Dog Fouling

www.communityad.co.uk

The Fireplace Showroom

Dog fouling is unsightly, unpleasant and can occasionally cause toxocariasis in humans which can lead to serious illness and even blindness. If you do not clear up after your dog, you could also be fined.

The maximum penalty for committing an offence is £1000 in a magistrates’ court. Alternatively an authorised officer may issue a fixed penalty notice. The amount of the fixed penalty can be set by the local authority and is usually between £50 and £80. If you have any information about a dog walker who fails to pick up report it to your local council or a dog warden. Try to provide as much detail as possible so that appropriate action can be taken.

Don’t turn a blind eye! Bag it and bin it!

Age UK Faversham Age UK Faversham has been established for nearly sixty years, starting in a small way and known as Old Peoples’ Welfare we have grown and developed over the years to the large independent charity we are today. We deliver a wide range of help and support to the older people of Faversham and surrounding areas. We have two day centres, (one in Faversham town centre, the other in Teynham) where we offer social opportunities, freshly cooked two course meals and many other activities and entertainment. Our information and advice service advises on a range of issues; a large majority of people need assistance with benefit checks and applying for benefits. We have an Advocacy service, Dementia outreach, a Care Navigator who helps people to remain independent in their own homes for longer. We provide extensive domiciliary care, including personal care and home help; we have a hot meal delivery service seven days per week and a very active befriending scheme. Our purpose built mini buses transport our clients to and from our centres, for many of our clients the only time they go out is when they come to our centres. If you

or a family member would like to find out more about our services, please contact us on 01795 532766. We are able to offer the services that we do as we have assistance from a team of enthusiastic volunteers who help paid staff members in a variety of ways. It may sound corny but we really couldn’t manage without volunteers. We are currently looking for new volunteers to join our friendly team, would you be able to help with any of the following: • Assist in our day centre (helping with activities, chatting to clients, serving refreshments) • Help on our mini bus as a transport attendant • Join our befriending scheme and regularly visit an older person for a chat • Help in our charity shop on Saturdays • Assist in our coffee shop

Brents Community Association The Brents Community Association is open to anyone who lives, works or has an interest in the Brents/North Preston/Davington area of Faversham. It follows up on residents’ concerns, represents the area on the steering group for the Faversham Creek Neighbourhood Plan, and has taken the lead on liaison with the Environment Agency and other organisations over flood defences, following serious tidal flooding in December 2013. We also organise local events. Meetings are every 4-6 weeks at The Brents Tavern, Upper Brents, Faversham ME13 7DP. If you’d like to be kept informed by email about meetings and events, contact us on brentscommunityassociation@gmail.com. On 12/13 July the BCA is organising activities on the Brents side of the Creek for the annual Faversham Nautical Festival. It should be a great weekend, with lots going on: a mix of really interesting stalls, food and drink, a bouncy castle, face-painting, music…and the BCA, in conjunction with Amicus Horizon housing association, will also be inviting locals of all ages to join in a photography project called ‘Picture the Creek’ - with a chance to win prizes. The closing date is the end of September, so there’s plenty of time to send in your contributions. Find out more at www.picturethecreek.wordpress.com

Activities Appalachian Clogging Appalachian clogging is an exciting and lively style of percussive dance originating from the Southern Appalachian mountains of America. It’s similar to Irish and tap dancing, and has a very relaxed feel in the body. It has quite a history - it’s the Grandma of tap dancing and is an early fusion of different dance styles. In that region, about 200 years ago, there was a mix of people and cultures - the Native American dances got mixed with European step dance and West African influences brought a syncopated rhythm to the steps. We always dance to live music and have a

fabulous band playing authentic Old Time music on banjos and fiddles! If you’re interested, come down and watch a class or join us on Thursday 3rd July from 8-9pm at the Guildhall where we’ll be dancing in the street for our end-of-term bash! Funding helps Faversham Town Football Club “Grow the Game”

Faversham Town Football Club have been provided a grant from the Football Foundation. A statement said: “Grassroots football in Faversham has been given a helping hand following a £3,000 Grow the Game grant, from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.” The grant will allow Faversham Town Football Club to field 2 new teams next season. A new Under 21 team in the Ryman Isthmian Under 21 League and a new Under 18 team in the Kent Youth League. To help develop these players new coaches will be appointed and 2 new coaches will be trained The key strength of Grow the Game is that its participation increases are sustainable rather than transient. Its grants create a solid infrastructure of teams and newlytrained coaches in which new people can start playing the sport, rather than simply providing temporary activity sessions, which are then vulnerable to drops in participation once the programme ends. This year sees a particular emphasis placed on increasing the number of teams and players from the Under-15 age bracket and above, to address the decline in participation that has traditionally occurred as young people leave school and college. The other key focus is on growing the numbers of girls’, women’s and disability teams. The Premier League and The FA fund the Grow the Game scheme with £1.5m, which is delivered by the Football Foundation, the nation’s largest sports charity. Town FC is designed to increase participation in our national game by helping clubs to meet the essential costs of starting new teams. Chris Greenfield, the Club’s Football Development Officer, said: ‘The funding from the Football Foundation will enable us as a club to offer and attract Player participation in the upper age groups. The costs of setting up and maintaining new teams are a huge financial cost to the club and without this essential funding from the Football Foundation would make it all the harder for us as a club to consider. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Grow the Game has become one of the Foundation’s most popular schemes. This additional funding provided by the Premier League and The FA is excellent news for grassroots clubs seeking to start new teams and get their volunteer coaches qualified with FA coaching badges. “Congratulations to Faversham Town FC for working with the Kent County FA to secure their £3,000 Grow the Game grant which will increase participation in the region as well as support football development in the area.”

Ray Turner reveals current pre-season squad Faversham manager Ray Turner has revealed his current thoughts on what will be his squad for pre-season. “I am delighted to today confirm that midfielder George Monger has signed from Dartford and Dean Grant has returned from Herne Bay for the forthcoming season. These players will be joining last season’s first team squad, new players and a very talented group

of young players looking to break into that squad and represent the club at under-21 level for the season ahead.” Turner added: “ I can also confirm that I am current tracking 3 players from higher level football, who will add the gloss to an already strong and competitive squad. I may have to be patient with those deals, which are likely to happen later in the pre-season schedule.”

cycle to Kolkata? Launch: The project was given an exciting launch at Faversham Gym Club on Friday 14th March when Khushi The Cow kick-started the challenge by cycling the first mile of our bike ride with MP Hugh Robertson (who was Minister for the 2012 Olympic Games), who officially launched the project. Cycling is the third most popular recreational activity in the UK. An estimated 3.1 million people ride a bicycle each month. You can read all about the Benefits of Cycling over on the NHS web site, and if you’re looking for motivation the Thirty Reasons to Take Up Cycling on bikeradar.com should do the job.

Cycle to Kolkata, began on Friday 14th March and is currently still in progress. The bike ride is over 6,000 miles long! Can we cycle to Kolkata? We have already cycled over 2000 miles, and have raised over £2500 miles. Just remember - every little helps. You may not think you have much to offer, but the odd mile here and there and a little bit of sponsor money will really make a difference! All the information you need to get started can be found on our website www.khushifeet.org.uk/cycle-to-kolkata

Faversham Cricket Club, previously Macknade Cricket Club, was formed in October 1935 as Macknade Sports and Social club, for the workers of Macknade Farm. The club has changed its name a few times in its history, being know at different times as Macknade Sports Club, Macknade Sports & Social Club and Macknade Cricket Club. Until October 2013, the club had always had Macknade as part of its name, however at the AGM the membership approved a change of name to Faversham Cricket Club, reflecting the club’s position as the Town’s Club. The Club is located on the A2 at Macknade, with access via a farm track on the Selling Road, opposite Macknade Fine Foods. Faversham Cricket Club currently runs two adult sides on Saturdays, both playing in the respective Kent League 4th Divisions, a Sunday East Kent League Division 2, side and a Sunday/midweek Friendly XI, in addition to Colts teams in all district age groups and cup sides. The club offers coaching for children as young as 5 years old, in a safe and secure environment. All coaches are ECB qualified, and offer excellent training. The club has over 25 years of experience in developing young cricketers, and is clubmark accredited, showing the club’s commitment to safeguarding children. The Club membership is drawn primarily from the Faversham area, and as a Community Amateur Sports Club, no payments are made to any players, the club is run, as it always has been, by volunteers. Membership is open to all, contact details are on the facing page.
