Faversham Gospel Mission
Faversham Umbrella is a community support charity offering support for adults who are suffering from varying degrees of mental health trauma. We promote physical and mental wellbeing and support people to enable them to work towards recovery in a safe and stimulating environment. Service users are encouraged to become involved in the running of the service, and have an active voice in the organisation. Our aim is that service users can take control of their own health and well-being by participating in the various activities we offer promoting the six ways to wellbeing. This includes service users making full use of Arts and Crafts Projects, Fun with Music, Healthy Eating Workshops, educational trips we arrange or accessing the appropriate support agencies we work with collaboratively to support their individual needs.

Cherries galore at Brogdale The Cherry Fair at Brogdale, Faversham is to take place on 19 July to celebrate the hundreds of varieties being preserved in the National Fruit Collection Visitors will find a display of different named varieties with lots on offer to taste and buy on the day. The opportunity to experience such a vast expanse of cherries only takes place once a year as there are only two trees of each of these unique and rare delights. The date therefore is set at what is anticipated to be the height of the crop.

Samaritans are here to support you in any way we can Over 60 years ago, if you dialled MAN 9000 a Samaritans volunteer would answer and talk over your problems with you, without prejudice and in confidence. Nowadays you get the exactly the same committed service but from 201 branches throughout the UK and ROI. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As at the church used by Samaritans all those years ago, you can still visit us but there are far more than that original handful of volunteers. There are now over 20,000 trained people to help you talk through your feelings face to face, helping you through whatever is troubling you.
If you prefer to type rather than talk you can email us. Sharing problems online is preferred by many people who find it difficult to talk about the issues that confront them. Sometimes writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you better understand them. Whichever way you choose to contact us, if something’s troubling you then get in touch. We do not give advice and are not judgemental. We will give you the time you need to explore your feelings.

Faversham Townswomen’s Guild For some years prior to 1928 women had been fighting for the right to vote. The Suffragists rather than Suffragettes, believed in reasoned argument and worked within the law, to bring about change. It was from these ladies that the idea of Townswomen’s Guilds was born. In 1929 the first Guild was formed. Within two years 113 Guilds had been formed and 13 Federation had been formed to enable Guilds to know and help each other. During the war years the Ministry of Labour asked the Guild to encourage married women ineligible for National Service to work part time in shops, offices and factories to release men and women for munitions and services. Many younger members were conscripted. The Guild where possible continued meeting during the war. In 1950 resolutions were passed allowing Townswomen to campaign on national affairs. Over the years the years Townswomen have been responsible for funding the clearing of Reid refugee camp in Austria and for funding the building of flats for refugees. All this by the end of 1960s and also by then there were 2,700 Guilds spread across the country. Today the Guilds original aims have really been completed as education for women is on a very equal footing to men. However the guild still lobs Parliament on matters which it feels are important to women and society. An example of this was trying to get Parliament to lift the rule on declaring a criminal record for

women who were trying to reform their lives from prostitution so they could more easily find gainful employment. Although we may not need to be promoting women’s education we are still promoting women’s rights and opportunities. Faversham Townswomen’s Guild was founded in 1939 and is still going strong today with almost 50 members. In the past the Guild has paid a very active role in Faversham especially during the war years, using our ladies skills in knitting to make socks etc, for solders and also being asked by the Mayor to organise dances for service men at the weekend. We of course supported all the ladies in Faversham in helping to do as much for the war effort as possible. Today, the Guild enjoys its monthly meeting with a variety of guests speakers who keep us well informed. These include history, gardening, variety theatre and old time musical hall and so on. We also enjoy coach trips, and wonderful group lunches to celebrate anything we can think off. We like to keep a gentle eye on each other and have lots of fun.

Rosie Rust, took 3rd place in the Cadet Solo Dance category. However, there is little time to celebrate as these amazing results now mean the skaters must prepare to skate at international level.
Invicta Artistic Roller Skating Club is celebrating after an outstanding performance at the recent British Championships from which the Faversham-based club came away with 3 British Champions, and qualifications to skate for Team GB at the forthcoming European and World Championships.
Kati Rust, Luke Mackenzie and Rosie Rust have all earned places to skate for Team GB at the Cup Of Europe, one of Europe’s largest roller skating competitions which will be held in Dijon France in July. Paige Long has qualified not only for the European Championships in Italy but also the ultimate competition; the World Championships to be held in Cali, Colombia in September.
For this latest triumph, Invicta took 17 skaters to compete at the British Championships across a range of categories from Tots (under 9 years) to Masters (over 40 years). Kati Rust and Luke Mackenzie were crowned British Champions in the Espoir (up to 13 years) category whilst Paige Long became British Junior Ladies Solo Dance Champion (up to 19 years). Kati also came 2nd in the Mini Solo Dance category whilst her older sister,

triumph for the Faversham-based club which continues to enjoy international success after a string of impressive results last year in competitions in France, Portugal and Holland. Invicta has been helped to victory by worldclass roller skater and choreographer Alessandra Sain, who has brought a new coaching element to the club with her international experience and expertise. Head Coach Keith Marsh said “We are indebted to Alessandra for all of her hard work. We been working together for just over 18 months and her impact has been huge; it is thanks to her that we are now going to compete at the World Championships.” All of the skaters selected to compete for Team GB started as beginners at Invicta; one of the largest artistic roller skating clubs in the South East, and have progressed from learning basic skills to skating at an international level. DEBRA DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a painful genetic skin blistering condition which, in the worst cases, can be fatal. Blisters, open wounds and sores form as a result of the slightest touch. In its least severe form, blistering is confined to the hands and feet but can still cause lifelong pain and disability. Blisters often have to be lanced and dressed every day – a painful procedure which can take several hours. In more severe cases, the whole body is affected, including inner body linings, such as the mouth and throat and wounds heal very slowly, giving rise to scarring. Excessive blistering creates scar tissue which can cause fingers and toes to fuse together and can lead to an aggressive form of skin cancer. Scar tissue can also cause the oesophagus to narrow, making eating difficult. Children with EB are often described as having skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wings. DEBRA focuses its work in two areas; the charity provides care and support to individuals and families living with EB and funds pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB.
DEBRA has over 100 charity shops around the country, which sell affordable, good quality items that have been donated by supporters. You can find everything from clothing, bric-abrac, books, toys, games and DVDs to larger furniture and electrical items. They are run by a legion of willing volunteers and hard-working shop staff. Your nearest DEBRA charity shop can be found at 46 Court Street, Faversham, Kent ME13 7AL, so pop along and grab yourself a bargain! The DEBRA charity shops provide invaluable awareness of this rare and debilitating condition on the high street, but more importantly the steady income stream necessary to enable DEBRA to continue its focus of providing both care and research.

The Kent Disability League The Kent Disability League began in the 2005/2006 season to create opportunities for footballers with varying impairments and levels of ability to compete in the same environment, providing regular competitive and fun football playing opportunities for children and adults. Prior to this there were only a handful of disability teams across the county who played friendly games of in regional competitions.
The KD League soon established itself and grew at a phenomenal rate, partly in response to the demand for more localised competition. Seven years on, there are now over 50 small sided teams regularly taking part in the Kent DL with over 300 adult and almost 200 junior, male and female, players taking part, making it the largest county disability league in the country. The clubs which compete in the Kent DL play pan-disability football, where teams consist of players with varied physical disabilities, which can include cerebral palsy, visual Impairments, deaf, Down’s syndrome and amputees, alongside players with various learning disabilities. All the divisions encourage mixed participation, male and female, where 18

the Kent DL became the first to run mixed adult disability football. Clubs competing include Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Canterbury City, Bromley Green Valiants, Sheppey United, Maidstone United, Folkestone United, Thanet Galaxy, Deal All Stars, Milton & Fulston Spiders, Swanscombe Tigers, RMB United, Anchorian Equals and BCD. The Kent DL was originally run and administered by the Kent FA; however, all Kent DL operations are now the responsibility of the new league committee (volunteers), which include
representatives from various clubs within the Kent DL. Towards the end of the 2014-2015 season the Kent Disability League was selected as the South East Region FA & McDonalds Charter Standard League of The Year 2015. Unlike other county football leagues and divisions, where clubs compete in home and away fixtures, due to the distances between the Kent DL clubs, fixtures are played as monthly tournaments throughout the football season at one venue for adult teams and another venue for juniors. Fixtures are played in a round-robin short match format, with varied divisions from under 11s through to under 13s, under 16s and up to adults. Magazine when responding to advertisements

A Although the Kent DL is affiliated to the Kent County FA, it is now the responsibility of the committee to run disability league football throughout Kent, ensuring the league has long term sustainability, which also requires the league to become self-funded.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making donations for equipment to the KD League, please contact fundraiser David Ramzan via email fundraising@kentdl.co.uk or call 07860 713619.
To continue with these ongoing disability football competitions the Kent DL is in need of funding and support to assist in ensuring the league can continue to offer football tournaments, matches and activities for competing clubs and players, from supplying equipment, specialist footballs, training kit and facilities hire, to sponsorship of the Kent DL.

Faversham Rugby U
Founded in 1992, the FRUFC remains one of the youngest in the RFU and is by far the most sociable club in the area. The Faversham team, under the name of The Castaways (the name which gives the club its desert island logo) was originally formed for an annual charity match against Sittingbourne, Played on Boxing Day each year since 1989, the charity match continues to be an important event for both clubs and is now played in memory of former Sittingbourne and Faversham player, Steve Ardley. This year’s Boxing Day Charity Match will be played at Sittingbourne Rugby Club Gore Court on 26th December with an 11am kickoff. In 1994 the club moved from its first home, at the Swan & Harlequin pub, to its current location on Faversham Recreation Ground. The old park keeper’s lodge was refurbished by the players and committee, creating the FRUFC Clubhouse and the home of The Castaways. 20

Dave Suter, Founding Member and Treasurer “When we first set up the club, not many people expected us to be around for very long; but here we are at the start of our 23rd season and still going strong. We pride ourselves on not only being a competitive team, but on also being one of the most welcoming and sociable clubs in the area.” Combining competitive rugby with a strong social side, Faversham RUFC is the perfect place for anyone who enjoys the sport. Martyn Potts Club Chairman says “I’ve been involved with the club since 2001 and I have to say, I have never come across another club that welcomes new players and supporters with such enthusiasm.” The 1st XV play in Kent Division 2 which provides a full schedule of league and cup matches across the county. Union Football Club finished strongly last term only losing once in the second half of the season. Alongside this, the 2nd XV play in a range of friendly matches throughout the season, which enables new players to come and challenge for a first team place, as well as allowing those who wish to play less often an opportunity to still play the occasional game. The Ladies’ team is hoping to play their first games very soon. They are nearly ready to take the next step and commit to a fixture. This will be a great step forward for the club and is creating a lot of excitement; both at training and around the club as a whole.

President Trevor Cox “The club and the teams are really going places and I believe that the FRUFC has a great future. The club is moving forward to become a strong and competitive force in Kent Rugby, and we’re all looking forward to stepping up to the challenges ahead.” Preseason training kicks off on the 14th July at Faversham Recreation Ground from 7pm, for both the Ladies’ and Men’s teams. Players for all squads must be aged 17 and over. New players of all abilities are always welcome. Training will move to the 3G pitch at the Abby School from mid-August as the season approaches.

The Faversham Food Festival 18 - 20 September There are ambitious plans for Faversham, to establish an annual Food Festival to rival Ludlow, Britain’s leading real food and drink event. Elizabeth Carter, editor of The Good Food Guide identified “the East Kent Triangle”, back in 2009, as an area of food excellence. Faversham is the gateway to the triangle delineated by Canterbury and Whitstable and encompassing fine restaurants, gastro pubs and cafes; farmers’ markets and food emporia like Macknade in Faversham and the Goods Shed in Canterbury; and outstanding local producers of bread, cakes, meat, cheese, fish, fruit and vegetables and to accompany the fine food, local beer, wines, cider and spirts. Real food come naturally to Faversham. The Faversham Food Festival will bring all these producers together in the heart of Faversham to celebrate our heritage of fine locally produced food and drink, an opportunity to share what we have with others - whether from East Kent, London or further afield. This is a local Festival but one to which we welcome those who appreciate our food and beverage and who want to share our festival with us. The Faversham Food Festival runs over three days from Friday 18th September to Sunday 20th and it will take place in the heart of the town with local businesses - pubs, cafes food retailers and producers taking part along with the stall holders. There will be talks and demonstrations, tastings and competitions. We are launching a Sausage Trail where participants will be able to sample new sausages from local

butchers, each designed to win the “people’s choice” - all those taking part, adults and children, will have one vote for the ”Faversham Food Festival Sausage of the Year.” As in Ludlow adults and children will have equal votes to decide the winner and doubtless the range of Faversham’s food offer will be extended as new varieties of local sausage become established. This is a community festival, there will be events in the Physic Garden, on some of the allotments and St Mary’s are holding their Harvest Festival on Sunday 20th. We are keen that as many local groups as wish participate in the Festival. On the Friday fresh fish will be landed again on the Creekside and there will be a Friday Night Fish Fry event on the green beside the Albion pub on Front Brents, with fresh fish, fishcakes, fried and barbecued fish, demonstrations of filleting and tastings. On Saturday there will be the traditional Saturday market, tastings, demonstrations and on the Sunday a special festival market in the market place.

Belmont House Events Shakespeare’s The Two Gentle of Verona Friday 10th July 2015
Hay Fever Saturday 1st August 2015 performance starts at 3.00pm
Widely considered to be Shakespeare’s first play, ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’ is a comedy about the adventures of two best friends, Valentine and Proteus. When Proteus falls in love with his best friend’s girlfriend, the guys find themselves torn between the bonds of male friendship and romance.
The Changeling Theatre Group present ‘Hay Fever’ by Noel Coward. The play is set in the hall of the Bliss family home. The eccentric BlissesJudith, a recently retired stage actress, David, a self-absorbed novelist, and their two equally unconventional children live in a world where reality slides easily into fiction.
This is a great opportunity for friends and family to sit back and enjoy each other’s company whilst indulging in a glass of chilled Summer wine and watching a traditional evening of entertainment. Access the grounds from 6.30pm, performance starts at 7.30pm.
Upon entering this world, the unfortunate weekend guests-a proper diplomat, a shy flapper, an athletic boxer, and a fashionable sophisticate-are repeatedly thrown into melodramatic scenes wherein their hosts profess emotions and react to situations that do not really exist. The resulting comedic chaos ends only when the tortured visitors tip-toe out the door.
£19.50 adults, £8.00 for children (under 16). Family Ticket (two adults and two children under 16): £50.

Protect your eyes A healthy lifestyle can protect your eyes against the effects of ageing If you are aged 60 or over, the good news is that you’re entitled to a free eye test every year, courtesy of the NHS. This is because your eyesight naturally deteriorates as you get older, and conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts become increasingly common. Frequent eye tests are needed to check your vision and eye health for any indications of problems. In the meantime, there are several measures you can take to keep your eyes naturally healthy for as long as possible: Incorporating a variety of fruit and vegetables into your diet will ensure that you receive a range of vitamins and minerals which are crucial for maintaining good eye health. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses whenever you’re outdoors, not just in the summer, will protect your eyes from any harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. If you’re a smoker, you’re at a significantly increased risk of developing conditions such
30
Please mention
as cataracts and macular degeneration. Stopping smoking can reduce the likelihood of developing these eye conditions. Make sure your home is well lit, especially at the top and bottom of the stairs, and use a lamp for reading or close work. Your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 to see as well as they did when you were 20! Take regular exercise – this maintains blood and oxygen circulation which is not only good for your overall health, but beneficial for your eyes as well. Have plenty of rest and good quality sleep – this is the time when your eyes are cleared of irritants like dust and smoke that may have accumulated over the day. If you experience any unusual symptoms, including localised eye pain, excessive headaches, blurry vision or a total or partial loss of vision, you should seek help from your optician or a medical professional immediately. Depending on the problem, and its stage of development, effective treatment may be able to be administered to reverse your symptoms.
