Faversham Town Council News Sir Philip Neame Friday 19th December sees the unveiling of a memorial stone to Sir Philip Neame, who won a Victoria Cross on that day exactly 100 years ago in one of the early clashes of World War I. Sir Philip, then a Lieutenant, was at Neuve Chapelle in France when he helped fight off a counter-attack by German forces trying to re-take trenches recently captured from them. The British defenders were struggling to hold off the attack partly because they had run out of fuses for their grenades. A trained military engineer, Sir Philip knew how to light grenades using matches and went to the front-line where he threw them into the German positions, singlehandedly holding off the attack for 45 minutes while British wounded were evacuated.
The unveiling ceremony takes place in Market Place at 12 noon when there will be a commemorative service and a march past by a Royal Engineers band. The event is being organised by Faversham Town Council, working with members of the Neame family and Swale Borough Council. The memorial stone has been made as part of a UK wide initiative to honour all British Victoria Cross recipients of the First World War. Sir Philip went on to win an Olympic gold medal for rifle shooting at the 1924 Paris Olympics and is the only person to have been both awarded a Victoria Cross and won an Olympic gold medal.
The Great Charter As many local people know, Faversham has its own medieval Magna Carta: the Great Charter which King John agreed in 1215, which many consider the foundation of personal freedom and human rights in the modern world. Fewer than 20 copies of Magna Carta survive from the Middle Ages. Faversham’s is the only one in Kent and is unique as it is the only one ‘dedicated’ to a particular place. Next year the town is taking part in the national and international celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. Faversham’s magnificent collection of 18 town charters, including its Magna Carta, will be on display in the Alexander Centre, Preston Street, throughout June. The exhibition is being run under the auspices of Faversham Town Council. When the Faversham exhibition closes the town’s Magna Carta will then form the 6

centrepiece of a touring display travelling to Maidstone, Canterbury and Rochester. The touring exhibition is a collaborative effort, with the town council working with Visit Kent, Canterbury, Rochester and Maidstone. The council is also working with local people and organisations to stage other events to help mark the historic occasion. Ideas being worked on for those event include a town centre Magna Carta Weekend in mid-June with entertainment and a street market, a 21st Century Youth Charter produced by local schools, concerts, talks by local and nationally known guest speakers, and a service at St Mary of Charity. Details of the exhibition and programme of events will be announced in the coming months. D TYRES Christmas Lights Christmas in Faversham is enhanced every year by the superb seasonal lights display that brightens the streets of the town centre. Managed by a team of local volunteers, the Christmas lights are the best for miles around and are an important part of the Faversham seasonal experience. Helping to attract locals and visitors in their thousands in the build up to the big day, the lights are held by many to be the best in Kent. As ever, the lights will be officially switched on at the end of November this year that will happen on Saturday 29th November, 5pm, outside the Guildhall, Market Place. The switch-on will be boosted by an evening street market, when there will be entertainments and local traders offering seasonal goodies, including food and drink. It is even rumoured Santa might make an appearance at the do! Unlike many towns, where the local council manages the lights, Faversham’s top-notch Christmas display is entirely run by volunteers, a remarkable achievement by a small group of dedicated local people. Faversham Town Council provides grants to help the team continue their work making the show the marvellous spectacle it has become.
Christmas Markets Faversham’s unrivalled special Christmas street markets will be held this year on Sunday 14th and Sunday 21st December. The markets will feature carols, music and entertainment. Packed with locally produced food, drink and gifts, you can get all your shopping done in one go as well as have a great time. All-in-all a great day for all the family! Please mention

Faversham Town Council News Walking Trails If you over-indulge at the Christmas party, or have one too many mince pies or slices of turkey, you may feel the need to work off some unwanted calories. There’s no better way of doing that than to pull on your walking boots, hit the trail on one of Faversham’s highly-rated walking routes and explore some of the most gorgeous coast and country scenery England has to offer. Eight trails in and around Faversham have been created with support from Faversham Town Council, Kent County Council, local businesses and others. The Faversham Food Trails celebrate the area’s amazing food and drink traditions and modern-day offers, and have become a popular and well-used part of local life. Featured in the Times, the Sunday Times and other national publications, the routes vary from straightforward walks of some five miles

over level ground, to more challenging trails of up to 11 miles up hill and down dale. But, to let you into a secret, even the more arduous of the walks have short cuts for the less serious walker. And, and as you would expect with walks branded as food trails, most of them pass by one or two of the area’s enticing pubs, restaurants and cafés. For the routes and all the information you need on these life-enhancing (and weight reducing!) walks just go to the town’s official website at www.faversham.org/walking. Remember Southcliffe, the 2013 TV thriller which was filmed almost exclusively in and around Faversham? Three of the food trails take you past landmarks seen in the series. If you want to spot some film locations while you enjoy your walk, again go to faversham. org/walking for all the information you need.

Faversham Town Council News Town Action Plan When Faversham Town Council consulted residents for its Faversham 2020: Town Action Plan review a repeatedly voiced priority of local people was to keep the town’s streets looking good. While the town council doesn’t have a legal duty to care for road maintenance, that falls to Kent County Council, councillors thought the issue was important and have responded by setting up a function to help protect and enhance the town’s public realm, as streets and other public areas are sometimes called. A new committee, the Conservation Liaison Group, was formed to oversee that work and was given a budget of £10,000. The group meets regularly with representatives from Kent County Council and Swale Borough Council on the committee alongside town councillors and staff. The committee is currently working on a number of ideas to enhance the local street scene. These include: • improving the look of the residential block bordered by Napleton Road, Tanners Street, West Street and South Road, where residents have pointed out there is an unwelcome profusion of unneeded street signs and posts cluttering roads and pavements

• upgrading the area around the railway station, with better paving and more trees to make it a more attractive entrance to the town and make it more pedestrian friendly • enhancing Market Place by improving street lighting. As well as matching lamp columns there with those in Court Street it is planned to re-position the lighting to make the space better for events and easier for the street market to use. In the future the council is planning to, among other things, support the work of the newly formed Friends of The Westbrook and Stonebridge Pond amenity group, increase the volume of floral decorations that brighten the town centre each summer and continue with its ‘decluttering’ work. The town council has had a lot of support for this work from county councillor Tom Gates, who has helped direct county funding to public realm improvements, KCC officers as well as from Swale councillors and officers.

New Road Tax Laws British car owners are being urged to make sure they are aware of the new road tax laws which took effect from October this year. One of the new rules prohibits sellers from passing on the outstanding period of road tax with the sale of a car. The DVLA has been advising UK residents that paper tax discs, which have been in use since 1921, will become obsolete for the last couple of years, with their total removal to apply from 1 October 2014. From that date, drivers can choose to manage their road tax online, through the Post Office or with Direct Debit payments. Enforcement will be via DVLA and police cameras with number plate recognition technology, which can check automatically whether a vehicle is currently taxed or SORN, rather than checking that paper tax discs are affixed to windscreens. The DVLA believes the new system will not only make it more difficult for drivers to get away with driving untaxed vehicles but also cut down on administration costs to an estimated £10 million annually. The DVLA produced 42.2 million paper tax discs, with a total weight over 72 tonnes - more than a Challenger 2 tank. Car owners must also be vigilant in ensuring that the DVLA is informed of any change of car

ownerships, and any unused tax cannot be transferred with the vehicle. Drivers, instead, will need to claim a refund for the remaining taxation period. Sellers who fail to notify the DVLA that their vehicle has been sold risk a fine of £1,000, in addition to being on the end of any speeding or parking offences incurred by the new owner, resulting in further fines and possible licence penalty points. The DVLA is reminding car owners that it is the seller’s responsibility to return the V5C registration document complete with details of the sale, rather than relying on the new owner to do so, and owners who scrap their vehicles must be in receipt of a Certificate of Destruction, as given by an authorised facility. Until the documents are sent off, drivers are likely to be held liable for any transgressions committed by the car’s new owner. Motoring organisations, however, are concerned that drivers will unwittingly break the law if they do not know or understand the new rules. The DVLA has produced a short film called ‘Goodbye to the tax disc’ to help car owners understand the new scheme. Liam Doogan

Helping those most in need Recently the news has featured many reports about how lonely and isolated older people can be. Numbers are increasing particularly with regard to older men, who have lost their life partner and have to adjust to life alone. Those featured in reports say that no one to talk about shared memories with can be extremely difficult, often late at night is a time lots of lonely people suffer most. The number of men over the age of 50 suffering from severe loneliness in England will increase to more than 1 million in the next 15 years, research based on government statistics has revealed. (taken from the Guardian Newspaper 13th October 2014). Loneliness can have severe health implications, on those who suffer. Socialising can be particularly difficult for those who because of disability or deteriorating health find it difficult if not impossible to go out. This perhaps becomes even more poignant as winter approaches and the evenings get darker. Age UKs Faversham, Sheppey and Sittingbourne are trying to help those most in need. All the centres run a befriending scheme, where volunteers regularly visit an older person for a chat, typically visits last around an hour but can make such a difference to an older person’s quality of life. They look forward to their visits and often great friendships are made.

Invicta Artistic Roller Skating Invicta Artistic Roller Skating club set for yet more success as they prepare to compete for Great Britain in their third European competition of 2014; the prestigious Cup Of Europe in Portugal. Four of the club’s skaters, three of which are British Champions, have been selected to compete for Team GB. Current British Champions Kati Rust and Luke Mackenzie will compete in the Mini Couples dance category. Kati’s older sister, Rosie Rust; who is also the current British Champion, will compete in the Espoir Solo Dance category and Paige Long, who was placed 4th at the British Championships will compete in the Junior Solo Dance category. The competition, which runs from 28th October to 1st November, is one of the largest roller skating competitions in Europe and attracts talented skaters from across the continent. But the Faversham-based club are prepared for the challenge and the competitive squad have been training with world-class roller
skater and choreographer Allesandra Sain, who recently demonstrated her skating skills on the popular ITV show, Britain’s Got Talent. Club coach Keith marsh said “We are thrilled to have four skaters going to the Cup of Europe competition, they have worked very hard and deserve this opportunity. We wish all of our skaters the very best of luck in Portugal.”

Faversham Town 5 - Walton
Five-star Faversham move to Faversham Town moved top of the Ryman South table with a perfect performance in their 5-0 win over Walton & Hersham. The Lilywhites started the scoring on the 16th minute with Renford Tenyue’s looping header, which landed in the net after Josh Stanford’s cross from the right flank. The Swans did offer a threat and could have equalised if home goalkeeper Simon Overland and his defence hadn’t been alert. But, three minutes before the break, Dean Grant added a second for Faversham. The hosts sealed the victory just before the hour mark when Ashley Brown fed Jack Harris, who beat the away defence and found the net. Centre-back Matthew Bourne powered home a fourth, as he headed in a Wayne Wilson corner. Then, towards the end of normal time, Harris leathered in his second and the team’s fifth to seal the Lilywhite’s place at the Ryman South summit in style. After a cagey start to the game, it was the visitors, who had the first real opportunity with nine minutes on the clock. Forward Matt Reece broke through the home team’s defence, only to send his effort narrowly wide of the right-hand post. The Lilywhites hit dBMasters_Community_Mag_July_14.pdf 1
back to take the lead when Tenyue ran onto a cross from Stanford with his header looping over Swans captain and goalkeeper Gary Ross for his second goal of the season. Five minutes later, the hosts could have extended their advantage, as Grant sprung the offside trap to run onto a Harris through ball. Though, the ex-Herne Bay striker was denied by a strong save from the Walton & Hersham stopper. At the other end, Dylan Cascoe reached a Nathan Daly cross, although, he got a poor connection on his strike that dribbled wide. Faversham looked comfortable at the start of the second half and Wilson went close to effectively sealing the win. The home team’s top goal scorer sent his strike well over the crossbar on 47 minutes after good play by Harris and Sam Bewick. Six minutes later, Walton & Hersham again almost pulled a goal back with Chendlik able to force Overland into action. This time, the Lilywhites goalkeeper palmed the effort wide of the right-hand post. Then, on the 58th minute, Harris effectively sealed the host’s place at the top of the Ryman South league table with 29/05/2014 11:05

op of the table a third goal. The Maidstone United man whose loan will expire after Saturday’s match against Hastings United - beat the Swans defence with ease, before he found the bottom corner. “In the end, we got the perfect result,” said home manager Ray Turner after the match. “I don’t think we started particularly well, Walton & Hersham were quite bright and Simon (Overland) had to play really well tonight and do his job. I think all the back four were excellent tonight. I picked out Bourney (Matthew Bourne) as well. That’s as good as I’ve seen him play for the club, so I thought he was fantastic! We were really pushed tonight. We have had injuries, some young lads have had to grow up and they have had to put some shifts in. I’m particularly pleased with (Kingy) Daniel King, he grew into the game. Kieran Oliver has done a lot of work tonight and done a good job. I think that’s the importance of the squad. The boys have done brilliantly to take full advantage of the games that we’ve played to catch-up with Burgess Hill.” Tom Reeves

Faversham CC As the end of the cricket season approaches, thoughts turn to reviewing the season, and planning the next. 2015 is set to be a very special year for Faversham CC as we celebrate 80 years since being founded as Macknade Sports and Social Club. To kick off this very special year we are asking for anyone who has been a member, player, supporter or sponsor of the club, under any of its previous names, or of Faversham Wanderers Cricket Club, to please get in touch with the club committee, as we want to make sure that everyone who has played a part in the success of the club gets to play a part in celebrating this special anniversary! In addition to looking at the past, the club is also keen to look to the future, and as such, we’re looking for additional volunteers to help in some key areas. You can see what volunteering opportunities we have available at www.joininuk.org/club-profiles/ faversham-cricket-club/profile/ or by
contacting a member of the club committee. The two Kent League sides remain competitive, as does the East Kent League Team. In cup competition, Faversham made it to the semi-finials of the Doug Wood 20/20 cup before being eliminated by Upchurch. The colts continue to go from strength to strength, despite the weather wreaking havoc with the schedule. The under-nines winning Swale Kwick Cricket Cup, and sharing the league title with Upchurch. The under-elevens finished mid-table in the swale league, but found success in the three cup completions, winning the shield, and reaching the final and semi-final of the plate and cup respectively. The under-thirteens have also enjoyed some cup success, reaching the semi-finals of the swale plate and winning the bowl. The underfifteens are also developing well, currently sitting mid-table in the league and awaiting the rescheduling of the cup final.

COOKING
www.communityad.co.uk
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Lightly grease a baking tin, and line with non-stick paper, pushing it into the corners. 2. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and sugar using an electric hand whisk until the mixture is pale in colour, light and frothy. 3. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and carefully cut and fold together, using a spatula, until all the cocoa and flour are incorporated into the egg mixture. (Be careful not to beat the air out of the mixture). 4. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread evenly out into the corners. Bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, or until well risen and firm to the touch. 5. Place a large piece of baking paper on the work surface. Dust with icing sugar generously. Carefully turn the cake upside down onto the paper and remove the bottom lining paper. 6. Cut a score mark 2.5cm in along one of the longer edges. Starting with this edge, begin to tightly roll up the sponge using the paper. Roll with the paper inside and sit the roll on top of its outside edge to cool completely.
For the chocolate sponge • 4 large free-range eggs • 100g Caster sugar • 65g Self-raising flour • 40g Cocoa powder • Icing sugar (to dust)
For the chocolate topping • ½ pint double cream • 300g dark chocolate broken into small pieces
For the cream filling • ½ pint double cream, whipped 20

7. While the cake is cooling down, make the topping. Warm the cream in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until it is melted. Cool to room temperature, then put into the fridge to firm up. 8. Uncurl the cold Swiss roll and remove the paper. Spread the whipped cream on top, and re-roll tightly. Cut a quarter of the cake off from the end on the diagonal. Transfer the large piece of cake to a serving plate and angle the cut end in to the middle of the large cake to make a branch. 9. Put the chocolate icing into a piping bag fitted with a nozzle. Pipe long thick lines along the cake, covering the cake completely. Cover each end with icing. 10. Dress in plenty of layers and make sure that you have some warm shoes or boots with nonslip soles. Eat healthily and keep as active as possible. Keep basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping. Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather. Consider fitting a grab rail if you have steps at your front or back door. Ask your family, neighbours or friends if they could call or visit you more often if a period of cold weather stops you getting out and about.

Tyres Now more than at any other time of the year, it’s important to make sure you have enough tread left on and the correct air pressure in your tyres. Dirty, wet roads will give way to slippery, icy roads and your tyres will need to be in tip top condition to keep you safe. If you live in a remote area that suffers from heavy snowfall, you might want to think about getting a set of winter tyres - their deep tread accompanies a special rubber that’s resistant to degradation from icy temperatures.
Oil change Motor oil thickens in colder temperatures and is less efficient as a lubricator. To protect your engine, change your oil for one with a lower viscosity - look for the number preceding the ‘W’ on the bottle: 5W has a lower viscosity, for example, than 10W. Your vehicle’s manufacturer’s handbook should contain more information.
Wax finish Wetter winter air teams up with salty road grit to make a corrosive assailant on your car’s paintwork. Allowing the paint to corrode too much exposes the aluminium underneath, which can also be damaged. Treat your car to a regular waxing over the winter months to repel the corrosive mixture. Consider fitting a set of winter wiper blades to improve your visibility when the weather is bad. Make sure you also use a windscreen washing fluid that is compatible with low temperatures, as otherwise, the washer fluid could freeze solid in its reservoir.
Belt and braces Rubber components such as belts and hoses can become brittle at low temperatures. Have yours checked and change any showing signs of damage.
Anti-freeze Coolant liquid prevents overheating to the engine system. Water alone used as coolant is susceptible to freezing once the mercury drops, so make sure you avoid this and the attendant engine damage by using a coolant mixture that is one part water to one part anti-freeze.
