The Pickleball Craze is Here to Stay!

By LiliAnn Paras Pickleball, the sport with the odd name and unfamiliar terms like “dinking” and “staying out of the kitchen”, is sweeping Monmouth County, the country, and beyond. It may seem like a new phenomenon, but it was actually invented 57 years ago, way back in the summer of 1965. Three dads in Washington State devised the game, with homemade equipment, to alleviate their children’s summer doldrums. Described as a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, it has evolved from a backyard game into the professional realm and is now heralded as the fastest growing sport in America, capturing all ages and genders. What accounts for its popularity? A big reason is its versatility. Pickleball is enjoyed by casual players seeking a social outlet as well as by fierce competitors. There are indoor and outdoor courts found in public parks, private clubs, and in more than a few driveways. The ranges of age

and skill levels are broad. Celebrities are a key pickleball strategy taking patience and hooked, “pickleball influencers” are a thing, practice. A dink properly executed can cause schools are adding it to the curriculum, and the opponents to make an error in the return, tournaments abound. The rules are simple, allowing the “dinker” to slam one back after the equipment is minimal and inexpensive, all. Serves are subject to rules too. Serving “is not intended as an offensive weapon,” and most importantly, it is a lot of fun. Pickleball is played as doubles or singles but reports USA Pickleball, and therefore only the majority of play is with two players per an underhand serve or a drop (bounce) team. The court is about a third as large as a serve is allowed. Like ping pong, the serving tennis court with a low net, 34 inches high at team scores and games are generally played the center. The ball is similar to a wiffle ball to 11 points with the familiar “win by two WHERE TO PLAY and the paddles are shaped like ping pong points” rule. Speculation about the origin of the name paddles but larger. There are a few nuances in the rules, but they are easily learned and continues, although the consensus is the implemented. There is a restricted area official name was inspired by Pickles, the called “the kitchen” which extends 7 feet pet cocker spaniel of one of the creators. on each side of the net, created to prevent Pickles disrupted games by running off with players from smashing the balls at the the balls. The new sport needed a name and net. “Dinking” or hitting the ball in a slow, “pickleball” seemed appropriate. Grab a paddle and join the nearly 5 million controlled arc within that kitchen area, is encouraged. It can feel counterintuitive not (and growing) number of pickleball players to slam the ball at all times, but dinking is and have fun while getting in shape.

The Monmouth County Historical Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Preservation Awards program, which acknowledges individuals or groups that have preserved historical structures in Monmouth County. “Preserving historical buildings in Monmouth County connects us to our history and gives us a physical reminder of our rich heritage,” said County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the County’s Historical Commission. “It is important for Monmouth County to recognize those who work vigorously to preserve our local buildings of historical significance, which can be a costly undertaking.” Eligible applicants include private citizens, organizations, businesses, municipalities, or any group that recently preserved a historic structure. The nominated property should be a building or structure historically noteworthy in some way and at least 50 years old. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 22. MEDIATION & ARBITRATION Often people confuse the concepts of mediation and arbitration. Both fall under the general heading of Alternate Dispute Resolution or ADR. ADR is a means by which to encourage and even facilitate a resolution of legal disputes outside the Court system. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which are an increase in the number of cases and a decline in the number of court personnel resulting from budgeting constraints, case backlogs are increasing at an alarming rate. In an effort to move disputes through the system faster, our court system encourages the use of alternate paths to reach a resolution. This is most prevalent in the Family Court where caseloads are the greatest. Fewer judges than just a year or two ago must handle increasing caseloads in a wide variety of family-related matters – divorce, domestic violence, guardianship, juvenile, adoption and more. In order to free court personnel to handle cases that do not as readily lend themselves to settlement (i.e., domestic violence, guardianship, juve-

nile and adoption cases), divorce cases are, in ever increasing numbers, being referred to mediation and/or arbitration. Mediation is a process in which a “third-party neutral” is selected by the parties. The mediator then tries to help the parties reach an agreement. Most frequently, the parties participate in mediation with their lawyers. Depending on the unique characteristics of a case, a settlement may require only one session. More frequently, two or three sessions are needed. In cases involving complex factual or legal issues, many sessions may be necessary. A successful mediation results in an agreement that is committed to writing and signed by both parties. It, thus, becomes a binding contract and will become part of the Judgment of Divorce. Arbitration also requires the selection of a “third party neutral”, but that is where the similarity ends. The arbitrator does not assist the parties in reaching an agree-

ment. The arbitrator listens to both sides of the case and then makes a decision by which both parties are bound. The “rules of engagement” are agreed on at the outset. Arbitration can be a relatively informal process. It can also be as formal as a trial – with the strict enforcement of rules of procedure and rules of evidence. Each side to the arbitration presents his/ her testimony and evidence. At the conclusion of the presentations, the arbitrator renders a decision in writing – much like a judge would after a trial – and the parties are bound. The Arbitration Award is then converted to a Judgment of the Court and enforceable as such. Mediation and arbitration can save time and money by shortening the time it takes to finalize the divorce because, although the court monitors the progress of the case, most of the heavy lifting is done outside the court system – away from the delays and backlogs that have become all too common.

Thousands Gather to Celebrate Annual Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade Event Honored Charity Beneficiaries Shore House & Monmouth County Historical Association

Despite the cold, thousands gathered along River Road in Rumson on March 13 to cheer on the 2022 Parade Grand Marshal Charles Hill Jones and his family who led bagpipe bands, floats, high school marching bands, Irish Step Dancers, antique and classic cars, veteran groups, scouts, local sports teams, non-profit clubs, novelty acts, and area business and civic groups. The community also welcomed home USA Olympic Team Bobsledder and Fair Haven resident Charlie Volker on a Team USA float. Funds raised from the Parade’s year-round events have supported local charities that benefit the community. The 2022 Parade benefited Shore House, the first-of-its-kind in New Jersey free

mental health support community open to all who seek its services. The Parade Committee also designated funds for the preservation work of the Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA), which the Jones family has supported for many decades. “The return of the parade signals a return to a more normal community life; we are thrilled to be able to support Shore House for providing mental health services and the Monmouth County Historical Association for preserving our county’s history,” said Parade Committee Member Jamie McManus. “Since our inception in 2013, we have given more than $250,000 to area charities so they can continue to support our community.”

LADY LANCERS WILL FOREVER WEAR THE CROWN & the Coach Who Got Them There

fter more than 30 years of deciding the number one team in the state in various sports, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Tournament of Champions (TOC) is crowning its last teams after the November 2021 decision to discontinue the tournament. Many schools and sports programs have made a name for themselves in the TOC since it began in the 1980s, but one team stands out among the exceptional as the most-winning girls’ team in any sport in the state of New Jersey – Holmdel’s St. John Vianney’s (SJV) Girls Basketball Team. Not only do the Lady Lancers have a long history of success, but the current players have taken their legacy to a whole new level.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

Many are calling the Lady Lancer lineup the best ever in NJ girls basketball history, with the 2022 season setting several records. After their stellar season, post-season wins included the Shore Conference Tournament and the Non Public A State Championship, which is SJV’s 18th state title in program history (17 Non Public A and one Non Public B) and a state record. But one goal remained for the team – to win the only game left and the only title that had eluded them thus far this season – the very last Tournament of Champions to ever be played. On March 20, the Lady Lancers not only cemented their reign as the most-winning team by defeating Rutgers Prep 72-52, they added to SJV’s all-time record for the most TOC wins in girls’ basketball history bringing the total to eight (2022, 2016, 2009, 1999, 1997, 1995, 1993, 1991).

The victory also extended the Lady Lancers’ in-state winning streak to 74 games, with 2019 marking the last time they fell to a New Jersey opponent. Only twice during that span did the team lose a game: in 2020 to New York Long Island Lutheran, and this year to the top-ranked team in the country, Washington D.C.’s Sidwell Friends. Although the players change at least every four years, for the past 16 years one person has remained constant the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Dawn Karpell. An alumna of SJV Class of ’95, Coach Karpell’s high school team won two TOC titles, four State Championships, and three Shore Conference Tournament titles. She was All-Shore, All-County, and All-State (non-public) scoring more than 1100 points in her high school career. A seventh-grade social studies teacher at Thorne Middle School in Middletown, Coach Karpell is married to Jeff Karpell who teaches and coaches at Rumson Fair Haven High School. They live in Holmdel with their mini goldendoodle Holley and their three children: Sarah, a junior at Fordham University who plays on the basketball team (SJV alumna); Julia, a sophomore at SJV who plays on the basketball team; and Jake, a fourth grader. We caught up with Coach Karpell to share her thoughts at this special time in Lady Lancer history. CM: Why did you become a coach? Coach Karpell: I grew up playing basketball and always took an interest in learning all parts of the game. I knew once I was done playing I was going to become a coach as I always loved the ‘x and o’ side of the game. As I have grown as a coach, one of the things I have become most passionate about is improving my players. I take great pride in them getting better as a team and individually each time we are in the gym. Many of the

girls that play in our program aspire to play on the college level, so I take great pride in preparing them for that and want them to be successful on that level as well.

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS ENDS

CM: Why did you choose SJV? Coach Karpell: Before SJV, I coached one year at Keansburg High School and four years at Holmdel High School, and when the opportunity to coach at SJV came up I went for it. I played at SJV from 1991-1995 so when I had the chance to return as a coach, it was my dream position. To coach where I had played and had the best memories of my high school experience was a really special opportunity.

What has long been a popular finale to several sports’ seasons in New Jersey will cease to exist with the end of this school year. The Tournament of Champions (TOC) consisted of group champions across the state being seeded into a single bracket with one team winning as the overall champion for New Jersey in basketball, cross country, lacrosse, tennis, and indoor/outdoor track for boys, and basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, tennis, indoor/outdoor track, and volleyball for girls. Bowling, fencing, golf, and gymnastics also named an over-all state champion despite not having group championships. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (NJSIAA) Executive Committee voted to eliminate the TOC in order to allow teams greater ability to schedule games in a shorter playing season and have teams end their season as winners, considering New Jersey was the only state to name overall champions in individual sports.

CM: What is it like coaching a team for which you once played? Coach Karpell: I had the most amazing time as a high school athlete while attending SJV. The girls on the team that I played with were my best friends. We still talk and are in each other’s lives today. We played for coaches that coached us and worked really hard with us each day to improve during the season and in the off season (Nick Russo, Bill Bulman, and Brad Hagasen). Looking back on how they coached us, it was really special

because they allowed us to play an athletic, fun style and that was not the norm for girls at the time. Another special part about my time at SJV was the success we had. Obviously we won a lot, but we had so many people from the school community and local community that came to our games and supported us. I have such fond memories of playing in front of soldout crowds in many big games. It was a

special time to play and be a part of our team. CM: How do you feel about the NJSIAA ending the TOC? Coach Karpell: It makes me feel really sad. I have fond memories of playing in the big games as a player. When your team makes it to that tournament you have such a feeling of accomplishment. Being given the opportunity to play at the Meadowlands and to see yourself on the jumbotron was just so special. I also feel extreme disappointment that future players are not going to be able to experience it. There is something to be said that you are the undisputed number one team in the state. And lastly, I feel angry because I have yet to hear a good reason as to why it is being canceled. From a female athlete’s perspective, although our opportunities are growing to make a living on the professional level, we are still not even close to the same level as men. I have read studies that most female athletes will hit their athletic peak in name recognition in high school and college. With rules changing on the high school and NCAA front with NIL (name image and likeness), female athletes have a great opportunity to grow themselves in these highly visible games. Doing away

with the TOC is taking an opportunity away from the girls to be viewed on this platform, to be interviewed, to be photographed, to be treated equally like their male counterparts. As a strong advocate for growing our game and teaching our girls life lessons through sports, this is taking an opportunity away from young females. CM: How has this affected the players? Coach Karpell: To be honest, because of Covid and the tournament being cancelled, we have not had an opportunity to play in a TOC the last two years. Only the senior class would have had a chance to participate, but we lost early in states in 2019 so the entire current team had not had a chance to play in a TOC until now - but I know they really wanted the opportunity to play in it this year. It was the goal of the team to win the last ever TOC. CM: What makes this team special? Coach Karpell: We are the true definition of a team. We currently have a roster of girls that will all go on and play college basketball with as many as 10 being potentially division one players. (Five have committed and three others have offers). So many sacrifice individual recognition and stats to be a part of the team. This is not easy, but our girls are all competitive and trust the coaches to put them in the position to be successful. Sounds easy but it is not, and the girls embrace it for our team to be a national power. CM: The most rewarding part of your career? Coach Karpell: I have often said when I went into coaching I did not think hard about mentoring student-athletes. I thought the position would be more about the stats, but that is only a small part of what goes into coaching. I have found helping the girls get recruited and choose a college that suits them both athletically and academically has been incredibly rewarding. Another rewarding part is seeing the process of them coming in as

freshmen and graduating as seniors. It is so fun to see them develop, mature, and grow into confident young women both on and off the court. On a personal note, I have been able to coach both my daughters in Lady Lancers uniforms. The fact that I get to share this time with my daughters and they get to play on such a great team is unique and really special. Another cool aspect is as an alumna to see your daughters share in the same experiences and be a part of the same school community is special as well. CM: The most challenging part of coaching? Coach Karpell: Disappointment. There are times when a player or team might not achieve the goal that was set. Dealing with the disappointment of that is really hard. Obviously these are life lessons, but when you go through them with a player or a team it is challenging. Finding the right words, or being able to put it into perspective, can be difficult even as an adult. CM: Best coaching tip to share? Coach Karpell: Be honest with your players. If you are honest with your players, and tell them where they stand, and why you feel the way you do, it builds trust. Once a player trusts

you she will do anything you ask her to do. Another tip is that they know that you love them. I tell them all the time I love them, but that is why I am going to coach so hard because I do not just want you to be good, I want you to be great. CM: What do you do when you are not working? Coach Karpell: Besides coaching the ‘big girls’, as I call it in the off-season, I run a youth program called Jersey Shore Elite and I train and coach younger players in grades 3-8. I love being in the gym with the younger girls as they are like little sponges. It is really refreshing and I love to ‘grow the game’ in this way. I find it really rewarding. The other thing my family and I love is to vacation in Disney. We try to go yearly and really enjoy our family time together. It’s fun to escape and do all the theme parks together. CM: Is there anything you would like our readers to know? Coach Karpell: Encourage young girls to start playing and understand that sports build so much in young girls outside of the game. The life skills, relationships, and friendships that are formed are really special and can last a lifetime.

Children learn the judicial system through play

Early Childhood Published Philosophy Hits Nail on the Head Carmine and Phyllis Visone, owners of Home Away From Home Academy, hold a deeply rooted belief that, given the right tools, balanced with the right kind of play and guidance and then delivered during the right stages of development – children would grow into adults who were not only smart academically, but smart in a life sense – children who would grow up to lead productive, abundant lives. With practice and research based theory, the school produces academic success for all students which developmentally prepares them for higher learning, at a younger age. “The Visone Method: A New

Philosophy in Early Childhood Education” fosters an active love of learning by providing experiences that enable all students to achieve a strong foundation during early childhood. It treats every day as a celebration of life and learning, because what a growing child learns today will be with them for a lifetime. The Visone Method is a behaviorist philosophy that builds self-esteem while considering the whole child. It balances music, drama, and motor skill activities with high-level academic learning in a fun environment.

Authors of The Visone Method attend book signing

Over the last several years, Home Away From Home Academy has received many accolades including Township Proclamations, a NJ State Senate Resolution, and an award for their collection of over 800 pounds of food for Fulfill: Students Change Hunger. Additionally, owners Carmine and Phyllis Visone were the recipients of the Humanitarian of the Year award in recognition of the school’s generous donation of toys to Hope for Children Foundation. The school focuses on many charitable efforts as part of their instruction to the children that it is just as important to give as it is to receive.

RFH Lacrosse Coach Begins 19th Season, Looking to Continue Legacy Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School’s Girls Lacrosse Coach, Amy O’Keefe, will began her 19th season coaching the Lady Bulldogs and looks to add to her record-shattering career. O’Keefe began coaching at RFH in the spring of 2004 and has never looked back. She entered the 2022 spring season with a spectacular career coaching record of 307-69-2. Under her leadership and expertise, the Dawgs have secured twelve divisional championships, nine Shore Conference Championships, seven State Sectional Championships, two Group Championships, and have made two appearances in the Tournament of Champions. O’Keefe is a legend among the high school girls lacrosse community in New Jersey. She holds the Shore Conference Record, among all coaches of all sports, all-time, for her 127 game win streak versus Shore Conference opponents and was named the 50th best coach out of 150 Best Shore Conference Girls Lacrosse Coaches All-Time. O’Keefe earned Coach of the Year honors in 2008 & 2010 by the Asbury Park Press; in 2015 by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association; and in 2016 by NJ.com. O’Keefe was also named by NJ.com to RFH’s Mount Rushmore - Greatest of All Time - #4. In her 19 years coaching at RFH, O’Keefe has coached more than 400 student-athletes, has developed a program that has become consistently one of the best in the state, and has navigated uncertainty, ever-challenging, and motivating her team to stay positive through the COVID pandemic over the past two years. In March, O’Keefe looked to begin a season that feels more like “normal” and one that is just as fruitful for her athletes as she has come to expect.

RFH Vice Principal of Athletics and Activities, Chris Lanzalotto reflected on O’Keefe’s legacy. “Coach O’Keefe is an extraordinary coach who always puts her players first. She has been an incredible role model for younger coaches and exemplifies the qualities we look for in our coaching staff.” “I cherish the opportunity I get to coach these amazing girls year after year,” said O’Keefe. “Every season, each team contributes something unique and special to the continued success and winning reputation they have all built and established over time. Their compassion, competitiveness, and will to work hard to fight to keep the fire alive and be the best they can be, inspires me and is something the entire community should be proud of. I know the girls are amped up and ready to work! I was super excited to meet the freshmen, and see where we are as a group, and what we can put together this year to have another successful season. Go Dawgs!”

Rumson Fair Haven High School Seniors and Key Club members Bree Brown, Charlotte Hershey, and Molly O’Connell put their community service requirements to work helping memory care centers in the local area. The trio collected donations to purchase baby dolls and baby blankets in an effort to comfort residents suffering from various types and stages of memory loss after hearing the story of Trudy Foster who died last year. The former resident of Brandywine’s Reflection Unit, Shrewsbury, was a beloved educator in Red Bank and designed dolls. Residents in memory care are comforted by things that remind them of their past, and dolls have the ability to evoke such memories. Brown, Hershey, and O’Connell created a foundation in Trudy’s honor, called Trudy’s Dolls - Love a Little More, and used social media platforms to raise funds. With the generosity of local community members and the support of the RFH Key Club, the girls raised and delivered more than 50 dolls and blankets to Brandywine for distribution throughout Monmouth County. Key Club’s mission is to provide high school students with opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership through participation in acts of service in their communities. For more information on Key Club or for volunteer opportunities for RFH students or future donations to Trudy’s Dolls, please email Key Club advisory Jeremy Schulte at jschulte@rumsonfairhaven.org.

It’s a Classic Comeback Red Bank 5K Charity Run/Walk Returns After 2-Year Pandemic Pause to Support Youth Development Programs for Borough Children

COVID-19 may have sidelined the Red Bank Classic 5K for two years, but the charity event is charging back to downtown Red Bank on Saturday, June 18, 2022, with community fanfare and support for local kids impacted by the pandemic. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited back for the 3.1-mile trek through Red Bank, and area residents are encouraged to cheer them on and gather afterward for a festive block party on Monmouth Street, in the heart of the downtown. “We are delighted to bring the community together again for a family-friendly day of good health, fun activities, and music in downtown Red Bank,” said Angela Courtney, one of the founders of the charity race and owner of Sweetest Sin Boutique on White Street. “We’re also proud to support the good work of our charity partner, the YMCA, which provides a variety of youth development programs to help Red Bank children rebound from the pandemic,” Courtney said. Hosted by the Red Bank Business Alliance and Red Bank RiverCenter, the event raised more than $40,000 in its first two years to benefit programs that nurture the development and well-being of borough youth and teens. “The Red Bank Family YMCA is grateful for the financial support from the Red Bank Classic 5K, especially during these challenging times,” said Laurie Goganzer, President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County, which serves hundreds of Red Bank families. “This year, the 5K donation will fund social-emotional programs to help local children recover from the stresses of the pandemic, as well as underwrite free swim lessons for Red Bank third graders at the Red Bank Y.” Glenn Carter, Executive Director of Red Bank RiverCenter, said area businesses and organizations can help support the community event and its charitable cause by purchasing a sponsorship. Carter said cash and in-kind donations are also welcomed. “The Red Bank Classic 5K is for everyone,” said Carter. “It’s a unique community event that showcases our beautiful downtown and exemplifies our town’s giving spirit and commitment to healthy living.” Race organizers are anticipating an enthusiastic return to the 5K, sanctioned by USA Track & Field (USATF), which also certified the challenging course that will begin and end on Broad Street. It will count as a USATF 2022 NJ Open Women’s Championship Race. The run/walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., following a group warm-up.

Boundless Breath BY MEGAN CALLUS

Endurance Breathing The way you breathe can have a huge impact on sporting performance. If you’re hoping to increase stamina while running, playing pickleball or other exercise, or simply moving more comfortably from room to room and up stairs, there are breathing techniques and tools to help. By altering how you breathe - increasing or decreasing the length and force of the inhalation or exhalation or the pauses in between- you can change the way your body functions. Breathwork can create a more relaxed state, more restful sleep, more energy and focus, or a greater ease while exercising or moving. Just as we strength-train our hamstrings and calves to improve our ability to power over hills, we can tone the muscles used for breathing. When you take a breath, most of the work is done by the diaphragm, that large muscle located between the chest and abdomen. If you

strengthen your diaphragm, you can improve your endurance and be less likely to become fatigued. Interestingly, the most common way both athletes and non-athletes breathe is called “shallow” breathing, where we draw minimal breath into the lungs due to breathing in through the chest instead of the diaphragm. Shallow breathing tricks our bodies into feeling stressed, wastes energy, and takes in less oxygen. Though diaphragmatic breathing may take a little time to get used to, it will help improve your stamina at the gym, on the court, and as you undertake daily physical challenges like carrying groceries up stairs. How To Breathe With Your Diaphragm To begin practicing diaphragmatic breathing, it is best to lie down; this will enable you to feel your diaphragm move. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale through your nose

trying to keep your chest still, letting your belly rise. Every time you breathe in, your belly should fill up like a balloon and every time you breathe out, that balloon should deflate.*

*When concentrating on breathing, you may breathe faster and/or deeper. You may feel worried, dizzy, or light-headed as a result of this. If this happens to you, simply stop practicing until your breathing returns to normal and your symptoms fade.

You can learn more by visiting me at BoundlessBreathNJ.com, attending a class, or coming in for a private session. Happy Breathing! *consult a doctor if you have cardiovascular issues or issues af fecting your breathing
