Winter is a great time to get fit! As a personal trainer, I think I’ve heard every excuse under the sun as to why people can’t get fit, healthy and change the way they feel about their body. ‘Winter’ is another one. “It’s too cold”, “It’s too dark”, “ I have to eat and drink bad things as it’s Christmas”…I’ve heard them all! So, in this article I’m going to give you some practical advice to help you stay fit and healthy this winter. Cold and wet weather is the first issue to consider. The best way is to get the right gear (and we all love having a good excuse to buy new gear, right?!). Firstly, I recommend investing in a hi-viz outer light weight jacket (water proof if possible, but that does bump up the price a bit). You can get these from any running shop or outdoor outlet. Secondly, I would recommend a long sleeved technical fabric base layer and possibly some leggings of the same material . These items should keep you warm and dry enough, what ever the weather. They will also not let you over heat too much, which is important. Thirdly, I would recommend some running gloves and
4
Please mention
running hat or head scarf (rather than woolly hat, which will make you too hot). Don’t let the weather stop you! Darkness is the second issue. The dark mornings and evenings can be, particularly if you are running (it helps to see where you’re going!). For this, I would recommend a head torch (and hi viz jacket as mentioned above so that cars can see you). Head torches are relatively inexpensive and the battery tends to last for a long time. If you are a female runner and dislike running alone in the dark (even with a head torch) , there is no substitute for having a buddy! Don’t let the dark stop you. Obviously I appreciate that Christmas is a nutritionally challenging time, bearing in mind the social aspect of the season. However, like at all other times of the year, YOU HAVE A CHOICE! Your choices will dictate your health and fitness, as at all times of the year. My advice is to enjoy your blow outs on only one or two days over the period, and for the rest of the season, don’t use it as an excuse!

Worry… the greatest enemy of a good mood We can all probably relate to having experienced worry at some point in our lives. Worrying is actually very common and, naturally in life, we occasionally experience situations that lead us to worry about some, or even many, things. Sometimes though worry can be problematic, especially if we find ourselves worrying uncontrollably and frequently; we can then find it hard to concentrate on anything other than the worry. We can also experience worries at quite inconvenient times – for example, when we are trying to drop off to sleep in the evening. We might find ourselves dwelling on things late into the night and this can mean that we find it harder to get to sleep. Often worries can seem overwhelming. Sometimes our worries act in a similar way to a magnet – we start worrying about one thing and then, before we know it, a whole load of other worries are pulled in; we then end up worrying about a whole host of different things. So wouldn’t it be great if we could be taught strategies to help us to deal with worries in a
A
productive way that can help us to feel less anxious? Well the good news is we can! Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short, is an evidence based approach that teaches us different tools and strategies for dealing with things like worry, low mood, anxiety and panic. CBT teaches us that there are two different types of worry: practical worries (those for which we may be able to find a solution) and hypothetical worries (those which are based so far in the future that we have absolutely no way of knowing if they may happen and cannot do anything about). Sorting our worries into these two categories can be very useful as there are different CBT tools to be used in overcoming each of them to manage excessive worrying. These tools are just a small part of the CBT toolkit which can be used to manage common everyday problems such as worry, stress, anxiety, low mood, panic or phobias. CBT can be accessed for free on the NHS via IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services.
Our service at Talking Therapies @ Psicon offers individual face to face psychological coaching and therapy to people aged 18 years and over. If you are experiencing any of the difficulties mentioned above and think that you may benefit from learning how to use CBT to overcome and manage your difficulties, please contact us directly on 01227 479902 or email us at talkingtherapies@psicon.co.uk

Easy Chicken Pie
Recipe
Total time 43 min | Prep 10 mins | Cook 33 mins | 6 to 8 servings Ingredients 3 chicken breasts ½ teaspoon sweet paprika ½ teaspoon dried sage ¼ teaspoon dried oregano Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 chopped onion 1 cup frozen peas and diced carrots 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons plain flour 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup thick double cream 1 shop-bought pie crust, unbaked and thawed if frozen 1 egg, lightly beaten
16
Please mention
Method Special equipment: 10-inch cast-iron pan Preheat the oven to 200º c (400º f ) Sprinkle the chicken breasts with paprika, sage, oregano, salt and pepper. Heat a 10-inch pan over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. When the oil begins to swirl, add the seasoned chicken and saute until cooked through, about 4 minutes on the first side and 3 minutes on the second side. Remove the chicken to a plate with tongs, leaving the oil in the pan. Rest the chicken for a few minutes, and then chop into ½ inch cubes. To the same pan, add the onions and peas and carrots and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Stir and cook until the onions become tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute longer. Sprinkle in the flour and stir until the flour dissolves into the vegetables and juices. Add the chicken stock and raise to a simmer, stirring until thickened. Once the liquid has thickened, stir in the cream. Season with salt, if needed. Return the chicken to the pan. Unfold the pie crust and place over the top of the filling, tucking the excess edges inside the pan. Brush the crust evenly with the egg wash. Using a knife, gently cut 3 vents in the top of the crust. Place in the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Thanington Re I was handed the keys to the newly built Resource Centre in October 2000, which was established specifically to support a housing estate in Thanington; a recognised area of deprivation and disadvantage. The Centre is a registered charity and has an acknowledged reputation for significant reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour, innovative work with young people and community cohesion. We employ 8 local people, and have over 30 volunteers and 12 Trustees, most of whom live locally and reflect the profile, needs and diversity of the local community. Despite previously being the source of many frontpage headlines, and being labelled by the media as ‘Little Beirut’, Thanington is no longer regarded by Kent Police as a crime hotspot’ with crime figures reduced by 50% within the first few years. The Centre is a very popular, multi-purpose and fully accessible building, surrounded by three football pitches and an extremely well-used, floodlit basketball/football court

For many years despite an annual foot-fall of over £46,000, the Centre survived via a patchwork of temporary mainly nonstatutory funding-streams from a variety of Trusts and Foundations, and then in 2008 we were successful in securing £300,000 from the Big Lottery to extend the Centre, to help us provide a much needed 246 square metre dedicated-youth space, plus stateof-the-art meeting and training rooms to hire out, in order to secure greater revenue and sustainability for the Centre, which fortunately appears to be working. Our primary aim is to enable local people to overcome the problems that prevent them from playing a full part in economic, social and community activities; to improve their quality of life; and to prevent further disadvantage. Equally we aim to continue to reduce crime and the fear of crime; increase and enable resident participation; and break down any remaining barriers and divides,

esource Centre by providing accessible, non-stigmatising activities and facilities that focus on the needs of low-income families and people experiencing exclusion and disadvantage. One of our main objectives is to lessen the age-related divides, which existed on the estate - mainly from a culture of blame and a history of youth-centred crime, fear and lack of trust. To do this we encourage community activities that involve all ages coming together, such as family Fun-days, barbecues, parties and community outings. I feel the main reason for our success is the ‘ownership’ of the project, not just by genuine resident-led project management, but also by actively involving our young people, our elected Youth Committee has its own Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and budget and has offered younger residents a genuine

In conclusion and as a personal note, the Resource Centre has changed lives and attitudes, being the project manager is the best job in the world, and I am extremely proud to be a part of it. We all work above and beyond our paid hours and go that extra mile to ensure the centre is a success. Watching people grow, develop and become empowered has been truly amazing, let’s hope we can continue for many years to come. Paula Spencer CEO/Manager

Canterbury Ghost Ghosts are around us at all times even now there is one standing just behind you there, can you feel the cold hand of his long dead body on your shoulder, No! Oh well best get a move on there is lots to see and not much time to see it. The first place we look at is just behind where you now stand, this attractively named off license now call “Discount Booze”. It was here some 8 months ago that some medical students lived and studied. It’s a perfect location really, when you think about it, an off license underneath, pub within staggering distance, close to the Hospital, and lots of retail therapy within easy reach! It may have been due to the feeling that everything was just so that they came up with the novel idea of , following a session down to local pub, to come back here in the early hours and make a Ouija board to contact the dead in their semi-drunken stupor it all made perfect sense. They did not have a board to hand so in haste they decided to make one, not hard

to do really, they took some old cardboard and drew a circle and wrote in the letters of the alphabet, and then north east south and west. Followed by the numbers 1 to 10 around the outside and then as a finishing touch they cut out the signs of the zodiac from the Daily Mail. They took their board to the kitchen on the top floor at the back, and used a kitchen tumbler as their makeshift communicator. Within seconds of lighting a tea light candle and touching the tumbler with their little fingers, they had made some contact. It is fair to say that using an Ouija board at any time can be very dangerous, but in a building like this that had been a pub for over 300 years before it became an off-license with all that had happened here was not a good idea, by any stretch of the imagination. They asked in a bold voice – “is there anybody there?” – Well in my experience if they return NO then you are going to have problems. The glass was jerked towards the YES, and then

Tours according to one of the students, whom I interviewed at length, they got a strange feeling of unhappiness and or misfortune, the lights in the landing flickered and then went out and the candle flame flickered before flaring up. They felt sure that this was a good sign, and proceeded to ask for a name, the reply was Abigail – no one in the room was called Abigail and none of the students knew anyone of that name, so on they pressed. “When were you born?” – The reply “1846”, “When did you die?” – “1873” – so she or it was 27. “How did you die?” – The answer here came as a shock to the students, “Joshua knows how!” – Joshua who lived with them in the house was away in London, and was studying oncology at the local hospital, but was not present at the séance. It did not make any sense – did she die of cancer? “They asked again – and the reply was just as strange – “David knows the place!” – David was getting nervous for he had during the first weeks in the house felt the presence of something on the stairs. But he had never told anyone else about the feeling for fear of being accused of being weird. His colleagues looked towards him for an explanation, but he could not give one. Then the glass leapt forward again and spelled out the name of a person who had visited them just that morning. “Peter Wilkes was here this morning and last Monday” it read – this meant that whatever this thing was it had been watching them for some time. The candle flared up again and then expired plunging the 4 of them into panic and darkness. David picked up the board and threw it out of the window, onto the flat roof below, where it still lies untouched but still a portal to the other side! Each locked their door to prevent entry by an unseen force. David claimed that he slept relatively soundly for an hour or two but was woken by the feeling of something sitting on his bed, a heavy man of some kind, in the darkness he wriggled out of the covers and felt his way down the bed but could not find anyone else in the room. Getting back into bed he pinched himself to confirm he was awake and again felt something pressing hard down on the bed. Thinking that this was his imagination he opened his eyes to find that the kitchen mirror usually located at the top of the stair well, was now floating above his head, and his reflection seemed clouded, he reached around the mirror to see if it was being held up by a wire, but as he looked he saw the face of an old gnarled woman staring blindly back at him - the face made him scream in terror, the noise not only woke his colleagues but cause the mirror to shatter covering him in shards of

broken glass. His fellow students tried in vain to open the locked door for over a minute before using a fire extinguisher to break the door down; by this time poor David had lost over a pint of blood. Being medically trained they knew exactly what to do – they called an ambulance and tried to stem the bleeding. David survived and was taken to Kent & Canterbury Hospital then transferred to East Grinstead Hospital for Skin Grafts to his face and chest. It was only a week after the incident that I was called in to investigate the alleged paranormal attack. Prior to going to the property I did my own research and discovered that during the summer of 1873 a young woman committed suicide on these premises. According to the local paper archives there was some suggestion that the husband who at that time was the landlord of what was then the Crown Inn, had taken to beating his wife under the statute known as the “rule of Thumb” which states that one can only beat your wife with a stick that is no wider than your thumb. She may well have been unhappy about this treatment but at the time there was no chance of divorce simply because your spouse beat you upyou needed a reason. The story was that she (Abigail Peterson) took her own life, following an attempted suicide the previous year, when she had stood on a stool in the top room (there – shine a torch to the top Kent’s Local Intruder Alarm & CCTV Specialist

The following year she was more successful this time she tied a rope off at the top of the stair well – let’s take a closer look – the other end she had pre-tied in a noose and placed this over her head, Then she perched herself on the banister and jumped down the stairwell, pulling her husband’s straight razor across her throat as she jumped the downward force was enough to rip her head from her shoulders, and the headless corpse landed on the first bend of the stairs. Her husband returning from his duties in the pub downstairs at 11pm tripped over the body of his headless wife on the stairs and beat her in anger assuming her to be drunk or asleep, and feeling remorse she bent down to kiss her – not a good move if she did not have a

Call Samaritans when life gets too much Most people face difficult times in their lives. Times when they feel very low. Times when their troubles seem overwhelming. Times of complete despair. Times when the future looks hopeless. Times when they feel they have no one to turn to. Over sixty years ago in the east end of London, a man called Chad Varah attended the funeral of a 14 year old girl who had taken her own life because she believed she had a disease. In fact, what she thought was a disease was her first period. Nobody had told her about the changes her body would go through as she grew older. From this tragic story sprang Samaritans - the first organisation anywhere in the world dedicated to listening to troubled people. Today, it is mainly a telephone-based service, though you can make an appointment to visit your local branch to meet a Samaritan face to face or you can e-mail.
Chad Varah and his early helpers set down some golden rules about how Samaritans should operate. The same rules apply today. • You will not be judged - Samaritans are there to talk through whatever is upsetting you. • You will not be asked to give any personal details. • No calls are recorded. • Samaritans is not an advice line. It is there to help you by being a confidential, friendly, listening voice. • The Samaritans telephone line is open 24 hours a day, every single day of the year. There is one other golden rule. Samaritans is open to all. Anyone can call Samaritans. It does not matter your age, sex, nationality, race, colour, religion, sexual orientation, political beliefs or anything else. All you need to do is call and a Samaritan will listen.

Kent Basketball team win again Kent Crusaders made it six wins in a row in Division 1 with a 93-58 win over Hemel Storm on Saturday afternoon at Brompton Academy. Crusaders used a 20-5 third quarter run to pull away and put in a dominant second half, where they held Storm to 23, less than their entire output in the first quarter (26). Tolu Akomolafe had a 21 point, 13 rebound double double to lead Crusaders, with Josh Steel having 16, Reis Pinnock 13 and Akwasi Yeboah 12. “Today was a valuable teaching lesson for us,” said Kent Head Coach Lloyd Gardner. “In the first half we didn’t play with the energy and desire that we’re used to. However, the second half showed us that when we do have those characteristics we can be a very difficult and dangerous team to play against. “We also had some good step up performances today. bench gave us a great lift and contribution on the glass, Reis Pinnock also had another strong game as he is growing in confidence every week.” A slow start in the first quarter saw neither teams be able to gain an edge until Storm got a four point cushion to finish the period. The second saw Crusaders regain the lead as the teams traded baskets in a seesaw affair. A 6-0 run to end out the quarter, led by Tola, saw Crusaders hold a 38-35 lead at the halftime break. In the third period was where Kent asserted their dominance on the game, controlling both ends of the floor to gain a big enough advantage they wouldn’t give up the rest of the way. Kent will look to make it seven in a row when they take on Bradford Dragons on Saturday 24th at 8pm at Brompton Academy, before facing NASSA at UEL on Sunday (4pm).

Motorway Rescue Canterbury rugby players and staff were involved in a dramatic rescue on the M26 as the team was returning from the league game at Henley. A car in front of the team coach hit the central barrier and swerved across the carriageways trapping two people inside. The car ended up on its side in the slow lane of the motorway and physiotherapist Kevin Gee and players Tom Best, who is a fireman, and Royce Cadman went to the rescue. Together with another off-duty fireman who had stopped to help they succesfully worked at freeing a man and a woman from the badly damaged vehicle.
“The occupants were lucky to get out relatively unscathed as it was a dangerous situation for the rescuers. It was dark, our lads were working in the slow lane of the motorway with traffic still passing. There was steam coming from what was left of the engine bay and there seemed to me a very real risk of the car catching alight. The three of them did us proud.”
RAF funding flies at Canterbury A Service charity, injured players and a local hospice have all benefited from fund raising efforts by Canterbury Rugby Club.
Team Manager Andy Rogers said: “It was a harrowing scene and freeing the occupants from the car took some doing as the car was badly compressed at the front end.
The biggest cheque went to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund after a pre-match auction and raffle at the league game against Cambridge raised £2500.
“After a lot of pushing, pulling and gentle persuasion the first of the occupants emerged - a man with chest pains but thankfully alive.
The day was dedicated to the memory of a remarkable Second World War flying hero and Canterbury player, Wing Commander Commander Peter Ayerst DFC who died aged 93 in 2014.
Royce Cadman and Fireman Best were then up on the side of car easing open the driver’s door so that Kevin Gee could gently ease the lady free. Both were bruised and in shock and were taken on to the team coach to keep warm while they waited for the police and ambulance service.

Paul Hewson, the RAFBF’s South of England director said: “There is little doubt Peter would have been very touched by the tribute which succeeded in recalling his exemplary bravery during the war and his passion for the game of rugby. He would undoubtedly have approved of the support to the fund which is the RAF’s leading welfare charity and still provides financial, practical and emotional support to members of the RAF family in their time of need, just as it did during WWII. The day itself was a spectacular success in both providing a stirring tribute to a true hero and making a substantial contribution to the fund. Wing Commander Peter Ayerst DFC we salute you! “ Canterbury’s immediate past chairman, Giles Hilton said: ‘It is very important that a club who needs the support of others to survive should help charities which support our exservicemen and women.” The RAFB was not the only organisation to benefit from the work of Canterbury members and players. Local cyclist John Corrigan made the RFU Injured Players Foundation his project in 2014. Apart from the hundreds of sponsored miles he covered on his bike, John’s collections at Canterbury games enabled him to far exceed his target and hand over £2,100 to the Foundation. In January a cheque for £500 was presented to the local Pilgrims Hospice, the result of club players braving the freezing waters in a charity swim at Whitstable. Canterbury’s strong and long lasting links with the armed forces, in particular the Army regiments based in the city, have been reflected in major fund raising for Help For Heroes, Combat Stress and the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Benevolent Fund. End of the paper driving licence After the demise of the paper tax disc this year, from 1 January this year the DVLA no longer issued paper counterparts to photocard driving licences. However, there are fears that the licensing agency would not have its replacement online service ready in time and that the change could open people up to online fraud. Car rental companies currently use the paper part of a driving licence to verify customer identities, but the online service that will be used in place of this system may not be ready for the changeover at New Year. Instead, companies will be obliged to use a premium rate phone number to perform the same function, which could lead to delays and higher prices for customers renting cars. The telephone service costs 51 pence per minute, which is likely to be passed on to customers. Drivers can access their DVLA records online without charge and a similar service is set to be launched for car rental agencies, but there are fears that this service will not be in place by 1 January. In the meantime, customers can choose to share their driver records online via a smartphone or by printing off the same details for rental agencies. The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), is particularly concerned about the timing of the move, which could
affect holidaymakers trying to hire cars over the festive period. The association is also concerned that driver details can easily be falsified using the alternative print off system. Furthermore, the DVLA has issued a warning about online fraudsters who issue emails requesting people to verify their driving licences by clicking on a link. Those who do, could allow fraudsters access to their bank details and other personal information, leaving them open to theft and identity fraud. The message purports to be from the DVLA but the agency has warned anyone receiving these emails to delete them immediately. Along with ceasing to issue paper counterparts with new licences, the DVLA says that existing paper driving licence counterparts can be destroyed as they will no longer serve any purpose. Drivers using pre-1998 driving licences which are paper only can keep using these until they need to update their details, such as name and address, or renew their licence for any other reason. The abolition of the paper licence is part of the same shake up that saw the paper tax disc phased out this year, in a move to save the DVLA millions of pounds in administration costs.

The Canterbury Accordion Social Club is made up of accordion players of all levels from beginners to graded players who bring along all types of accordions including melodeons. The club has been going for over 25 years and the evening meetings are good fun and include a tea or coffee break. We play a variety of music and if you wish to play a solo or duet with others then you can do so; no problem if you do not want to, you can join in with the group to try our music. We provide a book of music to those that decide to join our group. Anyone is welcome to come along to talk to us and listen to us before playing along. For more experienced players we also have a small subgroup within the group that enjoy occasionally playing at a variety of venues around Canterbury. Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday evenings of each month starting at 7.30pm (we usually get there about 7.15pm) at Newport Court, Cowdrey Place, Canterbury CT1 3PB. Parking facilities are available. We have members that live in Dover, Thanet, Whitstable and Canterbury so come along from wherever you are. Please telephone Audrey on 01227 780245 to chat about our group; or simply come along on a Tuesday evening. Please mention

Making the Pennies Go further It’s a sad fact of life that we’re living in an age where our expenditures and our incomes are tightly contested. People from all walks of life are pinching the pennies and trying to make their hard earned cash go further.
Over the next few issues we’ll look at some ways to save money by making small changes to our buying choices. It’s the simple things that can make the difference and the way we spend money can often be habitual in the way we shop and consume.
Car Insurance Unfortunately we all have to pay insurance; it’s a yearly ritual that we all dread doing. Insurance is never as straight forward as it looks and although strictly regulated by the FCA it still appears as ‘clear as mud’ for ‘Joe public’ as far as the small print and terms and conditions. Quite often we never look at the renewals that we are sent through or we set them aside and put them on the “to do list”. We have been blessed in recent years with the comparison sites that do all the hard work for us, searching hundreds of websites for the best deals for us. What we need to remember is that the Insurance companies all have individual underwriters that stipulate the terms and conditions for the policies we buy, it’s always worth using a few different comparison sites as they will search different companies. Mileage, usage, driver age, claims history the list is endless for the risk factors that they will take in to consideration. The secret to keeping your insurance cost down without being deceitful and breaking the law is to accurately record information. Mileage is a key factor in risk, quite often people vastly over estimate their mileage a good way to estimate your mileage is to take 36

a weekly average and multiply by 52, this will give you a fair estimate for the year. Is your spouse or partner on the policy? Quite often there is a discount if they are added, some underwriters will see this as a lower risk as the couple both have an financial interest in the vehicle and if there is a lower risk on long journeys if driving responsibility can be shared so don’t shy away from adding them to the quote in fear of the premium going up. Named drivers on the policy can increase the price of the policy dramatically; it’s always worth looking at how often they use the vehicle, if their only using it very occasionally then it may be worth adding them on when you need them by using “Temporary Driver Cover” it’s always worth checking . Another fact that is quite often over looked is that having fully comprehensive insurance can be cheaper than third Party , this is because higher risk drivers like young drivers, bad drivers or drivers with claims or convictions have often opted for this option thus making it a higher risk in the eyes of the underwriter. The key is to plan in advance, but remember that most quotes are only valid for a certain period so it’s best to start looking a couple of weeks before your renewal.
