Animal Advocacy: Puppy Mill Progress PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN
J
NJ STATE COUNCIL DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
une was a great month for puppy mill protection. Hollywood, Florida, became the 150 th locale in the country to enact a pet shop ordinance banning the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet stores, as a tool to dry up the markets for puppy mill operators. There are now over 160 cities and towns across the country with these bans, including Boston, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia. Remarkably, 60 New Jersey municipalities have enacted pet shop bans. Several states have also passed pet store regulations, including Louisiana and Maryland –both signed into law in June. So much of this critical, life-saving work is due to dedicated advocates who want to drive social reform. With such incredible public support and momentum, it is no wonder our New Jersey state legislators are moving a statewide ban. In June, New Jersey proved to be triumphant as the Senate passed S.63, a bill which will protect New Jersey consumers by prohibiting the sale of puppies from the worst puppy mills, by a 27 – 8 vote. For those that have not heard of this term, a puppy mill is an inhumane, commercial dogbreeding facility in which the health and wellbeing of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits. The state bill would require pet dealers selling to New Jersey consumers to be licensed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and free of certain Animal Welfare Act violations. The bill would also prohibit any pet dealer who violates these provisions three times from selling in the state. Additionally, S.63 addresses a number of the primary means through which puppy mills sell to unsuspecting consumers and will not harm current businesses following the law. The measure has been crafted so that neither consumers nor responsible breeders will be negatively impacted. S.63 was championed by Senator Raymond Lesniak and sponsored by Senators James Beach, Nicholas Scutari, Loretta Weinberg, Brian Stack, and Sandra Cunningham. The bill now awaits a hearing in the Assembly. We applaud the sponsors of A.2338, the Assembly version sponsored by Assemblyman Daniel Benson, and Assembly Members Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Tim Eustace, Reed Gusciora, Raj

Mukherji, Wayne DeAngelo, Troy Singleton, and Patrick Diegnan. We urge anyone looking to add a pet to their family to consider adoption first, and if that is not an option, to seek out a responsible breeder who will gladly show a potential purchaser where and how the puppies were raised and how the mother of the puppy will continue to live after the sale. The HSUS also publishes a Puppy Buyer’s Guide for consumers. We also strongly encourage New Jersey pet stores selling puppy mill puppies to transition to the humane model, followed by the largest and most successful chains in the country, where shelter and rescue pets are offered for adoption. If our movement is to succeed, we need thousands of volunteers pressing the case for animal protection – passing local animal protection ordinances, advocating for state and federal legislation, and networking with other animal protection groups. For New Jersey, the passage in the Senate gets us one step closer to the day when cruel puppy mills have nowhere left to sell. We must now work together to urge the Assembly to do the same. New Jersey’s lawmakers are standing up against animal cruelty by regulating puppy mill sales, and we couldn’t be more proud. For more information, visit www. humanesociety.org.

Piggott at mpiggot@holmdelpolice.org or Mike Michalski at mmichalski@holmdelpolice.org. The Holmdel Township Police Department was formally established by a Township Committee Ordinance in 1966. In that year, under the leadership of Chief Joseph Phillips, the Department answered 540 calls for service. In 2015, Holmdel has grown substantially and Police

Current Holmdel Chief Mioduszewski had organized a
committee to plan for the Department’s 50th Anniversary. Their first task was to design a “50th Anniversary Logo” which is displayed on commemorative pins and decals on the Patrol cars. In addition, officers have been wearing an “anniversary badge” throughout 2016 - all of which were obtained through donation. In March 2016, the Department took possession of a 1964 Ford Galaxie, a replica of the Department's first patrol car. The vehicle is displayed on the lawn at Town Hall and will be used for community programs.

WEICHERT REALTORS IN HOLMDEL TO HOST BLOOD DRIVE Please join Weichert Realtors in Holmdel for a blood drive in memory of Ava Pellicone on Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. The Pellicones of Middletown realized the importance of donating blood years ago when their family required numerous blood transfusions after experiencing complications with birth. The transfusions saved the lives of both Gail Pellicone and her daughter Mia. Sadly, they lost their beautiful daughter Ava, but were given the gift of extra time with her due to the generosity of those who donated blood. They realized at that time that someone, somewhere took time out of their day to donate blood and, in doing so, changed their lives. Weichert Realtor agents will be onsite with free hot dogs and Ralphs Italian ice. Anyone who donates blood automatically is entered into a raffle for a flat screen tv. Kristin DeNicola-Vitolo, a Weichert Realtor agent, said “The Holmdel Weichert office is committed to giving back to the communities we service. Events, such as this Blood Drive, serve as a great reminder of how we can all come together and help one another out - please consider making an appointment and saving a life today!" To reserve an appointment, email k.denicola-vitolo@weichert.com or call 732.713.8152. Donors must present photo or signature ID, must eat and drink water before donating, and donors must be healthy, at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 120 pounds. Weichert Realtors in Holmdel is located at 43 E. Main Street in Holmdel.

Letter to the Editor Dear Mayor Hinds, On behalf of my daughter, Felicia, her father, Santo, and myself, I would like to thank the Holmdel Township Department of Recreation for hosting the 2nd Annual Father & Daughter Campout on June 17. Felicia has not stopped talking about the campout. She enjoyed all the events, including karaoke, outdoor games, and especially liked the chocolate fountain and midnight walk. She and her dad are looking forward to attending again next year! I also would like to take this time to sincerely thank you for all the outstanding work that you do in serving the people of the Township of Holmdel and for your leadership as mayor. You hold a key position and you are a positive role model in our community. Thank you for being a shining example for others to follow. I will faithfully continue to pray for you and the other council members and may God bless you with wisdom, health, excellent judgement, courage, peace, and the respect and good favor of all you serve. Faith and prayer will greatly help our community. May God’s comfort, strength, and presence be sensed in times such as natural disasters, terrorist threats, or acts of senseless violence, economically difficult times, and other tragedies beyond our control. THE FOOD SPY
UNCOVERING HIDDEN EPICUREAN DELIGHTS
You know you walk into a good Asian restaurant when the majority of patrons enjoying the fare are of Asian descent. You know you walk into a good Italian restaurant when groups are smiling, busy talking with their hands and the table is full of food and wine. Solo Trattoria owner Piergeorgio Ceciarelli manages to recreate an authentic Italian style attitude and meal in the heart of Freehold Boro. The food is high-quality and presented with excellent table service starting with outstanding homemade breads and infused olive oils. This BYOB impresses all who come, and almost always come back. The Food Spy must admit, that Italian fare is a part of life (yes, some wives still cook Italian style at home “almost” every night). So the nights we choose to go out with friends and enjoy some good wine and company, we choose carefully and if it’s Italian, it has to be worthy, consistent and fresh. Solo is one of those places! The simple and sometimes crowded dining room becomes our night out – and we are NEVER disappointed. The specials are always a “go-to” as Piergeorgio and the chefs pride themselves on market daily produce, meat and fish complemented by fresh and special pastas and sauces. An enduring and endearing quality that we love at Solo is Piergeorgio strongly supports local growers and ALL the produce within the menu is Jersey Grown. A very old-school and ethnic quality that only adds the attraction and somehow to the taste and freshness. The appetizers are so well constructed that they are tough to get past on the menu. The highlights are Patanine Fritte which are homemade potato chips with a gorgonzola truffle sauce, Crostino Tonna E Cipolla is a delightful Artisanal bread topped with fresh mozzarella, Sicilian preserved tuna, onions and olives. The Polpettine Fritte are veal
18
meatballs with Jersey long hot peppers and Ricotta, and the Focaccia Fresh Mozzarella with Prosciutto di Parma and roasted peppers is to die for. Frankly, a bottle of wine and a few of the above and we could have stopped there, but the rest of the menu is too inviting. So on to the pasta course! The pasta list reminds us of a small local café outside a cobblestoned piazza in Rome. The Farfalle were bowties served with shrimp and scallops in a secret family sauce. The hearty Bucatini Rustica is mushrooms, peas and sausage with touch of spices and cream. The spaghetti is served with clams, cannellini beans, broccoli rabe and garlic oil. The Pappardelle Amalfi is served with Shrimp, tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms and fresh herbs in a light lemon cream sauce and the Risotto was (another killer dish), served with white truffle oil, day boat scallops and pesto – oh my goodness! There’s more pasta, but we have to keep moving, we haven’t even gotten to the secondi (the entre!) The Food Spy favorite, which is so unique and special it makes the entire trip here worthwhile, is the fresh Fiocchetti (or Beggars Purses) filled with a homemade pear and asiago ricotta in light walnut cream sauce. The mouth is watering just typing the words - this dish is a “must try” and one of the Food Spy’s favorites of all time. For the main course, we recommend that you follow the servers lead on the specials. The night we were there last we went with an amazing light and large flake Bronzino brushed with olive oil. The standard veal, chicken and eggplant dishes are very far above average but the Veal Milanese with the arugula and shaved parmesan as well as the Aged Angus Porterhouse brushed with Tuscan olive oil, garlic and rosemary were complete standouts. If you have room for dessert, the tray of fresh Italian delights will overwhelm you and

Regular readers of The Table know we absorb motivational and success material with relevant parallels in business, investing and life. Last month we started a series of the 7 Keys to Risk and Success to explore effective habits with parallels to family, business and finance (1) Identify specific goals, (2) Write down your action plan, (3) Have nonstop determination to reach your goal, (4) Turn your goals into genuine service which helps others, (5) Follow an unfailing code of honesty and integrity, (6) Be creative and have willingness to try the untried, (7) Faith and an absolute belief that you WILL succeed. #2 WRITE DOWN YOUR ACTION PLAN This month we will touch upon Key #2 – Writing a Step by Step Action Plan. Nothing of any substance or longevity gets built (blueprints), played (sheet music) or eaten (recipe) without a written plan. Shouldn’t your life warrant the same? Most go through life using nothing more than paystubs and monthly bank and investment statements as a milestone guide (like a carrot on a stick). Imagine having an outline of your family objectives defined. A virtual roadmap to your family goals with potential roadblocks, problems and detours included. If you don’t know where you’re going and don’t have a roadmap to follow, how can you possibly get there? Why not arm yourself with one of the most proven and successful insurance policies ever created? A written plan of your family’s goals, on paper, in writing. An action plan. You will be putting powerful conscious and subconscious forces within yourself to work and using an incredible, proven goal achieving secret that becomes and creates a basis for your decisions! Remember from last month – YOUR LEVEL OF SUCCESS IS COMPLETLEY UP TO YOU and formed by the decisions you make every day. Wait, say that again… YOUR LEVEL OF SUCCESS IS COMPLETLEY UP TO YOU and formed by the decisions you make every day. Don’t be afraid to speak to experts or advisors for direction and ideas - but make it happen… CONTEMPLATE YOUR PLAN AND WRITE IT DOWN. It’s NEVER too late. I know it sounds corny and cliché (know any organized people that are “list makers”?). History and data prove this will increase your odds of decisiveness and success! TIP OF THE MONTH: COMPASSIONATE COMMUNICATION In our default state, our brains constantly get in the way of effective communication. The mind is sometimes lazy, angry, immature, and distracted – and can make a difficult conversation impossible. There is a strategy called Compassionate Communication compiled from results of brain scans and data collected from workshops at Loyola University - clinical data collected in couple’s therapy and caregivers coping with
20
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
patient suffering. The goal is to prove that one can position a conversation to lead to a satisfying conclusion. Whether you are negotiating with your boss, your spouse or your kids, the brain works the same way and responds to the same cues. You don’t have to understand how Compassionate Communication works. You just have to do it. I’ve boiled down the takeaways: • Make sure you are relaxed; close your eyes and relax for 30 seconds, roll your neck, yawning several times before (not during) the meeting will do the trick • Never speak for more than 20-30 seconds at a time. After that the other person’s window of attention closes. • Use positive speech; you will need at least three positives to overcome the effect of every negative word used • Speak slowly; pause between words. This is critical, but really hard to do. • Respond to the other person; do not shift the conversation. • The brain can only hold onto about four ideas at one time. Across a wide range of settings, this can be an excellent tool for conflict resolution but also for simply getting your point across and setting the tone for a good meeting, relationship or weekend.

Brendan Clark joined Cub Scouts at age 7, earning his Arrow of Light advancement to enter Boy Scouts in March 2009. During his tenure, Brendan held the leadership position of Quartermaster, where he was responsible for the troop shed and all troop gear. He also learned how to plan and accomplish challenging goals by completing advancement requirements for all ranks of Boy Scouting until ultimately achieving Eagle on June 23, 2016. For his Eagle Project, he led all project stages to build a Prayer Patio for the Colts Neck Reformed Church. Brendan also played Varsity Golf for Christian Brothers Academy for four years, becoming Captain of the team his senior year. He was actively involved in SADD, LaSallian Youth and Model United Nations Clubs, and graduated the Academy with honors in May 2016. He is headed to Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences to study for a career in the medical field. Chris DeCarolis joined Cub Scouts in 2007, received the Arrow of Light in February of 2009, and joined Boy Scout Troop 290 in March of 2009. In September of 2009, he joined Troop 85 in Morganville and advanced successfully through all the ranks, ultimately achieving the rank of Eagle Scout on December 9, 2015. During his tenure in Troop 85, Chris was a Patrol Leader for three years and a Troop Guide for two years. He earned 26 Merit badges and received the World Conservation Award. His Eagle Scout project was to renovate the children’s garden adjacent to the Colts Neck Library. This project was completed in September 2015 and involved 130 hours of labor by volunteers and instrumental leadership from Eagle Scout Harry Cross of Morganville Flower Farm. Chris could not have achieved his goals without the help of his fellow scouts, adult troop leaders, Colts Neck ROTC, and family and friends. Chris attended the Science and Engineering magnet program at Manalapan High, was a member of the soccer and track team, the National Honor Society and is an AP Scholar. Chris is also an accomplished guitarist who donated over 300 hours of community service with other talented musicians to help raise thousands of dollars for worthy medical causes and victims of natural disasters throughout New Jersey. Chris will attend the University of Maryland in the fall of 2016 and pursue degrees in Computer Science, Math and Music. The DeCarolis Family wants to thank Mr. Harry Cross, owner of the Morganville Flower Farm, who generously donated his knowledge, time and over 50 beautiful perennials to adorn the Children’s Garden at the Colts Neck Library.

During the project, he and his fellow Scouts from Troop 85 put in more than 140 hours of effort and cleared the trail from overgrowth and fallen trees/limbs, reconstructed and rearranged the placement of trail map signs, reconstructed the split-railed fence at the entrance, and cleaned the picnic table at the entrance. Will graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in May where he was active in LaSallian Youth, SADD, Student Council, and a four-year Varsity athlete on the Track & Field team. Will is headed to Cornell University this month with plans to pursue an Engineering degree, while also competing in the shot put and discus as a thrower for the Cornell Track & Field team. Will would like to thank the Scouts and dads of Troop 85, and friends and family who helped with his project. Many hands make light work. Final Thoughts: These Eagles would like to thank Boy Scout leaders Tom McCuiston, Ray Gloyde, Joe Lelesi - and all the other troop men and women who helped develop them as scouts and young men.

MOTION (ALSO, NOTICE OF MOTION) – a document filed with the court which sets forth requests for court action during the divorce process, e.g., temporary custody, temporary support, and issues related to discovery. The motion is accompanied by a certification (see above) which provides the factual reasons for the court actions being requested. PENDENTE LITE – Latin for pending litigation. It means temporary in most contexts, as in pendente lite custody and pendente lite support, and is intended as an interim ruling, until a final ruling is made. SERENA DIMASO A quintessential part of Holmdel & Monmouth County STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Monmouth County Freeholder Serena DiMaso was preparing for her role as community-maker long before she realized that was her calling.

raduating St. John’s University School of Law in 1987 and receiving a Juris Doctorate, she was the recipient of a Citizenship award from St. John’s University and the Re Gestae award from St. John’s School of Law. Serena is also a 2004 graduate of the Christine Todd Whitman Excellence in Public Service Series. This 12-month program taught women how to become a better public servant, or assist others in being the best public servant. She noted that one of the speakers said, “If you can’t be the queen, be the queen maker!” Serena DiMaso did
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
her part in being a queen maker, yet she was destined to become the Queen one day! Just after graduating law school, Serena married her husband Dr. Gerald DiMaso, and they started their family. After a close friend encouraged them to visit Holmdel 24 years ago, they decided it would be a great place to raise their growing family. The rest, as they say, is history! Serena began to volunteer and participated at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church in 1995.
“I still volunteer at the Church today.” As her four children went through the Holmdel school system, Serena remained involved in all of the Holmdel Board of Education/Parent Groups from 1994-2009. From the same time, she participated in Holmdel Youth Athletic Association (HYAA) where she was League president of various age groups for soccer, basketball and baseball. Her husband is currently the HYAA president, so she volunteers with some of the events he runs. From 2002 to 2013, Serena was involved with various clubs and committees at Christian Brothers Academy Mother’s Club and the three-year Co-Chair for their Art Auction; as well as a member of the Red Bank Catholic High School Mother’s Club from 2006 to 2013. In 2015, Serena was recognized as a “Woman of Distinction” by the Jersey Shore Girl Scouts.
She explained, “They choose women whom they believe are good role models for girl scouts to emulate. We are women from all walks of life who have become leaders in our community in one way or another.” Serena and Gerald’s four children (Jerry, 27, Matt, 26, Alana, 24, and Nick, 21) are now busy following their own paths in the world. Observing how their mother gave countless hours to volunteering, they learned firsthand the importance of giving back. “They are all very much community-minded. I am very proud of each of them,” said Serena proudly. Continuing to serve the community, Serena held the position of Holmdel Township Committeewoman from 2006 to 2010. She was Mayor of Holmdel Township from 2006 to 2010 and Deputy Mayor from 2011 to 2012. While on the Township Committee, she was active in discussions that resulted in changes being made to the former Bell Labs complex to give it a second life in the community. “We met with several possible developers until we found the right combination for the community. The building was a difficult one to retrofit because of its size and complexity. Having only one set of utilities for the entire building proved a challenge as well. Somerset Developers offered a unique opportunity for our community, a place to live, work and play.” During her time on the Township Committee, Serena also supported the preservation of open space within the township, and was an advocate for expanding shared services and responsible budget-
ing. She has been on the Holmdel Township September 11 Memorial Committee from 2003 to the present. Serena was on the Bayshore Community Hospital Board of Trustees when it merged with Meridian; and has been on the Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Board since 2007. She currently serves on the Meridian Hospitals Corporation Board of Trustees and is the Meridian Foundation Chair. And she is also the National Chair of membership for the National Foundation of Women Legislators (NFWL). She explained how she assisted this group last October. “One of our initiatives at the NFWL is a partnership with Office Depot Foundation in bringing backpacks and school supplies to deserving students. Last year, I delivered 150 backpacks to Red Bank Primary Schools and this year I hope to have Freehold Borough participate. I had a wonderful time meeting the children. They were absolutely adorable and loved the backpacks.” In 2012, Serena was appointed to the Board of Chosen Freeholders to fill a seat vacated by Freeholder Robert Clifton and she ran for the unexpired term. In 2013, she served as Deputy Director and ran for the full three-year term. In 2014, she was sworn in to a second elected term on the Board of Chosen Freeholders. Serena served as Deputy Director for 2013, 2015, and 2016. She is also the freeholder liaison to nine county divisions including the Improvement Authority and County Planning Board. Serena was asked if as a young college student she ever thought of running for Mayor or becoming a Freeholder one day. She replied, “My grandmother always said I was going to be Senator someday, so I guess it was always in the back of my mind that I would enter the world of politics. I was always involved in student government in high school, college, and law school, so there is a natural progression.” Serena became a member of the Holmdel First Aid Squad in 2007 and continues to actively serve. She said there are so many stories in which it was evident that she and everyone on the squad impacted an individual or a family. “Each time you show up at someone’s home the circumstances are different, but the underlying need is the same. For me, saving a life has the most impact on me. To know that I had a hand in that miracle is the best reward.” With all that she has accomplished in the township, school systems and in the county, Serena was asked if there was any moment
she would highlight as significant or something that has impacted others during her time in office. She answered, “I like the team mentality, so there isn’t one thing or another that “I” did. We all worked together to make a better quality of life for the town. Whether it be the handicapped playgrounds or bronze honorarium to Mr. Blejwas that we did when I was Village school president or the Veteran’s Memorial, or the concession stand and improvements at Cross Farm Park or something simple like changing the thermostats at the senior center so the seniors wouldn’t be cold when they came in to play bridge, when I was Mayor, it’s all about creating the best quality of life for all the residents. After Sandy, as a County Freeholder, making sure people got what they needed to make it through - clothes, food, a hug – and whatever it took until they got back into their homes. Then being able to help countless numbers of families get through the red tape and get their homes back. It was all significant and impactful.” There isn’t a specific person who has inspired Serena to maintain a community-minded outlook. “I wasn’t inspired by just one person. There were many people who I wanted to emulate by doing good things for others like they had.” She did emphasize, “I know that without the support of my husband, much of what I do would not be possible. He is very patient and understanding, and knows making this world a better place for our children is what makes me happiest.” Two final questions were asked of Serena. How would you describe Serena DiMaso? And, what does she want to leave behind as her legacy? “These are tough ones, because it’s not about Serena DiMaso, it really never has been. It’s about the privilege of serving my community. While that sounds corny, that’s who I am. I am grateful I’ve been blessed with such a beautiful life and helping others is my way of being thankful for that grace.” And her answer to the second question was, “My personal legacy would be my children. I’m confident they will continue to be productive members of society and will follow the example set by their parents. My public service legacy? A long time ago someone told me to always reach back and pull someone up along with you, I have tried to do that no matter where I was or what I was doing, and I hope others do the same.” Well said, Serena, and well done!

From the Desk of Lillian Burry Open Space Pace Interesting news for Monmouth County is the date has been selected for the Open Space Pace. This year the event is scheduled to be held on September 17, 2016. The Open Space Pace was created to celebrate the horse, New Jersey’s official state animal and to promote Open Space in New Jersey, our nation’s most densely populated state. Open Space Pace is the primary activity held in support of non-profit organizations that promote Open Space in New Jersey for the equine, agricultural and recreation industries. The theme of this year’s parade will be a “Salute to Police and Firefighters”. Two of our local high schools, Freehold Township and Middletown North, will be sending their marching bands. Also featured will be antique cars, various equine groups, as well as what seems to be all the rage these days - Food Trucks! They will be serving American, Mexican, Italian foods and of course deserts. This is a “Save the Date” you really won’t want to miss. In the Palm of Your Hand On another note, the Monmouth County Library System has recently developed a new campaign designed to promote library services for patrons to use on smart phones, tablets and computers. The “In the Palm of Your Hand” project is a six-month effort to highlight the variety of ways, means, and sources available using the modern technology and programs already in place at the Monmouth County Library, at home or on the go. Throughout the years the Monmouth County Library has increasingly kept up with the changing technology,
sophisticated equipment and new ideas to meet the needs of library patrons. The library provides its information and research technology both within the buildings and with eBooks and downloadable audiobooks, movies and magazines that can be accessed through MonCoLibrary, a free app that makes it possible to carry the library wherever you are, making research and enjoyment available virtually anywhere. As liaison to the Monmouth County Library System, I am particularly proud of this innovative concept. “In the Palm of Your Hand” undoubtedly bridges the gap on how one went about utilizing the endless library resources available in the past and catapults us into being able to acquire yet even more invaluable information the Monmouth County Library System has available to offer and puts it all right at our fingertips. Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies One final topic of interest is our Monmouth County Sheriff’s office is seeking re-accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Law Enforcement Division was originally accredited by the CALEA in 1998, and was subsequently reaccredited five times. Reaccreditation is required every three years. Also serving as liaison to the Sheriff’s Department and the Police Academy I remain a stalwart supporter and believe a full accreditation is forthcoming. Regarding the Monmouth County Police Academy, they are seeking to achieve accreditation for the first time and if successful, they will be the only CALEA accredited academy in the state, and will receive the prestigious CALEA TriArch Award for simultaneous accreditation of law enforcement, communications, and training academy. Lillian G. Burry is a Freeholder for the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and a Colts Neck resident.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Colts Neck Rockfest Back for 9th Year! Two-Day Concert for Locals Featuring Area Bands Colts Neck Rockfest 2016 is back again, and packed with talented local musicians! Head over to Bucks Mill Park, located on Bucks Mill Road in Colts Neck on September 23, 2016 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m., the Matt O’Ree band will headline and close the night out. On September 24, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Morrocan Sheepherders will headline. Weather permitting, a bonfire will be blazing both nights. Everyone is invited to this two-day extravaganza, the entry cost is $10 per car and the event is sponsored once again by the Colts Neck Business Association. Founder of the event Steve Warendorf started Colts Neck Rockfest in August of 2008. “I had the idea to have a little, free concert with a few musical acts at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. My point was always to utilize the beautiful spaces we have available in town,” said Warendorf. In 2008, the musical acts were the Moroccan Sheepherders, Bullet Bob and the Colts, as well as a few acoustic artists. “It was basically a backyard barbecue held at the park. There were probably 30 people in attendance. It’s interesting to note that this was the Moroccan Sheepherders’ very first NJ cover music gig, as we were an original act from 1996 until then,” added Warendorf, who is a member of this band. Warendorf said he enjoys putting together a couple of events throughout the year, sometimes raising money for charities. “With Rockfest, just being able to break even and be able to put smiles on people’s faces, musicians and event goers alike, while utilizing the great park that we have available as resi-
dents is great. The young bands have a great place to bring their friends and families to see them play, while also getting new exposure. As a musician and the event founder, I also get a chance to play during the concert.” Steve Warendorf and his wife Michelle grew up in Colts Neck and have lived there for more than 40 years. Other than a few years in Red Bank and a short stint in Jersey City, he professes to definitely be a “townie.” Colts Neck Rockfest has changed quite a bit since its first concert in 2008. The start and end times have increased to allow more bands to perform, and because of the success – the concert is now spanning two days. There are varied musical acts ranging from Reggae to Latin to Classic Rock to Original music. Many vendors selling hand crafted goods and services, as well as food vendors will also be on hand. “Throughout its eight-year existence, the event has always pleased both the young and old,” said Warendorf. “It’s a no-brainer having Rockfest in Colts Neck. It’s a beautiful park with grills and a perfect space for the bands to play. We also sell Rockfest t-shirts and sweatshirts, which you will soon be able to view and buy on our website at www.sheepherders. com/cnrf,” said Warendorf. For more information about Colts Neck Rockfest 2016, visit the website as well as their Facebook page – Colts Neck Rockfest, or email coltsneckrockfest@gmail.com.

It is a tremendous accomplishment that has not only earned them accolades from their peers and colleagues, but has also rewarded Joseph Brando, owner of J. Vincent Jewelers in Colts Neck, with an exciting opportunity to visit the De Beers Victor Mine, Ontario’s first and only diamond mine from August 16 through August 18, 2016. Officially opened in July 2007, the Victor Mine is a fly-in/fly-out remote mine approximately 700 miles north of Toronto in the James Bay Lowlands of northern Ontario. Forevermark President Charles Stanley stated, “We are delighted to partner with Joe and his company J Vincent Jewelers. Forevermark prides itself in the selection of our diamonds and we are equally selective in choosing our partners. COLTS NECK FIRE CO#1 HELD
ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC & BARBECUE COLTS NECK FIRE COMPANY # held its annual Golf Classic and Barbecue at Pebble Creek Golf Club on July firemen as well as friends, family and residents of Colts Neck and neighboring towns. The event was sponsored by Beach Electric Company Inc. and The Black and Brogan Foundation. Unfortunately, no one won the $10,000 Hole in One Prize sponsored by Lairds Applejack. The golfers did enjoy a game of “Beat the Pro,” during which they went against a golf pro to try to win extra money. It was great fun and a way for the Fire Company to receive additional funds. Some golfers were actually able to beat the pro golfer. Chairman Mike Romano, Co-Chairs Bob Black and Jim Genke worked together to get Beach Electric Company Inc. and Black and
Brogan Foundation as their big event sponsors. SERVPRO sponsored the barbecue, which was held at Firehouse #1 and catered by First Choice Catering. Prizes were donated by businesses in and around town and one of the big prizes was a foursome golf package at Trump National Golf Course, noted Romano. He added that some of the businesses that donated included Shore Point Distributors, J Vincent Jewelers, Colts Neck Pharmacy, Colts Neck Hotel, Sakoutis Bros, Folio Art, Mulberry Market, I Play America, T & M Associates, Perkins, La Ginestra Pizzeria, Cuzzin’s Pizzeria, Greenhouse Gallery Florist, Huddy’s, Ashford & Grace Fine Jewelers, Holmdel Funeral Home, Bella Italia, Nails Plus, Jersey Coast Fire Equipment, Community Magazine, Absolute Fire, Fail Safe, Tasc Fire, Slope Brook

Oak Hill Academy Class of 2016 Graduates on to Top Schools
On June 10, 2016, the Class of 2016 graduated from Oak Hill Academy at the annual graduation ceremony held in the Scire Student Activities Center. Their guest speaker, Dorothy Borg, was the original Latin teacher at Oak Hill Academy. She was the perfect person to address the graduates given it was the 35th anniversary of the school. She spoke about all of the fine preparation the Oak Hill students have and the positive journeys they have in front of them. This was certainly true based on the number of acceptances and choices the Class of 2016 had after a very productive and fulfilling school year. The OHA Class of 2016 had many things to be proud of during this past year. The math team finished first in the competition held at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen. At the regional level of the nationally recognized Math Counts competition, Oak Hill finished first in Private/Parochial
schools and sixth overall. Two Oak Hill students finished in the top ten which is a feat never accomplished by any private/ parochial school. Oak Hill’s Model United Nations Team won the Best Delegation Award at the Christian Brothers Academy Model United Nations competition in November. The Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Teams both finished first place in their division of the Jim Carrigan-Ferris Antoon Monmouth County Intermediate School Soccer League. The girls went on to win the league championship. Oak Hill teams placed first in both the fall and spring Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T.) jeopardy style academic competition. These are just a few of the highlights that the Class of 2016 brought to the table this year. It was due to their many strengths that they had so many options to continue their academic careers. With a graduating class of 48, Oak Hill Academy graduates will be going to 20 different high schools! This class was accepted to many different high schools; so there were some choices to be made. Oak Hill had many acceptances into the very prestigious County Vocational Programs such as High Tech and the Marine Academy of Science & Technology, Red Bank Regional Engineering, and the Freehold Regional Specialized Programs such as Colts Neck Law, Howell Performing Arts, and Freehold Global Studies. The school’s largest acceptances were to the parochial schools in the area. Finally, in addition to their public school districts, students earned the right to attend the following private schools: Lawrenceville, Phillips Exeter, Peddie, Hun, St. Paul’s, Princeton Day, and Ranney School. Congratulations to all these fine graduates!

Letter to the Editor Hi, my name is Otis and I was rescued from the South Korean meat trade. In case you didn’t know, South Korea is the only country in the world known to solely raise dogs on intensive dog farming facilities to supply the demand for dog meat and associated products. The meat trade dogs live in small barren cages, are exposed to all of the elements and are given just enough food to survive. They are kept in crowded cages and routinely suffer from disease, injury and malnutrition. As if that weren’t bad enough, they are also the subject of terrible,
daily neglect and at times direct cruelty. The day. I have learned that humans often come dog meat traders purchase dogs only from with good treats and I like that! Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel’s Hebrew School Award Ceremony Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel’s Hebrew School celebrated another successful year of Jewish education with an award ceremony on June 5, 2016 parents looked on with Pride as their children received awards indicating their level of achievement in Hebrew reading. The Sheila Weisfeld Chabad Hebrew School is now entering into its 6th year. Registration is open to the whole community, regardless of background or affiliation. “There are many parents who are not ready to make the commitment to enroll their chil-
dren in a full-service Jewish Day School.” explains Rabbi Galperin, director of the Chabad Jewish Center, “This program offers a first taste of Jewish learning in a creative, joyful, hands-on and interesting way.” The hands-on learning style encourages the children to be active rather than passive learners. As Mrs. Illyce Williams, a parent says, “Jewish values and tradition are taught and brought down to the children in a way that no other Jewish Hebrew School has been able to do.” “Our school’s underlying approach is for the children to enjoy the time spent at Hebrew
School so that they are left with positive experiences and a greater appreciation for Jewish education,” explains Mrs. Rochi Galperin, director of Chabad’s Hebrew School. The program is thus carefully blended with games, incentives, crafts, dramatics, family celebrations and other exciting extra-curricular activities. There are spots available for the upcoming School year. The Sheila Weisfeld Chabad Hebrew School, is housed at the Village School in Holmdel. Classes are held on Sunday mornings, and are offered for children aged 5-13. For more information about Hebrew School, and Bar/Bat mitzvah lessons, call 732.772.1998, e-mail info@Jewishholmdel.org or visit www.Jewishholmdel.org.
