Jelly Legs Whether you’re a seasoned runner, haven’t run for years or are thinking about starting, then Jelly Legs could be the club for you. The Jelly Legs Running Club has been active in the Deal and Walmer area for four years and provides both men and women with the opportunity to get active and run for fun and fitness. The club’s aim is to provide a welcoming, social and non-competitive environment in which people of any age, size or ability have the opportunity to run together to improve their health, fitness and confidence. We now have over 300 members across our four different locations in East Kent – at Deal, Canterbury, Whitstable and Hawkinge - and are affiliated to England Athletics, with our own highly-trained, qualified coaches and leaders.

4

Please mention

There are many reasons why our members run and some who have joined the group have found it a life-changing experience, assisting them to lose weight, become more toned, fight depression, gain confidence, train for a specific event or PB or just feel good about themselves again. While most of the events our members enter tend to be road races, quite a few have this year gone off road, with activity-based events that as well as running, involves getting over obstacles and getting very muddy.

A We meet twice a week in the Deal

area at 6.30pm and while we welcome existing runners (both Improvers and Intermediates) all year round, we hold Returners/Beginners courses at specific times. The next course will be in March 2015 and you can get further information by contacting Lesley Daley on 07816 848890

Tips on winter running When it’s freezing outside it’s hard to leave your warm home. However, when dressed appropriately, the temperature outside shouldn’t be a problem. The trick is to dress for a few degrees warmer than the actual air temperature. Layering is key because, as you warm up, you can remove layers and as you cool down again you just put it back on. Plus heat gets trapped between layers of clothing so several thin layers are better than one or two thick layers. Consider the design of your kit, a wind proof/ water proof jacket is an essential piece of winter clothing, preferably in a bright, bold colour with reflective panelling. Steer clear of anything made from cotton. You will still sweat but cotton retains moisture, resulting in you feeling very cold. Consider investing in a pair of running tights made for winter running, these will keep your legs far warmer than a baggier version. Don’t let the rain put you off, your skin is water proof after all!

Spring Flowers As we enter in to the spring ever hopeful that the cold dark nights are starting to fade behind us a splattering of colour and life can be an indication that warmer days are ahead The humble daffodil gives a warm glow to the piles of brown leaves that litter the parks, gardens and road sides of our towns and villages. The daffodil seems to be defiantly resilient to the hardships of the winter months and not foreboding to the cold frosty mornings. As the time is coming to look at the flowers, plants, trees or shrubs that we can consider planting in anticipation of the summer months, we need to provide a bit of TLC to our much neglected Gardens. A thorough spring clean is needed removing any weeds and debris and a rejuvenation of the soil with some much needed nutrients.

Vegetable garden in March Finish any digging Force Rhubarb ( Making it come in to season early) Sow early crops under cloches (cover for protecting outdoor plants) Warm soil using cloches

Fruit garden in March Prune Apple trees and other hardy fruit trees Plant container grown trees and mulch well Dig in manure around the base of fruit trees Prepare strawberry beds

Flower garden in March Prepare borders with manure Train Climbers Prune Roses Divide herbacious plants

Compost Another handy tip maybe to construct a compost heap. Here you can not only deposit any biodegradable garden waste but the compost will provide valuable nutrients and enrich the soil in which you grow. It’s a good idea to keep the contents of the compost varied with grass clippings, vegetable peelings or wood trimmings and make sure you turn the compost heap every month to keep it aerated.

Lost and Found by David Chamberlain In the winter of 1703, England witnessed a storm that was to destroy property and cause the death of more people than any before or since. This storm also created an urban myth and defamation of a town that was adjacent to where the loss of over a thousand sailors occurred. In this book, the author tells the true story of how one of Queen Anne’s warships, the Stirling Castle, was lost and then found almost intact after nearly three-hundred years of being buried in the infamous Goodwin Sands. It also destroys the libel that Daniel Defoe inflicted on the people and boatmen in the town of Deal. This defamation was hoped to be rectified with a prosecution by the 1705 Corporation of Deal, however, it never was - and the lies have survived for over three centuries. The evidence that has been researched in

this book clearly vilifies the dishonour and contempt that Daniel Defoe maliciously provoked on the township and its longshoremen. Along with this, the book also examines and explains, in story and photographs, the successes and disappointments that the modern-day divers and archaeologists have had with the shipwreck - and the hundreds of historical treasures that have been found. It can be purchased from Deal bookshops or online at eBay and Amazon priced £3.99.

Deal‌200 Years Ago Deal was a very busy place 200 years ago. The town always thrived in times of war because of the strategic importance for the navy and merchant shipping. In the age of sail, virtually all the shipping in the channel had to anchor in the Downs (sheltered water off Deal) to wait for the winds to change. Having been blown up the channel by a South Westerly you needed an East wind to take you round the North Foreland and into the port of London. Searching documents you will find entries for the wind direction at Deal for virtually every day and a record of His Majesties ships and Merchant Ships in the Downs. These appear in most unlikely places such as the Court Rolls, the Gentleman’s Magazine, Newcastle Courant and the Kentish Gazette. In Deal there was a Naval Yard occupying the site of Prince of Wales Terrace through to Victoria Road. They were supplying ships with ropes, anchors and Deal built boats. During the Napoleonic Wars, Deal was the embarkation point for several Army campaigns. The 1809 Walcheran campaign

saw 40,000 troops assemble in the sand banks for a couple of weeks before the order to depart was given. Then 600 Deal Boatmen took them and their horses to the ships. Next to the Naval Yard was the Signalling Tower built 1793 (converted to a Timeball Tower in 1854). This had a direct line of communication through to the Admiralty with numerous signalling towers en route and so a message could be sent and acknowledged in about three minutes providing the weather was good. The alternative was horseback or mail coach which took around 11 hours from Deal to London. In 1799 the Turnpike reached Deal connecting to Dover and Sandwich providing a vastly improved road. The bulk of the population (pop 5420 in 1801) lived in the Beach St, Middle St, Lower St (High St) from South St to North St, although the Duke St area was built around 1800. The town was in a state of improvement, an Act of Parliament enabling the Deal Pavement Commissioners to change the frontage of properties, raise road levels and deal with the open drains, all to make it a less muddier place to walk in. The current high street is at least three feet higher than it was, which is

why the older buildings, such as The New Inn have a much lower ground floor. It is quite striking looking at the gardens in the Duke St area how much higher the road level is, even today. Deal people have always tried alternative ways of making a living and so there has always been a smuggling trade. At each attempt to raise import or export duty on goods on various types these have been subject to smuggling attempts, mostly successful and in collusion with local magistrates on occasions. The Customs House in Deal (established soon after Deal became a port) had few staff and had little impact on the trade. During the Napoleonic Wars the Rothschilds in London were getting Deal smugglers to take gold to Paris where they made a profit of 50%. On the way back they carried English spies with the latest military news. Alan Buckman Addelam History Research Group

Deal Town Rangers FC Deal Town Rangers Youth Football Club is a ‘Charter Standard’ Community Club, the highest accolade that is possible to achieve from the Football Association. The club currently has 20 youth football teams aged from under sevens to under 18s and this includes three girls’ teams at under 13, 16 & 18. Teams from 10 and below play organised ‘friendlies’ as FA regulations, all others play in a League format. Season 2013/14 was one of our most successful, the club winning a numbers of trophies and with both of out under 15 teams reaching a cup final. A unique feat in the records of the East Kent Youth League. Our clubhouse is situated at the Castle Community College, where we play most of our football and for all our teams at the younger age groups. Due to current FA regulations it is now necessary to have 5 size of football pitches and 4 different goal sizes, all of which we accommodate at Castle College on 6 pitches.

Teams from under 14 upwards have use of full size pitches at Marke Wood Playing Fields. As a ‘Charter Standard’ club all our managers/ coaches are required to hold the FA Level 1 Coaching Badge, each coach is therefore qualified in coaching, emergency first aid and safeguarding children in football. Our club has specialist officers in football development, a club welfare officer and refereeing. We have a Saturday morning ‘Soccer School’ for children below the age of 6 years in preparation for future seasons. Deal Beach Clean Deal With It, Deal’s local community Green group, had its first Deal Beach Clean in January Wendy Boorman, Deal Beach Warden said “In just over an hour our thirty volunteers managed to collect some 91kgs of rubbish from the Beach. We are very grateful to everyone who donated their time on Sunday. Our next Beach clean will be in March. We log everything we find. This beach clean showed a large amount of discard fishing line on the beach. We see the beach as Deal’s village green. A resource and asset for the whole community, which should be respected by all its users.” Deal With It’s next activity will be its ‘Send a PostCard to Deal’ where is group is looking for people’s ideas on how and where we can make the town and locality more Greener in the next year. Cricket on the

The desire to do the unusual has always held a fascination for some, and to visit the Goodwin Sands as a fun-day out is no exception. The Sands have been visited by thousands over the years, for various reasons, and still attract the curious to this day. On the northern part of the Goodwins, the sand lies exposed at low water and all about the sandbank are ‘swillies’ or deep holes that remain filled with seawater. Elsewhere gullies and mini sand dunes are formed which will start to crumble beneath your feet; and when you try to paddle in the ‘fox-holes’ or the puddles…it is then that you feel the

suction of quick sand. Nevertheless, these conditions give little fear to the colony of hundreds of seals that lay upon it; however, in the past it has given much cause for concern and grievance to humans. Cricket matches played on the Goodwin Sands are irregular and the first recorded game was in the summer of 1813. This caused criticism from the public, as it was thought to be a desecration of the graveyard to all those unfortunate shipwrecked victims. During 1985, thirteen Deal boats assisted in ferrying players and spectators from the Kent County team, for a fundraising match on top of the Goodwins. They carried out approximately a hundred people on a calm and sunny afternoon. Since that event cricket, amongst other games have only been played on the Goodwins whilst on the occasional organised trips.

The Goodwin Sands Potholing Club, a money raising charity which was founded in 1977, has by various means attempted to have an annual visit. In the past they have hired the then large hovercraft from Dover to take many sightseers out to the sandbank. This was always a popular event and would fill the crafts 355 seat capacity. However, with the demise of the hovercrafts, they have since hired two helicopters to convey a smaller amount of people to enjoy the evening’s low tide ramble on the Goodwins Sands. In July 2006, the BBC film crew who were making the well known television programme ‘Coast’ thought it would be a good idea to feature a cricket match being played upon the Sands. As the tide started to make, the skipper of the craft who transported them out urged that they

Cricket on Goodwin Sands (continued) should evacuate with haste. The TV crew pleaded for another ten minutes to finish the take. That was all it took - the tide changed against a north-east wind and the surf built up and swamped the vessel and its outboard engines. Several thousand pounds of film cameras were washing about in the bilge of the disabled boat and the occupants were at risk of being stranded. They needed the assistance of two lifeboats from Ramsgate and Walmer, plus the rescue helicopter, to avert a tragedy. The then Coastguard sector manager summed up the situation by stating: ‘The Sands can appear safe but, if landing, very careful consideration must be given to tides, the weather forecast and the prevailing conditions. The Goodwin Sands should be treated with the utmost respect by visitors’ This advice, unfortunately, has not always been observed…and sometimes ventures to the notorious Goodwin Sands have led to grief and misfortune to the imprudent. Topical - given the recent winds! Do the job once. Sounds stupid, but if the job is to be done once use the strongest materials, in the case of fencing, put in a concrete post. It’ll out last you and me, a wooden post will probably rot at the base in less than five years and you’ll be getting the job done again. Generally a concrete post costs twice as much as a wooden post, but the labour costs will be the same. Use concrete gravel boards, keeps the wooden panels clear of the ground, and reduces rot. Close board panels are far more rigid in construction than waney panels. Use the correct tools for the job. A post hole digger is an amazing bit of kit and really makes the job simple, digs the hole and empties it. Unless you hit an obstacle you can dig a two foot hole in ten minutes, awesome! And a 1m spirit level for post and board levels. We use string to make sure the fence is straight.

Please call me now on 01304 621197 or 07710 433411

The hole. We back fill using a dry mix of 6:1 ballast to cement, when the fence is erect it is simple to make sure all the posts are as we want them, or adjust them if necessary and pour water on at the end. If you are attaching a post to a wall we recommend using frame fixings, simple and easy to use, just make sure you use the right drill sizes.

After the demise of the paper tax disc this year, from 1 January this year the DVLA no longer issued paper counterparts to photocard driving licences. However, there are fears that the licensing agency would not have its replacement online service ready in time and that the change could open people up to online fraud.

Car rental companies currently use the paper part of a driving licence to verify customer identities, but the online service that will be used in place of this system may not be ready for the changeover at New Year. Instead, companies will be obliged to use a premium rate phone number to perform the same function, which could lead to delays and higher prices for customers renting cars. The telephone service costs 51 pence per minute, which is likely to be passed on to customers. Drivers can access their DVLA records online without charge and a similar service is set to be launched for car rental agencies, but there are fears that this service will not be in place by 1 January. In the meantime, customers can choose to share their driver records online via a smartphone or by printing off the same details for rental agencies.

r driving licence The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), is particularly concerned about the timing of the move, which could affect holidaymakers trying to hire cars over the festive period. The association is also concerned that driver details can easily be falsified using the alternative print off system. Furthermore, the DVLA has issued a warning about online fraudsters who issue emails requesting people to verify their driving licences by clicking on a link. Those who do, could allow fraudsters access to their bank details and other personal information, leaving them open to theft and identity fraud. The message purports to be from the DVLA but the agency has warned anyone receiving these emails to delete them immediately. Along with ceasing to issue paper counterparts with new licences, the DVLA says that existing paper driving licence counterparts can be destroyed as they will no longer serve any purpose. Drivers using pre-1998 driving licences which are paper only can keep using these until they need to update their details, such as name and address, or renew their licence for any other reason. The abolition of the paper licence is part of the same shake up that saw the paper tax disc phased out this year, in a move to save the DVLA millions of pounds in administration costs.

5 minutes with...

Johnny Lewis In this edition of Five Minutes With, our roving reporter catches up with Coastal Radio’s founder, Johnny Lewis Hi Johnny, for those who have not yet heard about Coastal Radio – What is it? Coastal Radio is a new community radio station for the Sandwich, Deal and Dover areas. We broadcast a number of live and prerecorded shows that will feature local news and events from around the area and playing a wide selection of music. Coastal Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, a selection of original programming with music genres catering for most tastes and age groups from our studio in Sandwich. We also offer training courses in the broadcast media. What gave you the idea to set up Coastal Radio? To be honest the lack of Local Radio in our area now; At one time you had the likes of TLR and Neptune Radio, but they have both gone now sadly.

What are the main differences between Coastal Radio and some of the main radio national or even county wide stations? On Coastal Radio we tend to talk more about our area. Events in Sandwich and Deal that the other stations won’t cover; we also like to get local people on air talking about the work they do especially with charity’s. We also play a wide mix of music, not just the same few hundred chart songs. You’ll not only hear singles but album tracks as well. What are the main challenges that you face as a community radio station serving the people of Deal? Like any Community Radio Station we rely on volunteers, and it’s wonderful that people do give up their time to help with not only show but also to go around promoting the station. We do want the people of Deal to be involved

and to help promote the town along with Sandwich. I’m pleased to say; so far we have had a very positive response from the town. How can the local community help Costal Radio? We are always on the lookout for people who would like to get involved on air, or behind the scenes. Training is given, I do most of the training myself as I have 37 years of experience in Media broadcasting. Also if charities have events coming up we will happily promote them on air. Just email the studio and give us as much notice as possible studio@coastal-radio.uk What sort of programmes can we hear on the station? We are on 24 hours a day. At the moment we have a live Breakfast Show and Afternoon show Monday to Fridays. At the weekend most shows are presenter lead. These shows are a mix of local information, short interviews about the area and charity events, plus the latest travel. Music is a mix of songs both singles and album tracks from the past 50 years.

Best thing is tune in and give us a go! www-coastal-radio.uk Finally Johnny, you’ve worked in radio for many years and in many different parts of the world, what are the major changes have you seen in the industry of late and what is your view on the future of radio? I started on a Boat, The good old Mi Amigo 37 years ago. Fun times, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge or in the Mi Amigos case over the bridge!! Radio is so different now. Turntables, records and cartridge machines have been replaced by computers. We used to choose our own songs, it’s now done by a computer, I’ve no problem with that as it helps the flow of the programme and station and gives the presenter time to think about his or her link (What you’re about to say), if you’re allowed to say something. The fun and localness is missing now from Radio around the UK. At Coastal we want to put that localness back into radio, and allow the presenters to be natural, not just talking from a card placed in the studio. If it works like that great, if it does not at least we’ve tried!

Worry… the greatest enemy of a good mood We can all probably relate to having experienced worry at some point in our lives. Worrying is actually very common and, naturally in life, we occasionally experience situations that lead us to worry about some, or even many, things. Sometimes though worry can be problematic, especially if we find ourselves worrying uncontrollably and frequently; we can then find it hard to concentrate on anything other than the worry. We can also experience worries at quite inconvenient times – for example, when we are trying to drop off to sleep in the evening. We might find ourselves dwelling on things late into the night and this can mean that we find it harder to get to sleep. Often worries can seem overwhelming. Sometimes our worries act in a similar way to a magnet – we start worrying about one thing and then, before we know it, a whole load of other worries are pulled in; we then end up worrying about a whole host of different things. So wouldn’t it be great if we could be taught strategies to help us to deal with worries in a

A

productive way that can help us to feel less anxious? Well the good news is we can! Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short, is an evidence based approach that teaches us different tools and strategies for dealing with things like worry, low mood, anxiety and panic. CBT teaches us that there are two different types of worry: practical worries (those for which we may be able to find a solution) and hypothetical worries (those which are based so far in the future that we have absolutely no way of knowing if they may happen and cannot do anything about). Sorting our worries into these two categories can be very useful as there are different CBT tools to be used in overcoming each of them to manage excessive worrying. These tools are just a small part of the CBT toolkit which can be used to manage common everyday problems such as worry, stress, anxiety, low mood, panic or phobias. CBT can be accessed for free on the NHS via IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services.

Our service at Talking Therapies @ Psicon offers individual face to face psychological coaching and therapy to people aged 18 years and over. If you are experiencing any of the difficulties mentioned above and think that you may benefit from learning how to use CBT to overcome and manage your difficulties, please contact us directly on 01227 479902 or email us at talkingtherapies@psicon.co.uk
