Sprawling Duplex Homes Now Available Beach houses foster a sense of well-being which is why so many people choose to build their homes near the water. The benefits of living by the sea are what inspired New Jersey developers Mimi and Edwin Feliciano to create South Beach at Long Branch. The award-winning oceanfront complex combines stunning modern design with maintenance-free living. “We’re finding that buyers are especially intrigued by the three sprawling duplexes in the North Tower which are really special,” noted James. “The duplexes can be amazing beach retreats because of the large amount of interior and exterior space as well as their unique, two-story layouts.” The four-bedroom, five-bath duplexes feature exceptional details and luxurious appointments, ranging in price from $2.9 to $3.1 million. With unobstructed northern coastal views, the duplexes are bright and airy with two separate floors, ranging from 3,027 to 3,309 square feet of interior space and another 1,000 square feet of exterior space. The open concept layouts on the upper floors focus on a large master bedroom suite with walk-in closet and adjacent lounge area with a great room and designer kitchen leading to an outdoor terrace. The lower floors consist of three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a lounge area and an outdoor courtyard and patio designed with a plunge pool or hot tub. “In addition to the three sprawling, one-ofa-kind penthouses,” said James, “two duplex penthouses occupy the 7th and 8th floors of the South Tower and the third and largest penthouse sits atop the North Tower.” Call to schedule a private tour 732.222.0710 sales center or 732.842.1130 brokerage office SouthBeachatLongBranch.com Sotheby’s International Realty and the Sotheby’s International Realty logo are registered (or unregistered) service marks used with permission. WITH NEARLY 80 YEARS of combined experience in the alteration and construction industry, this couple brings both of their expertise and lovable natures to the business, Builders Architectural Millwork Inc. in Shrewsbury. Anita DelPesce and Bob Montesano have lived in Monmouth County for the past 35 plus years in three different homes, one in Lincroft and two in Colts Neck. “Our roots are here in Monmouth County and our homes were all less than 10 miles from each other,” said Anita. “It’s needless to say we like the area, the community, and the people here.” Anita founded the business in 2006 after having been involved in the building of more than 1000 homes as an independent developer. Bob decided to add in his talent and 42 years of experience in high rise construction and renovation, and together they have built a company that furnishes building products.

our homes were all less than 10 miles from each other...It’s needless to say we like the area, the community, and the people here,” said Anita.

CM: Do you have children or pets? BOB: We have both pets and children, the problem with pets is when you let them out they run away. The problem with children is when you let them out they always come back. Just kidding we love them all… even our children. CM: What sets you apart from others doing what you do?

CM: What is the most rewarding part of your career? BOB: Pleasing our customers. Nothing is as important to our team as seeing the happy face of a wellserved client. We strive to exceed expectations. Borough of Sea Bright Developing Shrewsbury Riverfront Park

By Susan Murphy One acre of land at the foot of the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge on Ocean Avenue located directly across from the Anchorage Public Beach is being transformed into a unique public park. The future home of the Shrewsbury Riverfront Park will be at the site of the former Anchorage Apartments, which were destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. “The State Department of Environmental Protection offered to buy the property after the building was destroyed during Superstorm Sandy. This would be a Green Acres Purchase that would require the Borough to develop and manage the property,” explained Administrative Assistant of Special Projects Frank Lawrence. Monmouth Conservation Foundation Executive Director William D. Kastning further commented, “The Borough of Sea Bright entered into a long-term lease with the state which enabled the borough to make plans to create a passive park. To fund the first phase of the park, the borough applied for a grant from the Monmouth County Open Space Grant program. To use the county funds, the borough had to match the county provided funds. As part of the effort to raise the match, three homeowners residing in Rumson provided funding to Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF) for the park improvements. Their donations were contingent upon the borough and the donors agreeing on the park improvements such that they did not interfere with their view of the shore. MCF held the money and then transferred it to the borough to complete phase 1 of the project. Phase 1 allowed for paths, fencing, a paver area upon which a gazebo could be placed, a flagpole, and a few other amenities. In order to complete the park, the cost will be $160,000. The Borough has submitted an application for an $80,000 grant from the county. MCF has initiated an appeal to raise the match. Kastning noted that letters and email messages were sent to residents of Sea Bright, Rumson, Monmouth Beach and Oceanport and the appeal is ongoing. “As of today, we have raised over $15,000. Three four by eight-foot signs were placed on the park illustrating what the completed park would look like, and how a passerby could provide a donation.” After Phase 2 is done the park will be complete, but there are some concerns. “This may be impacted by the Rumson/Sea Bright bridge replacement currently planned to

12

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

begin in 2021. Upon completion of the new bridge, the park will be increased in size somewhat, i.e., the current approach lanes will be abandoned, and that area will be added to the park,” said Kastning. Donations to the park can be made several ways. Those who received the mailed letters or email messages can respond by sending a check or providing credit card information online at monmouthconservation.org/shrewsbury. A passerby can scan the QR code with a Smartphone. Donations to Monmouth Conservation Foundation can be made online at monmouthconservation.org. Lawrence noted that personalized park benches can be purchased, as another way of donating to help in the development of the park. “Although Sea Bright is blessed with a long shoreline and beautiful beach, the borough does not have a significant park within walkable and bikeable distance. This park, when completed will provide a peaceful respite for the casual passersby where they can enjoy the fresh air and pleasant views of the Shrewsbury River,” said Kastning. “Eight years after our town was devastated by Superstorm Sandy, we have rebuilt our infrastructure, our businesses are back and our residents have returned to their homes that are elevated and more resilient to future flood events. Completion of the Park is one more important milestone as we build a better Sea Bright for the future,” commented Sea Bright Mayor Brian Kelly.

Beyond the Brand | College Connoisseur Meet Cathy S. Davis, Independent College Counselor BY LI LI A N N PA R A S

The college admissions process can be very stressful in “normal times. Now, the pandemic has added layers of new issues and strategies as colleges change their requirements and methods, and students weigh their best options. Meet Cathy Davis, a former high school guidance counselor, guiding families for more than 25 years. She understands the students, the process, and as importantly, has built relationships with many admission departments. CM: What is involved in college counseling? Cathy Davis (CD): My services are comprehensive- including, but not limited to, resume writing, determining realistic college choices, ACT vs SATs, extracurricular activities, selecting essay topics that highlight the students accomplishments and future goals, and filling out the college applications. Both students and their parents are the beneficiaries of my counseling service. With my expertise and over 25 years of college counseling experience, I am able to help students successfully navigate the often daunting college admission process.

14

CM: How has the pandemic changed the application process? CD: With the advent of the pandemic, colleges have begun to look at their past criteria for selection, and have made modifications. New questions have become the norm: Should I take a gap year? Will my courses be virtual? Should I go to a community college for my first year? If colleges no longer require standardized tests should I take them anyway? Because each college has set individual standards, it is important that I contact individual admission counselors as well as attend webinars to obtain the answers. As a college advisor I do this without hesitation so that my students know what will be required of them. CM: How are you different from other counseling advisors? CD: As a former high school guidance counselor, I have obtained a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the information and qualifications college admission counselors are seeking. My

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

extensive communication with college admission personnel is definitely a plus. As a guidance professional, beginning in tenth grade, I help students choose a project that is not only beneficial to them, but also to their community and to the admission process. I make sure the student has all the criteria needed when it comes time for the application process. I work individually with all my clients, both virtually and one-to-one. As a guidance professional, I can help them choose a high school path that optimizes their future success. CM: Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy? CD: I am a great believer that each student should reach for the stars. But in doing so, he or she must also have realistic choices and project these qualities on their applications. Through this process every student should be able to shine. It is my job to help them recognize their potential, highlight their qualifications and demonstrate confidence in their choices.

Navigating the College Admissions Process I’M H ER E TO H ELP: Select the “right” colleges to meet each student’s needs

Determine the extra-curricular activities necessary to become competitive

Facilitate the essay writing process

Answer questions relating to ACT and SAT preparation

As a former high school guidance counselor, my expertise, inside knowledge, and more than 25 years of experience has helped hundreds of students successfully achieve their college goals (which in college lingo means most get accepted to their first choice).

In-person and virtual sessions are available. Because of the time I devote to each student, my clientele is limited.

Rumson Education Foundation Sold Out Annual Golf Classic By Susan Murphy Rumson Education Foundation (REF) held its annual Golf Classic on October 8 at the Navesink Country Club. REF Board President Tom Collard noted that 92 golf participants attended the event, which was sold out. Golf participants were able to sign up as foursomes or individual golfers. Tickets were also available for non-golfers for the second part of the event which included a reception, buffet dinner with stations, and an auction. The dinner and auction were held outside under a large tent with at least two sides open to comply with COVID-19 rules. Members of the golf committee included Gail Tobias, Curran Scoble, Carey Delia, and Mike McEvilly. A putting contest was held early in the day and was won in a tie by Michael McEvilly and Chris Miller. There were 27 auction items donated by members of the community and local businesses. Some of this year’s top auction items included Golf rounds: Winged Foot and Deepdale donated by Craig Hetherington of Notorious Pink Wine; Baltusrol donated by Michael McEvilly; Golfboard Golf Caddy Scooter from Thomas DeAngelis; Family Boating and Fishing trips from Tom Collard and Richie Fragiacomo; and a Dance Party from LB Kass. “This was the REF’s third annual golf classic event. Funds raised from this event will be used to award future grants. The REF’s grant cycle begins in January each year. Students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members are able to apply for funding for indispensable school resources that would not otherwise be possible due to school budgetary constraints. Parents Praise Top Private Academy as School Re-Opens Amidst Pandemic

All staff and students are subject to a daily temperature check and health screening.

Home Away From Home Academy, a private school located on the border of Aberdeen and Holmdel for over 30 years, opened its doors on September 8, 2020 for five full day in-person learning amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Recently re-accredited by the Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools, this private academy spent months planning and preparing all of the health and safety protocols according to guidelines set forth by the Office of Licensing and the Department of Health. All of the plans were put in place to ensure the safest and most successful school year possible during these unprecedented times. “We are very grateful for the health and well-being of our school community at this moment in time. We are hopeful for continued success for the entire school year. Although the financial burdens of re-opening the school are paramount and can be overwhelming, we accomplish all of our goals by taking into consideration the families, children, and staff members as our highest priority”, says Carmine Visone, co-owner of HAFHA.

School Protocols

In accordance with the Office of Licensing, the Academy has initiated the following protocols: • Pre-screening questionnaire prior to admittance into school • A complete COVID-19 plan submitted to parents prior to admission

18

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

• Daily temperature check and health screening upon drop-off •No parents, guests, or vendors permitted into the building • Limited class sizes • Top of the line cleaning products and PPE readily available to staff • Mask-wearing staff members • Constant disinfecting and handwashing all throughout the day • Individualized supplies and learning areas • Outdoor learning center for elementary students • Staff professional development training related to COVID-19 procedures The implementation of these procedures, in addition to others, was a necessary step to mitigate risk, and more importantly, for the reassurance and comfort of families who need a reliable and safe school for their children. Parents and staff alike are very pleased with all of the procedures in place, and how well the school has functioned thus far. “As an educator and parent, I am so impressed with Home Away From Home Academy’s reopening plan and the steps they have taken to ensure my children’s educational and social/ emotional well-being and growth. Children’s health and safety is at the forefront, supported by a dedicated, loving and caring staff, and it gives me so much confidence and peace of mind in

knowing I made the best decision for my boys”, says Kristina Leach, HAFHA mom and employee of the Matawan Aberdeen Regional School District.

Limited Spaces Available

With the recent guideline update from the Office of Licensing on September 21, 2020 allowing 15 children per class, from the prior guideline of 10 children per class, the Academy is now accepting very limited registrations for certain age groups. All new families will be subject to a pre-screening prior to admittance into the school, and informed on all of the above policies and procedures. The establishment of this framework and process could not be done alone; the Academy is fortunate enough to have staff and families who help and support bringing the school back to a safe, healthy, and happy place for all of the children.

desk outside, teachers followed every safety protocol, including taking our kids’ temperature and a health screening. They also cared so much about the children’s anxiety and made all of the staff available outside, with masks, to escort the kids into the school. All of those measures continue to occur each morning, and classes are even held outside which the children love. When I pick up at the end of the day, I can see desks through the window that are protected with clear partitions and adorable racing car designs to put the kids at ease and ensure every safety measure is met. I have absolutely no anxiety sending my kids to Home Away From Home Academy, which is saying a lot in this environment.”

For more information on the Academy, or to schedule a virtual tour, please call 732.290.0033 or visit www.HomeAwayFromHomeAcademy.com.

Co-Owner and Director of the Academy, Phyllis Visone explains, “The entire school community working together as one family with complete honesty, respect, patience, and vigilance achieves the goal of a positive learning experience for children during this time.”

A Mom’s Heartfelt Summary

It can be summed up best by a Mom of two children at HAFHA, Shannon Sydlowski, “In a time where almost every interaction produces high anxiety, it is so wonderful and refreshing to bring our children back to a school where literally every effort has been made to alleviate our anxiety and keep our children safe. United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties Distributes $70,000 in Grants From COVID-19 Recovery Fund to 11 Local Organizations

United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (UWMOC) presents Monmouth Day Care Center (MDCC) with a $5,000 grant from the UWMOC COVID-19 Recovery Fund to help safely reopen the facility. Pictured from left to right: UWMOC Board Chairman Bob Rosone, UWMOC President & CEO Lori-Anne McLane, MDCC Executive Director Heidi Zaentz, MDCC Development Director Christina Caccamo, UWMOC Volunteer Brian Massey, Grunin Foundation Executive Director Heather Barberi, and New Jersey Natural Gas Director of Customer and Community Relations Tom Hayes.

United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties (UWMOC) launched the UWMOC COVID-19 Recovery Fund in April 2020 to address the unmet needs of people and organizations economically impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks to generous donations from individuals, corporations and virtual fundraisers, United Way has distributed $70,000 to its partner organizations to aid in our community’s recovery from the pandemic. The first $20,000 in donations to the UWMOC COVID-19 Recovery Fund were graciously matched dollar for dollar by the Grunin Foundation and New Jersey Natural Gas. A competitive mini-grant process was opened to UWMOC’s current partners, through which a total of 11 organizations were chosen to receive funds. The first phase of grants totaling $45,000 for nine nonprofits will enable some to safely reopen, and also help approximately 475 individuals who have been financially impacted by COVID-19 with their basic needs. The recipients of the first phase of grants of $5,000 each are as follows: Affordable Housing Alliance, Mental Health Association of Monmouth County, Monmouth Day Care Center, O.C.E.A.N. Inc., Ocean County YMCA, Social Community Activities Network (SCAN), St. Francis Community Center, Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey, and YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. Monmouth Day Care Center (MDCC) in Red Bank is one of the organizations awarded a grant for crucial items in order to reopen in compliance with New Jersey’s COVID-19 standards. “A top priority at MDCC has always been the safety of our children, their families, and our staff,” said Heidi Zaentz, Executive Director of Monmouth Day Care Center. “During this pandemic it has become even more important, and UWMOC’s support made it possible for us to purchase much-needed supplies, including safety shields, PPE, disinfectants, and toys for individual children to use to avoid cross-contamination. We thank United Way for helping MDCC keep our families safe.” A second phase of grants totaling $25,000 will be distributed to the Toms River Regional School District and NJ 2-1-1. Holiday Express Virtual Clambake Raises $135,000

Beth and Tim McLoone, founder of Holiday Express.

The 13th annual Holiday Express Clambake, held virtually on September 13, raised $135,000 for the non-profit organization that delivers music, food, gifts, financial support, and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year. This year’s event included several Holiday Express memories including: a special performance from the Meadowlands Arena with Bruce Springsteen and Joe Piscopo, the Rockefeller Tree Lighting, and other memorable performances throughout the years. The virtual evening also featured recorded performances from Holiday Express volunteers, including Tim McLoone, Layonne Holmes, Carl Gentry, Pat Guadagno, Jim Celestino, Sheldon Edmond, Amy Broza, Nicole Cocco, and Gary Sfraga. A heart felt tribute to BethAnne Clayton, a long time Holiday Express volunteer who passed away from cancer earlier in the year, ended the evening. The event was a huge success thanks to many individuals who purchased tickets and to several generous sponsors of the evening, including presenting sponsors Phil and Marilyn Perricone, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and McLoone’s Restaurants. Hundreds of items donated by local families and businesses for a silent auction also contributed to the success of the Clambake. During the 2020 season, Holiday Express will provide a virtual party for 100 locations. Holiday Express “visits” the mentally and physically challenged, the isolated, individuals in addiction and recovery programs, the poor and the homeless and children with serious illnesses. Proceeds from the Clambake will be used to improve the quality of life for 27,000 individuals who have come to depend on Holiday Express. While these individuals will experience Holiday Express in a different manner, the organization is fully committed to providing holiday fun for all, including great holiday music and the dance party atmosphere that are unique to Holiday Express. Additionally, the men, women and children will all receive the customized duffle bag filled with essential personal items that are a signature part of the Holiday Express program. Covid and the Courts As you can imagine, the pandemic has impacted the Family Court as much as it has every other aspect of life. However, through the leadership of Chief Justice Rabner and Judge Grant, the Administrative Director of the Courts, the court system has been functioning reasonably well under the circumstances. Initially, judges and court staff were not permitted to be physically in the courthouse. Currently, no more than 25% of judges and staff are allowed in the courthouse at any given time. As a result, mail was not being processed promptly and efficiently. This led to the implementation of a new online system for filing documents in the Family Court. After numerous initial glitches were fixed and training programs for lawyers and their staffs on how to use the new system were given, e-filing of documents has become much smoother and more efficient. Most proceedings in the Family Peter C. Paras

Conferences with judges and lawyers and proceedings involving the judge, the lawyers, and the litigants have also gotten easier through experience with the technology. Motions are being argued and even divorce trials are being conducted remotely. Everyone appears on the computer screen. Witnesses are sworn and questioned, and even cross-examined. Documents that would often be introduced in court are circulated in advance so that the judge and both sides have them when questions are asked. With the exception of applications for domestic violence temporary restraining orders, virtually all other Family Court cases are being handled remotely. in person in the courthouse due to concerns that victims could be influenced, or even intimidated, by abusers not visible on the computer screen. By requiring in-person proceedings, some of these fears are eliminated. Presently, only lawyers, litigants, and witnesses who have a scheduled matter or an appointment are allowed in the courthouse. Everyone entering the courthouse must wear a face mask, is subject to a wellness check, and must social distance (at least six feet from others) while in the courthouse. Our courts have been adjusting to changing needs as the pandemic ebbs and flows in an effort to balance the public’s need to access the courts with the overriding need to ensure public safety. So far, under extreme circumstances, they’re doing pretty well.

Siobhan Fallon-Hogan Does a

Genre Hop

BY: LI LI A N N PA R A S | PHO TO : C A R M EL A C A R AC A PPA

Do you somehow have the feeling you recognize Siobhan Fallon-Hogan? Some will definitely know her as a fellow Rumson resident, but most will realize they “know her” from enjoying her acting and comedic work. Maybe you saw her in television comedies (Seinfeld, SNL, The Golden Girls, 30 Rock ...), or in humorous movie roles (Men In Black, Forrest Gump, New In Town, Holes...). Although often a supporting actor, her characters steal scenes. Who can forget her as Tina, Elaine’s roommate on Seinfeld? Blanche in New In Town? The bus driver, Dorothy Harris, in Forrest Gump? Or her ensemble work on SNL? What some may not realize is the broad range of Siobhan’s acting career. Siobhan recently used the new term “genre hop” to describe her friend Chris Rock’s crossover from stand-up to acting in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. This phrase so perfectly describes her career path too, although her own genre hop occurred many years before the term was in vogue. During the past twenty years, Siobhan has headed to Europe three different times to make dramatic Cannes Film Festival winning indie films with renowned Danish director Lars von Trier (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark, The House That Jack Built...), a departure from the comedic roles for which she had become known. Many good things followed. On a personal level, she developed a deep and enduring friendship with Lauren Bacall after they appeared together in Dogville. On a business level, it led to an important business collaboration with von Trier and this lesser known alliance perhaps has had the greatest impact on Siobhan’s newest endeavor, the creation of RUSHΣD, a film she wrote, stars in and co-produced. Siobhan had a strong feeling she would be returning to Denmark one day, and that her path would once again cross with that of von Trier. She was absolutely right. Siobhan recently penned RUSHΣD, an original film about a hazing tragedy at a fraternity and the resultant fallout to the family. So impressed was von Trier with the script, his company Zentropa signed on to co-produce. RUSHΣD ensued, with filming in Monmouth County and Upstate New York, followed by post- production in Denmark and France. (At the time of the interview RUSHΣD had been screened and was awaiting final distribution.) Siobhan is warm, funny, and firmly grounded, despite the pressures and many tasks involved in movie making. She revealed to CM the effect of this frenzied process with her usual humor, recounting that her favorite spare time activity these days is “blocking insane thoughts from racing through my head.” Enjoy her other thoughts about RUSHΣD, her career, and her Irish Catholic upbringing that helped shape her and her comedic sensibilities.

Meet your neighbor, Siobhan Fallon-Hogan. CM: You are truly a Monmouth County family. Siobhan Fallon-Hogan (SFH): Yes, I have lived in Rumson since 2004 with my husband Peter. We have a daughter, Bernadette, a political reporter for the NY Post, a son Peter, an actor, and a daughter Sinead, a sophomore at Virginia Tech. We have a dog Trudy-- who is famous in Rumson because she is an escape artist, and a cat, Mittens. CM: When did you first get the acting bug and what was your first memorable performance? SFH: I always loved to act and my first big role was in the third grade, as the last wheel of a train’s caboose because being a girl disqualified me to audition for the role of the conductor. I may sue my grammar school as soon as this is over if the statute of limitations hasn’t expired on that one. I did get a bad review from a sixth grader who said “Why was the last wheel going so much faster than the others. Wouldn’t the train derail?” CM: Did any person have a particular influence on your career, especially your comedy? SFH: My father, Bill Fallon, was the funniest man I have ever met. He was an attorney and a great storyteller and comedian. Both my parents were amazing. I also had the honor of working with greats like Lauren Bacall, Kirk Douglas, Betty White, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and many more-- and I learned from all of them. CM: Have you done standup comedy or stage work? SFH: I have never done standup. I did lots of stage work before my kids. I did Shakespeare in the Park and I have been a member of The Atlantic Theatre in New York for 25 years. CM: What was your most fun acting role? SFH: My most fun role was Blanche in New In Town with Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr. We had a riot. CM: If you could work with any other actor, who would you choose and why? SFH: I love Diane Wiest and Goldie Hawn. I still would love to work again with Shia LeBeouf whose mother I played in Holes. I think Shia is an amazing actor. I love Gary Sinise too. He is an American hero for all he has done for the vets and Wounded Warriors, and he is a superb actor. CM: Are there any crazy things that happened to you on a set? SFH: Yes, because I always brought my kids all over the world, to every set. So, there were always fist fights and shenanigans going on.

“I also had the honor of working with the greats like Lauren Bacall, Kirk Douglas, Betty White, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and many more…”

CM: It is interesting to see your career and interests evolve to the point where you have now written a full - length film. What inspired you to choose a fraternity hazing death as the topic in RUSHΣD and how did you incorporate some humor? SFH: The film is a drama/thriller, with humor, as the family is Irish Catholic and humor is a part of their core. I read about the many tragedies that have happened on college campuses and my heart breaks for the families. I wrote the script alone, and from the point of view of a mother of four kids with one in college. I have three kids around the same age as the characters. CM: What was the most satisfying part of this new venture, and what was the worst or unexpected part? SFH: The most satisfying part was the outpouring of support and involvement from the community. The worst part is no sleep, six huge trucks in your driveway, four port- a- potties on my lawn, and my house transformed into a frat house. Let’s just say my socks did not match most days -if I could even find a pair. continued on next page... CommunityMagazineNJ.com NOVEMBER 2020

CM: Where was RUSHΣD filmed and how long was the process? SFH: We filmed for 22 days and 20 of those were in Rumson and Middletown. The story is based in Upstate New York so on the last two days, we traveled to Cazenovia, my hometown. We wanted beautiful fall foliage shots here and in Upstate. We started filming September 30 and ended October 24, on a six-day work week. We had four months of intense prep, 22 days of filming six days a week, and we worked a minimum of 12 hours a day on set. Then after I got home, I would rewrite and prep for the next day. Post-production was grueling. The editing was in Bordeaux, France with award winning Sabine Emiliani who won a BAFTA for March of The Penguins. After France, I was supposed to go to Denmark for sound edit in March and the pandemic hit. Local musician Kyle Ward who had worked on the film with the sound engineer then stepped up and composed four songs for the film and we worked remotely from Kyle’s studio with our Danish composer, world renowned Kristian Eidnes Andersen. CM: Did your family participate in the film? SFH: Yes, my husband Peter co-produced the film. My son Peter is an actor and plays Vinny. My daughter Sinead plays Jessie, and Bernadette came home to play the reporter which was a stretch because she is…a reporter- ha. My niece Kristina Train’s song, We the People, is in the film. My nephew Liam played my son. My nephew Brandon was a frat boy and

niece Bella, a student. CM: You mentioned the community was also involved. SFH: This film was only made possible by the generosity and hard work of the people in this community. I am BEYOND GRATEFUL! Locals were involved in any and every way. All our locations were homes of Rumson or Middletown residents. The cast and crew were housed with different friends and families in town. Local actors Ellie Frankel, Michael Mulheren, Brian O’Halloran, Danny Roberto, Sara Sullivan, Andy Taffin and Brian Sheehy played significant roles. Phil Villipiano, the famous NFL football player from town, played the president of the University. We had more than 500 people from the community as extras. Chris and James Smith’s Val’s Tavern was also our production office. Kevin Feehan went above and beyond making delicious meals for the crew. So many area businesses and generous members of the community had a surprise or two of baked goods that Linda Corsi arranged. I even hit up my neighbor, Joe Lagrotteria, for his truck which he generously let us use and Robert Patrick drove! It is overwhelming how generous people were. Many many thanks to all! CM: A favorite quote, or philosophy? SFH: “Kids are no bargain.” Bill Fallon, 1979, after finding some roadies in the back of our station wagon.

SPTS Youth Council Hosts Sold Out Concert for a Cause

New Jersey based teen suicide prevention organization helps teens in the midst of COVID-19 The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (SPTS) Youth Council hosted its first ever drive-in concert Concert for a Cause. The event was supported by The Atlantic Highlands Recreation Committee in conjunction with SPTS and School of Rock – Red Bank. All proceeds from the event directly support the SPTS Youth Council. The Concert was held at the Atlantic Highlands Marina Parking Lot in Atlantic Highlands. The line-up included three New Jersey based high-school rock bands and the Red Bank School of Rock House Band. In between sets, members of the SPTS Youth Council spoke about the importance of opening up about mental health and reducing the stigma that comes along with it. “No one deserves to be another statistic. The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide has taught me that we all need to make a change,” shared Jessica Sweet, SPTS Youth Council member and Event Committee member. “Openly talking about mental health needs to be more common in everyday life.”

All attendees received a playbill with resource listings, information on the SPTS Youth Council and goodies from 2nd Floor Youth Helpline, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Monmouth County Stigma Free Initiative, Feeling Swell and SPTS. The concert was limited to 50 cars and each car had two designated parking spots to adhere to social distancing regulations. Masks were required if attendees were outside of the vehicles. The SPTS Youth Council is a program that began in 2015 for high school students in Monmouth and Ocean County. Students collaborate with SPTS staff and volunteers to work on suicide prevention projects, learn resiliency and helping skills, and act as SPTS ambassadors in the prevention process. SPTS also offers $2,000 scholarships to three graduating seniors in the program. Since 2015, more than 400 high school students have participated in the Youth Council. MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR

Bert Parcells, MD SEAVIEW ORTHOPAEDIC AND MEDICAL ASSOCIATES has more than 30 years of experience and a comprehensive array of orthopaedic services offered in six locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Three years ago the practice welcomed a specialist in joint preservation and joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. He and his family recently moved to Little Silver and love walking to school, biking the neighborhood, and living five minutes from the beach. Meet your neighbor, Dr. Bert Parcells. Why I chose to be a doctor: Practicing medicine has given me the ability to meet and treat so many great people from our community. It’s gratifying work. I am passionate about joint preservation and joint replacement surgeries because they work incredibly well. I love being able to help my patients return to a healthy, active life. I have trained in using minimally invasive techniques and adopted emerging technology, such as robotics, to maximize patient recovery time and outcomes. A proud moment in my practice: I was inducted into the National Honors Society (AOA) in medical school, an award given to the top 1% of medical graduates. More recently, this past year, I participated in a medical mission in the Dominican Republic performing surgery on severely debilitated people. I am fortunate to have been educated here in New Jersey, and I enjoy the opportunity to share my surgical knowledge and skills to teach other physicians. What sets me apart from others doing what I do: For hip replacements, I specialize in the Direct Anterior Hip Approach. This minimally invasive technique allows for rapid recovery because I avoid cutting and damaging the surrounding muscle. This allows most patients to rapidly transition away from pain medication, and many walk into their first postoperative visit with a big smile and no cane. Patients often specifically ask for this approach - I am the top anterior hip surgeon at Monmouth Medical Center and Ocean Medical Center.

36

as they need. It’s important to me that their concerns are addressed, that they understand their diagnosis, and that we are excited about working toward a solution together. I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team at Seaview - where our focus is always on patient care. Why my family chose Little Silver: My wife is from New Jersey and she spent every summer growing up at the shore. During my orthopedic residency we frequently visited Monmouth County and I began to realize what a special place this is. We love it here. My wife, Alexis, recently started her own practice, Parcells Plastic Surgery, that focuses on women’s health and empowerment and we have two daughters Genevieve, 4, and Rosalie, 2. My best life tip to share: The hardest part about anything is starting. Once you get going, it gets easier. My favorite quote: “Spending your life waiting, for a moment that just don’t come. Well, don’t waste your time waiting” - Bruce Springsteen.

The most rewarding part of my career: There is no better feeling than seeing a happy patient walk into my office after a preservation or replacement surgery. They are often amazed at the speed of their recovery and I love to hear them say, “I should have done this sooner!”

The biggest influence on my career and life: My uncle and my mother. Both incredibly hard-working people that built their own businesses while always making family their priority.

The most challenging part of what I do: I wish there were more hours in the day! As my practice grows, I am constantly looking for ways to work smarter. My priority has always been to spend as much time with patients

What I do when I’m not working: These days I spend a lot of time at the parks in the area with my wife and kids. I also enjoy hiking, cycling, and getting in a little golf when I can.

CBA Co-Founder Celebrated

Track Complex named for Dr. George Sheehan

In 1962, the Christian Brothers Academy track & field program was in its formative years, with no championships or national rankings to tout just yet. The Academy cleared an area on its 157-acre campus to create a competition field for the team. Officially, it was named after co-founder Dr. George Sheehan, then an enthusiastic runner with great vision for the young program at CBA. Last month, CBA rekindled Sheehan’s love for the Academy with a special outdoor gathering of family, friends and CBA faithful. The reason was worthy of the buildup: the upcoming $1.2 million track & field complex will proudly bear the Sheehan name once again. Dr. Sheehan was a noted cardiologist, best-selling author, and leading voice of the running and fitness movement that began in the late 1960s. A competitive college runner, he began to run intervals in the historic Round Barn with the CBA runners, and ultimately, completed multiple Boston Marathons and clocked the world’s first sub-five-minute mile by a 50-year-old. As part of the ongoing Forever CBA Capital Campaign, the new venue will feature an eight-lane track that incorporates a natural grass infield and the most up-to-date safety and performance technology. It will provide enhanced spectator viewing, a new scoreboard and sound system, and a dedicated equipment shed. The complex will be located behind the varsity baseball field, which will make it visible from the center of the CBA campus. Committed to the values instilled by his own Catholic education, Sheehan worked alongside his father-in-law Peter Fleming, and John Henderson to establish CBA for young men in Monmouth County that would develop into one of the best college preparatory schools in the state. “These men saw a need for their community, they wanted the type of education for their sons that they had growing up,” said Tim Sheehan ’65, the second eldest son of Dr. Sheehan. “It is fitting that the new Sheehan Track & Field will be more central on our campus,” said President Br. Frank Byrne ’75. “Dr. Sheehan played an integral role in making CBA a reality for generations of young men, not to mention his impact on our running community.”

Grand Opening! Circus Wines, Beer & Spirits Open in Lincroft

Circus Wines, Beer & Spirits is now open in what used to be the Manhattan Bagel in Lincroft Commons on Newman Springs Road. Owned by both the Azzolina and Scaduto families, it is their fourth liquor store under the Circus umbrella that also includes five Foodtown supermarkets in Monmouth County. The two families have been a part of Monmouth County business for decades, going back to the 1950s and a candy shop in Highlands. What you may not know is that the business is actually a single-family endeavor, as the two families are cousins. Anyone who has driven Rt. 35 in Middletown is familiar with the giant 30-foot-tall red, blue, and yellow circus clown that has been a part of the area since 1956 when the first Food Circus Supermarket was built. Calico, as the clown is named, has long been a part of the fun, family gathering theme Circus has always projected. Soon that flagship location will undergo a renovation with some exciting changes on the horizon, including a separate tasting room, classrooms for wine, beer, and liquor education plus food pairing courses, and possibly a cafĂŠ offering wines by the glass and small bites.

Hair & Makeup Services ON-LOCATION FOR

Any Occasion

All four liquor stores are known for their incredibly wide variety of wines from all over the world, as well as their beer selection that includes many locally brewed offerings. The company is known to pride itself on being able to acquire any beverage from anywhere in the world upon request.

HABcore Expands, Grand Opening Held in Red Bank

L to R: Steve Heisman, Executive Director HABcore; Red Bank Councilwoman, Kate Triggiano; Red Bank Councilman, Hazim Yassin; Assemblywoman Joanne Downey; Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling; Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna; and Kathleen Mullarkey, HABcore Board President

Last month, HABcore celebrated the grand opening of its four-unit expansion project on River Street in Red Bank. This project was funded through donations by generous community individuals as well as New Jersey Natural Gas, the Lydia Collins deForest Charitable Trust, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ National Housing Trust Fund, and the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation. HABcore is a nonprofit organization in Red Bank serving Monmouth and Ocean counties whose mission is to provide permanent housing and individualized support, helping homeless families, veterans, and individuals with special needs move through crisis to stability, giving them the opportunity to improve their lives.

This is the first time the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has donated to help house the homeless in Monmouth County. “JBJ Soul Foundation is thrilled to partner with HABcore and other local organizations to see the River Street project come to fruition,” said Jon Bon Jovi, Board Chairman of the JBJ Soul Foundation. “Affordable and permanent housing continues to be scarce for many homeless individuals and families in Monmouth and Ocean counties, particularly during these challenging times. We remain committed to our mission of helping those in need in Red Bank and surrounding communities—whether a place to call home on River Street, a warm, healthy, and delicious meal at JBJ Soul Kitchen, or access to support services and community resources at the JBJ & PBC Hope & Comfort Warming Center. All of which are within walking distance to one another.” “We are excited to offer permanent homes to low income individuals with special needs residing in this affluent area. We are always looking to provide new housing for those in our community who are less fortunate. We also offer supportive services and new avenues of independence.” said Steve Heisman, Executive Director. As part of HABcore’s Independence Pathways Program, the residents will receive supportive services, such as training in job acquisition skills and financial literacy. Two of the residents are currently enrolled in Lunch Break’s Life Skills Program. Approved unanimously by the Red Bank Zoning Board of Adjustment, the project contains a first-floor wheelchair accessible unit with a motorized lift. A new breezeway laundry room connects the original structure with the new addition, and a fire suppression system has been installed to serve both structures. All construction is energy efficient.

Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County held Annual Wine Event Fundraiser The Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County held its annual Wine Event fundraiser, held as a drive through vineyards tour at the historic 4JG’s Vineyards in Colts Neck. Every year since 2011, the Legal Aid Society has held this important fundraising event at the 4JG’s Vineyards and, despite the pandemic, this year was no exception. Instead of having the customary on-site reception with sampling of wines and harvest foods, the Society creatively held a scenic driving tour experience that safely distanced attendees in the car, accompanied by a YouTube narration. A sampling of harvest foods, sweets and, of course, a bottle of wine to enjoy at home, were given to the attendees as they drove through the vineyards enjoying the canopies of luscious grapes at their most magnificent harvest time. This important fundraising event, generously donated by John and Janet Giunco, showcased its award winning wines and its distinctive agricultural efforts to the community. The proceeds from this annual event support the Legal Aid Society of Monmouth County, a non-profit organization established in 1950 by local Monmouth County lawyers and community leaders to provide pro bono legal services to indigent and handicapped residents of Monmouth County. For the past 70 years the Legal Aid Society has successfully implemented its mission of providing free legal services to those most in need for a wide range of civil matters including child support, child custody, divorce, foreclosure, bankruptcy and tenancy issues.

YMCA Partners with Local Agencies to Distribute Nearly 10,000 Meals and Food Supplies During Pandemic Response to COVID-19 Crisis is Largest Outreach Effort in Y’s 146-Year History as a Cause Driven Community Organization

The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County pivoted immediately when its facilities shut down in March as the COVID crisis started. The gym floors, exercise spaces and pools were vacant, but employees and volunteers jumped into action to respond to critical community needs. Working in partnership with area food banks and community organizations, the Y has been distributing hundreds of meals and food supplies four days a week at its facilities in Freehold, Middletown, Old Bridge and Red Bank. The Y initiated and carried out blood drives and COVID-19 testing at several facilities. The Y also offered emergency childcare for essential workers, and mental health services for community members struggling during the crisis. Y President and CEO Laurie Goganzer said, “We knew that this unprecedented event would compound stress factors for people in our community who were already struggling to make ends meet. The added pressure of social isolation, health and safety fears, concerns about job loss and food insecurity would have a big impact on those we served. We identified our most immediate needs and did what we could to become a critical safety net and support system.” The Freehold Borough YMCA remains one of the busiest locations among the Y’s branches in Monmouth and Middlesex counties. Three days every week, families and seniors gather at the Freehold Y for crisis relief boxes from Fulfill, fresh produce from the Freehold Safety Net Group and other food donated to the Y. Nearly 8,000 free meals

have been distributed by the Freehold Y since the start of the health crisis. “The community response to support the food relief efforts in Freehold has been invaluable,” according to Jo Ann Rountree, the Y’s senior director of community outreach, who oversees the food distribution in Freehold. “In addition to Fulfill and the Freehold Safety Net, Investors Bank, ShopRite, Panera Bread, Meet the Need and a local farm have contributed fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods and prepared foods,” Rountree added. Goganzer said dozens of volunteers have worked more than 160 hours assisting with the recent food distribution and food drives – all part of the Y’s Togetherhood® initiative, which recruits Y members to provide support outside the walls of the Y. The Y has also collected nonperishable food, infant formula, diapers, and hygiene items for Lunch Break, Fulfill and the Old Bridge Township Food Bank. The Y will continue food distribution at these locations until further notice: Freehold Borough YMCA, 41 Center Street, Freehold; Red Bank Family YMCA, 166 Maple Avenue, Red Bank; Old Bridge Family YMCA, 1 Mannino Park Drive, Old Bridge; and Bayshore Family Success Center, 945 NJ-36, Leonardo For more information on food distribution, donations, volunteering or other Y programs and services, connect with the Y at ymcanj.org or on social media by following @ymcaGMC.

New Jersey Unsung Heroes Awarded The New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHOF) annually honors local heroes not typically recognized for their work through the Unsung Hero Award. This year’s honorees are prominent community leader Bill Lavin and the crew of the Battleship New Jersey, both of whom were inducted as part of the NJHOF’s 12th Annual Induction Ceremony on October 18.

Rumson 9/11 Memorial Dedicated

Rumson Fire Company 9/11 Memorial Monument Committee members (L to R) FF Justin Bradley, Ex-Chief Joe Ward, Ex-Chief Nick Luiten, Ex-Chief Ed Ott, Ex-Chief Paul Halligan, Ex-Chief Larry Cadman, Rumson Boy Scout Griffin Volk, and FF Matt Moore

The Rumson Fire Company unveiled its new 9/11 Memorial Monument on September 12 in front of the firehouse on East River Road. A culmination of years of planning and hard work, the project pays tribute to the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The Rumson Fire Company submitted a lottery request to the NY/NJ Port Authority to receive a piece of the World Trade Center. The winning piece, identified as Artifact # I-0004z, is a 147-pound steel beam from the destroyed buildings, and was unveiled as the centerpiece of the memorial. In remarks at the ceremony, fire department Lieutenant Paul Halligan noted that of the 2,606 people who died at the World Trade Center in the September 11, 2001 attack, eight were EMTs/paramedics; 71 were law enforcement officers; and 343 were firefighters. He also noted that in the days following the attacks, the Rumson Fire Company raised more than $40,000 that went directly to Widows and Children’s Fund of the FDNY. It took the work of many to bring the memorial to fruition, including Ex-Chief Joe Ward and FF Justin Bradley who picked up the artifact from JFK Hanger 17, and Committee members Ex-Chief Nick Luiten, Ex-Chief Larry Cadman, Ex-

This past summer, Oak Hill Academy was tasked with the preparation for a full day, five day a week schedule for all grades, prekindergarten to eighth. As a result, ventilation systems were updated with bipolar ionization units, air purifiers were installed in all rooms that didn’t have HVAC systems, and buildings received new slider windows to help increase air flow. A welcome addition was the establishment of eight

outdoor classrooms that teachers can utilize for meaningful instruction and a healthy dose of fresh air. They even provide an opportunity for a short mask break as the students are outdoors and physical distancing. Pavilions and tents were erected in various parts of the 20-acre Oak Hill campus. Today’s technology affords the learning cycle to continue smoothly due to Wi-Fi connectivity as students use their laptops and teachers provide creative instruction. Students continue to collaborate as they work together using social distancing and Google Classroom. They share their writing and investigate issues of high interest. The outdoor areas are also perfect for doing experiments in math and science, which require additional space. The outdoor classrooms are also conducive to students gathering in large circles to discuss an essential question using their critical thinking skills and share opinions backed up with evidence. Deep thinking is also encouraged by the OHA teachers as they inspire using the Socratic Method. The school intends to use these unique outside spaces for their PreK-8 grade students as long as the weather permits since the benefits of outdoor learning are both educational and health-related.
