Festival 2016

Deal Festival of Music and the Arts is constantly growing, and ambition and aspiration drive our purpose. However, the values of engagement, excellence and enrichment are built into everything we plan. Once again, we combine outstanding ‘established’ and ‘emerging’ artists, full in the knowledge that the energy of such events is felt by all. We are very proud to welcome major international artists such as Steven Isserlis, DFMA’s Vice President and a former Artistic Director; Guy Johnston, 2000 BBC Young Musician of the Year, performing alongside the European Union Chamber Orchestra; and Freddy Kempf 1992 BBC Young Musician of the Year and 1996 winner of Moscow’s International Tchaikovsky Competition. Following last year’s memorable ‘Spirit of Venice’ we welcome back the Academy of Ancient Music who, together with talented young musicians from Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Historical Performance department profile the

If you enjoy listening to excellent speakers talking about a wide range of topics within the scope of decorative and fine arts, then you should join us on the first Tuesday morning of the month (except July / August) at The Guildhall in historic Sandwich. Our society is under the umbrella of a national association (NADFAS), a registered charity since 1972, which has over 360 member societies in the UK and mainland Europe, all run by local volunteers. There are over 300 accredited lecturers, with over 4,000 lecture titles between them. These professional men and women have to meet strict criteria and attend a competitive selection process to ensure the ongoing high standard is maintained. We also receive an excellent quarterly magazine, the NADFAS Review that reaches an audience of over 92,000. Our meetings start with coffee being served from 10:15, which is a great opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new members. The audience is entertained by outstanding lectures giving digital presentations on subjects such as the Impressionists, Paula Rego, Freud to Hockney, William Hogarth, the Wallace Collection, Tracey Emin and many more. The programme is of interest to both men and women and is of a very high standard. The hourlong lecture whistles past as we are transported to different eras, viewing diverse talents and skills that have left their creative mark. Forthcoming titles include: • Life and Art of Sofonisba Anguissola • Georgia O’Keefe and New Mexico Magazine when responding to advertisements

www.communityad.co.uk • Grayson Perry - lecture by Ian Swankie • Vintage Fountain pens - lecture by Mark Hill The Society organises an Annual Special Interest Day when a speaker will give three lectures on a subject interspersed with coffee and lunch. We have just had a very insightful and enjoyable day learning about the Arts in Japan as compared to those in contemporary Europe. In addition, our 2015 outings included a three day visit to Oxford and its environs, a day trip to Small Hythe, Ellen Terry’s house, Lamb House in Rye and a fascinating day in Hampstead. Our summer event was at the Pines - a delightful afternoon listening to a local a cappella trio followed by afternoon tea and access to the grounds. Our 2016 programme includes a three day trip to visit the Historic Houses and Art of Norfolk and Suffolk which promises to be a real treat. NADFAS has three volunteering arms: - Church Recorders, Heritage Volunteers and Young Arts. We work with many other organisations in the arts and heritage fields, including The National Trust, English Heritage and The Art Fund. This summer we will be a sponsor supporting selected school children to attend a project run by the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate. Do please contact our Membership Secretary on 01227 728518, if you would like to visit or join our Society. The current Annual Subscriptions are £45 for a single membership and £80 for a couple. The visitors’ fee is £5 per lecture. We also hold a get-together coffee morning for new members so don’t be shy!

Exciting new play area for North Deal An exciting new play zone has been launched at North Deal Playing Field following a £110k investment in new facilities at the site. Facilities include a teenage space and an enclosed children’s play area. New play equipment includes flat and cradle swings, multi play units with climbing frames, a disabled access roundabout and a double width slide. There are also new natural play features, with a boulder climbing wall, nature trail units and grass mounds. The new equipment follows consultation by the North Deal Community Partnership to find out what type of facilities the community wanted, and follow up surveys on design options. The work has been managed by Dover District Council and funding has been through DDC using money from planning agreements. A further £10k funding has been awarded to the North Deal Community Partnership from the Tesco Bags of Help Programme to help transform the rest of the green open space into a traditional park setting. The North Deal Community Partnership is working closely with DDC to finalise a design for this investment, which is anticipated to be delivered by autumn 2016. The play zone works are part of a range of

We are very pleased to continue to move forward with innovative new play areas for the future of the district.” Ruth Pascoe from the North Deal Community Partnership said: “We are delighted to see these new community facilities. We are a group of local residents and volunteers working together to make the North Deal Playing Field a better place to play and relax, and we are very pleased to have worked in partnership with DDC on this.”

Deal Maritime & Local History Museum Buckets and spades at the ready for a trip to the seaside and a host of summer events and exhibitions at the Deal Maritime and Local History Museum in St George’s Road, Deal. A colourful retro display of buckets and spades is on show in the museum’s local history section in the upper gallery this summer, part of the impressive collection of Richard and Carol Smyth from Deal. A free pirate hat and quiz are on offer to youngsters visiting the museum and a new I-SPY quiz is also available this year. Refreshments can be enjoyed in the maritime gallery and attractive boatyard and standard toilet facilities are available and there is disabled access throughout the ground floor. A new Model Boat Room has been created in the upstairs area of the Stable Block, at the rear of the museum. Local residents have generously donated impressive and detailed model boats this year to be added to the existing collection. Retired Deal postman Colin Ashby has donated three models: HMS Snake, HMS Jalose and HMS Diana each displayed within cases made by Colin and backed with old Admiralty charts. From 5th – 30th July a collection donated by the family of the late Lt. Col. Geoffrey Collingwood Sherman and his wife Evelyn will be displayed on The Saxon King, the last of the Deal galleys.

Lt. Col. Sherman was based at the Royal Marines Depot Deal as a young officer. In 1942 he organised the ceremony for the surrender of the Japanese in Singapore. The museum also includes a permanent Royal Marines exhibition which is currently being extended. In August popular Deal local history writer Colin Varrall will be organising an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the East Kent Road Car Company. The display, on board The Saxon King, will run from Tuesday 2nd August to 31st August. A range of fundraising and social activities are held during the year including an annual strawberry tea in July, BBQ in the Boatyard, in August, Wine and Cheese Evening in September, Hallowe’en party for youngsters in October and Christmas supporters’ party in December. The museum is funded solely with income from donations, events and entry fees and is run entirely by volunteers. If you would like to become a steward, help the museum in any other way or for general enquiries please email: info@dealmuseum.co.uk. Entry fees are £3 adults, £2 children and concessions and £9 for a family ticket. The 121 hectare site on the former Betteshanger Colliery is the Hadlow Group’s ambitious economic and social regeneration project. Deal Town Rangers Youth Deal Town Rangers are a Charter Standard Community Club – the highest that can be achieved by a ‘grass roots’ club. Season conclusion It has been yet another outstanding season for Deal Town Rangers Youth football Club. Five out of eight of our competitive boys teams playing in the East Kent Youth League have won honours in their divisions, either as champions or ‘runners up’. One of those teams, under 14s, have won the first division in the League and are in the Cup Final to held at Ramsgate FC on Wednesday 4th May. However, all our 20 youth teams, which include out girls team at 14s, have played extremely well and whilst trophies are welcome it is the participation of over 300 players that is our proudest objective. In addition our veterans team of managers, coaches and parents reached the semi-final of their cup, losing out to the strongest team in the competition.

Deal Town FC Our link up with Deal Town FA has proven highly successful and has been of benefit to both clubs. Our member’s access to the ground, clubhouse and facilities free for club players and at a reduced

rate for accompanying parents, many are taking advantage of this concession. Our younger teams supply both ball boys and mascots each week. In addition, three of our teams at u13 and both u14 teams have played on the pitch this year, as well as our u18s who play in the Kent Youth League under the Deal Town banner. Two of our teams at u13 and u14 Colts hosted games against a select team from the USA in a festival atmosphere, which was enjoyed by all at the club. Our u14 Rangers played their final home match at Deal Town already crowned as champions.

Upcoming events Deal Town Rangers Summer Festival To be held on a date to be arranged at Deal Town FC in July when over a weekend all our teams will have the chance to play chosen opposition in a fun festival at the Charles Ground. France We have three teams going to France this year. Our u11s and u13s are taking part in our twin town Tournament in St Omer in June, whilst our u11s will be playing St Saulve (near Valenciennes). This club will, as last year, be sending teams to our tournament.

Sandown Castle Community Garden Group In October 2014 my husband John and I noticed what a mess Sandown Castle ruins had become as it had been overgrown and uncared for for many years. The former castle on the site in Sandown Road Deal was one of three in the area built by Henry VIII in 1539. Due to being located on the edge of the coast the eastern side became eroded by the sea in the 1700s and by the late 1800s was finally demolished. Some of the stones were removed and taken to Walmer Castle for repairs. Around the 1950s the remaining stones were placed to form tiered

Back to 2014; after much discussion and deliberation we decided to do something about the site and set up Sandown Castle Community Garden Group. We had a lot of positive response from the local community & after talking to our friends we found that most of them never walked to the castle remains as they didn’t think there was anything there to see anymore. Our vision was to create an attractive eye catching Summer display to encourage people to walk along the seafront to see what we have all been up to and find something nice at the end. Dover District Council kindly cleared some of the larger weeds from the site & we began preparing the area at the beginning of January 2015. We planted daffodil bulbs in the grass on the first tier down which were donated by our Mayor Cllr. Adrian Friend.

We tidied up the paved areas and steps and cleared the grass & weeds back to the top soil in the former flowerbeds which were last at their best in 1960s. As these hadn’t been dug for many years it was a very difficult task which took several of us over three months to complete. At the end of May 2015 with the ground fully prepared we finally planted the lower levels with geraniums which we sourced locally ready for the Summer display. There wasn’t any water on site so we had to come up with ideas on the logistics of how to get this to the garden; one of which was to use cold water loft tanks In the back of our car and enlisting the help from a neighbour near to the site who kindly donated some of their metered supply to help us water occasionally when it was exceptionally dry. In 2015 the garden was included as part of Deal’s entry into the South & South East in Bloom. Deal was awarded Silver Gilt and won its category. We are looking forward to entering several more competition categories again in 2016. We regularly fund raise to pay for plants and items we need, and several local community groups & the general public have made donations to our project. If you would like to volunteer, please do get in touch with us. We always need help digging, weeding, planting & watering or organising fund raising events. Please contact Linda & John Ford via email at sandowncastle@hotmail.com or on 07751 362949. We also have a Facebook page and closed group.

Train your brain at Bright Young Things

Summer….. Sun, sea and, for many children, exams. Although it is important not to put too much pressure on children, passing exams is important, to get into first-choice schools, obtain university places, and, ultimately, secure worthwhile employment. As our children prepare for the Kent Test, SATs, GCSEs and A Levels, Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is here to support and stretch young minds.

We run weekly courses throughout the year, from Small Group Maths & English, 11 Plus courses, one-to-one GCSE and A Level tuition, and university interview preparation assistance. For Year 5 students looking to sit the Kent Test, the summer holidays are a crucial time, and we've designed a special timetable for this period, with mock assessments and revision workshops running throughout the week. Of course, our holiday timetable isn’t aimed solely at Year 5s. We know school holidays can be a logistical nightmare for parents, and we are pleased to be able to help alleviate some of the strain with our daily Brain Gym sessions, running from 9am to 4pm, which keep children’s minds active and ensure their literacy and numeracy skills continue to develop. We also run a series of weekly workshops, in creative writing, philosophy, and debating, and dramatic storytelling sessions for younger children. Bright Young Things Canterbury Tuition Centre is committed to providing children with the confidence and ability to think independently and analytically. We like to create enjoyable learning experiences and our friendly approach encourages children to ask questions and become fully involved in their bespoke programmes, thus taking ownership of topics and gaining in confidence. Sandown Science day with Pfizer

Coastal Defences Investment

This was no ordinary school day; children in KS2 took part in 7 sessions throughout the day of hands-on investigative science. The visiting scientists told the children a little about themselves and treated them to a demonstration, along with having a go at some experiments themselves. The event gave children lots of ideas and examples about how science, in particular chemistry, is all around us in everyday life. The children were engaged and excited about different experiments like the static electricity, exothermic and endothermic reactions and dancing ooze.

£1.95M to protect homes A major £1.95m scheme to maintain coastal defences and protect local homes has been completed at Kingsdown beach – with the placement of 16 new timber groynes and around 50,000m3 of recycled shingle. The scheme was managed by Dover District Council and funded by the Environment Agency. The scheme was designed through the East Kent Engineering Partnership and approved by the Marine Management Organisation. The works are in line with the Pegwell Bay to Kingsdown Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy. This recommends the repair and renewal of the timber groynes, and continued beach recycling. The strategy recommends groyne renewal by 2018, which was brought forward due to the condition of the previous groynes. Martin Legatt, DDC Head of Assets & Building Control, said: “We are very pleased to see this major scheme in Kingsdown completed. Coastal protection and flood defences are vital for the safety of residents and the future of the district, and we continue to work closely with the EA and other partners to help protect the district.”

1723…a strange occ By George Chittenden In the year 1723 a young man, who was serving his apprenticeship in London to a master sailmaker, got leave to visit his mother to spend the Christmas holidays. She lived a few miles beyond Deal in Kent. He walked the journey, and on his arrival at Deal in the evening and feeling exhausted he applied to the landlady of a public house who was acquainted with his mother for a night’s lodging. The public house was the long since demolished Hoop and Griffin, which stood in Beach Street. Her house was full and every bed occupied; but she told him if he would sleep with her uncle, who had lately come ashore, and was the boatswain of an Indiaman. He was glad to accept the offer, and after spending the evening with his new comrade they retired to rest. In the middle of the night he awoke feeling unwell and desiring to take the fresh air. He awakened his bedfellow and asked him the way to the yard. The latch being out of order he asked

26

him to take a knife out of his pocket with which he could raise the latch. The young man did as he was directed, and after staying half an hour in the yard he returned to bed, but was much surprised to find his companion had risen and gone. Being eager to visit his mother and friends he also rose before day, and continued his journey arriving home at 7am. The landlady, who had been told of his intention to depart early was not surprised; but not seeing her uncle in the morning she went to call him. She was dreadfully shocked to find the bed stained with blood, and every enquiry after her uncle was in vain. The alarm now became general and on further examination marks of blood were traced from the bedroom into the street, and at intervals down to the edge of the shoreline. Rumour was immediately busy, and suspicion soon fell of course on the young man that he had committed the murder and thrown the body into the sea. A warrant was issued and he was taken that evening at his mother’s house. On examination marks of blood were discovered on his shirt and trousers, and in his pocket was a knife and a remarkable silver coin, both of which the landlady swore were her uncle’s property, and

www.communityad.co.uk

currence that she saw them in his possession on the evening he retired to rest with the young man. On these strong circumstances the unfortunate youth was found guilty. He related all the above circumstances in his defence; but he could not account for the marks of blood on his person, unless he got them when he returned to the bed, nor could he account for the silver coin in his possession; his story was not credited. The certainty of the boatswain’s disappearance; the blood on the beach, traced from his bedroom, were too evident signs of him being murdered; and even the judge was so convinced of his guilt that he ordered the execution to take place three days later. When the rope was placed around his neck the youth declared his innocence, and persisted in it with such affecting asseverations that many pitied him, though none doubted the justness of his sentence. The executioners of those days were not so expert at their trade as modern ones, nor were drops and platforms introduced. The young man was very tall; his feet occasionally touched the ground, and some of his friends who surrounded the gallows contrived to give the body some support as he was suspended. After being cut down, those friends bore the body speedily away in a coffin, and in the course of a few hours animation was restored and the youth was saved. When he was able to move, his friends insisted on him leaving the country and never returning. He accordingly travelled by night to Portsmouth where he entered on board a man-of-war to sail to a distant part of the world; and as he changed his name and disguised his person his story was never discovered. After a few years of service, during which his exemplary conduct was the cause of his promotion through the lower grades, he was at last made a master’s mate, and his ship being paid off in the West Indies, he, with a few more of the crew, were transferred to another man-ofwar, which had just arrived, short of hands from another station. L When he climbed aboard her deck he froze on

the spot, overcome with feelings of astonishment, and then delight, when almost the first man he came across on board of his new ship was the boatswain for whose murder he had been tried, condemned and executed for five years before. Nor was the surprise of the old boatswain less when he heard the story. Then began an unusual conversation between two men that fate had entwined. An explanation of all the mysterious circumstances took place. It came to light that the boatswain had been bled for a pain in the side by a barber, unknown to his niece, on the day of the young man’s arrival in Deal and when the young man had awoken him and retired to the yard he found the bandage had come off his arm during the night, and that blood was flowing afresh. Being alarmed he rose to go to the barber who lived across the street; but a press gang laid hold of him just as he left the public-house. They hurried him to the place where their boat was in waiting; a few minutes brought them on-board a frigate which raised anchor and set sail for the West Indies, and he omitted ever writing home to account for his sudden disappearance.

www.communityad.co.uk On their return to England as friends this wonderful explanation was told by both men to the judge and jury that tried the case, and the youth’s innocence was finally restored. At the time this story made a great noise in Kent, but as the years past this incredible story disappeared into the pages of history. A story that proves truth is often much stranger than fiction. This story was provided to us by Kent’s Historian, Novelist and Storyteller, George Chittenden, and if you would like to find out more about the author or purchase one of his books, please visit the following website: www.shieldcrest.co.uk/george-chittendenbooks.html

These were the chief circumstances explained by the two friend thus strangely met. The silver coin being found in the possession of the young man could only be accounted for by conjecture-that when the boatswain gave him the knife in the dark, it is probable, as the coin was in the same pocket, it stuck between the blades of the knife, and in the same manner became unconsciously the strongest proof against him.

Sandown school Hindu Festival On Wednesday 23rd March 2016, pupils and staff at Sandown school had their own Hindu festival. As part of Sandown’s British Values and RE lessons they have been learning about Holi, the festival of colour. Everyone attended a whole school assembly to learn about the origins of the festival; how it is celebrated and the folk stories linked to the festival. Children came into school dressed in white, were given cups of paint and went onto the playground to throw paint at each other. The pupils especially enjoyed being mischievous and throwing paint over their teachers.

Having trouble with your toenails, diabetic

Children then returned to class and discussed their learning and presented this in a number of ways including creating their own newspaper reports, art or stories. Mr Reynolds, Deputy Head: ‘This is the first time Holi has been celebrated at Sandown School.’ Miss Knight, British Values Co-ordinator: ‘It was a brilliant opportunity to bring learning to life. It links very well with our British Values, learning about other faiths and cultures. It’s been wonderful to see the enjoyment that Sandown children had.’
