As we gather this month to celebrate Thanksgiving, we are reminded to be grateful, to be kind, and to be generous. A day for family and friends, food and football. It’s a time to take note of our good fortune and recognize many of our neighbors who may not share our blessings. I know we have all become too busy - with work, the kids, and the list goes on – but let’s make it a priority to give back to those in need. There are so many worthy nonprofits in Monmouth County helping the less fortunate, some of them are in the pages to follow. I believe everyone can help in some way, whether it’s with volunteering or by making a monetary donation. Personally, the joy I feel volunteering is unparalleled, such a rewarding experience on both ends. So figure out who or what you would like to help, I guarantee there is a charity out there for you!

Cover Story – Andy Kaiser What prompts a wildly successful, suit-wearing Wall Street guy originally from Long Island with absolutely no background in education to trade his work life in for mowing the lawn, feeding the goats on a 12-acre farm that comes with a preschool? And how did he manage to get his likewise successful wife to not only go along with this, but agree to run the school? The answer is found in our cover story on page 32.

Giving Thanks We at CM hope you enjoy all this month has to offer. With the holiday season upon us, I hope we all take the time to remember what’s most important – family and friends. We are certainly grateful for you, our readers and advertisers, and we wish you and your family the happiest Thanksgiving.

All my best to you,

our passion for dance and fitness with our clients. We know that when they come dance with us, we’re able to set the tone for the rest of their day. The Most Challenging Part of What We Do: We offer monthly challenges to our clients, for example - take 21 classes in 30 days. This helps keep them motivated to strive for a specific goal. We know these challenges need to be inventive and creative to keep our clients engaged. We try our best to mix it up and make it fun. Also, staying up to date with our current music choices and choreography. Our best tip to share: After taking the leap ourselves into this new role, our best tip would be to go for it and see what happens. Don’t be afraid of the unknown. Our Business Mantra: “This is My Happy Hour.” We want everyone who walks through our doors to leave saying that it was the best hour of their day. They were able to leave all their worries outside and just take an hour for themselves to have fun and dance, maybe not even realizing they are working out!

DANZhouse Fitness Photo: Joanne Nizolek (left) and Jackie Lukas

Joanne Nizolek, Red Bank, and Jackie Lukas, Morganville, have combined their love for fitness and dance with an entrepreneurial spirit at DANZhouse Fitness in Shrewsbury. This past June the now partners, who had been working at the studio as head instructors, made the transition to owning the business. Open to all levels of fitness with no dance experience required, Joanne and Jackie encourage their clients to move beyond fear and try something new and fun. What Our Business is About: Danzhouse Fitness is a total body workout program consisting of several unique, signature workouts, all found under one roof. We offer original choreography and dance technique that is easy-to-learn and easy-to-follow. Danzhouse offers an opportunity for people to experience an ultimate body transformation through a truly unique fitness journey. Why We Chose the Fitness Business: Dance and fitness are two things we are both passionate about. We’ve both danced our entire lives and received Dance degrees from college. By marrying dance and fitness together, we are able to help motivate women (and men!) to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle all while having fun. What Sets Us Apart from Others: We create all our own choreography and add new dances every week. So our repertory is always growing. We offer a wide range of classes from a dance cardio class to a sculpting class with weights, bands, and barre. One of our client’s favorite classes is a choreography class where we teach new dances through step-by-step instruction, so clients leave feeling confident and accomplished that they’ve learned something new. We also offer a no commitment kids’ program-where the kids can just show up and dance. Best of all, you don’t need dance experience to come dance with us. We have clients who have dance experience and so many that never formally danced a day in their lives. The Most Rewarding Part of What We Do: We are so fortunate to go to work every day and do what we love. We love sharing

Bruce Springsteen paid a surprise guest appearance at the Dancing in the Dark Preview Party celebrating the Monmouth County Historical Association exhibit Springsteen: His Hometown on September 28. Springsteen first toured the exhibit at the MCHA museum in Freehold and then took the stage with Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers for a performance of “Light of Day”. Seven hundred fellow attendees of the sold out party also enjoyed a first look at the Springsteen: His Hometown exhibit as well as special performances from Bobby Bandiera and Grushecky. Freehold’s On Location Catering by Metropolitan Cafe provided a variety of food and libations throughout the evening. The casual tented-party included an auction with rare memorabilia and entertainment items, as well as the opportunity to view the iconic truck Springsteen and Carl “Tinker” West drove cross country. Brian Williams, veteran MSNBC and NBC news anchor and native of Middletown, served as Honorary Chair of the event. Proceeds from the event benefit the mission of MCHA to preserve and celebrate the history of Monmouth County for all. Springsteen: His Hometown is an historical exhibit that provides a comprehensive look of how Monmouth County has been thematically woven into Bruce Springsteen’s music and art throughout his career. Displaying more than 50 unique items featuring selections from both the Monmouth County Historical Association and The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University, the exhibition officially opened on September 29 and will run through Fall 2020.

Beginning with the statement that art has the ability to bring us together and change the way we look at the world, RFH students were invited to connect with members of the community both in and outside of school. BEYOND THE BRAND CHRISTINA DEPASCALE OPENS SCHEร L SPA IN RUMSON

Exquisite space, unique gifts, & a friendly vibe greet each person at the brand new Scheรกl Spa.

STORY LILIANN PARAS PHOTOS LORI DONNELLY

18

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

Owner Christina Depascale loves to banter and laugh with her clients, making the treatments that much more enjoyable.

CHRISTINA IS AN EMPATH HEALER AESTHETICIAN, a true “skin guru”, having studied organic chemistry for years, earning many certifications. Raised between Europe and Rumson, she honed her craft working side by side with makeup magnate Laura Mercier for more than 16 years, treating such luminaries as the princesses of Georgia and Turkey and many celebrities. Last month, Christina opened Scheál Spa in her hometown of Rumson where skin treatments are based on individual skin issues, rather than a rigid menu of services. She is a big believer in technology and often combines many different systems in one treatment. And, Christina formulates her own custom skin care line of products on site, Scheál Organics. She has a philosophy of “giving back” with a special emphasis on helping women who have experienced domestic violence. Meet your neighbor, Christina Depascale. CM: What is the origin of the name Scheál? (pronounced “Shee Al”)

Scheál is named in honor of my mother. It was her last name and means “she heals”- so it fits perfectly. Unfortunately, my mother suffered domestic violence and it is a big part of why I formed LOVE -Love Overcomes Violence Everywhere. I try to set aside one day each week to give free facials to women presently experiencing domestic violence, and I also donate a portion of proceeds to organizations helping women recover. CM: How did you get started in skin care? In my mid-twenties I experienced severe acne. I had access to so many products, but nothing was working for me. So, I threw myself into skin school to heal myself. I started making compounds and healed myself in a couple of weeks. Then I started making it for everyone else and it started taking off. CM: How is Scheál different from other spas? Music, Original Products, Makeup, Rewards, and Giving Back. When we meet new clients, we make a note of the type of music they prefer to have played during the treatments. I created an organic line of Scheál products which

I make fresh each week. We carry a natural makeup line and I give lessons, accentuating how to achieve a flawless skin appearance. I keep it simple using only a little bit of product and just a few steps. Scheál also has a rewards program to use on future treatments. Another way Scheál is different is in our giving back to women suffering domestic violence. CM: Is there a success story that stands out to you? (Laughs) I’ve had husbands call and tell me to keep doing whatever I am doing for their wives, because it is helping, and I tell them not to forget they can always purchase gift certificates. Women joke and tell me they “used to be ugly.” But one client who stands out is a young woman who came to me with severe acne. Within 18 days after starting treatment she looked like a completely different person. A man at the gym where she attended for three years didn’t recognize her. She broke my heart when she reflected that she felt the acne was a type of handicap, that she never realized she had gotten used to the way people looked at her differently. Now she is more confident. CM: What are the advantages of using Scheál products? Unlike manufactured products, which are made months in advance with preservatives, I personally make fresh batches of Scheál products each week. They have a distinct vitality, and the beneficial results on all types of skin are noticeable very quickly. I use only organic ingredients based in aloe, cucumber and chamomile, and they are extremely healing. They calm the skin and allow the skin to heal. Skin is alive and wants to be our best friend. But we tend to fight against it, and try to rip it off, or mask it or laser it. When skin is calmer it will look softer. As we age, and from sun damage, we get more dead skin which makes our skin appear thicker and makes us “turn into a raisin”. I help get rid of spots and the thick skin. I love to make the skin glow! VNA Beach Ball raises close to $400,000 The third edition of Beach Ball, the popular fundraiser, returned to Sea Bright’s iconic Chapel Beach Club on September 14 raising nearly $400,000 for Visiting Nurse Association’s (VNA) Children & Family Health Institute. More than 550 friends and supporters of the VNA left their dress shoes and formal clothes at home and felt the sand between their toes at this festive and casual gathering that raised funds for thousands of vulnerable, at-risk patients.

“The VNA is incredibly grateful for the support of the hardworking volunteer committee, Ansell, Grimm & Aaron, our Honorary Chairs, as well as sponsors and attendees,” said Lynn Spector, Chairman of the VNA Foundation Board. “The evening was a tremendous success and it was wonderful to see many familiar and new faces coming together to help us meet and exceed our fundraising goal to support vulnerable families and children in our community.” The law firm of Ansell Grimm & Aaron, PC was honored for the many years of generous support of the VNA and the community. 2019 Honorary Chairwomen Debbie Ansell, Mary Ansell, and Madlyn Aaron were recognized for their devotion of time and energy to VNA fundraising activities through the years. “We were so excited to welcome Nora and Kenny King and Suzanne and Shawn Rubin to the Beach Ball team as co-chairs,” commented Maryam Spector who, along with her husband Jesse, joined veteran co-chairs Jill and Jamie Drummond and Sandy and Vanessa Mulheren. “Their enthusiasm and fresh perspective have been wonderful additions. All the volunteers work so hard to ensure the event is a success.” Under a gorgeous shore theme decorated tent featuring paper lanterns and a chandelier of coral and sparkling fish, partygoers enjoyed an eclectic array of Jersey Shoreinspired fare from some of the area’s most popular food trucks, as well as renowned local restaurants. Under a starlit sky, revelers pulled up an Adirondack chair to the fire pit for s’mores and danced the night away to the music of Juke Box Criminals. To cap off the evening, Co-chair Jamie Drummond drew the winning raffle ticket for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4X4. The lucky winner was Kimberly Smith of Fair Haven.

YOUR CERTIFIED PROBATE REAL ESTATE SPECIALIST

Impact 100 Jersey Coast, which celebrates a milestone of giving more than one million philanthropic dollars to local nonprofits in Monmouth County in just four years, has announced the finalists for its four 2019 high-impact grants of $110,000 each. To date, the organization has awarded $727,000 in grants to local nonprofits. In 2019, with this latest round of grants, Impact will have raised a total of nearly $1.2 million in grants in Monmouth County. “Impact 100 Jersey Coast empowers women to dramatically improve Monmouth County by collectively funding grants of $100,000 or more to initiatives that support our local communities,” said Impact 100 Jersey Coast President and Co-founder, Deirdre O’Brien Spiropoulos. “Every year, we are grateful to learn from and support nonprofit organizations, and we invite and seek women from all backgrounds to join our giving network.” The five 2019 finalists are: Asbury Park Music Foundation (Arts and Culture), Clean Ocean Action (Environment, Parks and Recreation), Court Appointed Special Advocates of Monmouth County (“CASA”) (Children and Families), St. Mark’s Center for Community Renewal (Health and Wellness), and Senior Citizens Activities Network Inc. (“SCAN”) (Education). “It was a very rigorous selection process,’’ said Rowena Crawford-Phillips, Impact Grants Chair. “More than 70 Impact members volunteered their time in evaluating the 61 compelling proposals submitted, conducting site visits and selecting the finalists. We are in awe of their dedication and commitment and are so proud to present these five outstanding finalists to our entire membership for their vote.”

During this difficult time, as an Executor or Personal Administrator, you’ll need the advice of a Certified Probate Real Estate Specialist (CPRES). Frank’s patience, wisdom, and experience will help reduce stress and guide you throughout the process of disposition of real and personal property for your loved one’s estate.

The organization’s Annual General Meeting will take place on November 19th at Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. Sponsored by OceanFirst Foundation, New Jersey Natural Gas, Stillwell-Hansen, and Bayshore Recycling, 440 Impact members and guests will gather to hear the finalists’ presentations. Members will then vote to select the four grant recipients. For more information, visit impact100jerseycoast.org.

Parker Family Health Center Raises $115,000 at Annual Gala

1

BY S U S A N M U R P H Y

PARKER FAMILY HEALTH CENTER (PFHC) celebrated with its fourth annual Gala on September 14 at the Navesink Country Club with more than 140 attendees raising $115,000.To express their deep appreciation, the Parker Family Health Center selected three honorees for this year’s Gala – Jeremy Grunin, Dr. Ken Grossman, and the Docs of Rock. “Choosing our Gala honorees is never an easy decision. As in past years, this year’s honorees have touched our hearts in special ways,” said Gina Petillo, PFHC Board Co-Chair. Jeremy Grunin, President of Grunin Holdings and the Grunin Foundation, provides major support for nonprofit organizations throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. This year, in partnership with Support Center and Center for Non-Profits, the Grunin Foundation sponsored the “Catapult Your Capacity” series, four compelling training sessions designed to help non-profit organizations achieve a new level of business acumen. Dr. Ken Grossman is a noted dermatologist, responsible for raising more than $50,000. “Dr. Ken Grossman is like a blue chip stock. He pays a regular dividend in the form of his professional expertise, volunteers, and, as an extra bonus, pays a special dividend by encouraging donations to the Parker Center, ” said Eugene Cheslock, Founder and Past President of PFHC.

The third honoree, the Docs of Rock, is a talented band of doctors by day and musicians by night. This band donates its exceptional musical skills in support of non-profit organizations and has already helped raise more than a million dollars since they first banded together in 2014. The Parker Family Health Center will mark its 20th anniversary in 2020. It is one of 89 clinics in the United States that follows the VIM model, which consists of volunteers in medicine who provide free healthcare to the uninsured and medically underserved. Without the support of friends, the center could not survive, as it is funded solely through events, grants, and individual donations. Unlike other clinics in the area, Parker Family Health Center offers totally free care, and only for patients without insurance.

Red Bank Classic 5K Donates $20,000 to Support Swim Safety & After-School Enrichment for Borough Youth

Representatives from the Red Bank Business Alliance and Red Bank RiverCenter, organizers of the Red Bank Classic charity run, recently presented checks of $10,000 each to both the Red Bank Department of Parks and Recreation and Red Bank Family YMCA to support programs that foster youth development. “The Red Bank Classic 5K is proud to provide $20,000 to give Red Bank youth access to a water safety program and a variety of creative and academic activities during critical out-of-school times,” said Angela Courtney, of the Red Bank Business Alliance and owner of Sweetest Sin Boutique on White Street. Director of Parks and Recreation Charlie Hoffmann said the donation from the Red Bank Classic will support after-school activities and evening workshops for children “to learn and enjoy exciting subject matter in a hands-on atmosphere.” The free and low-cost activities range from creative writing and art to sports broadcasting and fashion. The donation to the Y will support the Third Grade Swim Program, which takes place in late spring at the Red Bank Family YMCA, a branch of the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. President and CEO Laurie Goganzer explained that all third graders at Red Bank Primary and Red Bank Charter schools will participate in a water safety seminar and take four swim lessons at the Y to develop life-saving swim skills. “Keeping children safe in and around water is one of the Y’s highest priorities,” Goganzer said. “We are thankful for the support from the Red Bank Classic to provide invaluable water safety and swim lessons to all third graders in Red Bank.” “The second installment of the Red Bank Classic, which took place on June 15, was a great success with more than 1,500 runners, 80 businesses, 15 sponsors and 60 volunteers,” said James Scavone, executive director of RiverCenter, which manages the borough of Red Bank’s Special Improvement District. “The 5K brought the Red Bank community together for a day of good health that will have long-lasting benefits for the children of Red Bank,” Scavone said. The third Red Bank Classic 5K will take place on June 20, 2020. Early registration is open now and be available online at redbankclassic.com.

Why one family chose to preserve their farm in Colts Neck Claire de Groot remembers moving to the farm on Route 34 in Colts Neck in 1936 when she was six years old. At that time there was farmland as far as the eye could see. “I have so many cherished memories from this land,” Claire remembers. “We used to go ice skating in the pond, that was back when ponds still froze,” and “at one time I actually had a pet skunk,” Claire chuckles as she fondly recalls.

Claire de Groot moved to the approximately 60-acre farm with “We are so happy that the de Groot family chose to preserve their her family 83 years ago when Colts Neck was a sleepy, rural town farm,” explained Holly Boylan-Flego, President of the MCF Board where practically everyone knew each other. It was always like a little slice of heaven to us,” Claire explained. “We knew that we could never allow this beautiful land that holds so many cherished family memories to become covered with houses.” Throughout the past 83 years Colts Neck transformed from a rural farm town to a desired, residential estate community. Although the area still retains much of its rural character, thousands of homes have been built and thousands of acres of natural land have been lost forever. However, Claire can now rest assured that her family farm will never be developed. “We knew we wanted to see the land preserved,” explained Claire, who made the decision to preserve their family farm, not once, but twice. First, when the family preserved 20 acres in 2005 and now the remaining 40 acres, forever uniting the 60 acres as their family farm, forever. “Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF)

Andy Kaiser Investing Himself in Educating Children and Professionals

By Cathy Padilla | Photo Carmela Caracappa

My barn, my rules. Almost hidden from view by the curtains “We had to buy it,” said Andy in his open and welcoming way. dressing a nearby window, these words are faintly inscribed “My wife, Lauren, was upset with me for about a year, but on a small, red sign that hangs behind Andy Kaiser’s desk in then it all worked out.” And it has worked out very well. The the second story office of his barn. It’s a normal barn, mostly, school has been redone and expanded, modernized, and enjoys outfitted on the first floor with tractors and hay bales, goats, full enrollment with a waiting list for new students. Mountain sheep, and even a pony. But it also houses miniature furniture Hill Investment Partners is growing and poised for even more designed for multiple small children and an office on the second success with a laser-focus on 401k investments. And the Kaisers floor that contains a Bloomberg Terminal and a company that have a beautiful log-cabin dream home they custom built in a handles multiple million-dollar accounts for its clients. Welcome town they adore. But the “had to” in Andy’s comment is where to Mountain Hill Investment Partners, Mountain Hill School, the story begins. and the Andrew and Lauren Kaiser 12-acre farm in the hills of Atlantic Highlands. What prompts a wildly successful, suit-wearing Wall Street guy originally from Long Island with absolutely no background A prominent and successful Wall Street investment advisor that in education to trade his work life in for mowing the lawn and worked for both Dillon Reed and UBS, Andy traded in his long feeding the goats on a farm that comes with a preschool? is found as you enter the Mountain Hill School and look to the welcome mat displaying its logo. “The logo is our three children, that’s Jack and Jamie and their big brother Ryan in the middle,” said Andy pointing. “Ryan has a red heart, for heart disease. Most people think the heart means love, and that’s okay too. But Ryan died from heart disease, so we gave him a red heart.” The Kaisers lost their son when he was six years old, a former student of the original Mountain Hill School. A year after their loss, the school went up for sale. Andy insists had they not purchased the property a developer would have come in and turned it into a neighborhood, and he didn’t want to see that happen. And perhaps that’s true. But instead of another farm gone the way of so-called progress, Ryan’s parents have created a unique and subtle legacy and two successful businesses. Lauren is perpetually surrounded by bright and loving five-yearold’s who benefit from her attention and a specialized pre-school and kindergarten curriculum that incorporates life on a farm. Andy has found a way to bring Wall Street to Monmouth County and the chance to work steps away from his family and animals on a farm for which he personally caretakes.

portfolios for individuals and families, but he has taken that and expanded it from just those who can afford to hire him, to almost anyone who has a full-time job. As the complicated world of retirement changes and investing for a future that may no longer include a pension becomes more a reality than not for most, HR managers are no longer equipped to handle employee needs when it comes to their 401ks. “I wouldn’t have my lawyer do my taxes, and I wouldn’t have my accountant represent me in court,” said Andy. “It’s important to have the right person advise on the right topic. In the corporate 401k advisory space, we are great at educating and encouraging employees to use their plan to improve their retirement outcomes. We help companies control risk and drive down costs in the 401k plan to keep them ERISA compliant, and we spend considerable time with Corporate CEO/CFO types ensuring they are providing the best plan to their employees. But we also work with each employee, individually, as part of our service.” By offering his guidance across the spectrum to his corporate clients, whether working with the CFO or the new hire just out of college swimming in student loan debt, Andy is using his approachable and articulate style to simplify complicated and often scary financial decisions for the masses. Exuberant in his excitement for what comes next for his company, and all the people they will be able to help, Andy seizes every moment.

“This could have gone the other way,” explained Andy as his voice cracked ever so slightly. “A lot of people don’t survive losing a child. They get divorced, or self-medicate, or they just don’t make it out the other side. When someone dies, if you “Carpe Diem,” said Andy of his favorite quote. “When I stopped don’t do something to remember them, they’re just dead. DO YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO AVOID DENTAL TREATMENT BECAUSE OF SERIOUS OBSTACLES? • Fear and anxiety

• ADD/ADHD

• Difficulty Getting numb

• Alzheimer’s disease

• Down Syndrome or other developmental disabilities

• Acute gag reflex

• Parkinson’ disease, cerebral Palsy or other conditions that cause involuntary shaking • Autism, autism-spectrum disorders

• Dental phobias of all kinds • Inability to communicate or to understand and follow simple instructions

• The need for extensive treatment or restoration that might take many appointments and cause undue stress and anxiety

A significant part of our practice involves treating patients with special needs. This includes people who are extremely anxious and phobic. Individuals with mental and physical challenges, such as neurological disorders like Parkinson’s or epilepsy, can experience tremors or seizures. Individuals on the autism spectrum, or those with Down Syndrome, may not understand the dentist means to help and to take care of them. Sedation helps to calm their fears and give them an easier and more comfortable experience. Similarly, with Alzheimer’s and dementia, decreased reasoning capacity can keep the patient from cooperating. When the patient is asleep, the dentist can do the work that the patient needs.

Monmouth County SPCA Raises $250,000 at Fur Ball Gala The Monmouth County SPCA held its 2019 Fur Ball Gala on September 28 at the Blu Grotto in Oceanport. The event raised more than $250,000 for the Monmouth County SPCA’s homeless animals and community programs.

Event Co-Chair and MCSPCA Board of Trustee Member Fran Turner, MCSPCA Board of Trustee Secretary Andrew Grossman, John Hall, Allison Grossman and Kristen Hall

The honorees this year, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden & Freeholder Director Tom Arnone, were applauded for their support to the MCSPCA and its programs by providing fully funded, shared services for Law Enforcement and state-of-the-art shelter technology. The support of Sheriff Golden and Freeholder Arnone has allowed the MCSPCA to serve both residents and animals throughout Monmouth County. Honorees were also presented with resolutions from Senator Vin Gopal and a commendation letter from Senator Cory Booker, thanking them for their commitment to the Monmouth County SPCA and animals in Monmouth County. The year’s “Rat Pack in Vegas” theme, with the tagline “Top Dogs and Leaders of the Pack,” created an ambiance of glitz and glamour with guests dressed in 1950’s attire, gentlemen in fedoras, a real Vegas-style prize wheel, and larger than life desert palms nestled in every corner. The sounds of Sinatra channeled through cocktail hour crooner, Tony Corrao, and set the mood for a fabulous evening that continued on with the upbeat tunes of Guilty Pleasure. The highlights of the evening were the adorable dogs and puppies, dressed in their corsages and bow ties, who were escorted around the venue by MCSPCA staff and volunteers. Many of the dogs present were recently adopted and there to represent “success stories” highlighted in the evening’s program; others were either adopted that night or the following day at the shelter. This event would not have been possible without Top Dog Sponsor, The Hesse Companies, along with Leaders of the Pack Sponsor, Fran and Paul Turner. The event was co-chaired by Fran Turner and County Clerk, Christine Giordano Hanlon, Esq. “Our honorees this year, Sheriff Golden and Freeholder Arnone, are the quintessential fabric of what makes Monmouth County the best place to live and work in the State of New Jersey,” said Monmouth County SPCA Executive Director & Chief of Humane Law Enforcement Ross Licitra. “Our partnership with county government has allowed the Monmouth County SPCA to serve our community with a level of professionalism that our residents truly deserve when it comes to protecting and advocating for our animals. I cannot thank both our honorees enough for their past and continuing support of this great organization.” For more information, visit monmouthcountyspca.org.

DI VORCE TA LK

BY PET ER C . PA R A S , ESQ.

Holiday Spirit Remember how excited you got as a child as the holidays approached? The anticipation built up and the sheer joy increased soon after Halloween. Thanksgiving was in sight and that was just the warm up for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and Festivus (for you Seinfeld fans out there). Friends, parties, presents, and family were all part of the excitement. Remember the feelings you had as a kid? That’s how your children feel. That’s how they are entitled to feel. Your divorce (although it certainly affects them) is not their divorce. They still have two parents whose job is to insulate them from the strife divorce brings to the adults. No matter the level of animosity, whether palpable or subtle, between divorcing spouses, the children didn’t cause it and the children shouldn’t suffer from it. Children of divorce are no less entitled to holiday happiness than children in intact families. So put aside your anger at your spouse, if even temporarily, and let your children enjoy the holiday season as stress-free as possible. Now is the time to make plans, to adjust your plans, and to be flexible so that the children can spend time with both parents and their extended families during the holidays.

Peter C. Paras

is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C.

What’s in it for you? If you’re flexible now, the chances may increase that your spouse (or ex-spouse) will be flexible in the future when you make a request. You will also get the satisfaction only a parent can know by doing what’s right for your child. And, oh yes, you’re likely to have a happier child. Children naturally love their parents. When they don’t, it is usually because they have been taught not to. Sometimes a parent’s own actions are the cause. Just as often it is the other parent’s actions that create or exacerbate a rift. The holiday season is a special time for most children, whether celebrated religiously or secularly. Give your children the best gift of all – a time to enjoy both parents and their families without the stress and guilt divorcing parents all too often instill in them. If parents, together, prioritize their children’s needs above their own, they can ensure that the holiday season is, indeed, the most wonderful time of the year. R+FH KINDNESS WEEK A SUCCESS

THIS PAST MONTH, Think Kindness founder Brian Williams spoke at all five public schools in Rumson and Fair Haven, involving the greater community in what he called the most mind-blowing example of community and school integration to embrace kindness he’s ever seen. An impactful presenter, he had students chanting in unison how they can “change the world”, while many of the more than 200 parents and community members who came to listen to Williams speak at Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School on October 7 left in tears. The reach of the week-long push spread beyond the schools. More than 100 businesses fully embraced R+FH Kindness Week, hanging Kindness Week and Kindness Counts banners and posters

and giant KIND signs colored by school children in the two towns. Yard signs were everywhere, while many businesses took the Kindness initiative and came up with their own creative ideas. One bakery made Kindness Counts cookies, while a framing store displayed giant framed kindness sayings on its front lawn. Even the folks at Fair Haven Borough Hall got involved by taking freshly baked muffins to their friends at Rumson Borough Hall. Williams had students send text messages to their moms telling them how beautiful they looked that day and he taught the elementary school kids how to be Kindness Ninjas. Kindness Ninjas commit secret acts of kindness, like leaving notes in people’s backpacks or on a teacher’s desk. He also taught them to

expand out into the community with random acts, such as leaving donuts on a front porch. He talked to students about how kindness takes bravery and that all world changers learned to do scary things. He shared how being kind can be uncomfortable, sitting with someone lonely at lunch or inviting someone new to come play. Williams also challenged the schools to document 5,000 acts of kindness in the following 15 days and to keep the Kindness going. Educators and students from schools in both towns shared it was the best assembly they ever witnessed and that it has energized, captivated, and inspired them all.

Adult volunteers manned different stations, representing many of the agencies that our families have to encounter when experiencing homelessness, such as Monmouth County Social Services, the Division of Motor Vehicles, Child Care Resources, Vital Statistics, Family Promise, and others. “We intentionally designed the activities to empower youth to think critically about budgeting, education/employment, service delivery, complex barriers and ultimately---survival. It was affirming to see youth from different schools, backgrounds, and communities work together to overcome barriers [especially] from the perspective of a family experiencing homelessness,” said Christine Love, executive director, and visionary for the project. Participants heard first-hand testimony from a family that was hopeless and on the brink of despair before coming to Family Promise of Monmouth County. Aniyah W. and her fiance Nicolas P. captivated the audience with their story of resilience, the im-

portance of healthy d e c i s i o n - m a k i ng , and the value of education, family, and community supports. Rumson-Fair Haven student and Youth Advisory Council member, Brooke Bosonac stated, “We were moved by Nick Left to right: Senator Vin Gopal, Jessica Stepanski Deand Aniyah’s speech. velopment Chair President, Christine Love, Executive Director, Family Promise of Monmouth County. After reflecting on the event, my friends and I began to brainstorm how we can continue to engage young people to help end homelessness.” In fact, youth from Howell High School were so moved that they have initiated a Howell HS Family Promise Student Club. Youth from across the County are joining this growing movement to end child & family homelessness in their respective communities. New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal (D-11) walked the grounds of Cardboard Box City, speaking one-on-one with parents, youth and volunteers. “Family Promise of Monmouth County does absolutely outstanding work to support local families in need of housing and to help them get back on their feet,” Senator Gopal said. “Events like the Cardboard Box City Sleep-Out not only raise essential funds that go toward services for families in need, they also raise awareness of the challenges of homelessness and the harsh realities that people without housing face every day. I’m proud to support Family Promise of Monmouth County, and look forward to seeing the good that they continue to accomplish in the future.”

Fair Haven Dedicates New Park on Historic Home Site The Borough of Fair Haven officially opened its newest park on October 15, located at the end of De Normandie Avenue and overlooking the Navesink River. The park encompasses 0.6 acre of land, and is one of 10 parks and open spaces in the Borough. The site was originally purchased in 2015 for $1.2 million with a combination of funding and support from NJDEP Green Acres/Blue Acres Grant - $655,000; Monmouth County Open Space Trust Fund Grant - $250,000; and Monmouth Conservation Foundation - $150,000. The remaining balance of the funding was provided by capital funds from the Borough of Fair Haven. Among officials participating in the ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate Williams, Albert, and Robards Park were Borough of Fair Haven Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli, Monmouth County Freeholders Gerry Scharfenberger and Susan Kiley, and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso. The picturesque park once was the site of a home built in 1853 by Charles Williams, a free black man. A plaque at the entrance to the

park recounts the site’s history. Land for the home was a wedding gift from the owner of the Rohallion Estates to Williams and his wife, Julia; Williams maintained the estate’s horses. Charles and Julie Williams lived in the home for the rest of their lives. Their descendants – the Williams, Albert, and Robards families – also used the house as a home and gathering place. The home was updated in the 1950s, although the historic structure was left intact. Throughout their ownership, the family always allowed the public to use the beach on the property. These words inscribed on the plaque highlight this generosity: “It is in that spirit for which this land is preserved and protected to allow free and open access to the beautiful Navesink River for all time.” Lucarelli said Williams, Albert, and Robards Park is a “passive park that allows for folks to relax and enjoy the magnificent views of the Navesink River.” Lucarelli also noted that there are four stone benches overlooking the river, beside a quarry dust trail.

L to R: Borough of Fair Haven Special Projects Manager DJ Breckenridge, Borough Administrator Theresa Casagrande, Councilwoman Betsy Koch, Councilman Chris Rodriguez, Councilwoman Susan Sorensen, Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger, Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli, Freeholder Susan Kiley, Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso, and Councilwoman Jacqui Rice.

The sign for Williams, Albert, and Robards Park stands above the plaque that recounts the site’s history.

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow Kevin Smith debuts new film in Asbury Park’s Paramount Theater On October 19, Kevin Smith, joined by longtime friend and actor Jason Mewes, kicked off a nationwide series of one-nightonly shows of Smith’s latest film, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. The “roadshow” was originally slated to open at the Music Box Theater in Chicago, but Smith proudly told the audience that “he couldn’t have debuted anywhere else but in New Jersey”. Smith also mentioned during the introduction that Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is partly a sequel to many of his films including: Mallrats, Clerks 2, and even Dogma as he thought it would be the final film in his “View Askewniverse”. However, due to the film’s positive reception from executives at Universal, Smith proudly announced he would be now be making Mallrats 2, in addition to Clerks 3.

Carson T. Smith Named Head of The Rumson Country Day School Following a comprehensive, eight-month search process, which culminated in a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees, The Rumson Country Day School is pleased to announce Carson T. Smith as its ninth Head of School, effective July 1, 2020. “Our community is thrilled to welcome Carson Smith as we embrace the next chapter in RCDS’s 94-year history. We are confident that he will lead the school with wisdom and passion to ensure its continued growth and success.” Carson, who holds a master’s degree in Social Studies Education from Columbia University and a B.A. from Connecticut College, will be joining RCDS from Thayer Academy, a coed day school of 700 students in grades 5-12 in Braintree, Massachusetts, where he has been Middle School Director for the past ten years, as well as a history teacher and coach. Previously Carson served as Dean of Students, history teacher and coach at The Derryfield School, and as a math teacher, department chair, and coach at Cardigan Mountain School. “The Rumson Country Day School is a special place, guided by people who care deeply about the school and its students,” said Carson. “The school’s emphasis on tradition, the arts, athletics and service combined with its commitment to character development, individual and social responsibility, civic awareness, and leadership creates an exceptional learning environment. RCDS has every element of what I believe makes for a truly great school, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to lead a school that understands itself so well.” A lifelong learner, Carson is currently a Doctor of Education candidate in Educational Policy and Leadership at Vanderbilt University. Over the course of his career, he has worked on numerous administrative and board-level committees, such as strategic planning, budget management, admissions, branding and marketing, summer programs, and development. His sense of volunteerism is reflected in his serving on a public school board, coaching local youth sports teams, and volunteering with an organization that promotes self-sufficiency, through physical fitness, in people experiencing homelessness.
