The Timeball Tower The history of this remarkable building is probably all too well known to you. At the height of our naval supremacy, when we ranked with Plymouth, Chatham & Portsmouth as a Roadstead Anchorage, the Timeball Tower was vital in letting mariners set their instruments when the ball fell at 1pm. It was once a shutter and later a semiphore station linking Deal to the Admiralty, for a quick dash out of port to attack or defend from the enemy. Only 3 others remain in the UK including Greenwich, but if you look up its history it still remains one of the most famous in the world. Any photographs of Deal will inevitably include the tower and it no longer standing sentinel over our town is unthinkable. Every New Year’s Eve thousands of us town people wait for the ball to fall from the top of the Timeball Tower to herald a New Year, with all its promise. It is in danger of closing due to lack of funds. The gallant Timeball committee are struggling to keep it open and they need help and help fast.

I intend in my last two terms as chairman (that’s if I am voted in next AGM for my last term!), to do my utmost to assist. I am sure most of you would not wish to see this most famous of Deal buildings close and to fall into disrepair. I am willing to listen and welcome any thoughts or ideas on this predicament. I have suggested a membership be set up throughout the town, which would include entry to the tower. I have offered to facilitate this membership. I firmly believe that the Deal Society should do its best to support, amongst its other roles, any such cause in town so vital to our past before it is too late. We supported the Astor, we are helping to keep The Regent in the public conscience. We must also now help the Timeball Tower.

In this age of everything electronic and digital, with digital cameras boasting functions and gizmos that are mind blowing, and cameras built into most smart phones, it is a little humbling to realise that some of the members of the Deal and District Camera Club still use wet film and go to the trouble of presenting their work in the form of transparent slides, and cyanotypes. These skills were of course the norm, back in 1977 when the club was established. In fact the first digital cameras only became available in fairly recent times. Looking back on photography shows just how fast technology has moved on in recent years. The club aims to promote the awareness and understanding, appreciation and practice of both traditional and digital photography. Today it consists of around 40 members who are from a broad cross section of the local community, both men and women of all

& District Camera Club ages. Some of the members are professional or retired professional photographers working within various industries, from Civil engineering, to wedding photography. At the other end of the scale we have members who only recently picked up a camera for the first time. Many people including myself joined the club to broaden their photography skills. Some will go on to gain formal qualifications in the subject. This is something that the club aims to assist in. Being affiliated to the KCPA (Kent County Photographic Association) the club has access to the wider photographic community. The club meets at 7:30pm every Wednesday evening from September to June, and there is always a full program of events. This includes lectures from external experts covering photography, printing of images, digital processing software and much more. There are various competitions, both in house and inter club which run throughout the season, and various hands on practical sessions when members can pass on different techniques and skill to each other. There is always someone who will know how, when members need help with their photography.
Joanna Thompson New members are always welcome, it doesn’t matter if you are a professional or a novice, and you don’t actually have to own a camera. Come along to one of our meetings and find out if photography is for you. You will even get a cup of tea! Paul Glanville

Tony praised the club for all their hard work in gaining the award, and said that it shows the commitment of the club’s coaches and staff.

Alison Turner said everyone in the club worked together to achieve the award and they are all very proud to receive it. It shows just how much hard work the volunteers have put in and continue to put into the club. Everyone helps on a voluntary basis, and to see how the players grow and improve is very rewarding.
Deal All Stars FC is a club for people with disabilities, formed in 2005, and the coaches and staff all support and encourage players to reach their potential. These volunteer coaches are all FA trained and they are always learning and striving to help players to move forward in football and socially. Steven Chapman and Matthew Spain played for the club for many years, and they both achieved FA level 1 coach status last year. They are both now coaching the team under the guidance of the other coaches, and they have just finished their FA disability coaching course.

The music of
Smugglers It was around 10 years ago when it all started for Will Greenham and Smugglers Records. Will, from Deal, was really keen to boost the music scene in the local area, so when the opportunity arose to bring together a collective of local bands including Syd Arthur, Body Machine, and his own band, putting on music nights at venues throughout Deal such as the old Quarterdeck, he grabbed it with both hands. They put on various regular nights, normally always exceeding capacity, and at this point Will realised that Deal was crying out for good, original music in the town. In 2007, after losing a significant amount of money in a business deal designed to secure a permanent music venue for the local community, Will decided that he couldn’t let this blow knock him down, especially as it was this exact time when he was forming the band Cocos Lovers. Instead of letting this get him down, the band used this inspiration and wrote arguably their biggest hit Time to Stand which is about not worrying about money or material things. It was at this point that Will and the band made a life changing decision: “We decided to take our kids out of school, all of us give up our jobs and we went travelling around Europe, busking with a big caravan, staying in lots of squats and communes. We also 12

learnt to play music better while we were busking on the streets, and that’s really how Cocos was formed; a bunch of friends playing in squats and communes, and we did that for 6 months, travelling through Germany, France, Switzerland, and Spain, where we actually ended up staying for a while. It was a place called Riberola, just south of Barcelona, where we also decided to put on a festival which is still going today”. After being away for half a year, the band returned to Deal and noticed that the music scene had changed drastically. “When we came back, this whole new folk scene had kicked off, and that’s exactly what we had developed while we were away - acoustic instruments, lots of harmonies, and people were really into it. There was a massive buzz around us, especially when we were supporting Mumford and Sons and the music scene in the local area started becoming a really big thing”. Shortly after this, Cocos Lovers finished recording their first album Johannes but there was a problem. “When we released our first record we needed a name to put on it but we didn’t have one, so we created our own fake label: Smugglers Records. Will Varley (who had just come out of a really weird time because he was with an indie band who would demo with all the major Magazine when responding to advertisements
www.communityad.co.uk labels) came down to Deal and loved the whole scene. He sent me a message on the Smugglers MySpace page asking how he could sign a record deal with us, so we told him there were no contracts, it was a fake label and we just all help each other out. He then came on board, made the website and we started putting on a regular night at the Astor…within a year we were getting 150 people a week!”. This success continued to grow as a fan who attended many of Cocos Lovers’ gigs approached Will Greenham offering him a venue to put on a festival. At first he thought it was just a pipe dream, but eventually he went to look at the land on offer; “There was an enormous christmas tree forest, a paddock and a hawthorn tree forest… all overgrown. This was in June and we were doing a Smugglers Take Over with Johnny Flynn headlining at Lounge on the Farm Festival in July. We all really wanted to put on our own festival so we just went for it and put on the first Smugglers Festival in the August of that year!”. Within just a couple of months, the smugglers managed to clear the land, get the venue ready to put on a professional music festival, get bands involved,

and by the second year the festival had sold out! Will’s love and passion for real, original music has been a major driving force behind the success, and on April 1st, after many discussions between Will Greenham and Will Varley, they decided to put down musical roots in Deal by opening Smugglers Record Shop on King Street. This amazing shop stocks a huge range of music on vinyl and CD, as well as record players and local beers and ales. You’ll occasionally find one off music events going on in the shop, so please visit them for details. Over the past 10 years, Will and the Smugglers have managed to transform the local music scene in Deal, which now has plenty of live, original music, a fantastic music venue in The Lighthouse, a local festival each year, and now a record shop.

The Cory Band at Charl Just before Christmas last year the world’s number one ranked brass band, the Cory Band, got in touch with a proposal to put on a concert in Dover on their way back from a Brass Festival in Lille in the middle of January this year. Now, it is not every day that one gets such a request from the best in the world to come to Dover, so phone calls were made and initial arrangements agreed on what became a very busy few days in the run-up to Christmas. A training and inspirational element was added to the proposed day of the concert to add benefit for the many young brass players that we have in our local area and suddenly it was all systems go. Dover Town Council proved to be immensely supportive and helped set up an online ticketing facility, provided promotional material and support and assisted in the search for a venue. On 4th January, Charlton Church offered their facilities and we were able to start selling tickets on 5th January. Without the support of Dover Town Council, Charlton Church and members

of the local brass playing fraternity, the concert would not have been able to proceed. At 2pm on Sunday 17th January, the youth masterclass began - what an inspiration the principle players of the Cory Band were to our young people! Hearing some of the class and rehearsal that went with it from both inside and outside the venue, it sounded fantastic and it was hard to believe that all of the young people in the masterclass were 18 or under. In total we had 30 young people who took part in the afternoon and then went on to share a stage with the Cory Band during the concert which followed. People started to arrive for the concert soon after 3pm. These were not just locals from the Dover, Deal and Folkestone area, but also from further afield. Some had even travelled to Dover for the afternoon from Bexhill, just to see the Cory Band. The concert kicked off in style at 3:30pm and just got better and better. About 130 people were blown away by the skill and musicianship demonstrated by the band. The soloists were out

lton Church of this world and those of us that play ourselves were awestruck and amazed. It is difficult to put into words how good the Cory Band are and how enjoyable and uplifting there performance was. Their Director of Music, Philip Harper, got the audience involved using social media and during the last set of music before the interval invited members of the audience to tweet about their experience of the music, promising to read out the best tweets during the second half. After the interval, our young people took to the stage, joining the principle players of the Cory Band to perform two pieces of music conducted by Philip Harper. For many of them, it is an experience that they will never forget and a memory that will be fondly cherished as they grow older. For the audience, it was a real treat to hear our young people playing at their very best in a performance that was worthy of the company that they were in. The rest of the second half of the concert was as memorable and varied as the first with yet more fantastic solo performances and ensemble pieces. Nobody really wanted the concert to come to an end, and there were plenty of calls for an encore after the last programmed piece of music. The Cory Band certainly did not disappoint and launched into a wonderful arrangement of a modern pop/rock song originally by Queen. Even this ‘finale’ proved insufficient for an audience who were hungry for more and the band duly obliged by closing out the concert with a rendition of the William Tell overture played at breakneck speed but with a depth of subtlety and skill that took the audience’s breath away. Alas, all good things come to an end and such was the way with this concert. But, we are arranging a return visit and hope to be able to see them again in April performing their European Championship programme and sharing a stage with local youth and, for a few pieces, with the Eythorne Silver Band.

A new Model Boat Room has been created on the first floor of the old Stable Block. It brings together some of the detailed model boats from around the museum plus several large scale models donated by local people this year. A model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, a 17th century British warship built by the late Alan Pearce, has been donated by his daughter Joanne Turpin and family from Kingsdown. In July, a collection donated by the family of the late Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Collingwood Sherman and his wife Evelyn will be on display. Lt Col Sherman was based at the Royal Marines Depot Deal as a young officer. In 1942 he was tasked with organising the ceremony for the surrender of the Japanese in Singapore. In August there will be an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the East Kent Road Car Company. Popular Deal local history writer, Colin Varrall, is organising the display which will run from 2nd - 31st August.

On Friday 13 February 1998, at precisely 13.00 hours, the charter boat Bonaventure set sail with thirteen people aboard, in search of the famous local ghost ship the Lady Luvibund which was, allegedly, wrecked on the Goodwin Sands on that very date in 1748.
The Legend of the
Lady Luvibund Along with the gaggle of ever-expectant ghost hunters there was also a journalist and photographer from the Independent on board, marking the nationwide interest that had been stirred by this tale of love, betrayal and, ultimately, death. In 1953, author George Goldsmith-Carter included a chapter in his book The Goodwin Sands which began with the evoking sentence “Tradition has it that the Goodwin Sands are haunted”. Goldsmith-Carter went on to tell how the schooner, Lady Luvibund, was deliberately steered onto the Sands, killing everyone on

board. Driven to murder after falling in love with his captain’s new bride, first mate John Rivers manoeuvred the ship into the treacherous Goodwins. Conjuring up a vivid picture of the wretched vessel’s failing moments, GoldsmithCater wrote “Above the tragedy and din of a dying ship sounded the hideous cacophony of a madman’s laughter.” On February thirteenth 1798, the author reported, Captain James Westlake of the Edenbridge sighted the vessel. Again on the same date fifty years later in 1848, Deal hovellers sighted a schooner breaking up on the Goodwins. Once more, Goldsmith-Carter noted,

on February thirteenth 1898 “shore watchers saw the schooner pile up on the same spot on the Sands”. Goldsmith-Carter records no evidence of anything being seen in 1948. Nevertheless, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who had read the story and were determined to embark upon, what the Daily Mail termed the “Riddle of the Sands”. Along with the Bonaventure sailing around the Goodwins, over two hundred ‘ghost busters’ gathered on Deal Pier at midnight 1998, eagerly awaiting the ship’s return. Needless to say nothing materialised, apart from the odd cold. Within the space of a couple of weeks, Deal had unexpectedly turned into the focus of national attention, regularly appearing in the media, along with featuring on the children’s programme, Blue Peter. However, regardless of the excitement generated on that day, the story of the Lady

Luvibund cannot be true for several reasons. The only mention of the schooner in an updated version of the Lloyd’s List (as compiled by Richard Larn), is attributed to George Goldsmith-Carter from his aforementioned book. Other than this, no documentation of the schooner exists. Furthermore, if all aboard the vessel had died, who exactly would have recorded the events? Moreover, no evidence has been uncovered so far regarding the three sightings of the ghost ship, other than that noted by Goldsmith-Carter. The only ghostly noises that might have been heard on February thirteenth 1998 would not have been the ‘madman’s laughter’ of the murderer Rivers, but that of George Goldsmith-Carter having a good old chuckle at the expense of all those gazing expectantly out to the Goodwins for the ghost ship that never even existed. Small Group Tuition with Bright Young Things Growing classroom sizes and rigid curricula make it increasingly difficult for schools to ensure every child receives the education they need. For some, not enough time is spent on the basics, leading to a lack of solid foundations in core subjects. For others, the absence of a two-way conversation leads to a loss of verbal eloquence or, worse, a lack of interest.

Individualised learning is championed at sixth form and in further education, so why shouldn’t children benefit from the same level of academic support during their early informative years? Studies have shown that small group sessions enable interaction and maintain engagement, and with time to devote to each child, teachers can ensure that everyone has a solid grasp of the important principles. As limited government funding makes it near-impossible to implement changes in schools, tuition centres like Bright Young Things are stepping in to shore up the gaps and reignite children’s natural love of learning. By keeping class numbers down, tutors ensure that every child learns at the right speed and that they develop the confidence to think critically and independently. Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre offers high-quality supplementary education from 6 years right the way up to A Levels. As well as being experts in 11 plus exam preparation, we also run a daily Maths & English Members Club (ages 6 to 12), provide GCSE and A level tuition, and offer holiday workshops in creative writing, debating, problem solving and more. Importantly, we organise regular mock exams. Our courses aim to provide students with the tools to think independently and analytically. We encourage our students to aim high, help them discover their true potential, and work to maximise their exam success. Bright Young Things is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am to 7.30pm. All our tutors are highly-experienced and DBS-checked. We are OFSTED registered and accept childcare vouchers. We offer free initial assessments with full analytical feedback, to map your child's current level and create a tailor-made programme to suit you.

Deal Town Rangers Youth football club Deal Town Rangers FC enters an exciting new phrase of its history with a link up with Deal’s senior club, Deal Town FC. The link up will not involve full integration and will initially be for a 12-month trial period, but both clubs are confident that this link will be successful. Two of our teams will play under the banner of Deal Town FC to enable them to play in the Kent Youth League, which requires senior club status. Access to the ground, clubhouse and facilities will be free for club players and at a reduced rate for accompanying parents. It is hoped that all the Deal Town Rangers teams from 14 upwards will have a chance to play on the pitch during the season. At least one weekend festival will be held during the summer when every team will have a chance to participate.

We will be looking to use the clubhouse for presentations and other club events such as club meetings. The senior coaches of Deal Town will provide our own managers with coaching assistance and expertise. We will also look to sponsor at least one game and supply ball boys from our club. There will be further projects to be notified in due course. For Deal Town we should provide important income whist we have use of the facilities.
Season 2015/16 Its been a positive start to the current season with already one of our under 14 teams reaching the East Kent Youth League cup final, hopefully to be played at Deal Town FC. Several other clubs are in championship honours places with a good chance of bringing silverware back to Deal. It is however the

participation that counts and that we have 20 teams, both boys and girls playing every week, is the main measure of success for this club. We must also include our ‘veterans’ team of managers, coaches and parents. Particularly pleasing is when one of newest teams, having been outplayed during the first part of the season, gains its first win, which is really encouraging for the players. Whatever the score our players go out each week to do their best in the black & white hoops of the club and we are proud of them.
Coaches & Referees Deal Town Rangers are extremely fortunate to have young players in the age 16 to 18 age group who still play for the club who are taking on coaching and managing the younger age groups from 6 to 11. Two of our recent 18-yearold players are taking on older age groups. Without these dedicated lads the club would struggle to fill these roles. All have passed their FA Level 1 Coaching Certificate, which includes First Aid & Safeguarding Children modules. Please mention
