More Than 300 Gather to Celebrate a Community of Giving at Lunch Break’s Fall Gala
Gala host, Jon Stewart Lunch Break supporters were reunited for a magical evening of entertainment under the stars to honor the selfless work of philanthropic community leaders on behalf of financially and food insecure community members during the 2021 Fall Gala: We Rise Together, Restoring and Rebuilding Lives at the Basie Center for the Arts and Education recently. The event was hosted by Jon Stewart of the Apple TV+ series, The Problem With Jon Stewart. The gala committee, co-chaired by Mimi Keenan and Tina Pflaster, coordinated the fundraiser’s fall harvest theme -- an iconic nod to Lunch Break’s nutritious food service programs. “Lunch Break provides an invaluable service to our community. It’s essential in normal times and its value has only grown in these difficult times,” said Jon Stewart of the organization’s efforts to feed community members struggling financially during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m always impressed by their compassion and thorough execution of not just food insecurity issues, but job training and overall life management support.” Stewart added: “I’m hard pressed to think of a more worthy organization, especially given how they have risen to this unusual and challenging moment. We must now rise to meet them.”

The evening was a window into the heart and soul of Lunch Break, the food and social services resource center at 121 Drs James Parker Blvd., with compelling testimonials from clients such as Chelsea Zamot and Dominique Faison, each of whom was facing homelessness, financial burdens and other challenging circumstances. They both were offered hope for a better tomorrow after receiving guidance and support from dedicated staff and volunteers. Stewart introduced this year’s honorees, which included such distinguished community leaders as Lunch Break Advisory Council Member Carol Stillwell, President and CEO of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc., Norma Todd Service Award; former Lunch Break Board President John Klein and his wife, Board Member Robin Klein, Heart to Hand Award; and Guttenplan’s Frozen Dough, A Child’s Place School, Lincroft, and Abe and Linda Littenberg, Corporate Platinum Partner Award. Gala proceeds will be used to sustain the food, clothing, outreach, mentoring, and Life Skills programs and services critical to so many individuals and families in our community who have been impacted by the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the course of the twelve major wars in which the United States has participated since our founding, our military service members have repeatedly put their lives on the line defending American values and the American way of life. Here in Holmdel Township, we’re reminded of those brave local veterans every time we reflect upon the names on our Veterans Memorial wall. We serve them by ensuring that we never take their sacrifice for granted. On the theme of “serving those who have served”, at last month’s Veterans Day Ceremony I was pleased to share that the Township Committee has established a Holmdel Veterans Initiative. This initiative will focus on ensuring that our veteran residents have easy access to a wide range of services, benefits, and discounts available to them. It will also include events and programs designed specifically with military veterans in mind. Local Historical Preservation Committee to Present A Country Christmas on December 12

Historic Montrose School at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive in Colts Neck will open for a traditional Christmas celebration this month.
Photos with Santa Claus, seasonal refreshments, music, and more will fill the historic Montrose one-room schoolhouse from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 12. The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee is sponsoring this free, traditional holiday fest at the school at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive in Colts Neck. Santa Claus will take time out from his busy schedule to pose for free photos taken by guests who should bring their own cameras, and Lillian Burry will read The Night Before Christmas to the children and adults alike. A Christmas tree inside the school will be festooned with decorations appropriate to the period. “Everyone on the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee enjoys preparing and opening Montrose School for special events that highlight our township’s unique role in American history and help keep our local history alive for future generations,” said Committee Chairperson Lillian Burry. “We invite everyone to share in the warmth and historic significance of Montrose School during this community celebration.” Commissioner Burry negotiated the purchase of the school, the only publicly-owned one-room schoolhouse in Colts Neck, for $1 from the township’s former Historical Society more than a decade ago. The committee raises funds to continue to upgrade and maintain the school.

Holiday Parenting Time As the holidays approach, most people’s stress levels increase. When you’re going through a divorce, the holidays add immeasurably to the nearly constant stress you’ve been experiencing. And, when you have children, stress can increase geometrically. This is the time when parents must summon every bit of self-control and rationality possible from deep within. Children look forward to holidays. They also love their parents. It is, therefore, essential that both parents put aside their anger and hurt so that the holidays will be as happy and fulfilling for the children as possible. Common sense should prevail. Typically holidays are alternated so that each parent has the children on a particular holiday every other year. A common example is to treat Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day as two separate holidays. Mom may have the children on Christmas Eve through noon (or some other time) on Christmas Day. Dad would then have the children for the balance of Christmas Day (and sometimes overnight until December 26). The following year would be the reverse. However, this arrangement certainly, isn’t required. Some families’ traditions revolve principally around a Christmas Eve celebration. Others do most of their celebrating on Christmas Day. Rather than alternate from year to year, keeping the holiday that is consistent with a parent’s family tradition would most likely make more sense. This year, more than in most, additional creativity may be required due to constraints the COVID-19 pandemic is placing on all of us. Large family
gatherings are discouraged as a way to minimize the chances of spreading the virus. Smaller celebrations are being encouraged. There are no set schedules or requirements for spending holidays with the children. Parents shouldn’t be afraid to adopt schedules that may seem unconventional if they fit with the children’s schedules, the parents’ new lives, and safety considerations. What is required, however, is putting the children first. They didn’t ask for the divorce. Most likely they are upset by it. Using the holidays and the children for leverage or to exact revenge on a spouse is cruel. By putting aside your anger for your children’s sake, you will increase the chances that the holidays will provide them with a welcome respite from your divorce. You may even enjoy the holidays more yourself.

Holiday Abundance
As we are deep in the throes of the holiday season, many of us are reflecting on a period, which is now almost two years in the making, that has pushed our limits in so many ways. The lessons have been abundant. The growth has been abundant. The grief has been abundant. And, let’s be honest, the wine has been abundant. And now this strange period is all the more punctuated by the holidays, and our still somewhat unsolved return to a preCovid world and mindset. The question becomes – will we ever be the same? Just like 9/11 changed the lens of our lives, Covid-19 is destined to do the same. Every season, we look forward to creating tablescapes centered around food, family, and tradition. Having blurred last year, I think we are all ready to use these holidays as a springboard back to another new normal. If there is one thing I hear from the news and from CM readers, it’s that we need hope and direction in our lives right now on many levels. Selfishly, writing is my creative outlet. My profession forces me into an empirical corner of numbers, facts, speculation, and math. These articles are my painful “life’s lesson” language. Hopefully they speak to our values of family, friends, gathering, sharing stories and food, and creating connected memories. It is with those values in mind, that we set this holiday table, with a message of abundance woven in. The analogy of inspiration for “The Table” setting goes deeper, acting as a message of gratitude more than words on a page. With the season of giving upon us, it is only fitting to talk about abundance and how abundance can affect us throughout the year. For a good portion of people, the holidays can be super stressful, especially when there’s worry around paying for gifts, coordinating travel, and family logistics. But here’s the thing, when we worry, we send the message of lack and obligation into the universe while we should be looking for abundance and celebration. When we have a mindset of abundance, we are attracting more wealth and good things in our lives. When we have a lack mindset, we’re pushing away all those abundant thoughts and things. So, when there is holiday stress around you with obligatory gift buying, travel, family drama etc., you are inviting more struggle into your life. And who wants that?!

This year I challenge you to reframe this. Break free from the feeling of obligation and lack and get back into the good feelings that the holidays are meant for. I get it, if you’re comfortable with the traditional “big box” (or little box) gift-giving, keep doing it! But if you stop and observe your feelings and thoughts around this time of year and you come up with feelings of stress or lack, then speak up! Maybe it’s time to switch your definition of giving. Perhaps decide to forego traditional gifts (we all tend to go overboard to remunerate for the guilt we manifest throughout the year), and instead, rent a cabin or a beach house, give the gift of time together, and escape and enjoy the experience of being with them. And although it’s cliché – in today’s post pandemic reprioritized world it’s never been truer. It’s more about the experience than the gifts. What could you give that would create the same feelings of receiving a gift that isn’t something you can put in a box? Think emotional, experiential abundance, not stuff, for the holidays. This all leads to hopefully a climate of gratitude. In a consumer society, contentment is a radical proposition. Recognizing abundance rather than scarcity and wanting more undermines an economy that thrives by creating unmet desires. These post-pandemic holidays should remind you that you already probably have everything you need. The idea of gratitude being a radical act just feels so... right, and needed nowadays. While it may sound privileged or idealistic, I do believe that each of us - no matter where we are in life - can find spaces and moments to sit in gratitude. Sure, we still enjoy the material things in life, but it needs to balance, and this may be how we find that abundant balance. I hope that wherever you find yourself during these holidays, you can find gratitude, and celebrate with your people. Decorate your homes and your tables for one or a few with whatever abundance feels like for you, and let us all give thanks for the things we’re most appreciative of this year – family, friends, community, health, home, a meal to enjoy, and wine on our table. I wish you a lovely, blessed, and abundant holiday. -

Colts Neck Honors Veterans Colts Neck Township held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Cedar Drive Middle School on November 11. Many community members and local dignitaries participated in the special ceremony honoring our nation’s heroes and local WWII veteran, Stan Drusdow. Specifically, Colts Neck students played a special part by contributing the national anthem and patriotic selections by the Cedar Drive Band and Chorus, the presentation of colors by Colts Neck High School’s NJROTC, opening remarks from 7th grader Ashely Austin, Reflections by 8th grader Dacian Golden, and laying of the wreath by Cedar Drive Middle School’s Student Council - Cameron Alicea, Olivia Brown, Kamaryi Crenshaw, and Emma Reisinger. “It was my distinct honor to join the Colts Neck Community in celebrating Veteran’s Day,” said Monmouth County Commissioner and Colts Neck resident Lillian Burry. “I presented 99 1/2-year-old WWII veteran Stan Drusdow with a Proclamation of Recognition. Stan served in the European campaign with General Omar Bradley at Normandy, certainly one of the “greatest generation”. Inspirational! Stan will turn 100 next April.”

The Newcomers and Neighbors’s Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas held a general meeting at the Colts Neck Community Church where members enjoyed a social hour followed by a business meeting. The featured speaker was Colts Neck General Store owner Mary Pahira who gave insight into the history of the 172-year-old building. From the secret trap door that hid the wine during prohibition, the tree trunks holding up the building, the dirt floors in the basement, and the open beams in the ceiling it is a remarkable piece of history. The club’s next meeting is January 13 at 9:30 am at Colts Neck Community Church. Local Church Hosts Veteran’s Day Dinner Last month, the Colts Neck Community Church (CNCC) hosted its annual Veteran’s Day Dinner to honor those who serve and protect our country every day. The night consisted of a free dinner, live music, and words from a special Keynote Speaker, Holmdel resident Pete Hegseth (Iraqi War Veteran, Author, and Commentator). Donations were made to multiple veteran’s charities, including the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) and Semper Fi Santa. “The Bible says we should honor to those that deserve honor, at CNCC we want to honor those who serve and sacrifice so much,” said CNCC Pastor Chris Durkin. “It is our desire to let them know that we appreciate them as citizens and neighbors.” Colts Neck Community Church is a community of people who “exist to declare and demonstrate the grace of Jesus Christ.” They offer a wide array of mission opportunities and are proud to support, giveback, and volunteer for charitable organizations and disaster relief programs. With the Christmas movie season in full swing, fans of the rom com family-friendly genre have more movies than ever from which to choose. What once was only a seasonal offering from Crown Media through two of its three channels, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, Christmas movie season is now a multi-network, two-month battle for the hearts, and viewership, of millions of fans. One star that always causes fans to swoon, and ratings to soar, is Trevor Donovan. We caught up with Trevor for this interview while he was on the set for one of his upcoming movies, The Engagement Plot, in which he stars opposite Rachel Boston. The film will release in 2022.

revor recently signed an overall deal with a new media company run by Bill Abbott called GAC Media. The network offers two channels, GAC Family and GAC Living. Trevor is one of only a few rom com stars who have Christmas movies airing on two networks this year. Ironically, one of the other stars who has a movie on both Hallmark Channel and GAC Family is Trevor’s co-star, Merritt Patterson. Their movie, Jingle Bell Princess, will air on GAC Family on December 4. Despite the many rom com movies in which Trevor has starred, USS Christmas, Two for the Win, Snowcoming, Love Fall and Order, Love on a Limb, and many others including his most recent on Hallmark Channel Nantucket Noel, he had never played in a movie about royalty. An extremely popular subject matter in the family-friendly rom com genre, the movies usually focus on a male royal falling in love with a female commoner. “It was fun to finally star in a royal movie,” said Trevor. “This one is a bit different than many, the royal is a princess played by Merritt. The movie is based on the book His Jingle Bell Princess by Barbara Dunlop.” From one type of world leader to another, Trevor recently finished shooting
his part in the movie Merritt Patterson and Reagan which will air Trevor in Jingle Bell Princess, early in 2022. A sweepcourtesy of GAC Media ing biopic on the life of the 40th US President, the movie stars Dennis Quaid in the titular role. Trevor plays Ronald Reagan’s longest-serving Secret Service agent. “Reagan was a very special experience. I was able to speak with the family of the character I play, John Barletta, and that added new depth to the role,” shared Trevor. “I also was able to ride horses on the Reagan ranch in the same spots President Reagan did. No other film has ever been able to shoot on the property which is now owned by the Young America’s Foundation. Whether it’s riding horses or playing with his beloved three dogs, Bulldog Tito, Golden Retriever Shadow, and Labrador Chance, Trevor is a friend to animals. The Battle for the Christmas Viewer Those who control our television viewing have realized there is a solid base of fans who absolutely love the Christmas movie genre. Traditional broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming channels are all producing more content for the season than ever before. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and are forever grateful for their contributions to the Christian Brothers Academy family.” The following CBA senior student-athletes committed during fall signing period: Hugh Straine (Bucknell Universaity, Track & Field), Tyler Mayerhoff (University of North Carolina, Track & Field), Robby Manse (U.S. Military Academy – West Point, Track
& Field), Colin Reilly (Tulane University, Baseball), Jack Frankovic (Lehigh University, Baseball), Shane Gazdus (Cornell University, Crew), Austin Straley (University of Pennsylvania, Crew), Ethan Wilson (College of the Holy Cross, Crew), and Nick Tapinis (Fairfield University, Crew). Straine, Mayerhoff, and Manse were all members of the 2021 Non-Public A State Championship team last spring, playing a role as standout throwers in field events. Gazdus, Straley, Wilson and Tapinis are members of CBA’s nationally-recognized crew team, which recently just returned from competing in Boston’s Head of the Charles Regatta – the largest rowing event in the world. Frankovic and Reilly are poised to lead the Academy’s pitching staff when baseball gets underway this March.

Five cadets from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T) were chosen to participate in the christening of The USS New Jersey (SSW-796) as members of the color guard at the Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA on November 13. The cadets chosen to present the Nation’s colors for the submarine’s christening were Dylan Agnese (Lincroft), Jack Arhanic (Fair Haven), Tessa Campolattaro (Rumson), Sam Puleio (Tinton Falls), and Brandon Weiss (Oceanport). “We are so proud of the five cadets from M.A.S.T who presented the Nation’s colors during the christening of the USS New Jersey, a new Virginia Class attack submarine currently under construction,” said Monmouth County Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “This is a testament to the dedicated cadets that are attending M.A.S.T and this was an incredible

opportunity for them to honor our country.” Dr. Susan DiMarco of Montclair, wife of former Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, served as the USS New Jersey’s sponsor and performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine’s bow during the ceremony. “M.A.S.T is a wonderful co-ed fouryear high school that is a part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District,” said Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Vocational School District. “Cadets that attend M.A.S.T are enrolled in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), where they learn civics, physical fitness, naval skills, physical science and leadership techniques. We are incredibly proud of the cadets chosen for this honor.”

With the holiday season in full swing, the Monmouth Museum is celebrating with its nostalgic trains display winding through the Main Gallery and a rainbow-themed giant Christmas tree. To add to the opening reception festivities on November 21, Mrs. Claus (also known as longtime employee Maureen Starace) dropped in for story time and crafts. Maureen delights in the opportunity, as it has become a family tradition started by her father. In fact, one could say Maureen is the daughter of Santa Claus himself. For 22 years, her father, Mike Hastry, closed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with his reindeer and sleigh as the official Santa Claus. While involved with the parade for more than 50 years, Mike took on the role of St. Nick from the 1980s through the early 2000s. In addition to Mike’s role as Santa for Macy’s, he would go annually to Kennedy Airport escorted by the Mayor of New York City to meet and greet children with special needs from the five boroughs. Maureen, who lives in Matawan, lit up when the Museum Executive Director approached her to lead the holiday activities as Mrs. Claus. “This would have made my father so happy,” she said. “Being Santa was a role he cherished very much. He brought tremendous delight to all the children lining the parade route and of course the many children watching the parade on TV. I’m beyond excited to welcome children to the Monmouth Museum to celebrate the holiday season as Mrs. Claus.” She continued, “He held that role close to his heart throughout his life. He passed away at 2 a.m. on December 26, 2007, almost as if he had to finish his Christmas duties that year.” Mrs. Claus will host special programming, story time, and crafts throughout December at the Monmouth Museum. Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the county’s precious natural resources, recently announced a pair of transformational donations, including the largest single gift in its 44-year history. MCF says the financial contributions are reflective of remarkable momentum and community support for its mission to create parks, save open space and farmland, safeguard wildlife and waterways, and provide educational programs to nurture the next generation of environmentalists. One of these remarkable donations, a gift of $2,000,000, is being made anonymously, with a generous philanthropist providing the funds to support the creation of a park for an underserved community in Monmouth County. The other extraordinary commitment comes from MCF Executive Committee member Gloria Nilson and her husband, Len. The planned gift, a bequest intention, will allow for the creation of The Nilson Society, a planned giving program for MCF donors who provide for the organization in their estate plans. “On behalf of all of us at MCF, and people from all walks of life who will benefit from these remarkable gifts, I want to thank both the Nilsons and our donor who wishes to remain anonymous,” said William D. Kastning, Executive Director of Monmouth Conservation Foundation. “In recent months we have heard from many people who tell us the pandemic has only heightened their appreciation for the beautiful natural spaces we protect, and that these places MCF has helped make possible have strengthened their bodies, minds and spirits.” Kastning added, “It is vital that all communities have nearby access to parks, open land, clean air and fresh water. These gifts will help ensure that is a reality for generations to come, and we look forward to sharing details of how we will put the funds into action to realize our vital shared goals. We are also confident these wonderful donations will inspire others to support our work.”

More than 4,000 volunteers gathered this fall at 70 New Jersey beaches and waterways to clean harmful debris at Clean Ocean Action’s (COA) 36th Annual Fall Beach Sweeps. Enthusiastic volunteers spent the day collecting and tabulating debris that they removed from shorelines from Bergen to Cape May Counties. The data produced from this event is combined with the data from the Spring Beach Sweeps and publicized in an annual report that provides a deeper exploration into litter on the Jersey Shore. Beach Sweeps help to reduce litter in the marine environment, where it is harmful and often lethal to wildlife. The data from the Beach Sweeps turns a one-day event into a legacy of information to improve public awareness, change wasteful habits, enforce litter laws and improve policies to reduce sources of marine debris. Marine debris is a human caused, human solved issue. “The hard work and effort of the volunteers goes beyond leaving behind a cleaner beach. Volunteers at the Beach Sweeps become citizen scientists, documenting a snap-shot of the types and amounts of litter found on the Jersey Shore. By recording the data, they are helping us work toward a future where beach cleanups are not needed because litter is prevented at the source” stated Alison Jones, Watershed Program Coordinator, Clean Ocean Action.

It’s not only a wake-up call to the small and the tall about the problem of marine debris, but provides them a way to make a difference by improving the ocean and beaches they enjoy so much. The data they collect is most important. Thanks to volunteers carefully recording what they collect over the years we know that over 7.4 million pieces of trash have been removed and these facts are being used by local, state, and federal officials to reduce sources of marine debris such as reducing single use plastics,“ said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director, Clean Ocean Action. “Waves of thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, from the small to the tall, who participated in the Beach Sweeps! Together we can all make a difference for a cleaner ocean to be enjoyed by generations to come simply by picking up litter whenever and wherever we see it. For example, a piece of debris found on a central or northern New Jersey street can travel downstream and eventually end-up in the ocean.” With gratitude, Clean Ocean Action thanks Willie’s Superbrew for its 2021 Beach Sweeps Statewide Sponsorships. Scout Brooke Jorgensen, after completing an information kiosk at Bayonet Farm, a significant step in her goal toward obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout
Brooke Jorgensen, 16, from Scouts BSA Troop 331G of Holmdel is working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Jorgensen’s Eagle project involved creating an information kiosk at the historic Harding House, once the home of longtime resident and philanthropist Laura Harding. The house is located at Bayonet Farm, a Holmdel Township owned park on Middletown Road. The kiosk is similar in style to the porch of the farmhouse and is composed of a sturdy, pest-resistant Brazilian walnut wood. The kiosk was completed in October and is situated in front of the small parking lot by the Harding House. Brooke’s Eagle project was sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU), a Holmdel-based grassroots organization formed in 1998 to protect open space. Jorgensen’s task involved meeting with CILU and township officials to determine the scope of the project, create a budget, procure funding and supplies, design, build, and erect the structure. Residents are encouraged to visit the kiosk which will be filled with information and photos for people to learn the history of the Harding farmhouse and Bayonet Farm.

The Count Basie Center for the Arts is accepting submissions for its Count Basie Center Teen + College Film Festival, with the mission to locate, showcase, and recognize student filmmakers from 7th grade all the way through college. Students can submit their films now via FilmFreeway. In April, official selections will be screened at Basie Center Cinemas at 36 White Street in Red Bank, followed by an online presentation of selections, a virtual Q&A with industry experts, and an awards ceremony for the highest vote-getters. The Count Basie Center Teen + College Film Fest is open to New Jersey students in 7th and 8th grade, high school, and college. Middle and high school students are required to reside in and attend schools in the state, while the college category is open to full-time students enrolled in New Jersey colleges, and New Jersey high school graduates attending college out-of-state but considering New Jersey as their primary, legal residence. “Year in and year out, our student film festival proves that New Jersey is full of talented young filmmakers,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “Our goal is to give those creators a platform and make filmmaking as prolific and vital in New Jersey as creating music or other forms of art.” This year’s Count Basie Center Teen + College Film Fest is presented by Bank of America. This fall, the Count Basie Center’s Fall Gala honored former board chairperson Tim Widener and his wife, Janet, in a celebration that took over the entirety of the newly-expanded Basie Center campus, including its new grand lobby, historic theater and The Vogel, the facility’s new performance venue. San Francisco band Train (Drops of Jupiter, Hey Soul Sister, Drive-by) performed to a packed house, which included a veritable who’s-who of the region’s philanthropists and com-
munity leaders. Widener, who presided over the Basie Center board during its $28 million expansion, was recognized for not only his leadership, but his devotion to the arts and arts education – the cornerstones of the Basie Center’s nonprofit mission. As part of the ceremony, the Basie Center revealed that a scholarship in the name of Tom and Janet Widener will be offered in perpetuity at the Count Basie Center’s Academy of the Arts.

Oak Hill Academy Honors Veterans
Last month, Oak Hill Academy (OHA) students carried on its tradition of honoring veterans during the school’s 21st annual Veterans Day program. More than 40 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade performed by creating various tributes, doing dramatic readings, choreographing dance ensembles, and playing instruments. A professional brass duo, and the Christian Brothers Academy Pipes and Drums also performed. Patrice Murray, OHA Director of Personnel/Administration, organized the annual program. Each year, she chooses a theme that will educate the students on a different aspect relating to the service of our veterans. This year, the themes were “How the board game Monopoly helped POW’s escape during WWII,” “Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” and “How service animals help our Veterans” amongst the traditional core themes of “Who is a Veteran,” and the “History of Veterans Day”. OHA was honored to have Navy Second Class Petty Officer Michael Dowens and OHA parent speak during the program about how his service dog, Emery, has helped him through his discharge from the military and dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The students and staff at Oak Hill were on display with Mrs. Bridget DeVivo’s tap dancers tapping to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Miss Dittloff’s chorus singing A Thanks to Our Veterans, and third grade teacher, Miss Amanda McTigue (accompanied by Mr. Tim DiDomenico) singing My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Computer teacher, Mrs. Marie Geroni, created a slide show of pictures to sync with the dramatic readings. Three students also showcased their piano playing talents. “The Veterans Day program has become an important tradition at Oak Hill Academy,” said Headmaster Joseph A. Pacelli, a US Army veteran. “The youngest generation is learning about all of our veterans and the greatest generation too. They have learned to honor, respect, and revere those in uniform.”
Trinity Hall Holds STEM Workship for Local Grade School Girls This fall, Trinity Hall, an all-girls high school, invited seventh and eighth-grade girls to its campus to participate in an afternoon STEM program. At the Halloween-themed event, called the Spooky STEM Workshop, 50 girls from local middle schools filled the school’s science and engineering labs to build a spider equipped with glowing eyes and a web. Current Trinity Hall students ran the workshop and taught the participants about engineering and design. With assistance and demonstration by the Trinity Hall student leaders and STEM faculty, the girls got hands-on experience with circuits and soldering. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce STEM concepts and design to seventh and eighth-grade girls. At Trinity Hall, the STEM curriculum requires students to take four years of engineering, three years of math and three years of lab sciences. According to the National Coalition for Girls Schools, “girls’ school graduates are six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology and three times more likely to consider engineering careers compared to girls who attend coed schools.” “The Spooky STEM Workshop was a huge success!” expressed Anna Clements, Trinity Hall senior and student leader of the workshop. “We were thrilled with the turnout, and we had eight amazing Trinity Hall students who assisted the girls in the process. There is already talk about another STEM workshop in the near future.” The mother of one participant, Melissa Cantin, conveyed that her daughter Olivia “attended the STEM workshop at Trinity Hall and truly enjoyed the entire experience. She was impressed with the students that led the workshop and couldn’t stop talking about how much fun she had.” “The welcoming spirit of the Trinity Hall community was radiating from our student leaders, and the positivity they shared with our middle school friends created an enjoyable atmosphere where the love of STEM and the

sparks of friendship were ignited,” noted Kali Lambrou, Trinity Hall STEM faculty. “At Trinity Hall, we love to share our unique approach to STEM with students in our community.
