Canterbury Magazine Welcome to Canterbury CommunityAd Magazine. The Canterbury CommunityAd Magazine is the new community magazine for Canterbury which will be published for the people of Canterbury and distributed to all homes on a quarterly basis – October, January, April, & July. The magazine will be a useful source of information about activities and issues that are important to the Community and will also include information to keep you all up to date with the busy community that you are a part of. Do you have something you would like to share with your Community? Is there something of interest that everyone should know? We welcome the opportunity to publish your news and information whether it be an achievement in your club, group or association or perhaps you are holding an event and wish to publicise it to your wider community? If so, we would like to hear from you. If you have a story you think your community would be interested in, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Additionally, if you have any pictures to accompany your stories or newsworthy items, we would also be very pleased to receive them. Air Ambulance appeals for volunteers A life-saving charity providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in the south East is appealing for more volunteers in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Members of the public can help out in a number of ways including placing and emptying collection boxes, selling merchandise at fundraising events and representing the charity at cheque presentations. They can also help raise awareness of the service as public speakers by giving talks to local groups, clubs, schools, societies and other organisations. Other roles at Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance include store and street collectors, drivers and couriers, and office administration. Head of Volunteer Resource Amy Hamer said: “As a charity, we cover a region in excess of 3,500 square miles with a population of 4.5 million people. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organisation and absolutely vital to our operation in terms of raising funds and awareness. “They can give as little or as much of their
time as they like, and all new recruits will receive an induction and training in each of their chosen roles.” Volunteering is an opportunity for people to “give something back” to the community, meet new people and gain work experience. The air ambulance’s volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups and include former patients, bankers, teachers, pilots and a magician. Paul Skelley, a former business intelligence manager, said: “I’ve been a volunteer for just over four years and because of my background in training it was an ideal opportunity to use these skills with the air ambulance. “It’s an exciting role and a superb opportunity to do something worthwhile for a very worthwhile organisation.”

Talking Therapies@Psicon Mental health affects us all. How we think and feel about ourselves and our lives impacts on our behaviour and how we cope in tough times. Whether we call it well-being, emotional welfare or mental health, it’s key to living a fulfilling life. There are times when everyone feels stressed or unhappy. These bad times can pass but sometimes there are problems that do not go away and it can become difficult to cope. Research indicates that 1 in 4 people experience common problems such as low mood, stress, worry, anxiety, phobia, panic or reliving traumatic events in any year, which can be triggered by work stressors, personal relationships, adjustments to new situations, losses or accidents – to name only a few. It can be difficult to know where to turn when experiencing these difficulties; talking to a GP can seem daunting, and often people find themselves suffering in silence. One of the biggest barriers to accessing support is that often people just don’t know where to turn.
Talking Therapies @Psicon Anxious? Depressed? Feelings of panic? Low mood? Fear of social situations? Feeling down? Worried? Stressed? Flashbacks of traumatic events? Obsessive thoughts?

Car tax disc replaced by electronic system The traditional paper car tax disc has been replaced by an electronic system this October, and drivers are being urged to understand the rules The tax disc, which was first introduced in 1921, will cease to exist in paper form from October 1, with a new electronic system being put in its place. Under new rules announced in the Autumn Statement last year, motorists will now have to register their car online to pay Vehicle Excise Duty, otherwise known as road tax. This can be done via Direct Debit on the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) website or at a Post Office branch. Those who don’t register for the tax, will be caught out by number plate recognition cameras which track each vehicle on the road. While the move aims to streamline services and, it is claimed, save British businesses millions of pounds a year in administrative costs, motorists are being warned to brush up on the new rules or face possible fines.

Please mention
The change mostly affects those buying or selling a used car. Anyone who buys a used car will no longer benefit if there are months left on the tax disc, as the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the car. This means buyers will have to renew their tax disc straight away, or risk being caught out on the road in an untaxed car. The seller of the vehicle is responsible for informing the DVLA of a change of ownership, otherwise they could face a possible £1,000 fine. This can be done by filling out a V5C form and sending it to the DVLA. Vehicle sellers will get an automatic refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax. Paul Watters, head of roads policy at the AA, said: “This is a huge change and vehicle owners and drivers need to be aware of the rules. A driver, not registered owner, can be issued a non-endorsable fixed penalty for driving an untaxed car. An owner can be fined £80 for using an untaxed vehicle (one not registered off the road) and can be charged any back tax.”
Mr Watters said it was important all vehicle owners and motorists did their utmost to establish whether their vehicle was taxed or SORN’d (declared off the road) before driving the car.
What this means to you To drive or keep a vehicle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will still send you a renewal reminder when your vehicle tax is due to expire. This applies to all types of vehicles including those that are exempt from payment of vehicle tax.
Buying a vehicle From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle. You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch.
Selling a vehicle If you sell a vehicle after 1 October and you have notified DVLA, you will automatically get
a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax.
Vehicle tax refunds You will no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that the: • vehicle has been sold or transferred • vehicle has been scrapped at an Automated Treatment Facility • vehicle has been exported • vehicle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) • person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax class
Paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit From 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014: u

Checking the tax status of a vehicle You can check the tax status of any vehicle online. A survey published recently found fewer than half of drivers are aware of the changes, which prevent the discs being passed to new owners when cars are sold. Nearly three million used cars change hands each year and drivers who inadvertently flout the new rules face fines of up to £1,000. So be aware, that buying a new car, you will no longer be able to benefit if there are months left on a car’s tax disc as their tax will no longer be transferred with the car, so buyers will need to renew their disc straightaway or risk facing a fine.”

By changing the colour schemes you can make decorations for every occasion from christenings and first birthdays to 100th birthdays, a wedding with a difference or perhaps red and gold for Christmas. Roll the lavender flower paste until it is about 2mm thick, roll the lemon flower paste to the same thickness Lay the lemon paste on top of the lavender paste and roll again until the pastes are blended together and approx 2mm thick. I find placing a stay-fresh mat over the top before rolling stops the pastes from distorting Cut a square of the two tone flower paste Use a cutting wheel to cut diagonally from a corner towards the centre. Repeat for each corner Paint a circle of edible glue in the centre of the square Fold the point of the corner to the centre and press down to secure. Repeat for the other three corners Paint a small dot of edible glue in the centre and secure an edible decoration such as a moulded button or sugar ball or edible pearl in place. Leave to dry on foam I chose lavender and lemon flower pastes but you can use whichever colours you prefer

Top tips ] Using flower paste (a strong icing available from specialist cake shops such as Annabelle Jane Cake School) ensures your windmills hold their shape. ] Use a light dusting of cornflour to stop your icing from sticking. Cornflour works better than icing sugar. ] Allowing your windmills to dry before using them again ensures they hold their shape. ] You can create patterned and textured effects for your paste for full step-by-step instructions take a look at the tutorials section www.cake-school.uk ] You can make your decorations in advance - store them in a cardboard cake box (don’t use a tin or a plastic container as your shapes can sweat which will cause them to spoil) ] To fix your windmills to your cakes and cookies use either edible glue or a little royal icing.

Canterbury Cricket Club As another season draws to a close, Chairman of Canterbury Cricket Club, Richard Durrant considers that the Polo Farm based club is in good health and going from strength to strength. The club currently runs 5 men’s teams over a weekend and 11 Junior Teams ranging from under 9s to Under 18s in local leagues and competitions. The Saturday 2nd and 3rd XIs have won promotion in their respective leagues, and one of the club’s Under 11 sides won their Junior League. The youth set up at the club has been instrumental in providing younger players for the clubs senior teams over the past few years with around 15 players from the recent junior sides now playing each week in the weekend fixtures. The club has around 150 junior players from 5-18 years old with Kwik Cricket Sessions run on a Saturday morning throughout the Summer term by the Club’s coaches and volunteers for under 10’s and Tuesday evenings for the 11-18 year olds. They also run a Girls Under 11 team in the local league who play against the other boys teams. “The club is very lucky to have so many excellent and enthusiastic volunteer coaches and assistants to help with the Junior set up” says Richard, “which means that youngsters will get a solid introduction to the game from Kwik Cricket to hard-ball cricket which is played in a very competitive local league” The club runs indoor nets from January for both the Junior and Senior teams, to enable the players to continue their training over the
winter months. They also put in several junior and senior teams into the Indoor League played in Canterbury, with the men’s 1st Team having been crowned National Champions just a few seasons ago. They also run a winter academy for the most promising young players from the previous season, to prepare them for the onward journey into senior cricket once they come to the end of their time in the junior section. The Cricket Club is one of several sports clubs that make up Polo Farm Sports Club just outside the city centre. The club provides top level coaching and first class facilities at both Canterbury Hockey Club and Canterbury Tennis club both based on the site. There is a sense of excitement about the club with development of facilities under way starting with a sports hall being built that will encompass an Indoor Hockey and Cricket pitch which will enable year-round play. The Club also has an association with Kent County Cricket Club, providing training facilities for the county since the redevelopment of the St Lawrence Ground. Kent have a net facility at Polo Farm as well as using the venue for some of their 2nd XI matches and Kent Ladies matches.

Should every community have their own gym? Do you live in a rural location and have to travel to get to your local gym? Well, the residents of Bridge don’t any more, as they have one on their back door. But it isn’t your average gym… Community Gyms opened its doors in January 2014, and now has over 50 members . It aims to bridge the gap between Personal Training, group training, and regular gym going. It is a ‘coached gym’ where local people can exercise, learn to move better, develop better posture, become more healthy, learn about nutrition, take part in different disciplines, challenge themselves and enjoy being a part of a group of like-minded people. This all takes place under highquality, fully qualified and insured instruction. It even has its own massage therapy room. The gym is also involved with running community fitness events. In April, it hosted the ‘Bridge Tri
Challenge’ which saw local people run, row and perform body weight movements. In the coming months, there is a 5km trail run, amongst other events planned. There is also work going on with the local school. Special groups have attended the gym and climbed, jumped, skipped and had a lot of fun, whilst building physical skills and their confidence levels. There aren’t really any machines like you would find in a regular gym (only 1 rowing machine). There are ropes, a climbing wall, pull up rigs, kettle bells and some other interesting pieces of equipment. If you are a member of the gym, your results are tracked so that you can measure your progress. Statistics tracked include but are not limited to: strength (weighted

movement), body measurements (for those who want this), metabolic conditioning (CV fitness), nutritional improvements (for those that want this) Mobility and body weight skills/strength. Yoga is soon starting at the gym too, and a few other classes to meet different needs. So there really is no need for local residents to waste time and fuel in travelling into the city for their fitness needs anymore. Every community should have a community gym!

Ivan Cuesta Returns! The Medway Park Crusaders are very pleased to announce that Ivan Cuesta has agreed to return for another season as Head Coach and Director of Basketball. Cuesta is just completing his first season in England and has made a massive impact already in his time at the club. Next season will see him take on a larger role across the juniors while still coaching one of Crusaders’ men’s teams. Cuesta will be the Director of Basketball, overseeing all junior teams and junior coaches’ development. He will also maintain his roles as Associate Head Coach of the 11-16 and 16-19 Crusaders Academies at The Canterbury High School. Cuesta is looking forward to next season already, saying, “I´m really pleased to be part of this promising project another year. We´re already working in different off-season programs getting ready for a new challenging year.” Crusaders Chairman Jesse Sazant is thrilled to have Cuesta back saying, “Ivan has made a massive impact on our club, our academy
and me personally as a coach. His energy and relationships with the players and coaches play a huge part in his success. He is passionate and hard working and is a huge asset to our club.” Sazant added, “In his new role as Director of Basketball, Ivan will have even more of an opportunity to really shape where we are going as a club as we move into our new venue at Brompton Academy. I am very excited to continue working with him on a daily basis.” Cuesta summed up by adding, “This season has been really tough, with a lot of changes going on in the Club. I’m looking for helping the Club to grow and lay the foundation stone of a philosophy that involves the development of every single player within the junior program. The coaching staff that we have for next season makes me think that really good years are coming.”
