Deal Pier It would have been criminal to produce a Deal Community magazine without paying reference to the iconic pier. Always busy with anglers and tourists, we are grateful to Dover District Council for letting us use the following information from the “Deal Pier” Website. You can keep up to date with any developments by checking the website at www.dealpier.uk The present pier was designed by Sir William Halcrow and Partners, the Council’s consultant engineers, to the requirements of the Council, and was built by Concrete Piling Ltd. Constructed of reinforced concrete it has a one thousand feet stem with almost one third of a mile of open seating. At seaward end of the approach is a three deck pier head set at right angles to the approach and parallel to the coast. At promenade level there is a lounge café, bar and terraced area.
4
Please mention
Recent storms have wrought havoc with the piers at Herne Bay and Margate, leaving Deal the only remaining pleasure pier in Kent. An invigorating stroll along its stem is rewarded by a spectacular panorama of the coastline stretching from Kingsdown Cliffs southwards to an extensive sweep of Thanet in the north. And, in between, is the enchanting townscape of Deal with its orderly row of quaint 18th and 19th century cottages - each with a different arrangement of doors and windows and an individually-shaped roof - interspersed with local landmarks: the Royal Marines Barracks, time ball tower and three low, squat Tudor fortresses, behind which peer the numerous cupolas and spires of churches and chapels beyond. Pleasure craft and local fishing boats frequent home waters while hovercraft from Pegwell Bay skim the Goodwins and crossChannel ferries make their more leisurely crossing from the shelter of Dover Harbour to the dimly-viewed coast of France.”

Deal’s Big Dig Meadow making at Deal Rail Station Deal With It, Deal’s local community Green group, has been meadow making on the waste land near Deal Rail Station in a weekend ‘Big Dig’. Sue Sullivan, Meadow maker organiser, said “Last year we transformed some 80sqm of waste land into a poppy meadow to remember the outbreak of the First World War. This year we have extended the area to nearly 100sqm and are planning to sow a perennial hay meadow. This will over a period of time develop into a diverse area of native wildflowers to support wildlife and pollinators like bees. It will only require a couple of cuts per year in maintenance and hopefully no more digging. The digging was hard as the ground is the site of old ticket office demolished in the early 1970s.
6
Please mention
We were taking out a lot of rubble from the site - in fact at times it felt more like archaeology rather than gardening! We are really grateful to our wonderful volunteers - we had twenty of them over the weekend dig. The next step is to sow the meadow which we will do in the next week - we will be adding some annual meadow seeds like poppies and cornflower to brighten things up in the first year.”

Lifeboat Victory There is only one wreck that is visible with the naked eye on the Goodwins Sands – although the massive 7,612 ton Luray Victory’s former glory is now reduced to a king post showing above the sea. On January 30th 1946, the Luray Victory, which was only two years old and operated by Black Diamond Steamship Co, was on route to the port of Bremerhaven. From Baltimore, the American government was sending vast amounts of food supplies to relieve war torn Europe. However, according to the recommendation of the American War Shipping Administration their ships did not require pilots to steam through the Straits of Dover. The charts on these Victory ships were not even amended or updated with the inclusion of the buoys that surrounded the Goodwin Sands. On that cold January night, coxswain Freddy Upton along with his lifeboat crew were returning from a wasted trip out to the Sands in an area known to them as ‘Calamity Corner’. The vessel that they had searched for was the American Liberty ship Am-Mer-Mar. She had

inadvertently gone aground on the Goodwins, but had managed to free herself before the lifeboat had arrived. Shortly after the lifeboat Charles Dibden had returned ashore, Upton was informed that another American vessel had gone aground in the same vicinity as the last. At twenty-seven minutes past ten they came upon the ship. She was almost high and dry in the near gale force wind and the seas that surrounded her were a turbulent mass. Freddy Upton considered it too dangerous and an unnecessary risk to his crew to go along side the grounded vessel, therefore he waited for the tide to make. Later that night tugs arrived and, as the tide rose, the Charles Dibden assisted them in getting a towing hawser aboard the Luray Victory. Unfortunately the Goodwins had already made a prior claim to the ship - as the tugs efforts were in vain. The crew of the lifeboat were tired and famished; they had spent all night five miles offshore in those inhospitable conditions. After the Charles Dibden was refuelled and the men had put on

Carpet Market dry clothes and satiated their hunger, Upton returned to the strickened casualty. By this time the wind had reached gale force and had backed to the south. As the lifeboat coxswain reached the Luray Victory, he could see that the ship was starting to break up. The Goodwins had broken the back of the 439 feet hull; which was now listing to port.

At four o’clock on that wind swept afternoon the captain of the Victory ship declared that he wanted to abandon her. The lifeboat cautiously moved towards the vessel. With low water approaching the seas were crashing against the sides of her hull, also the ebb tide was sluicing along it making the conditions worse. With the help of his engineer, Upton managed to bump the lifeboat alongside the wreck, enough times to take off the entire ship’s crew of 49 to safety.

Downs Sailing Club The Downs Sailing Club of Deal takes its name from the stretch of water that it is sailed upon. ‘The ly Downs’ is a sheltered anchorage between the beaches of Deal and Walmer. The club was formed in 1949 by a handful of local people sailing homemade dinghies and operated from an old fisherman’s hut as a clubhouse. Next followed a pre-fab structure for many years, the brick building you see today which was officially opened by the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1987. The club can boast 12 past national and European champions and even had a representative in the 2000 Sydney Olympics as well as coaches provided for the England team. With deep water at both low and high tide boats can be launched without fear of grounding. One disadvantage of the shingle however is the constantly changing shape of the beach that can affect the steepness. Boats are winched back up towards the clubhouse on purpose

built sledges with skis as conventional wheeled trolleys would sink. Originally boats were simply pushed into the sea and man handled with large teams of people back up. Boats were often clinker built in the early years and were extremely tough but heavy. Modern materials though light weight and well designed would not stand the rigours of being dragged in this fashion. Some old cine footage exists from the very early days, and shows sailors wearing tweed jackets and smoking pipes and lady members with feathered hats and high heels. A far cry from the modern high tech attire to which the wetsuit revolutionised everything. The club has an excellent reputation nationally as a racing club and has an all season programme. In the warmer months for example there is racing on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, Fridays provides an opportunity for more

losa & loder casual family sailing with coaching. There can be up to 4 hours racing on a Sunday and cup races on bank holidays. Various courses are held throughout the year along with an active programme for young sailors getting onto the water. Last year the club hosted the prestigious NSSA (National Schools sailing Association) regatta with county teams from all over the country and numbering over 300 boats. It was 4 years in the planning and was blessed with exciting East winds that challenged even the most experienced youngsters. Membership can start from as little as £25 for a cadet under 18 and up to £105 for a whole family. You do not even have to own your own boat as various club boats are available for hire from as little as £4 per session. Or you could crew for more experienced sailors as an introduction to the sport in a double-handed dinghy. With the ever increasing traffic on the roads the water is increasingly seen as a safe sporting environment especially when it is monitored closely by a fleet of safety boats with experienced crews. The bridge control onshore who have a panoramic view can radio for assistance for anyone who capsizes in seconds. Sailing is a skill, but once learnt will never be forgotten.

The Deal Memorial On 22nd September 1989 the IRA exploded a bomb at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal killing 11 Musicians and seriously injured 11 more. The Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust exists to maintain The Memorial Bandstand (built in 1993) to stage a series of ‘free’ public concerts on the Bandstand between May and September each year in memory of the 11 Musicians . Eleven sides of the twelve-sided structure have engraved tablets bearing the names of those that lost their lives.
14
Please mention
The Memorial Bandstand Trust is managed by a Board of 4 unpaid Trustees and a Committee of 12 volunteers, each of whom bring significant experience and expertise to assure the competent governance of the charity and successfully stage concerts for the benefit of the public. Our Constitution states that our Concerts (over 20 annually) are free, non-ticketed events. There is always a shortfall between costs and donations so fund-raising is a big part of our work. Since the opening of the bandstand in 1993, The Royal Marines Band has performed a Memorial Concert that includes a Re-dedication Service each year at the Bandstand. This Concert has grown in popularity over the years and now attracts crowds in excess of 10,000. In 2014 it was thought that 12,000 people attended the 25th Anniversary concert.

Astor Community Theatre The Astor Community Theatre will celebrate its 70th Anniversary on 9th May 2015. Although the building actually opened in 1906 and was known as Stanhope Hall. It was named after Lady Hester Stanhope, an extraordinary woman and the niece of William Pitt. There was a large walled garden where the car park now exists and in the summer there were open-air events and in the winter, the garden was flooded and used as an ice rink. In 1928, when the Pavilion Theatre (aka The Regent) opened on the seafront the theatre was renamed The Winter Gardens Theatre. In 1934 Deal’s MP Major John James Astor leased the site to Deal Borough Council with a WVS canteen. In May 1945 he presented the then Winter Gardens Theatre to the people of Deal to mark his retirement from Parliament and in recognition of their ‘courage & fortitude’ during the bombing of Deal during the Second World War. In recognition of this generous gift, Deal Borough Council renamed it the Astor Hall. In June 2009, James Tillitt of Deal Arts Management CIC, acquired the lease and began a 7-month restoration programme and the building reopened in January 2010 as The Astor Community Theatre. Since then the theatre has become the ‘go to’ venue

Goodwin Sands Silver Over the centuries there have been reports of treasure being discovered on the Goodwin Sands, however, it was not until 2005 that these rumours became fact. It was when the contents of the Dutch East Indiaman Rooswijk’s cargo of a thousand bars of silver and 36,000 pieces of eight were recovered. The Rooswijk had set sail with a full cargo from the port of Texel on the 8th of January, 1740. Her destination was the Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) headquarters in Batavia (now Jakarta). A few days later and at night in a snow storm, which was being whipped up by a severe north-east gale, she ran aground on the Goodwin Sands. The surf was so great, the vessel was instantly swamped and the crew’s actions to save her were rendered useless. The ship was quickly pounded to pieces and all the crew, plus 250 of the companies solders, perished. Such was the ferocity of the storm there was nobody about to witness the mariners plight. The following day, wreckage was found washed-up on the beach. A Deal longshoreman found a chest that contained letters written in a foreign language; being an honest fellow he retuned it to the customs officials. It was from

these letters that the tragedy was realised and the name of the shipwreck known, however, at that time, her remains were never found. The shape of the Goodwin Sands is changing constantly due to the strong tides and turbulent weather. Some parts get scoured out exposing uncharted shipwrecks – then, as quickly as it happens; get covered up with more sediment from the 10 mile sand bank. Therefore, if a shipwreck is exposed on the Goodwins, there could be a good chance that it will disappear just as quickly as it was found. In 2002, a diver discovered the remains of the richly laden Dutch East Indiaman Rooswijk close to the Kellet Gut on the Goodwins. He then arranged that the dive support vessel Terschelling assist in his quest to recover her cargo. Although this was done in strict secrecy the Dutch Government, as owners of the wreck and cargo, was also involved in the venture. In the summer of 2005, the Terschelling anchored over the wreck and recovered the boxes of silver bullion. Onboard were archaeologists to recover and record artefacts

for the Dutch museums. The immense value of these finds, academically as well as financial, have not yet been totalled. Nevertheless, they would have lain unnoticed, possibly forever, on the Goodwin Sands if it had not been for the dedication of the lone diver that discovered the wreck. The Rooswijk was made a protected wreck site on 18th January, 2007 by the government and English Heritage to enable no unauthorised diving to take place. It is now one of the five historic and protected shipwrecks on the Goodwins. David Chamberlain

Guide Dogs Guide Dogs began on 6 October 1931 and the first four guide dogs were all German Shepherds (photo above). Since then, Guide Dogs have created over 40,000 partnerships, that is matching a guide dog with someone who has sight loss. We recognise that the ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life, yet thousands of people who are blind or partially sighted never leave home alone. Guide Dogs empower visually impaired people to do that and they rely on the generous support of the public to fund the guide dogs service. We breed and train 1300 guide dogs a year and there are currently 211 guide dog owners in Kent and E. Sussex, all of whom are supported by staff at Guide Dogs in Maidstone. It costs £5 per day to support each working guide dog partnership and Guide Dogs bears the lifetime cost of every guide dog, from birth to retirement, which is around £50,000. Guide Dogs recognise that volunteers are the life blood of the charity and are very grateful for the thousands of volunteers who generously give their time to undertake a variety of roles be it a Puppy Walker, Boarder, to Fundraising branch
member. In Kent and East Sussex, we have fifteen fundraising branches where volunteers not only create and implement fundraising activities but support the charity in generating awareness of sight loss through our programme of campaigns. Since the 1970s, Guide Dogs have been represented by a fundraising branch that covers Deal, Sandwich and Dover. It is currently led by Liz Sykes. “Hello, I’m Liz and I have a Guide Dog called Ulla. We’re the Deal, Dover & Sandwich fundraising Branch Organisers. I say “we “because I know I couldn’t do what I do without Ulla, not just for Guide Dogs either but every day. She makes anything possible for me. We’re part of a wonderful branch that works as a team; we’re enthusiastic and get great pleasure from the fundraising activities we organise. Being a branch with a busy year of events, we meet once a month to share ideas, plan events and discuss opportunities that come our way this could be anything from the donation of an item for us to sell or, the news that a company or a local group have chosen us as their charity of the year. This year we’re proud to say that the Hoodeners have done so and we’re looking forward to working with them. continued overleaf

Guide Dogs (continued) We currently have a team of eight members as well as a band of vital helpers who assist us at our events although we are always in need of an extra pair of hands especially as we want to increase the number of our fundraising events in the area. Our team bring many skills and interests to the branch and this creates ideas for fundraising. Our latest event was initiated by a member who loves music and the arts so he suggested a Variety Show. He secured numerous local artistes, all of whom gave their time for free and as a team we worked together on all the logistics. The day was enjoyed by many people and we raised a fantastic £658 for Guide Dogs. Although raising money for a wonderful cause is important, it’s not just about fundraising It’s about getting out into the community and talking to people about Guide Dogs and generating awareness about sight loss. Guide Dogs have a network of trained speakers who are either puppy walkers or guide dog owners, who, with their guide dog, visit schools and groups to do talks. This is backed up by a on-line resources for teachers and group leaders where further information on sight loss, how we train our dogs can be downloaded. The link to these resources is www.guidedogs.org.uk/schools. Looking back to 2012, we were chosen by staff at Sainsbury’s in Deal as their charity of the year. They successfully raised enough to “Name a Puppy”, a fundraising initiative where if you raise £5000 you not only choose a name for a Guide Dogs puppy but follow the pup’s progress during its time with its Puppy Walker and you meet your pup too! Sainsbury’s chose the name Mac, who in fact, was the first puppy to be “walked” in our district. Since then Guide Dogs have been recruiting further puppy walkers in this area and if you would like to know more about becoming a Puppy Walker, please let me know. In 2013 we were the local KM groups charity of the year and this gave us the chance to get the word out about what we do. Many opportunities came our way from this including

local reporter Beth Robson doing a blind folded guide dog walk and reporting her experience in the local Mercury. Later in the year, our MP Charlie Elphicke took up this challenge too. It certainly made him think about the challenges met by visually impaired people in everyday life! This year we have a local man who has been inspired to take part in one of the national events Guide Dogs offer supporters. He is cycling in the Prudential London-Surrey 100 mile marathon to raise funds for us having seen the life changing difference that happened when his good friend became a guide dog owner. The nice thing about being a fundraiser is that you see so much good, not just by our members but from the public too. These people never cease to amaze us with their interest, generosity and heart-warming gestures. Each year, my branch aims to raise £15 000 a year and we just couldn’t do it without these amazing people. We are so proud to be part of Guide Dogs and of our achievements. I hope that whilst heading this branch, I will welcome more members who will proactively help with the work of the Branch. Guide Dogs receive no government funds, and the life changing impact that Ulla and my first guide dog Willow had on my life, means that branches like mine must continue to thrive if we are to make a vital contribution to the provision of the Guide Dogs service, which costs £48 million a year to run.

5 minutes with...
Deal Carnival In this edition of 5 Minutes With… we took some time to speak with John and Rosemary Tickey who are involved with the Deal Carnival. We talk about the history of the Regatta, how the event has evolved since its formation and what we can look forward to on the July 2015 Carnival. When was the Deal Carnival formed? It was founded in 1826 by the Duke of Clarence. It was decided that it would bring back an interest and help with tourism in to the town. He also founded the Royal Downs Regatta, the Royal Cowles Regatta and the Royal Henley Regatta so all 3 were in the same year. In the 1920s it changed its name to the Royal Deal Regatta and it was around this time that the events were split. Then in 1952 it changed its name from The Royal Deal Regatta to The Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown Regatta. When did you and your wife become involved with the carnival? My-self and my wife Rosie took over in 1995, we were aware that there were problems with the carnival, when we saw an article on the front page of the Mercury saying that the carnival would have to close because of the lack of a Chairman and the lack of volunteers. There was very little interest in anyone putting themselves forward for the Chairman position, in fact I was the only person, and at that time we only had 4 committee members.
Are there as many Carnivals running in Kent as in years gone by? When you look at the number of carnivals running today it’s dramatically fallen. In 1996 there were 25 Carnivals in Kent alone and presently today I would doubt we have as many as 10 left. In the last 20 years we’ve lost so many. Why have the number of Carnivals in Kent Fallen? One problem we have is finance. The cost of health and safety, liability insurance and road traffic controls are just some of the things we need to raise money for. We attract a phenomenal amount of people to Deal, anywhere form 10,000-20,000 in any one night. It is the biggest Regatta in the South East. We have so many events throughout the week, it’s now recognised as regatta week. We have the Teddy Bears Picnic, a disco and fireworks. We also have a 10k Run that’s being organised by Deal Tri. The community always pulls together to make the week a massive success. This year’s Carnival will be held on 30 July.

The Kent Miner’s Statue The Miner’s Statue was commissioned by the Central Electricity Board (C.E.B.), the sculpture was Mr. H.R. Philips and it was originally bound for Ferry Bridge power station in Yorkshire. However, it was later decided to site the statue outside Richborough Power Station to commend the miners of Kent for recognition of all their hard work and toil in keeping the power station working and producing electricity all year round. When the station closed the C.E.B donated the statue to Dover District Council (D.D.C), with Dover Museum being the curators, they then had to find an appropriate place for the statue to be sited. They sort guidance from the former Kent miners, who in turn consulted all the Kent mining communities and quickly realised that everyone wanted to offer a new home for the statue. They began to realise that the statue held great importance to all miners and their families. The decision was finally made to place the statue next to the National Coal Board offices along Dover Seafront, because this was the only neutral place in the Kent mining area, at that time. The decision helped to avoid ny clashes within the communities themselves, but apart from miners and the people of Dover, many people were very disappointed with the decision. However, grumblings and groans continued over the years, in conversations, at meetings and in the media. Many people not even from the mining communities in Kent asked what is all the fuss about. Why is the statue so special to the miners of Kent? The statue has always been more than just a figure of a miner. When miners, members of a mining families and friends of miners all look at the statue, they can see their father’s, son’s, brother’s, work comrade’s and more. When they look at this statue it stirs many memories, from their time at the collieries, recalling good times and sad times. This statue carries the history of Kent miners within it and with the Kent pits having closed one by one, culminating with the closure of the Coalfield in 1989. The statue 26

remains today as a very important part of our Kent mining heritage. The Coal Board Offices eventually closed, leaving the statue isolated on the seafront in Dover. Visitors and even people who have moved into the area, were asking, why is there a statue of a miner on the seafront looking out across our channel. From this the Move The Miner Committee was established to help find a new location for the statue and Gary Cox arranged the first meeting, by holding a press release at the statue on the 28th July 2006. We informed the public via local media, of our intentions and invited any person wishing to help with this campaign to join us. A meeting with members of Aylesham Parish Council was arranged and it was decided at that meeting to ask all mining areas to choose as many representatives as this wished, to join the campaign. Letters and emails were sent to all Parish & Town Councils, inviting them to join the campaign and seek permission to move the statue. The first committee meeting was held at Betteshanger Welfare club on 6th September 2006 presided by Chairperson, Gary Cox, Secretary & Treasurer, Peter Holden and Committee Members, Helen Bartello, Cyril Rogers, Christine Haggart, Steve Stevenson, Lawrence Knight and Phil Sutcliffe (Vice-Chairperson), who were all duly elected. Kent County Councillor Mrs. Eileen Rowbotham was voted on as advisor to the campaign and the ‘Move The Miner Campaign’ began. It was decided that Gary Cox Magazine when responding to advertisements
www.communityad.co.uk
& Peter Holden should arrange a meeting with Dover District Council to inquire if they would allow the statue to be moved and under what conditions would they allow the statue to be moved. Dover District Council were contacted and able to set up a meeting with Mr. Roger Walton, who would be our Dover District Council liaise officer for this Campaign. Dover Museum were the curators of the statue and were willing to allow the statue to be moved as long as it stayed within the boundaries of the Dover District and that we achieved all provisos put to us by DDC. The provisos given to us by Mr. Walton were as follows, (1) The cost of moving the Statue would be met entirely by the committee through grants and fundraising, (2) That any new site put forward would have to receive planning permission and be safe and secure (3) That we must consult all Mining Communities and that all mining communities must agree to the new site. He voiced concerns that if areas of the communities began to disagree with the moving of the statue then the statue would stay at Dover. Two sites were considered by the Committee - Aylesham Village Square was one and on the A258 at the entrance to Fowlmead Park was the other. It was clear to the committee that the A258 site, on the Miners Way Trail, was the best new site for the statue. The statue would be on the Miners Way Trail and be seen by thousands of people, encouraging them with the placing of information stones around the statue, to visit all the Kent mining communities. The Kent Miners Statue was officially unveiled on 30th July 2011, along with the list of fatalities that occurred of all the miners, who were involved in working in the Kent Coalfield. At the unveiling were many of the local former Kent miners and their families, along with Margaret Adamson, who played the pipes and the Reverend Deacon Jed Watkins and others who read at the service and during the Blessing. The daughter and son-in-law of the late, Geoff Almond, laid a wreath, while a special Kent Miners Wreath was laid to commemorate those miners who have since passed. Please mention
