It gives me great pleasure to welcome all readers to our first Magazine produced by Community Ad. When we were initially approached by the company we were concerned about losing control over the content and style which we have all worked so hard to make a success. We were reassured that Galleywood Grapevine would still be a “community magazine” with Galleywood Parish Council retaining full editorial control over news and articles, coupled with advertisements secured by Community Ad. I am pleased to say that this balance has been accomplished and we are delighted with the results, and hope you will be too. In this Spring edition we are featuring the Annual Report and Overview of Galleywood Parish Council, which will be covered at the 27th Annual Parish Open Forum under the theme of “Our Village” at the Keene Hall on Thursday 10 April 2014, commencing at 7pm. You will see that this year we have the presentation of Galleywood Parish Council Awards, announcement of winners for the “Road Safety Poster” and Galleywood Poem and Limerick competitions. We also have an interesting line-up of guest speakers, and there will be the opportunity to put questions to Councillors. Free refreshments will be available. Looking through the news and articles recorded here, really does give a sense of the wonderful community spirit we have in Galleywood, surrounded by the beautiful Essex countryside, I am certainly proud to call Galleywood “Our Village”. Galleywood Grapevine
If you thought nothing much happens on a Monday, then you’d be wrong! As from March, you are invited to come out and help build up an exciting modern choir, The Sound Collective Chorus. There couldn’t be a better time to start singing on Monday nights, from 8.15-9.45pm in the Galleywood Heritage Centre. Everyone is welcome, and with this fresh start it’s a great time to get on board and be all new together from week one! With hugely popular groups already in Maldon, Danbury and Burnham there is much excitement about this highly renowned choir coming to a new area. You don’t need to have any previous experience of singing and there are no auditions or sheet music. The choir consists of men and women of all ages, singing modern songs taught in a fresh modern way. Existing members reference “the buzz” and the “opportunities” of being part of this truly personal, professional, inclusive, fun, fresh and humorous choir. If public singing isn’t for you then weekly Monday evening rehearsals could be a fun night out, but others can look forward to the next Sound Collective event, and your chance to sing at a Masquerade Ball concert in July with the other 200 choir members. Known for their impressive events, past
Galleywood Grapevine
Sound Collective Chorus concerts have ranged from a vintage themed picnic in the park concert at Ingatestone Hall with a 50 stall vintage marketplace, Morris men and the choir dressed in period style to a moving collaboration with a children’s sign language choir in a glamorous “Big Top” Winter show, where the choir performed under a roof of
stars to an exclusive audience of nearly 1000. One choir member said “TSC has given me these new opportunities - being in a choir wasn’t even on my “things to do before I lose my marbles” list, but what a thrill!” Exciting events aside, the choir is shaped slowly week by week at fun rehearsals, and it’s not only singing that is important to those who take part.

The Antipodeans’ Connection
Celebrating Education in Galleywood
The Antipodeans’ connection continues: Mick Bright, who shared his memoirs with us in our last edition, turns out to be an old school friend of Jill Bellamy – or Jill Chaplin, as she was all those years ago; they have been sharing memories, and are now sharing them with us – an abridged version, of course: “Hello Michael – yes, I remember…having to get water from the spring in Rignalls Lane with old milk churns; I still don’t like pulling the plug on nice hot washing-up water, it was such a job then to boil it up on the open fire. The last I remember of your mum was when my eldest son Royston passed his 11+, she let him leave his bike at the side of your house to catch the bus to Grammar School. The old farmhouse you mention was Bearmans Farm, where my grandparents lived. After they died, my brothers found a secret cupboard there, containing some silver pots and a 5 shilling coin. When it was your birthday, I didn’t have anything to
Education Sunday 16 February 2014 St Michael’s Church, Galleywood
give you, my mum said “give him that old coin you found” Do you remember? Have you still got it?” “I’m so pleased to hear from you because your mum, Lydia, was so kind to me, joining me into your family. I was always lonely, so it was wonderful to come up to Cannon Leys…remember the old water tank turned into a boat? It nearly sank with all of us in it on the pond behind the yard. When my mum worked in the dairy at Bearmans Farm she used to give me a mug so I could drink milk straight out of the cooler pan. And I remember the old house, but didn’t go in it – told it was dangerous. Pity I don’t remember the 5 shilling piece. I probably put it in my PO savings account. Unfortunately all my really old photos have gone with my travels, but here’s a recent one of me with Cathy (my ‘new’ girlfriend of 15 years) in a café near the beach on an island near here.”
At a time when much of Galleywood was taking a well-earned break from education for half term, St Michael’s Church was celebrating learning and our local schools. The service started with Phil Preston discovering what makes a school. Phil considered the strategic planning and bricks, encouraging the congregation to get building, before members of the youth put him straight. “You simply don’t get it do you Phil – a school is about people, with adults and children at the centre”. Rev Andy Griffiths and Rachel (a year 9 student), considered life long learning through a series of Learning Objectives where questioning and answering in order to know God better become part of our normal environment. Rachel set a homework challenge; to do one thing this week to open you up for learning something and to help one other person to do the same. More on how you can do this later in the article. It was also an opportunity to hear from members of the schools. Jane Cregan-Bird,
Chair of Governors of St Michael’s Junior School and Debbie Richardson spoke about the challenges ahead with the introduction of a new curriculum in September. Head Teacher Sarah Manning and Deputy Head Teacher Sue Read from Galleywood Infants School gave us a glimpse into the varied and exciting activities taking place at the school. Despite the weather the children have enjoyed making use of the outside space for learning. Finally Georgina Pryke, Head of Thriftwood School, spoke about the challenges ahead with the new building giving students at Thriftwood further opportunities to study post 16. With events running at the Church this Spring; “Ask Andy” on four Sunday evenings after Easter where Andy will answer any question on the Christian faith that maybe on your mind and a ‘Pilgrim’ course discovering more about God, education for all ages really will be part of Galleywood in 2014.

Galleywood Library More than just a book ! Galleywood Library is pleased to announce that it successfully reopened on 21 November 2013 adding two new self-service machines to its facilities, bringing the library fully up to date. They are quick and easy to use especially when borrowing or returning items, plus you can check your account and make any payments. This means that there should be fewer queues at our new ‘hello’ desk, however all of our staff will still be on hand to help you and assist with any queries. We are a friendly team who enjoy meeting our customers, whether you are a regular or visiting for the first time. We still offer all of the same services as before our refurbishment including computer facilities, free WiFi and an excellent selection of stock both for adults and children. A weekly Baby & Toddler Rhyme Time session runs every Thursday from 10.30 - 11am and this is a great opportunity to have a sing-a-long and enjoy entertaining stories with the little ones - all are welcome to attend. At Galleywood library we are proud of our updated, multi-functioning centre as it is at the heart of the community, still offering you a place to glance over the papers or reserve the latest novel. There are many book groups which regularly meet here and are always welcoming to new members. The library is easy to join and membership is free, so come along and see Galleywood Library for yourself. Your library has been given a new boost of life and we can’t wait to see you! The library opening hours are Tues 1-5pm, Thurs 9-1pm, Fri 1-5pm and Sat 9-1pm.

Galleywood Short Mat Bowls Club During the past few months we have had a very busy time with League Matches, Club Competitions and several Friendly Matches. Our very successful Charity Bowlathon took place in January with cheques being sent to Farleigh Hospice and Chelmsford Mencap. For the fourth year running Malcolm Evans won the Doug Godwin Bowlathon Trophy. The Club have also entered Teams in two all day tournaments, one at PML and the other at Hatifield Peverel. Our annual trip to March, in Cambridgeshire, was also a huge success. We have welcomed some new members this season BUT there is always room for more. Therefore if you fancy giving short mat bowls a try then please do come along and join us. Further information can be obtained from Beryl Evans 01245 475208, email bebandmalc@live.co.uk, or Barry Foreman 01245 345665, or if you prefer just pop along on either Monday evenings at Galleywood Infant School, Barnard Road or Wednesday afternoons at the Keene Hall. We look forward to seeing you.

BEAUTY’S LEGACY or The Modern Frankenstein
Created by Mark Finbow & Simon Anthony Rhoden | Based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
Part Bladerunner, part Frankenstein, part Slimming World! Beauty’s Legacy is a sci-fi comedy/drama about revered geneticist Victor, who, using his maladjusted lab assistant as a guinea pig, creates the most beautiful, stylish and vain monster the world has ever seen. This sets off a whirlwind of events that threaten to tear apart his career, his marriage and all known society. Beauty’s Legacy is a brand new piece of writing, loosely inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It looks at how family life is influenced by a media soaked society and examines how much sacrifice should be made in order to achieve ambition. Box Office now open! 01245 358898 or 01245 348756 between 9am-1pm weekdays

NHS 111 NHS 111 is a new service that has been introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services. It provides one, easy-to-remember number that is free to call from landlines or mobiles. You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation. NHS 111 can be used by people with a hearing impairment or communication difficulties, via a textphone by calling 18001 111.
Call 111 iicfal… help fast but
• you need med emergency it’s not a 999 u need to go to • you think yo another NHS A&E or need rvice urgent care se ll or ow who to ca kn ’t n o d u o y • e a GP to call you don’t hav n or lth informatio • you need hea o next out what to d reassurance ab
What happens when you call NHS 111? When you call 111, a trained advisor will ask you questions to find out what’s wrong, give you medical advice and direct you to someone who can help you, like an out-ofhours doctor or a community nurse. If the advisor thinks your condition is more serious, they will direct you to hospital or send an ambulance. If you do not speak English, tell the advisor what language you want to speak and they will get you an interpreter. You can call NHS 111 any time of the day or night, 365 days a year.
Leaflets explaining how NHS 111 works are available in a number of different languages and in easy read format at www.nhs.uk/111 There are now only three numbers to call if you need NHS care urgently: 999 for life-threatening emergencies, your GP surgery and 111.
