Rumson School District Auditorium is Officially Open
On May 5, the Borough of Rumson School District opened the doors of its new multi-purpose room and auditorium to the sights, sounds, and musical talents of the Forrestdale School musicians. The grand opening event came after two-plus years of construction under the November 2019 bond referendum. The space holds 500 seats, a full-service stage, green room, and concession/ticket area. Designed with 250 retractable seats, the room can be divided into sections to accommodate various events, such as assemblies, book fairs, art shows, recess, and performances to name a few. The event began with a ribbon cutting conducted by Dr. John Bormann, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Charles Jones, Board of Education President, and Jamie O’Brien, Supervisor of Building and Grounds. Attendees entered the new space for a concert presented by the Forrestdale Senior Choir and the Forrestdale Intermediate and Advanced Bands. The ceremony and concert were opened by 8th grader Joseph Whitehouse, with a welcome and the Pledge of Allegiance, and 8th grader Dakota Diehl, who delivered an outstanding rendition of the national anthem. Dr. Bormann then welcomed guests, including Mayor Hemphill and members of the Borough of Rumson Council and administration,

concluding, “It is my hope that this space will be utilized for generations to come, both within the schools and through the community, as a place to honor individuals through ceremony, celebrate individual performance talents, and gather people as a community.” Dr. Jones, followed proudly enumerating other district projects achieved under the referendum, including renovations to classrooms, media center redesign, science lab upgrades, and improvements in security and HVAC systems. After a fantastic performance by the Intermediate and Advanced Bands under the leadership of John Lebitsch, Dr. Bormann, Dr. Jones, and Jamie O’Brien delivered thank yous and honored three individuals as “Honorary Bulldogs” for their support of the building projects: Steve Siegel, Principal from Spiezle Architectural Group; Tania Rabitsky, Greyhawk Construction consultant; and general contractor Markos Parlamas, Vice-President of G & P Parlamas. The night ended with fabulous performances by the Forrestdale Senior Choir, under the leadership of Barbara Leutz, and the Jazz Ensemble, again led by Lebitsch. The Rumson PTO hosted a beautiful reception following the concert.
The Rumson Garden Club held its annual meeting at the Rumson County Club Riverhouse and awarded the Catherine B. Gonska Memorial Scholarship to Trinity Hall Senior Annaliese K. Heidelberger. The $2500 scholarship is presented annually to a local high school student who plans to attend an accredited college and has demonstrated an interest in the area of horticulture, environmental studies, conservation, marine science, or earth science. Applicants were required to write an essay outlining their interests and accomplishments, which should include academic studies and extracurricular activities. Among her many activities and service in the Two River community, Annaliese spearheaded the planting of a pollinator garden on the grounds of Trinity Hall. “Every year, my school has a service day where every student gets assigned to do service at the school or in the local community,” said Heidelberger. “During my junior

year, I got to orchestrate the planting of an on-campus pollinator garden as the leader of the Horticultural Club. This experience was very rewarding as I got to work with my fellow students to create a beautiful space for people and pollinators. Although it involved hard work, it is a standout moment for me because I received instant gratification from seeing all the flowers and milkweed buds we were able to plant. After so much planning, we were able to turn a bare plot of land on a forgotten corner of the school lawn into a garden where students could come for a reprieve from academics and where numerous species could thrive. Especially given the pandemic, it was a joyous moment to be able to share in my love for gardening with other people and feel like I had created a positive legacy.” For more information about the Rumson Garden Club and the Catherine B. Ritesh Shah Keeps Sister's Light Shining Through Charitable Pharmacy BY LILIANN PAR AS PHOTO MELISSA AMORELLI
The creation and operation of the first charitable pharmacy in New Jersey springs from the profound love of a brother for his sister. It is the story of first heartbreak and then action, and begins with a planned family celebration of Diwali in India, the Indian festival of lights.
20
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
The brother in this journey is Ritesh Shah, a prominent pharmacist and the CEO of the Legacy Pharmacy Group. Ritesh was very excited to visit India this year, to see his sister Rena and to celebrate Diwali with her. He especially looked forward to the festival day dedicated to the special bond between a brother and sister. “A sister prepares a meal and in return, a brother gives her a gift. It seemed like a perfect time to visit her,” Ritesh recalled. The highly anticipated meeting never occurred. By the time Ritesh arrived in India, Rena was on a ventilator and died due to health complications and COVID. They never had the chance to say their goodbyes in person or to celebrate brother/sister day. However, Ritesh was not deterred from his promise to give his sister a gift and he was inspired to honor her with a special and enduring one. “During Rena’s service, I decided I would do something meaningful to honor her. The idea of starting a charitable pharmacy kept coming up,” he said. “I thought, ‘I own a building and can donate the space, so, I don’t have to pay rent. But, how do I make this organization sustainable with the need to pay a pharmacist’s salary?’ My wife, Asha, also a pharmacist, came out of retirement and to the rescue. She said, ‘I will put on my lab coat and go back to work to honor our sister.’” Honoring the memory of Rena is always at the forefront of this undertaking; even the smallest aspects of the pharmacy were created with her in mind. Smiling, Ritesh recalled his sister’s gentle admonishment to him and her influence on choosing the color scheme. “I know you’re a big shot,” Rena had said, “but you are too hyper, you have to calm down.” And so, the color scheme of the pharmacy and its logo incorporate Rena’s favorite colors: blue and green hues to create a calming effect for those who enter. Recently, the Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy became a reality. The opening date had special, albeit unintended relevance, which Ritesh shared with a
big smile. “A Baptist pastor and friend pointed out that a Hindu-by-religion couple is opening a pharmacy on the Christian holy day of Good Friday, during Passover for the Jewish community, and in the holy month of Ramadan. I was unaware of the timing. God- whether Christian, Jewish, or Muslim- told me this must happen.” The endeavor has a clear vision and message: to be a catalyst for and have a say in healthcare disparities and inequities experienced by underserved people. It ensures access to needed medications for those who cannot afford them, thereby eliminating the need for repeated hospitalizations. One case Ritesh called “heart-wrenching” concerned a homeless man. With a catch in his throat, (LEFT TO RIGHT) ASHA SHAH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF he told of an Hispanic man GRUNIN FOUNDATION HEATHER BARBERI, RITESH SHAH, in his thirties, speaking PRESIDENT OF GRUNIN FOUNDATION JEREMY GRUNIN broken English, unwashed, and presenting with multiple bruises from falling incidents. Google translator came in very handy and they were able to discern that he had been recently discharged from a hospital. When asked who the treating physician was in order to obtain a prescription, the man replied that he had seen an Indian doctor. While telling this story, Ritesh’s winning smile once again lit up his face. “I told him, ‘Okay! Well, New Jersey has about 100,000 Indian doctors!’” Undaunted, through some sleuthing and persistence, Ritesh and his staff discovered the man was homeless and living in a car in Monmouth County. Epilepsy was causing his falls. Ritesh explained that upon discharge, a hospital only supplies one month of medications, and this patient had run out of his epilepsy and mental health medications. The Ritesh Chari-

table Pharmacy filled the prescription, treated him to a meal, and put him in touch with shelters. In the short time the pharmacy has been open, Ritesh and Asha formulated approximately 180 medications and already served more than 100 patients who meet the financial criteria. “My goal is to serve 2,000 patients this year. Regardless of economic status, pain is pain. When you lose a precious life, rich or poor, whether you have a billion dollars or none, you have the same tears of sorrow. I am a preceptor at Rutgers and I tell my students pharmacists have no politics in their practice– patients come to our door, and put their lives in our hands. I don’t want anyone to lose their lives because they don’t have money for medicine,” shared Ritesh.
A large share of the expenses is covered by the Shahs’ personal funds, donations from the community, and pharmaceutical companies. (The Eli Lilly company has committed to providing millions of dollars’ worth of life-saving insulin at no cost.) Local community partners include the Vin Gopal Civic Association, Grunin Foundation, Lunch Break, and Parker Family Health Center. Another resource is the Dispensary of Hope, which, for a yearly fee, provides surplus medications obtained from pharmaceutical companies. However, one of the most moving and meaningful donations came from a grateful recipient. The wife of a local landscaper could not believe the medications for her husband were free of charge. When Ritesh explained that the medications
were donated, she asked how he pays for the paper bags, the bottles, the utilities. After Ritesh explained that he and his wife paid for these expenses, she took a twenty-dollar bill from her purse and asked to contribute. The project is meaningful to Ritesh beyond the honor bestowed upon his sister. “This country has done so much for me. I came here from India with fifty dollars, after becoming a pharmacist. I’ve lived here 25 years, and my children grew up in Monmouth County. My son is going to be a doctor and my daughter is studying to be a lawyer. I’ve had so much support from the community, and now I want to be ‘the guy’ for those who don’t have support. The joy I’ve gotten cannot be measured in monetary value!”
The Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy is hosting its Founders’ Gala on June 26th at Bella Vista County Club. This is great way to support this new charitable endeavor with an evening of great food, friends, music, cultural dance performances, and spirits! To learn more or donate, visit rscprx.org.

Beyond the Brand Atlantic Pediatric Dentistry
L to R: Sally Guerrasio-Safari, Johanna Tryon, Farrah Safari (front), Sara Safari (back), Ava Safari, and Matt Safari (Family Photo Credit: James Michael Photography)
Dr. Matt Safari and Dr. Sally Guerrasio are the husband-and-wife partners at Atlantic Pediatric Dentistry, a practice in Little Silver. They are each extensively trained pediatric dentists, active in many professional dental organizations, and highly regarded by their peers. But just as impressive is the high regard they garner from the children they treat and their families. Caregivers are encouraged to stay with their children during the exams and treatment, and are often amazed by how a gentle approach allows treatment of even the most reluctant children. The doctors share their approach to working with children to reduce fears, and to help encourage and create life-long commitments to the maintenance of oral health. Who we are as a family: We are the typical blended American family of the 21st century. We have four wonderful daughters who amaze us each day. Our oldest, Sara, is a freshman at Fordham University and she loves fitness. Ava is also an avid sportswoman with varsity tennis and track on her resume. Johanna is third and is entering high school next year, hoping to make the tennis team and entering her school’s finance academy. Farrah is the youngest and she loves everything about school, soccer, and her friends. What we want you to know about Atlantic Pediatric Dentistry: Our office is made for families! We want our patients to feel welcome and supported by their siblings and parents when they are in the dental chair. Our “open door” policy encourages the entire family to learn about how to optimize a child’s dental health, all while in a comforting and supportive environment. We take our patient’s comfort seriously and use the latest technology, the Solea® laser, to reduce the need for traditional drilling and local anesthesia.
the joys and successes of these families, and often get to see them into their college years as they are choosing their own paths in life. What sets us apart from others doing what we do: Our office treats all children as if they were part of our work family! We have an exceptional team-many have been with the practice for decades-and when we come together, it is all for the benefit of the child in our care. You will not find more dedicated staff and doctors to treat your most prized possession. A tip to share with parents about pediatric dentistry: Pediatric dentistry is a specialty within the field of dentistry. All pediatric dentists train an additional 2-3 years after dental school in order to provide expert care to the pediatric population. Each child should see a pediatric dentist 6 months after the first tooth erupts or by age one.
What we do when not seeing patients: When we aren’t in our “home away from home”, we are spending time together at our chilOur biggest influence in choosing pediatric dentistry: We each dren’s sporting events, visiting with extended family, and traveling chose pediatric dentistry for the tremendous rewards and satisfac- around the USA. COMMON SENSE Our divorce laws are quite complicated and generally require the guidance of an experienced attorney to navigate successfully. However, no matter how good your lawyer is, he or she will have great difficulty overcoming your or your spouse’s lack of common sense. Common sense should be the guiding light for divorcing couples. Without it the process is likely to be more cumbersome, more stressful, more time consuming, and more expensive. For example, if a couple has reported combined gross income of $100,000 per year on joint income tax returns, it makes no sense to ask for $10,000 per month in alimony. Although that sounds pretty silly, you’d be surprised by how many people make such demands and stick with them no matter what their attorneys say. Your spouse has a perspective. You will undoubtedly disagree with some…or most… or even all of it, but your spouse does have a perspective. It defies common sense to ignore it. Whether you negotiate a settlement or litigate at trial, your spouse’s perspective will come into play. It will stand between you and your
divorce, so common sense requires you to consider it and address it. Agreements are preferable to trials in almost all cases. When you go to trial, both sides present their cases and then relinquish control over the outcome to a stranger in a black robe. By negotiating a settlement both parties retain a greater measure of control over the outcome. Of course, this requires compromise, so you probably won’t get everything you want. You have to give to get. After a lengthy trial (and I’ve tried many over the years) it is the rare case in which one spouse gets everything he/she wants. Why not make an attempt to bring about a satisfactory result through negotiation? Isn’t that just common sense? Using common sense when it comes to children makes a great deal of sense, too. Children should be a divorcing couple’s priority. Their needs should be placed above the needs of both spouses. After all, they didn’t ask to be born and they certainly had no say in their parents’ marital strife. Yet many “adults” fail to recognize this and place their needs above those of

the children. Some even weaponize the children by using them as pawns. Often this causes long term damage. It simply makes no sense. Many years ago, when I was a young lawyer, I represented a woman who was very angry with her husband. We spent the entire day at her husband’s lawyer’s office and by 5:30 we had settled all but one issue. They had two crockpots and she wanted them both! For nearly an hour the husband tried, without success, to convince her of the fairness in each of them getting one. Finally, with much prodding from his lawyer and after incurring more legal fees than a case of crockpots would cost, he used common sense and agreed that she would get both $20.00 items. People sometimes say you either have common sense or you don’t. I don’t necessarily buy that. I think you can develop common sense, particularly when a great need for it arises. There is no context in which the need for common sense is greater than divorce. Use it. It will serve you and your children well.

Sea Bright Volleyball Expecting Record Turnout this Summer
If the explosive growth of Sea Bright Volleyball Leagues is any indication, the appetite to socialize and exercise outdoors has never been greater. In its tenth year of operation, it’s projecting record participation of more than 1,000 locals in its weekly adult summer volleyball leagues, which starts June 6. Founder Corey Wagner reported that more than 100 teams signed up within twenty-four hours of online registration opening in April. “When we first started, it took weeks to get our first dozen teams registered,” noted Wagner. “This year it took less than five minutes. We’re humbled by the community’s adoption of the program and are thrilled to have the continued support of Sea Bright Borough in expanding operations this year.” League play runs about ten weeks long every summer on Sea Bright municipal beach. Teams pick from ten different evening timeslots from Monday to Thursday. Most leagues are recreational level with six players per team. Wednesday is their competitive four vs. four series. In addition to about ten weeks of volleyball, players receive a league t-shirt and perks at Donovan’s Reef after their games. Also being offered on Wednesday afternoons is a youth volleyball program for ages 10 to 18. Newly featured this year are mobile apps for participants and increased league capacity of 50% thanks to an investment made by the town to install a total of nine courts to help accommodate demand. “It’s been difficult the past couple years having to turn away teams who’ve been with us for a long time due to capacity constraints,” said Founder Patrick Finan. “That’s why we’re so excited to be upgrading the facility this year so more people can participate.” For more information, visit SeaBrightVolleyball.com.

Future Business Leaders of America Awards Local Students Top in State
Little Silver residents and Red Bank Regional High School seniors Matthew Schmitt and Carter Costic have placed first in a state competition held by Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The Accelerate award ceremony took place on March 11. Matthew competed in the category of Network Infrastructure; Carter competed in Database Design. Both students have been members of the local FBLA chapter since the beginning of their sophomore year of high school. Matthew explained why he chose Network Infrastructure. “In CyberPatriot competitions we have worked with Cisco firewalls and advanced threat devices. As an intern with my father’s computer integration company, I have had the opportunity to assist in the planning and implementation of computer networks for our customers. These experiences made my decision to compete in the category of Network Infrastructure an easy choice.” Carter chose Database Design and Applications because he wanted to try something different; as last year he competed
in Cybersecurity. “The most enticing part of this event is that it offers a hands-on component. I love working with databases outside of FBLA, so I thought, hey, why not try my luck in a more formal setting,” said Carter. Both students shared what it meant to earn first place in the state for their category: “I know I competed against some very smart people. Placing first gives me confidence that my hard work is paying off. I am thankful that FBLA puts on academic competitions to allow us to showcase our skills and get a chance to be rewarded for our success,” shared Matthew. “Earning first place in the state, especially this year with the in-person awards ceremony, was recognition of my hard work in the realm of computer science and as a student. It’s also a reminder of the enjoyment that comes from these events with such a strong community around them--and an incentive to continue competing, learning, and testing as I move onto college,” said Carter.

RCDS Students Conquer National Latin Exam “Veni, Vidi, Vici,” the ancient Latin phrase attributed to Julius Caesar (I came, I saw, I conquered) is an apt description of Rumson Country Day School (RCDS) students’ performance on the 2022 National Latin Exam. For the fourth consecutive year, seventh and eighth grade Gators surpassed national averages on the 40-question exam taken by approximately 80,000 students worldwide. Ninety-two students, 100% of seventh and eighth graders, participated in this year’s exam. The vast majority, 80%, earned scores that garnered achievement ranging from Cum Laude (with distinction) to Gold Medal (Summa Cum Laude) and even perfect score. All RCDS students take Latin in seventh and eighth grade in addition to their World Language selection of French or Spanish. The aim is for students to gain proficiency in reading and translating while learning the impacts of classical Rome on modern American life and society. Latin has also been found to help expand students’ English vocabulary, foster critical thinking skills, and strengthen the foundation for language learning, particularly with Romance languages that are derived from Latin. Latin Teacher Dr. Stephen Gaetano said this year’s results are a

testament to students’ hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Dr. G is also known for injecting Latin scholarship with a great deal of fun. A toga party is held the day before the National Latin Exam, to review for the test and celebrate their knowledge of the content. Dr. G also involves the greater RCDS community in helping prep students for the exam. He distributes index cards with practice questions on vocabulary, grammar, culture and history to homeroom teachers as well as other faculty, administrators, and staff. “Teachers can ask students questions with any free time they have,” said Dr. G. The Latin teacher estimates 1,200 questions were asked of students prior to the exam this year. “Everybody is participating,” he stated. “It’s been a labor of love.”

Summer Safety Tips for Pets Summer is almost here and this “fun in the sun” season also happens to bring with it some hazards – especially for pets. To make sure your pet’s summer season is as fun and safe as possible, keep these few safety hazards in mind.
#1: Sun & Heat High summer temperatures and bright sunny days can mean dehydration, overheating, and scorched paws. Heatstroke is a dangerous situation and can be deadly if not recognized and corrected immediately. Pets cannot cool themselves as well as people, because they have only a few sweat glands on their feet, and they rely on evaporation from their mouth surfaces as they pant.
Hot Dog IT’S
SUMMERTIME!
Pets with heatstroke can quickly begin acting abnormally, and may display the following signs: • Incoordination • Vomiting
• Diarrhea • Collapse
If you think your pet is suffering from heatstroke, take them to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately.
#2: Toxic Chemicals The warmer weather of summer brings with it several fun outdoor activities. However, these activities also bring new opportunities for potential pet exposures to harmful and toxic substances. The following items should be kept away in a safe, secure location and out of reach from your pet: • Pool Chlorine • Sunscreen • Citronella
• Insect repellent • Weed killer
#3: Parties & Barbeques Summer months, brings sweet treats! Backyard BBQs are the staple for gatherings on warm summer evenings. Commonly these BBQ’s provide easy access to some dangerous foods for your pet. These include:
• Corn cobs • Alcoholic Beverages • Grapes/Raisins
• Chocolate • Any food sweetened with xylitol
It is important to remember the snacks enjoyed by you should not be shared with your furry friend, as even one meal of these treats could cause digestive upset. Ensuring to provide specific treat options for your pet at your BBQ will help ensure your furry friend is truly invited to the party.
#4: Fireworks & Thunderstorms The unpredictable loud booms, cracks, whistles and flashing lights of fireworks or a thunderstorm is an enjoying spectacle to some but may mean bad news for pets. These loud noises can make pets anxious and stressed out, causing them to shiver and hide. Support your pet by making them comfortable in the following ways: • • • • •
Set up a safe space as their “go-to” hideout Cozy up with your pet to provide a sense of safety Distract your pet with toys, treats or their favorite games Pull down the blinds to cut off any visual stressors Turn on some tunes with either calming music or the TV to minimize the sound
We hope you enjoy a safe summer, but if things go awry, and you need immediate veterinary care, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls offers round-the-clock emergency service. Learn more at RedBankVet.com.

The Parker Family Legacy Room Opens with New Exhibit Ancestral Ascension Presentation Coaching, Executive Coaching, Leadership Corporate In celebration Workshops, of the 3rd anniversary of Seminars, the opening of the Conference Keynotes,Business Development T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, the non-profit Foundation announced the opening of the Parker Family Legacy Room to honor a family of doctors, dentists, and educators, who were the vanguard of Black pride and upstanding civic leaders in the Red Bank community for more than 80 years. Ancestral Ascension, a permanent exhibit, tells the story of enslaved people, who ascended to unprecedented heights. The exhibit opened to the public on Memorial Day weekend. Sponsored by Monmouth Medical Center/RWJ Barnabas Health, the exhibit is filled with circa photos that date back to 1916, when Dr. James Wesley Parker opened his first storefront medical practice at 254 Shrewsbury Avenue, on Christmas Day. His son, Dr. James W. Parker Jr. followed in his father’s illustrious footsteps, along with Sr. Parker’s nephew, Dr. James Alvin Parker, a dentist. They were all serving the Greater Red Bank community at the same time. Dr. Parker Sr. built his reputation on “curing” the Swine Flu that was associated with the 1918 pandemic. Collectively they were known for treating patients even if they couldn’t afford to pay for the visit. In 1955, Dr. James Parker, Jr. became the first Black doctor on staff at what was then Monmouth Medical Hospital and Riverview Hospital. There will also be a companion exhibit titled: “Black Firsts in Medicine in Monmouth County,” on display at Monmouth Medical Center that spotlights those pioneering physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and other medical professionals. That’s due to open the early part of June. The Drs. James Parker Boulevard was named after the three doctors in 2001. Today, the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center is proudly located on this street. Therefore, it seems only fitting that this center for research in Black culture is positioned to tell the rich history of the Parker family, while the Parker Family Health Center continues to uphold the legacy of the Parker family, by serving the most vulnerable people who are uninsured. The T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. For more information, visit tthomfortuneculturalcenter.org.
