Train your brain at Bright Young Things
Summer….. Sun, sea and, for many children, exams. Although it is important not to put too much pressure on children, passing exams is important, to get into first-choice schools, obtain university places, and, ultimately, secure worthwhile employment. As our children prepare for the Kent Test, SATs, GCSEs and A Levels, Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is here to support and stretch young minds.

We run weekly courses throughout the year, from Small Group Maths & English, 11 Plus courses, one-to-one GCSE and A Level tuition, and university interview preparation assistance. For Year 5 students looking to sit the Kent Test, the summer holidays are a crucial time, and we've designed a special timetable for this period, with mock assessments and revision workshops running throughout the week. Of course, our holiday timetable isn’t aimed solely at Year 5s. We know school holidays can be a logistical nightmare for parents, and we are pleased to be able to help alleviate some of the strain with our daily Brain Gym sessions, running from 9am to 4pm, which keep children’s minds active and ensure their literacy and numeracy skills continue to develop. We also run a series of weekly workshops, in creative writing, philosophy, and debating, and dramatic storytelling sessions for younger children. Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is committed to providing children with the confidence and ability to think independently and analytically. We like to create enjoyable learning experiences and our friendly approach encourages children to ask questions and become fully involved in their bespoke programmes, thus taking ownership of topics and gaining in confidence. Canterbury MG Owners Workshop/Club CMGOW was formed in October of 2014 by three MG enthusiasts and friends. The remit for the club from the outset was to be a little different from other single marque and classic car clubs; different, in as much as the club offers support and guidance with verbal workshops to MG enthusiasts about keeping their classics on the road, plus having a national affiliation to the three national MG organisations - MG Owners Club, MG Car Club and the MG Octagon Club. As a result, the three friends are actually the three area secretaries for the national organisations for the Canterbury area and this club. In addition to the affiliations, CMGOW also has an informal association with the newly opened MG main dealer in Canterbury Northgate MG. Currently, the club has approximately 55 members and has enjoyed a couple of runs out with a lot more to follow. The main aim of the monthly meetings are centred on workshop themes with guest speakers giving advice on everything MG, from early MGs, MGB engine repairs / rebuilds, to body work advice. In addition to this, we have had members going out to give free assistance to other members with their MG projects, which clearly saves money and helps to keep more MGs on the road. A parts for sale or swap book is available to members to help cut costs, and there
is a crate of MG manuals to refer to in order to sort particular problems out. The club is currently considering supporting a local charity and will, where possible, help with any fund raising. The pub we use for the meetings (The Old Gate Inn) is very friendly and very supportive of the club, and gives us a separate area for the meeting. Car parking is not a problem as we have a separate area for the MGs so that they are safe, and this will be the starting point for the coming year’s runs. Membership to the club is free and meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at The Granville, at the top end of New Dover Road, Canterbury, CT1 3EL, starting at 8pm. New members are always given a warm welcome; you do not need to own an MG to be a member, but must have a passion for MGs, either new or old. The three area secretaries are: Adrian Goodson (MGOC), Alan Hall (Octagon Club) and John Clark (MGCC). If you would like more information about the club, please contact Adrian on 01227 861077 (before 7pm please). Alternatively, you can contact Northgate MG who will have information on this unique club.

Walking for health Only a third of adults in the UK are active enough, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. We’ve done this with great success for over 14 years now, improving thousands of lives. Our walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable people, specially trained for the job. Along with fellow walkers, our walk leaders provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that’s right for them. In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, well-being and confidence. From what our walkers tell us, there’s also plenty of laughter to be heard on our walks.
Together the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support run Walking for Health. By sharing our walking and health expertise, we support hundreds of local schemes across England to offer short, free walks. Our aim is to help more people – including those affected by cancer – discover the joys and health benefits of walking. To find out about your local walks visit the Walking for Health website and enter your postcode into the walk finder.

Canterbury Touch
Canterbury Touch have developed very dynamically over a short time, turning from a social 6 weeks a year ‘Rugby club’ to a 3 times a week all year round Touch club competing in England Touch Associations (NGB) National Touch Series. Within 3 years they have managed to achieve and produce the following: • 16 England representative players including 8 open & 6 U18 players • Over 500 social players • 150 league players • Over 1400 school players • 2 Secondary schools have placed it into their curriculum • 24 Level 1 coaches • 22 Level 1 Referees • A winning under 18mixed National schools team • NTS and DTS squads 18
Please mention
The president Tom Humphreys is keen to share what has worked well for the club to help others with their development of Touch. ‘My aim was to develop an NTS team which had home grown players, so I looked to schools to start my plan. 4 Years ago Touch was pretty new to Kent and had never had the coverage that local Rugby clubs needed to see the benefits of the game for their off season fitness and skill sets. Southern hemisphere contact players grow up playing Touch and then often play in their off season and without a doubt become much smarter and tactical players in doing so. I was tired of hearing ex-contact players saying they play ‘Touch Rugby’: ‘yeah we always warm up with Touch before a training session’, then watching them hit crash Magazine when responding to advertisements

balls, slow the game down and burn out after 5 minutes of being on the pitch when placed into a properly refereed and run Touch game. Actually NO they had never played the game, similar concept but a totally different experience once played properly. So I thought to myself instead of trying to teach old dogs new tricks I need to start afresh and find enthusiastic open minded players not corrupted by other disciples with the simplistic mentality of im big so I can smash through that space!
just develop their knowledge even more. I also ensured sportivate participants received a Canterbury Touch Tshirt which helped to promote the club and gave them a little incentive. After piloting this we are now rolling it out into other local school both secondary and primary. We have future plans to help schools asses players in Touch for GCSE PE, for example we plan to produce a Player Touch booklet which helps players learn rules, plays, refereeing, fitness and map individual progression.
I set about looking for some funding focused at school aged players. I found this in the form of Sportivate funding. With many thanks to the ‘Kent sport team’ I put an application in to receive funding to send coaches into Simon Langton Boys School who, luckily, had some forward thinking PE teachers who could foresee the development of skills their rugby players would gain from Touch. Little did they know 8 of their pupils were good enough to represent England! I also developed some teacher resources and ran training for the PE staff at the school, sharing knowledge is the best way to develop this sport. With any promising pupils I used the Sportivate funding to put them on a level 1 coaching course, this meant the school was set up to introduce and deliver Touch in their curriculum time for the whole of the school. They soon found many pupils wanted to do this as an after school club so we started one for mixed year groups. This had over 100 players each week and the teachers even clubbed together to put a team in which
A few areas I have found very beneficial are as follows:
Greecnilnegaf Fen Please mention
• Canterbury RFC & Simon Langton Boys School both have been very open to change and now see the benefits of their players and members being engaged in Touch • Some key volunteers who have helped to develop the game and ensure they pass on what they have learnt from others. As a coach I ensure my players coach others with less knowledge as this increase the development in such a progressive way. All of this hard work and dedication has resulted in a successful touch club which is at the heart of the local community and continuing to grow in membership. Follow the NTS series results on Sporting Pulse to see how Canterbury and all the other teams get on!

Unsung Heroes Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is renewing its appeal to residents to have smoke alarms fitted on each floor of their homes and to test them weekly to ensure they will work when they are needed. Most people tend to think that having a fire in the home is unlikely to happen to them, but fires can start without warning and when you least expect it, causing damage to your home and potential injury. This spring, KFRS is supporting the latest National family-friendly campaign from Fire Kills, which encourages smoke alarms to be seen as the family home’s ‘unsung hero’, using smiley-faced smoke alarm images in it’s advertising materials. Firefighters will be encouraging residents to make a pledge to test their smoke alarms weekly, and to link it to weekly activity that they carry out. KFRS fire safety manager Martin Skeet said: “We recommend that you build in testing your smoke alarm as part of your regular routine alongside another weekly event, such as watching a favourite television programme or after picking the kids up from a weekly club.
“Working smoke alarms provide early warning in the unfortunate event of a fire, allowing vital time for occupants to escape from their home. Smoke alarms really do save lives, as we have seen on numerous occasions, so by getting in to the habit of testing them weekly you can make sure they will work when you need them most.” He added: “I would also advise all households to make an escape plan and practice it with each member of the family so that everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.” If you discover a fire in your home, leave your property immediately, close the internal doors behind you where possible and call 999 for help. Never go back inside, or try to tackle the fire yourself. For information about the free advice and services Kent Fire and Rescue Service offers call 0800 923 7000.

5 minutes with...
Paul Crampton In this edition of 5 Minutes with we speak with Canterbury Author Paul Crampton. We discuss what inspired him to write his fictional novel The Dream Messiah and what he has in store for us, as far as future projects
Have you always lived in Canterbury, and do you think the City has influenced your writing style and the subjects you write about? I was born in Canterbury in 1957, and have lived and worked in the city for most of my life. Undoubtedly it was the history and beauty of the place that inspired me to write and research all the pictorial non-fiction books I have produced since 1988. I have also had my weekly history column in the Kentish Gazette for much of this time.
22
Please mention
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? Although my Canterbury history books were very rewarding to produce, I had always craved another more creative outlet. Over the years, I have tried, painting, poetry and learning a musical instrument. But it wasn't until 2002, when I actually dreamt the entire plot of a novel, and remembered it, that I thought about writing fiction.

Where did the idea for the Dream messiah originate, what inspired you to write a story along these lines?
Although this is a fictional book, were there many influences from real life experiences that prompted you to write this story?
The Dream Messiah was first conceived in the aftermath of 9/11. I wondered why men would do such a thing in the name of their religion? That was when I started to research Islam. And that is when I discovered a very peaceful religion with much of its history closely connected to both Judaism and Christianity. Therefore, I decided to write something positive; something to celebrate what we all had in common, rather than the differences.
As a writer of fiction, I borrow a lot from my own life and experiences. The novel is set in North London, as this is an area I knew well from visiting my then father in law. Some elements of the character Tony's life are also similar to my own experiences.
How long did it take you to write the book and did the story change or evolve much from your original concept? The initial draft of The Dream Messiah took about six months, but then I put it aside for five years, concerned that the subject might prove too controversial. In 2012, I dusted it off and rewrote it entirely. I tightened up the plot and introduced an element of peril into the story. When the draft was complete, I quickly obtained an agent, who loved the story and saw its publication potential.
Please mention
Are you working on writing any books at the present time? The book I am completing at the moment is called The Canterbury Apocalypse, which has taken me eight years to complete! It is a Dan Brown style romp through Canterbury history; a blend of fact and fiction. Most of the characters are real though, and the plot is based on an old legend told to me once by an elderly historian. He spoke of the skulls of no less than 15 'Canterbury Saints' having been hidden in churches in and around the city. Understandably, this book is keenly anticipated locally. The Dream Messiah is available on Kindle and in printed form on Amazon.co.uk. Printed copies are also available via The Conrad Press website and in Canterbury Waterstones.

Confused about the I’m sure that I’m not the only one confused about the up-coming EU Referendum on June 23 and the pros and cons of staying or leaving the EU. On the face of it, Britain leaving the EU and becoming an independent state with free trade and more control over its legislation, fishing, borders and future seems like a good idea. The complexity of a Brexit might not be as clear cut, or as one sided as I thought. Like many people in the UK, I’m now frantically reading up and questioning both sides of the argument as the referendum draws closer. How we vote, and the long term affects will have implications for generations to come. One of the major concerns and one that has undoubtedly forced the government to call a referendum, is the issue of immigration. As a member state of the EU, there is a freedom of movement of people from other EU states and one argument for exiting the EU would be that we, as a country would regain control of our borders and have more say about the regulation governing immigration. There is a counter argument that thousands of Britain’s travel around Europe every year, whether it be on business or holiday, and this would not be as easy to do if Britain were to become independent. Do we also rely to some
of these migrant workers to keep the cost of our manufacturing and agriculture cost down? If you were to look at a proportion of unskilled workers in manufacturing, farming, production etc are these migrant workers. So if we left the EU and tightened our immigration to the extent that some would like us to, would we see a shortage of workers? This shortfall could be taken up with English workers that would perhaps be demanding higher rates of pay and better working conditions. There is also the question whether Britain has lost its identity and by leaving the EU would we begin to get this back. Are we “Great Britain” with our morals, history and patriotism or are we “Little Britain” a subservient state of the bigger European Union? There are concerns that the EU dictates so much of the bureaucracy and red tape in this country, agriculture, farming, fishing etc and it appears that we are paying £55 million a day in EU membership for the privilege. After a lot of searching through the internet, I’m struggling to see that we are actually gaining financially as

EU Referendum? a direct result of this. It seems there is still a deficit on our investment. The EU does fund some of the poorer communities with grants and subsidies, but surely we could just inject some of the £55 Million a day we pay in membership directly in to this? The pro-Europe campaigners say that if we stay in the EU is we are viewed as a much more attractive investment for other countries, we get more of a vote of confidence for investment and trade and that by exciting the EU and going it alone. They feel that a Brexit could see us with years of economic uncertainty and that it’s better the devil you know. Britain, is at the moment is one of the strongest economies in Europe and even the world, so would we be risking this if we left the EU? There have been benefits in being part of the EU, we have better working conditions, cleaner beaches and environment, but equally there have been the negatives of being dictated to by Brussels on what we can and can’t do in our own country and having to follow their rules and regulations. We will all get to have our say in the referendum on June 23, so make sure you choose wisely with an informed decision.

“Go outside. Remain” Nick Offerman
A wise man once said go outdoors and remain there. There might still be a chill in the air but days are getting longer and the galanthus are in bloom – it’s the perfect time to prep the garden. Here are some beginner tips to get you started at this time of year.
One: Get your tools in order
Everyone needs the tools of their trade. My big five for the garden are fork, spade, hoe, rake, and trowel. A good pair of gloves are a must and a decent pair of secateurs will be at home in your pocket. A wheelbarrow completes the rock star look.
Two: Compost
One of the first things you want to establish is a compost heap. This can begin as simply a sunny corner in the garden where you put your vegetable scraps but you’ll soon want a container of sorts. There are numerous ones available on the market but it’s an easy job (and fun) to construct one from scrap timber or pallets, old tyres, bricks or wire mesh. A quick search online will yield countless tutorials; ignore them all and make up your own design. Avoid placing the heap on concrete, patio slabs or tarmac. You want a site on bare soil so worms and other creatures can colonise, they help mix the compost. When adding ingredients include a healthy mix of green (vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, plant prunings, grass cuttings etc.) and brown (cardboard egg boxes, scrunched up paper, small twigs etc.) waste. Do not add meat or cooked food waste, this attracts rats, and avoid citrus. Some egg shells provide good minerals though!

Three: Prepare the ground
In other words: weeding. Dig out tired old shrubs and weeds, especially perennials (thistle, nettle, bindweed etc.) Try to remove all parts of the roots, but don’t be over hasty. My grandfather would tell me a garden would only ever be finished if there was nothing left to take out. Use a fork to turn the soil over, hoe and then rake. Then bask in satisfaction. At this time of year if you’re not going to plant anything for another week or two then it helps to lay some old carpet over your freshly turned soil. This prevents new weeds from getting any sunlight and helps warm the ground.

Four: Sow
01227 479476 www.activelifeltd.co.uk
A simple way to start planting is sow some herb seeds in small pots with fresh compost and sit them inside by a window with plenty of light. Water regularly but don’t drown them. Basil, parsley and thyme are all pretty easy to look after and don’t take long to grow. If you also grow tomatoes this year some basil will taste great with them.

Five: Sit
Another tip from my grandfather: when the work is complete don’t forget to sit in the garden; it’s important to enjoy the space you’ve created. If the nights are a little chilly, grab some blankets, get a fire pit on the go, cuddle up and crack open a bottle of the parsley wine you’ve had brewing in the shed since last year. You didn’t think we were sowing herbs for a salad now did you! By Stewart McClelland

Benefits of Swimming With the correct technique, swimming provides many benefits • Low impact sport The water supports your body. Ideal for injured athletes, pregnant women, overweight and disabled people who are unable to put too much strain on their joints. • Muscle toning Works all the major muscle groups and develops a strong body core. • Increase fitness and flexibility Regular training provides an effective workout, burning up calories. • Improve health Using the correct breathing techniques whilst swimming is great for the lungs. Many parents seek swimming lessons for their children so that they develop water confidence and life saving skills. Once your child is competent and confident in the water they can progress to a more advanced range of skills. Clubs offer a range of activities such as competitive swimming, water polo, diving, synchronised swimming and open water swimming. Swimming is a sport for everyone. Many swimming clubs have a Masters section; a club for people aged 18 and over who like to swim. The clubs cater for all abilities. It can be a fun, sociable workout with new friends, or an intense training regime to compete in Masters Championships. In the Kent Championships, the oldest competitors have been in the 100-104 age group. You are never too old!

Method Soak 10 wooden skewers in cold water for 30 minutes to prevent them from burning during cooking. Mix together the prawns with the rest of the ingredients except the fresh coriander leaves. Cover and pop in the fridge to marinate for 2 hours or overnight. Thread the marinated prawns on to skewers and place under the grill. What’s the point of the hoverboard? Now before you reach for the Daily Mail article saying they’re illegal on the roads and it doesn’t even hover like Doc Brown intended it to, there’s no denying they have really caught on lately. I’ve been given a board for the weekend and after wobbling at first, a few minutes later I was spinning around and it found it incredibly stable, tough and with the Bluetooth link up to my phone, it made a rather good portable jukebox. The first thing that struck me was how tough it is. It’s got a steel plate running through it, so after jumping off and flipping it into a wall (like I did) it remained unscathed. Stepping on is like getting onto a podium – like a stage rising up at the O2. It’s very stable and the wide tyres are capable of riding comfortably over a small bump. Leaning forwards to go forwards and backwards to stop is very intuitive.
The horror stories are all true. There are manufacturers out there who make boards that set on fire due to cheap parts and no fuses. So if you’re going to get a good all-rounder, make sure you go for a british standards approved board from a shop, not a short term seller like those on eBay. This one I used is CE approved, they deliver, has a Samsung battery for twelve miles of travel, the mobile phone bluetooth with speaker AND the all important fused plug for £375. www.londonhoverboards.com Josh Coleman
Steering is incredibly accurate too. The Hoverboard is not like a bike, it’s an extension of yourself, it replaces walking for getting around and you have almost the same mobility. You can ride into the narrowest corners, up hills and with a top speed of 11mph it’s great fun.
