Chapel Beach Club in Sea Bright will once again welcome friends and supporters of the VNA for a fun and casual evening by the sea. Longtime VNA Board Trustees

The seaside will come alive with fun, food and music to support Visiting Nurse Association Health Group’s mission of caring for those in need.

Liz and Tom Thees will be honored for their commitment and contributions to the organization. The evening’s proceeds will benefit patients in need who rely on VNA Health Group’s broad array of community-based health programs, providing vital preventive and primary health care as well as supportive services. The 2016 inaugural Beach Ball met with rave reviews. Under a moonlit sky with brightly colored beach balls swaying in the breeze, a sellout gathering of 550 VNA Health Group supporters enjoyed the late summer evening in the sand while raising over $350,000 to benefit the organization’s programs and services. Beach Ball attendees will enjoy an array of gastronomic offerings from some of the area’s most popular food trucks. Revelers can memorialize

the night with pictures from the The Selfie Social photo station while sipping libations from the “Bellini and ‘Tini Bar” and the "Cocktail Caravan". As the stars begin to sparkle in the night sky, partygoers can cozy up to the fire pit for s’mores and dance the night away to the music of Rhythm Shop. The Beach Ball will take place Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at Chapel Beach Club in Sea Bright. Tickets for general/open seating are $275 per person. Bermuda Nights Fundraiser Raises Funds for CPC Behavioral Healthcare 1

CPC hosted its “Bermuda Nights” Benefit on July 28, 2017 at Navesink Country Club in Middletown, and successfully raised funds for important services throughout Monmouth County. The event was full of enthusiastic supporters taking part in the Wine Wheel, multiple gift auctions and listening and dancing to Bobby Bandiera. Co-chairs of the event, Tom Duffy, CFP of Oceanport and Marie Noglows of Fair Haven expressed their gratitude to everyone who came out to benefit CPC and that they were “honored to lead this important effort to raise funds to provide counseling services that will give people in our community an opportunity for hope and recovery.” The night honored the important community achievements of both businesses and individuals, including Raymond Eckhoff, Rumson; Cowan, Gunteski & Co., P.A., Tinton Falls and Toms River; Two River Community Bank, Tinton Falls; and Lori and Jim Romer,

Inaugural Run for Hope to Benefit The Ashley Lauren Foundation Join in and support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month on Sunday, September 24, 2017 as The Ashley Lauren Foundation and Brielle Ale House hosts its inaugural Run for Hope. The 5K Race or 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk participants will receive a t-shirt and access to the post-race party sponsored by the Brielle Ale House. Other post-race activities include face painting and inflatables for children, a push-up/plank challenge, music, gift basket raffles, 50/50 and so much more! The Ashley Lauren Foundation, a nonprofit based out of Spring Lake and serving all of New Jersey, provides financial assistance, emotional support and many other programs to children and families suffering from the hardships of

The amount of information and stuff to read out there is no doubt daunting and overwhelming, like this article for example, we all need the “cliff notes” – short and sweet. I love the 80/20 Rule. Today I’m using it to state that 20% of your actions produce 80% of your results. Here are five strategies that make up the 20% that will produce 80% of the results when it comes to getting stuff done and living life fulfilled. #1. In my business, I preach strategy, patience, planning and the long haul. But now, I’m changing lanes (blinker on). Take a minute, and be very clear what you want to be doing 90 days from now. Experts say that the human brain loses focus every 90 days or so. Instead of fighting that, play into it. Paint a very clear picture, 90 days from now, what does your life look like? What is your mental state? Be very specific and measurable. For example, wanting to lose weight and be happier is a great idea, but it’s not a very clear picture. On the other hand, 90 days from now I’m going to drop X pounds and be home for dinner 4/5 nights, that’s measurable. Where do you want to be 90 days from now? Paint a picture and make it happen! #2. Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. We all know that getting started is the hardest part. A rocket burns 40% of its fuel on the way to space at liftoff. In physics, this is known as “STATIC MOMENTUM” - the amount of energy it takes to get an object in motion. This is why it is so hard to start things moving – businesses, diets, etc. Once the rocket fights through the atmosphere, it spends more exploring and navigating than burning fuel. Personal relationships are just the opposite. They spend time in space drifting and navigating and when it’s time to come down to earth, the capsule heats up and you have to enter the atmosphere at the right angle and at the right speed or you threaten the mission. This is why the balance between business and personal is a challenge – the missions come from different directions. Bottom line, don’t spend so much time waiting for the perfect situation, person or moment, take that first step, take action (personally AND professionally). #3. Have a cadence of accountability. In this 2017 world, information is not the problem, accountability is. The world is FULL of good ideas, it’s execution that’s lacking. For everything you’re trying to improve, have something or someone that holds you accountable. We all need it. Literally have someone accountable to the goal that you set (perhaps a coach to hold your feet to the fire). If it’s important to you, you must find a way to have an accountability system behind it. If you’re trying to improve nutrition, maybe you have someone weigh you in or use a daily app that checks in with you (why do you think Weight Watchers has been successful for decades? Because you have to “weigh in”). Having a cadence of accountability

does not mean that you’re weak, it just means you’re human - we all need it. The ones that are the most consistent, and see the best results, have someone or something holding them accountable – “weigh in”! #4. Ask yourself the cliché question: Do I see myself doing this five years from now? If the answer is no, just stop now, and find something else. This is why people struggle with yo-yo results in diet and in business. They’re on it for a while and then off of it. Why? Because they committed to something that is not fun, too intense, or not sustainable long-term. Stop looking for the quickfixes, they may work for a month, but five years from now, where are you? Pick stuff (nutrition, fitness, business habits and ideas, etc.) that you enjoy doing, and you can see yourself doing it long-term - you’ll see better results. #5. This is not a dress rehearsal. I think sometimes we’re so freakin’ busy that we forget this is not a dress rehearsal. This is life. We will never have another September 2017 to redo. We all go through phases where we get lazy and complacent and just coast along. This is the real thing, and you have one shot – we are all on this earth for a VERY fleeting period of time. You’ll never get this day back – and when you’re at the end of your line, promise me, you’ll wish you had more. Why not make the best of the time you’re here so that you can be healthy, happy, be around for your family, and enjoy the life that you’re living? This is not a dress rehearsal. Live every month like it was your last. Any or all of these five thoughts, kept top of mind and acted upon can give you 80% of the results you’re looking for. Hey, only pick one (20%) if you’d like – but give it a shot! Which one worked best for you – let me know.

The following are a few things we learned in the wild west wilderness this year.

We hiked the Crown Jewel of the Continent, Glacier National Park. Established in 1910, this iconic beauty is our country’s 10th named national park rich with glacier carved perfect peaks, turquoise and emerald lakes and rich wildlife. The park is comprised of 1600 square miles and showcases much of its beauty by traveling the Going-To-The-Sun-Road. This twisting and sometimes terrorizing ride hugs deep gorges and hair pin turns. Students of all ages enjoy (or not!) 50 miles of winding wonder over the continental divide with breathtaking views and vertical vistas. Lifelong learners climb 6,640 feet to the top of Logan’s Pass to trek alongside long bearded mountain goats grazing on snowy patches of ice in July. When’s the last time you caught sight of a pair of big horned rams? Every step in this classroom was a new experience. We learned that Glacier National Park is linked with Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park which created the world’s first International Peace Park. In 1995, this Peace Park became recognized as a World Heritage Site that showcases grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, bull trout and bison. The park maintains 71 species of mammals, 24 species of fish and symbolizes hope and a vision of unity for all. Visitors from around the globe converge with nature to celebrate the wonder of creation. We shared a shuttle with nature

enthusiasts from Germany, Australia, Canada and the Canary Islands as we learned about more than 730 miles of hiking trails and climb options of over 10,000 feet skyward. We rode horses most days to frame our western adventure. Taking a class in the great outdoors Montana-style included bison burgers, big sky BBQs, chuck wagons and swooning cowboys telling tales of living on the range. Our fourth generation rancher and his team of wranglers made sure we agreed with Franklin Delano Roosevelt who once said, “There’s nothing more American than visiting our parks.” We couldn’t agree more. Keep your return to school learning adventurous and live well!

nfinite Love and the Middletown Fire Department coordinated their efforts and held the first annual Shave a Hero/Save a Hero fundraising event on July 29, 2017 at Community Fire Station #4 in Leonardo. Besides the shaving portion of the event, there was a DJ, balloon artist, face painting, raffle baskets, and food, as well as cakes, plants and jewelry for sale. A Dunk Tank was available and children enjoyed dunking the firefighters. An estimated 400-500 people attended throughout the four-hour event and at least 70 heads were shaved. Andrea Verdone Gorsegner, founder of Infinite Love for Kids Fighting Cancer, said the event raised over $40,000 for childhood cancer research. “Thanks to our shavees, our volunteers, sponsors and the community, our 1st annual Shave a Hero/Save a Hero event was more successful then we had imagined.” Six professional hair stylists volunteered to do the shaving, including Mr. Bill Verdone, and some of the Middletown Firefighters. Police, fire and first aid representatives

from Keansburg, Fair Haven, Holmdel, Little Silver, Long Branch, Union Beach, Highlands, South Amboy and Howell volunteered to be shaved. Six principals from Middletown Schools also participated. Three of them had asked students to donate a dollar to Infinite Love, which meant their name was put in a drawing and the winning student got to shave their Principal’s head! Some childhood cancer survivors also shaved a few of the firefighters’ heads, including Amelia Carter, a ewing sarcoma survivor who shaved her

dad Jason’s head. Children as young as three allowed themselves to be shaved, as well as men from 20 through 60. Gorsegner noted that one woman shaved her head completely bald and a little girl allowed her ponytail to be cut off.

Gorsegner, who has had waist-length hair for most of her life, fought an initial nervousness at having her head completely shaved, (see below). Her daughter Natalie, who will be eight in September and who has been cancer free since November 2014, shaved her mother’s head. Daughter Hannah,

who shaved her head for the fourth year in a row, held her mother’s hand during the shave. “All I could think about during the shaving were the thousands of kids currently in treatment who have NO choice in losing their hair. How, not only do they lose the hair on the top of their heads, but they lose their eyebrows and eyelashes as well. For me I come out of this looking as if I have a trendy haircut, for these kids it’s the complete opposite, it’s traumatic and it’s lonely. There is nothing that is brave about what I did. For me it was about raising awareness and money for pediatric cancer research. These kids are the brave ones and quite honestly, most of them probably wish that they didn’t have to be so brave to begin with,” said Gorsegner. The idea for this event came from John Waltz, 1st Lieutenant Community Fire Company Station 4 and Ryan Clarke, Deputy Chief Middletown Township Fire Department noted Gorsegner. They felt it was a means of raising money for Infinite Love and honoring six-year-old Mia McCaffrey, who starred in the video “Fighter” filmed last year at the Leonardo Fire House. Both firefighters appeared in the video. Young Mia passed away this past March 17 from parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma. “Every year Infinite Love chooses a different form of childhood cancer to focus our fundraising on, and for 2017 our goal is to raise $200,000 for parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma research in Mia’s name,” said Gorsegner. The song “Fighter” was written and performed by Taylor Tote along with Natalie Grace and Hannah Rose Gorsegner. Taylor Tote, who has become a close family friend of the Gorsegners, stopped in at the event to cheer everyone on. “I am so thankful to Ryan and John for approaching me about this shave, to the entire Middletown Fire Department for embracing our Foundation and the children that we fight for, and of course to the little girl, Mia McCaffrey (forever six-years-old), who inspired it all,” said Gorsegner. Some father/daughter memories contain flowers, candy and possibly a dance, but for one dynamic duo the experience in question stretched over 300 miles and included climbs of over 2900 ft. - this was the case for David Rampulla and his 13-year old daughter, Isobel. With three beautiful daughters, 16, 13 and 9, parents Teresa and David try to spend as much one on one time with each child as possible. They decided when each daughter is 16, Teresa would take them on a journey to experience their heritage, while at the age of 13, David would choose an experience/ adventure that promised to be out of their 13-year old’s comfort zone. It all started 27 years ago with David’s own adventure. He always loved the outdoors, bike riding, fresh air and adventure. Through a family member who studied in Iowa, he found RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, RAGBRAI is a sevenday, 400 to 500 mile ride that annually stretches in different routes across Iowa from the Missouri River to the Mighty Mississippi. The ride begins by ceremoniously dunking your rear tire in the Missouri River, then hundreds of miles later dunking your front tire in the Mississippi. Now in its 44th year, RAGBRAI is attended by over 15,000 riders coming to Iowa from across the Globe and is the world’s largest bicycle tour.

As David rode 472 miles on his own personal quest in 1990, he imagined a day in which he would share the experience with one of his children and venture out on a physical and spiritual adventure - in 2017, he fulfilled that dream. “When I told Isobel about RAGBRAI, she immediately said “yes”, I’m not sure if she was aware of the physically demanding nature of the ride, but she has always had the heart of a lion. Once she said yes I was confident she would be up to the challenge,” said David. Each town in the bike tour is unique as a snowflake. The Iowans are proud of their heritage and are proud to share it with the guests of RAGBRAI. In some towns children lined the road with homemade motivational lawn signs thanking riders for their visit, while along the route whole families sat alongside the road to say “good morning,” or ask “where’re you from” to each of the thousands of riders who visit their special part of paradise. Of the over 50 towns they rode through, Clear Lake, Iowa brought a reunion of the Bob Marley’s Wailers, while in Castalia they enjoyed the talent of the Wissmann’s 13 siblings who played the most melodic folk music they’ve heard since watching the Cohen Brother’s movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou’. When they weren’t hugging piglets, enjoying pro-wrestling, eating church dinners, sampling homemade pie, meeting Miss Iowa or tubing the Charles River - they enjoyed local food specialties, such as pork chops smoked over corn cobs by Iowa’s own Mr. Pork Chop who followed the tour every day in a hand painted pink school bus. “Besides a lot of bike riding, I didn’t know what to expect,” said 13-year old Isobel Rampulla. “I had no idea Iowa had so many steep hills, although it was challenging, being there with my dad made the challenge worth it.” When asked how she felt after riding over 300+ miles, her reply was “proud”. “I met people throughout Iowa and from all parts of the world, it was amazing how different life in Iowa is from New Jersey. Some towns only had a grain silo, grocery co-op and gas station. Some were as small as ten people. Even the big towns were small by our standards.” When asked in hindsight what he thought of the ride, David said, “My first day coming home from work after the trip my daughter went out of her way to give me a hug as I came in the door. I would have ridden a thousand miles for that.”

THE RUN FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T… YET Colts Neck Siblings Raise Funds for Central Jersey Spinal Cord Association for Those Who Can’t” each summer.

Nine years ago, when Samantha Hoagland of Colts Neck was about to turn 11, she decided to give up her birthday party and instead celebrate the day by holding a 5K Fun Run to raise money for the Central Jersey Spinal Cord Association (CJSCA), a non-profit organization started by her uncle and godfather, Kevin Hoagland. Kevin is a quadriplegic who injured his spinal cord almost 40 years ago. He started CJSCA over 30 years ago to raise money for spinal cord research and to provide financial assistance to people with spinal cord injuries in central New Jersey, in the process raising over $2 million through his all-volunteer organization. Samantha invited family and friends to run, walk or bike with her, and contribute what they could in lieu of birthday presents. The first run was a great success and Samantha’s siblings Kayleigh, Jack, Liam and Quinn joined the effort the following year. Together, for the next four years they organized a “Run

After a few years off, 12-year-old Quinn pushed to restart the effort. She designed new t-shirts and re-named the run, “Run for Those Who Can’t…Yet”, a nod to the advancing research that she hopes will result in a cure for paralysis. On August 18, 2017 - under threatening skies at Five Points Park in Colts Neck, Quinn and her siblings were joined by over 40 other runners, many of them from the defending state champion Colts Neck High School Cross Country teams, and a handful of walkers as well, all clad in purple t-shirts with Quinn’s new logo. They outpaced the thunder and lightning, and finished before the downpour. In the process they helped raise almost $1,000 for the CJSCA.

Community Magazine learned there is a lot more to the company than just great service. First there is the interesting career path Doug Brown has followed. His gentle demeanor and unusual introduction caught my attention. “Even though I always accompanied my dad on calls when I was little, I ended up going to art school and becoming a part-time pastor before turning my focus on Brown’s in 2006.” Doug graduated from seminary in New Brunswick and is an ordained minister for the United Church of Christ in Asbury Park, where he serves part time at the Asbury Park Community Church. His main career focus is at Brown’s, but his philosophical and artistic outlets are expressed through a combination of his love of art and study of world religions. Doug described that he “thinks below the surface” and he has been digging deep into ways to understand and deal with recent world and local events. Doug shared, “I was struggling with, ‘How do I personally process this and still get through it whole and complete and healthy, without taking hate, or anger, or revenge with me?’” He became inspired to create a series of paintings using acrylic mixed media. “In this series I am focusing on world religions and discovering how humanity and the human condition are depicted, and how is it sacred and how is it human, all at the same time.” He is hoping to exhibit the series in local venues next year. Knowing this background, Brown’s mission makes perfect sense. Doug explained, “Our mission was, and always will be, to treat our customers like friends and our employees like family (not the crazy family).” This tradition started in 1977 when “Brownie” and Joyce Brown, Doug’s parents, started the company with one truck, one phone and the den as headquarters. “Because of this (mission), we have a dedicated staff of 30 employees and have clients who have been with Brown’s for 40 years. These are the kinds, of customers that have been around

since the days my dad would fix their oven, then sit down at their kitchen table with a cup of coffee, some cake and chat.” A turning point came in 2002 when Brownie and Joyce Brown both passed away. Colts Neck resident Carolyn Brown, Doug’s sister, had been working in the family business since the early 1980s and since has become the president of the company. Doug joined in 2006 to assist Carolyn. Not surprisingly, he most enjoys building relationships with the customers. Their sister Linda, also a Colts Neck resident, is a nurse and is not directly involved in the company.

From its inception, Brown’s always made a promise to be committed to the local community. For over 30 years, Brown’s has supported the Officer Phil Child Safety Program for school age children. Closer to home, Brown’s supports an employee’s 17-year-old son, Logan, who battles leukemia, raising funds through the “Help Logan Kick Cancer’s Butt” event. Globally, Brown’s supports Sylvia’s Children, an organization founded by Sylvia Allen of Holmdel to support a school for orphans in Uganda, Africa teaching entrepreneurship to the students to allow the school to be selfsustaining. Carolyn sponsors five children and two are now in college in Africa. Doug traveled five summers with a group to Uganda and is deeply impressed with its accomplishments. Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America presents Venturing Leadership Award to Larry Fink & Dorothy Speers The Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America, has announced that Larry Fink of Holmdel and Dorothy Speers of Howell are the 2017 recipients of the Venturing Leadership Award. The award is presented to Venturers and Venturing Advisors who have made exceptional contributions to Venturing and who exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Larry Fink was recognized for his leadership in Monmouth Council BSA’s Venturing Program. An Eagle Scout and a recipient of the prestigious National Eagle Scout Association Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, Larry is the co-founder of Venturing Crew 10 in Holmdel. He has served as Crew Advisor since the Crew’s inception in 2010. For the past two years, he has also served as the Advisor for the Venturing Officers Association (VOA). In presenting the Venturing Leadership Award, Monmouth Council Unit Commissioner Ken Bonnell cited several of Larry’s Scouting accomplishments. Under Larry’s leadership, Crew 10 has been very active and has achieved Journey to Excellence Gold Level status. In addition to many local outings and community service projects, Larry has led four week-long high adventure treks – two hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (one summer and one winter) and two at Forestburg Scout Reservation’s Outback Program. As VOA Advisor, Larry has inspired the youth Venturing officers to lead several successful events, most recently a multiweekend, VOA-sponsored trail building community service project. More than 60 volunteers from several Venturing Crews and Scout Troops contributed more than 225 hours to clear a new half-mile trail segment to be added to the Ramanessin Brook Greenway trail system in Holmdel. Mr. Bonnell remarked that “Larry connects with his community and, as a former Mayor of Holmdel, is deeply rooted and committed to service.” During the past 25 years, Larry has served as Chairman of the Holmdel Environmental Commission and Open Space Advisory Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Monmouth County Environmental Council, Planning Board member, four-term Township Committeeman, and Mayor. As the leading co-founder of Holmdel’s Ramanessin Brook Greenway trail system, Larry has led numerous public greenway walks, organized trail projects for the National Honor Society, Boy and Girl Scouts, and mentored several Eagle Scout candidates. Dorothy Speers, a resident of Howell Township, is the President of both Venturing Crew 85 in Morganville and the Venturing Officers Association (VOA), an organization that

Over the past two years, Dorothy has participated enthusiastically and led or co-led several Venturing/Scouting events, including Earth Day Greenway Walks and Venturing displays at the Earth Day Festivals at Bayonet Farm in Holmdel, a VOA-sponsored ice skating outing, VOA trail building sessions helping to expand the Ramanessin Brook Greenway trail network in Holmdel. In addition, Dorothy prepared and delivered presentations to promote Venturing at meetings of the NJ Sierra Club and the Monmouth Council Board of Directors. She completed leadership training at the full-day Northeast Region Area 5 2017 Journey to Excellence Conference. Dorothy is an accomplished musician and June 2017 graduate of Freehold High School where she was an active member of the marching band. She is a competitive target shooter and enjoys comics. In presenting the Venturing Leadership Award, VOA Advisor Larry Fink noted, “Dorothy is proud to be a Venturer. OceanFirst Foundation recently awarded the Monmouth Museum an Arts and Cultural Grant Award of $2,500 to sponsor the Green Arts Studio Arts Education Program in the Museum’s Becker Children’s Wing. The Green Arts Studio fosters creativity as children discover new crafting experiences. This museum studio brings out the artist in children of all ages as they work with recycled materials to create amazing works of art. Every Wednesday a teaching artist is in the studio with the children from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Studio is also supported by the community who donate their recycled materials to the Museum. Camp Quality New Jersey to Hold “Letting Kids with Cancer Be Kids Again” Race

On Saturday, September 23, 2017 - in recognition of Children’s Cancer Awareness Month - Camp Quality New Jersey (CQNJ) will be holding its inaugural “Letting Kids with Cancer Be Kids Again” 1K fun run for kids and 5k walk/run. Audiences and artists traveled from all regions of the globe to attend the 2nd Annual Monmouth Film Festival (MFF) on an August weekend, at Red Bank’s Two River Theater. The weekend was filled with excited and passionate film lovers and filmmakers nearly tripling last year’s attendance to the inaugural festival. The 2nd Annual Festival began with an energetic weekend kick off - the 2017 Filmmaker Networking Event. The gourmet catered event consisted of local favorites and regional delights, while the eclectic atmosphere filled with a steady stream of artists, press, and filmmakers indulged in the evening. The annual Red Carpet walk began, honoring this year’s featured filmmakers, transforming Red Bank into a Hollywood Premiere! The buzz of excitement spread as cameras flashed and previews of the weekend’s quality films screened in the backdrop. Industry members mingled, answering questions and talking shop - whether the topic was talent management, directing, writing, acting, producing, etc. - all left with a renewed sense of confidence and optimism. Featured Industry giants present at the event included the New York Film Academy, Backstage, The NJ Motion Picture Commission, JMR Rentals, and FACES. The festival hosted screenings of 39 short films, five feature films, and four film trailers. The films were selected from local, national, and global communities - including Poland, South Korea, Italy, and more! Awardwinning feature films included the soon to be wide released “Lemon”directed by Janicza Bravo starring Brett Gelman, Michael Cera, Judy Greer and Nia Long; “Window Horses” directed by Ann Marie Fleming featuring Sandra Oh and Ellen Page; and “The Blood is at the Doorstep” directed by Erik Ljung, a documentary detailing the chronological events surrounding the shooting of Dontre Hamilton by a Milwaukee Police Officer. Also featured

was the New Jersey Festival Premiere of “Shooting Clerks”, the biographical drama detailing how Kevin Smith bankrolled his $27,000 first film with maxed-out credit cards and garnered career-making critical attention at the Sundance Film Festival when Clerks debuted there in 1994. The screening was accompanied by an exclusive Q&A featuring special guests, including Robert Hawk and Brian O’Halloran. Monmouth Film Festival’s mission as a non-profit organization is to promote and connect independent filmmakers of all levels and industry professionals involved in all areas of the film industry, as well as give the filmmakers and their work the respect and high-quality screening atmosphere they rightly deserve. Filmmakers traveled from Seattle, California, Florida, and Europe, and were not disappointed as the festival ensured a first class event - a stand out amongst most festivals and equal to the major events, local and abroad. The success and excitement was a cumulative overview of the Festival’s schedule - taking into account the Networking Event, Exclusive MFF Filmmaker-VIP Lounge, and screening in one state-of-the-art venue filmmakers had taken advantage of the multitude of opportunities to interact with, not only each other but the esteemed guests and professionals who made up the Industry Panel. The 90-minute Industry Film Panel, took place on August 12th on the Two River main-stage, was comprised of moderator Bryan DeNovellis (nine time Emmy nominated Anchorman), David Schoner (NJ Film Commission), Taimak (The Last Dragon), John R. Green (Executive Producer, ABC), Thomas Crowell (Entertainment Lawyer/Author), Jenna Ricker (Producer/Director, The American Side), Jeremy Profe (Director/Writer, The Lennon Report), and Jen Fineran (Film Editor/Documentarian). The discussion featured questions

- from a near capacity audience of not only eager and passionate artists but moviegoers seeking industry insight. The questions ranged from how to break into the industry and entertainment laws, to editing and how to distribute your film or series. The 2nd Annual Monmouth Film Festival concluded with the 2017 Awards Ceremony, honoring the best films in multiple categories. Special speakers and award presenters included Two River Times esteemed writer and film critic, Joan Ellis, as well as the honorable Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna - who gave an inspiring speech supporting the festival and the arts in Red Bank. Bring the family to the second annual Unbroken Warriors Touch a Truck event on September 23, 2017 and let the kids have a hands-on experience with an awesome lineup of touchable vehicles. Kids can see close up what it looks like inside vehicles such as a military convoy truck; an ambulance; Holmdel police car; a first responder utility truck; and the Sheriff’s mobile command van. They can meet the men and women who use these vehicles, ask questions, and quite possibly sit in the driver’s seat of many of the vehicles. Dearborn Market in Holmdel has once again offered the area behind their market for this exciting, childfriendly event. There will also be a free face painter and a balloon artist for the kids. Dearborn will also be selling concession items in the field. Unbroken Warriors will be selling their logo items with all the profits going to Unbroken Warriors. Several truck companies will have giveaways for the kids. There will be free construction hats for the kids while supplies last. A few games will be available for a small fee in which the kids can play to win prizes. Pinots Palette of Red Bank will have

$5 canvas painting for the kids and they will be donating all the money back to Unbroken Warriors. Drinks, ice cream, burgers, hot dogs, and snacks will be available. Dearborn Market will be open as well and coupons will be provided to truck event patrons upon entry to the event. Dearborn will also have free tractor rides throughout the day. Cost for this event is $5 per person for adults and children; infants are free. A $20 family admission will cover up to six people. WRAT radio will be set up to play continuous music and offer giveaways. Vehicles that are scheduled to be on display include a Holmdel Township Ladder Truck and Engine Truck; Monmouth County Public Works Tandem Dump Truck with Sander; and a Monmouth County “fun” bus. J.F. Kiely will have a lowboy trailer, backhoe and backhoe puller. Middletown Police Department will have a Special OPS truck, SWAT truck, and ATV on a trailer. Holmdel EMS will display an ambulance, the Chief’s truck, and an extricator. NJ Natural Gas will display a First Responder utility truck, and an International distribution truck. Solterra will have a mini packer disposal truck, full size side load waste disposal truck

and a rear loader waste disposal truck. “This event will help us help veterans regain coping skills to face life as they did before PTSD. Money raised also helps us disseminate information to other organizations in the event they encounter a veteran in crisis. All our events give us a chance to speak with the public to share what we’ve learned about the science of PTSD and share the real stories we know of from veterans concerning their ordeals with getting treatment", said Founder of Unbroken Warriors Michael Dowens. Unbroken Warriors was founded in 2016 in Holmdel, by Michael Dowens, an American combat veteran afflicted with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). MATTHEW CHANG NAMED USA SWIMMING SCHOLASTIC ALL-AMERICAN

Ranney School rising senior Matthew Chang of Holmdel has been selected for this year’s USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team. The award recognizes the nation’s top student athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom. A Ranney Varsity Swim Team member, Matthew earned this coveted distinction by achieving an individual Winter Juniors qualifying time in the 50-meter freestyle and attaining standards of academic success, including a minimum GPA of 3.5. In August, Matthew competed at the 2017 YMCA Long Course National Swim Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he qualified for seven events. He placed 9th overall in the 50-meter Freestyle with a personal best of 24.11 seconds. Matthew also placed 4th in the 200-meter medley relay and anchored for his team in the 200- and 400-meter free relays, finishing 5th and 6th overall, respectively. For the past two years, Matthew has organized a Swim Across America fundraiser on Ranney’s campus to benefit the fight against cancer. In honor of his grandmother, who battled gallbladder cancer, his efforts have raised more than $7,500 for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center research.

Colts Neck Rockfest to Celebrate 10 Years of Local Music STORY SUSAN MURPHY

Colts Neck Rockfest is back again, and this year marks its tenth anniversary. Rockfest brings together talented local musicians in a two-day musicanza! Held at Bucks Mill Park on Bucks Mill Road in Colts Neck, the event runs from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. on September 22, 2017 and from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on September 23, 2017. A bonfire will be blazing on both nights. The entry cost for Rockfest is $20 per car. Founder of the event Steve Warendorf started Colts Neck Rockfest in late August of 2008. “I had the idea to have a little free concert with a few musical acts at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. My point was always to utilize the beautiful spaces we have available in town,” said Warendorf. In 2008, the Moroccan Sheepherders, Bullet Bob and the Colts, as well as a few acoustic artists played. “It was basically a backyard barbecue held at the park with about 30 people in attendance. It’s interesting to note that this was the Moroccan Sheepherders’ very first NJ cover music gig, as we were an original act from 1996 until then,” added Warendorf, who is a member of this band.

Headlining on Friday night will be the Taylor Tote Band, well-known in the music community. Warendorf has also planned something special for Friday night. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Rockfest, there will be a competition for bands who are under 25 that he dubbed “Battle of the Young Bands Night.” Warendorf said of the idea, “We have always had young bands perform at Rockfest who are just starting out. I like to give young bands a shot and this is good exposure for them.” The winning band will get a good slot in next year’s Rockfest. Saturday’s lineup includes the Moroccan Sheepherders, who are headlining; Xol Azul; Woodfish; Secret Sound; Colossal Street Jam, and others. The music ranges from classic rock to latin to reggae to original music. Two stages will be set up and one full band will always be playing so that Warendorf can set up the stage for the next band. That means continuous music! Vendors will be selling handcrafted items as in the past. Rockfest sweatshirts will also be available for sale. There will be a food truck from Chilango’s Mexican Restaurant; and a dessert truck from Chimney Cakes. Colts Neck Fire Company#1 will be selling hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs. There will be no grills available, but you can bring your own beverages and food. “Rockfest is a wonderful musical weekend picnic - a grownup version of a picnic, and you only pay $20 per car. Where else can you enjoy great music; hang out with friends; and at the same time help to raise funds for a charity? The

quality of music is great and the bands are from the area. In the music community, we all know each other so at Rockfest we get to hang out together and play our music. Both the patrons and the band members enjoy this event. Rockfest is all about the music and hanging out with friends,” said Warendorf. Warendorf loves music and wants everyone who attends Rockfest to relax, enjoy the music and socialize. “Rockfest is an easy-going environment. It’s an all-day picnic that is a very low-key music-centered community event. So come and enjoy the music, enjoy the food, shop a little, and be with friends. You can’t beat that!” he said. Once again, as they have for the past seven years, Sakoutis Brothers will donate a flatbed truck for the stage and a dumpster for use during the event, noted Warendorf. The Colts Neck Lions Club, along with local volunteers will assist in the parking arrangements and the cleanup. “Proceeds from Rockfest, after costs, will go to a local charity,” said Warendorf. The sound system and production for Rockfest will be handled by See Hear Tech, a residential and commercial security, audio, and video company. Sponsorships for Rockfest 2017 are available. Ten outstanding young professionals have been named 2017 recipients of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s award for Phenomenal Women Under 40, sponsored by BlueClaws Charities. Local Bodybuilder Earns Pro Designation STORY: CATHY PADILLA

This past June, Michele Zandman-Frankel, local business owner and former Colts Neck resident, moved one step closer to her dream of competing in the Olympia for bodybuilding by earning her professional ranking in Figure from the International Federation of Bodybuilding or IFBB. She can now compete internationally based on her top ranking at the NPC Universe Nationals. “This is a goal I set in 2012,” Zandman-Frankel shares. “And I finally did it! This took an incredible amount of year-round discipline. A Pro card is never simply given. I always say you don’t get what you want, you get what you’ve earned! I can now compete internationally on stage with competitors I have admired and looked up to for years. They are now my peers.” For Zandman-Frankel, this is more than just reaching a goal, it is validation for a tough choice she made in changing her life. “Prior to 2013 I was in an eightyear controlling relationship. I wasn’t allowed to follow my dreams and I practically felt owned. But I let it happen by staying. I made the decision to change my life. I walked away and started over,” Za ndma n - Fra nke l says. “I found a strength within myself I never knew was there and I have been a completely different person ever since. I am now making all my dreams a reality. I earned my way to become an IFBB Figure Pro. I started my own business that I co-own with my husband Randy, who is a huge part of my journey and story, and I get to help others achieve their health, nutrition, fitness, and physique goals. I help others find the strength within themselves that I found. And it is truly an incredible feeling to wake up every day and do what I love.” Her advice to those getting in shape, or for life in general, is to never let anyone hold you back from achieving your goals. “Don’t let fear hold you back,” Zandman-Frankel

says. “Don’t let doubt hold you back. If you truly want to achieve something, you have to go out and do whatever it takes to achieve it. Stay away from toxic people, the doubters, the haters. Surround yourself with good people. Life is short and we only have one life to live, and we are shaped by the choices we make during this life. The only way to be successful is to have a plan, and when obstacles come up, you must have the ability to modify, adapt, and get over those obstacles.” Zandman-Frankel and her husband own RevolutioniZe Nutrition in Freehold. It is a nutritional counseling business focused on helping clients drop body fat, increase muscle mass, or simply feel better. The business includes a storefront loaded with healthy snacks and a small studio and posing area for bodybuilding competitors who are clients. “We focus more on body composition shifts and transformation. I hate using the term weight loss,” Zandman-Frankel says. “We also present complimentary nutrition seminars at other gyms, police departments, and corporate businesses. I call it “The Rev House”, and we are always rockin’ at the “Rev House!”

The burden is greater and the proofs needed to sustain it are more substantial. Of course, none of this means that all removal requests are doomed to fail. They are not. And, in many cases, they will still be successful. It may just require more work and more evidence.

Get Schooled on How to Deal with Embarrassing School Scenarios I don’t think there is one parent out there who doesn’t want his or her child to be well liked, well-adjusted or well-read when heading back to school. But, most of us forget about the unexpected circumstances and social pressures that could interfere with our picture perfect portrayal of being a student. Remember the innocent pick of the nose or the embarrassing barf session in class? How about not being able to hold back those uncontrollable tears from a playground fight or being cut from a team? We’ve all had to manage the damage from our fair share of bad school days and now our children may face the same shame. That’s why it’s our parental duty to recognize these real-life “school-noyances” and teach our children how to cope with the embarrassing situations with confidence. Holmdel Brokerage Hosts Blood Drive Weichert Realtors in Holmdel hosted a blood drive with special meaning in August. The blood drive was in memory of Ava Pellicone. The Pellicones of Middletown realized the importance of donating blood years ago when their family required numerous blood transfusions after experiencing complications with birth. The transfusions saved the lives of both Gail Pellicone and her daughter Mia. Sadly, they lost their beautiful daughter Ava, but were given the gift of extra time with her due to the generosity of those who donated blood. They realized that someone, somewhere took time out of their day to donate blood and, in doing so, changed their lives. Weichert Realtor agents were onsite with free hot dogs and Ralphs Italian ice. Additionally, anyone that donated blood automatically was entered into a raffle for a flat screen tv. When seventeen-year-old Holmdel resident Cole Brown decided to stop by and donate after seeing the Central Jersey Blood Center bus, he won the flat screen (and guaranteed good karma!). The event drew 250 attendees; many of whom included previous Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) graduates who were there to support the charity that had helped them during their time of need. “One of the many things that makes Michael’s Feat so special is that we are a local charity who not only help families with seriously ill newborns, but also connect to them in a special way because we have walked in their shoes,” said Tara Cadet, Michael’s Feat Board Member and preemie parent. “This picnic reunites the many families we have helped over the years and it is amazing to see the bond that we all share and the progress our NICU graduates make with each year that passes.” Michael’s Feat was founded by Adam and Dana Puharic and named in loving memory of their newborn son, Michael Gerard Puharic, who was born on July 29, 2000 and died 83 hours later due to a chromosome disorder known as Trisomy 13. The charity is dedicated to providing comfort and easing the burden for parents carrying and caring for seriously ill newborns in Monmouth and Ocean counties. To date, Michael’s Feat has helped hundreds of families and raised over $1.5 million dollars. “This year’s picnic was held on what would have been Michael’s 17th birthday…he would have gotten his license this morning and it is hard not to be overcome with emotion during these milestones,” said Dana Puharic, founder of Michael’s Feat. “But looking around and seeing the many families we have helped gathered here today to honor and support our mission shows me the strength of Michael’s legacy and it is so heartwarming.” Michael’s Feat honored the Regan

Family of Aberdeen, with the Heather Rose Kiss Tribute of Courage Award. Megan and Dan Regan’s son Devin was born 14 weeks prematurely on December 16, 2013. He weighed only 2 pounds, 1 ounce and was 13 inches long. He was immediately put on a ventilator and brought to the Monmouth Medical Center NICU where he stayed for three months. Devin grew and thrived in every way and while doctors were pleased with his progress in the first weeks it eventually became clear that he was unable to breathe on his own and the doctors decided to have him transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for further treatment. Doctors there felt the best course of action would be for Devin to receive a tracheostomy tube and gastronomy tube so he could begin to grow and thrive. He was there for an additional four months while he got stronger and his parents learned to care for him. They were finally able to bring him home on July 8, 2014 to join his big sister Sloane. Devin is now three years old, attends preschool, communicates with sign language, eats entirely by mouth and is in the 40th percentile for height and weight. “We are so excited to see what Devin can accomplish in the next few months as he begins the process to wean him off the trach and we hope to have him decannulated within the year,” said Megan Regan. “While this journey has been understandably scary and stressful at times, it has also been extraordinary in many ways and we wouldn’t change a thing. There is a general rule that human brains absorb and recall information most effectively when presented in threes. Ask any speech writer, musician or corporate trainer to validate this notion. When concepts and ideas are chunked in buckets of three, audiences are more engaged and facts are more memorable. Tracey Wolfman RN, MA is busy leveraging the power of three and has a wide and captive audience. There is no irony lost on the fact that she’s making memorable changes in the world of deteriorating minds. Alzheimers disease causes premature senility. In 2017, 5.5 million people in the US were managing this epidemic of the aging. Every 66 seconds, another patient is diagnosed with Alzheimers and 1 in 3 seniors die of the disease. By 2050, it is estimated that 16 million people will have Alzheimers at a wearying cost of 1.1 trillion dollars. Many consider Alzheimer’s disease to be a crisis since it is the only top ten cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. Here are three ways Tracey Wolfman is helping to change that landscape: 1. She teaches nursing students at Monmouth University how to care for an aging population with a specialty in Alzheimers and dementia. 2. Tethering/Chaining Restrictions Put in Place Provided by Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Council Director | The Humane Society of the United States

In February 2016, I wrote a piece on the chaining/tethering of dogs and how this is both an animal welfare and human safety issue. In most cases, tethers are used for short stretches of time, but a small number of dog owners tether their dogs constantly or for many hours at a time. In addition to animal welfare concerns, tethering has been proven to be a high risk factor in serious dog bites and attacks. Tethering is unsafe for dogs and for the public, and it is important for advocates and officials to understand this connection, so they can incorporate tethering regulations into effective community dog management strategies. I am happy to report that New Jersey State Senators Jeff Van Drew, Jim Holzapfel, and Robert Singer recognized this as a serious issue and put forth a sweeping companion animal protection bill restricting tethering/

chaining of dogs and stipulating what proper care and shelter is for animals. Our incredibly humane New Jersey legislature agreed with this principle as did Governor Christie who recently signed the measure into law. Under the new law, it is unlawful to expose any pet or service animal to adverse weather conditions, unless the animal has continuous access to proper shelter. It also makes it unlawful to cruelly restrain a dog. In addition, the law provides that when state or local officials issue an order of evacuation due to weather or other emergency conditions, the owner must make every attempt to evacuate their pets and not leave their animals indoors or outdoors while unattended or tethered. We applaud the introduction and passage of this desperately needed measure to ensure companion animals are entitled to proper shelter and treatment while outdoors. Thanks

to our elected officials and the broad coalition of NJ animal protection advocates, our state will no longer tolerate innocent animals who deserve responsible human stewardship being left out to suffer or even die in the elements. The HSUS recommends a combination of approaches to reduce tethering. Laws that regulate and restrict tethering are incredibly helpful, but may not always be the only approach. Enforcement agencies are notoriously underfunded and limited in their bandwidth. Community-based initiatives to support dog owners and unchain dogs through positive intervention and education is also effective. Should that not work, now New Jersey law enforcement has what it needs to protect animals from irresponsible pet owners.

Wine Tasting to Raise Funds for The Linda E. Cardinale MS Center CentraState Healthcare Foundation will host its sixteenth annual multiple sclerosis fundraiser “An Evening in the Vineyards” on Friday, September 15, 2017, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CentraState’s Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, located at 901 West Main Street in Freehold. Proceeds will support the Linda E. Cardinale Multiple Sclerosis Center, now the largest and most comprehensive MS Center in New Jersey. Over 70 wines from around the world will be available, poured by the distributors of Max’s Beer Wine and Liquor along with delicious cuisine provided by The Metropolitan Café and Great Restaurants Catering, both of Freehold. In addition, guests can upgrade to the Gordon Stillwell Tasting Room, hosted by Carol Stillwell, which offers tastings of some rare and unique wines of the Napa Valley with their own food pairings. The event generally draws nearly 600 people and last year raised nearly $200,000 for the Linda E. Cardinale MS Center at CentraState. The Linda E.
