A VERY CO COVID RENOVATION

By Donna Vitale, Owner World Class Kitchens

It was March 16 and I tuned in to one of many briefings that

to have our customers live without a kitchen or first floor for 3-4 months. It was time to make things happen.

were going to be given by Governor Phil Murphy over the next few months. Given the increase of 80 new cases in New Jersey over the weekend, effective immediately, all non-essential travel in NJ is discouraged, only essential businesses would be allowed open past 8 pm, all bars, restaurants allowed open for takeout only, all large gatherings canceled, and all other non-essential businesses allowed open with very strict guidelines. Soon to be closed completely. All I could think of was that we just demolished the first floor of the home that belongs to our customers Carol Ann and Rob Lalor.

When all of the rough electric plumbing and frame work was complete, and with our persuasion, the township would allow the inspections if the Lalors left their dwelling for the duration of the inspection and opened all windows and doors so inspectors were safe entering the home to inspect. Building, Plumbing and Electric Inspectors all came and left together and we were given the green light to move forward.

The Lalors kept their home ventilated and remained far away from crew (most time on the second floor). Crew was diligent in Upon hearing the news, I immediately called wearing masks and working long days to Aberdeen Township Building Department get this project complete. By the end of Carol Ann and Rob Lalor and my biggest concern was confirmed. Even week 7 this project that included a wall though this project fell into the category of We were very impressed with the down for an open concept, a half wall built, “essential” they were no longer going to be new kitchen cabinets, countertops and communication from Joe and Donna performing in-home inspections on occupied backsplash renovated, a fireplace remodeled as well as the dedication and caution residences. This was effective today and and 800 sq. feet of flooring was installed. provided by the crew during this would remain in effect until further notice. We promised the job would be complete uncertain time of crisis (As of the day this is written in early June in 7 weeks and the job was complete and this still remains in effect). even painted by the end of week 7… all with limited crew and extenuating circumstances. Now what? Well...this is construction and being the owners of World

Class Kitchen and Bath Design Center, thinking outside of the box to get the job done is nothing new to my husband and I as we personally manage every single step of a project installation. We promised this full renovation would be complete in 7 weeks and “until further notice” did not seem promising, nor was it acceptable

During the project, I joked with Carol Ann that she would always be one of the customers I would never forget. The same as the customers we demoed the day of Hurricane Sandy. There is never a dull moment in construction. But we are tough, rise to the occasion and live up to our motto: We’ll get it done; like us there are none.

Red Bank is OPEN FOR BUSINESS! The new Board of the Red Bank Business Alliance (RBBA) orchestrated a town-wide photoshoot, spearheaded by Alkmini O’Brien and Maria Molino, to welcome visitors and to let everyone know that Red Bank is back! More than 70 business owners and managers had their photos taken by four generous local photographers: McKay Imaging (Bob & Liz McKay), John Arcara Photography & Films, and Brandi Grooms Photography donated an entire day of production to capture the images. RBBA reminds us to please support local businesses – they are the lifeblood of our community.

Meet Your Neighbor:

Sal Izzo By Tom Zapcic | Photos by John Vitollo Sal Izzo Jr. of Shrewsbury is retiring after 68 years in the hairstyling business. Yes, you read that correctly, 68 years! Cutting hair and creating friendships have been central to Sal’s business, a long-standing community brand with deep multi-generational roots. I had the honor of receiving Sal’s last haircut and learned so much about his family’s legacy. His father, Sal Izzo Sr., gave me my first haircut in 1962. Here’s their amazing story of styling through the decades from my interview with Sal Izzo Jr. Tom Zapcic (TZ): When did your father start his first shop? Sal Izzo (SI): Red Bank, 1927 TZ: How old were you when you started working for him? SI: I was eight years old when I started shining shoes. When I was 15, my father asked if I thought I could cut hair. I cut my younger brother’s hair. He said I did a good job and the rest is history. I am the sixth generation of Izzo barbers with roots going back to Italy. My granddaughter, Paige, is the seventh generation!

saw their sons with new haircuts, they started sending their husbands. The phone rang off the hook! There was also no hairspray for men. One of our clients was a chemist and made the product for us that we used. TZ: What has changed with cutting hair through the years? SI: Many stylists only use clippers. I still use scissors as a way to get a better cut and layering for my clients. TZ: What has been your philosophy in business? SI: My motto has always been to treat people with respect. As a result, clients are more like good friends than customers TZ: What would you like to say to CM readers as you retire? SI: I want to thank all my clients who followed me throughout the years, especially the ones who were eight and nine years old when I started cutting their hair and who are now 76 and 77. They never went anywhere else for a haircut and for that I’m grateful.

TZ: When did you start as a full-time barber? SI: I graduated from high school in 1952 and started the next day working for my father full time. He taught me many of the techniques I still use today. I opened my first shop on April 1, 1963 in Middletown with my brother Anthony. TZ: What is your proudest achievement in business? SI: Being named in the Who’s Who in Men’s Hairstyling in 1970 after winning second place in Hairstyling for the State of New Jersey in 1968. Also, cutting a client’s hair until he was 104 years old. TZ: What was your biggest challenge? SI: There was no hairstyling for men in Monmouth County in 1963. We were the first to introduce it. We heard someone in Patterson was doing it and we went to him and to NYC for training. It was not easy at first. Men resisted the change. We held classes at Red Bank High School and once the mothers

Parker Family Health Center Receives Starbucks Award Parker Family Health Center (PFHC) of Red Bank was recently selected by the Starbucks Foundation Neighborhood Grants for COVID-19 Response to receive a $2,500 grant in recognition of Parker’s continued good work in the community. The health center, which is a free medical facility caring for Monmouth County residents without insurance, is celebrating its twentieth year in the midst of the COVID health crisis. Starbucks’s Neighborhood grants are intended to inspire increased volunteerism with nonprofit organizations. PFHC, like other volunteer medical facilities throughout the state, employs a core staff supported by local volunteers who donate their time and talents to the center. Parker is blessed with over 150 volunteer doctors, nurses, interpreters and other helpers lending their expertise to the mission. Many of Parker’s volunteers are retired and “at risk” so when the pandemic caused a lockdown except for essential workers, many of the center’s volunteers waited patiently at home until a telehealth service could be put into place and accessed off site. In the interim, Parker was delighted by the many individuals and community organizations that came out to support the center. A steady stream of visitors dropped by the center’s parking lot

with surprise deliveries from Outback; Antoinette’s Boulangerie; and The Globe; all donated by the Red Bank Rotary; Little Silver Helpers; local families; and others. Beautiful hand-crafted masks for children and adults arrived from SOSmatters and PFHC volunteer Jill Harris. Soul Kitchen of Red Bank shared their bounty of personal protection equipment. The Starbucks Neighborhood Grants program relies on their Starbucks’ employees to suggest grant recipients. To date, PFHC is unaware of its Starbucks’ admirer but acknowledges that Parker’s founder and past President, Dr. Gene Cheslock, is a frequent visitor to the Starbucks located at The Grove in Shrewsbury. This award solicited the following response from Dr. Cheslock: “It continues to amaze me how the worst-case scenarios can elicit the best from all of us. In the last few months, Parker has been overwhelmed with kindness from so many strangers. We have made so many new friends and partners from this crisis. Our only hope is that they all realize how grateful we are to them. With their continued support, we will come out the other side of this crisis even stronger than before.” More information about the Parker Family Health Center can be found at parkerhc.org.

Rumson Education Foundation Raises More Than 240K To Fund Grants for Schools BY SUSAN MURPHY

E

ach school year the Rumson Education Foundation (REF) has an annual grant cycle in which administrators, students, teachers, and the Superintendent of Rumson School District submit potential grants for funding. Grants awarded for the academic year of 2019-2020 were centered around the new agriculture curriculum, flexible seating, and LGBTQ. These three grants will be implemented into the 2020-2021 curriculum. The agriculture grant, proposed by one of the science teachers, provides an opportunity for students of all ages to participate in hands-on learning, foster real-world connections, and kindle student curiosity about sustainability and wellness through the development of an apple orchard and mushroom farm. This grant will supplement and work in conjunction with both the greenhouse and aquaponics programs that were previously funded through the REF grant cycle. The apple orchard and greenhouse updates have already been planted since the building is vacant due to COVID-19. A second grant will fund flexible seating in grades sixth through eighth. Research has shown that allowing students flexibility in their seating options has both physical and cognitive benefits: students tend to be less sedentary, more engaged, and show better on-task behavior which enhances learning for everyone in ways that sitting at a traditional desk all day can not. Twenty first Century learners are tech-savvy, and need to move, stretch, and find a learning place that is “just right” for them as individuals, enhancing the student-centered classroom. The overall objective of the LGBTQ curriculum grant is to provide the staff of grades sixth through eighth with quality professional development, resources, and

training in order to effectively integrate LGBTQ into the existing curriculum and instruction. The professional development, resources, targeted curriculum, and lessons will focus on the political, economic, and social contributions of LGBTQ individuals, as required by the NJDOE mandate, in a developmentally appropriate way. The REF raised more than 240K in a variety of ways. The funds came from generous private donations and sponsors, corporate matching, and two successful events such as the annual Golf Classic last September and Celebration for Education in January. Curran Scoble, who has been REF President shared, “The Rumson Education Foundation (REF) is pleased to fund this years’ grants, especially given the unprecedented times with COVID-19. We know they will enhance the curriculum and enrich the overall educational experience for the students in the Rumson School District. The success of the REF is directly attributed to our generous sponsors and donors throughout the community. I would like to thank our supporters and the work of those involved on behalf of the REF Board of Directors.”

Visiting Our Own Monmouth County

Allenwood General Store

There’s a long tradition of general stores throughout America but they have gone by the wayside courtesy of Walmart and Target. The Allenwood General Store bucks that tradition having stood roughly in the same place since the 1850s. The Herbert Family reinvigorated the general store in 1972 and family members still run it today. When you walk in, you will be greeted by the deli counter staff who wear t-shirts that read, “Got pork roll?” In addition to that famous Jersey specialty item, they have a full menu for take-out or eating outside. Don’t miss the back rooms! There’s an amazing collection of antiques, brick-a-brack, and craft items typified by the humorous sign, “This isn’t a museum. It’s junk for sale.”

With summer upon us and the current need for more outdoor activities and places to visit, we reached out to author R.C. Staab for helpful suggestions on where to go. His recently released book, 100 Things to Do at the Jersey Shore Before You Die, is a handy guide for fun days and exciting nights all along the New Jersey Coast. Listed below are great Monmouth County spots you may drive by often but infrequently stop to enjoy, as well as a few day trips a little to our south. Let’s raise a glass to a healthy, happy July and reacquainting ourselves with all our area has to offer. PHOTOS BY R.C. STAAB AND CATHY PADILLA

to October, jump onboard to sail from Atlantic Highlands in the Sandy Hook Bay and venture south into the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers by Red Bank, Rumson, Fair Haven, Middletown Township, and Sea Bright. You see the current homes of Jon Bon Jovi and Jon Stewart, the former homes of Telly Savalas and Geraldo Rivera, and the beach house featured in The Sopranos. Tours are two to three hours with live music Thursday evenings, a sunset cruise on Fridays, and a mansion tour Sunday afternoons. The newest boat is a 100-passenger paddle wheeler, the Navesink Queen, with a heated indoor space and a bar with drinks and snacks. This summer, Captain Dan is mostly offering small group cruise charters, morning trips for fishing, or afternoon, evening, and weekend trips under the Highlands Bridge. Visit: ClassicBoatRides.com

has been a fixture of Monmouth County for more than 90 years. What began in a rural farmland and orchard as a place to buy, trade, and sell livestock, farm equipment, and produce, is now a place to buy all those things (maybe not livestock) plus antiques and collectibles, clothing, tools, and much more. Open every Saturday and Sunday year-round, the flea market features five indoor buildings with about 300 vendors and a variety of taquerias and food stands. The action really takes place in a large open lot marked by temporary “streets” such as Fifth Avenue. With a low-cost seller price, Englishtown attracts all kinds of sellers from people looking to sell used items from attics or garages to vendors selling new products like iPads.

Englishtown Auction and Flea Market

Despite the name, Englishtown Auction is not an auction, but a giant flea market that

his heart is still in Monmouth County as evidenced by his store Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Growing up in Red Bank and Highlands, Smith dreamed of owning a comic book store. With profits from his movie Clerks, he opened up Secret Stash in 1997. At this one-of-a-kind store in Red Bank, geek out and buy merch and apparel related to Smith’s films and characters, like Jay and Silent Bob. If you’re into comic books and collectibles, then stop by and enjoy what one fan calls the “Disneyland for nerds.” Make sure to stop in the rear of the store to take a selfie with props from Kevin Smith’s movies including Buddy Christ from Dogma. lands overlooking the bay. You can have a very similar experience on a two-mile section of the 24-mile-long Henry Hudson Trail that follows a former railroad rightof-way along the shoreline from the marina in Atlantic Highlands to Popamora Point in Highlands. Walkers, runners, and bikers will find a well-tended, gravel and dirt path that was reopened last year after parts of it were washed away in Superstorm Sandy in 2012. In the heat of summer, head there for a cool morning walk in the shade. If you start in Highlands, you can finish your workout with a refreshing dip in the Sandy Hook Bay or join the faithful in throwing out a line in hopes of catching fluke, striped bass, or bluefish.

JBJ Soul Collective, Red Bank

“Where there is love, there is plenty.” That’s the manifesto of JBJ Soul Collective restaurants in Red Bank and Toms River. Run by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, these unique restaurants are part of an ongoing commitment by Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea, to provide food for those in need, as well as job training for people interested in being part of the food industry. At these restaurants anyone can partake, choosing from a set menu. You pay what you want with a recommended price of around $25. You may rub shoulders with the rock star and his family or share a table with in-need customers.

Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash

He’s a filmmaker, actor, comedian, podcaster, and comic book writer from Monmouth County and his name is Kevin Smith. Not sure who he is? You’ve probably seen one of his movies such as Clerks, Mallrats, or Chasing Amy or his reality cable TV show, Comic Book Men. Although he lives in Los Angeles,

with views of the New York skyline dotted with elegant sailboats and the sound of gulls overhead. Open to the public year-round, bring along some quarters for the tower viewers in Keyport and see the Freedom Tower up close. Numerous local restaurants are in walking distance in both towns offering adult beverages and food with a view. Few American concert halls have featured concerts by John Philip Sousa, Enrico Caruso, Kenny Rogers, and The Beach Boys. Even fewer have natural acoustics that conductor Leonard Bernstein once compared to Carnegie Hall. More than 120 years ago, Ocean Grove’s founders built this amazing, mostly wooden building, originally with 10,000 seats. Eventually, they reduced capacity to 6,000 but it’s still one of the largest auditoriums in the state. Among its features are one of the world’s largest pipe organs and a huge painted American flag (circa 1916) at the back of the stage with light bulbs that flash in an undulating

Pine Creek Railroad

The history of New Jersey Museum of Transportation’s Pine Creek Railroad is more complicated than switching trains in Grand Central Station. It starts with a group of railroad enthusiasts who rescued a steam-powered locomotive from the Raritan River Sand Company around 1950, renaming it Pine Creek No. 1. After some fits and starts trying to operate a little narrow-gauge railroad as an amusement attraction along two different state roads, the Museum finally found a home at Allaire State Park, which already was established as an 1830s historic iron works village. Today, the Museum operates a steam train on a narrow gauge, half-mile track that runs

through part of the park. The train yard is home to rare vintage pieces of railroad equipment, and admission is required for the train ride. If you want to see the Pine Creek No. 1 train, however, you’ll have to travel out west. It was sold more than 60 years ago and restored so it could operate at Disneyland. Visit: njmt.org

DAY TRIPS Doo Wop District, the Wildwoods

Taking its name from the rock sound of Chubby Checker and Bobby Rydell, the Doo Wop Motel District in the Wildwoods celebrates the mid-century or space-age architectural style of that era. With Vegas-like neon signs and giant plastic palm trees, these still-operating motels feature exotic names such as the Caribbean Motel and the Bel Air Motel, with more than 50 in Wildwood Crest alone. Stop by the former Surfside Restaurant, which has been turned into the Doo Wop Experience, including a retro-style malt shop and outdoor neon garden. More than a dozen wolfdogs and domestic-bred wolves at Howling Woods Farm have been featured in Vogue and Esquire, as well as music videos, television shows, and films such as Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. You can interact with, pet, and snap a selfie with the large, furry creatures during an hour-long tour. You can even practice your howling to get them to respond in kind with the classic wolf howl. Because New Jersey permits wolfdog ownership and surrounding states do not, this is the only related attraction within hundreds of miles. Reservations are required by phone, and the farm is open year-round every day except Monday. Visit: HowlingWoods.org

Island Heights

On busy Route 37 between Toms River and Seaside Heights, the turn-off sign for Island Heights is nearly invisible. Yet less than a mile south is the small river town of Island Heights, where a majority of its almost 400 structures were built during the Victorian era. Like Ocean Grove to the north, also on the National Register of Historic Places, the town grew from a Methodist camp meeting site in the late 1800s but never developed into a major tourist destination mostly because it sits on Toms River unlike its neighbors on the ocean. An outstanding example of the town’s architecture is the John F. Peto Studio Museum which the artist designed and built. Visit: IslandHeightsBoro.com/history

Pine Barrens

With more than 1.1 million acres, the Pine Barrens make for a perfect outing and is closer to the Shore than you think. Created in 1978, it is the country’s first National Reserve. Despite its size, it can be challenging to figure out how and where you can explore this vast area of our state. One of the busiest outfitters close to the Jersey Shore is Mick’s Canoe & Kayak Rental. It provides online video instruction and, on site, points you to the best trails of the Wading and Oswego rivers. For the more adventurous, check out Pinelands Adventures.

Tuckerton Seaport and Baymen’s Museum

Long before boardwalks and amusement parks, most people along the Jersey Shore worked in the maritime industry. At the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum 20 minutes north of Atlantic City, explore the life of a boat builder, fisherman, decoy maker, fishmonger, or volunteer who rescued people and boats from the Atlantic Ocean. Climb to the top of the reproduction of the Tucker’s Island Lighthouse to see how these men and women sailed out of Tuckerton Creek to Tuckerton Bay and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. Visit: TuckertonSeaport.org

Whale Watching in Cape May

Whale watching in Cape May dates back to 1987, a decade after the city revitalized itself as a tourist destination with a nod to Victorian architecture. Captain Ron Robbins started whale watching trips, leaving bait and fishing rods home in favor of binoculars and suntan lotion. With his vessel, the Holiday, a former fishing vessel, Ron slowly plied the waters of Delaware Bay and the nearby Atlantic Ocean, with great success finding Humpback, Fin, and Right Whales. Since then, two other companies have followed in his footsteps, offering multiple two-to-three-hour trips per day in season. There are almost always dolphins diving in the waves at the point where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, but the real stars of the show are the occasional whales. Sea Bright Author R.C. Staab From his first boyhood trip from Pittsburgh to Stone Harbor in 1965, R.C. Staab has found a passion for the Jersey Shore. Returning often, he was first a homeowner in Brigantine, and is now a homeowner in Sea Bright. For more than 40 years, he has been a tourism and culture expert who has been quoted by, and had photos published in, numerous publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the LA Times. With his interest and love for the Jersey Shore, R.C. approached Reedy Press in 2019 which welcomed an opportunity to publish the only Jersey Shore guide that covers the 130 miles from Sandy Hook Lighthouse to Cape May Point, 100 Things to Do at the Jersey Shore Before You Die. The book came out after the coronavirus started so it is only recently available in local bookstores. It is also available on Amazon, BarnesandNoble.com, and Target.com, as well as from at 100thingsjerseyshore.com. His website provides regular updates on which attractions, sites and Boardwalks are fully open to the public.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe at the Jersey Shore Your summer plans undoubtedly include a trip to the Jersey Shore with your furry friend. But, before you head out, protect your pet from summer hazards by following these three tips.

#1: Know the signs of overheating and heatstroke

Providing ample outdoor time is a summer luxury to our furry friends, but every pet has their limits, especially on a hotter day. Pets can become dehydrated, therefore be sure to provide free access to water throughout the day, take breaks in the shade, and avoid over exercise. If a pet over does it and becomes overheated, they may start to exhibit signs of: Excessive panting or difficulty breathing Drooling Weakness If you note any of these signs, encourage your pet to take a break from the sun in an air-conditioned building or vehicle and provide cool water. Recognizing signs at this stage is critical to prevent progression to life-threatening heatstroke. Heatstroke signs include: Incoordination Vomiting Diarrhea, which may be bloody or black Collapse If you think your pet is suffering from heatstroke, take them to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately. It is important to remember our pets that have flat faces, are overweight, or have heart and lung disease should be kept in air-conditioned or cooled areas, as they are more prone to overheating and severe heatstroke.

#2: Protect their Feet!

Asphalt temperature can creep up quickly on a hot day. When you are ready to take your pet on a walk, be sure to check the temperature of the ground with the “7 second test”. Simply place your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds- if it is too hot for you - it is too hot for your pet! Walking your pet on hot asphalt, brick, or cement can lead to painful burns. Monitor your pet’s paws after a walk. If you note redness, swelling, peeling of the paw pad, or bleeding, please seek veterinary care immediately. When able, consider walking your pet through a meadow, soft surface, or grass. Otherwise, consider walking your pet in the early morning or evening, when the ground is cooler to protect their feet.

#3: Pesky Bar-B-Q Treats

With summer months, comes summer treats! Backyard BBQs are the staple for enjoying those warm summer evenings. Commonly these BBQs provide easy access to some dangerous foods for your pup.

Ensuring to provide options for pet specific treats at your BBQ will help ensure your furry friend is truly invited to the party. As the summer began, many enjoyed increased sightings of marine mammals in our waterways. According to NOAA Fisheries, the law requires viewing of all whales to be from a distance of at least 100 feet, and the viewing of North Atlantic Right Whales to be from at least 500 yards away (that’s five football fields!). Dolphins, seals, and sea turtles must be viewed from at least 150 feet away. Check out this family of dolphins in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach and the two whales were photographed off of Sandy Hook!

VICTORY! New Jersey and New York Deny Pipeline Permits

“NESE (Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline project) is finally dead in the water! Three cheers for the hard work of the coalition on both sides of the ocean in the NY/NJ region, and the thousands of citizens who rallied to stop NESE,” said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of COA. “We salute Governor Murphy and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection for recognizing that this project would have devastated the environment, and is and will always be UN-NESE-SARY!” “This is a victory for the thousands of citizens and dozens of organizations that spent years and countless hours signing petitions, writing and sending comments, attending rallies, hearings, and meetings, and engaging their communities in actions to stop NESE once and for all,” said Kari Martin, Advocacy Campaign Manager of COA. “This is also a victory for our air, land, and water.”

“If approved, the project would have resulted in drastic environmental damage and locked the region into decades of continued reliance on climate-altering fracked gas. This denial is a tremendous win, future-proofing our environment for generations to come. We applaud the leadership of Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection,” said Peter Blair, Policy Attorney for COA.

COA’s Student Summit Goes Virtual For the past 31 years, hundreds of public and private middle school students (grades 5-8) have gathered at Sandy Hook for COA’s Spring Student Summit. Here, they are given the unique opportunity to be “scientists for the day,” participating in a multitude of hands-on presentations and field activities taught by outstanding local educational professionals and volunteers. While COA could not physically gather to host the 32nd Annual Spring Student Summit, it did launch the first-ever Virtual Spring Student Summit. More than 600 students from 15 schools in northern and central New Jersey participated online, learning about the ecological significance of the coast, its threats from pollution, and ways to be the solution. COA thanked the true-blue sponsors - The OceanFirst Foundation and Eloise and John Pound, for making this program possible.

The Atlantic Highlands Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the opening of the Atlantic Highlands Farmer’s Market. The market will be held every Friday, weather permitting, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm in Veterans Park on First Avenue, directly across from Borough Hall. The market will

awyers share a deep sense of responsibility to provide legal services to those who cannot afford to retain counsel. The Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County is celebrating its seventieth year of enlisting volunteers from the Monmouth Bar Association to do just that. The Legal Aid Society is governed by a hardworking Board of Trustees, comprised of lawyers and lay people who give countless hours of their time to administer the program, screen cases, enlist volunteer attorneys, assign cases to volunteers, and obtain feedback when each case is finished. That information is taken into account in evaluating how the program can best be maintained and improved. Over the past seventy years thousands of Monmouth County residents have had quality legal representation,

that they otherwise could not have afforded, due to the Legal Aid Society and its many volunteers. Justice Daniel J. O’Hern of the Supreme Court of New Jersey served as Trustee for many years. Justice O’Hern was, throughout his life, the embodiment of selfless public service. When he passed away in 2009, the Board decided to honor his memory by presenting an annual award in his name to the lawyer or lawyers who made a significant contribution to the justice system through pro bono efforts on behalf of deserving residents of Monmouth County and who demonstrated professional excellence through their altruistic service to the indigent and the community during their career. I am proud and humbled to report that I was selected as one of the

recipients of the 2020 Justice Daniel J. O’Hern Award from the Legal Aid Society. It came as a surprise and was certainly not the motivation for volunteering to serve, but is a special recognition of which I am extremely proud. Many other lawyers also gave freely of their time last year, as they do every year, to help provide as many members of our community with legal services. And that is another reason receiving this award is so special to me. Lawyers are often the brunt of criticism. It’s important to know how many lawyers are truly interested in serving their community. They don’t do it to be recognized and most often are not. But it’s important to know how dozens of lawyers every year in Monmouth County are working tirelessly and silently to provide this necessary service.

Fulfill Virtually Held Annual Gala to Continue Mission to End Hunger Fulfill held its Shine Light on Hunger Virtual Humanitarian Gala in June to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of its staff and volunteers. Since the pandemic struck, the nonprofit has served an additional 1,500,000 meals to feed people in need at the Jersey Shore. “I am in awe of their commitment,” said Fulfill CEO and President Kim Guadagno, the former Lieutenant Governor. As part of the Gala, Fulfill honored business leader David Indursky, President of ENCON, as the 2020 Humanitarian of the Year. Moved by the organization’s mission to end hunger, he pledged a leadership gift for the next five years and donated

ENCON services in excess of $100,000 to upgrade the energy infrastructure in Fulfill’s warehouse and install a new cooler that provides for fresh produce. A special thank you to Fulfill’s 2020 Gala Co-Chairs Rena Levine-Levy, Jeremy Neuer, and Chris Sullens for making the night extra special. The Virtual Gala was held in Fulfill’s main warehouse in Neptune on June 4, 2020, and it was live streamed on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. For more information on how to donate or volunteer, visit fulfillnj.org.

Achieve Long-Term Health Results with an Easy, Convenient, Fun Program FREE Personalized One-On-One Coaching Red Bank Regional High School’s cross country and track and field teams head coach, Brendan McGoldrick.

On May 29, Red Bank Regional High School’s cross country and track and field teams head coach, Brendan McGoldrick set out on a journey to pay it forward to those affected by COVID-19. He took on former Navy Seal and ultra-endurance athlete David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge. Brendan would run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours all in the name of COVID-19 relief. Coach McGoldrick asked supporters to donate to The Source Foundation’s COVID-19 relief fund. His goal was to raise $200. “We are so proud of Brendan and grateful that he came to us with this idea for raising money and for completing the challenge,” said Suzanne Keller, Supervisor of The Source. “The Source Foundation is one part of The Source, a school-based youth services program at Red Bank Regional High School,” said Keller. “We have been supplying rental assistance and funding for other Covid-19 related emerging needs such as funeral expenses to families in Red Bank.” After 48 hours of running, McGoldrick finished his challenge at Thompson Park in Lincroft with his best time of 36 minutes and 28 seconds. Several colleagues and students joined him on the trail to cheer from safe distances. “There was so much love and support in the air it was impossible to not feel great finishing up,” McGoldrick said. The goal of $200 was easily surpassed in a matter of hours as word spread via social media. To date, donations have reached more than $9,500. “We can assist 15 families with these funds,” said Keller, “as we head into the summer months, we want to continue to help families stay in their homes, feel safe and secure. The Source will provide rental assistance and meet the emerging needs of our community as long as it is able.” Contributions to The Source Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund has helped more than 27 families with rental assistance for the months of April and May. Ranney School Families Donate More Than $16,000 to Lunch Break

Ranney School families donated $16,242 to Lunch Break last month. This community service initiative was led by the Zugel family of Holmdel (Lucia ‘23 and Ashleigh ‘16) and the Uzzi family of Fair Haven (Christina ‘22, Michael ‘24, and Nicholas ‘29), who inspired other Ranney families to join them in donating either to Lunch Break or to support increased need-based financial aid. The families were inspired to lend

their support in response to the pandemic, which has led to job loss and significant hardship for families in our community. With schools closed and people working from home, food banks have seen a significant increase in the number of families seeking help. Ranney School students and families have a long history of supporting Lunch Break, including schoolwide food drives, volunteering at the organization, and donating produce grown in the school’s community garden. Ranney Head of School Dr. John Griffith, Lucia Zugel ‘23, and Dr. Griffith’s daughter, Claire, were on hand to present the gift to Gwendolyn Love, Executive Director of Lunch Break. Dr. Griffith shared, “I am immensely proud of these students and their families for their leadership, and am grateful for the generosity and strength of the Ranney community.” The Zugels shared, “Lucia was seeing the drastic increase of people depending on the food bank and was worried that with kids out of school that they wouldn’t get fed. We care very much about combating food insecurity through support of Lunch Break.” “So many people are struggling,” said the Uzzis. “We are proud to be part of a community that saw the need and responded in whatever way they could to help.” “It’s just overwhelming to say the least to see how the Ranney community embraces Lunch Break,” said Love.

RCDS Students’ School Assignment Evolves into COVID-19 Relief Effort Rumson Country Day School fifth-graders Andrew Rodrigues and Michael Malia seek fulfillment doing what they love – building websites, playing sports, and helping others. When the two aspiring entrepreneurs were challenged to explore their passions through a school assignment called Genius Hour, they leapt at the opportunity to work together. They never expected that their collaboration would evolve into a pandemic relief effort. “We’re friends, which helps,” 11-year-old Andrew described their successful partnership. “But we’re also both very determined and organized.” Tasked with conceptualizing, researching, planning and executing their own business plan, Andrew and Michael were eager to introduce a “How To” video series that married their sharp technology skills with their passion for sports. During the course of the school year, they participated in student led pitches that inspired them to sell branded “How To” merchandise through a website that they designed themselves. As the COVID-19 crisis escalated, Andrew and Michael decided to donate their profits, totaling more than $400, to pandemic relief. “When we first started, we were helping people by teaching them skills through our ‘How To’ videos,” said Michael. “As we learned more about what was going on in the world, we wanted to help others on a bigger scale. What better way than to donate the money we’ve been making.” Projects like Genius Hour provide students with an opportunity to develop life-long skills like problem-solving, critical thinking and perseverance. Guided by the school’s four pillars – Kind, Honest, Responsible, Respectful – RCDS students like Andrew and Michael are regularly recognized for their strength of character in addition to their academic achievements. Now, Andrew and Michael are donating 100% of every “How To” branded merchandise sale to COVID-19 relief. They hope to progress their business by eventually using advertisements and search engine optimization to increase traffic to their website. “We don’t plan on stopping anytime soon,” Andrew said. Meet Your Neighbors:

Franki DeSaro & April Martines

By LiliAnn Paras | Photo Credit: Abby Devey Franki of Middletown and April of Holmdel, describe their first meeting as “a divine alignment leading each of us towards our destinies.” The divine and destiny are constants throughout their story and led them to cofound a sanctuary for single mothers, children, and animals, firmly based in faith and positivity. The Sanctuary is already helping families, and the vision is to expand to a residential program. CM: What is the mission of Light to Earth Sanctuary? Our daily mission is to lovingly awaken each person towards their God-given purpose, by supporting their inner healing journey- physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Our organization also helps animals and is Christian based, although we joyfully serve single mothers, children, families, and welcome volunteers, from all faith backgrounds. All feel welcome and at peace on the land; we are family. CM: What types of events/services are held at the Sanctuary?

Many families at our farm have endured domestic violence, addiction, poverty, homelessness, loss of a loved one and much more. Presently, we offer one day workshops on art, cooking, and fellowship, and host retreats of various kinds on the farm for single mothers and their children. This year we created an organic community garden and all of the harvest will be donated to local families. Annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at the farm are magical experiences full of so much joy, gratitude, and love. Fellowship gatherings are personally one of our favorites. Believers of all denominations join to sing, make music, and pray for one another. Afterwards we all feast, laugh, rest, and enjoy life together over a shared meal. CM: Describe the farm, and how it became the location. The farm is surrounded by breathtaking views of rolling hills, a true oasis of God’s creation on earth. Although we do not yet own the farm, the owner, Avram Schmied, a 72-year-old Jewish man, has lovingly allowed us to serve families here since 2018. He told us, “This is a very special piece of heaven right here on earth” and is grateful that his vision for the land’s “des-

tiny and greatness” will continue. We are presently seeking to raise three million dollars to purchase the farm and call it our home! There is a custom built 6,500 sq. ft. three story home with apartment quarters, an 18, 000 sq. ft. barn/meeting space, two cottages, two working windmills, spring fed pond site and two fenced in pastures for horses, a shed with a root cellar, organic herb and vegetable garden, one acre poplar forest, and an underground fresh spring. CM: What is most rewarding? We love seeing people from all walks of life: diversity in ethnicities, faith beliefs, and experiences coming together to serve and support alongside one another. We did not realize we would also touch the lives of many of our team members and volunteers, who also have shared the varied struggles of our families. Some special memories include a young boy’s declaration that this had been the best day of his life and the other children begging their moms to stay or return soon. Some children had never seen the stars, the moon, or horses before! One mother shared she had not seen her daughter this happy in a long time. Another was hosting a fellowship gathering for women in recovery and seeing their hope. There is no greater reward than knowing and seeing love, joy and healing on the faces and hearts of those we serve. CM: What is the biggest challenge? Raising the funds to purchase our farm, and gathering the needed people-a grant writer, non-profit accountant, and a professional fundraiser-in order to reach the next level of our mission to create a 1-5-year residential program. Please visit our website to read our full miracle story and for ways to donate, join our team, attend our gala and more: lighttoearthsanctuary.org, or email us to schedule a farm visit or learn more: Lighttoearthsanctuary@gmail.com. CM: Favorite Quote “Faith doesn’t make sense, it makes miracles.”
