FATHER’S DAY GIFTS
He Won’t Be Able to Resist
Straight up, dads can be difficult to shop for (sometimes even harder than moms). They are too busy with work meetings or doing the lawn to discuss any gift options, too macho to admit they actually need something or too frugal to have any extra funds spent on their happiness. Well, this Father’s Day tell dad “TOUGH!” Here are some thoughtful ideas and special items you can hand over to the most important man in your life (not just because you are sending him a subliminal message to manscape), but because you love him!
A RELAXING BUZZ
A STATEMENT TIE
Of course daddy knows how to work the chic professional look, but giving him one of these fun, creative ties will classify him as the office trendsetter. From sports to sailing to subtle stripes, he can collect ties for every type of occasion. WHERE TO SHOP: VINEYARD VINES, GROVE WEST, SHREWSBURY (vineyardvines.com)
A SIX PACK
After he finishes his abs workout, let dad flex his other six pack. This cool beer tote is perfect for BYO’s, barbeques and bonfires at the beach. WHERE TO SHOP: THE PAPERY OF SHREWSBURY, THE GROVE (thepapery.com)
A MANICURE
Even though he may deny his nails need to be trimmed and his cuticles need to be cut, throw in the fact that his treatment includes soaking his hardworking hands in warm water and a light massage, he’ll be clawing for this generous gift certificate. Make Nails Plus papa’s go-to spot for well-earned pampering. WHERE TO SHOP: NAILS PLUS, RED BANK, LITTLE SILVER, SHREWSBURY, COLTS NECK (nailsplusspa.com)
Shower him with a classic cut and a soothing shave at this popular upscale barbershop. From a beard trim to a Sweeney Todd, there is no doubt dad will look dapper for his special day. WHERE TO SHOP: OLD WORLD SHAVING PARLOR, RED BANK (oldworldshavingparlor.com)
A LEISURE SPORT
Help pop maintain his dad bod by perfecting his swing on the tennis court or carve turns on the slopes. From rackets to snowboards to balls to goggles - this local sports shop has tons of gear to add to his athletic arsenal. WHERE TO SHOP: THE SPORT SPOT, SHREWSBURY (thesportspotnj.com)
A FULLY LOADED TRUCK
Drive this pint size F-150 RC Raptor up to dad’s driveway and watch him transform from disciplined adult to daring teen. This fast, performance truck has all the bells and whistles to keep dad entertained. Great News: He won’t get a ticket for speeding. WHERE TO SHOP: HOBBYMASTERS, RED BANK (hobbymasters.com)
A TRENDY HAT
Whether he is doing the bills, walking the dog, or manning the grill, hand dad this trendy thinking cap to keep his head protected and stylin’. This ultra cool mesh trucker hat lets anyone know this boss means business. WHERE TO SHOP: GREENLINES, FAIR HAVEN (greenlines.com)
A DAY OF HORSING AROUND
Show dad he is a winner. Enjoy time together at the track at Monmouth Park. All men receive a complimentary betting voucher with paid admission. The family can enjoy the races, lunch, live music and enter a local sports lottery to win tickets to see his favorite team. WHERE TO SHOP: MONMOUTH PARK, OCEANPORT (monmouthpark.com)
A CLASSIC ACCESSORY
Let pops know this Father’s Day he’s “On the BALL” with this Trainmaster Officer Manual 44MM Gray Face BALL Watch with sapphire caseback, manual caliber on genuine alligator brown leather strap. WHERE TO SHOP: J. VINCENT JEWELERS, COLTS NECK (jvincent.com)

Generations of Service Maurice Schwartz ( Jon’s grandfather and Jay’s great grandfather) opened the doors of his automotive store on Maple Avenue in Red Bank in 1919 selling trucks.
The West Front Street in Red Bank location was the family’s longest – 50 years. (photo circa 1950s)

ou’ve probably watched one of their TV commercials many times, the familiar sound of “May the Schwartz be with you” followed by the smiling faces of Jon Schwartz and his brother Jim in front of a car. But what you may not know is the legacy of service and community involvement the Schwartz family, of Schwartz Mazda in Shrewsbury, has in Monmouth County. Jon and his son, Jay, run the business today but it was Jon’s grandfather who set the pace and gave an example for his family to follow while forever helping to shape the town of Red Bank.
After being discharged for his service in World War I, Maurice Schwartz opened the doors of his automotive store on Maple Avenue in Red Bank in 1919 selling trucks. His first priority was customer service and he was known to mail his customers survey letters with a penny attached, titled, "A Penny for Your Thoughts". Maurice became well known for asking the question, “Does service count?” And he used his commitment not only for his business, but for the community at large. In 1928, Maurice was one of the original members to sign the charter for the

Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce in Red Bank, he was also one of the earliest members of the Rotary Club of Red Bank and served as President in 1934. But in between, as the Great Depression hit and many businesses and banks collapsed, Maurice worked tirelessly to save the Red Bank community. The Merchants Trust of Red Bank was to close its doors, leaving many with no money and no way to eat or pay their bills. Maurice used his influence and gathered his friends and together they formed a Reopening Committee that saved the bank and their community at large. Today the bank is PNC. During this time Maurice added the Chrysler/Plymouth and International Trucks lines to his business. Although in his fifties, when World War II hit Maurice attempted to enlist. He wrote letter after letter until finally being commissioned by General Omar Bradley and served in the China-India area during the war. He used his vast automotive experience and oversaw the assembly and management of 101,000 vehicles used in battle. When he returned home he was anxious to help his fellow veterans ease their financial burdens and implemented

a car-buying agreement that allowed them to pay in weekly installments versus paying the total upfront. By this time the business had moved to West Front Street and now included his two sons, Arnold and Edward. It would remain at that location in Red Bank for more than 50 years. Arnold, a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a veteran of World War II, followed in his father’s footsteps and served as President of the Rotary Club of Red Bank in 1983. His son, Jon, would go on to complete the same service as President in 2004 making the family one of only a handful of Rotarians with fatherson such legacies. Jon’s son, Jay, now serves as a fourth generation Rotarian and continues the family’s commitment to the Club motto "Service Above Self". Both Arnold’s sons, Jon and Jim, joined the family business in the 1970s after attending Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft and Syracuse University and Clemson University, respectively. In 1975 the Mazda brand was added, and soon after the brothers were making commercials with the new tagline, "May the
Left to right: Jim, Arnold, Edward and Jon Schwartz in the 1970’s
Schwartz be with you!" The business continued to grow, as did the philanthropic activity of the family, and in 2000 the company was moved to its present location in Shrewsbury. Jon’s son, Jay, has joined the family business and is now the Vice President after having worked as a janitor, mechanic, and sales associate. While attending Northeastern University, where he received a BS in accounting and finance, his father encouraged him to pursue other interests, perhaps something outside the automotive industry. “I tried to get Jay to do something other than cars. This is not an easy business,” Jon shares. “But it’s in his blood, I guess. Jay brings a lot of new and exciting views and modern processes to our business. Fourth generation at the dealership, fourth generation at Rotary, it’s just the Schwartz way.” The past few years have offered the Schwartz family several challenges both professionally and personally. “In 2009 Chrysler faced corporate bankruptcy and they dropped our dealership,” Jon explains. “We never saw it coming because we were one of their top dealerships in the Northeast. But we weathered the storm. It wasn’t always easy, and we had some lean times, but we stayed true to what our father and grandfather taught us. We know service does matter and now things are better than ever. We have the best customers in the world and maybe that’s why we’ve received so many awards.” The family’s greatest heartache came a few years later when, in 2015, Jim lost his battle to cancer. Schwartz Mazda continues Jim’s legacy and philanthropic efforts, and supports all the same charities Jim did, as well as having established the James L. Schwartz Scholarship Fund at Christian Brothers Academy. “That’s still very raw,” Jon says. “Losing my brother was horrible. Especially for my mother, Ethel Schwartz, who recently passed herself. She has an interesting story too. She was the daughter of Jonas Tumen, the Monmouth County Prosecutor from 1930 -1933 and she was one of the founders of the KaBoom! fireworks display in Red Bank. I guess my family has been around a long time, and to think it all started with Maurice who only had a sixth-grade education. Education was so important to him – education, service, community and giving back. It’s what he taught us.”

Moving with Karen... As a licensed REALTOR®, I have been helping people buy and sell homes for over 12 years and prior to this, I was a licensed title agent. Every day I am asked questions regarding all different aspects of Real Estate. I pride myself on being able to honestly answer those questions and if I can’t, I’ll happily find the answer! I feel educated clients are best able to make decisions that will have such an impact on their lives. They deserve an agent who is not only knowledgeable, but is able to offer real insights and guidance. Each month, I will address real estate issues, and I welcome your questions.
Treating YOUR MOVE with care
Is there a difference between a REALTOR® and a real estate agent? People use the terms REALTOR® and real estate agent interchangeably, but that is incorrect. Not every real estate agent is a REALTOR® although both are licensed to sell real estate.
KAREN MOSES
REALTOR®, ABR, e-PRO,CRS
c 732.687.8426 o 732.842.3200
The main difference is that a REALTOR® must subscribe to the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. The 17 Code Articles are strictly enforced by local real estate boards. The standards hold REALTORS® to a moral and ethical code that is enforced beyond state guidelines governing agents who simply hold a real estate license. While there is no evidence nor guarantee that all REALTORS® are ethically better than unaffiliated real estate agents, it is an attempt by the industry to regulate, and deserves recognition. Nikolas Swidryk Selected for Junior Dream Team of U.S. Archers Nikolas Swidryk, a junior at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, has “hit the mark” as a recurve archer and is now closer to his dream of Olympic glory. It has been announced that Nikolas is one of just 18 male athletes selected for the 2017 Junior Dream Team consisting of the top cadet and junior Olympic recurve archers in the country. The Junior Dream Team ( JDT) program was created to develop archers who show potential into top level shooters with the goal of making an Olympic or international team. Athletes selected for the Junior Dream Team are evaluated at a yearly camp and chosen based on a number of criteria including individual scores, teamwork, work ethic, progress at camps, motivation, grasp of the National Training System, potential, ability to maintain a positive attitude, ethics, and ability to make form changes. Past graduates of the team include 2016 team silver medalist Zach Garrett, 2016 Olympian Mackenzie Brown, and 2012 Olympian Miranda Leek as well as several World Archery Youth Championship Team members and several USA Archery resident athletes. Nikolas is a currently a member of two archery clubs, WA-XO-BE Archers and Two River Archers. He has been shooting for three years -- beginning in the summer of 2014 before the start of his freshman year at RFH – and says that he has had many great experiences as a result. “One of the best things about this sport for me is the places I’ve been able to travel to,” Nikolas said. “I’ve been all over, whether it be down south in Harrisonburg, Virginia and Decatur, Alabama or out west in Salt Lake City, Utah and San Diego, California. Each new state has given me

memories that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.” Another aspect of the sport Nikolas enjoys is meeting fellow athletes, including Olympians. “As a result of traveling to so many national competitions, I’ve been able to meet several Olympians -the most unforgettable one being Jacob Wukie, team silver medalist in the London 2012 Olympics, at James Madison University back in March 2016,” said Nikolas. “I remember picking him out of the large crowd of shooters that day, and all I could think was ‘Wow, that’s really Jacob!’ But what surprised me the most was how nice he was; as I eagerly approached him and asked him for a picture, he smiled and replied without hesitation saying he would be more than happy to.” Nikolas’ achievements also include a recent 1st place finish in the New Jersey State Indoor championships, giving him the title of number one in the state for the Olympic recurve cadet division. He also received a bronze medal in 2016 at the JOAD National Indoor Championships in the Olympic recurve cadet division at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He is currently ranked as one the top 20 cadets in the country in the indoor rankings, and in the top 30 cadets in the outdoor rankings. Nikolas hopes to continue his archery career once he graduates from RFH, and has hopes of eventually being able to represent the U.S. by making an Olympic team. Seventeen-year-old Nikolas is the son of Michelle and Dr. John Swidryk of Fair Haven.
KidzSpeed.com and Rumson School District, Racing Toward a Brighter Future A gifted and talented student whose IQ is measured at 147, Christian Rutty of Rumson is equally at home in a classroom, science or computer lab, as he is at a race track. A 5th grader at Forrestdale School, Christian enjoys 7th grade math, the periodic table of elements, chemistry and string theory physics. In 2016, Christian was chosen as a contestant on LifeTime TV’s, Child Genius, Season 2. Due to film scheduling conflicts, his family deferred. Christian Rutty is also a 10-year-old champion F1 Sprint Go Kart racer. In 2011, Christian began karting at the age of 5 1/2 after seeing the Baltimore Grand Prix Indy Race. Christian has competed in races in New York, North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Florida and has a racing coach/ tuner who travels with him. Christian has won many regional races and is ranked Top 10 in the US amongst drivers. His two Go Karts, which are nothing like an amusement park karts, reach speeds as fast as 70 MPH. Christian says, “Few people know about karting, yet all professional racers got their start in this sport.” Each summer, Christian attends simulator training in Indianapolis, IN where the Indy 500 drivers train. Christian says, “The level of precision, focus and concentration required
in karting is incredible. The difference between winner and loser is often less than 3/10 of a second per lap. Remember, we’re only 9-, 10- and 11- year olds making split second decisions at high speeds with laser-like focus.” His syndicated website and social media page, KidzSpeed.com, features interviews with other kids, professional racers and celebrities. His most recent interviews were youngest Indy 500 racer, Sage Karam and JetManDubai.com. He is also a featured character in the Apple Store game, “Kart Stars”. Christian will continue competing in go karts until age 14, where he will likely transition into a Formula 2000 race car. He finds it ironic that by then he will have raced at speeds of over 100 MPH and he won’t attain a driver’s license for at least two more years. Christian hopes to major in Engineering at Harvard, MIT or Stanford and one day become a Formula 1, Indy or the new (electric, street class) Formula-E racer when he grows up. His idol is champion, African-British, F1 racer, Lewis Hamilton whom Christian resembles. Christian is a strong advocate for STEM education. He wanted to use his racing efforts to highlight STEM education and programs in the Rumson school district and encourage other kids to pursue their dreams.
Local in Need of Kidney Tom Nardini, who is known for his philanthropic work for Robert Wood Johnson in East Brunswick, St. Mary’s Church in Colts Neck, ALS, MS, juvenile diabetes, and the Parker Clinic in Red Bank, is in need of a kidney transplant. Tom has a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the kidneys and is looking for an immediate donor. If you are willing to be tested as a donor match, call either his son Tom at 732.567.8945 or the Kidney Institute at 212.746.3922. You may keep your donation anonymous should you choose. Nicole Stefano, Tom’s daughter, explains the surgery is no longer radical and normally is done through a non-invasive laparoscopic procedure. The family has been tested, and for various reasons, are unsuitable matches. Tom has always been a big proponent of organ donations and taught his children at young ages the importance of checking the box for donations on their licenses. The difficulty with kidney donations is that the donation must come from a living, healthy donor and there is a seven-to-ten year waiting list for a kidney.

Shrewsbury’s
Aidan Stevenson
Selected for Elite Skim USA Team WHEN LIFELONG SHREWSBURY RESIDENT Aidan Stevenson was five-years-old, he picked up a skimboard for the first time. By age 6, he was skimboarding competitively, and regularly bringing home first-place trophies at local contests such as the Sea Bright SkimBash. Today, at age 13, Aidan travels to Skim USA Pro/Am contests all along the East Coast, and has won the tour title for his division four years in a row. Every year, he also brings his talents to Laguna Beach, CA, to compete in The Vic, a prestigious contest sponsored by Victoria Skimboards. Aidan recently took his skimboarding achievements to an even higher level: He was selected to represent the Boys Division on the Skim USA team, an elite group of skimboarders at the top of their game, both in and out of the water. Skim USA board members select the annual team based on style, attitude, performance, and contest standings.
Aidan and the 2017 Skim USA team will soon travel to compete in an international skimboarding contest. While Aidan is a natural athlete – when he’s not skimboarding, he is playing lacrosse, surfing, or snowboarding - he attributes some of his success to Jersey Shore Skim Camp, which he has attended every summer since its inception in 2009. The Sea Bright-based training program helps Aidan develop and sharpen his skimboarding skills, and the professional instructors provide support and advice on competition strategies. During the year, Aidan attends the Rumson Country Day School. But come summer, you’ll find him on local beaches, riding the waves. Want to catch Aidan in action? He will be competing in the local Skim USA Pro/Am tour contest–the Sea Bright SkimBash on June 24-25, 2017.
as well as completing three “IronMan” Competitions in Lake Placid, NY.
THE 8TH ANNUAL KIDS TRIATHLON for Bob Kelleher will be held on June 11, 2017 at Victory Park in Rumson. Exercising, having fun with the kids and helping others to reach their goals and potential are all part of Bob Kelleher’s legacy and the spirit in which this race has been founded. This race is held in memory of Bob Kelleher, a Rumson resident who passed away unexpectedly in July 2009. This event is particularly appropriate to honor Bob, as it conveys some of the passions that were so much a part of his daily life. To name a few, Bob was an avid triathlete, participating in numerous local races

Another important passion of Bob’s was his enthusiasm for volunteering. He regularly coached his son and local children in several Rumson Recreation sports. When Bob passed away he was the Captain of the Rumson First Aid Squad, where he had been an active volunteer since 2003. The proceeds for this race will be donated to The Rumson First Aid Squad and Stephy’s Pace, a nonprofit organization in Red Bank that supports those suffering from grief and loss. Race categories will be: 9 to 14 year olds: 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike and 1-mile run; 8 and under: 75-yard swim, 2.25-mile bike and ½ mile run; and 2 to 4 year olds: a two-loop balance bike on Lafeyette Street Space is limited, for more information and to register, visit RaceForum.com/KidsTri today.

Little Silver Kitchen Tour a Success M o r e T h a n 5 0 0 V i e w t h e B e s t K i t c h e n s i n To w n
The sun was shining as the doors were opened to nine of Little Silver’s most exceptional kitchens at the Little Silver Kitchen Tour, sponsored by the Little Silver PTO. More than 500 visitors from near and far got an inside look at not only the beauty and function of these kitchens, but also the talents of area builders, decorators, florists, and the culinary delights from some of Monmouth County’s finest chefs. The Parker Homestead was the starting point of the Tour, where guests browsed and shopped goods from retailers at the Red Barn Boutique, housed in the newly renovated barns on the property. From there, the tour fanned out to kitchens throughout the town from expansive properties overlooking the Shrewsbury River, to a refurbished 19th Century Victorian home, and even the entire home of House of Cline designer Amanda Haytaian. “We were so happy with how everything came together,” said Eileen Savko, co-chair of the Tour. Kelly Boyer, co-chair echoed the sentiment “We couldn’t have asked for a better day to showcase our town, to work with exceptional homeowners, volunteers, vendors, underwriters, sponsors and friends. Everyone involved helped to make The Little Silver Kitchen Tour such a memorable event.” The 2017 Little Silver Kitchen Tour would not have been possible without tour underwriter, Nemo Tile and Stone, the support of Monmouth Medical Center Foundation RWJ Barnabas Health, House of Cline Design, Builders’ General Supply Company, Almasy Law, Allied Building, The Parker Homestead-1665, Community Magazine, Design NJ, Sickles Market, Solari Creative, Little Silver Police Department, as well as the local community and area businesses. Information on all the participants on the tour can be found at www.littlesilverkitchentour.com. We encourage you to support the businesses that supported the tour. Proceeds from the Kitchen Tour support the Little Silver PTO’s mission to enhance the educational experience of children by providing curriculum based enrichment activities, exposure to cultural arts, and programming that supports character development.

My job is about my family, my friends and my community. I live here – so reliable power is important to me.
Meet Greg. He’s a Lineman 1st Class and has been Energizing New Jersey for more than 16 years. You’ve likely seen Greg outdoors, on the line – regardless of the heat, the cold or the harsh weather conditions. That’s because he’s dedicated to ensuring reliable energy for JCP&L customers. Of course, Greg is used to the outdoors. In fact, he prefers it. Greg grew up in New Jersey surfing on Monmouth County beaches, boating locally and playing ice hockey on area rinks – three activities that he, along with his family, still enjoys today. Greg is proud to be part of your hometown energy team. www.jcp-l.com

MONMOUTH PARK CHARITY FUND CELEBRATES
Kentucky Derby Day The fourteenth annual Kentucky Derby Day celebration sponsored by Monmouth Park Charity Fund was held on May 6, 2017 in the outdoor garden of the Blu Grotto Ristorante located at Monmouth Park Racetrack. Tickets to this highlyanticipated event sold out two weeks prior to the actual event. In attendance were 370 guests, which included members of the military. Longtime supporter of the Monmouth Park Charity Fund Ray Catena was the Event Sponsor. Event Chair Marilyn Lloyd, CoChair Maria Tanzola, and an amazing committee of 25 people presented a special evening that included simulcasting of the Kentucky Derby with betting available; an open bar; and food specialties made by Blu Grotto’s Chef John Corona. A hat parade and contest was also held, as well as live, silent and chance auctions. Honorary Co-Chairs were Tom Donovan, president and publisher of the Asbury Park Press and Phil Villapiano, former linebacker for the Oakland Raiders. Donovan was MC for the live auction and helped to raise more than $27,000. This year’s honorees were OceanFirst Bank (accepted by Christopher Mayer); Valerie Montecalvo, owner and CEO of Bayshore Recycling Corporation; Anthony Abbatiello, a decorated war veteran of the Korean War and Harness Racing Hall of Famer; and The Tigger House Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to achieving a positive impact by reducing the death rate of heroin and opiate addiction, started by Rick and Lisa Stavola. Monmouth Park Charity Fund Director of Operations Debi Heptig noted that the organization is 71 years old and since its inception over 9.3 million dollars has been given to local nonprofits. “Success of this event, while incredibly fun and one of the most revered parties of the year, ultimately will define how many grants we can give out to our non-profit organizations. It’s an exciting and important event.”

The Parker Homestead-1665 Open House & Old Time Base Ball League Take a step back in time on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when The Parker Homestead-1665 will open for tours, and will host a vintage Base Ball game at 1:00 p.m. The game, which recreates Base Ball as it was played by mid-19th century rules, will take place next to The Parker Homestead-1665 at the Little Silver Sickles Field. Both are free to the public. Come take a step back in time just like Kevin Costner did in “Field of Dreams” when The Parker Homestead-1665 hosts the vintage baseball game, which matches New Jersey’s Monmouth Furnace from Allaire, against the New York Mutuals. The teams will be wearing reproduction mid-19th century period uniforms, using oldfashioned equipment and playing by 1864 Beadle’s rules. Preceding the game, players from the vintage leagues will speak to younger players from the Little Silver Recreation Baseball League about baseball history and playing by the Beadle’s 1864 rules. The 17th century Parker Homestead – which is one of the oldest residences in New Jersey and is on both the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places, will be open for tours from 10:30 – 4 p.m. On display will be the collection of 1909 Caramel Candy Company baseball cards found in the Parker belongings along with Doug Parker’s 1925 Wilson baseball mitt.
Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. In 1665 siblings Peter and Joseph Parker and Meribeth Parker Slocum and her husband, lured by the prospect of religious freedom and free land, arrived in our area with the first European settlers to claim property available from the King’s proprietors to all who would help establish British communities. Eight generations and 330 years later, Julia Parker deeded The Parker Homestead to the people of Little Silver. Her intent was that it be preserved forever as a living historic and educational site, especially focused on providing future generations with pride in their history and knowledge of the past through educational programs, cultural events, and museum displays. The homestead and barn renovations are the result of the combined efforts of the Borough of Little Silver and The Parker Homestead-1665, Inc. (a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that encourages and guides the restoration and use of The Parker Homestead) and the Monmouth County Historical Commission which has given supportive grants to fund restoration projects. The borough and non-profit organization have worked closely together since the property was first deeded to the borough in creating the historic preservation of the site.
The Borough of Fair Haven will be celebrating “Fair Haven Day” on Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. to the conclusion of the fireworks. This year will be Fair Haven’s 105th anniversary! The music will be provided by River Road Band and The Pat Roddy Band. Food options will include a picnic by Brennan’s, Seafood from Lusty Lobster, and desserts from Booskerdoo. As in the past, the Foundation of Fair Haven, which is a 501C-3 not for profit - tax exempt charity, has been raising funds to help offset the cost of the Fair Haven Day activities. If anyone is interested in helping to directly fund this community wide celebration, The Foundation of Fair Haven has a variety of Fair Haven Day sponsorships, which are available to both individual residents and companies. Please contact the Foundation of Fair Haven member, Marie Noglows at marie.noglows@comcast.net if you are interested in sponsoring this fine annual event. Finally, the Fair Haven Business Association will be sponsoring many fun attractions at Fair Haven Day, including face painting and more. Tickets will be sold at foundationoffairhaven.org or you can purchase tickets at Borough Hall.

DIVORCE TALK: HAVE A PIZZA!

My friend Tony at Colts Neck Pizza, got me thinking last month. He joked, “I have a complaint. I read your articles, but you never say…have a pizza.” As I ate my pizza that evening, I thought about what he said. It made a lot of sense. Divorce is stressful even in the more amicable splits. When the acrimony is extreme, stress levels can skyrocket. People deal differently with stress. Some lose weight. Others gain weight. Difficulty sleeping or concentrating are frequent side effects. Irritability, raw nerves, or depression can occur. The list of symptoms is a long one. Mental health and medical professionals often advise that taking care of yourself physically can help you cope with the emotional aspects of stress. In turn, taking care of your mental health can help with its physical manifestations. For instance, doing your best to adhere to a schedule often helps you cope with the uncertainty inherent in divorce. Resolve to

eat three meals a day at about the same time each day. That will help you to avoid binge eating or force you to eat, even a little. If you can discipline yourself to stay on schedule, you will very likely see positive results. Go to bed the same time every night. Turn off the television. If you need a sleep aid, do what I do. Pick up a book. It works every time. Calculate your bedtime so you can get at least seven hours per night. Regular exercise can help to burn nervous energy. You don’t have to run a marathon or climb a mountain. Start slowly. Walking is a good place to begin. Increase your exercise as you can. You’ll feel the difference almost immediately. Exercise can create the “good tired” that comes from physical activity and should replace the fatigue that comes with stress. Exercise will help you sleep better and longer. When you feel better physically, you’ll surely feel better mentally. And when you feel better mentally, you’ll reduce the likelihood that the

stress of the divorce will result in bad eating, sleeping, or other habits. The comfort of friends and relatives who can provide emotional support, but who can also help you get interested in things other than your divorce can be invaluable. It stands to reason that you probably won’t ever be able to get the divorce completely out of your mind, but helpful diversions can provide much needed rest from mental fatigue. Of course, everyone is different and the same things don’t work for everyone. There are times when you need a reward, an immediate lift to your spirits, when only a very specific remedy will do. It can be an ice cream cone or a piece of chocolate cake. Or, as Tony says, “Have a pizza!”

Father & Son Dedicated to Justice For the Locascio family, helping is not only a career choice but a way of life. Retired Judge Louis Locascio and his son, Anthony, both work at the law firm of Gold, Albanese, Barletti & Locascio in Red Bank and both spend their days in search of justice and fairness under the law. “My father taught me how to practice law at the dining room table when I was a boy. It was there I would watch him tirelessly work on cases for his clients,” Tony says. “The highest work ethic is essential to helping people the way we do. This is the greatest gift my father gave me.” The former Judge, board certified by the Supreme Court of NJ as both a civil and criminal trial attorney, retired from the New Jersey Superior Court after sitting in the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions for a total of seventeen years. Now heading up the Dispute Resolution Department at the firm, Judge Locascio has an unsurpassed record of settling more than 90% of the cases that come before him. Because of his extensive experience, he has been retained by both plaintiff and defense attorneys to mediate and/or arbitrate civil and family law matters. Tony, strictly interested in helping hurt people obtain justice, began trying cases before judges and juries in 1999 and became a partner at the firm this past January. He is one of only a few attorneys that is board certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey in civil trial practice. “We are humans helping humans. Too often the public is needlessly endangered by other people or companies,” Tony shares. “As a result, they get seriously injured and are left not just with pain but with worry, fear, and frustration. I am honored and devoted to helping them.” A graduate of Fairfield University and of Seton Hall University School of Law, Tony began his career by serving as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Douglas Hague who governed the medical malpractice calendar for Middlesex County. He handles cases where people have been hurt in motor vehicle accidents, serious falls because of dangerous conditions, defective products, medical and nursing home negligence, and construction accidents. Multiple cases he has handled have received statewide attention via reported results in “New Jersey Law Journal,” and “Verdict Search.” Most recently one of his cases was featured in the “New Jersey Law Journal” as the third top settlement in New Jersey in 2015. “I have pride and respect for what Tony has become as a son and as a lawyer, in that order,” Judge Locascio says. “I love the law and it’s a father’s dream to be doing what you love with your son.” Enjoying the art of teaching, Tony frequently gives seminars to a variety of different audiences. He has spoken to local schools discussing the legal implications of bullying, and the responsibilities of investigating abused children and DYFS involvement. For more than fifteen years he has studied and taught the art and science of body language, lecturing and training law students, practicing attorneys, prosecutors, police officers, and judges. He has been featured on numerous TV shows, including on CNN as a body language expert on “Prime News with Vinnie Politan” as well as on “Erin Burnett OutFront” as an expert called to analyze the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Former Secretary Hillary Clinton.

Finally, Help With Computers Story: LiliAnn Paras
Aren’t computers frustrating? The most unflappable among us are known to “lose it” when data is lost, photos disappear, programs won’t open and spam invades. The frustration is exacerbated by long waits in big box stores or on help lines, confusing instructions and long turnaround times. An easy solution happens to be right in your own neighborhood. Meet Tom Bull, a resident of Fair Haven for 25 years, and owner of Two River Computer (TRC) in Fair Haven since 2006. Their thoughtful and personalized service is simply not available in big stores. TRC offers home pick up and delivery, on-premises and in-shop repairs, loaner devices, repairs through remote access and quick turnaround times. TRC is not beholden to any particular brand but are dealers for Dell, HP and Lenovo and are also Microsoft and Apple certified. Emergencies and individual needs are also accommodated and each customer is set up in a ticketing process, allowing the staff to provide updates and create a record of the repair history. With a gleam in his eye, Tom summed up the difference between his store and the big box operations this way. “With TRC, clients have one throat to choke,” - his. In the rare cases when something doesn’t go as planned, customers always know Tom is available to make it right. Saying “yes” is policy and data recovery is especially rewarding. Tom showed me a computer shell filled with sand, shells and scraps. It belonged to a man in his eighties who brought it in after SuperStorm Sandy. The man’s wife had recently passed and he was frantic to save the photos stored on the computer. Tom devised all kinds of homemade gadgets and was able to recover the photos, and that success is one that stays with him. TRC specializes in computer repairs, and it also provides unique related services for homes and small businesses. It currently focuses on three initiatives for homes: WiFi, Turbo Upgrades, and Parental Controls. With the increasing number of devices dependent on WiFi like computers, sprinklers, baby monitors, cameras and more - speed, coverage, and security are compromised. As Tom puts it, “wireless is a game of inches,” and within homes there are often dead spots. With new WiFi technology, TRC can provide a blanket, speedy and safe access for any size home, reaching outdoor areas too. Installation requires no disruption or opening of walls. Tom is impressed with the technology, remarking, “Every time I put one of the systems in, I am amazed at how good it is - every time.” Turbo Upgrades are for those aging, but favorite computers. Tom noted, “Computers have a personality specific to the owners. For example, customers like where the icons are and want to keep the information familiar to them. Slow computers are given ‘computer adrenaline’ and as long as they have ‘good bones’, even old computers can be updated and kept out of the landfill.” TRC can also install parental controls which go far beyond mere filters. Imagine limiting your child’s access, setting the amount of time allowed on specific sites or pausing the internet, all from your phone. TRC can make this a reality and can also install intrusion prevention software and hardware for businesses.
Left to Right: Senior Technician Kevin Karinja, Brian Ericson, Phyllis Sauer, Joe Agresta, Kevin “K2” Ibanez and owner Tom Bull
When Tom is not working, he devotes a lot of time volunteering in the community, along with his sons Alex, 23 and TJ, 17 and his wife, Marybeth, who is director of development for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in Asbury Park. They are often joined in their efforts by the “Fair Haven 5” - a group of five families who raised their sons together in town since the boys were in second grade. They can be seen serving at the Fireman’s Fair and Fair Haven Day. Supporting BBBS is especially dear to them and the Bull family “eats and breathes BBBS and lives from event to event.” The Fair Haven 5 is right there to pitch in. If you have any questions about or frustrations with your computers or systems, stop in or call Two River Computer. You won’t be disappointed and you will discover why it has been voted “Best of the Best” for 2015 and 2016.

heir story is one of resiliency, community outreach and a passion for enriching the lives of others. Tom Zapcic and DonnaLyn Giegerich have been together for over 30 years and those years have been spent creating; creating awardwinning businesses, ways to serve others, inspiration and encouragement. Their lives are filled with art, words and stories of making a difference. They live lives bigger than themselves. They are the inspiration behind Kick Cancer Overboard, an organization that was created to send those who have been affected by cancer on an allexpense paid cruise. Tom and DonnaLyn host ‘Yoga on the Lake’ in their serene backyard during the summer months, to relieve business and corporate stresses for executives – and anyone else that wants to join. DonnaLyn is a nationally known motivational speaker with a passion to help others improve their leadership lives. Tom is a talented photographer who gives of his skill to philanthropic organizations. As a couple, they work both individually

and together, lending their talents to be a change in the world.
“Tom and I are so aware of the fragility of life,” DonnaLyn shared as she told of how they now live their lives in the spirit of trying. At the end of the cancer battle, they came out the other side and said to each other, “Let's leverage all our giftedness, our talents and our networks and let’s create paradigms that let us help other people have fun through a cancer crisis or really any wellness crisis.”
DonnaLyn and Tom have been community-minded from the start, living in health and productivity with a zest for life. When they found themselves facing their own personal health battles, they saw it as call to action for them to do, be and give more. “It was our dual cancer couple crisis that propelled us to This was followed up redirect both our professional with a simple question and personal lives in ways from longtime friend that empower others,” and client, Ted Friedli. DonnaLyn explains. what will your “What can we do with Tom described it as “we legacy be, how do this?” he asked them. were living vibrant lives you want to live Seeing the resilience beforehand, and in an of Tom and DonnaLyn, instant it was as though out the rest of Ted knew that through someone poured gas on your life? their trail, something it, lit a match and said let’s good could come from it. see what you can do.” Instead That question sparked the of extinguishing that fire, flame that grew into creation - Kick DonnaLyn and Tom decided to take their individual talents, their desire to get Cancer Overboard. “There were so many out of their comfort zones to learn about laudable organizations out there, but none others and those flames to light more fires, that sends those affected by cancer to laugh their butts off and not have to worry pouring what they had into others.

“
about a thing,” DonnaLyn said with regard to the void that Kick Cancer Overboard fills in the world of charitable organizations. To date, Kick Cancer Overboard has sent 225 New Jersey families on free cruises. These vacations are all expenses paid from door-to-door, not a dime out of pocket. DonnaLyn and Tom praise the board of directors as they tell of all the fabulous experiences this organization has created. They glow as they tell the stories of the families they have had the opportunity to bless. Kick Cancer Overboard has sent families to sea with the intent to create memories, memorialize a loved one, take a break from the battle, to celebrate, to honeymoon and to just have the rest and relaxation that a cancer diagnosis can quickly steal. Tom says it best. “We can't change their journey... but we can at least give them a break from it.” DonnaLyn's and Tom’s lives are full. They are blessed to have the opportunity of freedom that comes along with being business owners. They work daily maintaining and growing their insurance business, fitting in what Tom calls “pencil possibilities” – numerous activities to be a part of every day, from sponsored events to fundraisers for Kick Cancer Overboard and other worthy causes, and networking socials, to name a few. They fill up their calendars with places to be and things to do, keeping every day different, always doing something new. As a couple, when they just want to be simply DonnaLyn and Tom, they can be found at their favorite Monmouth County dinner spots - Tommy’s Tap and Tavern in Sea Bright, Salt Creek Grill in Rumson or McCloone’s Rum Runner in Sea Bright. They are sure to reserve Friday nights for quiet time at home to walk their dogs – Hanna and Hank - or surround themselves with nature their backyard provides. But mostly they are out and about. Even their vacations are working vacations. Taking turns, they travel to exciting locations; Tom to teach pickle ball and DonnaLyn to teach yoga. On the rare occasion their vacations aren’t work-involved, they are filled with action and adventure. Their current focus is for this October where they will be joining in the MMy Ride for a Cure Across America cycling event. This event offers cyclists a way to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). DonnaLyn and Tom will be jumping in to finish out the last 62 miles of the event. Tom says it’s not about the bucket list any more, it’s just the list now. It’s what will you do today to make a difference, not about what you will do before you die. They hope through their story they encourage others to do the same, that it gives a call to action. They want to see others getting involved, not waiting for a crisis to propel them to make a difference. Getting outside of yourself is where you find contentment and satisfaction of life. They ask, “What will your legacy be, how do you want to live out the rest of your life?” DonnaLyn and Tom live each day focused on how they can make a difference and how they aspire to drive others to do the same. They invite you to “jump aboard our mission to help others.” To find out more about how you can be involved, visit www. donnalynspeaks.com and www.kickcanceroverboard.com.

THE FARMING OF THE FUTURE HAS ARRIVED Back when Ronald Reagan was President, Epcot in Disney World had an exhibit dedicated to the future world of aeroponic agriculture. I remember going past the towers of produce in one of the tram cars and wondering how they imagined growing vegetables free of dirt or soil of any kind. The theory was air and water could grow a better vegetable without the need for pesticides. Aeroponic growth refers to growth achieved in an air culture, with the basic principle being to grow plants in a closed or semiclosed environment by spraying the plant’s roots with a nutrient rich solution that provides the needed hydration and oxygen. Aeroponic research became increasingly popular in the 1980s as NASA led the field, believing the process would allow for the growth of plants in space. It all seemed very futuristic then, but time has proven the process to be the most efficient growing method in terms of energy and resources…and some would argue taste. The future of agriculture has come to the Garden State, to Freehold to be exact. Beyond Organic Growers is one of the largest aeroponic farms in the nation. It is the only farm of its size and type north of Georgia or east of Oklahoma. The farm is run by fourth generation farmers using vertical, aeroponic tower technology going beyond organic to produce fresh fruits and vegetables. With 144, 10-foot-tall aeroponic towers and a 3500 square foot greenhouse, the farm promotes healthy and
sustainable lifestyles. Beyond Organic Growers uses an aeroponic water system that recirculates a nutrient solution and uses 95% less water than traditional field farming. The process allows for faster growing cycles, which means more production and lower costs. The result is fruits and vegetables that are free of any pesticides or GMOs, are locally grown and vine-ripened for better taste, and contain a higher nutritional value. With more than 15,000 plants being grown, the variety of produce available is superior to nearly all organic sections in food stores. Until recently the farm only sold to grocery stores, specialty stores, and restaurants such as Fresh Kitchen in Sea Girt or Tre in Freehold. Now the farm is open to the public and services more than ten local restaurants. “We have had several Girl Scout Troops visit the farm,” Theresa Reid of Beyond Organic Growers says. “They seed, plant, and taste-test as well as hold salad-in-a-jar parties. I have had a special education class trip as well. It is very inspirational when you see the kids in the greenhouse, tasting everything and loving to seed and plant.” As more and more people are seeking out healthy options and organic produce, Beyond Organic Growers is helping schools and various non-profits learn the technology. Both Rutgers University and the Colts Neck School System have smaller systems in place with plans for expansion.

LADACIN Network supporter Joseph Walker, formerly of Rumson, coordinated and established Team LADACIN after running the New York City Marathon and raising funds for the Agency four years in a row. Six years ago he brought his efforts and energy to the New Jersey Marathon, bringing in a host of new supporters for the Agency. Walker’s brother Conor has attended the Schroth Center of LADACIN Network for education and therapy services for over 20 years. The Walker family continues to be an integral part of Team LADACIN. Several family members and friends participate in the race each year and Walker’s mother, Denise Walker of Rumson, hosts an annual postrace fundraising party, contributing to the overall income from the event. The party was held at The Headliner in Neptune, with a BBQ lunch buffet, cash bar and music by Chris Morrisy. A gift raffle and donations solicited by the runners helped raise the total to over $36,000. For more information about LADACIN Network, visit www. ladacin.org.

MAKING HEALTHY TASTE GOOD Nine years ago Mike Nitto was constantly traveling for business. He found it extremely difficult to find healthy dining options anywhere in the United States that were both nutritious and flavorful. He set out to change that and spent years researching and developing dining options that are both healthy and taste good, but he needed the right partner. Chef Christopher Burgess was on his own culinary adventure spending six years working in a bio-dynamic farm in Colorado, a free range dairy farm in Vermont, a ranch in South Texas, a wild game ranch in Montana, and a self-sustainable fish hatchery in New Mexico. Burgess’s spent time in Southern California and Mexico, where his knowledge and passion for food solidified. While in California he opened a Culinary Arts Academy serving the local community, and a sister school for the Toussaint Academy of Arts and Sciences. He had the privilege to be a guest instructor for Le Cordon Blue, to cook for celebrities, presidents, athletes and dignitaries. A true partnership was formed as Nitto found Burgess, and in 2016 the Fresh Kitchen was launched in Sea Girt. By combining the most advanced preparation and cooking methods, flavor is maximized while ensuring vital nutrients are not lost.

“My international travel brought me to Asia regularly where every day we would have these delicious soups that you could pick what ingredients went in. They were not only fantastic, but I felt better right after eating them,” Nitto says. “I started making my own bone broth at home and creating different soups on a daily basis. I knew this needed to be brought to the public. The concept evolved to include wraps, salads, and grain bowls as well.” As part of their commitment to healthy, every item on the menu is salt and refined-sugar free, organic, non-GMO, and in most cases aeroponic from Beyond Organic Growers in Freehold. “Beyond Organic is a great family-owned local farm. Their aeroponics have incredible flavor and we get fresh deliveries on a daily basis,” Nitto says. “At Fresh we source everything as locally as we can and you can’t get much more local than 10-miles away.” You can learn more about Fresh Kitchen on its website, yourfreshkitchen.com.

The RFH Global Women Empowerment student organization and the RFH baseball team have once again worked together to support Change a Life Uganda (CALU). The second annual Home Run Derby was held on April 29, 2017 and raised over $3,000 in donations from the local community. CALU President Jean Semler attended the event to educate the community and to assist with the sale of goods created by Ugandan women. All of the funds raised at the event will be used to support the continued education of girls in Uganda. Fifty-five RFH students and members of the community competed in the Home Run Derby, and trophies were distributed to the top three scorers in each division. Firstplace winners were Lucas Gaus (six and under), Kellen Winters and Eve Maulshagen (tied, seven-eight years old), Jonathan Lauria (nine-twelve years old), Rylie Spiegal (high school) and Chris Shaw (adult). The Home Run Derby was made possible in part by generous donations from RFH parents as well as local businesses Booskerdoo, Cups and Cakes, and Mr. Pizza Slice.

The buzz of eager children reverberated across The Rumson Country Day School campus on May 12, 2017 as RCDS lower school students gathered on the bleachers to welcome their friends from The Red Bank Primary School (RBPS). After much anticipation, yellow school buses rolled into the parking lot and the crowd erupted into applause. Chants of “Let’s go Red Bank!” sounded across the field as about 260 RBPS first and second graders exited the buses and marched toward the warm welcome. After a brief introduction, the Red Bank Eagles and RCDS Gators joined forces to create red and white teams for a friendly competitive field day hosted by RCDS and Horizons Student Enrichment Program.

MARKHAM PLACE MIDDLE SCHOOL CYBERPATRIOT TEAMS WINS 1ST AND 2ND PLACE STATE AWARDS Two teams of middle school students from Markham Place Middle School in Little Silver recently concluded an exceptional round of competition in the ninth season of CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Established by the Air Force Association, the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created to excite, educate, and motivate students toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. CyberPatriot’s core program – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition – challenges teams of two to six students across the United States, Canada, and from Dept. of Defense Dependent schools abroad, to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated environments. The CyberPatriot field is divided into three divisions – the Open Division for public, private, and home school teams, the All Service Division for JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and Naval Sea Cadet Corps teams, and the Middle School Division. Led by Coach Greg Jansky and Co-coach Wendy Whittle, two teams of students from Markham Place Middle School excelled in the CyberPatriot VIII Middle School Division, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills, and technical knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity. The team’s performance this season earned it a spot in the Middle School Division Semifinals Round held February 3-5th, during which it outscored other Middle School teams registered in the state to take home the 1st and 2nd Place Middle School Division New Jersey State Award. Markham’s Middle School Teams included Team Warriors with students Matthew Schmitt, Carter Costic, Eden Stein and Mathias Lazewski taking 1st place honors and Team Blue&White with students Michael Mueller, Jack Clausing, Connor Langa and Patrick McGagh taking 2nd place. At the National level, these two teams scored 9th and 61st in the Nation respectively. Coach Jansky stated, “It was great to watch our teams as they wrestled with problems, thought outside the box, and applied what they learned throughout the year to exceed in the competition. The students of both teams learned and grew tremendously both as individuals and as teams. We look forward to competing again next year.”
