Community Magazine
Welcome NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
S
ummer is almost over, and it is bittersweet, this brings a relief that the kids are going back to school, along with disappointing goodbyes to the beach, pool and barbecues. Autumn is my most favorite time of year, the weather is just right and we all get back into the swing of things – not to mention the fall foliage, mums and pumpkins, scarecrows and spooky hay rides – Monmouth County is a gift this time of season.
Late summer and early fall are the perfect back drop for outside events. Community Magazine has provided you with all these festivals, crafters’ markets, music concerts and street fairs on page 14 - our picks for the upcoming weeks are the Colts Neck Rockfest, 9th Annual Bayonet Farm Arts & Music Festival, Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival, Dearborn Market’s Apple Festival, Colts Neck Barn Tour and Harvest Home Festival – all these events are family-friendly! This issue, we have an inspiring story on Colts Neck resident Jennifer Pellechio-Lukowiak, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, and faced her fear headon using her passion for fashion, love of music, and what she describes as “my twisted sense of humor” to battle it. Find her story on pages 60 and 61. Finally, September marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our nation. It is hard to believe it has been this long, our area lost many friends that day – we must remember those who perished, and pray for peace and healing for their families. All my best to you and yours,

spectacular highlight of the scenic drive along Seven Bridges Road is a standout home called Boxwood Manor. This sprawling 12,000 square foot estate, with its elegant design and massive front lawn set against the Shrewsbury River, has caused many a driver to slow down in awe. Few of them may realize that this remarkable home has also played a role in life as we know it in Monmouth County. America had just “charlestoned” its way through the roaring 20’s, an era known for opulence as well as a boom period for the construction of many landmarks. In 1929, when the world changed, so did this thirteen acre parcel of land, when the wealthy Chairman of the Board of Governors for the New York Stock Exchange, Charles Lovering, built this exquisite home. foresaw a time when Monmouth County would become more than a place for a summer getaway. Boxwood Manor became the visual announcement that Monmouth County would be a year round place to live. In subsequent decades, the estate’s original thirteen acres were reduced to eight, and in the mid 1950’s, Gladys and Alfred Rosenthal made it their home. Now, their grand-nephew and niece, Jerry and Cionna (Buckley) Rosenthal, their three daughters, five cats, one dog and two turtles have made Boxwood Manor their home. As the Rosenthal’s family needs have changed, they’ve decided it’s time for this empty nest to be enjoyed by a new family. The property is being handled by Louis Critelli, MBA, CRS, broker and owner of Critelli Realtors. Louis is known as premier realtor of the Shore’s most luxurious and exclusive homes and considers Boxwood Manor one of the finest around.
National Grandparents Day
Is Cause For Celebration
story Susan Murphy
N
ational Grandparents Day is celebrated on September 9 this year. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation designating the first Sunday in September after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. September was chosen for the holiday to signify the “autumn years” of the lives of grandparents. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to bring generations together to share special talents, meanings and origins of their ancestral line, and learn more about family. Today, many younger people are becoming grandparents well before those autumn years. Regardless of the age of the grandparent or grandchild, showing respect and love is not only reserved for Grandparents Day, but all year long. Grandparents from Colts Neck, Holmdel, and Lincroft shared their comments after being asked, “In what way has becoming a Grandparent changed you and your life?” Colts Neck grandparents Bruce and Donna Bennett have two grandchildren, they shared the following, “Being a Grandparent has given our life a whole new dimension, it is a completion of the cycle of Life. We both appreciate everything Ellie and Cooper do and say without the stress of parenting. It has made us very tolerant and patient. We enjoy seeing the world through their eyes and taking the time to discover with them. We LOVE IT!”
Lincroft grandparents Tom and Patti Hall have four grandchildren. They include Lucas, 5; Rory, 3; Caitlin, who will be 3 in December; and Declan, 1. Both Tom and Patti shared some honest thoughts on the “challenging” side of grandparenting as well as the enjoyment it brings. Patti said, “You are much more patient than the first time around, yet sometimes we can’t understand how we did it ourselves due to the demands. One of our joys is spending money on clothes and toys for them.” Tom added, “Sometimes we are both exhausted caring for our grandchildren, especially the ones that crawl and are just getting their “sea legs.” And, we definitely sympathize with young parents today, particularly with both spouses working. Day care is now a way of life for some young people. Patti and I both agree that there is something to be said about being able to spoil our grandchildren rotten - it is so enjoyable! We feel very blessed to have wonderful, successful children who have given us four special grandkids.” 10
Community Magazine
Holmdel grandmother Joan Abbato has five grandchildren. They include Eddie, 18; Christina, 16; Gabrielle, 14; Marco, 10; and Giovanna, 8. Joan shared this comment, “From the oldest to the youngest, my grandchildren have brought light to my life with their youth and excitement. They are a constant joy and source of happiness as I watch them grow, change and achieve so much through education, activities and fun times.” Holmdel grandparents Aldo and Angela Popolo have four grandchildren. They include Nicholas, 8; Nicole, 6; Raymond, 4; and Natalie, 2. Angela shared, “Being a grandparent has filled my life with so much love, joy and happiness. I enjoy playing and reading to them. I love being part of their life and watching them as they grow. Aldo said, “Being a grandparent has made me feel younger, even though my grandchildren think that I am very old. They always want me to play games and watch TV with them. The best part is when they ask me to read a story to them at bedtime, and that good night kiss.”
Lincroft grandmother Anna Piperno will be turning 80 this September. She is proud to say she has 11 grandchildren who all reside within a ten minute radius. They include Stevie, 21; Analisa, 18; Julia, 13; Micky, 12; Frankie, 10; Mikey, 10; Matteo, 9; Anthony, 8; Emily, 8; Adriana, 7; and Caroleena, 6. Anna shared this, “The feeling of being a grandmother is hard to explain but what a feeling it is to be loved by all of my grandchildren! Becoming a grandparent not only changed my life but it also changed my name. My oldest grandchild gave me the special name of Mima which is what everyone calls me now. Becoming a grandparent made me happy to see the new generation come, and it also made me realize that I’m getting older. I feel more relaxed caring for my grandchildren than I did for my own children because now I have more experience. It is a true joy. I’ve been able to relive the happy memories of the births of my four children while watching each grandchild come along. One very special memory for me was seeing four of my grandsons wear their father’s communion clothes at their baptisms. It was just like seeing my own children on their days 30 something years earlier.”
Most people don't think twice about making their hectic lives more efficient. Smart phones, music devices, tablets — any gadget or system we can use, we'll try. When it comes to home maintenance, however, many fail to notice one of the most glaring inefficiencies in their cleaning regimen — their vacuum cleaner. A built-in central vacuum system is the pinnacle of efficiency, not only saving time and energy, but also eliminating the noise, smell, and costly upkeep of portable vacuum cleaners. With a central vacuum system in place, all you have to do is plug in a central vacuum hose and get to work. It's that simple. As an added bonus, a central vacuum system is affordable and can be installed without damage in one day.

T
he Ashley Lauren Foundation in conjunction with Phi Theta Kappa, Tau Iota Chapter at Ocean County College along with the Chinery/DeVito Family, Anita DelPesce and Bob Montesano hosted the 16th Annual Scott Chinery SUMMERFEST for Children with Cancer and their families in Colts Neck. This annual event provides a “day away” for the children to forget about cancer and enjoy “just being kids.” There were 250 in attendance. The children and their families were treated to swimming, and many, many fun activities including games, rides, face painting, glamor tent, dunk tank, pony rides, petting zoo and photo booth. They strolled through the “toy room” where they picked out several of their favorite new toys to take home. They were entertained by Dikki Ellis from the Big Apple Circus, Liz from the “Sunny Side Up Show” on the PBS Sprout Channel and Cowboy Larry and Brave Beth. The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department, the NJ State Police, Colts Neck Fire Department, Monkey Business, Rolling Video Van and Middletown Arts Center were on hand with fun things for the children. Two helicopters landed and the children had the opportunity to sit inside the choppers. The Batmobile was on display along with a visit from Batman, Buster from The BlueClaws and Hopscotch from Meridian Health Center.
Tommy and Yvette Bonfiglio of Tommy’s Coal Fired Pizza, will be honored at The Ashley Lauren Foundation’s Butterfly Ball in early 2013. 12

Ten Cool Fall Classes 1. PreK Chefs Le Petit Chefs, Shrewsbury www.lepetitchefkids.com
Kids love to cook and they’ll have a lip smackin’ good time in this class that mixes cooking with stories and games. Geared toward pint-sized chefs, your kiddos will learn well beyond the basics. Teachers salt and pepper the class with nutrition (healthy eating check!), measuring (a little extra math never hurts), table setting (we could all use some help around the house), and etiquette (that alone is worth enrolling). Only six kiddie cooks to a class, and the whole fam will enjoy the samples and recipes that make their way home.
2. Tot Rock Little Rockers, Red Bank www.littlerockersmusic.com
Eddie Van Halen look out! These rockin’ tots mean business. And the moms and dads can be pretty serious too. Prepare to rock out with your mini musicians in this parent and tot class to kids faves and tunes that both mom and dad will know well. Go ahead and sing along or shake an egg to some of the classics, including Kindie Rock.
3. Dash ‘n’ Splash YMCA, Red Bank www.cymca.org

Forty five minutes of fun and games, followed by a 30 minute cool down in the pool. (And perhaps a snooze in the car ride home.)
4. Bitty Bouncers Elite Trampoline, Middletown
www.elitetrampolineacademy.com

This tramp class for three to five year olds introduces strength building, balance, trampoline skills and fun all in one. And if the kids are lucky, they can sneak a peek or even meet a 2012 Olympian. Steven Gluckstein, who represented the USA at the 2012 Olympics in

olts Neck Martial Arts (CNMA) is committed to helping children, teens, and adults improve their physical and mental health. Through the training of martial arts, they can learn how to build strength, flexibility, and stamina. Self-esteem and self-control, as well as pride, will improve. Classes held at CNMA are designed to allow members to train at their own pace, while allowing advanced students the opportunity to challenge themselves. There are five different classes available. The classes for children are Tiny Tigers for ages three to four; Lil Dragons for ages four to six; and Basic Kids for ages seven to 13. Teens and adults will benefit from the Fitness Kickboxing classes. Adults Krav Maga/Self Defense class (16 plus) is also popular. According to the CNMA website, Krav Maga is a self-defense system based on principals that are used by elite commando units and swat forces. The system can be learned quickly and applied under stressful situations.

CNMA offers both group and private classes. Great results have been attained by members attending classes one to three times a week. With the combination of cardio, resistance training and proper diet members are seeing their bodies become toned. Nutrition tips are given during class but personal appointments with an instructor can be scheduled to discuss specific nutritional questions. If they prefer, young children, teens and adults can schedule an appointment for personal training by CNMA instructors.
Also available are special needs karate classes for ages five and up, which help to improve focus, control and develop a positive attitude. The CNMA website states that each class is designed to build confidence, and includes stretching, basic karate, fun games, and focus drills. These classes are offered twice a week at the main CNMA academy in Morganville. For more information on the special needs classes, visit www.facebook.com/specialneedskarate. CNMA owner and instructor is Deshi “MJ” Singh, who started basic classes with five children in November 2011. “I have been teaching Martial Arts full time for over 10 years. I majored in Economics and Psychology at Rutgers and graduated from there in 2009,” he explained. In every class, Deshi not only trains students in various self-defense moves, he also upholds the importance of respect – to him, to their fellow students, and to themselves. Lessons about going the extra mile at home and in class are filtered between practicing how to side kick the padded cushion held by Deshi. He offers a smile and encouragement to students doing their best, or a serious expression and stern words for the student not focusing on the task at hand. He has an amazing repertoire with even the smallest/youngest student, and gently but firmly guides them to where they need to be at any given moment. “We have received good feedback from Colts Neck parents and their children,” he notes. The main focus of CNMA is to build children’s confidence. “Our students are learning better focus and respect and in turn have better grades and better behavior at home,” he added. CNMA offers fun and educational Birthday Parties that include a 30-minute karate class, fun games, and surprises. A one-on-one free evaluation class is also offered to potential members during which they meet with an instructor and discuss what would be the best class to take. CNMA is also offering a special Back to School package that includes six weeks of unlimited classes for $149, noted Deshi. CNMA is located in the Team Life, Inc. building at 291 Route 34 in Colts Neck. They can be reached at 732.570.8982 or by sending an email to deshimj@gmail.com.

The Center for Wound Healing at Bayshore Community Hospital yielded scores of 97 percent patient satisfaction, 96 percent healing rate, and an average stay of 28 days. “The entire team is very proud to receive this award,” says Asaad H. Correcting Arthritis
O
steoarthritis, or better defined by the American Medical Association as Degenerative Joint Disease, is a mechanical breakdown of the structural and functional components (muscles/joints) of your body. The muscles and joints stop working correctly, therefore they degenerate or breakdown. It can affect any joint in your body, but is most prevalent in your spine, knees, hips and shoulders. Your brain and nervous system controls the structure and function of your body. Nothing in your body works independently of your brain and nervous system. The brain/nervous system controls: - Your muscles which - Move your joints which - Move your body When proper structure and function of your body are maintained: - your body properly stimulates your brain - properly stimulating your muscles - properly stimulating and moving your joints When this system stays healthy and intact, your muscle/joint health are maintained and will last forever. As gravity affects your body—as well as injuries from falls, accidents and sports occur—your body starts to improperly stimulate your brain which improperly stimulates your muscles causing dysfunctional joint motion leading to arthritis- Degenerative Joint Disease. In rehabilitation of Degenerative Joint Disease, this is the single most important piece to the puzzle needed to correct and eliminate progression of arthritis. This information was provided by Dr. Tom Gustafson of Active Healing Center in Colts Neck. To be evaluated and to determine if you are a candidate for their program, please contact the Active Healing Center at 732.683.0200 to schedule your appointment.

Divorce Talk: Alimony the marriage or civil union, the age, physical and emotional health of the parties and the standard of living established in the marriage or civil union. Permanent alimony is the oldest type of alimony and the one most associated with long term, more traditional marriages where one spouse is the sole or primary breadwinner and the other is largely or completely economically dependent.
B
elieve it or not, there are now four types of alimony in New Jersey – permanent, rehabilitative, limited duration and reimbursement alimony. Each is intended to address a different factual context, but all require the court to consider thirteen specific factors. By considering thirteen factors, a court will decide whether any alimony at all is appropriate and, if it is, what type and how much should be awarded. Among the factors are: the actual need and ability of the parties to pay, the duration of
Permanent alimony, however, is not necessarily permanent. Circumstances may change in the future that may cause a modification, or even a termination of alimony. For example, the remarriage of the spouse receiving alimony will terminate alimony, as will the death of either. Retirement, disability, or unemployment may result in a modification or termination of alimony, depending on the particular facts in each case. Rehabilitative alimony is designed to assist the economically dependent spouse while he or she becomes more financially produc-
Provided By Peter C. Paras, Esq.
tive. In other words, some economically dependent spouses may need retraining, additional course work or simply some time in the job market to rekindle skills and to reestablish an earning capacity they once had. Limited duration alimony generally applies in situations where there is a significant disparity in work history and earning potential (as in permanent alimony situations), but where the marriage is of relatively short duration and/or the spouses are relatively young. In those circumstances a court may conclude that it would be inequitable to require the payor to pay permanent alimony for a period that may be significantly longer than the marriage lasted or to a relatively young ex-spouse who has a greater opportunity to start anew than one who has been married for most of his or her adult life. Reimbursement alimony is best explained by the facts in the cases from which it was born in the early 1980s. The cases involved young
couples in short term marriages who had agreed that the Husband would continue his education, while the Wife deferred her educational plans to work and support the couple. When the Husband finished his education, he was to work so the Wife could complete her education. In each instance the marriage broke up after the Husband completed his education, but before the Wife began hers. Given the short term marriage and the relatively young ages of the spouses, courts decided that the other forms of alimony were not appropriate. Yet, a troubling inequity existed which was addressed by requiring the Husband to support the Wife while she completed her education – a socalled reimbursement. Peter C. Mary DeLeo
was honored by “Coffee for A Cause” for enthusiasm and dedication to the group
S
ince 2001, the residents from Luftman Towers and The Pavilion have gathered on Friday mornings for what they call “Coffee For A Cause”. Residents get a cup of coffee with a roll, muffin or donuts for a small donation. “Coffee for A Cause” happened by accident. When it began, it was just a social gathering for residents. It is run by a team of volunteers. Mary DeLeo and Edith Mirenda were the first to step up to the plate, getting the coffee going each week. It was not intended to be a money maker but when the nickels and dimes started to add up, so did the question, “what do we do with the money?” It was decided to give it to those in need; and so “Coffee For a Cause” was born. Now in its 12th year, Coffee For A Cause has donated over $20,000 to many charities, local organizations and folks in need. They’ve supported the Lincroft Volunteer Fire Company and First Aid Squad; the historic Clayton Thompson Cemetery project; been Santa Claus to needy families; contributed to a playground for handicapped kids; helped feed the hungry and assisted when tragedy struck. In 2002, Coffee For A Cause received the “NJ Excellence in Housing Innovative Social Service Program” award. The residents and the volunteers are proud of the difference they have made in the lives of others and their contribution to the community. For the last 12 years, Mary DeLeo has risen early on Friday to put on the coffee pot. She always has a cheery disposition and welcomes all who arrive. Mary’s daughter Paula Caprio comes to give her Mom a hand. She is also joined by fellow resident Dolores Barbuscia. In September, it will be back but without Mary DeLeo at the helm. Mary, who is 90 years young, has decided to take a lateral step. She is not stepping down; she’ll still be at the coffee, but at 9:00 a.m. instead of 7:00 a.m. Mary DeLeo was recently honored for her enthusiasm and dedication to Coffee For A Cause. She was presented with a plaque, flowers and her grandson, Daniel, made a surprise visit and performed on his mandolin. Mary asked that the June donation be sent to the American Cancer Society in memory of her sister, Edith Mirenda, who passed away in 2004. Coffee for A Cause will continue in September. Dolores Barbuscia will be joined by Theresa DiVita and Jo Dominach. Mary DeLeo will be there also, sipping her coffee and enjoying the company of her neighbors.

Kim Allen Memorial Garden
Honors Former Lincroft Elementary PTA President story Susan Murphy
W
orking side-by-side on August 17 and 18, a group of mothers helped dig, landscape, plant and mulch an area at the front of Lincroft Elementary School just below the windows of the school library. Their goal was to designate this area as the Kim Allen Memorial Garden, an honor befitting a very special mother, communityminded-volunteer, and dear friend.
Over the two-day period, 27 adults who knew Kim from the school, and 18 children, who knew her two sons Matthew and Ryan, began the transition of an area that would soon become a beautiful garden honoring this truly remarkable woman. Kim was a dedicated PTA member who served on numerous committees and the Executive Board, including serving two years as President. She started out volunteering in the library where she spent countless hours doing whatever was needed, whether it was cataloging books or painting walls. That is the reason the Memorial Garden was placed in front of the library windows. Sue Buckley, who designed the Memorial Garden shared, “Kim was such a huge part of Lincroft School. The garden will be a way 34

to show everyone’s love and support for her, and also be a quiet place to reflect on her contributions to the school and community.” Sue explained the reason specific bushes, plants and flowers were chosen. “Kim always had a beautifully landscaped yard, and her large Hydrangea bushes always stood out. Since Hydrangeas are typically in full bloom during June, which is her birthday month, they became a focal point in the garden. I wanted to design a garden where people would say, ‘Kim would have loved this,’ and the other plants and flowers were chosen to reflect her inner beauty that so many of us were fortunate to know.” Michele Mingino, a close friend of Kim’s shared, “It’s an unbelievable understatement to say those who never had an opportunity to know Kim really missed out. She was one of those people who had the ability to make others feel special and appreciated. Our relationship started when I worked on the PTA executive board and she was president, I was treasurer. She had boys and I had girls and our kids were in different grades so we rarely crossed paths before then. Kim was
the voice of reason, always practical and fair. I always admired her ability to be politically correct, to handle situations diplomatically. Our working relationship soon turned into a close friendship. Kim was a great friend. Sometimes we laughed until we cried. She was the friend who would come wait with me for furniture to be delivered, or to go to the dreaded doctors appointment and hold your hand, or just send you that quick “hi” text. Before Kim became PTA president, she was the chairperson for the school library. This was an important job that eventually led to her stepping up and becoming PTA president. Outside of the library seemed like a natural place to honor Kim’s memory. The Kim Allen Memorial Garden will be a beautiful constant reminder of Kim’s dedication and contribution to the Lincroft community.” Jackie Totilo, another close friend of Kim’s noted that her entire family has been very supportive of the Memorial Garden. “This really was a community project from the very beginning. We had Kim’s lifelong
girlfriend come help us who knew her since elementary school, as well as a couple who knew her from high school. And the children who came by to help were unbelievable. Some of them worked all day Friday and then returned early on Saturday to continue with the project. Kim was all about the kids, not only hers but everyone else’s kids. She did so much for the school, the kids, and the community, yet it was the little things she did along the way that are so memorable.” The Kim Allen Memorial Garden will serve as a reminder of Kim’s unrelenting service to the Lincroft community especially the Lincroft Elementary School. The people who helped to design and physically create the Memorial Garden felt it was the best way to preserve Kim Allen’s memory. A dedication of the Kim Allen Memorial Garden will take place near the end of September. A date was not available at the time this story was written.

CRACKED OLIVE MARKET STORY SUSAN MURPHY
O
wners Dan Duffy and Chef Denis O’Connor of Cracked Olive Market have been well received by the community since opening their doors this past May. In a prime location on Main Street in Holmdel, next to the Holmdel Fire Department, Cracked Olive Market is already filling a need in the community. Repeat customers come from area banks and realtors, Vonage and other local businesses, as well as contractors passing through the area. Offering a specialty Mediterranean menu as well as comfort foods everyone enjoys, their breakfast, lunch and dinner choices reflect their purpose - to offer healthy meals for busy people. Inside Cracked Olive Market, a friendly staff is waiting to take your order or to answer questions about a specific menu item. You could very well be greeted by Duffy himself, who offers a warm smile and friendly hello to everyone who enters. He believes an open atmosphere and personable staff is important. “It’s tough enough for people having to deal with day-to-day things in life. We wanted to open this up so people feel like they just came in to our house,” said Duffy, referring to the space housing Cracked Olive Market. Good conversation plus great food is a winning combination. Through the use of a cuisine of the Mediterranean region, where each country offers a unique flavor and cooking technique, Chef Denis is introducing new and healthier meals. According to the Cracked Olive Market website, he earned his culinary creden-

tials at New York Institute of Technology in Westbury, New York, and trained in many of the best kitchens in New York City. Chef Denis was selected to move to France and work with Chef David Couchaux at Café Foie, the popular upscale French bistro. It was at this time that he began to study the versatility of Mediterranean cuisine. Once he returned, Chef Denis continued to work with such famed New York chefs as Charlie Palmer, Terrance Brennan and David Bouley. “I have spent 25 plus years doing this,” said Chef Denis. Duffy, who earned his BBA degree in Marketing from James Madison University, traveled the country following graduation and settled in Southern California to work in high-end retail. For the past 15 years he continued to travel the world and enjoy the regional cuisine. In each area he visited, Duffy noted meals were made using locally grown ingredients and that dishes were seasoned with fresh herbs and spices, not the usual salt and butter. His passion for this type of cuisine matched with the culinary experience of his cousin, Chef Denis, gave way to the opening of Cracked Olive Market. Chef Denis and Duffy have been building a relationship with farmers in the area. “I use as much Jersey produce as possible,” noted Chef Denis. Cracked Olive Market also has their own line of dressings, hummus, and packaged meatballs that customers rave about. The recipe for Aunt Roe’s Meatballs, which is how they are labeled, comes from a close family friend who entrusted Chef Denis with her secret ingredients. “She would
invite our families over for Sunday gravy and these meatballs,” said Duffy. “It was an event!” said Chef Denis. Upcoming in the fall, Duffy and Chef Denis will introduce a Family Meal program that will allow families to enjoy a nutritious and well-balanced meal ready to go. You need only add the utensils and beverage! The meal will include a protein, a starch, and a vegetable. Check their website for more details on this work-in-progress. Also in the works is a plan to develop a food program for schools. It’s easy to serve healthy meals, said Chef Denis. He and Duffy are also fine-tuning their online ordering and want to be able to offer a delivery service. These new projects are a result of listening to customers’ requests. “We are trying to create a happy, friendly atmosphere and the response has been great,” said Chef Denis. Catering is available for office luncheons, school functions, or special family events. Call Cracked Olive Market and talk with their catering staff to discuss your needs.

packaged cookies that come from Brooklyn. Their olives are brought in from Queens, New York. A coffee bar is available as are cold drinks. Sauces, pasta, and oils are also available for purchase. “This is exciting for us. We want to be part of the community, to become the neighborhood place to go,” shared Chef Denis. “The community has been supportive and friendly. It’s very encouraging. People who come in want us to do well and they become repeat customers,” said Duffy. Stop in at Cracked Olive Market located at 37 Main Street in Holmdel for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and experience the taste of freshly made healthy meals. Visit the website at www.crackedolive.com to review the menu, then call 732.946.4115 to place your order, or fax it in at 732.946.8857. Cracked Olive Market is open seven days a week. Polo Club Of Colts Neck Presents
King Polo Classic 2012
story Susan Murphy
I
nternational Polo Club of Colts Neck, founded in 2009 by Simon and Lina Garber, is home to the SLS Jets Polo Team, who travel around the world playing the most challenging opponents. On August 5, over 500 guests arrived at Bucks Mill Recreation Park in Colts Neck to view an exciting polo match between the Yellow Cab team and the New Orleans Carriage Cab team. Ticket holders had the opportunity to socialize while enjoying dinner, an open bar, and a silent auction beneath the VIP tent. Entertainment for the children was also a part of the early evening event.

Simon Garber has made polo an integral part of his family. Sons Shaun, Jeffery and Tyler of the SLS Jets have grown up riding horses and learned the game of polo at an early age. Daughter Enette, youngest son Shane, and Simon’s wife Lina do not play polo but do enjoy the sport as spectators. The Garber children have come to learn the importance of sharing their good fortune to benefit others through their father’s belief that “the polo community should transcend the polo field to provide support to local, national and international charities,” as he states in the 2012 Season Program. “The Kings Polo Classic partners with charities to ensure that those less fortunate can be given a stronger fighting chance,” Garber noted. Charities that will benefit from this polo match are The Beauty Foundation, which raises funds to offset expenses insurance does not cover for those with cancer; and Vet-I-Care, which provides funds to treat and save pets in need of veterinarian care that is too expensive for their families to afford.

Representatives from Vet-I-Care were available to discuss the importance of their organization. Vet-I-Care was one of the charities who benefited from this polo match.
Two special guests arrived to lend their support to the charities benefiting from this polo match. Award winning actress and humanitarian Linda Blair, who founded a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of dogs, and the star of Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York, Ryan Serhant. Today’s polo players included Russian-born Simon Garber and his sons Shaun, Jeffrey, and Tyler; Serafin Monteverde from Argentina; Mauricio Sanchez Andre from Uruguay; and guest professionals Juan Monteverde and Gringo Colombres both from Argentina. The Bernanke Cliff Michael Pento President of Pento Portfolio Strategies
T
here is just far too much attention being paid to the so called Fiscal Cliff occurring at the end of this year. The expiration of the “Bush era” tax cuts and forced spending reductions taking place because of the Sequestration, really doesn’t amount to much more than a fiscal speed bump. In fact, less government spending is one of the pathways to prosperity; rather than becoming some make-believe economic catastrophe. And although raising tax rates isn’t an optimal solution, there could still be a small benefit if there was a resulting increase in revenue, which then served to reduce annual deficits and began to address our longterm fiscal imbalances. However, there is indeed a real fiscal cliff that the United States is racing towards. It’s the very same cliff that Europe has already dived over. That cliff is based on the collapse of our debt and dollar markets, resulting from the lost faith on the part of international investors. And that loss of faith is being greatly facilitated by our Federal Reserve. The Fed has been on an avowed inflation quest since 2008. They have sought inflation by systematically seeking to destroy the value of the dollar. By already printing trillions of dollars and now threatening to print even more, Mr. Bernanke has not only crumbled our currency but has also ruined the purchasing power of the middle class. But the worst part of the central banks’ assault on our nation is the fact that Bernanke has been a tremendous enabler of the U.S. government’s fiscal irresponsibility. He has duped our leaders into believing they can borrow an unlimited amount of money at nearly zero cost indefinitely. I wrote this ominous warning back in May of 2010: However, a temporary reprieve from significantly higher yields has been given courtesy of Europe. Investors are fleeing Greek debt and the Euro currency in favor of the U.S. dollar and our bond market. But this is a temporary phenomenon and in no way bails out America from its own fiscal transgressions. In just a few years our publically traded debt will reach nearly $15 trillion. If interest rates just rise to their historic averages, the interest on our debt (depending on the level of economic growth and tax receipts) will absorb anywhere from 30-50% of total Federal revenue. If we indeed reach that point, massive monetization of the debt may be deployed by the Fed in a vain effort to keep rates from spiraling out of control.
42
Community Magazine
Back in 2010 I calculated that U.S. publicly traded debt would become unmanageable by 2015. We are moving ever closer to fulfilling that prediction, as our publicly trade debt has just soared past $11 trillion. In fact, since the recession began in December 2007, the amount of publicly traded U.S. debt has increased by 117%! Since the Fed has managed to temporarily and artificially manipulate interest rates lower throughout that increase of debt, the government believes there is no rush to change its borrowing and spending addiction. However, there is a limit to how much a country can borrow with impunity. If you debate that point just ask the Greeks, Spanish, Portuguese, Irish and Italians. But now Boston Fed president, Eric Rosengren, has just predicted our central bank will not only cease paying interest on excess reserves, but will also commit to an open-ended form of counterfeiting. He believes QE III should be results orientated in that the Fed should obligate itself to continue to print money until the unemployment rate and nominal GDP hit their—yet to be named—specified targets. The only problem with that is boosting nominal GDP requires boosting inflation; and rising inflation serves to raise the unemployment rate, not bring it down. So there is a conflict that the Fed is completely unaware of or refuses to acknowledge. History has proven that no matter where it is tried, massive central bank intervention to control interest rates and rescue the economy increases the number of those who are unemployed. That tactic is failing miserably now in Europe and has utterly failed here in the U.S. With central banks now acting in unison to garner complete control of interest rates, the only mechanism available that will eventually force them to stop piling on more debt is the repudiation of fiat currencies that back those bonds on the part of the free market. Central banks across the globe are about to launch a coordinated effort to boost inflation. And Pento Portfolio Strategies has now nearly fully prepared our clients for a global and unprecedented attack against deflation. You would be wise to prepare accordingly. Rapid All™ Cleaning Products Boast the Smallest “Carbon Footprint” In the Industry “A clean, fresh smelling home may actually be bad for your health depending on what type of cleaning products you use.” A clean, fresh-smelling home may actually be bad for your health, depending on what type of cleaning products you use. Recent research suggests that exposure to cleaning products that contain a certain volatile organic compound (VOC) called 1,4 dicholorobenzene (1,4 DCB), can reduce lung function by 4 percent. Another study found that the use of spray household chemical cleaners could increase the risk of developing asthma by nearly 50 percent.
according to the study, which appeared in Environmental Health Perspectives. Benzene and acetone are two commonly used VOCs. The volatile organic compound known as 1,4 DCB is the chemical that gives mothballs their distinctive odor. It’s also found in room deodorizers, insecticides and in urinal blocks.
Rapid All™ multipurpose industrial and commercial cleaner is ZERO VOC, all-natural, biodegradable, ph neutral cleaner that boasts the smallest “carbon footprint” in the industry. Its blend of naturally occurring microorganisms & enzymes, combined with all-natural patented tree-based surfactant, breaks down and eliminates organic materials such as: Fats; Grease; Oil & Synthetics; Heavy Dirt; and Grime.
George Estephan, President, Non-Slip Safety Solutions NJ has introduced this unique, environmentally safe and effective industrial cleaner to our local marinas, eateries, offices and schools. Rapid All™ is strong enough to clean the exterior and interior of a boat, and gentle enough to clean the stainless steel in your kitchen. Meeting top environmental standards and certifications, this all-purpose cleaner is totally biodegradable – actually beneficial to the environment – and eliminates hazardous crossmixing of chemicals.
VOCs are found in cleaning products, paints, tobacco smoke and other household chemicals,
The study suggests that, “For people with asthma, and even those without, it’s a good idea
to avoid harsh chemicals.” Always reach for unscented eco-friendly cleaning products. Rapid All™ is 100% organic, safe, harmless to humans and animals, can be used to clean any hard surface, Marble, Granite, Ceramic, Grout, Wood, Stainless Steel, Brass, Chrome, Glass, Vinyl, Carpet, Leather, Rubber, Painted surfaces, and so much more. Kills and controls animal waste. Controls and suppresses toilet and bathroom odors. Safely degrades and detoxifies septic system waste, and is film and residue free. With a product like Rapid All™ readily available in our community, why use anything else? Byron Thomashow, MD, professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City said, Oven cleaners, spray polish, and other household cleansers -- especially those that contain bleach or ammonia -- can be very irritating. “Anything that gives off fumes can cause problems -- bathroom cleaning products, in particular.” September 2012

NOVEMBER WEEKEND TO HOST NOTED AUTHOR ANITA DIAMANT
A
n exciting weekend hosting noted author Anita Diamant is being planned by three local religious organizations. Although this is scheduled for November 2-4, 2012, it is not too early to pick up one of her books (great reading!).
is a member of Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley. She is president and founder of Mayyim Hayyim: Living Waters Community Mikveh and the Paula Brody & Family Education Center, a 21st century institution dedicated to exploring the ancient traditions of immersion.
Her most notable book “The Red Tent”, celebrating its 15th year in print, became a national best seller, and has been published in 25 countries and 20 languages. It won the 2001 Book Sense Book of the Year Award. Based on the biblical story of Dinah, “The Red Tent” speaks to all people, as it addresses the role of women, their close knit bonds, and how their lives are impacted by a patriarchal mentality. Dinah is only briefly mentioned in the Old Testament, but this novel fills in the spaces and makes for a riveting story of how this heroine’s life may have actually played out in ancient times. Truly a must read for everyone, books will be available in local libraries and are already reappearing on book club lists in libraries, synagogues and churches.
Other novels by the author include her most recent, “Day After Night,” set in 1945, telling the story of four women Holocaust survivors who meet in a British internment camp in Palestine, and befriend one another as they grapple with their new lives in a new land. “Good Harbor” and “The Last Days of Dogtown” round out her list of fiction books. She has also written a series of non-fictional books that have become standard reference guides to contemporary Jewish life. Ms. Diamant has also published articles in the Boston Globe Magazine, Parenting Magazine, Parents, Reform Judaism and Boston Magazine. She can be found online at www.jewishfamily.com, and has a most interesting blog. For more information about Ms. Diamant and her many interests and accomplishments, see www.anitadiamant.com and www.mayyimhayyim.org.

Holmdel Government Needs Balance
O
ver the past year the Holmdel Township Committee majority has set a course for Holmdel that will change the very essence of our community. Their mismanagement of our budget, willingness to allow overdevelopment on the Lucent property and lack of a long-term plan for Holmdel has placed our town on the wrong path. All residents of Holmdel, regardless of political affiliation, will lose if the Township Committee remains single-minded and narrowly focused. Solid, thoughtful governance cannot exist without constantly being challenged and kept in check. This is the foundation of a democracy. Without your vote in November, one party will control all five Township Committee seats. Everything we love about our town (excellent property values, beautiful open space, and uncrowded schools) could disappear without the balance that we would bring to the Holmdel Township Committee. With your vote this November we will work to insure accountability and thoughtful, strategic development. We will bring balance to the Township Committee; a balance of power and a balanced budget. Above all, we will fight to preserve the beauty that brought us to Holmdel in the first place.
Elect Mark Levinson and Larry Luttrell for Holmdel Township Committee on November 6th. 50

NJ “RUN FOR THE FALLEN” TO HONOR AND REMEMBER NEW JERSEY SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AIRMEN AND MARINES KILLED IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. Relay Team to Cover One Mile for Each Fallen Service Member in Run from Cape May Lighthouse to NJ Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Holmdel. In an apolitical reflection of remembrance, a team of 54+ active duty members of the military from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and other locations across the US will embark on a 168+ mile journey to honor every New Jersey service member killed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Each mile is dedicated to an individual NJ Hero and their family, and the run team will stop at each Hero Marker (each mile) to present a flag and personalized biographical card to waiting family members, friends and comrades with the goal of creating a 168+ mile memorial trail through New Jersey. “NJ Run for the Fallen” will kick off on Friday, September 28 at 8:00 a.m. at Cape May Lighthouse with a “start” ceremony for the three-day, 168+ mile run through Wildwood, Stone Harbor/Avalon, Ocean City, Somers Point, Egg Harbor, Galloway, Tuckerton, Ocean Twp., Toms River, Brick, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant, Sea Girt, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Asbury Park, Long Branch, Oceanport, Shrewsbury and Lincroft to finish at the NJ Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Holmdel on National Gold Star Family Day, Sunday, September 30, 2012. Route maps are available at http://www.njrunforthefallen.org/2012-run.html This year our Run Team will be joined in Ocean City on Friday, September 28, by members of The Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Vets. The Freedom Team are wounded service members in hand-crank wheelchairs as an integral part of our Run Team. Unlike pushrim wheelchairs, which require users to lean forward, this adaptive device is excellent for people with injuries that have resulted in amputation or paralysis. It was through the efforts of Achilles that these devices are now permitted in many marathons, including the ING New York City Marathon. More details are available at http://www.achillesinternational.org/programs/freedom-team/overview and at http://www.louieslife. org/events.html. On Sunday afternoon, as the Run enters Holmdel there will be opportunities for the public to show their support and run alongside our team for either the last 5 miles or a 2K run/walk into the PNC Arts Center to finish at the NJ Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial. For more information and to find out how to participate by joining the run, donating or volunteering, please visit the NJ Run for the Fallen website at www. njrunforthefallen.org.

For reservations, information, sponsorship opportunities, and program listings, please contact event chair, Elissa Cahill at elissacahill@gmail.com. All proceeds are committed to the preservation, protection, restoration and maintenance of Holmdel’s open spaces and beautiful places – like the Gray Star Barn. This event is sponsored by the Board of Trustees of Friends of Holmdel Open Space (FOHOS), a non-profit fundraising organization formed to assist preservation of open land in Holmdel. FOHOS continues to work with the Monmouth County Conservation Foundation, along with Holmdel Township Committee to help raise funds to purchase farmland, stream corridors, woodlands and fields that can be used for both active and passive recreation. In the past FOHOS raised monies to preserve the 416 acre property formerly known as the Chase Tract and was instrumental in acquiring the Bachstadt property in northern Holmdel. Financial contributions to FOHOS can be made payable to Friends of Holmdel Open Space, and mailed to 12 Indian Creek Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733. For more information, you can visit fohos.org. Bayonet Farm is a 230-acre estate that includes farmland, historic buildings and barns. It’s nestled amongst scenic woodlands and open meadows in Holmdel. This magnificent property was acquired by Holmdel Township in the early 1990’s through a purchase with Green Acres funding and a generous donation by a long-time resident Laura Harding. Part of the house dates back to over 200 years ago and the land titles go back to the original patent of 1677. Laura Harding purchased the farm in1936 and made major Colonial Revival renovations, converting the house into a country estate. During the renovation, she discovered a small bayonet embedded in a chimney, thus the name “Bayonet Farm.” September 2012

he Animal Healthcare Team consists of the pet owner (client), primary veterinarian and the boarded veterinary specialist. Continuing advances in the veterinary profession have generated an increase in the number of boarded specialists in the veterinary field. Access to a specialist has become even easier due to the opening of private specialty practices which employ specialists as part of their Animal Healthcare Team. As in the human field, patients whose complex medical problems require the expertise of a specialist are referred by their primary veterinarian to someone who has received extensive training in a particular discipline. Possessing the training and equipment to perform the most demanding procedures, a board certified surgeon known as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Diplomate ACVS), will be referred cases requiring advanced surgical skills and knowledge. As part of the healthcare team, the surgeon will keep the referring veterinarian and client informed of the patient’s progress throughout their specialized care. A continuity of care between the surgical specialist and primary care veterinarian ensures the best possible outcome for the patient. ACVS Diplomates have completed an approved surgical training program consisting of (at minimum) a three year surgical residency, publishing research, and passing a rigorous examination. Only upon completion of these requirements and certification as a Diplomate of the ACVS can a veterinarian be considered a veterinary surgical specialist. ACVS Diplomates are held to a higher standard and are expected to provide advanced surgical care and expertise to the animals referred to them. Some of the most common procedures performed by boarded surgeons involve: arthroscopy, thoracoscopy, reconstructive surgery, abdominal surgery, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery. One of the latest innovations in veterinary medicine also implemented by veterinary surgeons is stem cell therapy which is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat orthopedic conditions in animals such as arthritis and polyarthropathy as well as tendon injuries. If you are looking for a board certified veterinary surgeon, you can visit the American College of Veterinary Surgeons website, www.acvs.org , for a list of Diplomates in your area. The ACVS website will provide you with information regarding surgeons in your area as well as their training and background. As always, your primary veterinarian is the guardian of your pet’s medical care. Veterinary specialists work with your pet’s primary veterinarian to ensure their well being and proper care. Keep your pet healthy by visiting your “other family doctor”, your veterinarian.

About Her Journey
Through Breast Cancer story Susan Murphy
Every woman fears being diagnosed with breast cancer. Colts Neck resident Jennifer Pellechio-Lukowiak faced that fear head-on using her passion for fashion, love of music, and what she describes as “my twisted sense of humor” to battle her own breast cancer.
S
he found the lump herself. Important to remember, she had a baseline mammogram done 18 months prior. “This was really important because my doctor was able to go back and review the films, verifying that nothing had been there. He was then able to pinpoint how long it had been growing. Having the baseline films also proved that it was indeed a very fast growing tumor,” said Jennifer. Self-examination, regular mammograms, both of utmost importance! Raising her two sons Peter, 11, and Connor, 9, besides working full time in the fashion industry, Jennifer was under 40, and had no family history of the disease. She didn’t fit in with the common statistics. Diagnosed near the end of the school year, Jennifer was able to rest and recover from her surgeries while her sons were in school. She began chemotherapy just after July 4, 2007. “I was genuinely surprised by how much of my regular routine I was able to maintain. We spent a lot of time at the beach,” she recalls. She had eight chemo treatments over the course of 16 weeks. Jennifer said this is called “dosedense chemo” because treatments are scheduled very close together. “It’s aggressive, but worth it. I followed chemo with 33 treatments of radiation and then I remained on a drug called Herceptin for a year because my tumor was HER2+,” she explained.

Jennifer’s family and friends helped out by taking her sons to the beach, to a local pool to swim, fishing, or away for the weekend. This helped on the days she had chemo because she wouldn’t feel well and would need help with her sons. “My husband and I were always really open with our boys. They were incredibly understanding of what I was going through. They knew that there were days that I was not going to feel well enough to go out, but they also knew that those days were the exception rather than the rule,” emphasized Jennifer. Although she did not work in the fashion industry during her treatment, Jennifer still ran her ceramic business, Bella Terra, of which she has been the owner for 12 years. “It was Bella Terra that really helped get me through the treatments. I could escape to my basement studio any time of day and get lost in the hum of the spinning wheel, squishing the wet clay between my hands, creating and being creative. Working with clay even helped my neuropathy (painful tingling in my fingertips). The more clay I spun-the better I felt. It didn’t matter while I was sitting at the wheel that I didn’t have any hair, didn’t feel well or look like myself. I was able to create and make the pieces I was always able to make,” said Jennifer. This helped her maintain a positive attitude.
And how did Jennifer use her “passion for fashion” and humor? “When I attended school or sports functions I wore funky hats or bright scarves to cover my head and I always had to have make-up on. Even if I felt a little blah I always had a tube of lip gloss in my purse. I wore mascara everyday, even when I only had three eyelashes clinging on for dear life,” she said. Jennifer always ‘dressed cute for chemo’ by wearing cute tops or bright pink flip-flops. “It helped me hang on to the pre-cancer Jenn,” she explained. Two thoughts, which at times became mantras, helped Jennifer get through her treatments. One is from the old Saturday Night Live character Fernando, played by Billy Crystal. “He would always say, ‘It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel good as long as you look good-and you look maaahhhvelous!’ This one kept me going, made me laugh and reminded me that I was so much more than a patient. The second one I repeated constantly was one that I learned in yoga. ‘You can do anything for one minute.’ No matter how tough a treatment or a blood test or surgery was, I reminded myself that I could do anything for a minute, and minute by minute I would get well and get stronger and get through what ever challenge I was facing.”
I really craved on a chemo week; plus the chicken is bald, so it was kind of appropriate - and a little silly.” Jennifer is often asked to speak at cancer centers. “Telling my story and writing my book has really helped me heal and move forward. The people that I have met, the stories they have shared with me have really been a wonderful learning experience. When I was diagnosed, I had absolutely no resources my own age. I had to go through everything on my own. They say cancer is a lonely disease because even if you have a great support system (which I did) ultimately you are the one going to the doctor, getting sick, and losing your hair, not your friends, not your family. Several people that have read my book told me that I really captured what it was like for a young person to have to stop their lives and become a patient. Others have told me that they now have a better understanding of what their sister, mother, wife or best friend is going through, what they might not be telling them about the treatment, and what they may be keeping to themselves. To know that I helped just one person get through treatment, figure out how to tell their kids, or know what questions to ask their doctors is huge. Ultimately, I wrote the book that I needed to read.”
Today, Jennifer is cancer-free. She was diagnosed Currently, Jennifer is a Colorist for Macy’s in May, 2007 and was treated until September, 2008. Merchandising Group in Manhattan. She lives After four years of continuous writing and journaling in Colts Neck, New Jersey with her husband Pete, about her journey through breast cancer, she has their sons Peter and Connor, and their dog Sierra. written a book. “Does This Outfit Make Me Look Jennifer will be at the Monmouth County Library in Bald? ver 200 years ago, MonCelebrating mouth County was a farm YEARS of LAND CONSERVATION community whose entire population could be seated in the present day PNC Arts Center. Those intrepid ancestors could not begin to imagine that their rural community would become one of the most rapidly urbanizing areas in the U.S. In 1977, MONMOUTH CONSERVATION FOUNDATION Judith Stanley Coleman and a group of visionaries recognized that this escalation of residential and industrial land use threatened to permanently alter the unique beauty and character of the area. They founded the Monmouth Conservation Foundation to protect the spectacular open space, natural resources and the integrity of the county. On the evening of September 22, the MCF will celebrate the 35th anniversary of this vital mission with a dinner dance themed “Art in Nature & Nature in Art”, at Fairway Farm, Middletown.

The event theme “Art in Nature & Nature in Art” addresses the dynamic synergy of art and nature and serves as a tribute to 2012 honorees Joan and Robert Rechnitz. Dr. Rechnitz is a longstanding member of the MCF Advisory Council and founder, along with Joan, of The Two River Theater. “Monmouth Conservation Foundation allows our community to share and celebrate the art in nature, just as we share the art of theater in the outstanding productions at the Two River Theater,” commented MCF Executive Director William Kastning. “Joan and Robert are true champions of the arts, nature and land conservation and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to salute their ongoing determination to enrich our community.” The only countywide land trust, Monmouth Conservation Foundation has protected over 6,500 acres of land to date, from the 225 acres of Huber Woods and the 456 acre MarluTwitchell Tract to the Spellman Estate with 3 acres and the pending close of Flemer Entities (formerly Princeton Nurseries) comprised of 1,200 acres – representing the largest acquisition of land by MCF since its founding. Reflecting on the establishment of MCF 35 years ago, Mr. Kastning said, “MCF’s pending acquisition of Flemer Entities epitomizes the foundation’s overarching mission to protect open space throughout Monmouth County. This particular acquisition will represent a truly remarkable achievement of simultaneously preserving farmland, wetland, species habitat, and woodland by protecting all our natural resources while also providing parkland for all. It is exactly what the founders of MCF intended.” September 2012

Third Annual
Walk The Walk
With Kevin Kret story Susan Murphy
T
hree years ago, Middletown resident Kevin Kret, 22, was in a skateboarding accident which left him in a coma. He was not wearing his helmet. As a result of both, Kevin’s family has received continuous emotional and monetary support from family, friends, and neighbors, as well as many people who never met Kevin. As a result of Kevin not wearing his helmet, a campaign known as Helmets 4 Life was started and has partnered with Instinct Skateboard to bring the message of helmet safety to schools.
Another facet of the support shown to the Kret family is “Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret,” which brings the community together and raises funds to benefit Kevin’s treatment with a 501 (c) 3 corporation, International Brain Research Foundation (IBRF). The third annual “Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret” was held on August 7 at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) in Lincroft. Over 520 participants joined the Kret family as they pushed Kevin around the CBA track three times. Parents wheeled their toddlers in strollers, friends walked their leashed dogs, and students of all ages from local schools gathered in groups to walk the track. Red Bank Catholic Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleaders turned out in full force with their coaches Kelly Supp and Jennifer Mondello. Students from Saint John Vianney High School, Saint Leo the Great School, as well as students and fellow classmates of Kevin’s from CBA and Villanova University arrived to participate in the walk. This year, Dr. Philip A. De Fina, founder of IBRF, brought several members of the team that have been working closely with Kevin. They, in turn, brought an infrared helmet and stand-up wheelchair to explain and demonstrate how Kevin has advanced in his treatment through the use of this 66

technology. The standing wheelchair is one of the next items that Joan and Mike Kret hope to get for their son Kevin. Dr. De Fina addressed the crowd, “It is wonderful to see this many people come out to support Kevin and his family. The love and care that this family gives Kevin is amazing. He is definitely on a course of recovery,” said Dr. De Fina. Both of Kevin’s parents spoke, thanking sponsors and the community for their outpouring of love and support. “Kevin’s brain waves are starting to get into the right state. He can hear us and reacts to taste, smell, and touch,” shared his father. Kevin’s mother thanked her other children Dylan, Megan, and Jennifer for their understanding, her husband Mike for his vision and unrelenting presence, and Lisa and Nicole for organizing the event. “I want to thank you Kevin for you are our hero, and I strive to be like you some day,” she said to her son with deep emotion in her voice. The entire Ardito family assisted in various phases of the event. Lisa and Nicole were the co-organizers, David, Jr., served as DJ, and David, Sr., helped wherever needed. “Our sons went to grammar school and high school together,” said Lisa. “We know the Kret family well and wanted to do this for them and for Kevin.” Nicole explained, “This year our theme was ‘We Still Believe’ and Kevin’s journey has been nothing less than amazing!” For more information about Helmets 4 Life visit www.Helmets4Life.org. For online credit card donations that will allow the technological and scientific treatment Kevin is now receiving to continue, please go to http://www.ibrfinc.org/support.htm. Please be sure to put “Kret Walk” in the comment box.

Thanks to those esteemed colleagues within Ranney’s College Guidance Office, students are able to successfully find their perfect match college or university, making a seemingly daunting 21st century college admissions process — a transition from one’s “home” to the post-secondary school of his or her choice — both smooth and enriching. Like Dr. Goldberg, the members of Ranney’s College Guidance Office demonstrate sustained leadership, all the while paving the way for students to reach their full potential within and beyond the walls of Ranney.

Whether planning parent programs and forums for nationally acclaimed guest speakers, contributing to a College Office magazine known as The Beacon, pulling together the school’s college admissions manual, or presenting and publishing work at a regional and national level — just as Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson recently did in The New York Times this past May — this team has unquestionably advanced Ranney’s mission-promise aimed at touching the lives of hundreds of graduates one student at a time. The College Office at Ranney School works closely with all students, parents, teachers and advisors, to learn those special qualities that make each child unique, and uniquely successful. Using knowledge, vision, honor as their compass, Ms. Simpson, along with Guidance Counselors Adam Materasso and Joseph Tweed, and the rest of the College Guidance Office, understand their role in guiding students through the admissions process, offering programs, calendar planning, financial planning and overall emotional support to families as they work to transition their children from home to college life. “Through it all, they are humble in nature — they are the first to sing the praises of our students and teachers, and quick to share the spotlight,” said Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. at this year’s Faculty and Staff Honors Celebration. Also, congratulations to Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson, who is now President Elect of the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling (NJACAC) and is a Cabinet member for the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS).

ST. MARY’S YOUTH MINISTRY TAKE PILGRIMAGE TO QUEBEC
S
ixty one years ago, a miracle occurred at Ste. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec, Canada. Mary Varick, suffering with bone cancer, visited the shrine with her husband and brother, and was cured. Mary was stricken with Polio as a child and was already confined to a wheel chair. Her cancer, however, would have prevented her from raising her young family. Mary was blessed with one of many documented miracles at the Shrine. In thanksgiving for her cure, she vowed to return to the shrine each year with a group of “God’s Inner Circle” (other’s with disabilities). She called this group “The First Saturday Family.” She continued this journey until 1989, when she passed away. Her family continues to make this journey each year with young and old, both able bodied and disabled. Members of St. Mary’s Youth Ministry in Colts Neck, attended those who needed assistance to make the journey. The trip has been a source of spiritual renewal and helped forge very unlikely friendships. The group visited St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, Ste. Anne de Beaupre and St. Joachim’s in Quebec, and Cap du la Madeline in Trois Riviers. This week-long pilgrimage was filled with opportunity for Masses, Stations of the Cross, tours of basilicas and even a visit to the Old City of Quebec. To find out more information about The First Saturday Family, to make a donation, or to attend the 2013 Pilgrimage, please contact Maryanne Adriance at 973.214.4734.

BBBSMMC TO HOLD
14th ANNUAL MATCHING SMILES GALA
Jewels and Jeans Theme Will Highlight Fundraiser in October
B
ig Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC) will hold its 14th Annual Matching Smiles Gala on Friday, October 19, 2012 at Addison Park in Aberdeen.
The evening will begin with a sumptuous cocktail reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing. A live auction will feature the opportunity to “Sponsor-A-Match” where attendees can pledge the cost of bringing a child together with a caring, adult mentor and for professional supervision of the match for the first year. This year, we will honor Suzanne & Jeffrey Citron and The Charles Lafitte Foundation for their many contributions to BBBSMMC and our community. In addition, there will be “Bigs” and “Littles” in attendance to greet guests and to give testimonials about how the mentoring relationship has changed their lives for the better. The 14th Annual Matching Smiles Gala is the signature event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties. “This is our largest event of the year and raises much needed funds to support BBBSMMC’s one-to-one mentoring program for children who need a positive role model in their life” said William Salcedo, Executive Director. “Our guests will enjoy a wonderful evening and have the satisfaction of knowing that their generosity will improve the lives of children in their community.” This year’s exceptional Gala Committee includes Gala Chair Stella Price and committee members Lauren Cesario, Amy Beth Dambeck, Kristin Gaul-Spitale, Christine Higgins, Debra Littleson, MC Mayer, Theresa Murphy, Dana Perrotta, Anne Roslin, Joanna Shearer, Tara Walsh, and Carol Anne Cawley Weshnak. Individual Gala tickets may be purchased for $250 with sponsorship and ad journal opportunities beginning at $500.
