Newcomers & Neighbors Club Autumn Schedule
Welcome NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
O
ctober is here and we’re happy it’s fall – scarecrows abound, a pumpkin patch, apple bobbing, kiddies (and adults) on hayrides and much more! Our area has some of the best autumn scenes, and the fall foliage is magnificent, so take in the crisp air and apple cider and enjoy the many ‘cool’ outdoor activities with the family. This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this is when public service groups, medical professionals, government agencies and others work to promote awareness of the disease. Promoting awareness involves education about prevention and treatments, fundraising efforts to help find cures, and support for survivors and those dealing directly with the disease. Breast cancer is the fifth deadliest form of cancer worldwide, and this month helps remind women everywhere to practice breast self-exams and to schedule regular visits and annual mammograms. So get your PINK on this month and support the cause! Halloween is upon us – and that calls for trick-ortreating, costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories and watching horror films – I plan on checking off most of this list. While all this sounds fun, please make sure your kids are safe and check with your town for curfews on Halloween night. All my best to you and yours,

D
Local Food Festival
earborn Market held its first New Jersey Local Food Festival on September 9 to commemorate the end of their summer-long “Buy Jersey Local” promotion. Over 20 vendors behind the delicious products sold at Dearborn Market were available with samples of their products. Some of the products that could be taste-tested included pizza, cookies, cakes, chocolates, honey, teas, sauces, and pickles. All of the products are produced in New Jersey. President of Dearborn Market Frank Luccarelli was pleased with the success of the event. “This was a great opportunity to get the vendors to talk about their products and to tell their story. Every product has a story behind it and our customers can hear about it firsthand.” He noted that due to everyone’s busy schedules browsing through the store is sometimes not an option. This event offered customers a chance to taste products they might not have tried before or even knew were available at Dearborn Market.

5th Annual Colts Neck RockFest Filled with Music, Crafts & a Bonfire! STORY ALEXIS ORLACCHIO
T
he fifth annual Colts Neck Rock Festival took place on Saturday, September 15 from 2:0011:00p.m. “Originally it was going to be a reason to play music with your friends on a nice day in a beautiful park,” said Steve Warendorf, founder of the festival. “It evolved into having some local craft vendors, and it’s just a nice day to get a little band exposure.” Carolyn Roche has been setting up her jewelry stand at the rock festival for the past four years. Roche owns her own business selling her own handcrafted jewelry. “I’d be coming to this festival anyway, I grew up with Steve and Michelle,” said Roche. “So I just bring some stuff and make a little living room.” Roche’s sister, Cindy Pope, also makes little pouches that she calls “concert bags.” “You can put your phone, your money, your ID, and everything you need right there and you won’t lose it,” said Pope. The musicians at the festival played covers of famous songs by bands like The Beatles, Foo Fighters, and K.T. Tunstall. It was an intimate and friendly atmosphere, musicians were spread throughout the park looking for places to practice before show time. Everyone brought blankets and chairs and would play guitar and sing to rehearse before their debut. Children threw a football and blew bubbles in the park while the bands played. Cathy Noblick, co-founder of Musicians on a Mission, a non-profit organization that supports local music and local charities. “We create musical events featuring local talent and get donations for charity.” In November, the member of Musicians on a Mission will be celebrating they’re second anniversary at Chico’s House of Jazz in Asbury Park and they will be releasing a compellation CD of musicians that have played for them over the years. Karen and Lenny Duffi set up a stand selling candy and snacks. The money raised was donated to Saint Mary’s Youth Group, which accompanies the First Saturday Club on an annual trip that takes a group of handicapped individuals to Canada every summer. When the sun and temperature went down, everyone crowded around the wood-burning bonfire for warmth. “Really we just wanted people to utilize the park,” said Michelle Warendorf. “We’ve lived in Colts Neck our whole lives. You pay taxes (to live here), you might as well use what the town has to offer,” said Steve.

Braun’s contribution furthered the element of family involvement in the book, she said, and “he was happy to do it.” The book is available as an iBook, on Amazon.com, BN.com, and, appropriately, the Holmdel Barnes and Noble store. Book signings there, as well as visits to her town library and public schools, are on the agenda this fall, with dates to be announced, said Kairys. An app for the book is almost complete, as well. Kairys says Sunbelievable carries a message about “how wonderful it is to encourage your children through their own storytelling,” for parents to “enjoy the joy” of reading with their children, seeing the illustrations, and seeing a multicultural family, as is Dr. Kairy’s (the entire family, who are Caucasian American and Haitian, make an appearance in the book’s final pages.) That theme will be explored in Kairys’ next book, which will again feature the girls, who get hungry for cake one day and, upon realizing their fridge is void of any, traverse their neighborhood for a slice.

Book that very im- gy training excluportant appointment today with nationally sively on breast renowned and published breast imager, Dr. imaging for the last 15 years. She Deutch today! has interpreted over 100,000 mammograms and performed thousands of image-guided needle biopsies. Her list of over 300 referring physicians is testimony to her stature among the medical community as the area’s leading breast imager. HerSpace Breast Imaging Associates, founded in 2002, is dedicated to putting women at ease while pursuing the clinical objective of detecting and diagnosing breast cancer at its earliest, most curable stage. HerSpace is Dr. Deutch’s vision for the way breast imaging services should be experienced by every woman - a relaxing, warm environment offering the latest techniques and diagnostic tools with compassionate care and a timely diagnosis. Dr. Deutch is a pioneer in breast imaging technology, welcoming to the new HerSpace, the first 3D digital tomosynthesis imaging machine. Digital tomosynthesis is a new technology for breast cancer detection. It takes multiple x-ray pictures of each breast from many angles. The breast is positioned the same way as with a conventional mammogram, but only a little pressure is applied — just enough to keep the breast in a stable position during the procedure. The x-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast while 11 images are taken during a 7-second examination. Then the information is sent to a computer, where it is assembled to produce clear, highly focused 3-dimensional images throughout the breast. Early results with digital tomosynthesis are promising. Researchers believe that this new breast imaging technique will make breast cancers easier to see in dense breast tissue and will make breast screening more comfortable. HerSpace is one of the most advanced breast care facilities in the country and is located at its new home at 300 Highway 35 South in Eatontown. he Northern Chamber of Commerce and Holmdel Recreations sponsored Cross Farm Park’s free movie night on Friday, September 14 at 5:00 p.m. “Northern Monmouth Chamber covers the whole Bayshore region. It’s a great group of local businesses,” said TJ Brustowicz, board member of the Northern Monmouth Chamber. Michelle Frazzitta, Holmdel Township Office employee, said, “This is the first time they’re doing a car show, a movie and a du-wop band,” she continues, “Maybe it will be an annual event.” Previously, Holmdel Township has helped put together some movie nights in the summer sponsored by Vonage at the Holmdel Community Center. “The Executive Director of the Chamber and I came up with the idea to do a movie night for the chamber and it’s also a good way for the chamber members to get their business out in front of the community,” Brustowicz continues, “You’ve got a big reason for folks to come in, with the movie and all the other attractions, and they can show off what the Chamber is all about, too.” After the movie ended, the night concluded with a beautiful fireworks display in the park.

leo Italian Specialties was started in 2000 by owner Vincent Dene. The restaurant name comes from Vincent’s grandfather because the recipes Vincent uses in his pizzeria were passed down from his grandfather, Pasquale Aleo, who spent his life working in restaurants in New York City. Mozzarella is a staple in any Italian restaurant or household, and Aleo has previously been awarded with the best mozzarella in Monmouth County! Their menu ranges from hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta, and chicken and fish entrees and they also have a kid-friendly menu. Aleo Pizza and Pasta is conveniently located next to their catering service, Aleo’s Italian Specialties. Aleo’s catering has supplied many crowds at parties, town festivals and more. On Saturday, September 15, Vincent showed off his cooking skills by doing a demonstration of how to make paella in the parking lot of the Acme shopping Plaza in Lincroft, where his

Back To School Family Movie Night STORY SUSAN MURPHY
L
incroft Elementary School PTA held its second annual Back to School Family Movie Night on September 14. Although the 2012-2013 school year began just five days prior, this event offered students a chance to reconnect outside of the school setting after being apart during the summer. Families brought lawn chairs or blankets and settled on the grass at the back of the school in front of a 21 foot movie screen, awaiting the start of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” Prior to the start of the movie, parents were able to socialize while their children enjoyed the playground. PTA Event co-chairs Rosemary Seppe and Christine Sanpietro noted that the freshly popped popcorn, bottled water, glow-sticks, and the movie were compliments of the PTA. The night was a big success and both students and adults enjoyed the movie and fellowship with friends, shared Mrs. Sanpietro.

Kiwanis Club Of Holmdel Sponsors Second Annual
Wine And Brew Tasting Event STORY SUSAN MURPHY
K
iwanis Club of Holmdel held their second annual Wine and Brew Tasting, Pig Roast and Barbecue at Dearborn Market Greenhouse on September 15. Over 140 guests enjoyed a casual evening of socializing, great music, and delicious food. All proceeds from this event and every event held by the Kiwanis members, will benefit the children in the Bayshore area who are in need, noted President Ron DeLuca. “What we do we do from our hearts and your attendance and support at this event and all of our events allows us to continue to help the children.” This year the Kiwanis offered a Mega 50/50 for which only 200 tickets at $100 each were sold. If all tickets were sold, the winner would receive $10,000.
Ron acknowledged Monmouth County Freeholder Serena DiMaso and Holmdel Mayor Patrick Impreveduto, who were in attendance and then introduced the Kiwanis Club’s Humanitarian of the Year “Big Joe” Henry of 101.5 FM. Ron explained that Big Joe gives from the heart and touches the lives of many people, especially children. Although he was appreciative of the award, Big Joe said, “I don’t like to take the credit because without people like you the kids wouldn’t be helped. I don’t do things single-handedly, it is the people of New Jersey who donate and help out, and that is what makes me do what I do.” Since he began on 101.5, over 15 years ago, he has been associated with helping to raise over 40 million dollars for the people of New Jersey who need it the most. “I am so blessed to be able to do that and it’s thanks to people like members of the Kiwanis Club, like the Luccarelli family, and all of you here tonight.”

he Tara Hansen Foundation will host its first annual Octoberfest, An Event to Prevent on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Dive!, located in Sea Bright for a wine and beer tasting. Taking place from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., the goal of the event is to raise funds to help advocate for the advancement of maternal health awareness. In addition to the tasting featuring local wineries and breweries, there will be a silent auction that you won’t want to miss.
Tara Hansen was a special education teacher in Freehold for six years, she gave birth to her first child on March 25, 2011 and passed away due to complications associated with childbirth six days later. In honor of Tara Hansen, The Tara Hansen Foundation was formed by her husband, Ryan.
Tara Hansen was a special education teacher at the West Freehold School in Freehold. For nearly six years, Tara had the pleasure of teaching children in her hometown. She was able to give back to the community and enjoyed every moment she spent in the classroom. On March 25, 2011, she and her husband Ryan welcomed their first child, Brandon Ryan, into the world. Then, only six days later, Tara passed away due to complications associated with childbirth. “I never anticipated that Tara could die from childbirth,” says Ryan Hansen, founder of the Tara Hansen Foundation. “My goal through education and advocacy is to increase awareness about maternal mortality in the United States and help prevent another child from losing his/her mother.” Tickets may be purchased in advance for a donation of $40 at the Tara Hansen Foundation website at tarahansenfoundation.com or on Facebook. For more information, please email the tarahansenfoundation@gmail.com. The Tara Hansen Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of maternal health awareness in an effort to improve maternal health care. We also give back to the West Freehold School 4th and 5th grade special education department where Tara taught.

Holmdel High School Graduate Heads to China
Before Princeton
T
he Princeton Bridge Year Program allows 28 incoming Princeton freshmen to defer their freshmen year in order to participate in nine months of University-sponsored service at one of four locations: China, India, Senegal, and Peru. Bridge Year aims to give participants greater international perspective and intercultural skills in addition to a deeper appreciation for global service and cultural diversity. This year, 94 applicants applied, up from 59 last year, and Holmdel graduate Richard Chang was one of the 28 who were selected. He and six other students are in China, specifically Kunming in Yunnan Province, doing volunteer work. The Bridge Year does not give participants college credit and participants will thus graduate Princeton as the Class of 2017. Princeton funds the cost of the program - approximately $30,000 for each student. “When I saw that I could have the chance to travel to a foreign country, engage in meaningful international service, and experience a new culture - with Princeton paying for it - I knew this was an opportunity that I couldn’t walk away from,” said Richard. In late April, when making his final college choice, deciding between colleges such as Princeton, West Point, Annapolis, and Georgetown, Richard said that the one of the reasons he chose Princeton was because of its Bridge Year opportunity, in addition to its generous financial aid program and its commitment to undergraduate education. Upon arriving in China in late August, the Bridge Year team first traveled to Tibet for a month for orientation and various service projects, then traveled to Kunming where they are currently staying for the majority of the trip, serving in various NGOs and humanitarian organizations. Some of the organizations they may work with include World Vision and Operation Smile. At the end of the trip, the team will travel to either Shanghai or Beijing to meet with Princeton alumni in China. Since Richard is gone from home for a year, he knows that he’ll miss his family and friends, but was still excited for the journey and the opportunity to help people: “Growing up in my church, Monmouth Community Christian Church, I was taught the importance of compassion, and I am so glad I have this chance to go China to serve the less fortunate.” Upon returning from China, Richard plans to major in the Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs at Princeton and seek a certificate in East Asian Studies. olts Neck Fire Company#1 held its eighth annual golf outing at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Colts Neck on September 10. The golf fee included a continental breakfast, greens fee, cart, barbecue lunch, silent auction, gifts and prizes. Spouses or friends were invited to attend. Event Chairman Captain Mike Romano noted that 80% of the golfers were firefighters and the remaining golfers came to show their support. “It was a beautiful day for the outing and we had the Ladies Auxiliary and the Fire Police here to help us,” he said. Captain Romano was assisted by cochairs Jim Genke and Bob Black. The Hole in One prize, sponsored by Robert Black, Jr., and Patrick and Tricia Brogan, was $10,000. Event Sponsor was ServPro of Freehold/ Middletown; Lunch Sponsor, Casa Luca Foundation; Breakfast Sponsor, Trump National Golf Club. Colts Neck vendors and those from surrounding communities generously donated gifts for the auction, ads for the event journal, prizes, gift certificates, or signage for each of the 18 holes played during the golf outing. Tournament prizes were given to the following golfers. Steve Ellis and Gail Carscadden won Closest to the Pin; Jay Howlett won Closest to the Line; Tim Mariner won Longest Drive; Joe Genke won Longest Putt, 43 feet 6 inches; and Low Foursome were Jim, Genke, Joe Genke, Mike Romano, and Steve Ellis. Co-chair Bob Black noted that die-hard golfer Brad Colin arrived from New Haven, Connecticut to enjoy the outing. Proceeds from the golf outing will be used to maintain the firehouse and purchase new equipment. According to information listed in the golf outing brochure, Colts Neck Fire Department is responsible for providing emergency services to the 13,000 residents of Colts Neck Township. The district covers roughly 32 square miles including stretches of State Routes 18 and 34 and County Route 537. Colts Neck Fire Company#1 maintains four fire trucks to cover this area. A 95 foot ladder truck with a 2,000 gallon per minute pump, an attack pumper with a 1,500 GPM pump, a tanker with a 2,000 GPM pump and a brush truck for off road incidents. Colts Neck Fire Company#1 was organized December 8, 1926, remained in their original firehouse for 26 years, and purchased their first fire truck in March, 1927, which was delivered later that summer. Colts Neck Fire Company#1 purchased their current property on Route 537 in March, 1948, and this was dedicated in 1953. This firehouse has been expanded several times and a new building added in the back to house more equipment. These expansions were paid for with money donated by community-minded citizens and businesses. Colts Neck Fire Department is not supported by a separate fire district and relies heavily on donations for support.

Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Presents
Annual Wine And Spirits Tasting
B
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
ayshore Community Hospital Foundation held its fourth annual Wine and Spirits Tasting fundraiser on September 6 at Addison Park in Aberdeen. The event will benefit Bayshore Community Hospital’s Cardiac Services Programs. This year, the event featured not only premium wines from around the world, but also international beers and spirits. An extensive array of hors d’ oeuvres complemented the sampling of fine wines, beers and spirits. A silent auction included 75 themed baskets, many filled with wine, beer, or spirits. Event co-chairs Fern and Peter Esposito and Mary and Dr. Elias Lehaf greeted and mingled with the 230 guests in attendance, which was up from 128 last year. “Our goal is to continually increase the support we provide to the hospital through this popular event, ultimately benefiting Bayshore’s Cardiac Services,” said Mrs. Esposito. The co-chairs expressed special thanks to the Scaduto and Azzolina families of Spirits Unlimited and Food Circus Foodtown for once again facilitating many of the wines and spirits that were featured during the evening.
Honored was current Foundation trustee and immediate past chair Wendell A. Smith, Esq. of Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith and Davis for his numerous contributions to Bayshore Community Hospital. Mr. Smith is a tremendous philanthropist and humanitarian in the area. He was a co-founder of both the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence and the Holmdel Theatre Company, Inc. He was a past president and also served on the Holmdel Board of Education for nine years. Mr. Smith has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1983 and last March was honored by the New Jersey chapter of the Community Associations Institute with its first Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees Chair Serena DiMaso, Esq. said of the evening, “The energy created since the Meridian network merged with Bayshore Hospital has become contagious, as you can see by the overwhelming amount of support for tonight's event. I am so proud to be a part of the Bayshore/Meridian family. I know that this hospital will be another jewel for Holmdel while providing outstanding care for all the area's residents. Our co-chairs and committee members have done a fabulous job in their efforts to raise funds for cardiac care services. I know that this is only the beginning of a great future for Bayshore Community Hospital and I can not wait for our story to unfold.” President of the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations David Flood said, “As we continue to grow the breadth and depth of services at Bayshore Community Hospital, events such as this one are critical to fund new technologies and programs for the communities we serve. The Cardiac Services program at Bayshore has become a signature service for the hospital and will be the cornerstone of Bayshore’s future.”

Bayshore also provides a breadth of minimally-invasive cardiovascular treatment options through its multi-specialty Cardiac Catheritization Laboratory and Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) Suite. Additionally, Bayshore's comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program allows patients to gain heart strength and stay healthy. Bayshore continues to offer a wide array of services, including emergency medicine, cardiac catheterization, surgical services, wound care, sleep services, diagnostic imaging, women's services with digital mammography, as well as a designated primary stroke center. The Guild is a women’s spiritual, charitable, educational and social organization of Saint Mary’s Parish in Colts Neck. They are dedicated to assisting women and children in need and carry out that mission through fundraisers and outreach. First-time chairperson Tracy Borut said she was very appreciative of the help everyone in the Guild offered. “They were like little worker bees, efficient and supportive of me. I was very happy to do this and to know our efforts will help those in need.” She was guided by co-president Kathy Adleman, who offered ideas and explained procedures. Publicity chair Ann Marie Dayton noted, “We praise Tracy for stepping forward to do this and are fortunate that she agreed to be the chairperson. She has done a great job.” The Clothing and Linen Sale includes a special section known as “The Boutique” at which gowns, suits, finer blouses and pants are available. Anything from office-wear to special occasion-wear is located in this area. Freda O’Doherty has been in charge of this section for many years. “Some of the items we receive still have the store tags on them. People are very generous,” she said. All clothing proceeds will be distributed to various charitable organizations.

Every October, Martha Mary Guild members have fun “modeling” their purchases from the September Clothing Sale. The Fashion Show is the highlight of this meeting, but there are other good reasons to attend on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m., we will meet in the Church to welcome and install new members. This ceremony is followed by a “Pot Luck Dinner”, which always features many delicious dishes – so don’t eat dinner before the meeting! After we have sated our appetites, we will present the Clothing Sale Fashion Show. PHOTO: Members showing off their clothing finds from September Clothing Sale.
VILLAGE SCHOOL STUDENTS
COMPETE IN OLYMPICS STORY Susan Murphy
M
embers of the Parent School Association (PSA) of Village School in Holmdel found a creative way to welcome students back to school. On September 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the cafeteria/gymnasium and a section behind the Village School became Olympic territory. Event Chair Darlene Kiss explained, “Each year we do something different for the children. We wanted to give them some freedom outdoors after being in the classrooms all day, so this year we are having the Olympics.” She said there were about 300 children in attendance. “The turnout is just phenomenal. Luckily we have about 100 volunteers, mostly students from William R. Satz and Holmdel High School working towards their community service.” Games included bean bag toss, jumping rope, hula hoops, the high jump, relay race, bubble station, ribbon twirling, miniature golf, and plastic egg race. Younger students or their siblings were also able to sit at tables and color. Parents were able to pre-order pizza before the event which was served promptly at 6:00 p.m. By 6:30 p.m., the Olympics began and excitement filled the air! Medals were given to the students at the end of the evening.

This provides long-term results and greatly enhances the overall health of the individual and their body works at a higher level with less stress on the nervous system. How do you measure correction? We take and thoroughly analyze full spine x-rays in the seated position of each patient. In order to measure correction we must know the following: 1. What normal structure of the spine is including the skull, full spine and pelvis. 2. Make valid scientific measurements of the direction and amount of spinal displacement. 3. Classify the configuration- balanced or unbalanced, and its severity. 4. Calculate the amount of soft tissue injury and impairment. With this information we can compare the patient’s spine to the optimum upright spine. To measure correction, we x-ray our patients throughout their program. The following is an actual example of a patient at the Active Healing Center. Initial x-rays of the lower spine revealed a 27 degree scoliosis, 25 mm of left pelvic imbalance with significant elevation of left hip relative to right and severe degenerative joint disease of the lower spine. These are significant findings greatly altering normal function of the lower spine, hips and legs and expediting the degenerative process. After five weeks of care, in-office and home, the x-rays revealed the following: 1. 30% improvement of scoliosis 2. 84% improvement of pelvic imbalance These are excellent results made in a very short time period, enhancing the function of the spine and body while slowing the degenerative process. This information was provided by Dr. Tom Gustafson of Active Healing Center in Colts Neck. To be evaluated and determine if you are a candidate for their program, please contact the Active Healing Center at 732.683.0200 to schedule your appointment.

As with any medical concern regarding your pets, your family veterinarian is your first line of defense. By bringing your pets in for their yearly checkups and consulting your family veterinarian whenever a concern arises, medical issues can be dealt with promptly. When your family veterinarian does have a concern that your pet may be suffering from cancer, they are best able to advise the next step in your pet’s care. Typically, no two cancers behave exactly the same way. As such, often times after pets have been diagnosed with cancer, or when there is a concern of cancer, your family veterinarian will schedule a consultation with a veterinary oncologist. Veterinary oncologists receive additional training after completing veterinary school through internship and residency training. These doctors are trained not only in the diagnosis of cancers in pets, but also in how best to treat the various cancers we see in the pet population.

ver the past several decades, cancer treatment has become an increasingly sought after service in the veterinary profession. Just as in seen in human medicine, the cancers that are seen in dogs and cats affect a wide variety of organs and can have varied prognoses. Just as the phrase goes, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ it can also be said that ‘it takes a village to treat the veterinary cancer patient’. This collaborative effort ensures that our furry family members are able to spend as much high-quality time with their families as possible when they are faced with a cancer diagnosis.
Some cancers are treated through the use of surgery, some with chemotherapy, some with radiation therapy and still others through the use of a combination of some or all of these modalities. The role of the veterinary oncologist is to take all the information available and help decide what treatment options are in the best interest of your pet. While your veterinary oncologist may be the person you interact with at your appointment, a number of individuals are often involved in the decision-making process in determining what treatments are best. These individuals include veterinary surgeons, radiation oncologists, internists and technicians. Every patient is different just as every cancer is different. Through discussing individual cases with other veterinarians your veterinary oncologist can ensure that your pet’s needs are met to ensure the best outcome possible. At the end of the day, treating your pets for cancer, or any other medical issue that requires referral, is a team effort. Your family veterinarian and the other specialists involved in caring for your pets all have the same goal, keeping them happy and healthy. October 2012

R
ob Kevlin, a young man graced with dark good looks and a big, fill-the-room baritone. Brooklyn-born and New Jersey-raised, Kevlin grabbed hold of music at an early age and never let go. “A microphone was his first and last toy,” says his mother, a former pianist in her native Russia who instilled a love of music in her young son. Kevlin started to sing as soon as he could talk, belting out family favorites at parties and performing on a makeshift stage in his home to increasingly astonished friends and family. “I first realized that I had a real voice when I was in the fifth grade and the school principal pulled me aside to give me a rare compliment,” says Kevlin. Singing his way through childhood, often accompanied by his operatically-gifted grandfather, Kevlin started to appear in local talent shows and high school musical productions. He worked with the noted voice teacher Felix Moltzer at Monmouth Conservatory of Music, then studied with Nancy Evers and further trained with Richard Dorr from Julliard. While attending Rutgers University, Kevlin appeared in campus productions of “Jekyll & Hyde”, “Footloose” and “Promises, Promises” as well as several others. After graduating Rutgers University, Kevlin pursued graduate studies at Seton Hall University where he earned his Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. In addition, he decided to pursue singing more aggressively, seeing if he could make it his career. “Music is how I express myself. It fills every part of my life. My life would be lacking

if I didn’t pursue performing,” said Kevlin. Since then, his performances have included his Off Broadway run at the Triad Theatre, the legendary Carnegie Hall, and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where he won the International Talent Competition “USA World Showcase” and was crowned as the TV Trophy Winner on PAX television in front of millions nationwide. He has also sung the national anthem on several occasions in front of thousands, performed in solo concerts to sold out audiences, granted several interviews to 620 AM radio as well as 87.7 FM, and appeared on “Time Out”, a celebrity international television news program broadcast in 19 countries, reaching more than 50 million people. His debut album from Tate Music Group showcases his captivating voice and incredible songs with the collaboration of terrific songwriters who took Kevlin’s vision and brought it to life. He has the voice, looks, and stage presence, but what makes him special is how he connects with an audience. It’s a warmth that can’t be taught, and it is what makes Kevlin stand out from the crowd. Rob Kevlin’s debut album from Tate Music Group is available on Amazon and Rhapsody as well as directly from Tate Music Group. Fans are invited to visit him on his Fan page at www.facebook.com/rkevlin, as well as www.robkevlin.com and www.youtube.com/robkevlin. Most recently, Kevlin has performed at Gizzi’s Bar & Lounge in NYC and will be performing at Desmond’s Tavern located at 433 Park Avenue South in NYC on November 16, at 9:00 p.m.

Sixth Annual
Saint Benedict Parish Fair
Celebrates 50th Birthday of Saint Benedict School STORY ALEXIS ORLACCHIO
T
he sixth annual Saint Benedict Parish Fair was held on Sunday, September 9. This year was extra special because the community also celebrated the 50th birthday of Saint Benedict School. “They honored the faculty today. Father Dan blessed us,” said Patricia Tuttle, Saint Benedict School Faculty member. Reverend Daniel F. Swift has been the leader of the Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church parish since October of 2005. “The fair was conceived as a ‘community building’ event for Saint Benedict Church and School,” said Mary Granito, Saint Benedict School Public Relations Coordinator. “(It is) intended to bring the community together for a day of fun and camaraderie for all ages.” Giggles and screams echoed in the Saint Benedict School Courtyard. The scent of popcorn and cotton candy floated through the air. For just a two dollar admission fee for children six and older, kids could play games to try and win prizes, make their own jewelry, get their faces painted and more! The Parish Fair takes place every

September, except for last year. The fair would have fallen on the date of September 11, so a special memorial service was held instead. “We have seen upwards of 2,000 attendees,” Granito continues, “It is a shared effort with some 400 volunteers involved in producing the event. The funds that are raised are used to offset the cost of holding the fair.” Conrad Corpus has two children enrolled at Saint Benedict School and volunteers for many different departments for the school. “I help out as much as I can,” said Corpus. “You can tell (how much fun the kids have at the fair). It’s pretty much family-oriented. The best part is you bring your own family from outside. My mother–in-law and my cousins, who don’t even go to this school or church (are here) and they enjoy themselves.” Kids could participate in games to try to win prizes, which ranged from stuffed animals to frisbees. For the thrill-seekers, there was rock climbing, a blow up slide, and spinning teacups. Kids could test their aim at the dunk tank or bocce ball
and there was entertainment provided by various dance teams and a magician. “It reminded me of old parish fairs that I used to go to when I was a kid and they were always a lot of fun,” said Lori Woodcock of Matawan. Jackie Orcurran performed with her husband Joe who plays guitar for their band, Hair of the Dog. They have a son in third grade at Saint Benedict School. “It’s really fun. A lot of parents can’t make it to see us when we play in town. So this is good, because they get to bring the kids,” said Orcurran. There was entertainment for adults, too. A beer garden equipped with television sets playing Sunday night football were set up. “I think the best part of the fair is just the sense of community that it builds. I think it brings the school community together with the parish community. It’s just a great day for Saint Benedict’s. Period,” said Saint Benedict School Principal Mary Ellen Lilly. This is Lilly’s thirteenth year as Principal at Saint Benedict School. “It is still the best job in the world.”

n May 19, Junior Girl Scout Troops 650 and 903 executed and completed the requirements to earn their Bronze Award, which is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve.
For their project, the girls chose a school that could benefit from a volunteer project due to a lack of their own funds. The girls chose Memorial School, which is part of the Union Beach School District. After meeting with the school’s Director of Curriculum, the girls chose to design a landscape for the main entrance of the building. The girls spent this year planning their project which included: researching trees, shrubs, plants and flowers, sketching a design for the main entrance and seeking donations from local nurseries. On May 19, the girls successfully executed their plan by ‘breaking ground’ and planting the many trees, shrubs, plants and flowers that were donated by local nurseries willing to help with their project. The girls worked under the guidance of a wonderful landscaper, Peter Macaluso, owner of Absolute Quality Lawn Care, Inc. and would like to acknowledge his efforts in overseeing the development of the general design and digging the trenches necessary for the girls to plant. Troops 650 and 903 would also like to acknowledge the following local nurseries, who with their donations, helped make a beautiful landscape for Memorial School: Bayshore Greenhouses & Garden Supplies, Dearborn Market, Gialanella Evergreens & Nursery, Holmdel Farms, Maple Leaf Gardens and Molzon’s Nursery. Anissa Quirk and Barbara Singer, co-leaders of Troop 903 and Laurie Tascione, leader of Troop 650, are extremely proud of the girls for showing great initiative, commitment and teamwork. Congratulations to the following girls on your achievement: Emily Cieplensky, Sanjana Gupta, Madison Longo, Tara Musialowicz, Abbey Quirk, Kelsy Rey, Allyssa Singer, Madeline Tascione, Meredith Theobald, Tanya Wladika and Madison Yuen.

Out on the playground, Ranney has increased the choice of activities for all Lower School students, which supports well-supervised, unstructured play. “Over the fall months, the playground will be updated with shade structures for students to gather and play games under, seating areas for friendly afternoon conversations, a chalkboard wall for our budding artists, a chess table for our students who enjoy strategizing, and large interlocking blocks and beams for our budding architects,” explained Shana Lindsey, Assistant Head of the Lower School. “Our early childhood and young Lower School students have construction trucks, foam blocks and rocks, play houses, parachutes, and beanbags for imaginative play and game creation on the playground. For our students who love to jump rope and play ball games, we have created a paved area with a basketball hoop and have increased our quantity of balls to allow for small games of catch between two friends or large games between classes.” These structural and material improvements for the Beginners through fifth grade students create spaces and activities that support students’ social and physical development. Ranney School continues to strive for the success of its students from Beginners (age three) to grade 12 by continually providing them with innovative and rewarding educational experiences.

Stephanie Katzman, Early Childhood Director explained, “Ranney’s mission-promise and small student-teacher ratio remains the same while creating more opportunities for our students to explore and develop their interpersonal and cognitive abilities.” With three teachers in a classroom, increased technology in the form of iPads, SMARTboards and improvements in the math/science center, an abundant library, and a dramatic play area that includes a new puppet theater, the Beginners navigate through their day, moving through a variety of centers with increased opportunities to experience small group and 1:1 instruction. Continued weekly specials such as music and library, as well as gym class twice a week and swim once per week in the newly enhanced aquatics center all remain highly anticipated experience during the school week. “Our commitment to teaching developmentally appropriate curriculum while building our student’s self-confidence is still at the forefront of our daily goals,” assured Mrs. Katzman.

anney School is pleased to announce the new renovations that have been made in its Beginner Wing, the Lower School Music and Art rooms, and the playground. Lower School students now attend art and music classes in the new double-sized classrooms that have ample space needed to support their unique artistic and musical expression. The youngest Panthers at Ranney have begun their year in brightly colored rooms with walls that have expanded the classroom space–this improvement allows three year olds to explore, create and have fun while navigating through a spacious classroom filled with high interest, hands-on activities.

oth parents have a legal obligation to contribute to the support of their unemancipated children to the best of their financial abilities. What does that mean? It means that, although both have the same legal obligation, the dollar amount must be tailored to the financial ability of each parent.
In addition, the costs to provide food, clothing, and medical care, not to mention vacations, lessons and extracurricular activities are also factored in. For parents with a combined net weekly income of $3,600.00 ($187,200.00 per year net), or less, the New Jersey Child Support Guidelines are used to determine child support payments. For parents with a higher combined net income, the court must apply the maximum award provided under the Child Support Guidelines and supplement it with a discretionary award

after considering the additional income and several factors enumerated in the statute. Court Rules require child support to be paid through the New Jersey Family Support Payment Center unless good cause exists to allow direct payments from one spouse to the other or the parties agree otherwise. So far, no reported case in New Jersey has found good cause to deviate from this requirement. Extraordinary expenses, such as private school tuition, catastrophic medical expenses and college costs, are generally identified separately and contributions to these expenses are typically paid in addition to the child support payment (rather than included within it). The obligation to pay child support continues until each
child is emancipated. Emancipation typically occurs when a child reaches age eighteen and graduates from high school. Emancipation is, however, generally delayed until after a child completes a post-secondary school course of study, whether a two year college, a four year college, a vocational school or a trade school. As long as the child diligently pursues his/her educational plan, emancipation is delayed until completion. When emancipation occurs, child support ends. Peter C. Nussara’s most recent project, featured at The Seaport Diner in Keyport, features classic ‘50s automobiles that complement the classic feel of one of the few remaining trolley car diners in the area. At Romeo’s Restaurant in Jamesburg, her Italian style painting transports guests to an imaginary place somewhere between the country and the city with magnificent Roman forums and a 14-foot piece entitled Manhattan of Italy. Watch out for more exciting pieces from this up and coming area artist, including a piece at The Goddard School in Hazlet. I
n September, SJVHS administration, faculty and staff joined Father Bill O’Brien in blessing the new Vianney Activities Center (VAC). Physical Education classes, athletic practices, club activities and other events will take place in the VAC during the 2012-2013 school year. The indoor facility was constructed with funds from generous gifts to the Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign began in 2007 and ended June 30, 2012. President Joseph Deroba said excitedly, “This activity center is a dream come true. We are the only Catholic School with a 12,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility that really enhances the educational and athletic opportunities for our students.” Other facilities at Saint John Vianney have been updated and remodeled for the upcoming school year. A new strength and conditioning facility is now available to all students with over 3,600 square feet of space and new equipment. The music department now has a multi-tiered room for practicing and storing equipment. Principal Steven DiMezza stated, “The SJVHS community is excited about all the changes to our campus. We are eager for everyone to use the improved facilities here at Saint John Vianney High School.

Holmdel Green Team Advises Residents to Clear the Curb & Mine “Black Gold”
T
hose beautiful autumn leaves will soon start to fall and piles of them will line our streets, waiting to be picked up by our town. Piles left on the grass for long smother it, and some leaves blow back onto your lawn or your neighbor’s. Leaves left illegally in the street divert drivers to the middle of the road, and can block the view of driveways and clog storm sewers. What’s more, it costs the town thousands of dollars to pick them up – a cost that eventually shows up in our tax bills. “There are better ways to deal with leaves,” asserts Green Team member Janet Jackel, “especially once we see them as a resource rather than a nuisance. A leaf pile that sits discretely at the back of your property will decompose to yield the ‘black gold’ that can enrich the garden for next year’s flowers and shrubs.” What to do with those excess leaves? The Green Team advises corralling those leaves in your back or side yard and allowing them to turn into garden-enhancing humus. Earthworms and millions of microbes, naturally occurring with the leaves, decompose the leaves into the dark, crumbly soil enhancer sometimes known as “black gold”. Janet Berk uses the simplest strategy, especially good for people who live in or next to woods. She piles them in a heap at woods’ edge. The pile should be at least four feet in diameter and three feet high to reach the temperature at which the organisms work. Some gardeners like to use three piles: one for newly fallen leaves, one which is actively composting, and one for finished compost. In a surprisingly short time the leaves ‘cook down’ like spinach in a pot of boiling water.
Betsy Wilson with finished compost in the summer.
For those who prefer more containment of the leaves, an enclosure can easily be constructed. All it takes are four 4 or 5-foot poles and some galvanized three or four-foot high hex netting from the hardware store. One open or openable side permits easy access for filling and turning the pile. The pile should be kept moist for best decomposition. Scott Goldstein hastens the composting process by running over the leaves with his mower. He likes to alternate brown leaves with green garden trimmings. The pile should be turned about once a month in warm weather, or right away if the pile gets soggy. Bob Wilson humors his ‘neatnik’ wife Betsy by feeding their leaves and other garden debris through a mulch grinder. The smaller sized particles decompose in just a few months. But by any of these methods, nature’s own recyclers will turn autumn’s leaves into summer’s compost. There are many good sources for composting instructions. You can go to rce.rutgers.edu for an authoritative discussion of leaf composting. Under ‘publications’ you will find a ‘gardening and landscaping’ section. YouTube also has many entries on the same subject.

T
he Colts Neck Community Band, one of the largest and finest performing community bands in the state of NJ, is proud to be in its eleventh season. On November 1, it will present its fall concert featuring the clarinet section in “Clarinet Candy,” a rollicking piece by Leroy Anderson. In addition, two compositions by contemporary composers, the energetic “Rise of the Firebird” by Steven Reineke and the majestic “Spirit of the Sequoia” by Philip Sparke, will be featured. A medley of tunes from “Man of La Mancha, “March of the Belgian Paratroopers” by Pierre Leemans, and beautiful arrangements of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and ” Shenandoah” round out the program. The concert begins at 7:30 at the Colts Neck High School auditorium. In its continuing series of concerts in other area communities, the band will return to Jackson, for a concert on December 6 at Four Seasons at South Knolls. On May 23, 2013, the band will present its spring concert in a collaborative performance with the Exultation Ringers, an adult handbell choir from the Colts Neck Reformed Church under the direction of Maggie Tripold. This concert will be at the Colts Neck High School and begins at 7:30. The band will conclude its eleventh season with an outdoor concert in Thompson Park on Thursday, June 6, 2013. Under the direction of Kelly Tyma, Richard Grossman, and Joseph Lawlor, the band currently has over 80 musicians which include music teachers, talented high school students, professional musicians and accomplished amateur musicians. O
n September 7, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 2012 list of Blue Ribbon Schools. Saint Leo the Great School in Lincroft was recognized as “Exemplary High Performing”, making it one of the top 50 non-public schools in the country. To receive the National Blue Ribbon designation, the school must be in the top 15% of schools, which is determined by annual standardized test scores. Saint Leo’s is the only elementary school in the Monmouth-Ocean area to receive this 2012 honor. (Communications High School in Wall and MAST High School in Manahawkin qualified at the high school level.) Secretary Duncan released a statement which said: “Schools honored with the National Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and that education is the surest pathway to a strong, secure future.” The journey to Blue Ribbon began several years ago at Saint Leo’s. The administration focused on improving reading and math skills, leading to significant jumps in test scores from 2008-2011. With that accomplished, they initiated the application process starting in November 2011 and culminating in the Blue Ribbon announcement last month. The process was made easier because Saint Leo’s already had a strategic plan in place, including components for technology and professional (teacher) development. Mr. Neil Begley, who was Vice Principal during the application process, says, “Our strategic plan is a living document. We re-visit it monthly to make sure we are on track.” Mr. Begley took on the role of principal as of the current school year, and has this to say about the honor, “Our recognition as a Blue Ribbon School is the result of the hard work of our entire community. Our faculty and staff, students, and parents should be very proud to know that our efforts toward helping our students reach their maximum potential have contributed to this outstanding achievement.” There will be an official recognition ceremony held by Secretary Duncan in D.C. on November 12-13. OAK HILL ACADEMY ATHLETES
HONORED WITH TEAM SWEATSHIRTS
FOR UNDEFEATED SEASONS
I
t was a spring season to remember for Oak Hill Academy’s athletic program. Both the tennis and softball teams went undefeated!
For the tennis team, this milestone has become the norm. In fact, the tennis team has been undefeated for the past three years. The top players all had excellent records. In particular, first singles player, Cameron Gruss, had two years undefeated during his 6th and 7th grade seasons at this position. All of this was under the direction of Oak Hill Coach Miss Patrice Murray, who is also the school’s Director of Personnel and Administration. Miss Murray also coaches the women’s tennis team at Monmouth University. The softball team enjoyed its first year as an undefeated team. Led under the direction of Coach Linda Porzio, the team combined expert pitching with clutch hitting to claim victory in each game. The future for this team looks bright as many of the players, including the pitchers, will be returning next year. On the opening day of school, both teams were honored at an assembly in the school’s Student Activities Center. All players were presented with special “undefeated” sweatshirts in honor of their accomplishments. The crowd cheered with pride for their “Mustang” teams.
TOP: At an opening day assembly, Oak Hill Academy Girls’ Softball Team was given gray sweatshirts for their undefeated spring season. BOTTOM: A red OHA sweatshirt was given to each member of the school tennis team who enjoyed its third consecutive undefeated season.

NOVEMBER WEEKEND TO HOST NOTED AUTHOR ANITA DIAMANT
A
n exciting weekend hosting noted author Anita Diamant is being planned by three local religious organizations. Although this is scheduled for November 2-4, 2012, it is not too early to pick up one of her books (great reading!). Her most notable book “The Red Tent”, celebrating its 15th year in print, became a national best seller, and has been published in 25 countries and 20 languages. It won the 2001 Book Sense Book of the Year Award. Based on the biblical story of Dinah, “The Red Tent” speaks to all people, as it addresses the role of women, their close knit bonds, and how their lives are impacted by a patriarchal mentality. Dinah is only briefly mentioned in the Old Testament, but this novel fills in the spaces and makes for a riveting story of how this heroine’s life may have actually played out in ancient times. Truly a must read for everyone, books will be available in local libraries and are already reappearing on book club lists in libraries, synagogues and churches. Anita Diamant makes her home in the Boston area with her husband and daughter and is a member of Congregation Beth El of the
Sudbury River Valley. She is president and founder of Mayyim Hayyim: Living Waters Community Mikveh and the Paula Brody & Family Education Center, a 21st century institution dedicated to exploring the ancient traditions of immersion. Other novels by the author include her most recent, “Day After Night,” set in 1945, telling the story of four women Holocaust survivors who meet in a British internment camp in Palestine, and befriend one another as they grapple with their new lives in a new land. “Good Harbor” and “The Last Days of Dogtown” round out her list of fiction books. She has also written a series of non-fictional books that have become standard reference guides to contemporary Jewish life. wMs. Diamant has also published articles in the Boston Globe Magazine, Parenting Magazine, Parents, Reform Judaism and Boston Magazine. She can be found online at www. jewishfamily.com, and has a most interesting blog. For more information about Ms. Diamant and her many interests and accomplishments, see www.anitadiamant.com and www.mayyimhayyim.org.
