Sprawling Duplex Homes Now Available Beach houses foster a sense of well-being which is why so many people choose to build their homes near the water. The benefits of living by the sea are what inspired New Jersey developers Mimi and Edwin Feliciano to create South Beach at Long Branch. The award-winning oceanfront complex combines stunning modern design with maintenance-free living. “We’re finding that buyers are especially intrigued by the three sprawling duplexes in the North Tower which are really special,” noted James. “The duplexes can be amazing beach retreats because of the large amount of interior and exterior space as well as their unique, two-story layouts.” The four-bedroom, five-bath duplexes feature exceptional details and luxurious appointments, ranging in price from $2.9 to $3.1 million. With unobstructed northern coastal views, the duplexes are bright and airy with two separate floors, ranging from 3,027 to 3,309 square feet of interior space and another 1,000 square feet of exterior space. The open concept layouts on the upper floors focus on a large master bedroom suite with walk-in closet and adjacent lounge area with a great room and designer kitchen leading to an outdoor terrace. The lower floors consist of three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a lounge area and an outdoor courtyard and patio designed with a plunge pool or hot tub. “In addition to the three sprawling, one-ofa-kind penthouses,” said James, “two duplex penthouses occupy the 7th and 8th floors of the South Tower and the third and largest penthouse sits atop the North Tower.” Call to schedule a private tour 732.222.0710 sales center or 732.842.1130 brokerage office SouthBeachatLongBranch.com Sotheby’s International Realty and the Sotheby’s International Realty logo are registered (or unregistered) service marks used with permission. Colts Neck Honors Veterans

The Colts Neck community came together on Veteran’s Day to honor our nation’s Veterans. The annual celebration was held at Cedar Drive Middle School and included a take home lunch for Veterans and their families that was provided by The Woman’s Club of Colts Neck. Normally the celebration includes an elaborate luncheon, but pandemic restrictions were honored with everyone looking forward to the traditional day’s events next year. The community’s next generation of leaders were on hand to add to the day. The Flag Raising Ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance were led by Cedar Drive Middle School students with eighthgrader Daniel Harvey giving the welcome. The event included the National Anthem followed by remarks delivered by Colin Rigby,

Principal of the Cedar Drive Middle School. Col. James Sfayer addressed the guests next, acknowledging all the Veterans present and asking them to stand. Sfayer spoke about the Semper Fi Santa Program, that provides holiday gifting for local military families. The Laying of Wreath ceremony was led by Deputy Mayor Michael Viola and Cedar Drive Middle School Students. Following the ceremony, The Woman’s Club of Colts Neck welcomed all the Veterans and their families to come up and choose from a delicious variety of sandwiches made with love. The students helped organize the items and pass out the patriotic decorated bags complete with personal notes of thanks and appreciation. Meet Your Neighbor: Helene Palatianos Quinn BY LILIANN PARAS Jewelry is always a wonderful gift, and all the more appreciated when the pieces are unique and striking. Helene Palatianos Quinn, worldtraveler, is the woman behind Byzanthea, offering unique Byzantine-style pendants in gold and silver. With the holidays and special events on the horizon, CM met with Helene to find out more about her and how she started Byzanthea. CM: How long have you lived in Monmouth County? Helene Palatianos Quinn (HPQ): I’ve lived in Monmouth County for approximately 33 years. I live in Holmdel with my husband Brian, my son Brian Emanuel, our dog Harley, and cat Shubha. My son attends Village Elementary School. I’m a member of the Holmdel Chamber of Commerce. I am also a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Holmdel and am involved in the Greek School PTO. CM: What types of jewelry are included in the Byzanthea line? HPQ: Byzanthea features luxury genuine gold crosses. Many are traditional Byzantine-style crosses that remarkably translate into current, timeless, and fashionable statement pieces. Most are handmade, artistic pieces. I added designs after receiving requests for simpler crosses for confirmations and communions. I also offer a handmade sterling silver line by a Greek designer (not shown on my website.) CM: What is your background, and how did you get started in jewelry design? HPQ: I began my journey with a background in Fashion Design and Production Management. I worked in the interior design luxury market, manufacturing handmade carpets, textiles and furniture for some of the most renowned companies in the design industry. I traveled throughout Europe and Asia, and especially enjoyed shopping for jewelry in Greece. Byzantine crosses have always been special to me, perhaps it is because of my Greek heritage. I work with the designers and craftsmen on some of the designs, particularly those referencing older Byzantine jewelry. Others, I source directly from well-known designers and suppliers. I feel that these crosses are meaningful, treasured, timeless- spiritual talismans of sorts, to be handed down or given to someone special.

18

“Better to have one special item that will always be cherished, rather than many insignificant items.” CM: What are your favorite parts about what you do? HPQ: Byzanthea satisfies my creative side. I appreciate other cultures, their traditions and crafts. And I love when people appreciate the quality of the design and the workmanship. My clients are generally people with an artistic eye and an appreciation of fine detail. Stephanie Odegard (philanthropist and leader in contemporary design) purchased a cross and sent me a thank you note that I cherish, saying that she wears it always, prays and holds it before any meaningful event, and that it gives her peace. It is very rewarding to know who is wearing our pendants and how they bring peace and feelings of well-being. CM: Do you have a favorite philosophy? HPQ: My philosophy is to remember what I’ve seen in my travels to third world countries - to never forget, to help when possible, and to never take for granted the gifts we have been given. This goes back to my work with Stephanie

Odegard. We had a commitment to try to help those underprivileged. We ensured our looms and factories were free of child labor, that our workers were paid fair wages, had access to medical care, drank clean water, and that all children were educated. We all became part of something much greater than ourselves. This is something I also try to instill in my son. Children have so much these days. I want him to be aware of the situations of others and to appreciate what he has. CM: What do you enjoy doing in your “spare time”? HPQ: I have an eight- year- old son and find that there is not very much “spare time” - a lot seems to revolve around him and even the choice of Byzanthea was made so that I could run my business mainly from home. It took nine years to have Brian, my miracle child, and I value my time with him. When there is spare time - I generally spend it with my family. My cousins and I are very close and are my best friends. CM: Favorite Quote? HPQ: “Better to have one special item that will always be cherished, rather than many insignificant items.”

Duncan Smith Theatre Hosts Broadway Fame & Local Talent George Lazarou singing Thunder Road Photo Credit Michael Kushner

The entertainment industry everywhere was turned upside down with the 2020 pandemic. Broadway went dark months ago, with the lights slated to remain off until at least June 2021. Locally, dining and entertainment venues came to an abrupt halt, only to have outside and then hybrid reopenings. Just thinking about it can make anyone pause, as many have, and just wait until it’s all over. However, The Executive Director of The Holmdel Theatre Company (HTC), Colleen Cook, adapted and adjusted, pivoting the HTC’s Broadway at the Barn Series, into Outside the Barn. According to Cook, it was Broadway star Alice Ripley who recommended the concept of performances Outside the Barn, with the intent of raising money for the Theatre. The Barn is The Duncan Smith Theatre, a historic landmark in Holmdel, named after Holmdel High School graduate, the beloved Duncan Smith. Cook organized an outside community event, featuring Broadway star Alice Ripley and local talent; Holmdel’s very own George Lazarou. The talented Lazarou opened up for Ripley, performing a medley of songs that included Empty by Ray Lamontagne, If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell, and a Jersey favorite, Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. The October performance marked Alice Ripley’s third time appearing at the theater in Holmdel. In this recent performance, Ripley sang a variety of soaring melodies and smooth, powerful lyrics featuring songs by Judy Garland, Tom Kitt/Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, and more. “It was a great night for the Holmdel Theatre community and a reminder that nothing can ever replace the interaction of live performances,” said Colleen Cook. “It was good for the soul. We consider Alice Ripley a part of our HTC family and George Lazarou provided local talent at its best!”

The Gift of Sweet Dreams Conquering Sleep Fears, One Story at a Time By LiliAnn Paras | Photo: Jaime Bonura

John R. Green lives in Holmdel with husband Anthony LaBate, and their eight-year-old twins, A.J. and Francesca. Exactly four years ago, CM highlighted this modern family-- John, a multiple Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television news and documentary writer and producer, and Anthony, designer of couture clothing and hand-crafted jewelry. Then, as now, A.J. and Francesca “bring joy and make them laugh every day” and it is immediately apparent that the well-being of their twins is their top priority. In the 2016 interview, the conversation often focused on the twins, all while John and Anthony took turns dressing the children, gathering snacks, and generally attending to their needs. Each expressed hope that Francesca and AJ “will be kind, and will know kindness… in a safe future, free of fear and with no limits on their aspirations or self -worth.” They soon learned that one of the joys of parenting is the bedtime ritual--except when the ritual devolves into exhausting, recurring, nightly trials and tribulations. And then multiply that by two for twins, with A.J. fearing nightmares and Francesca dreading being alone in her dreams. It was John’s joy in discovering winning solutions to comfort both children that inspired him to dive into a vastly different media arena: author of children’s books. He recently released two stories, sharing his whimsical, comforting tales for parents and children to enjoy together. In Dream Grabber, John writes of a safe world in which a father defeats nightmares for his son. In Dream Jumper, a father accompanies his daughter on fantastic dream adventures. Each book has a catchy rhyme scheme and even includes extra pages for the children to illustrate their own dreams and wishes. Psychologist Kim Bergman, PhD, notes that Dream Grabber “is a charming and delightful bedtime story, beautifully validating a universal childhood fear rather than dismissing it…and provides a lovely and supportive path to move through those fears.” The stories have been described by Juju Chang, Co-Anchor of ABC News Nightline, as “a lesson in mindfulness, positivity, and the power of love.” Robin Roberts, Co-Anchor of Good Morning America, comments that Dream Jumper is “a heartwarming read with beautiful illustrations” and adds it will have readers “jumping for joy!” Lori Greiner of ABC-TV’s Shark Tank is also an enthusiastic fan of the books. “John R. Green has brilliantly created two wonderful books that turn bedtime and dreaming into a magical worry-free time for kids. So clever, so smart, simply magical.” Books make terrific holiday gifts. And if bedtimes are made easier and sweet dreams are restored, those are gifts that cannot easily be measured. Both books are now available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, visit timetodreambooks.com and follow @timetodreambooks on Facebook and Instagram.

An Interactive Mural in Downtown Rumson By LiliAnn Paras Art heals and serves as a refreshing distraction for both the artist and the viewers. One such pleasant distraction awaits viewers in downtown Rumson. Local renowned portrait artist, Mary Connell Gaynor, has enlivened the local scene with her remarkable animal murals, meticulously created on the walls of Rumson Wine & Spirits. This contribution to Rumson is particularly fitting, given Mary’s connection to the town and Monmouth County. She spent much of her childhood in Rumson, raised her own family there, and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Monmouth University. Although Mary is mostly known for her pastel portraits of children for the last thirty years, animal portraits are not new to her. “I approach my studies of animals with that same gentle passion.” Truly there is an intangible compelling quality present in her work. Maybe this is explained by Mary’s view that she sees “something behind the eyes of every living thing” and seeks to express it through her paintings. The painted animals are so life-like, one almost expects them to emerge from the wall. The dogs, cats, and a bird are all pets of the Mulheren family, owners of the store. The project started simply enough with the goal of painting one or two animals. Mary began creating in spring and finished two walls by October, investing nearly 150 hours to ultimately paint thirteen animals and a bicycle. Much of it was physically grueling, even prompting a friend to construct a homemade kneeling pad for her. A third wall is planned to begin when the warm weather returns. Mary has been connecting one-on-one with many area families through years of her portrait work; now, she is connect-

ing, all at once, with a new group of admirers. The murals have become interactive and people are finding new ways to appreciate them. All are invited and encouraged to visit the wall with their own pets and to marvel at how the “new pets” become part of the mural in their photographs. This endeavor renewed a sense of purpose in Mary. “I feel strongly that growing as an artist is a lifelong process,” and Mary is living up to that philosophy. Inspired by the many positive reactions and expressions of gratitude from the public, Mary seeks new ways to give back. She is currently exploring ways to collaborate with those who may want to transform a wall of their own, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to charity. To reach Mary Connell Gaynor, call 732.546.7417, visit maryconnellgaynor.com, or email mcg815@aol.com.

When I was growing up Friday night was pizza night, Saturday night was meat, and Sunday was pasta. Food, like life, was simpler. In those days, we didn’t go out much. Much of this was cooked at home in the linoleum clad kitchen; this, before the days of apps, iPhones, and online menus. Takeout was duopolized by pizza and Chinese food, which was a special treat unlike todays COVID ravaged get-anything, curbside-pickup economy. We shopped, we were loyal to the supermarket “in the neighborhood”, and we were overwhelmed when the mall opened, giving us a plethora of choices to bounce from shop to shop. I was never quite sure if we were rich or poor, which is to say I suppose my parents did a good job. Perhaps because our generations were raised in a post-depression house where they saved used aluminum foil in a kitchen drawer somehow defending against the return of “tough times” with a “waste-nothing” mindset. As time went on, and I started to work and put a couple of sheckles in my pocket, I realized that there were options and choices that I didn’t seem to have before. This newfound “wealth” somehow translated to liberty and freedom. As we (and I suppose most of America) climbed the socio-economic ladder, we moved out of “the neighborhood”, and into the suburbs, eventually ending up in the ShangriLa of Monmouth County. We raised our kids with traditions based on books. Most organized religion is centered around “a book”- the bible, the torah etc. – which served as our set of ethical and ethnic guidelines. It also gave us structure and rules to follow, the strive to theoretically make us better, and provide us with a “moral north”, a proverbial compass to navigate our lives. This rambling is of course a parallel for our American lifestyle and democracy. In today’s technological age, LIFE by the above thesis is more complex. America has become the land of not only opportunity, but options. I remember growing up in NYC and thinking almost anything I desired was at arm’s reach, unlike people from rural America, or many other places around the world. And if I worked hard enough, I could get it. I felt lucky. Today, thanks to the “democratization” of technology and information, many

Americans have access and options to things they NEVER have in previous generations. There are, however, many disenfranchised people that continue to be distanced from this “mall” of options and opportunity and are being left behind. So, the question becomes, are all these choices and options a good thing for us… or America (or the world for that matter)? We have just lived through what was arguably a strange and most contentious election cycle ever (at least in my lifetime). We started eight years ago with many choices for presidential candidates, and issues on both sides of the aisle – how did that work out? Our society has created an environment of have anything, do anything that makes you feel good. The aforementioned “books” seem to have been spurned by a society that champions inclusion, while we seem to be excluding many in the process. Has democracy grown to a point where we have too much freedom, or too many choices? The 2020 general election saw over 150 million people practice this democracy and vote (the largest amount ever in history). Is it not amazing that in the end it was almost a split 50/50? It was not a smooth divide by any means, but more polarized than ever. Maybe this is how democracy is supposed to work, maybe not. Every choice we make is from a list options. The more we grow, the more options we have. Are our options limited by our looks, our wealth, our intelligence, our location? Today, with our freedom of choices, be it personal or political, we are sold the value of increasing the number of options – but are we better for it? What or whose “book” do we follow? As we enter this holiday (holy-day) season, my wish for all of us is to return to a simpler place with the people we love, even for just a little while to escape the craziness that will tattoo 2020 as one of the most challenging years ever. Perhaps this is God’s way of saying, slow it down America, reel it in. As we turn the page to 2021, let us hope for better choices, better options, and return to a simpler place - in our hearts, our families, and our country. QUOTE OF THE MONTH “You are free to make whatever choice you want, but you are not free from the consequences of the choice.”

Let us all be grateful for the many blessings in our lives!

I’ll Be Home for Christmas, written in 1943, has new meaning this year as the world has faced challenges and hardships. Written to honor soldiers overseas during World War II, the lyrics are that of someone longing to be home with loved ones. We find ourselves also longing to gather, perhaps outside our homes, and unable to spend time with extended family and friends in person. But as Hallmark star Jen Lilley has aptly named her holiday charity drive, Christmas is NOT Cancelled, despite challenges there is much to celebrate and enjoy this season of our lives. Every year for our December cover story we bring you a fun dose of holiday cheer by going behind the scenes of Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas. The every-weekend holiday movies have become a much-loved fan favorite celebration of the season, so much so that Lifetime, Netflix, and other networks have taken to airing a full slate of their own rom-com style holiday offerings in hopes of capturing some of the same loyal fans. This year, perhaps even more than other years, viewers are looking for light-hearted, soul-warming, happy endings that remind us that being home for the holidays is really what we’ve been craving all along. So heat up a mug of hot chocolate, don’t skimp on the marshmallows, and grab your favorite Hallmark blanket as we share with you about Gwen Stefani’s new single, Actor Antonio Cupo’s upcoming movie, holiday traditions to consider adding to your list, and how you can help Jen Lilley save Christmas.

Gwen Stefani’s Here This Christmas While watching your favorite Hallmark holiday movie, don’t be surprised if, during a commercial break run for more cocoa, you hear global icon Gwen Stefani singing. The singer, songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer, has partnered with Hallmark Channel on an all-new original song, Here This Christmas, as the exclusive Hallmark Channel Countdown to Christmas Theme Song. The single was written and produced by Ryan Tedder and songwriter, producer, and musician, Brent Kutzle. Stefani also recorded covers of holiday classics like Sleigh Ride to be featured throughout the network’s programming promos. Both songs are part of Stefani’s reissue of her deluxe edition album, You Make it Feel Like Christmas. An upbeat tune with a toe-tapping beat of sleigh bells, the single has an impressive creative team. Stefani, a threetime Grammy Award winner, has achieved global success as a performer, songwriter, frontwoman for iconic band No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. To date, she

has sold more than 50 million units worldwide. Stefani currently serves as a coach on the 19th season of the four-time Emmy Award-winning competition series The Voice. Three-time Grammy Award winning songwriter and producer, Ryan Tedder, has worked with everyone from Adele to Paul McCartney, Beyonce to Taylor Swift, to name just a few, in addition to being the founding member, lead singer, writer, and producer of the multi-platinum selling band OneRepublic. Tedder is also a producer and mentor on the NBC show, Songland, which just wrapped its second season. Stefani’s fiancé and fellow The Voice coach, multiple-award-winning country singer Blake Shelton, also works with Hallmark during the holidays. Shelton has produced two movies for the network with the third in the series premiering on December 5 on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel. Starring perennial favorite Lacey Chabert and Stephen Huszar and directed by David Winning, Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas is based on Shelton’s song Time

Best known for his movies with actress Autumn Reeser, this holiday season offers their third movie together for Hallmark and their fourth film together overall. We caught up with Antonio just after he finished filming A Glenbrooke Christmas, premiering December 12 on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel, to learn more about the man behind the smile. Born in Canada to Italian and Spanish parents, Antonio has lived extensively in Rome and works both in Italy and North America. Fluent in his father’s native tongue, during our phone interview he spoke seamlessly in both Italian and English to his two children, Brando, 4, and Chiara, 2. Much of our conversation centered around food, and we both found comfort in chatting about our shared experiences with bacalao, Portuguese dried, salted cod fish. My mother’s family is from Portugal, and Antonio spent some time in the region in and around Porto. Which reminds me, I owe him a few recipes. Having filmed several movies and series in both Italy and surrounding countries, Antonio views his industry as similar on both continents with food availability being the biggest difference. “Shooting in Italy or Canada, the basic elements of a film set are pretty much the same,” explained Antonio. “If you’re living in Italy, however, you don’t get the first class treatment an American crew and cast enjoys. You get your food in a box, a little tin of pasta, and a paper carton of wine. Now if you’re a North American production filming in Rome, then you get the good stuff. You still get your little quart of wine, but now it’s in a glass bottle and the food is delicious.” For more of CM’s exclusive interview with Antonio Cupo and his upcoming Hallmark movie, visit communitymagazinenj.com

HOLI DAY T R A DIT IONS Without the usual overflowing slate of fun events and seasonal activities, many are scrambling to think of ways to incorporate cheer while social distancing and visiting virtually. Similar to the Holiday Check Lists in our favorite seasonal movies, we’ve put together some ideas for you to consider and incorporate. PNC Arts Center Magic of Lights Available the entire month of December through January 2, gather your family in the car and drive to Holmdel for a light display like none other. The cost is $25 per car when you reserve ahead, $30 at the gate and available seven days per week from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Visit: magicoflights.com/events/NewJersey.

a decoration by having him or her write it on a paper Christmas tree or snowflake that you then hang across the fireplace or some other area. Making cards for soldiers, those in nursing homes, and friends or family who find themselves alone this holiday is also a great craft weekend and a way to spread love and cheer.

Lights, Camera, Cocoa Fill up a thermos or two with your favorite hot chocolate, put on your favorite holiday playlist, and head across the bridge to Brooklyn to the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights where this festive NYC neighborhood presents tens of thousands of lights and is visited by more than 100,000 people each year. A pizza to go from, well just about anywhere in Brooklyn, is just as delicious in the car. Bring your camera and lots of napkins, and don’t forget to order some Italian pastry for dessert from one of the many bakeries. 11th to 13th Avenues from 83rd to 86th St in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn

Try Something New with Cookies! Deliver cookies and treats to your local fire station, police department, or the staff at your local hospital. You can also choose a never-before-attempted cookie to become your new family traditional treat. Anna-Maria Pittella of Middletown shared her favorite: “Struffoli!!! Italian honey balls with sprinkles. I make them every year. This year I will be shipping them!”

Three Gift Christmas for Kids Something they want, something they need, and something to read or make them better people. Symbolic of the Three Wise Men, this is a great tradition to start to keep materialistic habits in check and potentially gift to others more in need.

Gingerbread Virtual Village “A couple years back during a challenging holiday for our family, several of our cousins decided to have an afternoon of gingerbread building. Several of us gathered to bake, and the next day more joined in to build and decorate,” explained Susan Festa of Freehold and Anita Nicosia of Belford. “It was challenging, but healing and enjoyable. This year, we’re doing it virtually. Each home ‘team’ is building and decorating and we’re having an online party to view, vote, and celebrate together. The winning team gets bragging rights until next year.” Best part, friends and family from around the country can join in and it works no matter which holiday you celebrate!

Gratitude and Giving Have your child start an ‘I Am Thankful’ list. Have him or her add one thing he or she is thankful for each day. You can turn this into

Actress, singer, and foster care advocate Jen Lilley has partnered with the USO and Toys for Tots in Operation Christmas is Not Cancelled. By donating through the purchase of online raffle tickets, participants have the chance to win weekly prizes as well as a grand prize Ultimate Christmas that includes a tree, decorations, dinner, prizes, cash, and more. Each donation grants a toy for a child as well as a donation to the USO and a free download of Lilley’s album, Hindsight, as well as her Christmas music. Conceived by Lilley with her at the helm of the operation, she has enlisted her fellow Hallmark stars to promote the worthwhile cause. Having starred with Trevor Donovan and Barbara Niven in Hallmark’s USS Christmas, which premiered in November, Lilley found herself wanting to give back to those who serve. “I have always been in awe of our military, those enlisted, those who have served, and their families,” shared Lilley. “When I got the script for my Christmas movie this year, I cried tears of gratitude and tears of responsibility. While I have military in my family, my great uncle John Tierney served as a rear Admiral in the Navy and was an exceptional fighter pilot, my brother- in-law Josh is a marine, my grandmother was a Naval accounting technician, plus sev-

choice of the night a surprise by drawing one out just before showtime. Make sure to include Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas, premiering on December 5, and A Glenbrooke Christmas, premiering December 12, both on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel.

Decorations Hold Memories Many families have the tradition of selecting a new ornament for the tree each year, but this Christmas is a great time to have each family member select or create an ornament that represents what they are most grateful for in 2020. As time passes, those special ornaments will hold many memories as you bring them out again each year.

eral other uncles and cousins serve in different branches, the point is, I will never know firsthand what it’s like to be in the core family unit of an enlisted servant. This movie allowed me to step into that role and touch the surface of what it must be like and gave me more depths of empathy. It’s so special. To all of you who have military in your family, who have served, or who are in active service, thank you for protecting my freedoms, thank you for your selfless sacrifices physically, mentally, and emotionally.” To support the cause, visit ChristmasIsNotCancelled.com.

DI VORCE TA LK

BY PET ER C . PA R A S , ESQ.

Holiday Spirit Remember how excited you got as a child as the holidays approached? The anticipation built up and the sheer joy increased soon after Halloween. Thanksgiving was in sight and that was just the warm up for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and Festivus (for you Seinfeld fans out there). Friends, parties, presents, and family were all part of the excitement. Remember the feelings you had as a kid? That’s how your children feel. That’s how they are entitled to feel. Your divorce (although it certainly affects them) is not their divorce. They still have two parents whose job it is, is to insulate them from the strife divorce brings to the adults. No matter the level of animosity, whether palpable or subtle, between divorcing spouses, the children didn’t

cause it and the children shouldn’t suffer from it. Children of divorce are no less entitled to holiday happiness than children in intact families. So put aside your anger at your spouse, if even temporarily, and let your children enjoy the holiday season as stress-free as possible. Now is the time to make plans, to adjust your plans, and to be flexible so that the children can spend time with both parents and their extended families during the holidays. What’s in it for you? If you’re flexible now, the chances may increase that your spouse (or ex-spouse) will be flexible in the future when you make a request. You will also get the satisfaction only a parent can know by doing what’s right for your child. And, oh yes, you’re likely to have a happier child.

Children naturally love their parents. When they don’t, it is usually because they have been taught not to. Sometimes a parent’s own actions are the cause. Just as often it is the other parent’s actions that create or exacerbate a rift. The holiday season is a special time for most children, whether celebrated religiously or secularly. Give your children the best gift of all – a time to enjoy both parents and their families without the stress and guilt divorcing parents all too often instill in them. If parents, together, prioritize their children’s needs above their own, they can ensure that the holiday season is, indeed, the most wonderful time of the year.

By Susan Murphy The 16th annual Frances Foundation Gala took place in October and was different this year – it was virtual. Creativity, determination, and the amazing support of many made this gala just as fun and exciting as last year. President and Executive Director Robert “Bob” Heugle shared hosting duties with Warrior Grace “Cookie” West and Jr. Trustee Sydney Rubman from the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch.

At the beginning, Heugle gratefully acknowledged all the sponsors, giving special recognition to the following for their generorsity: The Vonage Foundation; Amwins Brokerage of New Jersey, Chuck and Barbara Ciccarelly and Family; and Jeff and Sharon Brosemer and Merck, who were the top sponsors, for their generosity. He also thanked all Warriors’ Sponsors; Family Assistance Sponsors; Angels’ Sponsors; Finding a Cure Sponsors; Ambassador Sponsors; and the 24 donors who contributed to the silent auction. Fast-moving yet inspiring, the virtual program included an inspirational video from Villanova Basketball Coach Jay Wright; a presentation from Dr. Jessica Scerbo, Chief of Pediatric Oncology at Hackensack-Meridian Jersey Shore Hospital; messages from Frances Foundation (FF) warriors; a comedy and magic show; the song Memories sung by FF warrior McKenzy Hupke; beautiful words from Angel Will’s mom Kara Shields; a Truly Brave music video featuring FF angels Antonio Santos and Stephanie Bader; and a FF year in review music video. Near the end of the gala, Co-hosts Cookie and Sydney were joined by McKenzy to draw the three winning raffle tickets. “Please join me in thanking all who made our virtual gala an extraordinary event; especially trustee Keia Rubman and her family. Most importantly, although remotely, we were still together connected as a family, and honoring our pediatric cancer warriors and angels. The videos shown during the gala highlight the smiles, happiness, and comfort you helped us bring to our pediatric cancer families throughout the year. God Bless you for being wonderful members of our Frances Family,” said Heugle. A few days later, Heugle shared that the virtual gala was a smashing success because of the generosity of so many. The event raised an incredible total of $207,300.00. For more information on the Frances Foundation, visit francesfoundation.net.

The group provided hats, blankets, and headbands in bags and boxes donated by local businesses. Earlier in the year, the group knitted and crocheted shawls and lap afghans for those at Bayshore Health Center. They also made mask mates for the staff there as well as for members of Union Beach First Responders and the staff at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. Contributing members include: Maddy Kalb, Middletown; Patti Roberts, Hazlet; Roberta Sheridan, Middletown; Jeanne Dischler, Hazlet; Harriet Freid, Marlboro; and Sophia Moglino, a junior at Holmdel High School who assisted the group by writing ‘Thank You For Your Service’ notes to accompany shawls and lap afghans that were donated to the Veterans at Lyons VA Medical Center in Lyons, NJ. Big Brother Program Eases Freshman Transition at CBA As freshmen at a college preparatory school like Christian Brothers Academy, there is understandable nervousness as these young men arrive on campus for their first fall as CBA students. From academic responsibilities to getting involved in extracurriculars, the newest Colts could always use a little guidance as they immerse themselves in Academy life. Enter one of CBA’s most recent initiatives: the Big Brother Program. Each of the 225 freshmen have been paired with a junior or senior to help with this transition. The upperclassmen reached out initially in September to introduce themselves, making sure their freshmen brothers knew that they were always available to chat. For freshman Michael Child, the initial message from his big brother, junior Casey Hoffman, could not have come at a better time. “In September, he concluded his email by asking if I had any questions for him. I am taking AP Biology this year, and at the time, I was very nervous about it,” said Child. “Casey had taken the course as a freshman, so I am extremely grateful that he took the time to provide me with so much useful information about the course.” Hoffman knew that Child would need a little more guidance when it came to his schedule, as Child was challenging himself with an impressive slate of classes. “The last thing I wanted was for this [relationship] to turn into a source of stress or as just another task he had to complete,” said Hoffman. “We’ve talked back and forth over email about workload, managing time, and some experiences and tips I had for the biology class.” A constant line of communication and friendly advice is the main goal of the Big Brother Program. While this school year has been altered by ongoing COVID-19 precautions, the upperclassmen were able to start the year with Zoom sessions that focused on important parts of freshman year. Hoffman and senior Chris Konefal were both able to contribute to these valuable Zoom sessions, which covered topics such as academic challenges, sport tryouts, or some great clubs to join. “I can remember going to lunch as a freshman and sitting at the big tables in the cafeteria, creating friendships that have last-

ed me through the years,” said Konefal. “Now with COVID-19, the freshmen have an understandably harder time getting to know their own classmates.” Konefal was paired with freshman Evan Sorensen and the two quickly struck up a great rapport. “Evan and I talk almost every day, whether we are just catching up what we did over the weekend or helping answer some of Evan’s questions regarding clubs or sports,” said Konefal. “We have also discussed the best ways to gain service hours and worthwhile opportunities, such as helping out with the Thanksgiving Food Drive.” And as a freshman, Sorensen is grateful for the chance to bond with an upperclassmen who once walked in his shoes. “Chris has made my transition into CBA much smoother than what I imagined,” said Sorensen. “I was stressed about writing papers, but Chris recommended never writing a paper in one night and do little by little each day. He also offered to read over my papers, which has been super helpful.” As the school year progresses, it is the hope that the freshmen progressively gain more confidence and independence, while always having their big brother to reach back out to.

Adopt a Child with Cancer for the Holidays

The Ashley Lauren Foundation (ALF), a Monmouth County-based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hope and help to children throughout New Jersey who suffer from cancer through financial, material and emotional support, is seeking individuals, families, businesses or corporations who are interested in “Adopting an ALF Child” by contributing one or more $25 Visa Gift Cards for their holiday gifts. “The Holiday Season is very meaningful to The Ashley Lauren Foundation,” said ALF Founder/CEO Monica Vermeulen. “Due to COVID-19, we will sadly not be able to have our traditional Christmas Party for the children and their families. This amazing party has always been a wonderful day for the children and their families to enjoy a “day away” from the daily burdens of childhood cancer and to delight in the joys of the season! We will still show our love to the children by providing gifts that we will deliver to them. Help us bring much needed smiles to the children.” You can mail the gift card(s) by December 15th to: The Ashley Lauren Foundation, 617 Union Avenue, Bldg. 3 Suite 27, Brielle, NJ 08730 or drop them off to The Ashley Lauren Foundation office by calling 732.414.1625 to arrange a drop off time. 4th Annual PSA Contest Accepting Entries through December 18th!

The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, in partnership with 2nd Floor Youth Helpline, Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care and the New Jersey TLC, invites high school students across New Jersey to submit a public service announcement (PSA) focused on messages of hope, recovery, and highlighting the 2nd Floor Youth Helpline resource. Each school or youth group is permitted to have a student or team of students submit entries in each of the two categories. Schools and youth groups are encouraged to form teams of students to produce and enter a PSA. Suicide is preventable. It is important for students to be aware of the warning signs and to be familiar with local resources so that they can help themselves or a friend in need. This campaign is designed to help increase awareness across New Jersey, reaching the tens of thousands of students making attempts each year, by letting students know that there is help available, to keep hope and that “You Are Not Alone” and “Friends Help Friends”. Submissions are due by December 18, 2020. Download the official rules and a flier at psa.sptsusa.org,

Internationally Acclaimed Artist Honors a Woman’s Right to Vote By Susan Murphy

Artist Brian Hanlon holds the plaque that will be placed by the sculpture in the picture once the installation and wall are completed. The sculpture was donated by Brian Hanlon and his wife, Michele.

Last month, Brian Hanlon, an Internationally acclaimed Artist and distinguished 2017 Brookdale Community College (BCC) alumnus, presented the college with his bronze sculpture honoring the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote. The ceremony took place in the main lobby of BCC where the statue will be housed. “We are so excited to have the statue here,” said Dr. David Stout, President of BCC who gratefully accepted the sculpture on behalf of the College. “So many of our students will walk through those doors, and when they enter this building it’s the first thing they are going to see. Thank you very much Brian for your dedication and your generosity.” Although Freeholder Lillian G. Burry could not attend, she sent a statement which Dr. Stout read. An excerpt from her statement noted, “Here on the eve of election day with millions of votes that have already been cast, it’s hard to imagine a time when women had no vote, I cannot imagine what my life would have been like if I could not have fully participated in civic life. I think of Susan B. Anthony standing outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1876, reading the declaration of the rights of women of the US and the sculpture of her in that moment by Brian Hanlon.” The sculpture is a representation of the triumphant moment during which women in Washington, D.C. walked to enact the 19th Amendment. “This important milestone deserves a historical and spiritual permanent marker,” said Hanlon. “I hope the women who walk in and out of the building feel the impact of the statue and have the courageous spirit, like the women before them to succeed.” Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon shared,

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

“This beautiful sculpture will remind us all and countless future generations of the fight for women’s suffrage and more importantly inspire them to cherish and preserve the rights established by the 19th amendment that we are here to celebrate today. I would not be serving in this elected position that I am today were it not for the brave suffragists who ensured this precious right for women.” Roseanne Alvarez, professor of English and Women in Learning Coordinator explained that graduates and current students through the WILL, Women in Learning and Leadership program, at BCC, talked with Brian to get his vision of his work. He said it is not a named figure but a multi-representative statue. “The students will bring it to life in an installation that features more marginalized voices and underrepresented figures from the movement and beyond. The students are doing all of the research and will be collaborating with student artists to develop this installation that will go on the wall behind the statue.” This installation will be presented in April at the end of the semester and will be a celebratory event. “The Women’s Suffrage Movement is an extremely important study and it’s an extremely important part of empowerment to women in education,” said Hanlon. “In 1979, I graduated Holmdel High School and came over to Brookdale where I met a man named Tony Blazer who completely transformed my life. He helped me develop a language through the art of molding clay, and I will be forever grateful,” said Hanlon. With his sculptures, Hanlon honors icons, legends, and moments of significance. He has received national and local awards and commendations for his commissions, which primarily encompass the civic, historic, and athletic sectors. For more information about Brookdale Community College, visit BrookdaleCC.edu.

Monmouth County Native Pursues Navy Aviator Career By Susan Murphy

Wearing a flight suit, Matthew Langdon stands in front of a helicopter just before preparing to take a tour in Norfolk, Virginia.

Matthew Langdon, 21, first learned about Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) his junior year while captaining the track and field team at Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel. Becoming a part of the NROTC became his goal and his passion, and soon after, the lifelong Lincroft resident was honored with the West Point Dwight D. Eisenhower leadership award. “I was chosen for my ability to show strong leadership in many facets from sports, community service, involvement at school, and many other everyday things,” shared Langdon. “The West Point Dwight D. Eisenhower award was a true honor to have received.” After a long application process, Langdon was chosen in the first round of acceptances for Navy ROTC. “My paternal grandfather served in the Navy and my maternal grandfather served in the Army,” said Langdon. “Stemming from them, I have many family members that have selflessly given back to the community and the nation in many different areas of service. I felt it was only

60

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

right to follow in their footsteps and continue to give back.” Langdon started at Penn State in 2017 majoring in cyber security. “Someday I will be out of the Navy and will need to go get a job outside of the military,” explained Langdon. “In our modern-day world, we see cyber security as a major concern for big business, governments, and even everyday people. The major drew my interest because of the interesting nature of it and the fact that it is ever lasting and ever-changing.” Despite his busy schedule, Langdon has been able to maintain his grades, keep up with his NROTC duties, and he is a member of Sig EP fraternity. He explained what a typical day of school and NROTC duties entails. “As a member of the NROTC unit here at Penn State, my day starts with a five a.m. wake up to exercise with the rest of the unit,” said Langdon. “After this, we are expected to go through our lives as regular students, attending class and doing homework like everyone else. We will have some extra classes to take with the NROTC unit here relating to many different Navy and military related things. Overall, we are just like any other student here with just more responsibilities and a higher standard to be held to.” In addition, Langdon explained, “Every summer, we get sent somewhere to do basically hands-on training for what our jobs could be.” Upon graduation from Penn State in May of 2021, Langdon will be commissioned as an officer and then attend flight school in Pensacola, Florida to become a Naval Aviator. He noted that on average, the training pipeline for a Naval Aviator takes around two years to complete. Once completed, the student will officially graduate by receiving his “wings,” a pin to show completion and then be attached to a flight squadron based on what plane they are flying. Langdon has an 18-year-old sister, Grace, and a dog named Harley. His parents moved from Lincroft to Shrewsbury a year ago. His parents have been a constant in his life. “My parents could not have been more supportive of my decision to go through the path that I am on. They have always been there for me every step of the way and are my number one support system in life, wanting nothing more than to see me happy.” There is an ultimate goal which Langdon has for his future. “Upon graduating flight school, I hope to fly fighter jets until retirement in the Navy, with a minimum eightyear commitment. After that, even though it is a long way away, I would certainly love to use my military experience and Penn State cyber security degree to work in cyber security in the private sector.” Langdon gratefully acknowledged being able to share his accomplishments and goals with our readers. “Thank you so much for this opportunity. I am truly proud to be a part of this amazing community for so many years. It holds a place dear to my heart.”
