Air Ambulance appeals for volunteers A life-saving charity providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in the south East is appealing for more volunteers in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Members of the public can help out in a number of ways including placing and emptying collection boxes, selling merchandise at fundraising events and representing the charity at cheque presentations. They can also help raise awareness of the service as public speakers by giving talks to local groups, clubs, schools, societies and other organisations. Other roles at Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance include store and street collectors, drivers and couriers, and office administration. Head of Volunteer Resource Amy Hamer said: “As a charity, we cover a region in excess of 3,500 square miles with a population of 4.5 million people. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organisation and absolutely vital to our operation in terms of raising funds and awareness. “They can give as little or as much of their

time as they like, and all new recruits will receive an induction and training in each of their chosen roles.” Volunteering is an opportunity for people to “give something back” to the community, meet new people and gain work experience. The air ambulance’s volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups and include former patients, bankers, teachers, pilots and a magician. Paul Skelley, a former business intelligence manager, said: “I’ve been a volunteer for just over four years and because of my background in training it was an ideal opportunity to use these skills with the air ambulance. “It’s an exciting role and a superb opportunity to do something worthwhile for a very worthwhile organisation.”

Theatre Club of Kent The months up to Christmas will be filled quite nicely for Theatre Club of Kent members with a good variety of excursions to choose from. Teresa Butler has been arranging and accompanying theatre trips for the last 19 years and some club members have been with her from the start. Along the way new members have joined but there’s always room for more. “Theatregoing in Style” describes our trips perfectly. It’s the easy, hassle free way to go to the theatre in London and the provinces. We always go to matinee performances so we have a great day out and are not late getting back home. In July we saw The Pajama Game with Joanna Riding, Michael Zavier and Gary Wilmot. Our comfortable coach picked us up along the route from Sandwich to Hythe, coffee and biscuits stop at the Great Danes Hotel Maidstone. Then onto London to our optional lunch venue, the four star Kingsway Hall Hotel. Those members who didn’t book lunch visited the Covent Garden area. The Pajama Game is a good old fashioned musical with familiar songs and great dance routines performed with ease. Joanna Riding is one of my favourite performers and she carried out the role of Babe Williams with her usual aplomb showcasing all her talents. Coming up in September we have a short break to Northampton and theatre trips to the Mill at Sonning Restaurant Theatre near
The Royal Albert Hall 6
Reading and Miss Saigon in London. October brings Lord of the Dance at the London Palladium. In November we go to Chichester to see Gypsy the Musical and White Christmas with Aled Jones and Tom Chambers at the Dominion Theatre London. To round off the year in December we have the John Rutter Christmas Carol Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Quex Park Revisited In the late summer of 1914 many Belgian civilians began to flee from the fighting, soon to be followed by wounded men of the Belgian Army. The first group were brought over to England from Ostend on 10 October by the Wounded Allies Relief Committee, a British aid organisation formed in August 1914, and taken to the a hospital set up by a Voluntary Aid Detachment in Ramsgate. The VAD hospital at Quex Park was one of 80 in Kent. The local newspaper reported that the Belgians were greeted in the town by 20,000 people lining the pavements. Reporters were allowed to interview some of the men and to tell their readers first hand news of the war. At 7.45pm on the evening of 14 October a telegram was received warning that 100 wounded men would arrive by train at the local Birchington station at midnight and asking that they be found hospital accommodation locally. It was assumed they would be British wounded as no mention was made of Belgians. Preparations began, promises of the use of buildings, beds and equipment were called in. Volunteers gathered to make everything ready. After several delays the train eventually arrived early the next day and only
then did the waiting volunteers know their patients would be Belgians. Belgian soldiers continued to be admitted to the hospital at Quex until April 1915, by which time Belgian hospitals in England had been established. Although only at Quex for a few short months, several of the Belgian patients are still remembered today. The Powell-Cotton Museum is proud to

- The First World War launch our 2014 commemoration programme on 1 April through a series of exhibitions. Welkom Vriend! A panel display using the Museum’s photographic and archival material to recount the arrival of Belgian patients at the VAD hospital and the individual stories of several patients. This narrative display will give an insight into a little talked about aspect of the First World War and its impact
on communities from both sides of the channel. From Rowland Ward to hospital ward We will use the Museum’s rich photographic archive to trace how the Powell-Cotton Museum became a hospital at the start of the War. The Museum, known for Rowland Ward’s taxidermy displays, transformed into hospital wards, yet retained its unique and fascinating character. Visitors will discover the importance of the taxidermy displays and the significance of Quex Park during the War. Far from Home: Life on the Belgian Frontline Forming part of an on-going partnership with the In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres, who will lend the exhibits for this display. It will explore life on the frontline in Belgium highlighting the contrast between wartime Kent, seen in the other two exhibits, and life on the frontline for the soldiers prior to entering the VAD hospital. This will widen visitors’ understandings of wartime experiences.

The Deal Society Looking back… “The planners have gathered their forces again for a new onslaught of redevelopment…fascinating period houses will go…and in their place will arise a monstrous, incongruous collection of public buildings.” A letter in the Times newspaper on 24 April 1964 alerted not only the citizens of Deal but the whole nation to the potential destruction of the centre of their historic town. The Allen Plan, as the proposal became known, was greatly influenced by the town planning theories of the time. There had been a massive increase in car ownership. Other communities were tearing down town centres and replacing them with shopping malls and pedestrian precincts. Tower blocks were replacing slums and changing the horizon in many parts of England. Deal had suffered much war damage and many of the properties in what we now call the Middle Street Conservation Area were in a shocking state of disrepair. One councillor had called them “rotting damp pig holes”! There was widespread alarm in the community at Allen’s proposals because

the town’s heritage was at risk and assets of community value, like the historic Town Hall, were at stake. So on 5 May 1964 over 300 people gathered in the Astor Theatre. A lively controversy lasted the whole of 1964 until the Borough Council suddenly dropped the Allen plan in December of that year. The Plan was dead but the Deal Society was born.
Looking forward… Keeping an eye on the development plans for Deal and Walmer remains at the heart of the Deal Society’s work 50 years after it was formed. The Society has an ex officio place on the Deal Town Council planning committee and it also monitors the planning work of Walmer Parish Council. In the last few years it was very involved with Deal Town Council and Sholden Parish Council about the two huge developments on the edge of the town. The Society remains convinced that these edge of town developments are seriously misguided. The Society also has a concern about the town’s amenities. It was involved in the resurrection of the Astor Theatre. It hopes to see the Regent Cinema reopened. It is involved in the forward plans for the

protection of Deal Hospital. It welcomes the extension of the HS1 train service. The Society remembers some of the famous daughters and sons of Deal and Walmer through the blue plaque scheme. They are added to all in the time and in this commemorative year of the beginning of World War 1 it will be putting up one for Nurse Edith Appleton in Golden Street. One of the major results of the failure of the Allen plan was the creation of the Middle Street Conservation Area, which was the first in Kent and remains today as a testament to the power of local democracy and the will of the people to make their voice heard. To celebrate 50 years of the Deal Society, Lady Boyce, the patron of the Society, unveiled a plaque at the Astor Theatre commemorating the formation of the Society there on 5 May 1964 - pictured right.

David Chamberlain and his book ‘Deal and Walmer’s Piscatorial Past’ For almost fifty years David Chamberlain had been searching the sea off Deal and Walmer for fish and shipwrecks. As a full time professional boatman, he took anglers to the best fishing marks in and around the Goodwin Sands. Prior to retirement, he was popular with fishing parties in his boat Morning Haze and over the years has helped many an angler catch their fish of a lifetime. This knowledge also helped him to identify the whereabouts of the many sunken wrecks, which litter the sea bed in one of the world’s most dangerous waters. Since man first took to the sea in boats, the English Channel has claimed not only their vessels - but also their lives. This

understanding, along with his profession, has seen David being included in various underwater archaeological expeditions to historical shipwrecks. From his experiences and research, he has written six books on the subject of local shipwrecks which abound off the coast of Deal and the Goodwin Sands. With an estimated 2000 shipwrecks in this area there have been many facts that have elapsed; and stories of heroism from the crews of the lifeboats in the saving of lives. In his books he brought to life those moments that have been forgotten and has revived an interest in the towns past history. His research has dispelled a myth that had been circulating Deal since the 1700s, that

the boatmen were savages and only there to loot wrecks at the cost of human lives. The ‘Great Storm’ of 1703 saw many ships lost at anchor in the Downs and four of them being Men-of-War from Queen Ann’s Navy. From the archives of the Public Record Office he found out that it was Daniel Defoe, who spread these malicious lies and defamed Deal and its townsfolk. This research has positively proved that this myth was a pack of lies in which the then Mayor, Thomas Powell, wanted to sue Defoe for slander. David Chamberlain’s main passion has been angling which he first pursued when he was five years old. Although, now in his seventies, he still participates once a week from the beach and occasionally the boat. His latest book is about the sport and the importance and history it has had in the town and parish of Deal and Walmer. Over the years he became friendly with the late

local newspaper photographer, Basil Kidd, who would take photos of the large fish that Deal was famous for; filling the sports pages of the East Kent Mercury and national fishing papers. It was from these professional photographs that David got the permission of copyright to use for his latest book, ‘Deal and Walmer’s Piscatorial Past’. This book shows an insight of the glorious days of catches of large cod, conger eels, spurdog, thornback rays and bass that were plentiful in the past. The 60 black and white quality illustrations show the excellence of sport that was to be had; and David’s dialogue, at times amusing, tells of the anglers’ exploits and his life as a Deal boatman. Cod moves On the first day of the New Year, Tuesday 1st January, 1963, there was a strong easterly wind blowing … and by the next morning it had started to snow. This was to herald the beginning of one of the coldest winters that Kent would ever witness. The sea temperature plummeted to a state where the sea alongshore started to freeze over. When the sea condition gets that cold the fish move out into deeper water, where the coldness does not penetrate. During those bitter conditions many hardy sea anglers continued to fish from the beach, pier and boats; but to no avail. There were no signs of life, and their rod tips remained static with the wet line freezing on the

in mysterious ways reels. Even the common lugworm was not available for bait, as it had burrowed down too deep for the bait diggers to find. It would not be until March of that year before any fish were caught, and they consisted of a few dabs and flounders from the shore. Eventually the fish famine was forgotten as in the autumn of 1963 vast quantities of cod had arrived off the coast of Deal. The results of the local club boat fishing festival recorded a total weight of over two tons – which the anglers brought to the scales to be weighed. The town once again, became the Mecca of sea angling. Throughout the following years, the size of cod being caught got larger and the national record was almost beaten with a 50lb 14oz cod landed by Brian Maidment from a boat in 1972. Brian was a local boatman and gained fame when his photograph featured on the u

front page of Deal Council’s fishing guide the following year. The Council had a plaster cast made of his fish, which was displayed in the café at the end of Deal Pier. This replica was sadly lost when the cafe on the pier was rebuilt and part of Deal’s piscatorial history disappeared. The next decade saw countless cod being caught, although the larger fish seemed to become harder to find. Nevertheless, many excellent fish in the 20 and 30lb size were still captured until the species became scarce at the start of the new Millennium. Numerous anglers accused commercial over fishing for the decline, but as it can be seen, the weather and sea temperature is also a governing factor. Cod do move in mysterious ways and each winter anglers get ready for the cod season with anticipation - unfortunately, recent years have been a
disappointment. However, all is not lost, as last year saw a revival of small codling caught from Deal and the anglers ever enthusiast optimism have great hopes for the coming season. Will the cod make a return to the beach, pier and boats off Deal? Who knows … only time will tell? Nevertheless, there will still be keen anglers casting a line and braving the cold winter weather in anticipation. David Chamberlain

Handyman Hello, let me introduce myself. I’m Simon, manager of A Handyman for All Seasons, you’ll see our advert around here somewhere. Have a look at our website or find us on Facebook. Hopefully when you leave you’ll have a smile on your face. We take our work very seriously, but hopefully you’ll realise we treat everything else with a healthy dose of humour. There are three of us roaming the locality, myself, Manager and first point of contact for the business. Ash, my Second in Command is in his third year with the business, when you meet him you’ll agree he is very much an asset, and, Ian who has recently joined us, is working out very well and is already establishing his own fan club within our
clientele. Luckily, we also have Lisa in the office, sorting out our admin and adding a professional take to my ramblings on Facebook. Of course we appreciate there’s a great deal more to life than just work and we also like to play with just as much enthusiasm. Personally I cherish time spent with my family, I also play bass guitar and love jamming, writing and arranging music with others, I work part-time for the RSPB and love teaching others about birds and the countryside in general. Ash is a keen fisherman and Ian is a family man and keen biker. If you see us about please give us a wave or say “Hello”. We look forward to your call.

Talking Therapies@Psicon Mental health affects us all. How we think and feel about ourselves and our lives impacts on our behaviour and how we cope in tough times. Whether we call it well-being, emotional welfare or mental health, it’s key to living a fulfilling life. There are times when everyone feels stressed or unhappy. These bad times can pass but sometimes there are problems that do not go away and it can become difficult to cope. Research indicates that 1 in 4 people experience common problems such as low mood, stress, worry, anxiety, phobia, panic or reliving traumatic events in any year, which can be triggered by work stressors, personal relationships, adjustments to new situations, losses or accidents – to name only a few. It can be difficult to know where to turn when experiencing these difficulties; talking to a GP can seem daunting, and often people find themselves suffering in silence. One of the biggest barriers to accessing support is that often people just don’t know where to turn.
