The best beer drinking experience is had at the Source. Enjoy hand-crafted, farm-to-glass ales and lagers brewed on site. Beer can have a personality, tell a story, wow the senses, and bring people together. Introducing our New Zealand style pilsner, shown being poured above. This crisp, clean, unfiltered lager was brewed with premium German malts and several late additions of our favorite New Zealand hops that deliver a huge punch of bright citrus fruit aromas and flavors. This beer is light, highly drinkable, and full-flavored making it a classic “go-to” beer year round. We look forward to serving this beer in our taproom straight from one of our cellar’s horizontal lagering tanks.

Ah, Sextilis. That’s the original Latin name for the month of August because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar. Poet Helen Hunt Jackson called August the “poor, middle-aged summer”. And in Europe, August is traditionally the month for holiday, or as we Americans refer to it, vacation. But here in Monmouth County this month is often about the last sweet bits of sun and surf before school begins anew. With all this in mind, we at CM offer our Back to School issue. We reached out to our local private schools so they could let you know about Open Houses coming up, and we crafted articles to give you information we thought helpful as you prepare your little ones, and not-so-little-anymore offspring, for the great adventure of a new school year.

Our cover is a rather unique spin on the Back to School concept. On page 32 you’ll meet Sal Cannizzaro, a truly self-made man. He took advantage of what we would refer to as trade school at a very early age and has built upon those teachings with vision and tenacity. If you’re in favor of bringing shop class back to middle school, Sal is a great example. Without the benefit of college or connections, Sal sails a course of success. We think you’ll enjoy meeting this neighbor. As ever at CM we are committed to the local community and being involved wherever we can. Read about our proud sponsorship of the Monmouth Film Festival on page 26 and set yourself a reminder for our September issue where we’ll be giving away two-day general admission tickets to the soldout Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park. Enjoy the rest of August, and to all the kids

make it a great year!

Little Silver Charitable Foundation Awards $1,000 College Scholarship to Summer Smith The Little Silver Charitable Foundation (LSCF) recently awarded Summer Smith its $1,000 College Scholarship Grant. Each year, the foundation conducts an essay contest in which any Little Silver high school senior can participate. LSCF receives a tremendous amount of submissions each year; the essays are a 500-word testimony of what made growing up in Little Silver so special. The Foundation noted the submissions are heartfelt and wonderful to read, and it makes selecting a winner a difficult process. Summer Smith will be attending the University of Wisconsin this fall. Below is her essay, a testament to the town of Little Silver: What is special about growing up in Little Silver? “As I grow older, the more excited I become about leaving Little Silver. I can’t wait to live in a town with more than 6,000 people. I can’t wait to be able to leave my house and not run into ten people I know. I can’t wait to live somewhere where not one single person knows me. But then I realize, this is what I love about Little Silver. Going to Acme for one grocery item and ending up spending 45 minutes there because you run into at least five people you know, and sitting in Grandma’s Bagels in the morning and having your mailman deliver your mail to you at the table because he knows you. Eating lunch at Edie’s and running into old teachers from Markham and Point Road. I loved staying up until midnight on those middle school nights playing manhunt with the whole grade in someone’s neighborhood. I realize that the quaintness of Little Silver and the community of people is what I love. I think about the volunteer EMT’s who at 2:00 am rushed out of their homes to save my dad’s life; the same volunteers who inspired me to take my EMR course and join the Little Silver EMS cadets. And I remember the volunteer coaches I had in the LS rec sports I attempted to play as a kid; the same volunteers who inspired me to coach a rec basketball team for two years. These people are why I love Little Silver. As I grow more excited to leave this town of 6,000, I reminisce on the memories that only a small town would be able to provide me with. Memories only someone who was born and raised in Little Silver would understand. Like having my first “date” in “town,” or painting the window of Dr. Dowd’s office with pumpkins for Halloween or playing the trumpet every year at the tree lighting and Memorial Day services, and shopping for

12

a bridesmaid dress eighth grade graduation. Only Little Silver kids know what the sprint feels like to Giannis and Grandmas Bagels on half days, so you are the first in line. Many of these childhood memories seem foreign and strange to most people, but to Little Silverians these memories built our childhood. These memories shaped my entire life and made me into the person I am today. These are the memories I want my children to have when they grow up. The close-knit community of Little Silver instilled in me a strong sense of friendship. Little Silver’s schools, community, neighbors and memories shaped me into the strong, independent woman I am today. It’s hard for me to say goodbye to a town that has given me so much, but I know that I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for Little Silver.”

FRANCES FOUNDATION HOLDS ANNUAL PICNIC AND SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT FRANCES FOUNDATION held its thirteenth annual Softball Tournament and Picnic on July 13 at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel. The event is named in honor of Daniel R. Shalloo, Sr., a deceased Frances Foundation trustee and decorated Marine who fought in Korea. “It was an amazing day! The sunshine was brilliant and so were the thousands of smiles on the faces of the children,” said Frances Foundation founder Robert “Bob” Heugle. More than 50 volunteers helped to make the event possible, as well as the teams, players, and fans who gave their time and support. Starting off the event was warrior Mckenzy who sang the National Anthem and Sean Hanlon of the Holmdel Kiwanis, who sang God Bless America. Recognition was given for the picnic’s namesake, Daniel R. Shalloo, Sr., and Heugle thanked Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden and Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone for their long time generous support. Heugle noted that the highlight of the day was the presentation of gifts to the attending angels’ and pediatric cancer warriors’ families. During the last month, the Frances Foundation has delivered approximately $15,000 in smiles and assistance to numerous families. “Hats off to all our teams including Vonage, Rainbow Foundation, Cookies Crumblers, Team Jackson Sharkey, Maggipalooza, Access Integration Systems, the Angels, Union Beach Fire Department, Howell Police Department, Team Jake-Madi-Gwennie, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department, and Mya/ IFF.” A championship game was won by the Champions Team Mya against the Sheriff’s Department with a score of 2-1. Heugle also thanked Kick Cancer Overboard and the Dean Michael Clarizio Cancer Foundation for attending and lending their support.

College Bound Students Embrace Community Service

Left to right: LiliAnn Paras, Senator Vin Gopal, Jade Falvo Fernandes, Moriah Roof, Talula Dechev, Bryn Horner, Robert Dykeman, Kaelah Grant,Ethan Howe, and Cindy O’Brien

THE VIN GOPAL CIVIC ASSOCIATION (VGCA) awarded scholarships to fifteen students from ten Monmouth County high schools. The $500 scholarships focused primarily on participation in community service and academic achievements. Too many times the portrayals of “Generation Z” are negative; these students exemplify an awareness of the world, good citizenship, earnestness, and a commitment to continue in addressing social concerns. A compelling question on the application asked the students to describe what ‘keeps you up at night’ about the country or the world, and what changes they would like to see. The Scholarship Committee co-chairs, Cindy O’Brien and LiliAnn Paras, were struck by the deep and varied responses, noting a particular focus on global warming and the environment, gun safety, civil discourse, poverty, and criminal justice. The mood was much lighter at the celebration held at The Downtown in Red Bank! There was a lot of mingling with the eclectic group of students, their families, donors and special guests. Senator Vin Gopal formally welcomed the awardees and their families.

16

He thanked the owners of Saker ShopRite for their generous donation to VGCA in support of the scholarship program. Rick Saker was on hand to speak to the group about the importance of service. He then paused and expressed how impressed he was with the students he met that night and sincerely invited the students to contact him about internships and other career opportunities. The highlight of the evening was hearing each student share where he or she would attend college and the intended majors. The students were commended by the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly from the 11th District (signed by Senator Vin Gopal, Assemblywoman Joann L. Downey, Esp, and Assemblyman Eric T. Houghtaling) and from the 13th District (signed by Senator Declan O’ Scanlon, and Serena DiMaso and Amy H. Handlin, Members of the General Assembly.) The evening was rounded out with two returning VGCA scholarship winners candidly describing the highs and lows of the first year of college. Scholarships are not the only way the VGCA reaches out to the community. It rec-

ognizes that in our local communities there are many groups affected by our unique high cost of living. The mission of the VGCA is to “help those who are the backbone of our communities to maintain a fruitful, independent life by lending a helping hand wherever we can and by fostering a relationship with other civic and religious groups with similar goals in helping our communities.” The Scholarship Recipients and colleges: Mahi Patel, The College of NJ; Erika Tan, University of Texas – Austin; Vivian Parkin De Rosa, Smith College; Susanna Ferrier,UCLA; Nelson Lin, Brown University; Ryan Moore, University of Delaware; Scott McLaughlin, Stockton University; Jade Falvo Fernandes, Monmouth University; Moriah Roof, Monmouth University; Frank Illiano, Monmouth University; Kaelah Grant, Drexel University; Talula Dechev, University North Carolina Wiilmington; Robert DyKeman, Loyola University of Maryland; Bryn Horner, University of South Carolina; and Ethan Howe, Northeastern University. THE MAYOR’S CUP HEADS BACK TO FAIR HAVEN After the Mayor’s Cup went on a one-year hiatus to another town, it finally is back in Fair Haven. Skipper George Harrington and crew member Christopher Rodriguez successfully navigated the competitive field for the second time in three years on the Navesink River. Boats ranging from Juniors to experienced crews launched from the docks of the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club on the morning of July 6 for the annual regatta.

Fair Haven in 2012. The “bridge” race was open to all sailboats and used the Portsmouth Handicap system (a universally accepted way to normalize times/ scores of widely differing types of sailing vessels). The bridge race was comprised of various

fleets including Cruising, One Design, Optimist, and 420 classes. The race was held between the Oceanic Bridge and Lewis Point under ideal racing conditions with winds from 7 to 9 MPH and partly sunny skies. By the end of the regatta, the sun was shining on all participants and spectators alike.

The Fair Haven duo sailing the Bolt swept the honors for the One Design Fleet, the Mayor’s Cup, and the NJYRA Mallory Cup awards. Crews made up of sailors from many towns, including Fair Haven, Rumson, Atlantic Highlands, Middletown, Little Silver, Red Bank, Shrewsbury, Sea Bright, and beyond, came to compete in the Mayor’s Cup Regatta 2019. The Mayor’s Cup Regatta is held annually and brings together many from the peninsula and surrounding communities to enjoy the time-honored tradition on the Navesink. This was the eighth race for the Mayor’s Cup, which was started concurrent with the centennial celebration in

“Christmas in July” RAISED FUNDS FOR TIGGER HOUSE FOUNDATION Student Alliance Program Educates Local High Schoolers About the Disease of Addiction THE TIGGER HOUSE FOUNDATION (THF) STUDENT ALLIANCE program hosted a Fashion Show event at Garmany in Red Bank on July 12 to begin raising scholarship money for individuals who are struggling with addiction and in need of drug rehabilitation. Tigger House Foundation is inspired by the devastating suffering and profound love of a family who lost their son and brother “Tigger” at 25 years of age to an accidental overdose. Tigger grew up on the Jersey Shore where he went to school, was loved by many friends and family, and lived a very full life. After having established THF five years ago and gathering ideas on how to help this epidemic, the foundation decided to implement its pilot program, THF Student Alliance, within high schools. Introducing this program to high school students will better educate the younger generation in dealing with the many issues of addiction they face today. Law Enforcement Leader, Chief William Lucia, provides guidance to the THF Student Alliance by educating and training both students and their parents on the opioid epidemic. Chief Lucia teaches the students skill sets to use when dealing with their peer pressures and talking about the drug epidemic. The Chairman of the Student Alliance is Nick Spinelli who has many years of sobriety and is a recovery professional. He is working very closely with these students. Currently, five high schools are involved in the student alliance program with nine students. The students and their schools are: Joe Dibernardo and Daniel Mooney, Christian Brothers Academy; Jaiden Diehl and Robert Gray, Rumson-Fair Haven High School; Emily Ahearn and Olivia Peter, Red Bank Catholic; Frankie Stavola, Middletown South; Molly Clifford and Anna Ferrigine, Trinity Hall. To donate to THF Student Alliance, visit online

Fair Haven Kathleen Beausoleil to Showcase Her Art at Oceanic Library BY SUSAN M U RPHY

Fair Haven resident Kathleen Beausoleil will present an end-of-summer sale of her shore-inspired pieces, “Our Town,” at the Oceanic Library in Rumson during the month of August. The art show is a thank you to the area that has become a home for her these past fourteen years. The paintings in this show are the result of Beausoleil’s work while she was at home raising her children.

Beausoleil has worked on some of her pieces for years and others come together quickly. Her photorealist work is highly detailed and labor intensive. Alla Prima, which is direct painting or wet on wet, Beausoleil explained that is faster painting. These can be done in one session. Many of the paintings in her August show are done in this style, and some en plein air, meaning they are done outdoors. “I go down to the beach with my easel and paint. You have to work fast to capture the moving light. This exercise is part of my normal practice,” she said.

As a young child, she was always coloring, which kept her entertained for hours. “I always took art lessons but I don’t think I knew it was going to be how I would make a living until high school. I remember one assignment was to draw something from life and I drew my father’s work gloves. I knew during that drawing that art was my vocation,” she said.

What motivates Beausoleil as an artist? “I love studying color and light. I communicate best through visual language. I try to represent the world as authentically and honestly as I see it. I hope you’ll come and let me know your thoughts.”

Beausoleil believes all homes should have original artwork, as it adds warmth and character to a home. “Art is a very emotional thing, and it has its own language. There is so much intricacy that goes into every painting, because really every work is just a form of social commentary or observation of the world around you. It’s deep and complex and interesting, because it’s made by humans for humans. For me as a creator, being able to paint helps me make sense of the things I don’t understand any other way and comment on the world as I see it.” People-watching is one of the things Beausoleil loves to do and a good deal of her work reflects this. Beausoleil also captures “regular moments” of her life. “There’s so much beauty in the simple moments, and I love that I get to share snapshots of my life and the stories that I see. In one of my paintings, ‘Cotton Candy,’ I focused on a mother and her children at the fair. I edited out everyone else, to highlight that sort of relationship and dynamic. That’s the beauty of this area we create opportunities like this for our kids to keep in their memories. I see my paintings like a photo album of moments like these, that hopefully everyone can see glimpses of themselves in.” Painting is hard work but Beausoleil loves it. She loves the texture and smell of it and being able to push it around with brushes and knives. She loves the challenge of capturing light on objects. She admits it’s not easy; that it takes practice and lots of bad paintings. There are also moments of pure ecstasy when she is able to capture it all with ease. “It’s those moments that keep me going. The calm comes from the process and the practice - the constant learning.”

Building the Trinity Hall Community

Trinity Hall, an independent, all-girls college preparatory school, will begin its seventh school year this fall. The school opened in Fall 2013 with 30 ninth-grade students, and will welcome 300 students in grades nine through 12 for the 2019-2020 school year. With a 20,000 square foot building addition, completed in early 2019, the Trinity Hall campus accommodates its growing student body while maintaining small class sizes and an all-honors curriculum. Trinity Hall’s Class of 2019, with 22 graduates total, was its smallest class to date. “Although small in number, they proved to be very mighty this year,” said Christina Bergamo, director of college counseling. “These 22 impressive young women were accepted into 74 different colleges and universities that span our country and were awarded over $4.6 million in merit-based academic scholarships. We are incredibly proud of all this senior class has accomplished during their four years with us and are eager to see the positive impact they will make on their college campuses all across the country.” Trinity Hall’s Class of 2020 reflects the school’s steady growth, with 65 students scheduled to earn their diplomas next spring. The Monarchs athletics teams look to continue their strong performance this year after winning the 2018-2019 ShopRite Cup, awarded by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) to the highest performing school in each division based on points accrued for state tournament performance and season-long sportsmanship. Trinity Hall is a member of NJSIAA, the Shore Conference and the New Jersey Independent School Athletic Association (NJISAA), and competes against public, parochial and independent schools in Monmouth County and throughout the state at the junior varsity and varsity levels. For students interested in the performing arts, the school produces two staged performances each year, with a drama in the fall and a musical in the spring. “Not only do students perform onstage and in the orchestra pit, but they support each production behind the scenes,” said Ellen Phillips, theatre teacher and director. “Our students are directing, choreographing, designing and creating costumes, building sets and props, managing the house and all the technical aspects of the productions.” For more information, visit trinityhallnj.org.

Have You Considered Sedation Dentistry for You or Your Child? Our 9-year-old needed two baby root canals and 7 cavities filled. After trying a couple of appointments with our regular pediatric dentist, our son became anxious and aggravated. Our pediatric dentist recommended we put him under general anesthesia and have everything done at one time. Of course I tried to learn as much as I could about putting a 9-year-old under general anesthesia, thus beginning my journey into sedation dentistry. Turns out, Dr Lichtenstein is THE GO-TO dentist for general anesthesia because of his many years of hospital operating experience. General anesthesia is serious for anyone and needs to be done by someone with great skill, great experience and regular practice. After researching ALL the options for our son, it was a no-brainer to go to Dr Lichtenstein. We were totally lucky to have a Dentist Anesthesiologist in our state, much less the same county. There are only a handful of these specially trained doctors in the Northeast. Not all have the 13+ years of hospital OR experience Dr Lichtenstein has.

We knew our little guy was in the best possible hands. We talked to many practices who spoke highly of Dr Lichtenstein and his ability to do excellent dental work as well as sedate our son safely using his hospital-grade “operating room”. Breathing, temperature, pulse, all these need to be monitored! This type of monitoring is not done in a regular dental office. Ask, ask, ask! Our son did great, and when Dr Lichtenstein (himself) called that night to check on us, our son was out playing soccer. Wonderful experience. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about dentistry and sedation during investigating options for our son. As a parent, I needed to feel confident and choose the absolute BEST route for my son. There’s some pretty scary stuff out there, and I always tell everyone I know about Dr Lichtenstein and his background and training which make ALL THE DIFFERENCE. All the best, L. he expression “self-made man” has been around for many years. The term was born to popular culture on February 2, 1832 on the floor of the United States Senate when Henry Clay used it to describe individuals whose success came from within, owing little or nothing to birth, relationships, inherited wealth, or access to the best schooling. After meeting Salvatore Cannizzaro, his story may be the one you think of first when the notion of self-made is again heard. But it’s a story of a man who was not entirely without assistance. His help came from the ocean, his love for boats, and a deep desire to achieve.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

A first-generation youngest son, born to immigrant parents from Sicily, Sal lost his dad when he was only three-years-old. His mother raised him and his younger brother on her own in New York, and Sal speaks of the challenges his family faced as having been “underprivileged”. Because times were difficult, Sal learned early that money and work were a priority. In middle school he joined a program allowing him to learn the trade of printing. While other kids were out playing ball, Sal was finding ways to make things happen. One of the ways Sal discovered to make things happen came from an old fishing pole. Having found it while riding his bike, Sal used the encountered treasure to fish for dinner, taking his prizes from the sea home to his mother. But the young boy would take so much more from his afternoons watching the boats glide under the Verrazzano Bridge. A deep desire, a dream, a goal formed that would lead to uncommon success. “I used to sit there fishing as a kid, watching all the beautiful boats,” shared Sal. “I promised myself one day I would have a luxury boat and sail under the Verrazzano too. The day I achieved my vision was amazing. I took our first boat, the Lady Diana named for my daughter, and I made my dream come true.” Today, Sal and his wife of 38-years, Debbie, live in a home in Rumson on the banks of the Navesink. His private dock leads to their latest boat, The Blue Moon, and a lifetime of dreams fulfilled. Sal is the founder of both Immediate Care Medical Walk-In Centers and SFC Enterprises, Inc., a real estate development company. But his path as an entrepreneur started much earlier. At the age of 24, after having worked for several printing companies, Sal started his own print shop. At first printing whatever was needed, be it fliers or invitations, he

soon discovered an unmet need in the market. Generic drug makers, known as private labels, were looking for companies to print their packaging. Most other operations didn’t want to take on these smaller jobs, but Sal willingly did and became the go-to label and packaging manufacturer. His company, Innovative Folding Carton Co., which is still operating today as Multi Packaging Solutions (MPS), sustained much growth and several relocations. When Innovative purchased a building in South Plainfield, Sal managed the complete renovation and subsequent 35,000 square foot expansion of the building, ultimately creating a showcase 100,000 square foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. The company grew to be a profitable, highly-respected manufacturer that employed 270 people. In 1998, Sal sold the company to a venture capital firm and set off on a new adventure. Knowing he has a knack for all things design-related, and not wanting to be retired at too young of an age, Sal started SFC Enterprises believing he could continue to develop real estate successfully. Today he runs the business with his son, Frank. “My next goal is to take my vision, along with my son, Frank, and continue to watch it flourish,” said Sal. “We can bring it to reality together, so I can then spend more time helping others in the community, traveling with my wife, fishing, and boating.” Sal saw another need in the marketplace and set out to make something new happen yet again. Having the ability to build commercial and medical offices, in 2012 Sal took the urgent care concept and combined it with primary care in the same location. Now he has a group of nine urgent care centers throughout New Jersey.

Meet Your Neighbor Name: Salvatore F. Cannizzaro, is married to Debbie. They have two grown children: Frank and Diana. Frank is the Vice President of Construction for SFC Enterprises, Inc. Diana is a Team Sports Reporter at Philadelphia Soul. Nicknames: Sal or Mr. C. Monmouth County Connection: Lived in Holmdel for 17 years, currently lives in Rumson on the Navesink River. Owns Immediate Care Medical Walk-In Centers and SFC Enterprises, Inc. Best life tip to share: “Be humble, listen, always stay positive, and don’t take no for an answer.” Favorite Quote: “Make it Happen.” Three words he feels best describe him: “Charismatic, passionate, visionary.” Most influential person in his life: “My wife is my anchor and keeps me in perspective.”

CONTINUED >

“We are unique in the fact that we can design and build the medical space for these practices and are able to get to market quicker and more economically,” said Sal. “On a more personal level, I believe what sets me apart from others is the ability to bring an approach filled with innovative ideas, passion, and charisma to work

every day not only for myself, but for my employees, helping to create a unique family environment in the workplace.” Immediate Care Medical Walk-In Centers have been fulfilling another dream of Sal’s for the past five years by giving back to kids in the local community. (See below). When asked what project he’ll tack-

le next, Sal is quick to reply that he looks forward to more time with Debbie on his boat, since he’s been promising her for years that he’ll retire. However, he’s also quick to mention some ideas he has to help children and the elderly. It will be interesting to see what Sal makes happen next.

Taking Kids Along for the Ride Sal Cannizzaro, CEO of Immediate Care Medical Walk-In of New Jersey, will be hosting the 5th Annual Kids Fishing Trip on Monday, August 19 out of Atlantic Highlands on the Mi-Jo. Sponsored by Immediate Care, in support of community organizations including Father Time, the RAINE Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties and The Frances Foundation, about 60 children and adults will get to enjoy a fun day of fishing on the 75-foot charter boat.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

“This is one of my favorite days of the year,” said Sal, who is passionate about giving back to the community. “I’m grateful for all of our partners and sponsors that make this event possible and help it to grow year after year.” In addition to enjoying a fun day of fishing on the boat, the kids who catch the biggest fish will receive first, second, and thirdplace prizes donated by Mangia Brick Oven Pizza of Shrewsbury.

Holy Cross School Reopens as Holy Cross Academy

THE PARISH, ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY AND STUDENTS

of Holy Cross look forward to a new chapter in the history of the Catholic school in Rumson with a renewed sense of purpose and determination, as it reopens this year as Holy Cross Academy. Its three main goals are to fully engage students in the love and practice the Catholic faith; to provide the most current, innovative, and challenging curriculum in all subject areas; and to be financially sound well into the future. First and foremost, the primary purpose of Holy Cross Academy is to pass on the Catholic faith to the next generation through daily prayer, sacraments, scripture, and service to others. In addition to sacramental preparation, students gain solid values, a rich prayer life, and the support of a loving community. A new virtue-based Catholic approach to discipline and conflict-resolution will further support students’ spiritual growth. Academically, Holy Cross Academy intends to meet and exceed the ever-changing demands of modern education. An entirely new Math curriculum is now in place for Grades K-8, and the Project Lead the Way S.T.E.M. curriculum is now in place in Grades 2-5, in addition to the Next Generation Science Standards already in place in Grades 6-8. As a Project Lead the Way school, in addition to daily Science classes and weekly Technology classes, students will also have weekly S.T.E.M. classes. Financially, the Holy Cross Rumson Education Foundation has been established to support the current and future needs of Catholic education in Rumson. Principal Dr. Mark DeMareo explains its importance: “It is so important for students to love learning in a caring and supportive environment. This is what differentiates Holy Cross Academy from other schools. Our families seek to give their children advantages; the Catholic school advantage is one that will last a lifetime.”

have an impact to the local water way all the way to the ocean. Back to school offers a wonderful time to learn more. COA has a collection of education programs and activities that teach that each person is connected to, and responsible for, the health of the waterways within his or her area. These programs are offered to schools and student groups to teach young people about their watershed and their responsibility. Many of the following activities are usually combined with a slide presentation about water quality issues, unless otherwise noted. Try these unique and interactive programs developed by and available from COA to green your school scene:  Know Your Water Address is a computer-based mapping exercise using geographic information system (GIS) tools to determine what waterways surround a student’s home, school, or other dwellings so that he or she can see the path that water takes to the ocean. With the knowledge of his or her water address, a student can get a big picture view of how much a part of the watershed each person is, how humans impact those waterways, and what he or she can do to improve water quality

(ages 10-adult).  Soak It Up! is a simple but effective activity to show how common surfaces in our environment contribute to water pollution and how simple changes can improve water quality (ages 4-adult).  An EnviroScape lesson brings to life the movement of pollutants through the watershed and one’s community (ages 5-adult).  Be the Sea Change is an interactive story telling presentation of Joel Harper’s book Sea Change, combined with an introduction to COA’s long history of ocean protection and advocacy, as well as Beach Sweeps data analysis and promotion (ages 4-10).  All the Way to the Ocean is a slide & video presentation based on the book by Joel Harper combined with an introduction to COA’s long history of ocean protection and advocacy, and Beach Sweeps data analysis and promotion (ages 4-10).  Lessons and activities: Visit COA’s website, click “Education Programs” and “Resources” for links to environmental and marine lessons and education ideas (all ages).  Take action and responsibility: Start an environmental action club that meets monthly and chooses three actions to work on throughout the school year, such as: assigning student energy monitors to reduce energy waste and consumption at school; designating recycling monitors to encourage recycling and reusing items in school; eliminating single-use plastics in the cafeteria, during snack time, and at classroom parties; eliminating foam plastic trays from the cafeteria; promoting reusable beverage bottle use and discouraging use of water and beverage bottles; planting a garden; and organizing monthly cleanups on school property and throughout the local community. Be green for big blue! Treat your ocean like your life depends on it…because it does! Counseling Corner Preparing Your Child for Test or School Performance Anxiety Carianne D’Oriano, LPC

or many students, going back to school can be a stressful time. New classes, a new school, making new friends, and the unknown can increase levels of stress and anxiety. When you add test anxiety or performance anxiety into the mix it creates an environment that is uncomfortable. This can lead to school refusal, isolation, and a decrease in grades and other behavioral changes. For some students, a little nervousness before a test or presentation is helpful and prepares them to succeed. For others it can be crippling and de-stabilizing. If you feel like your child is suffering from performance anxiety when it comes to school, you are not alone. Some students feel the pressure to be perfect and this pressure causes them

to break down and shut down, making it difficult to take a test or finish an assignment. Other students may procrastinate because it is too nerve wracking for them to start the assignment, increasing anxiety levels as the due date approaches. Other students may have performed poorly in the past and they believe that they will never succeed. Symptoms of test anxiety are more severe than feeling nervous about taking a test or completing a big presentation. They include cognitive, emotional, and physical reactions. This includes: racing negative thoughts, comparison to others, difficulty concentrating, blanking out, fear, helplessness, shame, nausea, racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, tense muscles, and symptoms of a panic attack.

Some tips that may be helpful for your child to decrease symptoms of test or performance anxiety include: 1. Be prepared! Make sure your child is studying and preparing for tests or projects ahead of time and not cramming information in last minute. 2. Ask for help. Encourage your child to ask teachers and school counselors for help with subjects that he or she has the most difficulty with or anxiety about. 3. Practice relaxation techniques, including taking deep breaths and repeating positive thoughts. 4. Incorporate self-care into your child’s daily routine. This includes getting enough sleep, regularly exercising, and eating healthy. 5. Stay focused on the exam or presentation and practice good test-taking skills. The more focused your child is on the exam, the better the result. Remind your child to read the directions slowly and double check the answers.

If you feel like your child is experiencing test or performance anxiety it is important to reach out to professionals for help. Our licensed therapists can provide the tools and coping strategies to help to decrease their anxiety around taking tests and any other anxiety provoking scenarios. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!

DI VORCE TA LK

BY PET ER C . PA R A S , ESQ.

Back to School – Now What? Next month the children will return to school after a long, hot summer. Camps, vacations, and just having the children home all the time is enough for any parent to worry about. Having the children around all day, all summer, no matter their age, is time consuming and requires your full attention. But what happens when they go back to school? You have more time to focus on the state of your marriage. Is it worth saving? Does she want to save it? Does he want to save it? What do we have to do to save it? Or, conversely, if you conclude that divorce is inevitable, what do I do now? What am I facing? Will I survive? Will the children survive? Most family lawyers will tell you that they see an increase in new clients within a month or so after Labor Day for just this reason. The children are back to school and the adults have more time to focus on their very real personal concerns. So, what should you do if the state of your marriage has you preoccupied or even causes you to lose sleep at night?

The threshold decision to be made is whether you think the marriage is worth saving and whether your spouse agrees. If so, counseling is required because a relationship that reaches this point will require professional help if it is to have a chance of being salvaged. And, of course, this requires the unqualified commitment of both spouses to do the hard work that counseling requires. Without it, any attempt to reconcile is doomed to fail. And if you conclude that your marriage isn’t worth saving or can’t be saved, what do you do? First, don’t panic. You may need to consider individual counseling to help you get through the emotional rough spots or to navigate the bumpy stressful road ahead. Second, try to put aside emotion (easy to say, hard to do) to realistically consider life (the children’s, your spouse’s and yours) after divorce. Which parent should the children primarily live with? Think about what makes sense for them, not about an emotional need to win or to get revenge. How much support is needed? How much can be afforded?

Every need and desire can’t always be met. Two people have to live – in separate households – after the divorce. That adds expenses with generally no increase in income These are just a few examples of the plethora of issues that intersect divorce. Divorce affects every family member and every family member’s needs must be considered when trying to reach a resolution. You’ll need the guidance of an experienced family lawyer to help you answer these questions, to make sure you haven’t forgotten important issues, and to set reasonable expectations for you. Thinking about a broken relationship and the possibility of ending a marriage is daunting. It isn’t pleasant, but ignoring it doesn’t change the fact that you are unhappy. So once the children go back to school and you have time to think – THINK! And then engage professionals to help you down the path you choose. Life is too short to live in a broken marriage. You can either work to fix it or work to end it, but ignoring it doesn’t work at all.

Beacon Hill Raises Money to Help Veteran Beacon Hill Country Club members honored the nation on June 26 by hosting a charity golf tournament and Veterans Appreciation Day. The event raised $25,000 that the members donated to the Association of the US Army (AUSA) Monmouth Chapter, with the money going toward training a service dog for a veteran in need. Beyond fundraising, the event was an awareness effort to benefit veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The veterans, from the Monmouth University Student Veterans Association, were guests of Beacon Hill and joined the Wednesday Men’s Hat Group to play golf, increase awareness of the plight of veterans upon returning home from war, and raise money to help a veteran from Monmouth County. Eighty golfers and 15 Vets, including Alex Rodriguez and his service dog (a veteran who completed five combat tours, three in Iraq and two in Afghanistan) were present.

County launches latest Grown in Monmouth Directory Equine Directory is now available online The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently launched the Grown in Monmouth Equine Directory. The Directory will help residents and visitors find horse farms in the County that offer riding lessons, equine therapy, horse boarding and more. “It’s summer in Monmouth County and the Board of Chosen Freeholders encourages residents and visitors to take advantage of all that the County has to offer,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Division of Economic Development. “People of all ages can enjoy an array of fun equine activities while supporting local, County businesses.” The Grown in Monmouth Equine Directory is an interactive map that enables users to pinpoint the exact location as well as contact information for a variety of horse farms throughout the County. “I am delighted that the Grown in Monmouth program has published a directory that encompasses both equine activities and services,” said Freehold Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Board of Agriculture. “As a long-time supporter of the agricultural industry and equine community, I understand the tremendous impact that these businesses have on the County’s economy.” “On September 21, 2019 - the Open Space Pace starts with a parade of horses down Main Street in Freehold Borough culminating at the Freehold track,” said Freeholder Burry. “This is where we celebrate the marriage between open space and the horse which is uniquely Monmouth County.” Grown in Monmouth is a program by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders designed to help retain and grow the County’s agricultural industry. Monmouth County Historical Association By Susan Murphy

Celebrates Anniversary

Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) held its 44th annual Garden Party on June 30 at Mostly Oaks in Rumson. Nearly 400 people attended the event including Senator Joseph Kyrillos, and Freeholder Lillian Burry. All guests were welcomed to Mostly Oaks by its current owners Trustee Kara Short and her husband Charlie. Information received from MCHA notes that Mostly Oaks was built in the late 1870’s by John Lawrence Riker and his wife Mary Jackson Riker. It was one of several ocean-front summer retreats built for their nine children, many of whose descendants still live in the Rumson area today. MCHA further shared that Mostly Oaks is intrisically tied to the family of this year’s Garden Party honoree, Charles H. “Chuck” Jones III, who is the great-great grandson of John Lawrence Riker and Mary Anne Jackson Riker. His great grandparents, J. Amory Haskell and Margaret Moore Riker Haskell, a trustee and major benefactress of MCHA, lived at Mostly Oaks every summer from 1891 until 1903. Chuck is a nephew or cousin in

with Garden Party

some way, shape or form to every inhabitant of Mostly Oaks between 1903 to 1988, and is a great friend of the home’s current owners, gracious Garden Party hosts Charlie and Kara Short. Honoree Charles “Chuck” Jones became a trustee in 2013 and during his tenure, spearheaded a number of innovative initiatives. As Chair of the Education Committee, Dr. Jones was integral in the conception and execution of the popular Fourth of July Celebration at the Allen House Tavern Museum in Shrewsbury. He also oversaw a comprehensive assessment and innovation of the MCHA Volunteer program designed to optimize the experience of the docents and numerous additional supporters vital to the Association, streamlined and energized the recruitment process. Dr. Jones also piloted an in-depth evaluation of each of the MCHA historic properties, delivering a detailed assessment of the historical significance, value to the community, attendance trends, necessary improvements and overall cost projections. In 2017, Dr. Jones stepped away from his trusteeship to assume the duties of Interim Director of the MCHA.

Monmouth Museum’s Summertime Exhibition Showcases Woodstock

The Monmouth Museum’s Main Gallery summertime exhibition, Woodstock at 50: Summer of Love, journeys through the explosive era that gave life to the 1969 Woodstock Festival, the pivotal outdoor music and art fair held 50 years ago on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains. It features the renowned documentary and rock photography of the Official Woodstock Photographer, Elliott Landy. His images of Bob Dylan and The Band, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Van Morrison, and many others documented the music scene during the classic rock and roll period of 1967-1969. The exhibition also features vintage concert posters and vinyl albums, immersive video and audio experiences, 1960’s memorabilia and ephemera. Stop by and visit the exhibition during Museum hours.

1969: A Brief and Beautiful Trip Back is one girl’s account of her fantastic and unique experience of the hippie counterculture and how it changed her and those around her for the rest of their lives. From a run-of-the-mill existence in the ultra-conservative town of Fresno, California, formerly naïve teenager and rock devotee Rhiannon Karlson takes the trip of a lifetime after a drug dealer sells her particularly potent and mysterious substance, sparking her unparalleled journey of soul-searching, consciousness-expansion, and unyielding search for the Truth.

This is a novel in which HISTORY meets SCIENCE FICTION and PSYCHEDELICS meet SPIRITUALITY through a seamless blend of FACT and FANTASY

ARTIEPALOOZA DRAWS MORE THAN 400 BOATS

A DELIGHTFUL COMBINATION OF COMEDY AND ROMANCE!

WHEN ART NATSIS lost his 7-year battle to cancer in 2013, his wife, Feli Donato, along with friends and family wanted to find a way to honor his memory. The Moroccan Sheepherders had performed on back of their boat, Kemosabe, twice in 2012 and it seemed a fitting honor to continue the tradition by starting Artiepalooza. In August of 2013, a music and boats party was started and has continued each year since, except for 2018, which was canceled due to high winds. This year there were more than 400 boats attending.

“Each year we have raised money during the event for David’s Dream and Believe Cancer Foundation”, said Steve Warendorf of The Moroccan Sheepherders. “The event takes place on Blossom Cove on the Navesink, just northeast of Red Bank. Each year Feli’s brother Sam Donato brings his boat, Bad Donato, to house family and close friends for the day. Dominic Piccini has housed the band on his boat, Time Out, since 2016, (years 2013-2015 friend Ken Gallop housed the band on Big Kidd). Also, Rich and Amy Muska tie their boat up the Amy Lee, along with Mike Fissell’s boat, Sea Rascal. It’s a floating music city. It’s a truly amazing day.” In its sixth year, Artiepalooza raised almost $3,000.

RBR College Bound Students Benefit from IB Diploma In a very competitive environment to gain entrance to the country’s top colleges as well as preparation for an ever challenging global environment, students often look for ways to distinguish themselves among their peers. Seven of Red Bank Regional’s (RBR) recent graduates have accomplished that distinction by earning the prestigious International Baccalaureate diploma (IB). They include: Summer Smith, Sophia Pouso, Ashley Lloyd, Claire Lynch, Grace Noglows, Quinn Moore, and Brady Lynch. RBR introduced the worldwide renowned IB program nine years ago and remains one of only twelve high schools among the 511 in New Jersey that offers the program. Only 1000 among 37,000 high schools in the United States also offers the IB diploma. It is recognized by over 1600 universities and is taught in over 4,000 schools worldwide. The RBR program is supervised by RBR teachers Rose Powers and Lisa Boyle. College credit for their courses. It is distinguished by its rigor which includes an extensive essay writing component, class debate and discussion as well as a completion of continuous activities outside the classroom over two years (sports, extracurricular and community service.) Summer Smith of Little Silver earned her IB diploma this year and is headed to the University of Wisconsin to study political science on the pre-law tract. She states of her IB experience, “The program helped me significantly in writing and in discussion based on a college lecture class. I have written multiple research papers which were interesting and informative. And I do believe it helped me gain acceptance in many schools. My college counselor told me that the IB diploma was one of the most challenging things I could do in high school.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE www.CommunityMagazineNJ.com

The Noglows family of Little Silver is a great proponent of the program with three of their four RBR graduates earning IB diplomas. Their youngest, Grace Noglows will be attending The University of Colorado Boulder next year majoring in journalism. Their mother Judy Noglows states, “My children believe that the IB diploma helped them gain admittance to their respective universities and felt completely prepared for college work. My daughter Hannah earned a full college semester of credit for her IB work. (Hannah majored in International Studies at the University of Michigan.) Next year RBR hopes to grant 12 additional IB diplomas to this year’s rising seniors who recently received their IB pins as they enter the second and concluding year of the program. They are: Maxine Lloyd, Kyle Weisman, Cameron Nifoussi, Catherine Metzger, Lillian Thygeson, Chloe Rosen, Claire Petrone, Alexandre Decker, Eric Dykerhoff, Tor Haugenes, and Tyquann Crawford. Their class president, Lily Thygeson of Little Silver, has conferred with past graduates and states, “They all say that the writing requirements and other demands of IB have really prepared them for college. I can tell that my writing has improved in the time that I have been in the IB program and feel really prepared already.” For more information on the International Baccalaureate Diploma visit ibo.org. Photo: RBR’s IB Diploma students both seniors and juniors. The seniors are now college bound and benefitting from this unique and challenging program. Twelve rising seniors will hope to complete their diplomas next year.

Jersey Shore Ocean Facts Did you know…our little ocean realm off the Jersey Shore is SPECTACULAR! The water off the New Jersey and New York coast is called a “bight,” which means an indentation of the shoreline. Long Island jutting-out to the east and the Jersey Shore to the south creates a coastal triangle. These waters are downstream of the NY/NJ Metro region, which is the most densely populated urbanized area in the country.

LUNCH BREAK Back To School Drive

Help us make the first day of school a happy one! Now through August 12th

It is also fabulously & ecologically unique in many ways: • It is one of the rare places in the world where both warm water (The Gulf Stream) and cold water (The Labrador Current) flow past the coast, inviting both warm and cold water species and providing habitat for a spectacular diversity of marine mammals, including 33 species of whales and dolphins and 4 species of seals. • Believe it or not… the Hudson River continues offshore, creating the Hudson Canyon, an even grander “Grand Canyon”! It runs 400 miles diagonally out to the deepest depths of the ocean and is up to 200 miles deep. Little is known about its ecology, but what is known is fantastic.

• Bubble Gum Coral “trees” can be found in the deepest areas off our coast. They are very slow-growing pink corals 15 feet tall and may be up to 500 to 1000 years old. • Bottle-nose dolphins give birth in our coastal waters in June, feed on the abundance of fish during summer, and start their migration south to warm waters in September. • The common octopus lives just offshore. It has three hearts and are super smart, having the highest brain to body mass of all invertebrates. • Sea scallops have up to 100 tiny beautiful blue eyes which look like little pearls along the edge of their shells.

Back-to-School

‘Real’ Life Tips! By Hope Daniels Starting a new school year can be absolutely terrifying for your kid. Obviously moving up grade levels is the customary course in life, but that doesn’t make it any more comfortable walking into a new school, unknown hallway or unfamiliar classroom for the first time. We as parents, should compare it to some of our most intimidating first-time experiences, like showing up for our first day at work, being introduced to the in-laws, or going on our first family playdate. Ever! We all know these scenarios can turn out to be successful moments or unfortunate cringeworthy events. Oprah Winfrey once said, “Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom.” Do you remember what you needed to succeed in kindergarten, middle school or senior year? The best way to carefully handle such sensitive situations is to learn from students who have already witnessed the world your child is about to enter. My 7-year-old son said, “First grade is cold, so bring a sweatshirt for the classroom.” Check out these unforgettable quotes from current students to rally your child for back-to-school (by the way not all of these are as inspirational as Oprah’s). Pre-k: “You’ll have fun! You’ll meet new friends and your friends will be really nice. If anyone is not nice just walk away.” Must-have item: “Grapes! Every time I opened my lunch, I saw grapes and it made me happy because they’re my favorite.” Kindergarten: “Always bring a snack. One time my mom forgot to pack me with one and I was very sad.” Must-have item: “Crayons.” 1st Grade: “You should be a good listener.” Must-have item: “Friends because you will be happy to have someone special to hang out with.” 2nd Grade: “You get homework.” Must-have item: “A folder that carries your homework that won’t rip.” 3rd Grade: “The first rule you need to know about 3rd grade is to always have fun but make sure you’re being responsible with your decisions. Rule number two is always be kind to one another. In addition, rule number three is always accept new people and never exclude anybody.” Must-have items: “Meditation, deep breaths and something squishy as a stress ball.”

4th Grade: “It becomes more social and your friends start to become your squad.” Must-have items: “Your own personality because it gets you very far especially with making new friends. Plus, your creativity is used to decorate all your back-to-school supplies.” 5th Grade: “This grade is much harder than previous ones. Make sure you study.” Must-have items: “Don’t ever forget to bring your study book home the night before a test.” 6th Grade: “Pay attention to your teacher. If you start to daydream, push it away in your mind and look straight back at him or her.” Must-have item: “Water bottle” 7th Grade: “Try out for teams or join clubs. Sample many to see which one you enjoy or find interesting.” Must-have item: “A watch” 8th Grade: “Wear deodorant – don’t be the smelly kid.” Must-have item: “Five Star brand accordion canvas file was a life saver because it keeps all of your stuff neat and organized.” 9th Grade: “Don’t be shy, learn how to communicate with your teacher especially when you need to email them about an assignment from home.” Must-have item: “Chromebook or Computer” 10th Grade: “Procrastination is not your friend. Time management and balance are key to staying focused. You really don’t want to find yourself having barely started a month-long Civil War research paper four days before it’s due and then pulling an all-nighter to get it done.” Must-have item: “Hole puncher and planner to stay organized.” 11th Grade: “School spirit is a big deal. Make sure to purchase the right gear and logos for the sport you represent.” Must-have item: “Headphones by the pack.” 12th Grade: “Upcoming seniors should expect that everyone (your family, friends, teachers, advisors) will all start to ask you what you plan to study in college. I would advise, if you plan to go to college, that you research possible majors and see what interests you. If you don’t know what you want to study yet, that’s okay, too.” Must-have items: “Coffee and a good parking spot in the school lot.” Disclaimer: These are actual quotes from students of various ages.
