We welcome our new Chairman for the 2014/15 financial year, Cllr David Stevenson, who has taken over from Cllr Bob Villa who has been made Mayor of Chelmsford. The Chairman writes… Thank you to everyone who attended our 27th Annual Parish Open Forum on 10 April. This is the annual opportunity to hear reports from the Council on the previous year, and plans for the future. It was also a very special meeting as we presented Certificates to competition winners and Galleywood Parish Council Awards - further details are inside this issue. As we enter the Summer months, Galleywood is gearing up for the first Galleywood Festival. This starts on Sunday 6 July with Galleywood Open Gardens and Farleigh Craft Fair, then from 11 July there is a packed week of events – see centre pages for more detail. We are also continuing to fund the Thursday night Galleywood Youth Club, and there is free tennis coaching at Chelmer Park for youngsters on 8 and 18 August, and a Summer reading challenge at the Galleywood Library: and don’t forget our Phonebox Book Exchange at Pipers Tye which is free and open daily until dusk. Speed Reduction Galleywood Parish Council are pleased to confirm that after a considerable number of years communicating with Essex County Council, the speed limit from Pipers Tye, Galleywood to Readers Corner, Great Baddow has been reduced from 60 mph to 40 mph. It is hoped that the new restrictive section of road will increase road safety for the many school children travelling on foot to Great Baddow High School and general use by other residents. The issue of flooding on the bend at Pipers Tye appears to be a drainage issue and is being dealt with by Essex County Council.

Craft Demonstration Free to All Galleywood WI presents a craft demonstration day on Thursday 11 September 2014 in the Keene Hall, running from 11am – 1.30pm. Demonstration tables will show handicrafts by members including water colour painting, Marquetry, card making, quilting, lace making, beadwork, patchwork, knitting and crochet and flower arranging. Drop in anytime for an informal chance to try knitting and crochet. Flower arranging demonstrations at 11.30 am and 12.15 pm. Browse the sales table and buy WI cakes, preserves and goodies. A light bite lunch tea and coffee will be available to purchase at a modest price. You are most welcome to stay and enjoy a WI meeting with Ray Spiller, 2 – 4pm on “Music Charts”

Storytelling Weekend Do you like a good story? Drama? Intrigue? Mystery? St Michael’s Church will be holding a Storytelling Festival on the weekend of 26, 27 and 28 September. There will be a journey of discovery around the village and many activities to enjoy. Put the date in your diary. Come along and tell us your story. Come and join the storytelling at the Celebrating Life in Our Village Festival in July. Turn to pages 26 and 27 for more details.

Galleywood Short Mat Bowls Club It has been another busy time, with Club Competitions taking place and our League season coming to an end. We’re proud to say that we came 3rd in our Division of the League this year. Well done to all those who played, and also to Barry Foreman the League Team Captain. Following our AGM in April all competition winners were presented with their trophies, followed by a cheese and wine supper. Both Monday evening and Wednesday afternoon practice sessions have been well attended. We have been able to welcome new members, and have also welcomed some previous members back to the Club. There is always room for more members; if you have never played before and fancy giving short mat bowls a try, please come along and see what we are about - you will be made more than welcome. New Volunteers Urgently Needed

Drivers: Can You Help?

ecdp, with the support of our volunteers, encourage disabled people to become less isolated and more involved in their local communities. Many disabled people, with volunteer support, have grown in confidence and made new friends. Harry was socially isolated. With the support of a volunteer his confidence gradually returned and he accessed adult education, training courses and voluntary work which has led on to paid work. Harry is now much happier and confident in all areas of his life. We greatly appreciate all the time and skills our trained volunteers give to the scheme. We would not be able to operate without our team of dedicated and committed volunteers. Galleywood Voluntary Community Care volunteers drive the more frail villagers to appointments at local hospitals, surgeries and clinics when other means of transport are either unavailable or unsuitable. To expand this service, we need to enlarge our pool of drivers. This is not a fixed commitment, but is based on need. As a general rule, drivers make one trip a fortnight and notice is usually given. There is an allowance of 40p a mile, which is paid annually at the end of our financial year. Our drivers are now required by law to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring) check for helping vulnerable adults. If you do not have one or the equivalent former CRB check, the association will arrange one for you, which only requires filling in a form and it is free. Essex Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2014 Essex Libraries Summer Reading Challenge Mythical Maze will invite children to venture into an intricate labyrinth where they will discover a series of mythological creatures including the Yeti; a mermaid; a dragon; the Garuda Bird; Medusa and a unicorn. The activity this year has been designed by Sarah McIntyre, children’s book illustrator, known for titles such as There’s a Shark in the Bath. Children will be encouraged to read any six books of their choice to collect stickers and a medal. In each library children will be able to hunt for the mythological creatures, scan them on smart phones or other devices and then watch as the characters come to life through augmented reality. Mythical Maze is aimed at children aged 3-12 with a special early years version for babies and toddlers. For those aged 11 or about to start secondary school, there will be a special activity called ImagiNation which has been designed by a group of young people in the region working with a local artist and will involve reading and arts activities.

Councillor John Jowers, Cabinet Member for Libraries, Communities and Planning, said: “In 2013 44,000 children in Essex took part in the Summer Reading Challenge, improving reading skills and confidence and having a great time sharing books and celebrating their achievements. Walkers were blessed with lovely weather on our Easter Monday circular walk to West Hanningfield and the rain did not dampen our spring bird watching on Galleywood common. Over 280 children took part in the annual Good Friday Bunny hunt on the Common , and in March three talented actresses presented What the Dickens and brought to life several of Dickens characters in a number of sketches. Recently over 40 people took part in a general knowledge quiz. Galleywood Winner of Galleywood’s Poetry and Limerick Competition 2014 Marilyn Byford put pen to paper and won our first Poetry and Limerick competition. Marilyn’s memories of her early days in Galleywood won the judges over and she was presented with a framed Certificate by Cllr Bob Villa, Chairman of Galleywood Parish Council at the 27th Annual Parish Open Forum on 10 April 2014. The old school on the crossroads holds memories for me A little girl of barely five standing at teachers knee A roaring fire a tray of sand an array of books and toys The sound of children’s voices they all made such a noise The cloakroom had just one cold tap the toilets all outside No flush or wash handbasin not a· place to bide Our lunch was in the keene hall which always smelt of greens children held their noses only I liked them it seems Assembly in the top classroom this I came to dread packed like sardines side by side overseen by the awesome head here boys got the slipper or sometimes had the cane just for talking in the line or something else mundane On nice afternoons in summer we would be taken for a walk crossing to the common such excited talk gathering leaves and wild flowers catkins from trees so tall to put on our nature table in the classroom by the wall No one liked the mornings when the vicar came to call a stern faced strict and surly man he was not liked at all he shouted and he grimaced and waved his arms about he didn’t seem a kindly man of that there is no doubt

I loved story time in summer, someone chose a book then off we’d go to the copse by the church and find a shady nook home time, our class would stand up straight and sing our little prayer Hands together softly so a moment all could share Every year a village fete, a true sight to behold People in their fancy dress from very young to old Tilt the bucket, greasy pole and pillow fights to see Such good entertainment for little ones like me Tug of war and hoopla, perhaps even a fair With roundabouts and swinging boats such excitement there In the Keene Hall competition time for jams and cakes and flowers for needlework and vegetables a clever village ours My cousin and I made gardens on a dish or plate silver lids to make a pond and matchsticks for a gate then came races to enjoy and if you did manage a win a brown envelope was given you with a silver sixpence in Sunny days at weekends jam jars in hand we’d go to the millpond on the common our faces all aglow crested newts and frog spawn damsel flies galore the air was filled with birdsong who could ask for more. We had a concert party and every year or so there was a village pantomime or nice variety show People came from miles around to join in all the fun they had a laugh and sang along so good for everyone When I grew up and married at our lovely church I didn’t want to move away so then began our search eventually with uncles help we found our first real home here in this lovely village a place to call our own

Sue English used to work with deaf students, and developed a love for sign language. It seemed to make sense to use her signing skills when she returned to work after the birth of her fourth child in 2003, so Sue decided to set up a business using sign language for hearing babies. She had learned that deaf children were able to sign to their deaf parents from a very young age – could this work with hearing children? The idea was that the children would be able to sign much earlier than they could speak, and therefore communicate with their parents at an earlier age. Sue used her daughter as a ‘guinea pig’. By ten months, she was signing virtually everything. Sue’s husband had been very sceptical, but when their daughter was able to tell him when she was tired, or when she wanted to look at her book, he began to change his views. Sue set up Babysign in 2004, and she says she hasn’t looked back. Initial problems were persuading parents that this was for hearing children, but eventually the idea caught on. Baby signing is very big in the USA; research there shows it can increase a baby’s spoken vocabulary, can increase IQ by around 12 points, and can enhance the bond between parent and baby. ‘Teaching babysign is the most rewarding job I can imagine’ says Sue. ‘Watching a baby signing to their mother is a most wonderful sight, that I never get tired of’ There is a class running on Mondays in the Keene Hall. Ingredients •4 Romano peppers •40g (1½oz) butter •350g (12oz) chestnut mushrooms, roughly chopped •3tbsp olive oil •4tbsp finely chopped chives •100g (3½oz) feta cheese •50g (2oz) fresh white breadcrumbs •25g (1oz) Parmesan cheese, grated Method 1| Preheat oven to 180C (fan 160C) mark 4. Halve the peppers, keeping stalks on and carefully cut out the seeds. Use a little of the butter to grease a shallow ovenproof dish and put in the peppers side by side, ready to be filled. 2| Fry the mushrooms in the remaining butter and 1 tbsp olive oil until they’re golden and there’s no excess liquid left in the pan. Stir in the chives, then spoon the mixture into the pepper halves. 3| Crumble the feta over the mushrooms. Mix the breadcrumbs and Parmesan in a bowl, then sprinkle over the peppers. 4| Season and drizzle with the remaining olive oil and roast for 45 mins or until golden. Serve warm.

St Michael’s Churchyard One of the secret treasures of Galleywood is St. Michael’s Churchyard. The church was built in 1873 and the churchyard developed from then with the oldest graves dating from that year. Today the churchyard is a place of beauty, tranquillity and peace, which makes it an ideal spot to sit for any reason. Its many seats offer the opportunity to rest and think about issues in your life; maybe remember a loved one or maybe just enjoy the beauty of the Galleywood countryside. All of these can be achieved in the village’s churchyard. The churchyard is maintained by a group of church volunteers, led for the past four years by Pam Chapman. The team includes Pete and Jackie, Rose and Sid, Richard, Derek, Phil, Susan, John, Anne, Steve and Beryl. Anyone is welcome to come along! Pam felt called by God to take on this role and loves every minute of it. The team meet once a month to carry out essential maintenance such as weeding, strimming, pruning, tidying graves and clearing overgrowth. Also, they do special jobs

like planting spring bulbs, laying gutters and drains. In doing so, they maintain the special nature of the churchyard for the loved ones of those buried there and for the village as a whole. Pam enjoys the camaraderie of working with her group and also the fresh air and exercise it provides. She feels it brings her closer to God, and finds His peace when working there, appreciating His love for our world and for Galleywood in particular. Pam and her team think the churchyard is a wonderful place to visit for any reason. They feel it is possible to sit and reflect there in peace, to escape the troubles of the world or to just enjoy the glorious views on offer. The churchyard makes for a good place to visit when walking on the common, as its benches will offer those aching feet some respite. So why not visit the village’s churchyard, Galleywood’s secret treasure, and enjoy the peace and beauty to be found there? The tidy up sessions are advertised in the diary section of this magazine; new helpers are always welcome.

Chaplin Close Allotments We have enjoyed good gardening weather so far this year, with good prospects for the soft fruit season. Most of our plot-holders are well on with the spring sowing and planting processes, and looking forward to their first new potatoes and green peas. Spring flowers have been a welcome sight

where the odd corner has been spared for a touch of eco-friendly colour, and the bumblebees are taking advantage of the pollen on offer. Robins have been the most often seen birds this year, with, unusually, hardly any blackbirds. We are opening the site to visitors on 6 July, as part of the Farleigh Hospice Galleywood Open Gardens. We look forward to a good number coming again for a look-around. We invite Galleywood people to join our short waiting list if they would like to rent one of our plots. 27th Annual Parish Meeting for the Electors Of Galleywood Held on Thursday 10 April 2014 at 7pm at The Keene Hall, Watchouse Road, Galleywood The Chairman welcomed around 45 parishioners, Essex County Councillor Mrs Jenny Chandler, fellow Councillors and Staff to the meeting and was delighted to present the following Awards:

Pride in our Village Road Traffic Poster Competition Youngsters had been encouraged to submit an A4 poster, three categories were created with one clear winner in each group: • Category 1: Artistic Talent Winner: Lucy Gardner, 16 Judges said: “Great picture, very artistic, well done.” • Category 2: Best Storyline Winner: James Blunden, 5 Judges: “Good clear message, good rhyming, great message, well done.” •Category 3: Most Memorable Winner: Daniel Gardner, 7 Judges: “Good clear message reminding us that we don’t know everything, very catchy message love the dinosaur.”

Galleywood Poetry/Limerick Competition for adults A new competition was launched for adults and Cllrs enjoyed reading the entries. The Chairman was delighted to announce that the winner was: Mrs Marilyn Byford The Chairman presented Marilyn with a certificate and Marilyn read her poem to the audience.

Galleywood Parish Council Awards Every four years Galleywood Parish Council invite parishioners to nominate individuals who have made a special contribution to the community of Galleywood. This is a very special opportunity to say a big thank you to our very own unsung heroes. This year six worthy individuals have been nominated and the Chairman called upon each person to come forward and receive their Award. Gillian Parker nominated by Ken Edwards Gillian was Secretary to the Galleywood Vision Group and notwithstanding her limited computer expertise was a key

member. She has also stepped up to be Secretary to the Galleywood Historical Society. Gillian helps tend the garden at the Galleywood Heritage Centre and although sadly she has had to move from the village, she continues to visit regularly. Gillian has also undertaken the task of walking Galleywood footpaths and is helping with updating of the walks leaflets. Hugh Arnold nominated by Ken Edwards In addition to acting as honorary auditor to several local groups including Galleywood Heritage Centre and the Galleywood Historical Society, Hughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice and guidance to groups such as the Galleywood Heritage Centre has been invaluable. He works behind the scenes to make things happen and resolve disagreements. Lucy Moss nominated by Louise Bruder Lucy has volunteered for various projects at the Galleywood Youth Centre over the past three years. She volunteered to run Corner Club, a youth club for young people with disabilities for two years, as well as Plectrooms Music Club straight afterwards!

That’s 4-10pm every Wednesday on top of her own college studies and caring duties for her family. She now also helps to run the Thursday Night Youth Club. Lucy has been instrumental in promoting it and welcoming young people who come for the first time. Lucy started off as a young person from Galleywood, 15 years old and moaning that there was nothing to do for young people of her age in the village. Considering 5 years later as a young adult she is committed to changing this outlook amongst other young people in the area. The nomination is given to recognise her commitment and passion.

Joy has been an important member, always willing to help at community village events and well liked by fellow members, who would be delighted for her to receive an Award in recognition of her valuable work with Galleywood WI.

Sue Kitson nominated by Rev Andy Griffiths Sue has led Friendship Plus (parent and toddler group) as a volunteer for over 5 years, building the team, managing toys,

• Railings on Galleywood Common. Susan Blunden raised concerns regarding the number of broken white railings on Galleywood Common can GPC assist ? Response: the Chairman stated that the issue was discussed through Galleywood Common Liaison Group who have replaced many of the plastic posts, the wooden rails are a particular shape and it has proved difficult to find a local supplier. However, CCC Officer David Ford has the matter in hand. • Funds held in Reserves. Ken Edwards had asked about funding held in reserves at previous meetings and acknowledged GPC’s decision to hold 50% of the precept in reserves. A balance of around £80,000 is therefore available and is discussed under confidential against Future Projects. Ken asked for further details. Response: the Chairman responded that Cllrs are coming forward with ideas which are being discussed. Once projects have been assessed and agreed discussions

will be removed from confidential. Cllr Mrs Janette Potter added that GPC is able to earmark monies from S106 funding which is generated from building developments in the village. GPC will also put forward a S106 request against the forthcoming Temple Farm development in neighbouring Stock Parish. Cllr Bob Harman, Chairman of the Finance & Resources Committee added that Cllrs and Officers are financially prudent in all GPC matters. There are also concerns at National level with regard to greater responsibilities which may be fed down to Parish Councils.

• Old Race Course on Galleywood Common. Hugh Arnold stated that at a recent Galleywood Common Liaison Group meeting the idea to mark out the Old Race Course had been raised. CCC had stated that this would be the responsibility of GPC who would be happy to contribute. Response: the Chairman responded that CCC Officer David Ford had misinterpreted the enquiry and thought it had come from GPC. CCC are fully responsible for maintenance of Galleywood Common. However, it was noted that the Napoleonic Earthworks Sign was paid for by CCC but GPC had agreed to maintain the signage. If the Galleywood Common Liaison Group feel strongly about the project they are invited to write to the Clerk. GPC may be willing to consider the idea but need more detail.

St Michael’s Storytelling Weekends St Michael’s Church are pleased to announce news of their forthcoming Storytelling Weekends. Steve Stickly, Artistic Director and cofounder of Footprints Theatre Trust in Nottingham will be telling stories at Galleywood Infant School on Saturday 12 July and Saturday 27 September. Steve has spent most of his working life as an actor, writer and theatre director. During other moments he has been an ice-cream man, a builders mate, a piano mover, a video maker and a Kleen-e-zee salesman. Steve has been known as Bumbleman to millions of children in the nineties and noughties on BBC Schools Radio. It is also rumoured that he loves good food, laughter, films,

laughter, travel, laughter and…laughter! On each Saturday Steve will be performing two alternating stories for all ages: As Long As It’s Wide and Leg It Larry. See if you can guess where he found the original stories. At St Michael’s Church we would like to hear your stories, stories of love, courage and faith. With this in mind there will be a Story Writing Competition, Art exhibition and Local History display. These will be at the September weekend only. Come and be part of the Story.
