UKC’s Professor Gurnah selected for Booker Prize Judging Panel “Stories capture us and entangle us for all time” from Desertion by Abdulrazak Gurnah Born in Zanzibar in 1948, Booker Prize shortlisted author and Professor of English at the University of Kent, Abdulrazak Gurnah has been selected as one of the 5 members of the judging panel for this year’s Man Booker Prize. As a novelist himself, Professor Gurnah’s Paradise made the Booker Prize shortlist in 1994, and he told me that, “One of the many things that interest me as a novelist is the idea of being somebody who occupies, imaginatively, a culture and society, but lives in another one”. “Over the past 5 or 6 decades we have seen large scale migration from the South of the world to the North, and as a writer, one of the things that interests me is the kind of negotiations that a person or a consciousness has to make to manage this process, and the consequences of it. But it’s not just about difficulties. It’s not just about tensions or anxieties. It’s about other things; what you keep alive, what you retain, what you make use of, and what you can add to where you are”

are submitted by publishers. They will then meet regularly to discuss the nominations, and by July this year they will agree on a longlist of the 12 strongest books. After this, they will re-read all of these 12 longlisted books, and then in due course, announce a shortlist of the best 5 or 6, before finally agreeing on the book which the panel believes is the strongest submission of the year, and the winner of the Man Booker Prize. It is a lengthy process which involves a lot of reading and a lot of consultation, but Professor Gurnah told me what an honour it was to be selected as a judge on the panel. He told me, “it is a small group of people who all get to read the best books that were published during the year, so it will be very interesting and it was a great pleasure to be asked”. Professor Gurnah’s last novel, The Last Gift, was published in 2011, but happily this will not be his last gift to us; his next novel (the title of which is still a closely guarded secret) is now finished and with his publisher, and is set to be on shelves in 2017.

This idea of dislocation is a theme which very much interests Professor Gurnah, and it is often explored within his own writing. However, he stresses that “dislocation doesn’t always have to be a destructive thing; it has its consequences, its problems and its concerns, but it also has a tragic side to it, which is how people are perceived, as well as how they are able to accept these new circumstances in their lives”. The judging for this year’s Man Booker Prize is still at its earliest stage, with the process having started in January. Each publisher is only allowed to submit 2 entries, and often the authors do not even know whether or not their novel has been submitted. Professor Gurnah told me, “when Paradise was shortlisted, the first I even heard about it being submitted was not from the publisher, but from a book seller about a month or so before the shortlist announcement was made, who asked me if I knew!”. This year’s Man Booker Prize panel is made up of 5 judges who will read all of the books which 4

Canterbury Lions Club

Walking for Health

The Canterbury Lions Club (Registered Charity No 1003401) was founded over 50 years ago, and received its Charter from Lions Club International on 24th September 1965.

Only a third of adults in the UK are active enough, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. We’ve done this with great success for over 14 years now, improving thousands of lives.

Over recent months it has been able to make donations totalling £8681 from its fund raising activities, the major beneficiaries being Cobbes Meadow RDA of Chatham (£2000), Catching Lives (£500), The John Graham Trust of Blean (£500), Kent MS Therapy Centre (£455), Challenger Troop CIC (£400), SNAPP (£400), East Kent Pilgrims Hospices (£374), and Age UK Canterbury (£318). Many other organisations and charities have also benefited from smaller amounts. The Club purchased and provided an electric mobility scooter for a local disabled person quite recently, and in early January it donated £1000 to The Lions Club in the North of England to help them with those unfortunate people devastated by the severe flooding in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire who desperately required financial help. Our club has only been able to offer these donations because of the tremendous support from members of the local community who always give so generously to our fund raising events and supermarket collections, so on behalf of those we have been able to assist and our club members, our sincere and grateful thanks to everyone. Lion Tony Clark (Club Treasurer and Trustee)

Our walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable people, specially trained for the job. Along with fellow walkers, our walk leaders provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that’s right for them. In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, wellbeing and confidence. From what our walkers tell us, there’s also plenty of laughter to be heard on our walks. Together the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support run Walking for Health. By sharing our walking and health expertise, we support hundreds of local schemes across England to offer short, free walks. Our aim is to help more people – including those affected by cancer – discover the joys and health benefits of walking. To find out about your local walks visit the Walking for Health website and enter your postcode into the walk finder at www.walkingforhealth.co.uk /walkfinder

The Kent Museum of Freemasonry A new exhibition at the Kent Museum of Freemasonry celebrates the historical cooperation between Canterbury Cathedral and the county’s Masons. At the opening of the exhibition, Museum Curator, Tony Periton said “Through a variety of displays, this exhibition showcases the connections between the Cathedral’s operative stonemasons and our fraternity. Many people visit Canterbury Cathedral and admire its craftsmanship not realising the masonic connections in the two resplendent windows in the Chapter House and the Martyrdom dating from 1896 and 1954.” Head of Conservation at Canterbury Cathedral, Heather Newton commented: “The Cathedral Stonemasonry and Conservation team is grateful to the Freemasons for their generous support for apprentice training and stone fabric repair over many years. The exhibition allows us the opportunity to celebrate this and to give the public an insight into our craft.”

Canterbury Accordion Social Club The Canterbury Accordion Social Club has been meeting for over 25 years now and currently holds two get togethers in Canterbury on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings of each month commencing at 7.30pm and usually finishing around 9.30pm. We meet in the lounge of Newport Court, Cowdrey Place, off the Old Dover Road, Canterbury, CT1 3PB, and there are plenty of parking spaces available. Players of all types of accordions are welcome and of any ability. It helps to read music but it is not essential; we have players that do not and they play their versions of the music. We have a club book packed with music that has evolved over the years and includes most genres of music.

We start the evenings with a ‘warm up’ of pieces from our club book; members are emailed or contacted before each session so they can practise these pieces (if they want to!). After this, anyone that wants to play a solo or a duet is welcome to do so; we might have a 10/15 minute workshop where we all play a piece of music to the instructions that a member feels will make the piece more presentable and to get us all playing together. The evenings are to enjoy playing the accordion and they include a tea/coffee break after which we all play pieces from our book or any new tunes that members bring along. Some of our members play as a smaller group at local homes, summer events and occasionally at organised events in Canterbury City Centre. Why not come along one evening and join in or listen to us, all for the princely sum of £1.50 per evening, including refreshments. Small Group Tuition with Bright Young Things Growing classroom sizes and rigid curricula make it increasingly difficult for schools to ensure every child receives the education they need. For some, not enough time is spent on the basics, leading to a lack of solid foundations in core subjects. For others, the absence of a two-way conversation leads to a loss of verbal eloquence or, worse, a lack of interest.

Bright Young Things, 26 Watling St, Canterbury, CT1 2UD

Individualised learning is championed at sixth form and in further education, so why shouldn’t children benefit from the same level of academic support during their early informative years? Studies have shown that small group sessions enable interaction and maintain engagement, and with time to devote to each child, teachers can ensure that everyone has a solid grasp of the important principles. As limited government funding makes it near-impossible to implement changes in schools, tuition centres like Bright Young Things are stepping in to shore up the gaps and reignite children’s natural love of learning. By keeping class numbers down, tutors ensure that every child learns at the right speed and that they develop the confidence to think critically and independently. Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre offers high-quality supplementary education from 6 years right the way up to A Levels. As well as being experts in 11 plus exam preparation, we also run a daily Maths & English Members Club (ages 6 to 12), provide GCSE and A level tuition, and offer holiday workshops in creative writing, debating, problem solving and more. Importantly, we organise regular mock exams. Our courses aim to provide students with the tools to think independently and analytically. We encourage our students to aim high, help them discover their true potential, and work to maximise their exam success. Bright Young Things is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 7.30pm. All our tutors are highly-experienced and DBS-checked. We are OFSTED registered and accept childcare vouchers. We offer free initial assessments with full analytical feedback, to map your child's current level and create a tailor-made programme to suit you.

In the early 1990s, Andrew Hall’s friend bought him a cassette of Rockabilly music which was to be the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He instantly fell in love with the music, and since then, Andrew, a.k.a DJ Reverend Boogie, has been jiving, DJing, and teaching jive dancing. As an accomplished dancer himself, he has won a number of awards including winner of the Jive/Swing dance competitions at both the Hemsby Rock and Roll Weekender and the Great Yarmouth Swing Weekender.

www.communityad.co.uk

n i v i J Andrew now teaches two classes in the Canterbury area, and I had the pleasure of attending one at Bramley’s Big Apple at the club on Orange Street. The evening began with an hour long class where Andrew (along with the help of another accomplished dancer, Teri Johns) demonstrated a number of techniques, and got everybody involved, learning and having fun.

in Canterbury After the class, the evening opened up into a free dance session where everybody could get involved and jive away to the fantastic Quarter Notes band, fronted by the extremely talented vocalist / double bassist Serena Sykes, guitarist Jim Knowler, drummer Seb Romer, and keyboard player Andrew Hedges. Between sets, Andrew Hall kept the vibe going with a DJ set of rock ‘n’ roll and swing tracks, while the crowd continued dancing the night away.

As well as running classes Andrew has also organised regular dances in London (The Blue Dahlia and Shanghai Lil’s), dances and vintage/ retro fairs in Folkestone at The Grand, The Bank Bar, The Harp, The Southcliff Hotel and The Office Bar. He now runs two extremely popular jive dance classes in Canterbury for people of all ages and all abilities, so no matter if you’re an accomplished dancer, or you have two left feet (like me!), why not pop along and experience a night of jive?

Canterbury and District Netball League We are now approaching the end of the fourth decade of the Canterbury and District Netball League. Formed in 1977 following a tournament to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, Don and Margaret Ansted established the league which began on 21st October 1977. In that first season University Staff won Division 1 and Christchurch won Division 2. The league has been based in a number of locations across Canterbury, and the Sunday morning fixtures now take place at Birley’s playing fields next to the Level Crossing on St Stephens Road. Don and Margaret Ansted were instrumental in not just establishing the league but ensuring it ran smoothly on a weekly basis. Don chaired the league for many years whilst Margaret was an active player and official. Don also joining her on the side lines as a qualified umpire and taking an active role in umpire training and testing. In their later years, both Don and Margaret drew back from their more active roles, but kept their involvement in the league accepting positions of league presidents. It is their commitment to inclusion, whatever ability or age, that gives this league its strong foundation.

team entering the CDNL in the 2014-15 season. Back to Netball is a gentle re-introduction for ladies that may have enjoyed the game at school but not played since. The friendly sessions cater for all abilities and welcome new ladies weekly. For more information about the Canterbury sessions contact Lilianne Widdows l.widdows@hotmail.co.uk. For Herne Bay contact Kayleigh Weatherly k19wev@yahoo.co.uk.

We lost Don on 18 August 2006, and in his memory we contest annually for the Don Ansted Cup. Margaret remains our president and still runs the Canterbury team.

In April 2014 we hosted an event to celebrate more than 35 years of Netball in the area. The morning highlights included a mash up competition that combined players from different teams, a showcase fixture between two juniors teams and a session for Back to Netballers, topped off with two competitive finals in the Cup and Plate competition.

Another success is the strong connection to the Back to Netball sessions that take place in the District. Canterbury Back to Netball has been coached by league committee member and player Lilanne Widdows since 2008. Throughout that period a number of teams have been created, some of which have gone onto achieve success as league and cup winners.

This year, the 2015-16 season has two divisions, with 7 teams in Division One, and 8 teams in Division Two. New teams are welcomed each season as are individual players who can register as floaters to fill in for existing teams and perhaps eventually sign for them. We find this works well particularly if ladies are new to the area and keen to join a team midway through the season.

A new Back to Netball session began in May 2014 coached by another league player Kayleigh Weatherly. The sessions in Herne Bay extended the Netball offer across the district resulting in another

In addition to the adult netball on offer, there are also two junior clubs in the area offering coaching to what we hope will be the next generation of CDNL players.

The Canterbury Festival Foundation Bursary Competition The Canterbury Festival Foundation Bursary Competition has grown in popularity each year since its inception in 2010, and 2015 was its most impressive year to date. The competition exists to support excellence in talented young musicians across East Kent, and has two categories. The Junior category offers professional performance experience for musicians aged 12-14, with the Senior musicians aged 15-18 competing for the cash bursary. The winner, announced each year at the annual Bursary concert as part of the main Canterbury Festival programme, also becomes the Festival’s Ambassador for the Arts, developing skills in leading workshops alongside performing in various Festival events throughout the year. The 2015 winner, harpist Emily Hopper, is a student at St Edmund’s in Canterbury. She will be working closely with the Festival throughout the year, and using the bursary prize to further her harp tuition and experience. The competition is now open to applicants. All About the Groove: Project F Now entering their third year, Canterbury / Whitstable based soul and funk band, Project F, are taking the local music scene by storm. The band got together after lead guitarist Campbell Gourlay placed an advert online seeking out like-minded musicians looking to form a group playing soul, jazz and funk music. Following a few changes to the line up, the band finally settled on Ginger Bennett on lead vocals and percussion, Lawrence Fletcher on saxophone, Martin Goldsmith on keys, Baz Burbank (a.k.a Seb Romer) on bass, Matt Webber on Drums, and of course Campbell Gourlay on guitar. Project F are all about the groove! Their repertoire includes their own arrangements of some well known classic 70s soul, dirty funk, and jazz, as well

as some much lesser known songs and 12 inch versions, all of which are guaranteed to get you dancing the night away. You’ll recognise songs, but played in a completely new, original and fun way by these masters of funk. The band are also currently working on a collection of all original music, so you can look forward to hearing this at some of their forthcoming gigs. The funky sextet always put on a great show, with regular gigs at the Neptune and Pearsons Arms in Whitstable. They’ve also opened for Geno Washington at the Horesebridge Theatre, and make regular appearances in Canterbury and Thanet, getting the crowds dancing away at places such as Dreamland and the Margate Jazz Festival. So if you would like to attend one of Project F’s gigs, or if you would like to book the band for your own private function, please visit them online at www.projectf.co or search for “Project F” on Facebook. You wont be disappointed!

400th birthday weeke Celebrate the 400th Birthday of Chilham Castle in grand style over the weekend of 20-22 May. With the Castle’s strong links to Shakespeare, it is fitting that the Globe Theatre on Tour will stage The Two Gentlemen of Verona, outdoors, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Castle and its grounds. 2016 is also the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the year will feature many performance of his works throughout the UK - but few as quirky and interesting as this World Premiere which opens its national tour in Kent. Chilham Castle’s connections to the Bard run deep - its first owner Sir Dudley Digges was an associate of the playwright, while his uncle Leonard Digges wrote a preface for the

First Folio of Shakespeare’s works. Dudley’s stepfather was (amazingly) the overseer of Shakespeare’s Will in which he famously bequeathed his “second best bed” to his wife! There are also architectural similarities between the Globe Theatre’s design and the Castle’s hollow-core polygon which will ensure that the visiting actors feel very much at home. It seems that Sir Dudley Digges had the foresight to plan this celebratory weekend 400 years ago. The Chilham Chase was his bequest, stating that the castle should host a race, each May. The race was for ‘Gentlemen and Maidens of good character from Chilham and surrounding parishes’ with a prize of £10. In honour of Sir Dudley, the Chilham Chase 400 will take place on Saturday 21 May at 1.30pm and the winning team will receive £100. The 2.5 mile

nd for Chilham Castle fun run incorporates fancy dress, jumping horse hurdles, a sack race and much more. There will also be a prize for the best costume. Entries will cost £10 per team of 2 members up. So whether you prefer to come and watch high quality theatre, or run around the grounds of the Castle in fancy dress, the weekend will have entertainment for all. Don’t forget to listen out at 11am on Sunday 22 May, as Sir Dudley also directed that the Chilham church bells should be rung in celebration of his birthday!

Programme of events for the Chilham Chase 400 Friday 20 May 7pm: Opening performance of The Two Gentlemen of Verona Saturday 21 May 10am: Gates open. Stalls, Musicians, food and drink 1.30pm: The Chilham Chase 7pm: Performance of The Two Gentlemen of Verona Please note that the Stage area and the auditorium will be closed between 4.30-6pm for rehearsal time. Canterbury Round Table Canterbury Round Table is a social network, charity and members organisation for men under 45 years old, and the club has been in existence since 1946. Members meet twice a month to organise events and activities, fund raise, and take part in general community benefit work. Canterbury is one of thousands of clubs all over the globe making Round Table one of the largest meeting networks in the world. In Canterbury, the club is structured as a registered charity and we undertake a range of activities to benefit local charities and communities in need. In 2015, the Canterbury Round Table: • raised funds to support Canterbury Wheelchair Rugby, helping severely disabled people into an active sporting and social community through sports • helped a family in severe distress after the loss of the father and breadwinner • delivered Lord Mayors parcels to those in need at Christmas • dedicated our time and efforts into regenerating the Orchard Project at Simon Langton Girls School • supported a range of projects that will contribute to cancer research and individuals who are suffering from social isolation.

30

Please mention

The majority of our fundraising comes from organising events such as Fireworks on the Farm, charity dinners and rattling tins for event such as Children in Need (which we helped raise over £27,000 in 2015). The club is also a very active social network and we do a lot of activities throughout the year for the benefit and enjoyment of our members, from gliding to cricket, shooting, golf, skiing, quizzes, bike rides and runs (Saxon Shore) and meals. Canterbury is also a very active European club. In 2015 we hosted a major event where 12 European clubs (over 100 people) came to our city to be hosted for a weekend of activities and events. This coming summer we will be heading to the north of Finland to be hosted for mid summers. The club is always welcoming to people who are interested in finding out more and seeing if they are interested in membership. More details available via our Facebook page which is also a great way to contact us.

Kent Coast Theatre Whitstable has long been celebrated for its annual events and activities, plus a very vibrant live music scene and quirky visual arts. With the ever popular Oyster Festival, the historic Carnival, the fantastic Harbour Day and now Whit Lit, this town leads the way in Kent for creativity and culture. KCT, a new contemporary theatre company, based right here in Whitstable, aims to compliment and work alongside all these events and add to the unique fabric in this very eclectic town. Founded in July 2015 by Lou Fowkes and Alison Mead, KCT aims to champion new writing, challenge and re-work traditional plays, perform in interesting and non-theatre spaces, but above all, offer local actors the chance to perform in a professional environment, working to a high level of expertise, with advice, support and guidance. We are delighted to welcome as our Patron for KCT, Whitstable resident and acclaimed actor of theatre, film, TV and radio Raymond Coulthard. KCT ran its first Acting Course in the Autumn of 2015 at Whitstable Castle. The ten weeks covered theatre disciplines such as performance skills, text work, improvisation, physical and vocal techniques, character building and Commedia. The group of fifteen actors then presented selected scenes

from well-known plays at a Showcase Evening at The Horsebridge in front of an invited audience of friends and family. The reaction and response from the audience on the night was truly overwhelming and immensely positive. KCT will continue to offer these workshops throughout the year, in order to develop our actor’s technique in theatre performance. We will also link up with schools, colleges, groups and associations in the East Kent area to fully engage with the local community. We will provide a variety of plays with high production values, whilst giving our audiences diverse community led pieces, that will involve group work, building a close company willing to push the boundaries of community theatre at its best. We are delighted that The Horsebridge will be our ‘home’, as we feel it is the perfect place for KCT and thank them for their kind support. Our debut production for KCT, to be performed at The Horsebridge in July will be Animal Farm, written by George Orwell in 1945. Reflecting the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, it is a challenging and thought-provoking piece of theatre. The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Sally Waters attended the opening of the new theatre and said, “KCT is offering fantastic opportunities, not just for the local Whitstable community, but also for the wider community, including all people of all ages and abilities.” If you would like to get involved with KCT, please visit them online at www.kentcoasttheatre.co.uk, or search for Kent Coast Theatre on Facebook.

A Winter’s Tale of Walking Football On a dark winter’s night just over a year ago, a handful of senior gentlemen assembled on an all-weather football pitch in Canterbury. Their mission? To play walking football. That night the foundations of CWFC (Canterbury Walking Football Club) were laid. CWFC is a club where both ladies and men can come and enjoy the beautiful game, irrespective of experience, fitness level or ability and have some fun. Yes we all enjoy football and want to improve our fitness, but the best bit is the fun and banter, with all our new friends. To see that you only have to look at the profile page on our website at www.canterburywalkingfootball.co.uk. A lot has happened since that first dark winter’s night. In addition to our regular Friday evening session, we have introduced TTNC (Two Touch No Contact) on a Monday evening, which is an even more gentle and subtle approach to the game, played indoors. It is perfect for beginners, those recovering from injuries or wanting to get fit.

In December, we held our first social event; a Christmas meal with our partners so that everyone could put faces to the various names. It was a truly wonderful night. We have 2 weekly sessions available: • Monday evenings (Northgate Ward Community Centre) from 6 to 7pm. A structured session including physical warm up, technical session and a short game of two touch, no contact walking football. £4 per session. • Friday evenings (Canterbury Cricket Ground) from 5.30. You can enjoy an hour and a half of casually competitive walking football. £4 per session. So if you are over 50, male or female, looking to keep fit, possibly interested in refereeing, looking for a laugh and to meet new people, we would love to see you at one of our sessions. New players are always welcome so why not come along and give it a go…and the first session is free! Visit our website for more information and contact details www.canterburywalkingfootball.co.uk

A South East walking football league was formed, including towns such as Sandwich, Margate, Herne Bay, Folkestone, Medway and Tonbridge. Additional tournaments were played throughout the year, and it has been mooted that international matches could be played in 2016.
