This SUMMER!

Create Your Own Private Oasis!

Fireworks and flags, BBQs, movies on the beach, frozen cocktails, and homemade lemonade on the boardwalk - it’s July at the Jersey Shore! Along with the sights and sounds of summer, the Fourth of July reminds us of the spirit of our great nation. It’s a time to pause and reflect on freedom, unity, and all it means to be Americans. This month at CM, we’re honoring that spirit and taking that intangible essence in some new directions. Our cover story, A Place Where Sand, Surf & Song Bring Healing, shares the story of two local women who have taken a spirit of compassion, coupled it with inspiration, and created a refuge for women battling cancer. Singer, songwriter Sarah McLachlan, a force for philanthropy for women and children, admired the women of Mary’s Place so much, she is lending her voice to support their mission. Our story, on page 31, explains how and why, and gives a glimpse into the heart of a world-renowned performer.

We will custom design with flowering shrubs and evergreens a landscape design that will suit your needs. Stone Walls | Pool Settings | Total Landscape Designs | Renovations

A new feature, called Beyond the Brand, similar to our Meet Your Neighbor features, will introduce you, our readers, to local companies with true entrepreneurial spirit. This month we caught up with the owners behind one of Monmouth County’s most decorated food trucks, Jonnie G’s. A spirit of giving back permeated Eagle Oaks Country Club’s Honor Day. Our story and pictures on page 14, share how $275,000 was raised for local military families as they were provided a wonderful day of fun, education, and relaxation. As ever, the staff at CM thank our military and first responders for all they do. Finally we honor the spirit of bringing joy to others. The Monmouth County Film Festival takes place August 10th through 12th at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, but this month is packed with events leading up to the big weekend. We’re proud to sponsor the event and keep you up to date on all that’s happening on our social media sites, website, and beginning on page 48. At CM, we strive to offer a mix of ultra local news combined with exciting features that bring the outside world into Monmouth County. We thank you for your loyalty and wish you a fun, safe, and spirited July! All my best,

On May 20, 2018, the sun was shining as over 150 guests gathered at Rumson Country Club to celebrate the 7th Annual ‘Beacon of Hope’ fundraising event benefitting Shore House. Shore House was recently recognized as New Jersey’s first Accredited Clubhouse, joining the ranks of over 320 Accredited Clubhouses worldwide providing resources and support for those diagnosed with chronic mental illness

Among the guests was Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling, who re-affirmed his commitment

and support of Shore House and presented Resolutions recognizing event honorees Monmouth University, CPC Behavioral Healthcare, as well as the Shore House Founding Board Members who have worked so hard to get Shore House to this important milestone. Members of the Clubhouse mingled with supporters as Dr. Ralph Aquila, Medical Director at Fountain House in New York and one of the world’s leading community psychiatrists and mental health advocates, spoke about the significance of Shore House attaining accreditation status as the only Clubhouse serving the entire state of New Jersey, and the benefits this will have for Clubhouse members, and the whole community.

Shore House is so grateful for the generous support of all those who attended, sponsored

and contributed to make this important annual fundraiser such a resounding success. The event raised over $65,000, it was a wonderful celebration of a milestone achievement, and most importantly, an effective way to raise awareness for the important work of Shore House in empowering and enabling Clubhouse Members living with mental illness to see their strengths past their diagnoses. For general information and information about joining or volunteering at Shore House, Dr. Ralph Aquila and Cathy Smith

Monmouth Museum Hosted

Fashionable Luncheon By Susan Murphy Early in June, the Monmouth Museum welcomed 130 guests to a Fashionable Luncheon at the Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury. The fundraiser, which included a fashion show presented by Ann Marie Elia of 606, located in Fair Haven, was organized by The Friends of the Monmouth Museum in order to benefit the arts and education programs of the Museum. The Friends consist of a group of volunteers who support the Museum’s educational and exhibition offerings by organizing a fundraiser in the spring, summer and fall. The Friends have become life-long friends through the camaraderie they develop by planning fundraisers for the Museum and when hosting several of the opening receptions for the art exhibitions. The time, energy and enthusiasm the Friends contribute are greatly appreciated by the Board of Directors and Staff of the Museum. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the Museum, contact Helen Brown at 732.224.1993 or by email at info@monmouthmuseum.org.

Giving Hope to Heroes: Eagle Oaks Raises $275,000 Photo Credit: Tom Zapcic Photography Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club held its 10th Annual Honor Day Military Event in support of the courageous men and women who stand in defense of our country’s freedom. The event raised more than $275,000 for Hope For The Warriors, a national non-profit that provides a full cycle of care through its programs to restore self, family, and hope to post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen across the country. The day included helicopters landing on the driving range, followed by a special afternoon appearance by the West Point Parachute Team featuring four members jumping into cheering crowds. The event culminated with a dinner for all guests, with Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as keynote speaker. Lieutenant General Flynn is known for his key role in shaping US counterterrorism strategy and dismantling insurgent networks in Afghanistan and Iraq. Brian F. McCauley was honored as a distinguished guest for his decades of service to the United States including the United States Marine Corps, United States Secret Service, and the FBI. “We know that freedom is not free,” said Domenic Gatto, Chairman and President of Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club. “It is our privilege and honor to host a well-deserved day of fun and relaxation for these courageous and brave men and women who so valiantly and selflessly serve our country. Our members are proud and honored to share their club for the day.” 2018 Honor Day hosted more than 350 active duty service personnel representing all five branches of the military, and produced educational activities for more than 300 local school children. Military personnel were treated to a day of country club living, relaxing in a world class clubhouse and playing golf on a championship caliber golf course designed by Johnny Miller & Jack Nicklaus. Invited school children toured military displays highlighting various state of the art military technologies, interacting with military personnel, and learning about the practical application of the equipment and technologies. Eagle Oaks Honor Day, a New York Fleet Week tradition, is held annually on the Thursday before Memorial Day. Those still wishing to donate may visit hopeforthewarriors. org/honorday2018. 1 - (l to r) Lieutenant General Michael Flynn; Domenic Gatto, Chairman & President of Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club; and Joseph Cary, Honor Day Co-Chair 2 - Lieutenant General Michael Flynn (center) with Colts Neck HS JROTC members Robert Schandall, John Pezzolanti, David Dong & James McNamara Jr. 3 – Joe Cary & Kim Pillar, 10th Annual Honor Day Co-Chairs 4 - Active duty service men and women dining in the St. Andrew’s Grille 5 - Linda McHale (left) and Audrey McCauley (far right) with the West Point Parachute Team 6 – Volunteers from Saint John Vianney High School

No Pet is Too Unusual for RBVH a mass removal on a goldfish, spay surgery in a gecko, bladder stone removal from a tortoise, CT scan on a rabbit, fracture repair surgery on a turkey, infectious disease testing on a honey bee hive, vaccination in a pot-bellied pig – there is never a dull moment in the Avian and Exotics Department at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital’s (RBVH) Tinton Falls location. We see a multitude of species from pet tarantulas to wallaby! On any given day, we may treat rabbits, parrots, chickens, ferrets, turtles, frogs, goldfish, rodents, and lizards. We are proud to be the only hospital in the area with two exotic animal specialists providing care seven days a week. While the term “avian and exotics” may suggest exotic pets only, our specialists are trained in the broader discipline of zoological medicine, which encompasses exotic pets, zoo collection animals, and wildlife. We strive to provide the highest level of care to exotic species by working collaboratively within the exotics department, as well as with other specialists in the hospital to elevate the options and care available to our patients. The Avian & Exotics Department also provides an internship program for graduate veterinarians starting their specialty training in exotic and zoological medicine. This supports the education mission of RBVH by creating future exotics specialists and assists in the advancement of the field of exotic and zoological medicine. Our specialists have over 20 years of combined experience with exotic pets, zoo animals, and wildlife. Dr. Brynn McCleery and Dr. Emi Knafo are both residency trained in exotic animal medicine, have additional training in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures, and are experienced with exotic animal surgery and anesthesia. Dr. McCleery is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice, and Dr. Knafo is a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine. Our team also consists of four extraordinarily talented and caring veterinary technicians and one veterinary assistant. The Avian & Exotics technicians and assistant are specially trained in the husbandry, handling, and medical care of exotic animals. At Red Bank Veterinary Hospital (Tinton Falls), we offer advanced diagnostics and treatments, primary care, grooming, and medical boarding for your exotic pet. Dr. McCleery and Dr. Knafo are also available to consult with private collections, zoos, aquaria, apiaries (honey bee yards and beekeepers), and aviaries. House calls are available on a case-by-case basis to help reduce the stress of travel and a hospital visit for your pet. House calls are also useful for koi ponds, large collections of animals, or large animals that may not easily travel to the hospital (kangaroo, exotic large cats). We recognize that the species is irrelevant to the bond that exists between you and your pet, and that’s why we strive to offer the highest level of care to all animals. Appointments are available Sunday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition, our emergency department is open 24 hours a day for exotics emergencies.

Fur, feathers, scales and wings— these are a few of our favorite things!

Best friends come in all shapes, sizes—and species. And RBVH’s Avian & Exotics Department is here to give each and every one of them the very best care. Emergency, General, Specialty Care— we’ve got your pet covered. Also treating pot-bellied pigs and honey bee colonies!

Intuitive Eating: Making peace with food (l to r) Meredith O’Brien, LCSW (founder), Carianne D’Oriano, LPC, Tatiana Grant, LPC, NCC, Barbara Tatum, LPC, Jessica Lupon, LPC, John Muldoon, PHD, LPC

Do you find yourself chronically dieting without any sustained success? Do you find that you have a list of food rules that you need to follow and if you don’t you beat yourself up? Do you find yourself eating based on external cues instead of internal ones? If yes, Intuitive Eating may be for you. Intuitive Eating is a personal process of honoring your health by paying attention to your body and meeting your physical and emotional needs. It is a journey of discovery in building a healthy relationship with food. Created by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN in 1995, this revolutionary program has helped many people get off the diet roller coaster and make peace with food and rediscover the pleasure of eating. There are 10 principles of Intuitive Eating that work in two ways- to

help you gain body attunement which is the ability to notice physical sensations that arise in your body such as hunger and fullness, and to remove any obstacles that get in the way of attunement. As a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, I am honored to teach these principles to my clients. The ten principles are: 1. Reject the diet mentality

What will sustain me? What will satisfy me?

2. Honor your hunger

What am I in the mood for?

3. Make peace with food 4. Challenge the food police 5. Feel your fullness 6. Discover the satisfaction factor 7. Cope with your emotions without using food 8. Respect your body 9. Exercise- feel the difference 10. Honor your health- gentle nutrition

Intuitive eating focuses on respecting and valuing your “here and now” body. The philosophy shifts awareness away from calorie counting and rigid food rules to understanding how the food connects with you. Some questions you may ask yourself are:

Intuitive Eating is not a pass or fail process, rather it is a bunch of small eating experiences that lead to opportunities to learn about your body. Self-compassion is a critical component of the program. It allows you to have a neutral understanding and the ability to practice kindness instead of criticism.

Currently my practice is running an Intuitive Eating Group on Tuesdays from 7pm-8pm for adults 18 and over. Please call 732-977-9729 for additional questions and to join the group. - Meredith O’Brien, LCSW

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), liposuction was the #1 surgical procedure in 2016 with 414,335 procedures performed. It was also the most popular surgical procedure among both women and men. So, why are so many men and women getting liposuction? Liposuction is fat removal surgery. In fact, it’s the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among men and women ages 3564 and it’s one of the best procedures to refine body shape. Sometimes, even at your goal weight, you may have bulges in places you’re not fond of. Those fat pockets can make you look out of proportion and your clothes not fit well. If these lumps and bumps bother you, liposuction may be right for you. Liposuction can better balance out these problem areas. In addition to getting tailored results, lipo covers the big concerns people have when it comes to cosmetic plastic surgery. It’s relatively quick, less invasive for fast recovery and more affordable. The national average physician’s surgical fee for liposuction is $3,347. Facility fees, anesthesia and other surgical costs are added to this figure. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, meaning, you’ll go home the same day. It can be safely performed using local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A thin tube will be inserted through a small incision and fat will be suctioned out. The procedure takes between 45 minutes to two hours depending upon the amount of areas being treated. Based upon the type of work you do, your return to work can be as soon as a few days after surgery. You’ll most likely only need over-the-counter pain tablets to manage post-operative soreness. You’ll wear a compression garment for a while to minimize swelling and encourage skin contracture. Scars should fade to barely visible. It’s typically a "one and done" cosmetic surgery. Lipo removes fat cells from the body. Fat cells do not multiply so they won’t grow back. The remaining fat cells and fat in other locations can still get bigger or smaller based on diet. So, you’ll want to maintain eating habits based on your desired weight and look. When choosing a doctor to perform liposuction on you, make sure you are talking with board-certified plastic surgeons. Review their before and after photos to see that their aesthetic style appeals to you. You’ll want to choose a physician who regularly perform liposuction so they are familiar with the tools and how to use them. A PLACE WHERE

Sand, Surf & Song BRING HEALING BY CATHY PADILL A

Sarah McLachlan will host sold-out benefit concert for Mary's Place in Asbury Park.

The ocean

has long inspired songs and verse of the soothing power of the sand and salty air. Two local women went beyond the words and found a way to use the healing nature of the surf to help other women in need of peace. Nestled on the quiet beach of Ocean Grove, Mary’s Place by the Sea is assisting women from all over the country who are receiving treatment for cancer. In the three-story Victorian home, visitors find rest and a place to regroup and regain strength. CONTINUED ON NEX T PAGE

On July 28, sand and surf will once again inspire song as Sarah McLachlan, the three-time Grammywinning singer and songwriter, brings her emotional ballads and hauntingly beautiful voice to Monmouth County to support and encourage the nonprofit. In partnership with Grammy-winner Patty Griffin, the two will give a sold-out benefit concert at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. The Canadian singer, who founded the Lilith Fair tour and has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, is no stranger to the pain cancer can cause. “I’ve actually lost my mom, my dad, and my brother to cancer, so I know the pain of watching someone you care about become so sick and the relentlessness of it all,” shared McLachlan. “Caregivers can often feel helpless, and any respite is wonderful. Mary’s Place offers that, a calm moment in a very tough struggle, and I applaud the work they are doing.” When the idea for Mary’s Place came to Michele Gannon, she and co-founder Maria McKeon shared their vision by reaching out to oncology offices and groups supporting women with cancer. The response was immediate. The need for a place for women with cancer to go and be surrounded by love and understanding was real; a place where cancer was a common denominator, but not the defining attribute; a place where taking a deep breath, sharing challenges and experiences, and recognizing the needs of the whole person was the focal point. “We are thrilled to have these two incredibly talented, Grammy Award winning artists dedicate their time and musical talents to benefit women with cancer,” said Gannon, President and Co-Founder. “This concert represents exactly what Mary’s Place by the Sea is all about: women helping women in their time of profound need.” In June of 2016, Mary’s Place opened the doors to a new, custom-built, state-of-the-art home just a block from the Ocean on Main Avenue in Ocean Grove. Since its founding, Mary’s Place has welcomed more than 8,000 women, and continues to be a safe haven for women with cancer. Mary’s Place provides services that complement medical treatment, including oncology massages, nutrition education, individual counseling, expressive writing, reflexology, Reiki, guided meditation, prayer, and yoga at no cost to the guests. “A friend is involved with Mary’s Place and asked me if I might come and help out, and it was an easy yes after hearing about their services,” says McLachlan. “I love New Jersey, having spent some time there a few years back at the beach. The people are great, the water is warm, and there is surf!” ARROW-ALT-CIRCLE-RIGHT For more information, or to donate your time or treasure, visit marysplacebythesea.org. SAR AH McL ACHL AN

A One-Woman Force for Good

Co-founders Maria McKeon & Michele Gannon

THE STRENGTH OF LILITH AND MARY

Women Inspiring Women In 1996, when Sarah McLachlan was organizing her festival of all-female artists, she needed a name. A friend told her the story from Hebrew mythology of Adam’s first wife before Eve. Her name was Lilith. Known as a cautionary tale because she had insisted on equality and then left the Garden, McLachlan found Lilith to be the perfect protagonist. Lilith Fair was born. In 2009, when co-founders Michele Gannon and Maria McKeon first started their non-profit, they rented two rooms at a bed and breakfast in Ocean Grove. The idea for the retreat had come to Gannon one night after she had been sick in bed with the flu. A mother of three, she experienced how challenging it was on the household for the ‘mom’ to be sick. She realized how much harder that struggle must be for women with an on-going illness like cancer. When Gannon shared her idea with her friend Maria McKeon, she found not only a sympathetic ear but a willing partner. Being prayerful women, Gannon and McKeon welcomed their first guests by asking themselves what Mary, the Mother of Jesus, would do. They looked to Mary as a symbol of faith, hope, kindness, humility, and most of all unconditional love. These were the virtues that would shape their organization. Mary’s Place by the Sea was born.

In the 1990s women musicians found it challenging to get air time on the radio, and touring slots were nearly impossible to find. Young female music stars like Jewel, Tracy Chapman, Sarah McLachlan, and Sheryl Crow had to fight for their spots, as unspoken quotas would not allow too many female singers in a row. In 1996, McLachlan organized a mini festival that would ultimately turn into Lilith Fair, the exclusively female festival of singers that would revolutionize music for female artists and raise millions of dollars for charity. For every ticket sold, $1 was donated to a women’s shelter. McLachlan was 28 at the time. McLachlan is a celebrated singer and songwriter with more than 40 million albums sold worldwide. She has received three Grammy Awards and twelve Juno Awards over her career and was recently inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. McLachlan is known for her philanthropic efforts and has raised millions of dollars for women’s charities. In 2002 she opened The Sarah McLachlan School of Music, providing top quality music instruction to at-risk and underserved children at no cost. When announcing the benefit concert, McLachlan said of Mary’s Place by the Sea, “It’s a wonderful place for women to go when they’re healing from cancer. I hope you can join us!” For more on McLachlan, visit SarahMcLachlan.com

Brookdale Foundation Scholarship Ball

Raised Over $186,000

Brookdale Foundation Scholarship Ball Co-Chairs Carol Stillwell, Candy LanganSattenspiel and Karen Escobedo.

Community members helped the Brookdale Community College Foundation raise a record amount for local students while honoring Warren Diamond and Maureen Lloyd at the Brookdale Foundation’s 2018 Scholarship Ball, held on May 18 at Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale. The event raised over $173,000 with net proceeds of $145,000 for student scholarships and support services at Brookdale. Proceeds from the event will support the “Building Minds, Building Futures” Scholarship Fund, which will provide nearly $600,000 in scholarships and grants to more than 600 Brookdale students this academic year.

Latonya Brennan, Carl Guzzo, Jr., College President David Stout and Les Richens. Brennan, Guzzo and Richens are College Trustees.

Diamond, CEO of American Real Estate Management, lifelong Rumson resident, and avid supporter of local causes including Monmouth Medical Foundation, the Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, The ARC of Monmouth County, Hackensack Meridian Health, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Environmental Cleanup, the American Cancer Society, the Where Angels Play Foundation, the Women’s Philanthropic Fund, the Visiting Nurses Association, and the Brookdale Community College Foundation, said “education is not such a good deal if we only teach the students to make a living; teach our children how to make a life,” before noting, “it is incredible, the array of classes that Brookdale offers.”

Honorees Maureen Lloyd and Warren Diamond

Lloyd has served as President of the Monmouth County Park Charity Fund (MPCF) -- which has distributed over $9,400,000 to nonprofit agencies and healthcare facilities that serve Monmouth County residents, including the Brookdale Foundation -- for the last nine years, co-chair of the Meridian Health Gala, the Rumson Country Day Gala, and currently serves as Chair of the MPCF Kentucky Derby Celebration. Lloyd, who has been honored by Pacific Opera, The ARC of Monmouth County, The Jersey Shore Council of the Girls Scouts, and The Tigger House Foundation for her philanthropic work, began her speech by thanking the crowd, “not for me, but for all of you supporting Brookdale.” She said that being honored is not as important as the actual meaning of the work being done. “Brookdale is not only a stepping stone but a seamless stepping stone” for students to continue learning, and praised the college for transfer opportunities. “I commend Brookdale for being able to do everything they do.”

Tim Zeiss, Executive Director Foundation & Alumni Affairs

Since 2001, the Brookdale Foundation has provided over $5 million in scholarships and grants to nearly 7,000 students. For more information on the foundation and its scholarship programs, visit brookdalecc.edu/foundation.

DI VORCE TA L K

BY PE T ER C . PA R A S, E SQ.

NESTING NESTING IS A CONCEPT that has become popular in the age of collaborative approaches to divorce cases. Divorcing parties agree that the children will remain in the marital residence and the parents will rotate in (for their parenting time) and out (for the other party’s parenting time). This is seen as a way to give stability to the children during a period of upheaval in the family. Although the parents are separating and the family, as the child knows it, is falling apart, nesting is viewed by some as softening the blow for children by providing them with the stability of the house they know, even as the family they know undergoes a sea change. Although the supposed benefits of nesting

are highly questionable, even if nesting does provide some benefits, its costs (both monetary and emotional) are great and almost always outweigh its benefits. First, it requires both parents to have somewhere else to live when not exercising parenting time in the marital home. This means that the already financially stretched family budget will somehow have to support two additional residences. This is an extremely high price to pay. And even in those cases in which the parents are cooperative enough to share one additional residence for non-parenting time days, thereby reducing the number of households to support, both parties sacrifice privacy.

Neither can call either place home because both are being shared with an estranged spouse. Instead of severing personal ties and moving on with life after a failed marriage, nesting actually requires divorcing parents to create new entanglements by sharing two residences. And what about the mixed signals this sends to children? They no longer see their parents together but the family home is still occupied by them on a rotating basis. Instead of getting used to the idea that their parents are not getting back together by having two separate residences (even if one happens to be the marital home), the false hope, that the parents may reconcile and the family will be

reconstituted in its former form, is perpetuated. In highly acrimonious cases in which there is a significant economic disparity between the parties, nesting can create a tactical advantage for the economically advantaged spouse. This may unfairly cause the disadvantaged spouse to make economic (or other) concessions just to end the misery. An economically advantaged spouse can often afford a much larger, better appointed, and better located alternate residence, thereby, creating a higher degree of comfort on non-parenting days than the disadvantaged spouse can afford. The ages of the children and their psychological adjustment to the changes in the family also have to be considered in deciding whether nesting should be tried. Although their psychological well-being must be considered, a child’s penchant for manipulation may also be a factor. Nesting offers a child a significant measure of control that he may be ill-equipped to exercise. Perhaps the better plan for a child is to get him acclimated to the changing family dynamic by introducing him to the idea that his parents will live apart permanently and that he will maintain his strong bond with both in their respective residences. This helps him cope with the reality of his future. Isn’t this actually what’s best for him?

After reciting their daily prayers and the Pledge of Allegiance, they sang songs, several in Spanish, and took turns at the microphone speaking to the audience of family and friends. Now they are ready for First Grade!

That moment when...

RCDS Fifth Graders Inspired to Innovate like Geniuses

TEAMWORK TRIUMPHS

Fifth-grade students at The Rumson Country Day School demonstrated their ingenuity to peers, parents and teachers during a culminating Genius Hour showcase as the 2017-18 school year came to a close. Motivated by Google’s passion projects that allow employees to dedicate 20% of working hours to their own ideas, RCDS teacher Tony Iannacone challenged his students to explore their own passions through a process called Genius Hour. He married the concept with a Shark Tank inspired panel of teachers, parents and peers who asked questions and provided resources during a series of student-led pitches throughout the year. “I’m so proud of how the students progressed throughout the process,” said Mr. Iannacone. “Genius Hour required them to tap into their creativity, to take risks, to welcome mistakes, to effectively communicate their ideas and opinions, to accept critique and to give it respectfully.” The process required students to conceptualize, research, plan and execute their ideas. Genius Hour projects ranged from raising money for hurricane relief to creating an animal clothing line to learning new card tricks. One duo began writing a novel about acceptance and plans to pursue publishing. Another student wrote and performed an original song that expressed his emotions as a student at a new school. Eleven-year-old Michael Uzzi plans to continue working on his Genius Hour project this summer. After extensive research, he hopes to finalize a prototype for a light up surfboard that promotes safe surfing at night in style. “I was skeptical of Genius Hour at first because I didn’t know what to expect,” said Michael. “I got frustrated when I learned about obstacles that got in the way of my project, but Mr. Iannacone motivated me to keep going. I used my imagination and I worked hard. I realized I can actually do this.” Genius Hour provided students with an opportunity to develop life-long skills that RCDS regularly seeks to instill like problem-solving, critical thinking and perseverance.

Yoga...with Goats! You’ve most likely seen the videos or pictures on one of your social media accounts. Take a room full of people doing yoga and add…goats. It’s a new trend that started two years ago when a recently divorced woman named Lainey Morse discovered the goats on her Oregon farm helped her fight depression. She started having “Goat Happy Hour” each day and inviting friends to join. Her friends found the soft, gentle animals comforting, and before long a friend who is also a yoga instructor had a great idea. Morse’s first year in the Goat Yoga business brought in more than $160,000. Wildly popular, local organizations such as OASIS tlc are now having Yoga with Goats bring in money to support their causes. OASIS tlc is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote inclusion and acceptance of autistic individuals into their local communities. By establishing environmentally exemplary farm centers, they provide meaningful work, peaceful and healthy residences, and community interaction. Interested in joining the fun while helping a great cause? Both Hot and Soul Yoga and Synergy Hot Yoga Studios provide classes on the Red Bank farm a couple days a week for $30 per person plus a small registration fee that goes directly to OASIS tlc. Reservations are required, contact LaurieMOASIS@gmail.com for more information or visit www.oasistlc.org. Upcoming Dates: 7/7, 7/24, 8/14, 8/25, 9/11, 9/22 & 10/6.

Ten Years of Championship Sailing at CBA On June 2, Christian Brothers Academy celebrated 10 years of sailing as a school sport with an Anniversary Regatta at Toms River Yacht Club. Gathered there, where we use the Ocean County College fleet of 420 sailboats for our practices and regattas, were a mix of passionate alumni, current and past parents, and our current varsity sailors and coaching staff including my father, Jody Lutz, who has coached the team all ten years. Watching the events of the day, I couldn’t help but smile as I thought about what we have built over the past decade. Ten years ago I was a student at Christian Brothers Academy with a passion for the sport of sailing. It became my singular mission to connect the two and add sailing to the list of outstanding athletics at CBA. For several months I sat in CBA administrators’ offices trying to convince them a sailing team would be a slam dunk, using a basketball reference since the Academy had a championship hoops

50

program. Eventually, then-associate principal Ross Fales conceded to my persistence and gave us temporary club-team status. We impressed the Academy administration enough to be promoted to a varsity sport, and although it was scheduled for the year after I graduated, I achieved my goal and the program has prospered. High school sailing throughout the state has taken off in the last 10 years, with CBA being at the forefront of the sport’s development at the scholastic level. When the CBA administration gave the program the green light, there were fewer than eight other high schools with formalized teams. Today, there are upwards of 26 schools registered with the New Jersey Interscholastic Sailing Association (NJISA), which was incorporated in 2010 to govern high school sailing in New Jersey. CBA has cemented ourselves as the premier program in the state over the past decade.

Our team has won two state championships, multiple NJISA league titles, qualified for three Singlehanded National Championships, and qualified for the overall United States High School National Championship in 2017. We’ve also sailed in the most Mid-Atlantic District Championships of any New Jersey school since 2008 and have not been ranked outside of the state’s top-three in the past six years. We have had alumni go on to sail at some of the best sailing colleges in the nation. Our senior captain this school year, Michael Ehnot ’18, summed it up best at our varsity awards convocation at the end of May. He noted how, setting aside any championships won, CBA Sailing is a program with one-ofa-kind character. And that was never more evident than at our anniversary event. Our current team is very close, our alumni remain good friends, and our parents are super supportive. That is the definition of a successful program.

Historic Co-ed Cub Scouts Move Up to Wolf Rank Recently, Fair Haven Den 9 of Pack 127 Bobcat Cub Scouts moved up to Wolf rank. The historic part of this is that the Pack had the first co-ed Cub Scout den in Fair Haven history and possibly all of Monmouth County. Pack 127 took advantage of the recent rule change and three young lady cubs joined the Pack to participate in all of the camping and high adventure activities. Pack 127 leader Christopher Rodriguez said, “We are proud of the Fair Haven girls and boys that proudly achieved the Cub Scout rank of Wolf as a unit on their way to Eagle. These kids are focused on coming back in the fall to become Bears, possibly picking up a few more Cubs along the way; we’re accepting more applications.” Pictured is Den 9 of Pack 127 with leaders Dan Ramirez and Christopher Rodriguez. Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Recognize Holmdel Girls with Girl Scout Gold Award The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore honored 26 exceptional young women with the Girl Scout Gold Award on June 12. Three of the honorees, Dana Elderhorst, Emma Singleton, and Julia Wagner are from Fair Haven. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive and the most difficult award to earn in all scouting. For more than a century, award recipients have reported significantly higher levels of general success and achievement than their peers. The Girl Scout Gold Award, gives girls in 9th through 12th grades an

opportunity to engage in community leadership at the highest levels while addressing issues they are passionate about. The honor is earned by less than six percent of Girl Scouts annually. It requires girls to demonstrate their leadership skills by tackling a community or global issue in a tangible way with a minimum of 80 hours of community service is required for each project. Many universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award Girl Scouts and girls who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.

Dana Elderhorst, Fair Haven

Be Your Best Self

Dana worked with the nurse and principal of her local elementary school to understand the specific hygiene needs of their 4th grade girls. She developed a program and taught it as a supplement to their health education class. Dana worked with local retailers to get donations for the girls and also obtained a commitment for a washer and dryer to be installed at the school for the nurse’s use. The classes were well received and enjoyed by the girls. The school ultimately decided against installing the machines, but the school was pleased with the outcome of the project and the effect it had on the girls.

Emma Singleton, Fair Haven

The Crescendo Initiative

The goal of the Emma’s project, called the Crescendo Initiative, was to provide musical instruments and instruction to underprivileged children in the Red Bank community; she wanted to increase interest in musical education in the Red Bank Public Schools. Emma held the program at the Boys and Girls Club of Red Bank and gave weekly instruction to children at the facility. She felt that it was a very rewarding project and she will always be thankful for the opportunity to spread a love for music to young children.

Julia Wagner, Fair Haven

BEE Aware!

For her Gold Award, Julia became a beekeeper by installing and caring for two Italian honeybee hives at a local property in Rumson, New Jersey that grows food for Lunch Break. She then presented her experience from her project, what she learned in the process and educated students on how and why to save the honeybees at Deane-Porter and Forestdale schools. She chose her project because honeybees are an important aspect of our environment and their population is decreasing.

Little Silver Baseball Players Make It to The Big Leagues On June 9, the 13 and 14-year-old recreation baseball players from Little Silver got “the call” up to the big leagues. The two teams from Little Silver at this age group played a game at First Energy Park - Home of the Lakewood BlueClaws. It was the experience of a lifetime for the families who made the journey. They toured the stadium upon arrival and then took the field for a game under the lights on a beautiful, 70-degrees, summer night. Rick Brandt, Little Silver’s Baseball Coordinator organized the event and said, “This is a special group of boys who have represented our program well for many years. Playing at the BlueClaws is a thank you to all of them and their families for the years of dedication they have shown.” Little Silver, Rumson, Fair Haven, Red Bank, and Shrewsbury make up the local Two River Little League, which offers baseball and softball for 9-year-olds through 14-year-olds during April, May, and June. This is the fifth year of Two River Little League and the participating towns are seeing an increased interest since joining Little League International, a 78-year-old association dedicated to children playing baseball and softball. Every spring the Little Silver PTO and Recreation Department

organize “Little Silver Night at the Lakewood BlueClaws” where hundreds of families from Little Silver watch a game, participate in pre-game festivities and listen to the chorus children from Little Silver sing the National Anthem. In return for filling up the seats in May, the minor league affiliate to the Philadelphia Phillies invited the children from Little Silver to play a game at the stadium while the BlueClaws were out of town playing an away game. On June 9th, the stadium was home to Little Silver! The BlueClaws and the Little Silver community have a wonderful, long-standing partnership and support each other frequently.

Two River Locals Form “Four Shore Strings” Quartet By Donna Beriont

Though their first memories of playing together were almost 20 years ago, Chelsey Dokus, Maria Monblatt, and Angela D'Alotto have never lost touch. Chelsey, a cellist and Maria, a violinist, both grew up in Fair Haven and graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven High School. Angela, a violist from nearby Little Silver graduated from Red Bank Regional High School. The three string players first performed together as young musicians in The New Jersey State Youth Orchestra. When the three musicians reconnected after college, they began performing with the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra. This experience quickly led them to realizing that those years of playing together gave them a unique advantage when it came to playing together professionally. In addition to their full-time teaching careers, they began to grow their reputations as freelance musicians, performing together at weddings, banquets, and special events

in New Jersey and New York. It was not until the following concert season, that their quartet would become a reality when Victoria June, a violinist, joined The Monmouth Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Long Valley, Victoria is a string teacher in the Manalapan School District and a new Monmouth County resident. Within weeks, the four musicians began making plans to play together and scheduled their own rehearsal where they would play through string quartets. After

a long afternoon spent playing countless songbooks of quartet arrangements, they decided to establish themselves as a professional quartet. Chelsey Dokus said, "Four Shore Strings gives us the opportunity to play more intimate music in our own community, which is something that we are thrilled about.” For more information, email fourshorestrings@gmail.com or follow them on Instagram.

Sale of Military Bracelets Helps Veterans By Susan Murphy

The Vietnam Veterans of America New Jersey Shore Area Chapter 12 (VVA NJ) is selling American Veteran military bracelets to defray costs of their many projects that assist Veterans in Monmouth County. Beach

Etiquette Basics

BY HOPE DANIELS

Being at the beach is like sitting on a Hollywood movie set, there are A LOT of characters on scene. To your right is a bunch of college students ready to surf and party. To your left is a family of five with a colossal pile of toy sea creatures, buckets and diapers. In front of you is a retired couple with their summer reads and gigantic umbrella to shield them from the sun. Behind you are a group of girls that remind you of the ones you graduated high school with in their itty-bitty bathing suits, selfie sticks and boyfriend drama. And

then there is you and your crew with your own personal stories and beach agendas. No matter what part of the script you fall into many of us bury our beach manners in the sand. From rocking out too hard to leaving a pile of garbage behind, don’t forget every beach bum has one mission in mind, to kick back and relax, BUT we should never forget to respect! Here’s a list of need to know etiquette basics when sitting at the shore.

Don’t play your music too loud.

wants trash left by their towels or in between their toes. Please throw out your food, wrappers and gum.

From hip hop to soft rock keep your tunes at a moderate volume. Your neighbors may prefer lying in the sun in silence instead of listening to Broadway songs on shuffle.

Keep your PDA and bad language at bay.

Otherwise, earmuffs and blindfolds may become a beach bag essential.

Throwing a frisbee is fun, until it whizzes by other beach goers blankets or worse... their heads Best to keep your catches away from the crowds.

Eating sand is as appetizing as it sounds.

Obviously, you can’t be such a stickler if someone gets sand in your space but watching where you walk will help eliminate messing up another neighbor's resting place.

Attention those who litter and think no one is looking... someone is always watching. Of course, we have all made the mistake at least once, but no one

Drinking too much can provide a negative outdoor experience for all parties.

None of us adults need to be reminded about the consequences of consuming too much alcohol but doing your business in moderation is probably best especially when there are young families around.

We all love to people watch, but most of us have also been watched. Keep your jokes about the drunk dad dancing to Elvis and eye rolls at the stranger prancing around in a neon sequin string bikini on the down low. It’s never nice to stare or shame others. By the way you never know if the person next to you got the same swimsuit on sale.

Be polite.

It sounds easy, but there are times we must remind ourselves to say excuse me, please and thank you, even when we are competing to claim the best spot on the beach.
