A Brief History of Cheriton by Vincent Williams
St Martin’s church has stood on the hillside at the top of the Horn Street valley, at the west end of Folkestone for over a thousand years. The date the church was built is not known, however the original building (consisting of the nave and tower) was built prior to 900AD. Inside of the church one can see the
w
original Saxon doorway into the tower and a Saxon window above. This building is the oldest church in Folkestone and the parish church of Cheriton. But where as many local history books have documented Folkestone few have given Cheriton more than a passing mention; mostly to acknowledge the fact that the churchyard contains the grave of Samuel Plimsoll, a Liberal M.P. for Derby, who is world renowned for creating the “Plimsoll Line” on ships which has undoubtedly saved the lives of many thousands of seamen, and earned him the nickname “The Sailor’s Friend.” There is evidence of a settlement in what we now know as Cheriton as early as 2500BC although little is known about the settlers. The only evidence, so far, comes from the discovery of late-Neolithic pottery in 1972 by workmen laying a water main. The suggestion was that the two vessels found may have been casually discarded domestic

rubbish, but they were more likely to be burial vessels as their condition tended to suggest they were buried complete. The two vessels found dated from different periods, the earlier one from the middle of the third millennium BC and a more complete bowl probably from around 2000BC. Other excavations in 1948 had also unearthed pottery believed to be Belgic and Samian ware, from a later period, 1st century AD. At the time it was suggested, although not conclusively proved, that this find gave credence to a Roman road from Lympne to Dover passing through this area. The name Cheriton derives from the Old English words “Ciricetūn” meaning Church farmstead and this church, as mentioned above, dates from Saxon times with additions being made in the 13th, 14th, 19th and 21st centuries. However, most people today think of Cheriton not as the rural village that stretches down the Horn Street valley but the built up area straddling the main road into Folkestone.

Land ownership in early times was based on service usually granted perhaps in the first instance by the monarch of the day and then granted similarly by his supporters. According to Hasted’s History of Kent in 1790 there were several manors within the parish of Cheriton, namely: Cheriton, Enbrook, Bishops Enbrook, Sweet Arden, Caseborne, Swetton and Ackhanger. Records of these date back to the 12th century, but some had long since disappeared by the 18th century and Hasted’s time. It is important to note also that the word “manor” does not necessarily mean that a stately home existed; the manor might just as easily have been a farmstead or other building and the surrounding land. In fact until the late 1800s well over 90% of Cheriton was agricultural land. But with the arrival of the railway and the resulting success of Folkestone as a tourist resort together with the proximity of Shorncliffe Camp, a separate entity called Cheriton Street sprang up to service the needs of both the army camp and Folkestone’s hotels. In fact Cheriton’s main industry was to become the laundry business and earned it the name of the “Washtub of Folkestone!”Gradually the villages or hamlets of Cheriton, Risborough, Barton and now Cheriton Street have all merged into one – Cheriton as we now know it. Over the years industries have come and gone - the brickyards, and Dormobile (who converted Vauxhall cars and Bedford vans). In addition, Magazine when responding to advertisements

the invention of the washing machine sounded the death knell for the laundry industry with the last laundry closing down in the 1980s. The Channel Tunnel has brought some prosperity to a town in decline whilst robbing it of ancient agricultural land, and yet Cheriton has continued to survive and grow in size. So with Cheriton possibly losing some of its own identity from becoming simply an outskirt of Folkestone, local resident and author Vince Williams, has decided to chronicle the history of Cheriton in a series of books which are raising money for a new community centre. Six 80 page volumes are already out and available from Rocheforts Newsagents and Forget Me Not in Cheriton, and Brenda Books in the Hythe Malt house at a cost of £10 for paperbacks and £15 for hardbacks. Four volumes chronicle various shops, buildings, business, schools, Shorncliffe Camp, and important events and people. The other two volumes focus on St Martins and All Souls Churches.

The Shorncliffe Trust – its past, present and future…
Shorncliffe’s history and importance stretches back over 200 hundred years. Initially a Militia training camp and then command centre for the defence of the South Coast of England during the Napoleonic wars under Sir John Moore. It was at Shorncliffe that he created the legendary Light Brigade (Division) through his unique training style of men from the 43rd, 52nd and 95th Rifles, famed through the peninsular war to the Battle of Waterloo, and still influences modern army training. During the Victorian era Shorncliffe became established as the second largest military camp in Britain, which hosted almost every British regiment, as well as the Royal Canadian Regiment and the German Foreign legion. Soldiers passing through Shorncliffe saw service across the British Empire and beyond, and the camp saw construction of permanent barrack blocks and buildings, that remain today. However many are about to be demolished, despite the efforts of English Heritage and the Trust, although a few have been listed. The Great War was a defining moment for the camp and post war its primary role has been a centre of army education from Monty’s trench warfare 10 CHAS01 Magazine A/W.indd 10-11

school in the 1920’s to the Junior Leaders in the 1970’s. The Sir John Moore Memorial Library was established in the 1920’s. The situation at Shorncliffe should be of grave concern to those who care about their community and heritage .The reduction of the camp meant surplus land and building shave sold by the MOD/DIO to developer Taylor Wimpey who plan to demolish many historic buildings and create over 900 houses in place, altering the historical integrity forever. However the Trust with support from English Heritage enabled some of the buildings to be listed and recognise the original trenches have a historical value. The Shorncliffe Trust has been

campaigning for 10 years to save the on-site heritage and archaeology and continues to do so. 2015 is a crucial year for Shorncliffe, the Trust and the plans for the future. Control of the “back door training area” is now in the hands of developers, but the Trust’s vision is to create an international heritage and education centre. Discussions are ongoing with Shepway Council, the Trust and Sandgate Parish Council, as well as local historical organisations. The goal this year is to see its rebirth. The Trust, a registered UK Charity, has forged links with International governments, tourist boards and specialist tour companies to promote Shorncliffe as a future heritage tourism destination, to create local tourism and create jobs and training opportunities locally. In April the Shorncliffe Trust worked with the Ambassador of Belgium to promote the Battle of Waterloo 200 commemorations and the Trust held an event in Cheriton with the Canadian High Commission celebrating 100th anniversary of the Canadian Expeditionary Force arriving in WW1. The Trust is going to have one of its busiest year’s ever with its members performing before the Queen at Horseguards Parade in London and the 200thCommemoration of the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium. They will be hosting locally again this year, the beautiful and evocative Light in the Darkest Hour commemoration and holding the military history lecture sat ‘Shorncliffe Lectures’. 2015 also sees the Shorncliffe Trust publish a series of books entitled The Shorncliffe Lectures which are available via the Trust’s website. The Trust is engaged in community events across the South East of England promoting Shorncliffe and Sandgate’s heritage. Founded by Chris Shaw in 2005 against seemingly insurmountable odds, the Trust

is determined to fight for their proposal. Shorncliffe’s fate has attracted support from the British Army and military academics and historians. The Trust’s patrons include author Bernard Cornwell, army veteran Rory Mackenzie, as well enlisting the support of Michael Morpurgo. The British Army, and especially the Rifles, all understand the urgent need for this project to succeed. Many local residents have joined this cause and the Trust hopes that many more will join it to help preserve the story of Shorncliffe; its past, its present and hopefully its futurebefore it is too late.

The Triennial was curated for the first time by Lewis Biggs, under the title, Lookout, which was more fitting than Lewis or the Creative Foundation could have expected. As predicted, Alex Hartley and a number of volunteers took their position looking out over the harbour from their Grand Burstin-base camp as part of Vigil. Triennialgoers looked out over the town from the exhibition’s wind-powered lift and over the harbour from Gabriel Lester’s bamboo observation deck. Something & Son’s sustainable greenhouse looked to the future, experimenting with alternative urban food production. The more surprising events included the thousands of people that came down to Folkestone to dig up Michael Sailstorfer’s treasure buried on Folkestone Outer Harbour Beach. The appropriation of disused spaces such as Emma Hart’s installation in a domestic interior and Tim Etchells’ neon text work in Folkestone’s derelict harbour railway station offered a renewed perspective on a familiar townscape. The Creative Foundation team took this one step further by inviting muf architecture/art to completely renovate an area of the Creative Quarter known as Payers Park. Previously a sloping wasteland, it is now a permanent park specially designed for the different needs of people in the local area. In addition to Payers Park, around the third of the works from this year’s Triennial will become permanent fixtures in the town, adding to the permanent collection of Folkestone Artworks that have been created from the previous two Triennials. We shall have to wait and see over the next few months which artworks will make the Magazine when responding to advertisements

cut, but one thing is certain – Folkestone has amassed one of the most unique and quirky art collections in the UK, making it quite a special place to live, work and study. More people than ever visited Folkestone for the Triennial this year, cementing it as a one of the South East’s leading cultural destinations. The Folkestone Triennial public programme was buzzing with activity for the duration of the festival. With field trips, artistled events, historical and community talks, guided tours, family and schools workshops on offer, there was something for everyone. Folkestone hosted two weekend conferences that were a huge success. Leading art world figures such Tate Britain Director, Penelope Curtis, and architect, Sir Terry Farrell, came to Folkestone to discuss and debate topics such as cultural regeneration and the role of sculpture in the public realm. We even saw satellite events take centre stage with the Folkestone Fringe earning critical acclaim this year. Forty projects by over eighty artists were exhibited and produced in a range of public and private spaces. Following the Triennial an independent survey showed that 89.8% of visitors rated the artworks as good or excellent, with 96.3% rating this Folkestone Triennial as good or excellent overall. Qualitative feedback also demonstrated that the visitor experience was greatly enhanced by the quality of Triennial Hosts who were stationed at each exhibit to aid and inform, as well as having a central visitor centre. Audience numbers increased from 51,000 in 2008 and 103,000 in 2011 to 135,000 in 2014. Awareness also leaped from 65 to 88% with a 49% increase in first time visitors. A lively and extensive programme of 203 community, schools, further and higher education events reached 18,402 participants through talks, tours, workshops, conferences and other activities. Catering for all audiences these events aimed to encourage visitors to engage with the artworks and key concepts. Please mention

In addition Folkestone Triennial received a fantastic level of press coverage with 119 articles printed in regional, national and international publications, 14 radio and TV coverage items and 202 web presences amassing a staggering 1,685,399,535 hits, further establishing Folkestone as a national and international home for contemporary art. It is estimated our 135,000 visitors spent money locally during their stay with approximately £2,700,000 being spent during their stay. Overall direct and indirect impact totalled just over £65.5 million. These figures demonstrate the extent to which Folkestone Triennial has grown and developed. With a focus on engagement and participation new and younger audiences were actively encouraged to explore the world of contemporary art with the barriers posed by more conventional exhibitions removed. Alastair Upton, Chief Executive of the

Creative Foundation, said “We are obviously really delighted with the impact Folkestone Triennial had artistically and financially for Folkestone and for attracting thousands of visitors and extensive national and international press coverage. We have already started working on the 2017 Triennial and once again have asked Lewis Biggs to curate a show that will inspire and take our visitors to a different artistic journey”. This summer Folkestone Artworks, the collection of permanent artworks left behind from the 2008 and 2011 Folkestone Triennials, will be launching an additional 10 pieces from Folkestone Triennial 2014. So why not pay Folkestone a visit and take a tour of the exhibition without walls. Folkestone Triennial 2014 was supported by The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Arts Council England, the Folkestone Estate, Kent County Council and Shepway District Council.

About Folkestone Triennial Folkestone Triennial is one of the most ambitious exhibitions of contemporary art outside the gallery context presented in the UK. It takes place in the seaside town of Folkestone, the coast of England nearest to continental Europe. Artists of international standing are invited to use the town as their ‘canvas’, utilising public spaces to create striking new art that reflects issues affecting both the town and the wider world. Artists commissioned to take part in previous Triennials include Cornelia Parker, Tracey Emin, Jeremy Deller, Martin Creed and Richard Wilson. Inaugurated in 2008, the Triennial takes place every three years and is one of the 5 key projects of the Creative Foundation. A second project is Folkestone Artworks, the collection of permanent artworks resulting from previous Triennial commissions.

“The Battle of Waterloo was won on the training fields of Shorncliffe” By The Shorncliffe Trust We will soon be celebrating the 200th year anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The men who trained and were stationed in Sandgate and Shorncliffe were instrumental in the ultimate defeat of Napoleon. Sandgate and the overlooking heights of Shorncliffe have been central to the defence of Kent for at least 500 years. Upon the declaration of war upon Revolutionary France in 1793, the battery at the base of the cliffs at Seabrook was home to a barracks and the level plateau used for light infantry and artillery training. In 1800, the soon to be named 95th Rifles were trained at Shorncliffe. These were soon joined by the 43rd and 52nd Light Infantry that formed under Sir John Moore a Light Brigade that later became famous as the Light Division in the Iberian Peninsula. Every year the Shorncliffe Trust holds a commemoration for Sir John Moore who was killed at Corunna in 1809. He lived in Sandgate from 1802-04. Sir John Moore put into practice the concepts of the ‘universal soldier’ that encompassed a new style army training. The training of all subsequent Light Infantry was carried out there. The officers and men were stationed at Shorncliffe, Hythe and Brabourne Lees. Shorncliffe became the depot for the 95th, for training new recruits, equipping them, organising supplies and a hospital on Hospital Hill was established. The 95th Rifles armed with the accurate Baker Rifle were feared by the French wherever they went. One French Officer named the 95th “Grasshoppers” due to their habit of “popping up” unexpectedly. One Rifleman Corporal William Law, trained at Shorncliffe in 1805 and fought in the battle of Waterloo in 1815. This year Vince Law, a direct descendant, will walk in his ancestor’s footsteps on to the battlefield in Belgium 200 years later to the day, “To me it is remembering the sacrifices made by our Please mention
forefathers and I am humbled to think that this man helped turn the tide of history.” At Waterloo, there were four light infantry regiments that had been form or trained at Shorncliffe (51st, 52nd, 71st and 95th) and had the “Esprit de Corps” so encouraged by Moore. These formed the most experienced infantry in Wellington’s infamous army. The 43rd Light Infantry and parts of the 95th Rifles had not returned from America. The 51st Light Infantry protected the western flank and approached to the Chateau of Hougoumont defended by detachments from the Foot Guards and allied infantry. In the final stages of the battle, Adam’s Brigade (52nd, 71st and 95th Rifles) that had been held in reserve by Wellington defeated the final attack of the Imperial Guard by an audacious wheeling manoeuvre that was carried out swiftly to pour flanking fire upon the French guardsmen. The Shorncliffe Trust is engaged in community events across the South East of England that promotes Shorncliffe and Sandgate’s heritage. Gardening Tips for Summer 1. Keep soil well fertilized.
Helping your plants thrive in the Summer can often be a case of pre- planning and soil fertility. A strong plant will be able more likely to cope with the stresses of high heat and dry weather through the peak of the hot weather if some factors are taken in to consideration. The soil needs to be well fertilized before planting preferably using organic compost .

Creation of Samphire Hoe After considerable discussion in which around 60 sites were proposed for the disposal of the Channel Tunnel spoil, it was decided that the option with the least adverse environmental impact was to reclaim land at the base of Shakespeare Cliff. There was already access to the site from the Dover to Folkestone railway line and through a tunnel in the cliff left from the 1970s tunnel attempt. The main advantage of this location was no need for any transportation of the spoil to another site and the creation of a large platform to be used as a work site as the tunnel was dug. Extensive research revealed then that depositing spoil at the base of the cliff in artificial lagoons constructed with sheet piled walls was the most environmentally acceptable option. This also had the added advantage of providing an increased work area as tunnelling works progressed. As the Tunnel boring machines cut the chalk marl it was loaded onto rail tipper wagons, brought back along the tunnel and then moved onto the surface by conveyor belt. 1.7km of sheet piling enclosed lagoons were then in filled with the chalk marl. The area became a 24hours a day work site. Once construction works were completed, the site was then landscaped to provide an undulating topography including some low lying wetlands.
Most of the Hoe is accessible for wheelchair and pushchairs and there is a recommended route sign posted “Front path” and “West shore” Since the end of 2014, there is an education shelter at Samphire Hoe, which is for hire. The shelter is equipped with a 60m2 classroom and a 40m2 exhibition area that can comfortably accommodate large numbers of school children or tourists visiting the nature reserve at the foot of Shakespeare Cliff. The building’s design incorporates eco-construction criteria. The site office provides a tea kiosk, which is open every weekend of the year and most days from Easter to September. There are toilet facilities, a RADAR based disabled access toilet and a baby changing room. Staff and volunteers are present to answer questions. There are also free leaflets, an information board and panels with the latest wildlife sightings. Tel: (0)1304 225 649 Contact Address: c/o Dover District Council, White Cliffs Business Park, Dover, Kent Ct16 3Eu , united Kingdom
A place for people Samphire Hoe is an amazing place. There is something for everyone who enjoys the outdoors and wildlife: a stunning location and outstanding scenery, peace and quiet, walks, wildflowers, birds, sea angling and picnics. And the further you go from the car park, the wilder the site becomes. This tranquil setting never fails to impress, with many visitors coming back time and time again. In 2014, more than 80,000 visitors explored the nature reserve. Please mention
