“We have nothing but praise for Christian. We were first time buyers in the USA, having only moved here two years prior. We truly lucked out with Christian. From start, to finish and beyond - he worked with us in an open and transparent manner and was completely supportive. He is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects, as you would expect however what adds to the pleasure of working with Christian is his mannerism, personality and speed of response. I’m not sure Christian ever takes a day off! We are also new to the area where we bought our home and his support is going beyond closing - very much above and beyond. THANK YOU. If you need a realtor, pick Christian Giamanco - you won’t be sorry!”

The new health buzzword is inflammation and many of us associate it with poor health. In actuality that’s only part of the story. We need inflammation that’s short lived to help our body respond to colds, cuts and bruises, and aid in our natural healing response. We call that the pro inflammatory response. Sometimes, however, the balance between our pro inflammatory and anti inflammatory response gets shifted and continues at at a low level wreaking havoc, and ultimately damaging our health. This chronic low level of inflammation has been linked to multiple health conditions like arthritis, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s. One of the most powerful approaches to protect against chronic inflammation is wisely choosing what’s at the end of your fork. The anti inflammatory diet, developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, provides a framework for keeping inflammation in balance for optimal health and well being. The anti inflammatory pyramid emphasizes healthy fats, more fruits and veggies in a rainbow of colors, limiting simple carbohydrates and animal fat, and using plenty of healing spices.

I am presently having a love affair with cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, and cauliflower. Part of the Brassicaceae family, they pack a powerful nutritional punch, and are rich in vitamins and minerals like folate and vitamin K. The darker green veggies of this family contain vitamin A and C, rich in fiber and low in calories. They contain a compound called glucosinolates, and in particular suloraphane, which has been shown to have both anti cancer and anti inflammatory effects. Try roasting, steaming, or tossing them in a variety of salads. Kale can be baked into crisp chips. Mash cauliflower into a pizza crust or use as a substitute for rice when grated. And Brussels sprouts can be tossed with savory olives, parmesan cheese, or even sweet maple syrup for a melt in your mouth side. Follow the three quarter rule and fill your plate with 75 percent vegetables, leaving the last quarter for grains and lean protein.

What you put on your plate can have a big impact on your overall health and wellness. Eat real food …. And Rediscover Wellness.

Rumson Teen Excels as

Classical Pianist and Composer BY SUSA N M U R PH Y

Rumson resident Hayden Marciszewski, an aspiring seventeen-year-old musician who enjoys piano, singing, and composing, has played Carnegie Hall and recently was awarded the Cecilian Music Society Scholarship from the Cecilian Music Club. Hayden began playing the piano at age five, was identified as having perfect pitch at age six, started formal piano lessons at age ten, and has been composing for eight years. Hayden, a senior at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, played percussion instruments in his freshman and sophomore years with the school’s concert band, and has played with the school’s jazz band for the last three years. On his website (HaydenMarciszewski.com), Hayden states that by age five he was keenly aware of classical pieces such as Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. “I owe a lot to my parents for introducing classical music to me at a very young age,” said Hayden. “My parents also used to play classical music out loud for me while I was still in my mother’s womb. I guess it paid off, as it certainly opened my horizons to classical music!”

Today, Hayden performs with Youth for Classical Music and serves as its Community Service Chairman and Vice President. He regularly plays piano at Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank with its contemporary celebration band. Aside from singing, composing, and playing piano, Hayden also plays the electric and acoustic guitar along with a bit of jazz drumming. He said playing piano is his “home” and it’s where he feels most comfortable as he has practiced for many years. “Choosing between playing guitar and

drums, I’d pick guitar right now as I’ve been playing that instrument for a number of years too,” said Hayden. “Drumming is one area I haven’t fully felt comfortable to perform for people, but I’ll get there eventually.” Last year, Hayden decided to make composing his life’s work. “I absolutely love composing and sharing my ideas with the world. My goal is to compose and perform music of different styles and genres, leveraging a range of cultural ideas,” said Hayden. “I’m very interested in composing music for film scores! I also love songwriting and recording, and my plan is to explore ways to do both, or at least incorporate ideas and techniques into both. A lot of classical music has been used in classic rock and progressive rock, and that’s definitely a potential path for me.” When asked what he sees himself doing by the age of 21, Hayden responded, “I’d envision myself composing small pieces for short films or shows to begin my journey! I’m very passionate about my profession and truly love sharing my ideas with anyone who wants to listen. I am extremely excited for the future!”

New Year, New Office BY PET ER C . PA R A S , ESQ.

Happy Ten Years, CM

In celebration of Community Magazine’s nostalgic look back in this Tenth Anniversary Edition, my first Divorce Talk (An Introduction, May 2012) is reprinted below. Some things have changed. I’m older and have now been practicing forty-four years. We’re living through a surreal global pandemic. And breaking news gets more bizarre each day. Some things, however, really haven’t changed, making the subject of my first Divorce Talk as relevant today as it was more than eight years ago

A special superhero-themed virtual event will be hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) this fall to celebrate and raise awareness of the Club’s “everyday heroes among us.” The Superhero Power Hour will be streamed live from the Asbury Park Unit of BGCM on October 1 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Special guest and long-time Club supporter Ming Chen of AMC’s Comic Book Men will share hosting duties with the Club’s Executive Director, Douglas Eagles. Guests of the event, which is sponsored in part by iStar, will be treated to a fun and action-packed hour with superhero special appearances, prizes, a craft cocktail demonstration from Asbury Park Distilling’s resident mixologist, and an up-close look at the work BGCM is doing right now. Opportunities to support the Club will be presented throughout the hour as well. “In the face of such challenges over the last few months, I am simply in awe of the way the Club community has adapted and forged a new way forward,” says Mr. Eagles. “They have demonstrated superhero strength in the face of adversity, and the Superhero Power Hour will call attention to and celebrate all of the Club’s heroes: our dedicated staff, our beyond-resilient kids and their families, and our faithful supporters.” Forced to cancel its signature annual fundraiser, A Most Unusual Evening earlier this year after the COVID-19 outbreak, BGCM has been looking for new ways to engage and rally the community to support the critical work the Club is doing. After suspending in-person programming in the spring, the Club pivoted to BGCM Boundless, a virtual enrichment program that allowed staff to remotely provide meaningful programming, mentorship, and support. Since March, the Club has served more than 15,000 grab-and-go meals to members and the surrounding community. The Club reopened its doors on July 6 to provide a much-needed reduced-capacity summer camp in Red Bank and Asbury Park, where breakfast and lunch are provided and children enjoy arts and crafts, sports, and academic enrichment. New Book Tells Ghost Tales of our Two Rivers “All along the beautiful shores of the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers people have encountered curious and unexplainable events for centuries,” writes Patricia Martz Heyer, a longtime history buff and author of Ghosts Along the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers. “Here you will meet a bevy of the ghostly persona which haunt our local shores. There are peculiar encounters with apparitions from the era of Prohibition, accounts from local cemeteries where the dead are not always at rest, a perplexing puzzle of a haunting at a farm along the Shrewsbury, and a phantom which is persistent in his hauntings. There are ice boat apparitions, unexplained sightings, unsolved mysteries, and even a ghostly golden retriever.” Ghosts Along the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, available mid-September, is a savory read recounting the paranormal and inexplicable encounters from along the peninsula between the two rivers. The book delves into the rich history of more than one hundred years, including reports that have circulated of the ghost of merciless slave master Lewis Morris. Locals say Morris can be seen scouring Passage Point Plantation in Rumson with a gaping hole where his heart should be. The frozen waters of the Navesink were a popular destination for iceboat sailing, and in her book Heyer claims many still say they see the face of a drowned teen in the ice after a tragic incident from 1906. Having a good knowledge of history, Heyer includes the tales of the native Lenapes and colonial Dutch who told eerie stories of the ancient forest of Ole Balm Hollow in Middletown, including phantom riders and the echoes of crying children. Heyer is a local resident and has written extensively for both children and adults throughout her career. Most recently she is the author of Shark Attacks of the Jersey Shore: A History, which was released in April, with another shark attacks project set in New York coming in 2021. She lives on the Navarumsunk peninsula with her husband and a rescued black cat named Gracie.

Middletown Foundation Awards $500,000 to N.J. School The Golden Dome Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit organization based in Middletown, has made a $500,000 gift to St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark. Mary Ellen Harris, president of the foundation, made the gift after learning about a new Girls Division at St. Benedict’s, started by students from Benedictine Academy (BA), the all-girls Catholic high school that closed permanently in June. Harris is an alumnae of BA. Her late husband, Robert H. Harris, Ph.D., is a 1964 graduate of St. Benedict’s. The couple founded the Golden Dome Foundation together in 2015, to support charitable causes. Harris said the gift would be evenly split between the new Girls Division and the Boys Division at St. Benedict’s. The investment will be used to support scholarships for financially needy students, especially for young women of the former Benedictine. “It’s a perfect opportunity,” said Harris. “We want to see the kids get a good education. They can’t do it on their own without people believing in them.” The Harrises met as students at their respective Benedictine high schools. Dr. Harris went on to The University of Notre Dame, earned a doctorate in biochemistry from Rutgers University, became a leading research scientist at Warner Lambert and American Home Products and held posts at the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes for Health (NIH), and Georgetown University Medical Center. At the urging of Mrs. Harris, he began his own company, Harris FRC Corp., and later developed VIMPAT®, a widely prescribed drug used in the treatment of epilepsy. Dr. Harris died in 2017. As president of the Golden Dome Foundation, Mrs. Harris makes a point of supporting philanthropic initiatives in her husband’s memory. In 2019, a gift from the foundation named the Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel. “Bob is still very present in my life,” Harris stated. “I like supporting institutions that have significance in his life.”

Frontline Heroes Challenge Kicks Off PHOTOS: TOM ZAPCIC PHOTOGRAPHY A collaborative partnership between Bridging the Gap for Veterans, HABcore, and America Salutes You unites a diverse team of America’s professional athletes, musicians, and celebrities, along with friends, families, and local communities in support of our frontline heroes by donating and using social media. On August 1, The Frontline Heroes Challenge kicked off its national initiative in Holmdel and it will continue through the year. On October 29, at the America Salutes You benefit concert in Nashville, TN, the Challenge will be recognized and brought to an even larger audience. “This nation needs this momentum of positivity, support, kindness and it’s for our families with children, individuals with special needs, those that are hungry and help for those who are now unemployed,” said Vince Papale, ‘The Invincible’, Philadelphia Eagles. “We want this Challenge to bring the nation together with hope and pride for one another.” The Challenge involves three easy steps: 1. Register to donate at habcore.org; 2. Record your ‘I Thank and Salute Frontline Heroes Message’; 3. Post and challenge three others to support the Frontline Heroes Challenge. @ frontlineheroeschallenge The goal of the collective challenge is to engage the nation, encourage positivity, and impact the country on a greater scale to support those in need. Ninety percent of the donated

net proceeds will be granted to nonprofit organizations: America Salutes You, HABcore, Bridging the Gap, Play Yellow, Warrior Angels Foundation and individual food banks and shelters across America. These Frontline Heroes provide services promoting and supporting veterans, first responders, behavioral health and wellness, foodbanks, domestic abuse prevention, and ending homelessness, throughout the United States. “This is the time where the country needs us caring and supporting one another more than ever, not just for today, but for the long haul,” said Marta Quinn, HABcore. Attending the kick-off were the founders and Frontline Team: Mike Ferraro, President of Bridging the Gap for Veterans; Bob Okun, Founder of America Salutes You; Adam McIndoe, President of Netwave; Marta Quinn, Director of Development, HABcore; along with professional athletes Brian Propp of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Vince Papale of the Philadelphia Eagles. “COVID-19 has begun rippling through the U.S. economy, causing layoffs, and putting lowwage workers at risk of being evicted,” said Steve Heisman, Executive Director, HABcore. “Advocating for agencies like HABcore during this crisis protects people who are at risk of losing their homes. HABcore anticipates an extreme spike in the need for housing and is pre-

Meet Your Neighbor

Pat Dunigan Local Artist CM: What is your earliest memory of knowing you loved making art? Pat Dunigan (PD): As a kid, I always had crayons and coloring books and colored pencil sets...and I always colored inside the lines! My grandmother used to take us to the beach to collect big clam shells to paint. I still collect clam shells, but now I love them untouched. Each one is different and they’re like pieces of sculpture CM: Do you have a favorite medium? PD: In college, I worked with oils on canvas and did some sculpture and photography. When I was traveling for work, I started cutting pieces of colored paper out of magazines and making collages in notebooks, and that eventually got me back into painting. Now, I work with almost anything that makes colors. I also paint on wood panels and I’d like to translate some of my geometric paintings and collages into 3D pieces sculptures and mobiles. I keep pushing myself to be bolder with colors, formats and styles. I did an almost life-size portrait of my nephew, which he loved! Now, I want to do more portraits. CM: What has influenced your art? PD: I’ve been so lucky to have traveled all over the world. Thirty years ago, I worked in Australia with a wonderful film director (and painter) named Patrick Russell. He taught me how to really “see” things, things that were all around that I previously had not seen the beauty in, especially colors. He taught me how to be bold with colors; to let them crash up next to each other and to combine unexpected things; to not follow any rules. Most recently, my favorite trips have been to the Greek islands and Sicily. I loved the intensity of the colors of the sea and the sky and the light and the starkness of the landscapes, and I’m now working on a series of paintings that are color impressions of these islands.

By LiliAnn Paras

CM: What are some of the challenges of being an artist? What is the most satisfying part? PD: The challenges often become the most satisfying parts. Wondering if I’m ever going to have a new idea...but then something comes to me! There are times a piece is not turning out how I imagined it, and I’ve learned to just let it sit for a while and eventually I see it in a new way and know what to do. And, if something is really not working, to just move on to something new. One of the best parts is opening the door to my studio each day. It always makes me happy and feel like something great could happen. I’d love to find an old industrial building I could fix up as a studio and place to live.

To walk into Pat Dunigan’s Rumson art studio is to enter an unintended, three-dimensional collage art installation. The vivacious colors and the variations in materials and sizes are everywhere. Look up-art is hanging from the rafters; look down-arrangements grace the tables and floors; look around at eye level- art overlaps on the walls. It is not surprising then, to discover Pat is a multimedia artist with a special focus on painting and bold colors. Art has always been a significant CM: Favorite Quote? part of Pat’s life and plays a big role in her advertising, film and PD: There are two simple thoughts I have always liked. One is, television production career. Even her hobbies of gardening and “You had me at Hello.” I like how this is just a simple, immediate, travel are revealed in her work. and instinctive feeling. Ranney School’s 63-member Class of 2020 celebrated its Commencement on the campus of Ranney School on July 11. Twenty of the seniors, known as “Ranney Lifers,” had attended the school for 10 or more years. Next fall, the group will head off to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities across the country, including Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, and University of Notre Dame. For a complete list of colleges, visit ranneyschool. org. The Class of 2020 demonstrates one of the important qualities that Ranney stresses: resilience. As all seniors were faced with uncharted global issues this year, the Ranney seniors rose to the occasion and led the Panthers with determination and perseverance. The Class of 2020 was the first class to take AP exams at home, the first to produce their year-long Capstone research projects via live, interactive YouTube presentations, and the first to have a socially distanced graduation on Ranney’s Campus in Tinton Falls. Ranney Student Council President Derek Vastola of Colts Neck (Harvard University) began a weekly Ranney News Network Show called Quarantine Weekly that showed off what members of the campus were doing in their time away from school, raising the spirits of the community while bonding the members from afar. Ranney students are encouraged to discover and engage all of their unique talents and interests through robust student life programs and a nurturing learning community. The class represents a diverse group with talents that showcase a wide range of passions. There were 40 seniors who were National Honor Society members, and 13 seniors inducted into Cum Laude Society. Members of the Class of 2020 reached the National Tournament for both the History Bowl and the Academic Quiz Bowl for four years in a row. The Class of 2020 had representation at AllShore and AllState Performing Arts Ensembles: Sam Novotny of Freehold (New York University, Steinhardt) in the All-Shore Jazz Band; and Haocheng Bai of Freehold (New York University) in the All-Shore Honors Chorus and All-State Mixed Chorus. Emily Chang of Holmdel (University of Pennsylvania) was awarded the U.S. Figure Skating Gold Level Graduating Seniors Award. Autumn Siliato of Wall (University of South Carolina) was featured on Fox Business News for creating a philanthropic equestrian clothing line. For the full story, visit CommunityMagagazineNJ.com.

Calling All Artists for the 42nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition

Stay Strong, Healthy, & Positive Now, more than ever, our health, immune systems, and nutrition are critically important.

Achieve Long-Term Health Results with an Easy, Convenient, Fun Program FREE Personalized One-On-One Coaching “Selfie” by Peter Meadowsong, Transparent Watercolor, 2018 from the 41st Annual Juried Exhibition

Since the Annual Juried Art Exhibition was founded by the Monmouth County Arts Council in 1979, the exhibition has been presented at the Monmouth Museum. In 2011 the Monmouth Museum assumed complete sponsorship of the exhibition. The same year, the museum expanded the call for entries to be international. As a result, the Annual Juried Art Exhibition has become a refreshing representation of creative talent from around the world. Alongside local New Jersey artists, the Annual Juried Art Exhibition has included artists from Japan, Russia, Lithuania, Israel, and Germany. This year, the Monmouth Museum presents the 42nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition. It is accepting artwork of all media and styles to feature in its Main Gallery and will be continuing the tradition of showcasing diverse and international art. Monmouth Museum is also advancing its goal of focusing on the underrepresented in the arts and providing a platform for a broad group of artists. The Monmouth Museum’s goal is to engage artists and the community in promoting inclusivity of gender, age, background, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and special needs. Deadline to submit is October 1 by midnight. For more information, visit monmouthmuseum.com.

A 10TH ANNIVERSARY is traditionally called the Tin Anniversary because tin and aluminum represent the qualities of endurance and flexibility. In modern times, a 10th anniversary is marked with diamonds due to their unbreakable strength and how they are created through pressure and tenacity. So as we at CM celebrate our 10th year bringing the community together in our pages, we are proud to say through endurance and with flexibility and the strength of the people who have come together to make our magazine the diamond that it is, we celebrate a decade of all that makes Monmouth County an amazing place to live and work. Through the years we have had the privilege of bringing you, our readers, a myriad of stories and a visual history of our collective lives. We have had the good fortune to conduct interviews with some of the most recognized names in entertainment and sports as well as exceptional neighbors, and to bring you behind the scenes stories from our sponsorships of various notable events. We’ve cried with you when our hearts were collectively broken, and we’ve celebrated with you when our kids, our teams, our non-profits, or our friends achieved greatness. Everything in our magazine either originates in or connects back to Monmouth County. Every one of us on staff lives and works in our community, and honestly, we love what we do and being part of all of your lives. Because we know local matters.

IN THE BEGINNING…

Brian Kirk: Jersey Shore Legend

When Community Magazine (CM) first launched, the only towns that received our publication were Colts Neck and Holmdel and we had no website or presence on social media. Through the years, not only has our town reach expanded, but rather quickly our presence in the digital world allowed us to reach anyone who could type in our web address. Though our page count and paper weight have changed, the defining constant has been the dedication of our staff. Several members have been with the magazine since day one, including Editor-in-Chief Carolyn Burtnick and Creative Director Lori Donnelly (see story on the people behind CM on page 33).

There is no better example of the heart for giving our community shares than through the non-profits that work tirelessly to raise money, offer programming, or stock shelves with food. In November of 2017, our Giving Back issue focused on the philanthropy of the Grunins, Kicking Cancer Overboard, and Fulfill, formerly known as the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean. We were honored to have Oprah Winfrey on our cover as she launched her brand of food, O That’s Good!, directly aiding local families through Fulfill. We have also featured or partnered with Impact 100, Lunch Break, No Limits Cafe, Holiday Express, the Ashley Lauren Foundation, Mary’s Place by the Sea, Clean Ocean Action, CPC Behavioral Health, the Monmouth Park Charity Fund, the Frances Foundation, and too many more to name.

Oprah is just one of the many world-renowned celebrities who have graced our cover or pages. Each has a direct connection to our area or lives among us. Some of our favorites have been Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and his son, Donny Osmond, Frankie Valli, Gloria Gaynor, Patti LuPone, Sarah McLaughlin, Debbie Harry, Steven VanZandt, John Roberts, Danica McKellar, Candace Cameron-Bure, and Danny DeVito. There are also more local celebrities like Brian Kirk, Stephanie Klemons, Tim McLoone, and Danny Clinch who have become friends to the magazine. Danny Clinch has been especially generous, allowing us to use his world-famous photograph of Bruce for our cover and having CM as the only New Jersey publication sponsoring the Sea.Hear.Now Festival alongside outlets such as Rolling Stone. Creative Director Lori was able to get an amazing cover shot of Dave Matthews that has become a favorite for many of us. continued on next page >>

Sea.Hear.Now is just one of the many sponsorships we have secured throughout these 10 years, including the Asbury Park Music and Film Festival, the Catsbury Park Convention, Christmas Con alongside Hallmark, eWomen Network, all three Colts Neck, Little Silver, and Rumson Kitchen Tours, the Little Silver and the Red Bank 5Ks, the Monmouth Film Festival, and many others. But perhaps the magazine’s Vice-Chair Sponsorship of the New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Asbury Park was the event that left us most star-struck. We were given amazing access for interviews, backstage, and the red carpet, and spoke with and photographed too many stars that night to even mention in print. Check out our photo gallery on our website to see and read all about it.

Sometimes the most rewarding part of an issue we print is having the opportunity to highlight some of the people among us doing really great work. Our Meet Your Neighbor features are intended to introduce our readers to the business owners in their community and the movers and shakers who are having an impact everywhere they go. We have featured literally hundreds of locals, including such recognizable names as Carol Stillwell, Ann Walsh, Cindy Zipf, Kim Guadagno, Nancy Zarriello, Bobby Ciasulli, and the Reichnitzes.

So much so that we have been able to offer profiles of national treasures such as Bernie Williams, Jim Nance, Joe Theismann, Jessica Springsteen, Ashley Higginson, and local Olympian A.J. Muss.

The Jersey Shore Partnership Summer Celebration scheduled for September 14 at Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook, has been cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns. Introduced in 1997, the event is a highlight of the Jersey Shore summer season. The Partnership is grateful to its many supporters and the Summer Celebration team that come together each year to kickoff summer at the Jersey Shore. Next year’s Summer Celebration is scheduled for June 7, 2021. At the 2021 Summer Celebration, the nonprofit will recognize the 2020 Dinner Chairs Valerie and Frank Montecalvo and Honorees AtlantiCare, OceanFirst Bank and Suez and the many corporate and business leaders, not-for-profits, environmental groups, academic institutions, and elected officials. The Summer Celebration Committee under Event Chair Grace Hanlon is key to the success for this well-recognized network event. The group of Partnership Board members and community representatives convenes monthly starting in January to plan and design the upcoming Summer Celebration. Adding to the Committee’s enthusiasm is the Young Professional Committee chaired by the leaders of the Monmouth County’s Young Democrat and Young Republican Clubs. The Committee was organized for the 2019 Summer Celebration to bring together business associates ages 21-35 committed to protecting and preserving the Jersey coast for future generations. Nearly 150 supporters gathered at an outdoor benefit given by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. Proceeds from the event will help support new virtual Girl Scout programs created in response to COVID-19 and underwrite membership fees for girls facing financial hardships. “Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is thankful for our community’s strong response,” said Eileen Higgins, Chief Executive Officer of the organization, which serves more than 10,000 girls in Monmouth and Ocean counties. “The generous support will enable us to provide high-quality programming that gives girls opportunities to build leadership skills and to work together in new ways that meet the needs of families during this unprecedented time.” The focal point of the gala was celebrating the achievements of seven inspiring community leaders, who Higgins said reflect the “go-getter” spirit of Girl

The Lakewood BlueClaws, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, and longtime supporter of Girl Scouts, received the Community Partner Award. Wayne Boatwright, vice president of diversity and inclusion at Hackensack Meridian Health, was honored as this year’s Man Enough to be a Girl Scout.

Boatwright was unable to attend because of a death in his family. “We are truly honored to recognize exemplary leaders in our community who live the Girl Scout mission of making the world a better place by leading with courage, confidence, and character,” Higgins said. Kristen Miller, chief development officer for Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, attributed the event’s success to the hard-working volunteer committee led by Co-Chairs Teri O’Connor, board chairperson and Monmouth County administrator, and Tom Hayes, director of consumer and community relations at New Jersey Natural Gas. “Our children are going through a difficult time,” said Higgins. “But we’re here to give girls from all backgrounds opportunities to learn, have fun, make friends, and make the world a better place.” For more information on supporting or joining Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, visit GSFun.org

Meet Your Neighbor:

Dr. Denise Wunderler BY C AT H Y PA D I LL A

When you meet her, you instantly like her and feel empowered by her energy and cando attitude. She’s an athlete, a Sports Medicine Physician, a wife and mother, and very involved in several local nonprofits. She’s also the International Team Physician for USA Volleyball/FIVB since 2009 and has traveled to Peru, Guatemala, Canada, and Cuba in support of Team USA. But locally you may know her as the founder of Team Vienna, because behind her beautiful, bright smile is a mom learning to deal with unimaginable grief by working to make sure it stops happening to other children. Meet your neighbor, Dr. Denise Wunderler.

Who I am: Dr. Denise Wunderler, DO, FAOASM Sports Medicine physician. I live in Holmdel with my husband, Dr. Mike Savino. I’m a mom to three wonderful kids, two on Earth, one in Heaven. Vienna died on November 12, 2017 at 2.8 years old of Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). My nonprofit: Team Vienna 4 SUDC Awareness, Inc. We were incorporated on what should have been Vienna’s fourth birthday on Jan 19, 2019. Officially gained 501c3 nonprofit status in March 2019. Our website: Vienna. team. Why I started Team Vienna: My sweet, healthy, toddler Vienna Carly Savino died suddenly. I originally created Team Vienna as part of the Run with the Royals 5K in Sea Bright to benefit children’s school programs, to honor my Vienna. I thought only 20 people would join, but almost 300 signed up! Team Vienna eventually evolved into a 501c3 nonprofit a year later so we could elevate all the projects to a higher level to make a much larger impact on awareness, education, and research. Vienna was two months short of her third birthday when she fell asleep while watching TV at home and never woke up. Her death was categorized as SUDC, Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood, which is the sudden, unexpected death of a child (1 to 18 years old) that is still unexplained after a thorough investigation, autopsy, and medical record review. Even her genetics study (as part of research) did not reveal a cause of death. Despite my husband and I being physicians, shockingly we never heard of SUDC. No one we knew ever heard of SUDC, but everyone heard of SIDS (unexplained deaths in babies under one year old).

40

SUDC is not in the educational curriculum at any level for physicians. Realizing very quickly how SUDC is greatly unknown in the medical community and general public, I sought out to change that, and educate the world about Vienna’s story and SUDC, so ultimately, the daily torture of losing a child can be spared from other families. Hopefully all these Vienna projects will ignite more SUDC research to uncover causes so it can be prevented one day. Our family is enrolled in three separate research studies in an attempt to understand SUDC and uncover the reason for Vienna’s death, which will hopefully shed light on other kids’ deaths.

Dr. Denise Wunderler, DO, FAOASM with her family in 2017.

What sets my charity apart from others: I am very passionate about the legacy of my daughter Vienna and telling her story to educate the medical community and general public. I am willing to think outside the box to inspire more people to care about this cause and draw more attention. I even played guitar and sang the first verse of my daughter’s song, I Think About You (Song for Vienna), before presenting my TED-style talk at a national physicians conference in Baltimore. Doctors don’t do that!

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

(Dr. Denise Wunderler wrote a message to Vienna a few months after she died, and then two months later texted the words to Ray Andersen, Vienna’s favorite musician. Within days, he created music to the words and performed the song) My next goal: National TV coverage and a documentary about Vienna’s story and SUDC. My friends have suggested I write an autobiography. Best life tips to share: I have many! Be the most positive person you know. Never give up on your dreams, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did. Don’t allow others to dissuade you from your dreams. Many times, not having a travel plan will give you the best adventures you could never plan. Also travel solo if you can, you will learn a lot about yourself. Good luck is when hard work meets opportunity. Plan your work and work your plan. The biggest influence on my life: My amazing parents who have been married for almost 60 years. They gave me the stable foundation growing up that allowed me to dream, work hard, fail, and achieve whatever goals I set out for myself, including playing collegiate basketball, getting into medical school, driving solo across the country multiple times, completing a month clinical rotation in rural Alaska taking care of Yup’ik Eskimo natives, summitting a 16,000-foot peak in Nepal, summiting Mt. Hood (Oregon volcano), and riding my snowboard down the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. For the full interview, visit CommunityMagazineNJ.com.

Excavations at Historic Smokehouse Yield Interesting Finds

Dr. Richard Veit digging an excavation unit at the base of the smokehouse.

Under a sweltering summer sun and the occasional thunderstorm, Richard and Douglas Veit spent a couple of days digging square pits alongside the remains of a 19th Century smokehouse on the grounds of the Taylor-Butler House in Middletown. The smokehouse, built into a small hillside just north of the grand Italianate mansion colloquially known as Orchard Home, was largely neglected when the Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) acquired the grounds in 1999. MCHA is planning to restore the smokehouse, once an integral part of the home’s domestic landscape, thanks to generous grants from the 1772 Foundation, in cooperation with the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Monmouth County Historical Commission. “Most 19th Century smokehouses are long gone by now, so MCHA is fortunate to have this opportunity,” said Joe Zemla, MCHA’s associate curator. “We are very appreciative of the work done by Rich and Douglas Veit in helping us preserve this unique piece of history.” In 1853, Joseph Dorset Taylor and his wife Mary Holmes Taylor left their New York home to return to the ancestral Taylor family farm, located on present-day King’s Highway in Middletown Village Historic District. Here, they built Orchard Home. At the time of its construction the Taylor residence was considered the finest in Middletown, graced with all the modern amenities of the pre-Civil War era. Situated on acres of pristine orchard, the estate was equipped with a service courtyard, complete with an array of outbuildings such as an icehouse, a two-story privy, and a brick smokehouse, the latter being the traditional means of curing and storing meats prior to the advent of electric refrigeration. “Restoring the smokehouse will give visitors insight into the day-to-day workings of the household and the lives of the servants employed by the Taylor family,” said Meg Sharp Walton, Executive Director of MCHA. “We are grateful to the 1772 Foundation and the Monmouth County Historical Commission for making the restoration possible.” The test excavations at the base of the structure were able to determine that the foundation is indeed stable despite outward appearances. As an added bonus, several 19th century artifacts were uncovered from the shovel pits, including shards of transfer-printed whiteware, cut nails, an animal rib, fragments of a glass inkwell, and the broken remains of a large glass bottle. Artifacts recovered near the Taylor Butler smokehouse, including a fragmentary inkwell, blue transfer-printed whiteware, and an unidentified animal rib.

Dr. Richard Veit, Professor of Anthropology and Chair of the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University, and his son, Douglas Veit, made another intriguing discovery just a few yards from the smokehouse, where shovel tests confirmed the location of a former underground icehouse. Prior to home refrigeration, outdoor icehouses were insulated with straw or sawdust to keep freshly cut river ice frozen throughout the warmer months. This structure was revealed to be much larger than previously estimated, with a diameter of roughly 20 feet. Dr. Veit noted that the size of the icehouse at Orchard Home is unique, as it is uncharacteristic of others found in Monmouth County. Since its founding in 1898, MCHA has enriched the quality of life in Monmouth County by preserving its heritage for future generations. It is the Association’s mission to “preserve and celebrate the history of Monmouth County for all.” The largest history-focused private non-profit organization in New Jersey, MCHA operates a museum, archives, and research library at its headquarters in Freehold in addition to owning and/or operating five historic house museums located throughout the county that tell the story of the founding of the country. MCHA brings history to life and engages thousands of residents and businesses in the community each year through its insightful and meaningful programs and exhibitions. Though the Association’s properties are currently closed due to the pandemic, visitors are welcome to visit the grounds of Orchard Home and MCHA’s other historic properties. Orchard Home is available to rent for private events. Please visit MCHA’s website for rental information and for updates on reopening plans at MonmouthHistory.org.

He holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. Besides teaching, Pfister also served as a coach, and advisor during his tenure at RFH,and is excited to rejoin the school community. “It is an honor and privilege to return to Rumson and Fair Haven as the next principal,” said Pfister. “I look forward to reconnecting with the dedicated students, families, staff, administration, and community members that make the RFH school community so special.”

Kevin Pfister, who began his career at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH), has been approved as the next principal for the school according to Superintendent Debra Gulick. Pfister is currently the acting principal at Mountain Lakes High School in Morris County. The search included the input of the community, parents, students, and faculty. After reviewing dozens of applications, a comprehensive multi-round interview process took place. “It was clear that Mr. Pfister would bring a fresh outlook to RFH,” said Gulick. “During the search and selection process, in addition to his passion for RFH, Mr. Pfister consistently

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Recognized as a Common Sense School Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, has recognized Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) as a Common Sense School. With the current situation and reliance on virtual teaching tools, RFH’s commitment to digital literacy for its students and the community couldn’t be timelier. RFH has demonstrated its commitment to taking a wholecommunity approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying. innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources specifically since February in all core classes and will continue and expand implementation throughout the 2020-2021 Academic Year. The resources, created in collaboration with researchers from Project Zero, led by Howard Gardner at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, were chosen for their accessibility and relevance; they are grounded in the real issues students and teachers face. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to internet safety, protecting online reputations and personal privacy, media balance, managing online relationships, and media literacy. The free K–12 curriculum is used in classrooms across all 50 states, in more than 65,000 schools by more than 750,000 educators. “We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” said Debra Gulick, Superintendent. “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.”

Annual Education Open Golf Outing

T

he Brookdale Community College Foundation will host the 41st Annual Education Open Golf Outing on September 24 at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club in Farmingdale. The shotgun start begins at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Invest in Student Success Scholarship fund. “With these scholarships and grants, many students earn their associate degree at Brookdale, transfer to four-year institutions to achieve their undergraduate degrees or start their careers after completing a certificate program at Brookdale,” said Timothy Zeiss, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Our supporters, donors, and sponsors are helping hundreds of students to achieve their academic and professional goals.” Front Line Brookdale Alumni Nichole Schumann and Jorge Terreros will be honored at the awards dinner in recognition for their service and commitment to helping others impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nichole Schumann is a nurse work-

ing at the Christian Brothers Academy De La Salle Hall, a Long-Term Care Nursing Home. She has been working 1216 hour shifts ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Some of the staff at her facility became ill and they were running on a skeletal team. Nichole stayed at the facility and was available 24/7 to care for the elderly residents. She is a young married student handling her job as a frontline nurse, a student who stayed engaged with the virtual classroom, completed all her school assignments, and managed her home.

Jorge Terreros started as a student at Brookdale Community College in the Business Administration program and graduated in 2004. He went on to pursue his degree from Rutgers and is presently working on his master’s degree. He has been working at Brookdale in many departments including in Registration, as an Academic Advisor, Student Success Coach, and he is presently the Director of the Branch Campus in Freehold. Jorge is being honored for what he has done for Brookdale, its students, and his fam-

ily and extended family during this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jorge’s grandmother and his father were hospitalized with the virus and both succumbed to the awful disease. Jorge, the oldest of three brothers, rose to the challenge as the new patriarch of his family. He had the lonely task of arranging for burials during a time when no one could be there to mourn. Without missing a beat as he transitioned from one position to another at the college, with only a short time to grieve, he was back on the job serving his two roles as needed. He was working with students, offering the important support they needed to navigate the difficulties of the COVID-19 virus, the transition to remote learning, and the emotional difficulties they faced. He assisted students who needed his help in applying for CCOG aid, especially those who rely on his bi-lingual expertise. He was instrumental in helping the culinary students finish their spring semester and the hands-on part of the program in the summer semester. Brookdale is proud to honor him with this alumni award due to his professionalism, dedication, and perseverance in the face of great sorrow and many challenges. The all-day outing will include a deli lunch, an open bar, and a post-play BBQ Buffet on the Outdoor Patio & 19th Hole. Golfers may win individual and team prizes, including two hole-in-one contests. The Brookdale Foundation is selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle that will have no more than 500 tickets sold and the winner will be announced at the awards BBQ buffet. Winner need not be present.
