or she has been on one too many quarantine hiking trips and it’s time for a trip to the groomers. Either way, it’s not something you should skip out on. Experts say grooming is as important as bringing your pet to the vet for regular checkups. Though it may be tempting to simply give your dog a bath yourself, a professional will be better equipped with the tools and expertise to spot any health concerns that may be hiding underneath the fur. They will check your pet’s eyes, ears, and skin for cysts, blemishes, and infection. While most humans get haircuts simply to look nice or keep up with appearances, dog grooming is an important part of keeping your furry friend healthy. More than just your pup’s improved smell (we all know those rascals can work up a lot of stink during playtime), it’ll also restore your dog’s coat shine, improve skin health, reduce the chance of ear infections, and provide early detection or treatment for fleas and ticks. Still, with so many options
these days, how will you know who’s the right groomer for your fur baby? Look for professional grooming services that include technicians who are trained to accommodate dogs of all temperaments, so you can rest assured that even shy fur babies will leave feeling pampered. A healthy coat and neatly trimmed nails make for a happy, well-behaved dog. And hey, you might finally get a break from vacuuming the excessive shedding for at least a day or two. Many vets and specialists recommend getting your dog used to social interactions outside the home, and a day at the doggie spa fits this nicely. Social interactions will help reduce anxiety and allow your dog to be more outgoing. They might even make some friends while being groomed! We all want the best for our pets, so save yourself the hassle and treat your dog to a luxury day at the spa. It’s the leash you can do.

HOW HOSPITALS ARE KEEPING
PATIENTS SAFE DURING SURGERY
While we are still battling the COVID-19 pandemic and instructed to stay at home to slow the spread, an unsettling trend is occurring. People are so fearful that they will contract COVID-19 that they neglect medical issues that may require surgery. “Preparing for surgery can often be nerve-racking and scheduling a surgery in the middle of the pandemic can heighten that anxiety more than usual,” says David Dupree, M.D., F.A.C.S., General Surgeon and Chairman of Surgery at Riverview Medical Center. “We understand that some patients may be hesitant to have surgery but delaying care can be even more detrimental to your health.” SAFETY MEASURES Keeping you safe and healthy is our top priority both in and out of the hospital. In addition to Riverview’s already rigorous cleaning processes, we have implemented additional safety measures, which include the following: Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces Using the latest technology, including UV disinfection lighting, we sanitize rooms and surfaces to eliminate germs Separating patients with symptoms of COVID-19 to completely different areas of the hospital Frequently testing at-risk patients Aggressively vaccinating health care providers and other members of the community
SURGERY DURING COVID-19 “Delaying surgery can increase the potential for severe complications from surgical issues,” says Philip George, M.D., General Surgeon at Riverview Medical Center. “Avoiding treatment for conditions such as diverticulitis, appendicitis or a gallbladder infection, for example, can lead to perforation, abscess formation or other potentially damaging conditions if not cared for in a timely manner.” Our operating rooms are designed to keep both patients and clinicians safe during surgical procedures with extensive precautions including: After each procedure, the rooms are stripped of linens, curtains, and any other supplies. If items cannot be cleaned, they are discarded. Everything from the ceiling to the floor is sanitized with a disinfectant to rid surfaces of viruses and bacteria. All detachable items are removed, disinfected, and sanitized before returning to the room. Before the area is cleared to allow patients, frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches and faucet handles are thoroughly disinfected to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If your surgery requires admission, patient rooms follow the same cleaning protocols as the operating rooms to ensure that all surfaces are sanitized. Extensive cleaning is just one of our many safety precautions in place and our protocols are ever-expanding and evolving. If worries about the pandemic caused you to delay your surgery, you should feel comfortable obtaining surgical care with us.

Musician Johnny Kasun
By LiliAnn Paras | Photo: Marnie Dougherty Johnny Kasun of Fair Haven has released his first album, Point of Interest, highlighting a unique fingerstyle guitar playing technique and his original songs. Johnny expressed gratitude to his parents, Dan and Meredith, for supporting all his aspirations, his sister, Anna, for lending her voice to countless background harmonies and to his brother, Michael, for “listening to the same three second interval of a song a million times over.” Meet Johnny Kasun, the new talent in the local music scene. CM: What is the best music advice you’ve been given and who gave it? Johnny: One of my mentors, Tom Smallwood, simply said, “Play less.” I had fallen into the trap all beginners face: I was obsessed with playing as many notes as possible and never took the time to sit back and just listen. Once I approached my music from a more simplistic and purposeful perspective, I was able to progress much faster and write much more impactful songs. CM: When did you first become interested in creating music? Johnny: I was nine when, on one seemingly routine summer afternoon, my dad brought out an entry-level Fender Squier Stratocaster. He very patiently taught me a single-stringed version of Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. I spent weeks and weeks perfecting this simple part to the point where I’m sick of the song even to this day! Eventually, my parents signed me up for classical and electric guitar lessons.
16
CM: How did you develop the fingerstyle guitar playing? Johnny: I love classical guitar but all its rules were becoming a drag! Fingerstyle guitar is when the melody and accompaniment is played simultaneously by one musician on one guitar, adding a bit more “pizzazz” to classical guitar. CM: Do you play all the instruments on your albums? Johnny: Primarily I am a guitarist and vocalist. I learned piano, bass, and drums out of necessity since the majority of my music is recorded just by me. On Point of Interest, about half of the songs are played solely by me, while on the other half, keys, bass, and drums are played by my mentor, Todd Wright. CM: What is your creative process for composing songs? Johnny: It is quite freeform and heavily relies on how things “feel”. I typically begin with a melody or idea that has been floating around in my head for a few days. I sing it to myself repeatedly, trying to imagine all the possible directions it could go and continuously narrow down my options until I land with one that I feel is unique and satisfying. I tend to write the music before the lyrics, deriving from the fact that I began as a guitarist and then over time evolved into a lyricist as well. Once I finish the basic structure of a song, I start the recording process, which I consider a second writing stage. I often get ideas for new parts to add as I listen to how the song is developing.

CM: Besides your own music, what music do you most enjoy listening to? Johnny: I listen to any music that is good-whether it be pop, country, rap, or whatever- I’ll listen if it gets my foot tapping. Probably sixty percent of my music library consists of Classic Rock – that’s where all the shredding guitars are, how could I not love it? Some musicians I admire most and could not live without are Cory Wong, Vulfpeck, Pink Floyd, Jim Croce, Billy Joel, Tommy Emmanuel, the Eagles, Todd Wright, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Greg Koch, Joe Bonamassa, and the list goes on. Oh, and I can’t forget Spinal Tap! CM: Who is the dream person or band to collaborate with, and why? Johnny: Absolutely it is Tommy Emmanuel. On top of being one of the greatest performers and songwriters of all time, he is also an incredibly kind and humble man. I have been to many of his guitar workshop camps across the country and even had the opportunity to play with him on stage for a tune! I have tons more work to do before I’ll be on a collaborating level with Tommy, but maybe in the future it’ll happen! CM: Favorite philosophy? Johnny: “Do something today your future self will thank you for.” I’m a huge proponent of steady and incremental self-betterment. Visit johnnykasun.com to enjoy Johnny’s music and learn more.

Whether you live at the beach or only indulge in day trips, chances are you’ve eaten in one of Marilyn Schlossbach’s restaurants. Most in our area know the Executive Chef, Owner, and CEO of The Marilyn Schlossbach Group from her legendary status in the local dining scene, but her commitment to our community is something that often goes quietly unnoticed. Something bigger even than her businesses, a constant for Marilyn, with every fiber of her being, is that she is a true humanitarian. Her passion for community and giving back goes beyond her success with culinary endeavors. Marilyn is a lover of the ingredients that nourish the soul.
Along the Asbury Park Boardwalk Marilyn’s restaurants and bars include Langosta Lounge, serving unique, locally sourced coastal cuisine, Pop’s Garage, serving casual and sustainable Mexican foods, and the Asbury Park Yacht Club, a beach bar and art gallery. In Long Branch, she owns The Whitechapel Projects (WCP), a restaurant and brewery. Just a few blocks from the beach, the industrial style building is artistically decorated with a brick-walled courtyard, an old elevator shaft as an entrance foyer, and plenty of outside seating for summer dining out back. Creative food options are farmto-table and include a variety of dishes with delectable mushrooms from WCP’s onsite gourmet mushroom garden. In Normandy Beach, Marilyn owns the iconic Labrador Lounge and Tini’s Fish House, serving up Jersey Shore favorites. There is Marilyn Schlossbach Catering for beach weddings and corporate events, and Wave of Balance, Marilyn’s wellness supplement company. Stepping into any of Marilyn’s establishments is an artistic experience. The enticing aroma of delicious foods fill your senses. Your eyes take in the décor, the walls are lined with unique original artwork. Nearly all of Marilyn’s venues host live musicians from the local communities. And if you’re a lover of chocolate, her latest business venture, Vintage Plantations, launched in 2020, is a boat-to-bean-tobar, small batch chocolate company in Normandy Beach. A joint venture between chocolatier Pierrick Chouard and Marilyn, Vintage Plantations evolved from a chance meeting with Chouard on a ferry ride, and Marilyn’s love for chocolate. “Marilyn Schlossbach is a shining example of what a philanthropist should be,” said Jeremy Grunin, President of The Grunin Foundation, when asked about their interactions. “She gives back generously of not only her treasure, but something even more valuable - her time.” Marilyn’s community work includes founding the not-for-profit Food for Thought by the Sea, which fosters healthy relationships and learning opportunities through culinary and environmental studies. Since 2008, she’s offered free holiday meals to any and all in need on Thanksgiving and other holidays. She works in collaboration with Interfaith
Neighbors on Asbury Park’s Kula Café and Urban Farm, which offers culinary training and potential job opportunities to local youth; community gardening and surf lessons with the Boys and Girls Club of Asbury Park; board membership with the College Achieve Greater Asbury Park Charter School. Marilyn is committed to unwavering support of environmental organizations such as Clean Ocean Action, Surfrider Foundation, American Littoral Society, and Waves for Water, an organization that helps to bring clean water to villages throughout Nicaragua, and also helps to protect coastlines and marine environments. Marilyn’s latest community project is not-for-profit Food For Thought By The Sea’s food truck. Marilyn has partnered with Fulfill on this project, and has a couple major sponsors for the truck, including New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG). “Working with NJNG in the community for nearly three decades, I have met a lot of people who are doing great things in the community and Marilyn is one of those special people that gives back, while also running her own businesses,” said Tom Hayes, Director of Customer and Community Relations for NJNG. “I have had the pleasure of working with Marilyn on different projects over the years, but when I was approached to see if NJNG
would help with the Food for Thought food truck, that would train local youth and those in need of solid employment, while also helping local nonprofits raise money, I knew this was going to be a great fit for NJNG.” With all those businesses on her plate, and her deep commitments to the community’s needs, the omnipresent Marilyn manages to prioritize a work life balance, enjoying time with her 9-year-old twin daughters, Hari Mar and Rubi Dee, and her artist husband, Scott Szegeski. Meet your neighbor, Marilyn Schlossbach.
Where did you grow up? Marilyn: I grew up in Belmar, and I
attended the Ranney School until I was of high school age and then I begged my parents to let me go to the public school. I wanted to go to school with the kids I knew locally. So, I began attending Asbury Park High School, and when I entered, I was academically ahead and attended Brookdale at the same time. I was the youngest of three children. I have two older brothers, with a long age gap between us. My parents had me when they were older. I was the surprise baby! I have always loved the ocean and I grew up here at the Jersey Shore and I have a true love and appreciation for it.

Did you know growing up that you wanted to be a restaurateur? Marilyn: Hell no! My goal in life was to
become Jacques Cousteau’s assistant. I grew up with the ocean as my best friend. I loved surfing… I applied to the University of Miami and got into the marine biology program. At the same time there was a mix-up with my transcripts from graduating high school, and that held up my attending Miami. That was finally worked out, but it was too late-my mother became ill, then my father died, and my mother became worse. I needed to help take care of her. I attended FIT and New School in NYC.
What was the pivotal moment for you that inspired you to be a chef? Marilyn: I was an 18-year-old kid
What is the number one challenge your industry is facing today? Marilyn: That’s an easy one. As we are
rising out of the pandemic, it is harder to find employees. There are not enough people applying for the restaurant jobs. I would encourage parents to encourage

working in my older brother’s French Japanese restaurant in Avon named Oshin. We had so much fun. We dressed in Japanese Kabuki attire and theatre makeup and promoted the restaurant by walking on the beaches in full costume. In my free time I would go to the beach, surf, and go to clubs to dance all night. It was a lot of fun! But when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in my early 20s, the fun came to an abrupt halt. After suffering chemo treatments, she went on a macrobiotic diet, and I witnessed her turning her health completely around. She went into 100% remission because of food. It was during those days, as I watched how food enhanced her health, that I would discover my passion for the culinary arts, healthy ingredients and natural supplements. I saw an amazing transformation of healing the body, between food and perseverance. This was very intriguing to me, and it really opened my eyes to how the mind and body are connected. My father died after her remission, and she lost her will to live. I lost both my parents very young. I was only 20 or so. It was around that same time when one evening at Oshin, we were expecting a large crowd at the restaurant and our chef walked out on us. We were totally screwed. I called my brother to explain the situation and he said, “Well you are going to have to cook then…” I was really

nervous, but my brother helped me over the phone walking me through step-bystep on how to cook…and I LOVED it. I remember the moment he was coaching me and I was cooking the tuna, and I flipped it on the grill and got the temperature right. I was hooked, that was it. From that moment I never stopped learning about foods and how to prepare them - I am a self-taught chef.
their teens to get a summer restaurant job, your teen will learn so much on the job that they can take with them the rest of their lives. They will learn skills in the restaurant business that they will take with them. Even just the socialization is important today.
What was the first restaurant you opened? Marilyn: It was the early 90s, we were
driving to Seaside to go to a surf shop, and I saw a sign in Bayhead that said, “For Rent”. It looked like a little cottage, a French Chateau. It had been a restaurant. The landlord gave it to me for a couple thousand dollars for the entire summer… I put out a call to my friends for help and we all worked on painting and prepping it…
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com
It was a very tiny restaurant and I named it Rosalie’s Kitchen, after a woman who I knew and admired, who was a former boyfriend’s housekeeper. She inspired me with healthy ingredients she would use in her food preparation, and she had such a warm personality. I never felt like I fit in with the boyfriend’s family, but I bonded with Rosalie. My wish was that someday she would come visit the restaurant and she did. She was in her 90s wearing a Rosalie’s Kitchen shirt…it was really special. The prior chef built all these edible gardens around the restaurant, so I walked into an edible cornucopia. There were only a few tables, we were only open in the summer, all the workers were my friends, and it was a really great time. I made up the menu depending on the ingredients I could get from the organic truck, and we had a great following, great reviews… Shortly after, I met a guy and we became a couple, we opened up another restaurant together, and it was disastrous. He was abusive and controlling and destructive, and I ended up losing everything, both restaurants were lost, and I walked away from the restaurant business, and took a job in the surf shop industry.
How did you meet your husband Scott? Marilyn: My husband Scott Szegeski
is an artist known for his gyotaku art and surf-inspired interpretations of Japanese printing. Although he grew up in a family that was in the restaurant business, he’s not a restaurant worker. He’s truly an artist, that is what he does full time. However, we met when Scott was a dishwasher at a place in Mantoloking, called Used to Be’s, because it used to be a lot of other places. The owner there had offered me a free kitchen. He said to a friend of mine, ‘She’s too talented to not be working in a kitchen, tell her I want her to come and work here.’ I began working as a chef and we got a great review from the press and it took off. Then a new owner bought the building, and it was time for a change. Scott had an internship for Surfer Magazine in California and I was the Snow Board Representative, and we began meeting at the industry trade shows and eventually dating.
When did you get married? Marilyn: It was in 2006, and we couldn’t
afford a wedding and really did not have any time to plan one. It was the grand opening of our first restaurant together, called Market in the Middle, and we told all our workers to show up looking a little more dressed because they were going to be working a wedding, but we did not say whose wedding it was. It was a really great time!
You have beautiful nine-year-old twin daughters, how did they change you? Marilyn: I love being their mom. The more
you live the more you want simplicity in life because that’s what matters. Having kids has made me stay more committed to having the right people around me. It has made me make better decisions about where to spend money. I have always cared about having the right employees but even more importantly now, I look for employees with good values because my kids are in my businesses all the time and I want them to be surrounded by positive, good people. Having a balanced healthy life is even more important. I have what I call “mommy time” and that’s when I’m totally focused on my girls. I am able to disconnect from work. We are a family that really
has a great time together and separating from everything else and just enjoying being together keeps us balanced.
What do you think has influenced you to altruistically care and give the way you do? Marilyn: First of all, I think every busi-
ronment. Every customer that walks in our doors is important. When we are interviewing employees, we ask questions like, ‘What motivates you?’ and ‘What volunteer or charity work have you been involved with or would like to become involved with?’ We really look for good people. Kindness matters.
ness can do well by contributing to the community they are in and giving back. There are moments in my life that did change my personal outlook, specifically, on a cellular level, I was changed when my mother had a nervous breakdown when I was 9 years old. The carefree life was over. That changed how I looked at everything. I loved the ocean, and it was my escape. I would skateboard to the beach myself and would swim and surf and it was my place to get away. When both of my parents died, that was another significant difficult time.

BEYOND THE BRAND
Green Leaf Pet Resort By Cathy Padilla
Green Leaf Pet Resort, circa 2011, is a product of more than 50 years of canine-wellness and training experience from its founder, Shelly Leibowitz. Covering all things canine, from training to boarding, daycare to swimming, parties to boutiques, it’s one of the largest and most comprehensive pet facilities in Monmouth County. We caught up with Meghan Flynn, Green Leaf’s Marketing and Events Manager, to go beyond the brand. CM: Why is your company so passionate about pets? Meghan: It’s a reward within itself to look at the lives of all of the dogs and families we’ve been fortunate enough to help. Yet even with all of our years in the industry, there are still no words that can accurately describe the bond between people and dogs. It’s just pure love. CM: What sets you apart from other pet facilities? Meghan: Simply put, it’s the experience we are founded on. Shelly Leibowitz, our owner, is a world-renowned trainer and expert behaviorist, whose revolutionary approach of “control through kindness” has brought him recognition and accolades throughout his four decades in the field. Shelly’s skills have led him to train dogs for security, as well as drug and bomb detection, working with police departments in the country to develop and expand their K-9 units. He also works with courts, collaborating with lawyers and judges to help rescue and rehabilitate highly

troublesome canines. He is the founder and president of the Garden State Schutzhund Club - a competitive canine sport developed in Germany - and was chosen in 2007 to represent the US in the Schutzhund World Team. Green Leaf Pet Resort is purposefully built from the ground up with dogs in mind utilizing Shelly’s expertise at every step. From the planning stages to daily execution, our facility has grown organically to accommodate the needs of every type of dog. It is through that knowledge and that passion that Green Leaf provides the highest quality and most technically advanced physical conditioning, recreation, and exercise programs available. Each facility includes a state-of-the-art antimicrobial cleaning and hospital-grade air filtration system throughout our green and energy-efficient facility.
CM: What is the most rewarding part of your career, personally? Meghan: Besides finding a way to wake up and work with dogs for a living, it has to be working with the pet owners. It’s educating them and opening up their lives to a stronger, better bond with their pets. Our training goes far beyond things like sit, stay, and fetch - it’s about reading the dog and understanding what it’s saying. Our reward is getting that conversation started between owners and their dogs so they can take on anything together. We love to hear about families where training has prevented them from having to rehome their pets; or fami-

lies who can open their life up to vacations knowing their dogs are cared for.
CM: What comes next for Green Leaf? Meghan: We’re always looking for ways to improve the quality of care we give our canine guests. We’re more than excited to announce that we’ll be having VCA Shrewsbury Animal Hospital open up within our Oakhurst location this summer! CM: What is the most challenging part of the business? Meghan: The most challenging part of what we do is also the most rewarding. All of our training and behavioral work is custom tailored for each dog - as well as each client! It can take time and patience for a client to pick-up training, so we offer unlimited classes for each owner and pup. CM: What is your best business tip to share? Meghan: Make decisions with what is important in mind. For us, it’s the dogs. Every choice we make revolves around one simple question: “Does this help the dogs?” It makes sure that every decision has a simple, yet meaningful, answer. CM: Is there a company favorite quote or mantra? Meghan: “This isn’t a 9-5,” our owner Shelly Leibowitz always says. “It’s not just a job. This is a way of life. Otherwise, you’ll never be good at it.”

County health department leaders were honored with the “Unsung Hero” award at Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s recent gala: Dr. Mukesh Roy, Jeryl Krautle and Dan Regenye.(Photo: John Vitollo)
Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore raised more than $155,000 to provide leadership programs for girls in need at its annual Women of Distinction & Community Partners Gala recently at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club. More than 200 supporters attended the charitable event, celebrating nine community leaders and generating funds to ensure that area girls have the opportunity to learn and grow in Girl Scout programs, regardless of ability to pay. “Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is beyond grateful for the community’s generous support and enthusiastic response to this year’s gala,” said Eileen Higgins, chief executive officer of the nonprofit, which serves approximately 9,000 girls in Monmouth and Ocean counties. “We are thank-

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe at the Jersey Shore Your summer plans undoubtedly include a trip to the Jersey Shore with your furry friend. But, before you head out, protect your pet from summer hazards by following these three tips.
#1: Know the signs of overheating and heatstroke
Providing ample outdoor time is a summer luxury to our furry friends, but every pet has their limits, especially on a hotter day. Pets can become dehydrated, therefore be sure to provide free access to water throughout the day, take breaks in the shade, and avoid over exercise. If a pet over does it and becomes overheated, they may start to exhibit signs of: Excessive panting or difficulty breathing Drooling Weakness If you note any of these signs, encourage your pet to take a break from the sun in an air-conditioned building or vehicle and provide cool water. Recognizing signs at this stage is critical to prevent progression to life-threatening heatstroke. Heatstroke signs include: Incoordination Vomiting Diarrhea, which may be bloody or black Collapse If you think your pet is suffering from heatstroke, take them to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately. It is important to remember our pets that have flat faces, are overweight, or have heart and lung disease should be kept in air-conditioned or cooled areas, as they are more prone to overheating and severe heatstroke.
#2: Protect their Feet!
Asphalt temperature can creep up quickly on a hot day. When you are ready to take your pet on a walk, be sure to check the temperature of the ground with the “7 second test”. Simply place your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds- if it is too hot for you - it is too hot for your pet! Walking your pet on hot asphalt, brick, or cement can lead to painful burns. Monitor your pet’s paws after a walk. If you note redness, swelling, peeling of the paw pad, or bleeding, please seek veterinary care immediately. When able, consider walking your pet through a meadow, soft surface, or grass. Otherwise, consider walking your pet in the early morning or evening, when the ground is cooler to protect their feet.
#3: Pesky Bar-B-Q Treats
With summer months, comes summer treats! Backyard BBQs are the staple for enjoying those warm summer evenings. Commonly these BBQs provide easy access to some dangerous foods for your pup.
These include: Corn cobs Alcoholic beverages Grapes/Raisins Chocolate Any food sweetened with xylitol It is important to remember the snacks enjoyed by you should not be shared with your furry friend, as even one meal of these treats could cause digestive upset. Ensuring to provide options for pet specific treats at your BBQ will help ensure your furry friend is truly invited to the party. We hope you enjoy a safe trip to the Jersey Shore with your pet, but if things go awry, and you need immediate veterinary care, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls offers round-the-clock emergency service. Do You Need A PHD? By Judith S. Parnes, LCSW, CMC Executive Director, Elder Life Management, Inc Geriatric Care Management is a profession that has blossomed as the complexities of aging and spiraling health care costs have placed demands on so many of us. But how many people actually know what a Geriatric Care Manager is, or more importantly how a Professional Care Manager can help? Possibly the simplest way to explain the role of a Geriatric Care Manager is to think of a PHD. Yes, someone who has a Doctorate, not in philosophy, but a doctorate as a Professional Hired Daughter. In times past, when growing older occurred in intimate families of origin, the local physician was available to assist the entire family unit from birth to death. It was typically the daughter who was responsible for care giving, care managing and care planning of an elder parent. This pattern continues today, with adult daughters in our culture remaining in this primary role. However, we now hear these daughters being identified as the “sandwich generation” or “women in the middle” or being “burned out”. Geriatric Care Managers provide Assessment, Short Term Solutions and Long Term Planning. Consider the story of Carole and her mother, Barbara: Carole lives 10 minutes away from her mother Barbara. They speak daily and Carole “checks–in” on her mother a few times a week. These visits have progressed from socializing to supervising to caretaking. Carole works full-time, is married with two children, one in high school, and her son in college. Carole now shops, cleans, and drives her mother to some family functions. Carole had spoken with Barbara’s doctor and neighbors and was concerned about her mother’s increasing incapacity. Barbara lived alone in her own multi-level home. Her short-term memory problems were beginning to affect her functional status. She was becoming mildly paranoid and was starting to hoard paper. She continued to drive even after multiple “fender-benders”. Once, she walked home from

the local convenience store, believing her parked car was stolen. On two occasions in the past year, emergency services were called to the house, once for a small kitchen fire, and more recently in response to Barbara falling down the front steps. Carole knew it was just a matter of time before a catastrophe would occur. However, no discussion with her mother resulted in any change in her mom’s behavior or decision making. A friend told Carole to call Elder Life Management. A Comprehensive Consultation was scheduled where Carole was able to review her mother’s situation in detail and a plan of action was developed. After only a few visits with her care manager, Barbara agreed for a care manager to accompany her to the physician appointment she so desperately needed. She also agreed to allow a home health aide to visit daily to help with personal care, food preparation and monitor self-administration of medication. Dialogue was initiated regarding Barbara’s future health care goals. As the immediate situation was defused and present care needs addressed, a long-term plan was developed. It included Barbara agreeing to move to an assisted living facility. This was a gradual process, from in-home services to out of home transition. During this time, with one emergency hospitalization, it was the care manager who ran to the Emergency Room and met Barbara. It was the care manager that spoke with the doctors to ensure quality of care, enabling Carole to complete her work day before going to the hospital. It was the care manager that was advocating within the medical community. It was actually only then that Carole truly realized that her mother needed the Professional Hired Daughter, the Geriatric Care Manager. Carole was finally able to return to “just” being the loving supportive daughter she wanted to be.
