What’s to become of our lift? The Leas Lift has been a feature of Folkestone’s coastal landscape since Queen Victoria was on the throne and, for most of us it’s always been there, we couldn’t imagine the town without it and we very much take for granted that it will always be there when we need it. It occupies a very unique place in the industrial heritage, not just of the town, but of the whole nation and is a listed structure but, as was discovered when the carriages were removed for repair back in October, being special brings its own set of problems. The fact that the lift is running at all is the result of a special relationship between the Radnor Estate, who own and maintain the lift, and the Folkestone Leas Lift Community Interest Company, which operates the lift on a not-for-profit basis on behalf of the people of Folkestone. Individually and collectively they have to steer a course between the sometimes conflicting requirements of Historic England (the new name for English Heritage), who want to preserve the lift in its historic glory, and the Health and Safety Executive, who want to modernize it to bring it into line with European Safety Regulations. It’s a bit like the old adage about a swan – all calm and serene on the surface but underwater it’s paddling frantically. In the lift’s case it just calmly keeps winding its way up and down the cliff whilst in the background the directors are running around in ever decreasing circles trying to meet the regulations, find the day to day running costs and bid for funding from the National Lottery to pay for the long-term conservation of the installation. So the long closure whilst waiting to get new metal “tyres” from South Africa has not presented any additional challenges in terms of meeting the regulations or trying to get a grant from the lottery
but it has threatened the ability of the Community Interest Company doing all of this work to stay in business. What was initially predicted to be a twomonth closure has now turned into at least nine months and there are very few companies that can survive that long without any form of income. Even though most of its staff work as volunteers – there are still utility bills that have to be paid even though the lift is closed for business! The lift is an ancient structure that has been around for 130 years now and, just like people in their senior years, it needs a lot of extra care and attention, especially because of its situation down on the seafront bearing the brunt of every Atlantic storm. You can’t just lock the doors and walk away because that harsh environment is attacking it every day – rotting every bit of unpainted wood, rusting every bit of exposed metal and reducing every brick to dust with abrasive, wind-blown sand. So the Community Interest Company has been forced to directly seek financial support from the public for the first time since it took over the running of the lift in 2010. That support is needed to pay for the day to day utility bills and allow for part-time caretaking staff to keep the rest of the lift in good condition until the carriages return in the middle of summer. Without that support, the company will fold and it is very unlikely that the lift will ever re-open again. The company have set up a crowd-funding website (https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/Leas-Lift) and will be out on the streets with collecting tins in April. Anyone wishing to help in the meantime can donate money directly to their bank via the internet: Sort: 40-21-15 account: 01626183.

About Folkestone
the origin of the name “folkestone” has invited much discussion over the years, and there is a suggestion that it comes from folca’s stone, a rock marking the meeting place of local people, although who folca was and where his stone was remain mysteries. even the spelling of the name was not resolved until a 19th century lord of the manor insisted on “folkestone” being spelt as it is now. Modern Folkestone is a product of the Victorian age. The town covers some 3,525 acres and now has a growing population of around 43,000. The coming of the railway in 1843, the development of the harbour and the Earl of Radnor’s decision to create a superior resort in the middle years of that century were the factors that made the town of today, with fine buildings, attractive parks and gardens and a seafront varied in character. Modern industrial and commercial developments have broadened its economic base and the town now has within its bounds the entrance to the Channel Tunnel, a main rail/road link to the continent. The town has been further enhanced with the building of Bouverie Place Shopping Centre and the stop at Folkestone for the high-speed rail link which means a journey to London of just 54 minutes.
Civic Regalia Chain of Office – The Town Mayor’s Chain of Office was presented in 1867. The Chain consists of fifty-two links with hand-pierced initials and the date of each Mayor from 1852 onwards for 51 years. Links are 18ct gold, and set within the chain is the Borough Seal carved on onyx (black background with white relief ) set with four rose diamonds.
The Jewel presented by the Earl of Radnor is enamelled with circular Borough Seal, St Eanswythe and the Earl of Radnor’s Coat of Arms, inscribed on the reverse Badge of Office – The Town Mayor’s Badge of Office was presented by RAF Hawkinge in 1961. The Badge is of 9ct gold, enamelled with the Town’s Armorial bearings set below a silver RAF crest. The Town Mayor’s Badge of Office was presented on a blue silk collarette in a blue jewel case. Mace – The Great Mace is carried by the Town Sergeant on ceremonial and certain civic occasions and precedes the Mayor in procession. It is the Mayor’s symbol of authority. The present Mace was made in 1885. The head of the Mace is surmounted by the Royal Crown with the Royal Coat of Arms in relief on top. The Borough Seal, the Arms of the Cinque Ports and St Eanswythe in relief on sides of head, all chased and pierced. The head is joined to the staff by dolphins and tridents, staff chased and engraved with Tudor roses, thistles and cherubs and two brass holders.

Help Maintain Folkestone Cemetery
it was a cold wintry day, drizzly rain in the air, and a small group gathered in a semi circle in front of the machine Gun Corp. memorial. we were in the old folkestone cemetery (Cheriton road) and it was armistice day, 11th November 2015.
I was there as Chairman of Shepway and with a poppy wreath in my hand I joined the small damp group of people - veterans, families and Folkestones Mayor as we waited for the service to start. After the service and as we walked to the car I looked back over my shoulder at this Victorian cemetery and made a mental note to come back for a look around. A week later my partner Richard and I parked up and took a walk round this lovely old cemetery. I noticed that there were many commonwealth war grave headstones and I started to look closer at the other headstones and handsome memorials. As we walked round it was clear that this lovely Victorian cemetery contains so much of Folkestones civic, military and social history, albeit many headstones and memorials are so very overgrown, and I decided I wanted to do something about this. With the help of a local historian Peter Anderson we started to identify significant headstones and memorials in this old cemetery. Victorian cemeteries have been neglected across the country and that is true here too with many graves no longer being tended by families as they have moved out of the area or have died off. After searching online to find out what happens in other areas - the solution appears to be that ‘Friends’ groups are formed who work with the
10 FTCM01 Magazine A5.indd 10-11
local authority to look after the cemeteries - so with that thought in mind I have been working on this idea (and the website). Just before Christmas I visited the cemetery with Shepways Burial officer so that we could discuss some of the issues (rabbits undermining headstones, etc.) and my historian friend Peter Anderson and I have started to identify significant graves (x3 VC’s, CWG’s, children who were killed in the Tontine St. air raid, etc.). To get started on the work clearing brambles and unwanted shrubs Shepways Crime Prevention officer has already held three Green Gym sessions (working outdoors and keeping fit) and they have made a great impression on areas in the cemetery, clearing weeds and huge self seeded buddleia. But there is lots more to do, lots and lots - so here is the call to action....if you are interested in finding out more about Folkestones history, if you want to help care for this lovely place, if you want to work outdoors doing something very useful and keeping fit too then please do get in touch and I can tell you how you can get involved.

Our philosophy, as a nursery, is that children need to feel safe within an environment that encourages them to use and build upon skills they already have. We follow the revised EYFS curriculum (2012) and base our work with the children around the nursery’s five principles, which are: 1. Promoting high quality practice, train and gain 2. See the world through a child’s eyes 3. Promote equality and inclusiveness 4. Observe, plan, execute, evaluate 5. Safeguarding responsibily We also believe that ‘play’ has enormous value and as such, this is our logo.

The Folkestone Trawler race & fun day makes its third spectacular return on Saturday & Sunday August 6 & 7. Cath Mison along with Terry Noakes (Folkestone Trawlers) and Andy Pope (National Coast Watch) have joined together again to host the towns historic event. The Trawlers will battle it out to see who’s the fastest and the best dressed out on the high seas whilst on the quayside market stalls, fairground rides, food outlets and live music will keep all the spectating crews entertained. With demonstrations from the Splash pals Newfoundland rescue dogs and visiting RNLI rescue teams this is one weekend not to miss in Folkestone’s calendar of events. Local National Coast Watch team – “our eyes along the coast” who received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service are always a welcome sight down on the Stade with their entertaining charity raisers of tombola’s, human fruit machine and guess how many shells are in that tank you could not only be a lucky winner but you may be interested in volunteering with these guys. For creative culinary skills look no further than the “Mariners Annual Fish Pie Competition” with no twists in its 5th year you could be in with the chance of netting yourself £100. This weekend is a free event for the community - not only for the town to have some fun but to increase footfall & tourists along the quay, to encourage more people to support their local fishermen and buy fresh fish whilst enabling us to highlight the magnitude of our fishing heritage and the importance of keeping it – more of which you can see displayed at the Fishing heritage Museum at the Old Booking hall Folkestone Harbour open 10.30 16.00hrs daily.
For all enquiries & information please contact Cath Mison 07769684681 or email cathmison@gmail.com or on the Trawler Race Facebook page.

Finding Aefre if you didn’t already know, aefre, meaning ‘forever’ in old english, is the name of our anglo saxon skeleton, excavated from the dover Hill burial site in 1906/7 and housed in the museum ever since. Many of you will be familiar with the skeleton having visited as children or now with your own children and grandchildren. She has long been an object of fascination for visitors and she will take centre stage in the new museum. We know the skeleton is that of an early Saxon woman, aged about 30-40, however, there is much we do not know about our star exhibit and we have now embarked upon an ambitious project to find out more about our elusive ancient lady by performing a series of scientific tests. The skull is currently with the Natural History Museum for DNA testing. This will enable us to find out whether she is more closely related to the ancient Britons or Anglo Saxons, suffered with any hereditary diseases, if any dietary adaptations
were present, and even hair, eye and skin colour (if we are lucky). In February we took out a second molar to send to the British Geological Survey for strontium

and oxygen testing. Fortunately, it took a lot less time than the hour it took the BGS to remove the teeth of Richard III. We also took fragments of rib for carbon and nitrogen testing. The test on the tooth will tell us if she grew up locally or was a migrant. The test on the rib will indicate whether she subsisted on a marine or terrestrial based diet: surprisingly it’s not a given that she ate fish even though they were coastal dwellers. A further piece of rib (about 0.5g) will go to Chronos in Belfast for carbon dating. We know that she was an early Saxon due to her grave goods but the time frame for her is still quite wide (410660 AD). This will enable is us to pinpoint more accurately in which period she was living. We will get the tooth back with a tiny piece of enamel removed (so her near perfect set of teeth
will remain so - no sugar in her diet!) and will lose a small fragment of rib, about 1.5g, as this needs to be powdered for the testing. For more information on the testing techniques you can visit the following sites: • www.bgs.ac.uk/research/home.html • www.chrono.qub.ac.uk • www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/departmentsand-staff/earth-sciences/vertebrate-andanthropology-palaeobiology.html

Behind the scenes
at Folkestone Museum
work is now well underway to further develop and implement the plans for a new museum in folkestone town Hall. the renovation works, which will transform the space, are due to start in spring. you can view the current plans on the folkestone’s Heart page of the ftC website: http://www.folkestonetc. kentparishes.gov.uk Members of staff Sally Hough and Kay Whitehead have continued their work behind the scenes on a number of exciting projects. The documentation of the collection continues in collaboration with Folkestone Camera Club and Kent County Council. Our ambitious photography programme has brought to light further fascinating objects from the collection, which will form the permanent exhibitions in the new museum. We are also embarking on an exciting project to find out more about one of our star objects, the Anglo Saxon skeleton, known as Aefre, an Anglo Saxon name meaning ‘forever’. The Anglo Saxon skeleton will undergo some conservation work and analysis that includes DNA testing. More information will follow as we go through this exciting process, see Folkestone Museum’s Facebook page for future updates. Our team of volunteers, who support the museum with a number of activities, is expanding. We have recently recruited some new faces to the team who will be supporting research, interpretation and collections management. We are currently updating our collections management system in preparation for publishing a searchable database of the key items in the collection. If you would like more information about becoming a volunteer there are opportunities in a range of areas, which include greeting visitors, helping with events and promotions and conducting research into the collections. If you would like to volunteer for Folkestone Museum please contact: kay. whitehead@folkestone-tc.gov.uk There are other ways in which you can help and be involved in upcoming fundraising events. More adult and family workshops to come in 2016 In partnership with Jo Letchford we ran a mosaic workshop inspired by Roman mosaics. Participants designed and created their own mosaic coaster.
Kent Collects Are you a collector based in Kent? Folkestone Museum is teaming up with local artist Karen Pamplin Browne to give Kent based collectors the opportunity to showcase their own private collections. The project would involve allowing Karen to photograph your collection and an exhibition of selected photographs will be held at the new Folkestone museum in 2017. There would also be the opportunity for collectors to display their collections in a dedicated space within the museum alongside the Folkestone collections in a real museum setting. All participants have the right to remain anonymous should they so wish. To kick-start the project, a talk about collecting with a show and tell will be held at the Town Hall in 2016 (date TBC).
If you have a collection you would like to feature in ‘Kent Collects’ please contact Karen Pamplin Browne directly: karen@pamplinbrowne.co.uk. For more information on Karen’s past projects go to: www.karen.pamplinbrowne.co.uk Folkestone Town Council

Armed Forces Day 2016 This year Folkestone’s Armed Forces Day will take place on Saturday 25th June 2016, 11.00am - 4.30pm at Radnor Park instead of the usual venue of The Leas. Each year this event has grown with success and we expect over 5000 visitors this year. It will be our 8th year and we are organising our biggest event yet which will see a comprehensive and varied entertainment programme with some of our usual performers and guests but also some new and diverse acts. The programme of activities and entertainment for the day is yet to be finalised but Folkestone Town Council can confirm that we have again booked the Tigers PWRR Freefall Parachute Display Team who will descend on to Radnor Park, many display stands including military benevolent organisations and hospitality stands and also 3 static aircraft displays with a new, interesting, educational and interactive display of a WWI trench system. The order for the day promises to provide a wellreceived event for one and all with the Armed Forces Day message and recognition of Service Personnel, Veterans and Cadets past, present and future the main focus. The MOD fully supports and has contributed to the costs to deliver this event. In addition to the entertainment programme on the stage there are also Cadet bands, field crafts, Gurkha kukri knife demonstrations and military bands performing in a roped arena, there will also be a small children’s funfair.
