a little secret – Fasano was the one who built Porta, all the rage in Asbury including the killer kitchen and pizza menu) La Loteria pays homage to the a la carte Mexican style taqueria. Its name is based on the popular bingo-like Mexican game of chance. As research, Anna Fasano and General Manager Charlie Interrante traveled across the nation and to Mexico for inspiration. What resulted, in terms of décor, is a clean modern take on vintage artifacts, reconditioned by Fasano’s construction team. The Loteria menu is clean and simple and far above average on the tasty scale. Highly recommend is the Roast Corn in the Mason Jar, any of the variety tacos that involve meat. And the fish Fish Tacos are as good as any place in San Diego. As good as the food is, the service and attention are exceptional. The Bond Street Bar has been there for years, and ask anybody that knows Asbury – this is one of the best burgers around. Quite frankly, this is one of the best “local pubs” ever. The four-cheese grilled cheese is memorable. Again, the “simple theme” crosscuts the place like a basket for fries. Good music, friendly bartenders, cheap drinks – the definition of a perfect dive bar! But the food is not the only fascinating thing about THE COMPLEX. What makes all three restaurants interesting is the design along with the use of local and repurposed materials. Local residents seeking a bit of nostalgia during a night on the town will find it here. Items include a chandelier hanging over the stairway to the basement which is made from a pin setter salvaged from Asbury Lanes. In the Basement Bar, there is a washing machine door taken from a machine from Sam Wha’s Laundry (and the door opens, allowing servers to pass food through to the bar). Anna, an artist and a sculptor, designed the two new restaurants and helped her father pick out materials. What caught our eye was the large stained glass piece acquired from the old Merchants National Bank. Fasano’s artists/carpenters personally made the furnishings inside the restaurants. Everything is handmade, including the bar stool - it’s all reclaimed building material from the area – not only amazing, but priceless! The restaurants are on Cookman, Mattison and Bond streets respectively – so find yourself a parking spot and prepare to stay a while. All this nostalgia and food choice with competitive ping pong and tunes from the 80’s and 90’s pumped through the speakers. Check it out and you can’t go wrong with any of the restaurants.
