“Summer sun, something’s begun...” Growing up here, there has always been something special

about the month of June. Summer unofficially began Memorial Day Weekend and will be followed by three months of fun in the sun; days at the beach; parties by the pool; day trips to Great Adventure; twilight concerts at the Arts Center; and lazy nights of fireworks and lightning bugs. In Monmouth County we’ve added wineries and breweries, festivals and fairs, incredible golf courses, and every type of event imaginable! There’s always something fun and exciting to do in your neighborhood or the one next door. This month in our pages we bring you a smattering of those activities to enjoy. In this issue you’ll also find special pictures you won’t see anywhere else. We were fortunate to have front row seats to both the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival and The New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Both events took place in Asbury Park in May, and we were a proud sponsor. What an honor to support events that put a spotlight on the amazing talent that comes from our little, yet powerful, state of New Jersey! Highlights for me were meeting the one and only Buzz Aldren, and hearing Gloria Gaynor sing I Will Survive to a crowd on our feet and cheering! Watching Bruce Springsteen induct his friend Steven Van Zandt into the Hall of Fame was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we wanted to share that moment with you by placing it on our cover. Few things remind me of summer more than the E-Street Band and Asbury Park. Speaking of things that evoke memories of summer, dining by the beach is always a pleasure. One of our Meet Your Neighbor features this month allows us to give you a more intimate introduction to a well-known celebrity chef, David Burke on page 32. Chef Burke has opened a new restaurant in Sea Bright with his brother in charge of the kitchen - perhaps another destination for you and a loved one on a summer night? “Oh, those summer nights...” Enjoy them. They’ll go too fast and be gone too quickly. If the chance comes, take the afternoon off; eat the ice cream; try the yoga with the goats (you can read about that on page 38); call that friend you’ve been meaning to; and by all means get out in the sunshine and enjoy everything Monmouth County has to offer! Until next month,

Designer Handbag Event Raises Needed Funds for VNA’s Maternal Child Health Programs Over 260 women stepped out in their chicest cocktail attire to attend the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Children’s Auxiliary’s sixth bi-annual “The Power of the Purse” Ladies’ Night Out and Purse Auction on May 3. Hosted during one of the first beautiful nights of spring, the event raised over $55,000 for the VNA’s Children and Family Health Institute programs. Having raised $230,000 in total since its inception in 2008, the fundraiser has grown each year. Held at the scenic Riverhouse at Rumson Country Club, “The Power of the Purse” invited guests to take a chance and bid on more than 100 items includ-

ing purses, handbags, beauty packages, fitness classes, jewelry and more. The evening’s silent auction showcased luxury designer handbags, many of which are not readily available in stores or online. Before announcing the winners of the handbags, Bridget Murphy, the VNA’s Chief Philanthropy Officer, invited guests to watch a video featuring a patient family who receives case management and health care services from the organization. Featuring Neptune resident Laura Gaedt, and her VNA case manager Patricia Sciurba-Murphy, the video details Laura’s experience navigating the health

care services available for her son who has physical disabilities as well as the significant role that Patricia continues to play in the Gaedts’ lives. “To see everyone in attendance so captivated by the story of one family’s struggle to find healthcare for their child is remarkable,” said. Murphy. “We are grateful to all of the volunteers, attendees, sponsors and supporters of this year’s Power of the Purse — our most successful to date. It is their support that enables the VNA to continue making a difference for families like the Gaedts. Last year the VNA cared for over 53,000 patient families like the Gaedts.”

Launched in 2013, the VNA Children and Family Health Institute is a strategic initiative to strengthen, enhance and improve visibility and access to community-based care for at-risk children and their families. The Institute’s “no wrong front door” approach is comprised of 17 unique grantfunded programs that ensure the health and well-being of individuals and families. The Institute’s programs help families, regardless of their circumstances, connect to health care, as well as navigate the complexities of the public and private health services and assistance available to them.

Monmouth County SPCA Dog Walk & Pet Fair Raises Over $110,000

We’re here if you need us this summer.

Proceeds to Benefit the Homeless Animals of Monmouth County

24-HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE Doctors on premises 24 hours a day Appointments available 7 days a week SPECIALTY CARE BY REFERRAL ONLY

The Monmouth County SPCA raised over $110,000 during its Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair on April 28 at Brookdale Community College. Celebrating 24 years of Paws Walking for a Cause, the event, held in conjunction with corporate partner Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, proved a monumental success for the organization. The funds raised will be allocated to treating the thousands of homeless animals that pass through the SPCA shelter every year. Over 1,000 people and their pets convened on the Brookdale Campus in the pristine spring weather to enjoy the festivities and support the mission of the MCSPCA. The Monmouth County SPCA welcomed back Jimmy Steal as the event emcee with The Wag as the musical guest. A new attraction this year was Merck, who offered onsite microchipping for dogs. VCA Animal Hospitals was another major sponsor this year and have locations all across New Jersey. Over 100 vendors displayed their unique products, with many donating 10% of their sales back to the shelter. One lucky Long Branch resident took over $9,000 home through the 50/50 Raffle, but the luckiest of all were the 8 dogs that found their forever homes at the event! Next year will be the 25th Anniversary for the event and there are already special plans in store to celebrate a quarter-century milestone.

Hanaway Croddick RCDS Eighth Grader Serves up Smiles with Volleyball Court Donation to Local School

Hanaway Croddick

The new Harbor School volleyball court.

16

hanaway croddick shielded the sun from her face and stepped back to observe the cheerful scene around her. She took in students’ shining eyes as they watched a volleyball soar over the sturdy new net that stretched across their lawn. Laughter and spirited shouts of encouragement filled the air as a volley began. Suddenly, the ball swished past Hanaway’s face bringing her attention back to the game. The students celebrated as she gathered up the ball and set her feet to rejoin the fun. Hanaway, an eighth grader at The Rumson Country Day School, surprised students at The Harbor School, a school for special needs students, on May 9, with a gift-inkind – a volleyball court to enhance their physical education program. Last year at RCDS’s 2017 graduation ceremony, Hanaway was recognized with the Class of 1994 Jane Denny Community Service Award, which honors a student who has exhibited exemplary efforts to serve the community. The award, typically given to an eighth grader, gives the recipient an opportunity to designate a donation to a non-profit or charitable organization. “As a seventh grader at the time, I was shocked when I heard I was the recipient,” explained fourteenyear-old Hanaway. “I was honored and excited. But winning awards is not what this is all about. It’s about helping others and being a role model for other students. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the people we are helping - that’s the greatest reward.” “The recipient of this honor must demonstrate altruism and leadership,” said RCDS Service Learning Coordinator Amy Clark. “Hanaway approaches every opportunity with enthusiasm and a willingness to lend a hand whenever and wherever she

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com

sees a need. This makes her stand out as a leader within the Service Learning Program. I have been particularly impressed by her kindness and respectful interactions with the students at The Harbor School.” It was the summer going into 6th grade when Hanaway followed her older brother’s suggestion to volunteer with The Harbor School. She immediately knew she wanted to pursue more time with the students when her school year started, and the RCDS Service Learning Program gave her that opportunity. An elective available to Upper School students, the Service Learning Program is tied into the curriculum and serves as an integral part of the RCDS educational experience. About three times each month, the 35 students currently enrolled visit The Harbor School, The Atrium, an assisted living facility, and the RCDS Beginners, Pre-K and Nursery classrooms to share a positive moment with someone in need. “The Service Program is a beneficial experience for both our students and the volunteers,” said Brian Dorgan, Supervisor of Curriculum at The Harbor School. “It provides an eye-opening perspective that students may not have gained otherwise. Watching them grow and form those bonds with each other is a really cool thing to witness.” “I hope to visit my friends at The Harbor School this summer,” Hanaway said regarding her plans after graduation. “In the fall, I will be attending The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. I was really impressed by their robust community service projects. I hope to participate as much as I can, and maybe even introduce some of the things I took away from the RCDS Service Learning Program.”

DIVORCE TALK: GENDER EQUALITY BY PET E R C . PA R A S , E S Q.

Peter C. Paras

is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. Selected as "Super Lawyer" by NJ Monthly 2006 – 2018. Included in Best Lawyers in America 2015 – 2018 For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

Fifty years ago divorce laws in New Jersey followed a much different social convention than they do now. Divorces were only granted if your spouse was “at fault”, having been guilty of desertion, extreme cruelty, or adultery. And if both spouses were at fault, the defense of condonation prevented either party from getting a divorce from the other, thereby sentencing the couple to life together, without parole. Now, a divorce can be based on irreconcilable differences, a ground which requires no finger pointing and which is considered a no-fault ground. And condonation no longer exists, thereby allowing each spouse to be divorced from the other. Although the change in the way divorces are granted is highly representative of changing social standards, perhaps the more significant reflections of changing social mores came with the advent of the women’s movement and the unabated forward march of women in the workplace and in society in general. In 1971 New Jersey adopted equitable distribution as a way to apportion assets and liabilities in divorce. Before that, assets (and liabilities) would belong to the spouse (usually the husband) in whose name the asset was titled. Equitable distribution was the state’s recognition that the non-working spouse (usually the wife in those days) may have contributed to the acquisition of the marital estate in non-economic ways, e.g., caring for the family and providing emotional support to the breadwinner. Over the years, our statutes have been revised to change gender stereotypical pronouns to more gender neutral language. For example, the child support statute refers to the parents’ obligations, not just the

father’s, as it used to. Alimony is now paid from one “party” to the other, not from the husband to the wife. Case law has followed suit. The “tender years presumption”, which assumed that a child six years old or younger was better off with his mother, no longer exists. And parents in custody disputes now start on equal footing, regardless of the child’s age. As fathers have become increasingly more involved in their children’s lives and upbringing, shared custody arrangements (frequently even 50/50) have become more commonplace, often resulting in more highly compensated mothers paying child support to less well paid fathers. This is a natural consequence of women’s march toward equal pay and equality in the workplace, but frequently requires an adjustment in thinking. An even more difficult pill to swallow, one that men have choked on for years, but with a sense of resigned acceptance, is the reality that more women find themselves compelled to pay alimony to their exhusbands. As women get ever closer to gender equality, they will share more of its benefits, but also more of its burdens. Although this makes sense to most people on an intellectual level, it can, quite understandably, require some getting used to on an emotional level. A recent survey of its members by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that 54% reported an increase in the number of mothers paying child support over the last three years, while 45% reported an increase in the number of women paying alimony. And 78% reported an increase in shared custody arrangements. It is clear that gender equality is here to stay - for better or for worse.

A Professional Corporation For The Practice of Family Law

Summer Sun Safety Story: Hope Daniels

Can you imagine having to break the news to all beach goers that the Jersey Shore sun is too damaging for their family’s skin? You probably had the same reaction I did: “I’d rather hide out in the witness protection program and hope an enraged drooling toddler doesn’t find me with a shovel and bucket in their hand.” Let’s face it, we all have heard about the sun’s dangerous effects. However, we also know those facts won’t prevent diehard beach lovers from enjoying the sun and the surf, and well, it shouldn’t. We at the Jersey Shore know that Summertime at the sea is too much fun to pass up. That’s why I reached out to Dr. Kristine Krever, a board certified family physician who specializes in aesthetic medicine at the Center for Aesthetic Medicine at Colts Neck. From sunscreen protection do’s and don’ts to product facts and myths, here are essential tips for dodging those dangerous rays while enjoying your beach days. CM: How is sunscreen supposed to work and why should we wear it? Dr. Krever: Sunscreens work in one of two ways. There are ones that protect from harmful UV radiation by reflecting the rays away from your skin - as in the case of mineral sunscreens. Others absorb the radiation before it can make it into your skin, which are chemical sunscreens. However, it should be noted that chemical sunscreens have a limit as to how much radiation they can absorb. This means that they stop working after about two hours of exposure, even if the product is still in place (not sweated or washed off). For that reason it is imperative that these be reapplied even if you haven’t been in the water or sweating.

22

CM: Do brand names and price of the lotion

matter?

Dr. Krever: As long as a sunscreen is rated at 30 SPF or higher, you should choose a sunscreen based on the conditions you will be using it under and for how it feels on your skin. I personally try to avoid any product that relies on oxybenzone, as it has some long-term safety concerns. I also stay away from products that contain parabenbased preservatives or retinyl palmitate for similar reasons. I also recommend that my patients try to find a sunscreen that they like the feel, smell and look of. It won’t matter how good the quality of a sunscreen is if you won’t actually end up using it. In my opinion, it's only worth spending extra on a higher end brand when you are purchasing a sunscreen for daily use. These products need to be elegant, pleasant to wear and not necessarily water resistant. Sunscreens that will be used for full body protection on the beach or other outdoor activities should be used liberally and there are many affordable choices available that provide good protection if you search for them. CM: There is a ton of information out there about SPF. What is SPF and what does it really measure? Is there such a thing as 75+? Is there a number that can be used for an entire family or do adults, kids and babies get their own number of protection? Dr. Krever: SPF 30, when applied appropriately, blocks the vast majority of UVB rays and is sufficient for all ages. It’s important to know that SPF doesn’t reveal anything about UVA exposure. Products are typically labeled “broad spectrum” to denote UVA coverage. Increasing the SPF rating to 50 or 70 only increases the protection

marginally. When choosing a sunscreen for babies and children, the bigger consideration should be the ingredients used and how it is applied. Mineral blockers such as zinc and titanium are generally considered safer for young children. CM: We see so many advertisements on

sunscreen bottles nowadays. With all of these labels saying “anti-aging, sensitive, eczema, etc.,” how can a family decide which is the best one for them? Dr. Krever: In general, I try to stick with products that only focus on a single purpose. I find when products are trying to do more than one thing at once they end up falling short on all counts. So products that are intending to also repel insects, or act as a self-tanner or makeup are usually not a great choice. CM: Spray vs. Lotion. I often hear this debate. Is one better than the other? Dr. Krever: Spray sunscreens are certainly convenient for applying with less mess and can be a good choice for people with hairbearing areas that need protection. They are however, frequently under-applied and a large amount of the product is wasted and dispersed into the environment. Spray sunscreens are also almost always chemical-based which may not be the best choice, especially for children. Lotionbased sunscreens have a wider selection of ingredient types and are often the best choice, as long as they get used in the proper amounts. A shot glass worth of sunscreen is necessary for most full body applications. That means if applied correctly, a 4oz. bottle will only last four applications. If your bottle of sunscreen is lasting longer than that, you're probably not using enough.

Challenges and Treatment of Substance Abuse by John Muldoon, PhD, LPC

l to r: Barbara Tatum, LPC, Meredith O’Brien, LCSW (founder), Jessica Lupon, LPC

My name is John Muldoon. I am a new therapist at Meredith O’Brien & Affiliates, LLC. I have extensive clinical experience in both the areas of substance abuse and domestic violence. I was a former university professor and had the privilege to teach and to supervise graduate students. In addition to my doctorate in counselor education, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Addictions Counselor and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. My passion is counseling people who have substance use and abuse issues. One thing I have learned, among others, is the effect that problematic substance use has on individuals, family members, and others around the individual. In my master’s program, I researched individuals, including adolescents, with substance abuse and dependence issues. I began exploring the effects of addiction on significant others and children. I learned about Sharon WegscheiderCruse’s experiences on counseling families and children of alcoholics.

Her research on family roles (dependent, co-dependent, hero, scapegoat, mascot, and lost child) in an alcoholic family were quite relevant with the individuals and families I was counseling. Claudia Black’s rules (don’t talk, don’t trust, and don’t feel) also connected with family members. An individual’s statement that his or her use does not affect anyone else became quite the myth. Statistically speaking, 26.9% of people ages 18 or older reported that they engaged in binge drinking (men 5 drinks in two hours; women - 4 drinks in two hours) in the past month. Seven percent reported that they engaged in heavy alcohol use in the past month, where heavy alcohol use is defined as binge drinking on five or more days in the past month (The National Institute of Health, 2015). The American Society of Addiction Management reported that 2 million people had a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers and 591,000 had a substance use disorder involving heroin. In addition, 259 million opioid prescriptions were written in 2012; that is more than enough to give every American adult a bottle of pills.

So, what do we do about substance addiction? It seems there are two main objectives beyond making treatment accessible to people who generally do not believe they have a substance problem, who are not interested in treatment, and/or who do not want to decrease or stop using. One avenue is to provide education because there are many myths about addiction including that one has to drink/use daily. The second is to collaboratively develop and continually evaluate a plan that provides the direction for treatment. Obstacles will occur for most clients, usually in the form of defenses. It is important for a well-trained addictions counselor to understand, recognize, and challenge the subtle and not so subtle thoughts and behaviors that make progress in counseling challenging. I continue to be fascinated with addictions counseling. The process is different for each individual. It is important to explore the individual and family dynamics and to acknowledge and to validate the impact addiction has on the family unit. If you or a loved one is suffering with addiction please contact our practice.

His diverse career is filled with many exciting and unique experiences, including numerous television appearances, owning renowned restaurants, philanthropic work, creating patented inventions, and authoring cookbooks. This same renowned chef is the man behind the new Drifthouse Restaurant in Sea Bright. A Jersey boy since childhood, Burke grew up in Monmouth County eating pizza at the local Romeo’s Pizzeria in Hazlet. With soul of a true foodie, he has a playful flair for his dishes. He feels just as at home serving the President of the United States in his restaurant at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. as he is serving his GourmetPops line of cheesecake lollipops. Drifthouse is Burke’s first oceanfront offering - a New American restaurant opened in April in partnership with the Stavola Family, owners of Driftwood Cabana Club. Open year-round to the public, Drifthouse serves dinner daily with happy hour promotions at the bar and lounge. Chef Robert Burke, David’s brother and colleague of 30 years, leads the kitchen. Burke has been featured on television, including appearances on two seasons of Bravo's Top Chef Masters, Iron Chef America, a guest spot on the Every Day with Rachael Ray show, NBC’s TODAY Show, Bloomberg's small-business television series The Mentor, and more. He is currently developing concepts for two more television shows.

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a student at École Lenôtre Pastry School in Plaisir, France, Burke has worked with legendary chefs in France and New York. His mastery of French culinary technique and his unique American creativity were confirmed at an early age when he received Three Stars from the New York Times. Burke was then chosen by his peers to represent the USA at The International Culinary Competition and won France’s coveted Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplôme d’Honneur. He is the only American to ever achieve this honor. Burke also won the Nippon Award for Excellence from the government of Japan for his overall skill and technique. Burke is also actively involved in culinology, an approach to blending culinary arts and food technology. As a culinary pioneer, Burke’s innovations and revolutionizing techniques appear on menus all over the world. Burke owns the patent for the unique process by which he uses pink Himalayan salt to dry-age his steaks for up to 100 days. Always looking for a new culinary adventure, Burke was chosen to head food operations at Garden City Hotel in Garden City, New York this spring. He is also joining the Adelphi Hotel in Saratoga Springs as culinary director, overseeing the hotel’s restaurants. Here is our exclusive Meet Your Neighbor with Chef David Burke: Where I grew up: I was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Hazlet, Monmouth County. What I love about Monmouth County: The diversity of the people My favorite local restaurant as a kid: Romeo’s Pizzeria, on Union Avenue in Hazlet. How I first became interested in cooking: I worked as a dishwasher on Route 35 at a Holiday Inn. What it’s like to work with my brother: My brother and I have worked together in the past 30 years, on and off, we are like peas and carrots.

How I feel about having a restaurant at the Jersey Shore: I am very excited at the opportunity. I hope it will lead to other opportunities for this restaurant group. It’s a great layout and my parents are 10 miles away. I’m going to serve many local products, it’s a preferred location for fish and farms. How it feels to be the only American to ever win France’s coveted Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Diplome d’Honneur: I am exceptionally proud of the award. I represented the United States in an International culinary competition, we showed up and opened a can of Whoop-ass. I hold two patents in the culinary world: Creativity is my strength, patents protect my ideas. What’s coming next: I am developing two culinary shows for TV. They will feature plenty of travel, work, humor, and food drama. In 2016 you were named the New Jersey Red Cross Clara Barton Humanitarian of the Year: It’s not about the award, but the recognition is appreciated. I am in a position to help others, and it’s about caring for others in need. Favorite meal: Eggs & Peking Duck Favorite beverage non-alcoholic, and alcoholic: Coffee and Pisco Food I do not like: Anchovies

WHAT ARE RELAXING, SWEET, AND HAVE NO SMELL?

Goats Doing Yoga, of Course!

You’ve most likely seen the videos or pictures on one of your social media accounts. Take a room full of people doing yoga and add…goats. It’s a new trend that started two years ago when a recently divorced woman named Lainey Morse discovered the goats on her Oregon farm helped her fight depression. She started having “Goat Happy Hour” each day and inviting friends to join. Her friends found the soft, gentle animals comforting, and before long a friend who is also a yoga instructor had a great idea. Morse’s first year in the Goat Yoga business brought in more than $160,000. Wildly popular, local organizations such as OASIS tlc are now having Yoga with Goats bring in money to support their causes. OASIS tlc is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote inclusion and acceptance of autistic individuals into their local communities. By establishing environmentally exemplary farm centers, they provide meaningful work, peaceful and healthy residences, and community interaction. Interested in joining the fun while helping a great cause? Both Hot and Soul Yoga and Synergy Hot Yoga Studios provide classes on the Red Bank farm a couple days a week for $30 per person plus a small registration fee that goes directly to OASIS tlc. Reservations are required, contact LaurieMOASIS@ gmail.com for more information or visit www.oasistlc.org.

OVERCOMING AN INJURY Sometimes life throws us a curveball. It happens to all of us. The key is not living our lives in a way that will prevent these curveballs but using them as tools to growth. Three weeks ago, I tore my ACL, medial meniscus and lateral meniscus in my knee. Surgery was required to reconstruct the ACL and repair what they could of the meniscus. As an active individual who relies on movement and exercise for health (body and mind) and trains others to do the same, I was devastated. Recovery for an injury like mine takes months. Part of me wanted to throw in the towel - accept that perhaps I would never run again, never hike the mountains I’ve always dreamed of taking on, and that I would need to look into another line of work. But the other part of me knew that if I could choose to use this injury as a means to slow down my chaotic life, find new and better ways of moving my body and use my newfound personal understanding of joint pain to better empathize with and help others, I could come out with not only a better life for myself but also for my clients. So as I take the time to heal, I am also pursuing new certifications in joint health and neuromuscular systems. These certifications will help me better serve clients looking to relieve pain, change body composition, or increase strength and performance. Since the focus is on the nervous system, it doesn’t matter if you’re a

75-year-old man, a 35 year old gym goddess or a 55 year old woman. All of us have the same potential for tapping into our best selves ever, when we focus on the nervous system. I am also learning to breathe. I never realized how much I hold my breath and how critical the simple act of breathing can be. Research shows that when controlled breathing is used to facilitate meditation, the result can be an actual increase in brain size. Specifically, the brain experiences growth in areas associated with attention and processing of sensory input. The effect seems to be more noticeable in older people, which is especially good news because it’s the reverse of what typically happens as we age—gray matter usually becomes thinner. Notice throughout your day how often you hold your breath or take shallow anxiety driven breaths. Learning how to breathe deeply, filling our lungs completely can actually reduce our anxiety and depression, improve posture, decrease pain and reduce inflammation. Small steps can make big changes in your health. So let’s start breathing deeply, and learning together to maximize our situations. I look forward to bringing my new knowledge to you in the coming months and helping you move and feel better as I do the same.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com

Why are so many women seeking breast enhancement surgery? There is no one single reason. Each case is very personal and based on the individual’s body and self image. However, speaking generally, the most popular goals are to increase the size, change the shape of the woman’s breasts, or to improve symmetry between the breasts. Women who are interested in this procedure before pregnancy are typically looking to increase breast size or symmetry. Post-pregnancy, women are commonly seeking to restore shape or lost volume. After childbirth, the breasts can bear significant resemblance to the deflated appearance that results from weight loss. Breast implants can also be used to form an “hourglass” figure by creating balance between the chest and hips. No matter the situation, women who seek these procedures typically share a common desire to feel more confident about their appearance in and out of clothes. So, how do you go about getting breast implants? If you’ve been considering a breast augmentation, consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultations, you’ll want to discuss your desires for the size, feel, and appearance of your breasts. A helpful tip is to bring magazine photos, printouts or screenshots on your phone with you to show what you’re hoping to look like when the procedure and recovery are finished. Your surgeon will also educate you on the various options you have for implants. Do you want them to be saline or silicone gel-filled, round or teardrop-shaped, or have a textured or smooth surface? He or she will discuss these options with you as well as different methods for performing the surgery and how implants can be placed above or below the muscle. The type of implants and their placement will be decided based on your existing proportions and how best to achieve your desired outcome. Choose a surgeon based on their reputation for safety and their results. Read from patient reviews and seek out “before” and “after” photos of their work. Make sure the pictures you brought in with you look like the “after” pictures in their portfolio. As for price, there are plenty of financing options available for this procedure and many are interest-free for a period of time. The surgery can be performed in an accredited, private surgery center or at an outpatient hospital facility. Most likely, you’ll be under general anesthesia and asleep the whole time and can return home same-day. The healing period requires wearing a compression bra. After approximately one week, you should be able to return to your job. Soreness and swelling are common for a few weeks after surgery, so get plenty of rest to ensure optimal healing. It will take several months for your implants to settle and to see a more complete result. For more information, contact Samra Plastic Surgery at 732.739.2100 or visit samraplasticsurgery.com

Care to Give Women’s Auxiliary Hosts Annual Signature Event On May 18, Care to Give, Riverview Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary, held its annual signature event, Reason to Party, at Navesink Country Club in Middletown. Over 300 physicians and members of the local community came out to support and celebrate a phenomenal year for this longstanding organization. The evening was punctuated by an award ceremony honoring three of Riverview’s most highly respected and highly accomplished physicians - Dr. Phillipa Woodriffe, Dr. Steven Lisser and Dr. John Royall - for their invaluable and enduring contributions to the Hospital, its patients and the greater community. These physicians exemplify the mission of Care to Give, and the art of healing, through their devotion to increasing awareness, enhancing the quality of Riverview’s services and improving the health and wellness of our community. In the past year, Care to Give has distinguished itself in Monmouth County through the provision of rich health-related educational and outreach programs to over 6,000 children, 211 teachers and 9,000+ residents of our local communities. It provided programming to eight

different school districts, and partnered with various community organizations such as Horizons, Bloom Again and 180 Turning Lives Around. Beyond Care to Give’s already well-established Teddy Bear Clinics, this year it expanded enrichment experiences to include nutrition-focused, interactive cooking demonstrations for children and adults; design thinking programs for middle school students; and hospital-based hands on experiences for high schoolers who are interested in careers in medicine. On the cusp of its 90th year, Riverview Women’s Auxiliary has supported the hospital and the community since the very beginning in 1929. As community leaders and dedicated professionals, the women of Care to Give all generously share their passion and commitment to serving patients, supporting our community and fulfilling the mission of Riverview Medical Center. In the words of Dr. Joseph Reichman, Riverview’s Vice President of Clinical Effectiveness and Medical Affairs, “Care to Give is the bedrock of the Riverview Community. It supports our team, it supports our physicians, it seeks and supports our community’s greatest needs.”

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: CANDICE GUINAN My name and title: Candice Guinan, Licensed Massage Therapist and owner of Living Garden Therapeutic Massage When my business started: I have had a traveling massage business since 2012, but opened a brick and mortar office in Red Bank in June 2017. The problem my business solves: Massage therapy is one of the least invasive, yet most effective, treatments for pain. It can be used for relaxation, stress relief, and rehabilitation for issues ranging from a stiff neck to spinal surgery. Massage and bodywork compliments other treatments such as chiropractic and physical therapy. What sets me apart from others doing what I do: While most representations of massage are pampering, the reason most people actually get massages are because something hurts. Living Garden gets straight to the point to provide massage and bodywork to help reduce pain, increase tissue repair, and improve

50

function. Why I started my business: From a young age, I have had a very entrepreneurial mind. After having experience working with physical therapists, personal trainers, chiropractors, pain management doctors, and collegiate sports teams, as well as managing spas, it only made sense to strike out on my own to be able to provide massage therapy how I want to: no pushy upselling, no Faustian memberships, and completely client focused. What I love most about being in business: I love offering a nurturing space where I provide rehabilitative and restorative massage therapy to down-toearth clients. My next goal: I have offered a few events with one of my neighbors, Jaya Yoga, and am looking forward to offering some solo workshops on topics such as aromatherapy and couples massage lessons.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

My hobbies outside work: I am a very productive person, for better or for worse. When not working on my business, I enjoy gardening and landscaping at my grandmother’s house and my balcony, baking (hopefully new treats that I haven’t made before), camping, and reading. I also teach Anatomy and Physiology at my alma mater, The Institute for Therapeutic Massage in Tinton Falls.

Local High School Students Visit Riverview Medical Center on Career Day By Susan Murphy In early May, seven sophomore students from Red Bank Regional High School who were interested in healthcare professions visited Hackensack Meridian Riverview Medical Center. The Red Bank Rotary, selected the students and facilitated the visit in honor of Career Day. “Riverview Medical Center is just one of the many locations that students can visit on Career Day. We have hosted them for almost a decade and look forward to doing so in the future. This program began with Dr. Anthony Micale, and his wife Patty has carried the tradition this past year,” explained April Guillerme Dunic, Manager, Public Relations for Bayshore Medical Center/Riverview Medical Center. “The students were excited about the tour and asked very smart questions of the various department managers. By the end, you could see that different departments resonated with different students, and it was thrilling from our standpoint to be able to watch them come alive when they were watching a demonstration that spoke to them and their interests.” She added, “Our commitment to the students is ongoing and we would be honored to do this year after year for any student interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field.” Chief Operating Officer at Riverview Medical Center Kelli O’Brien stated, “Providing these students with an early glimpse of a life in healthcare can help them determine which field they may wish to pursue and I think that’s incredibly valuable. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for the hospital and our community. These students may choose to work at Riverview Medical Center one day!’

RCDS’s Annual Rummage Sale Benefits Local Community The Rumson Country Day School’s Annual Rummage Sale, popularly known as A Whale of a Sale kicked off on April 20, and still proved to be a huge success 49 years after its inaugural opening.

That moment when...

PERSEVERANCE PREVAILS

The Rummage Sale is the school’s longest running community service project and has become an anticipated tradition involving every family at RCDS. For many days prior to the sale, RCDS’s Blake Gymnasium was buzzing with parent volunteers unloading, unpacking, organizing and displaying a vast variety of donated items from the community. In the days to follow, lines of faculty, staff, friends, family and community members stretched down the block for the affordable shopping opportunity. Shoppers browsed boutique treasures to household and family necessities for unlimited bargains. They could also bid on silent auction items like furniture, antiques, china, crystal, artwork and collectibles. The Rummage Sale is one of the most important fundraisers at The Rumson Country Day School, with proceeds devoted to the financial aid program, which provides tuition assistance to many children who attend the school. Also a testament to RCDS’s commitment to community service, the sale provides low-cost goods to those in need. Unsold items were donated to local charities including Lunch Break, ASPCA, The Harbor School, Lutheran Church Community Clothes Closet, Family & Children’s Services, Horizons Student Enrichment, and The Salvation Army. “Thank you to all of the community for donating their quality goods and to our parent body for staffing the set-up, organization and sale days,” said co-chair Maryann Baret. “We are especially grateful for our maintenance staff, led by Mr. Brian Stolowski, who organized all the infrastructure for the event to ensure the success of the sale.”

Boy Scout Troop 125 Announces Five Eagle Scouts Five members of Boy Scout Troop 125 in Fair Haven have achieved Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting. The ceremony for Reed DiCenso, Aidan Eustace, David Ham, Matthew Ramirez, and Patrick Sach was held on April 26 at Christ Church on Ridge Road in Fair Haven, with Scout Master Robert List officiating. Father Jim Grogan, Pastor of the Church of the Nativity, gave the invocation. Reverend Russell Eidmann-Hicks of Holmdel Community United Church of Christ gave the closing prayer. “The Road to Eagle Scout” is a journey that includes years of dedication to scouting and culminates in the completion of a service project. The service project is a daunting undertaking that needs to be completed by the candidate’s eighteenth birthday. The project must be

approved by a Boy Scout Board of Review, and has to provide ample demonstration of a scout’s planning, organizational, and leadership skills.

The newest Eagle Scouts of Troop 125 in Fair Haven are (from left to right) Matthew Ramirez, Patrick Sach, Aidan Eustace, David Ham, and Reed DiCenso.

Former Casey Becomes an NFL Colt Quenton Nelson is fast becoming the most famous football player to have come from Holmdel or graduate from Red Bank Catholic High School (Class of 2014). The offensive guard was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft and has since garnered praise as not only one of the safest picks throughout the three-day event, but perhaps the best pick of 2018. Nelson, #56, is currently in training for the upcoming season and is expected to start at left guard for the Colts. Congratulations Quenton on your graduation from the University of Notre Dame and your draft into the NFL!

Besides being known for fresh corn, tomatoes, and blueberries, New Jersey is also home to fabulous wineries. Whether you are interested in learning how the grapes are harvested, how the wine is blended, or perhaps how it tastes in comparison to what you normally enjoy, touring a winery offers a behind the scenes look at how a grape transforms into a delightful beverage. However, before you go on your first or next winery tour, it’s important to follow a few important rules to ensure you have the best visit possible: Designate a driver. Have someone in your group volunteer or plan to take a car

service home. You are going to taste quite a bit of wine and all of those “small” sips do add up. Avoid scheduling your tour for late in the day. This is especially true if you are

going on a weekend. Getting to know the folks behind the bar and the winemakers themselves will give you amazing insight into the process. You may miss this opportunity during more crowded time slots. Most winemakers enjoy discussing their passion with guests so don’t be shy about asking questions.

Expand your palette. If you favor a “dry white,” consider trying something sweeter.

In fact, there is no better time to discover a new favorite then when visiting a winery. Go beyond comfort zone and try everything! Eat something before going. Wine tasting on an empty stomach is a surefire way

to get drunk faster and possibly ruin the experience for your entire crew. Drink water in between the tastings to keep yourself hydrated. Remember, it’s called wine “tasting” for a reason. This is not the time to polish off an entire bottle.

Remember to smell what you taste. Besides tasting, smell is a huge part of the

experience. Try to avoid wearing too many fragrances that could interfere with the wine’s natural aroma.

It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Because you will taste a myriad of varieties, it’s important to pace yourself. You will find buckets on the table and although it may sound disgusting, spit buckets are there for a reason. Spitting is not only welcome, but also encouraged. Believe me, those “pours” add up and spitting is an ideal way to pace yourself as you go. That way you can taste the wine without having to necessarily ingest it.

Fun Fact: Did you know the word “Oenophobia” describes those that have a fear of wine?
