Galleywood Ladies Club At our July meeting The Ladies Club celebrated its 20th Birthday when we were joined by some of our original members. Nearly 50 members and visitors enjoyed a very amusing talk by author Mel Rees, entitled ‘That’s Life!’ telling us about the oddities of his family and upbringing, filling the Keene Hall with shrieks of laughter. We then celebrated with a glass of Pimm’s, strawberries and cream and a wonderful 20th birthday cake made specially for us. A wonderful evening enjoyed by all! Open Gardens Galleywood 2014 On Sunday 6 July 2014, Galleywood once again opened their gardens to support Farleigh Hospice – the event was the start of the Galleywood Festival and brought in something like 150 visitors to enjoy the 8 gardens that were open plus St Michael’s Church on the common who served refreshments. Alongside the Open Gardens, there was also a Craft & Produce Show in the Keene Hall showcasing various crafts, artwork, vegetables and flowers plus the inevitable cakes, sponges and preserves. Open Gardens this year raised £1571 which was an increase of £100 on last year. The quotes from a couple of the gardens illustrate what a lovely day it is and how much the visitors enjoy the opportunity to see ‘over the garden gate’. We would very much welcome some new gardens so if you feel the urge to join in please either contact Christine Hogben at Farleigh Hospice on 01245 457347 or Jane Head Clerk to Galleywood Parish Council. We would like to publicly thank all those who participated and who made the day such a success, here are a few comments from two open gardens…
Specialists in home adaptations for the elderly and disabled
From Wendy & John Cummin “There were questions about many of the plants, but pride of place went to the Brugmansias, or Angels Trumpets. There were raised eyebrows when we told people these are toxic – large doses can kill. Sales of plants, and of drinks and cake, went well. One comment in the visitors book from a young boy simply said ‘your garden made me happy’. What more could you ask?” From Shirley and Alan Thomas “It was just like a summer’s day garden party with friends. Despite the downpour earlier in the morning, the weather was kind; people rested in the garden whilst catching up with friends, partaking of the BBQ, or just watching the fish. We had over 140 visitors. This year Shirley has been busy growing plants from cuttings – we had an amazing display of over 220 plants for sale. They proved to be extremely popular, and raised an additional £225 for Farleigh Hospice.”

Infant School Deputy Retires After 8 years in her current post and a teaching career spanning 38 years Sue Read is retiring from Galleywood Infant School. Sue has achieved outstanding academic success with many children during her 8 years at Galleywood and at least in part we attribute this to the creative curriculum she helped to design, firmly rooted within the local area and rich in first hand experiences. Sue has brought her talents and enthusiasm for music, singing, growing and cooking to enrich the learning for successive cohorts of children. As Chair of Chelmsford and District Infant Music Festival Sue coordinates 3 days of musical workshops and performances each spring by children from 40 local schools. Visits to Parklands Farm and Lathcoats, opportunities to cook and grow food, links with Galleywood Horticultural
Society and with the Village Market have helped children develop an understanding of where their food comes from. A special assembly enabled children, parents, friends, colleagues and Governors to join in thanking Sue for all that she has done for the school and wish her a very long and happy retirement. Sue was presented with a small greenhouse and is excited about being able to propagate and grow a wider range of plants. Sue is married with four grown up children, one granddaughter and is anticipating the arrival of three more grandchildren early in 2015! She is looking forward to spending more time with her family, gardening, cycling and travelling to The Gambia, where she is involved in training teachers to work in primary schools.
Alice and Charlie attended the Chelsea Flower Show with Mrs Read: “We had a lovely day at the Chelsea Flower show. Mrs Read told us what to say to all the visitors about our pea plants and we even got to be filmed! I wrote about the Chelsea flower show in my year book because it will be nice to remember it for a long time.” Children in her class commented: “I liked the maths lesson where we learned to do multiplication because I like learning facts for the maths challenges. When I get stuck in lessons or spell a word wrong Mrs Read helps me. I like her different coloured earrings.” “I remember my first afternoon in Rabbits Class, trying to make our pastel sunflowers as good as Vincent Van Gogh. Mrs Read does lovely art lessons. She makes learning very, very fun, like when we did an underwater collage and we didn’t even do any work!” “Mrs Read has a really soft voice and she helps us sort out arguments” Layla sums up Sue’s willingness to go the extra mile: “Mrs Read always helps the school and does extra things like the Moving on Disco and the Christmas Play and the orchestra and the village market and clubs and doing lots of gardening!”

St Michael’s Church Children’s Activities Luke 18:16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. At St Michael’s Church, the SONLight group is for children aged 4 – 11 and we meet every Sunday at 10:40am. Using the Scripture Union web site, each session follows a theme containing a bible story and a message. We use a whole variety of activities so that the children have fun whilst learning; these have included dressing up, drawing, memory games, quiz sheets, acting, puppets, decorating food and arts and crafts. The children enjoy sharing their learning with the congregation and often have something to take home that they have made.
We always meet in a separate place from the adults and will have a purpose built room in the new year after the church redevelopment. Each session is run by a leader (who prepares the session) and an assistant (who helps on the day.) We would always welcome more children, who will have a great time every week, so if you are interested in coming along to give us a try, or would like more information about what we do, please contact Cathy Groom at cathy.groom@blueyonder.co.uk

Essex County Royal British Legion The Royal British Legion (RBL) was formed in 1921 with the specific role of helping those wounded in WW1. Essex County RBL formed in the same year with the first recorded Branch in the County opening at Shoeburyness on 8 June 1921. This was closely followed in the same month by Branches forming at Kelvedon, Brightlingsea, Dunmow, Southend on Sea, Margaretting, Rickling/Quendon, South Benfleet and West Thurrock. Since WW2 there has hardly been one year that British troops have not been actively involved in military operations around the world. After each conflict the RBL has been there, picking up the pieces. Unlike other Service Fundraising organisations, the RBL has an ongoing and long term obligation to support not only any servicemen and women injured on duty but also their families. For instance, the annual operating costs of the new Personnel Recovery Centre (PRC) at Chevasse VC House in Colchester, (just under £1 million), are shared by the MOD and the RBL. The Centre is designed to help servicemen readjust to civilian life after injury. British troops are currently involved in full scale military operations in Afghanistan in some of the most dangerous and tragic circumstances. As well as units from Colchester Garrison, there is also the garrison at Carver Barracks in NW Essex. The IED Search and Disposal Teams in 33 and 101 Engineer EOD Regiments serving in Carver Barracks have suffered numerous fatalities and serious casualties in Afghanistan and their squadrons are permanently rotating on operational tours there. Whatever one’s personal, moral and political views on their involvement, British troops are still deployed there in Afghanistan, carrying out their duties in the
16
most hazardous and harrowing conditions. Never more than now do they need our support! It was appropriate therefore that the official launch of the Essex County RBL Poppy Appeal 2013 took place at Carver Barracks in late October. This year the Poppy Appeal in Essex alone raised a staggering £1,059,142.27. Best known for the annual Cenotaph Parade, Festival of Remembrance, the National Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Services, the Legion is also a proactive campaigning organisation that promotes the welfare of current and former serving members of the Armed Forces. Essex County RBL is one of the largest RBL Counties in UK with a current membership of nearly 14,000, belonging to 75 Branches and 21 Clubs scattered across Essex. Because of its geographical and numerical size, the Branches in Essex RBL are split into Groups for administrative purposes. In addition there is an active membership of the RBL Riders Branch based in Essex. Formed in 2004 and dominated by former and current HM Forces personnel, it has some high profile celebrity support from Hayley Westenra, Simon Weston and The Hairy Bikers who are all members and wear their distinctive badge on their leather jackets. Riders regularly organise fundraising Runs and Annual Rallies, such as the RBLR 1000 Iron Butt Rally, where competitors are expected to complete 1000 miles in 24 hours to raise money for the Poppy Appeal to support past and present members of HM Forces and their dependants. Since 2004, the RBLR Branch has alone raised £540,000. The Royal British Legion also plays an active role within the local community in Essex and great reliance is placed on
Galleywood Grapevine
Computer Problems members carrying out work for the serving and ex-service community in their local areas. To raise local public awareness and to encourage more people to join, RBL Branches participate in such activities as County Shows, Local Fetes/Fairs, Open Evenings, Concerts, Armed Forces Days (previously Veterans Days), Carnivals, Air Shows, Military Tattoos, Open Days, Annual Group Christmas Carol Services. This year marks the Centenary of the start of World War One with numerous largescale events being organised across the UK. The losses from WW1 were felt in every town and village as demonstrated by the number of monuments on nearly every village green or churchyard. It is therefore appropriate that this Centenary has a strong local flavour. Accordingly, local RBL Branches will be arranging events to ensure that the events and sacrifices of a century ago are not forgotten and that the nation is reminded of its collective debt to those who were slaughtered in that conflict and to those who are still serving their country today.

Litter A poem by Marilyn Byford Since I started my litter picking I have wandered the village much more Some folk say just how do you do that it must be a terrible chore Oh no I reply with some vigour there’s nothing quite like what I do I love making the village look tidy I only wish other people did too There’s no need to go dropping your rubbish there are bins provided for you So please when you have some to dispose of remember the right thing to do Takeaway papers and boxes sauce pots and tissues galore Mcdonalds and pizza leftovers wrapped up neatly then thrown on the floor Please don’t throw your rubbish and wrappers wherever you happen to be It all looks so messy and dirty and just lays there for pickers like me Bottles and cans are a big problem plastic and glass just as bad too Please take your rubbish home with you if there’s no bin right next to you Doggy poo bags are disgusting thrown in ditches or hanging from trees Please dispose of these bags correctly don’t just leave them in places like these It all looks so very unsightly please dispose of your litter with care Remember your thrown away rubbish becomes somebody else’s nightmare

Karate Kids Achieve! On 9 August 2014 three junior students from Chelmsford Karate Club, Galleywood were successful in passing their black belt exams held this year at the Goju Ryu Karate International training camp in Chichester. The Trio, all from Galleywood, are 13 year old twins Leonnie and Amelia Ridgwell and 15 year old Scott Martin. The training and exams to reach this level are both demanding and rigorous, and their dedication plus continued effort for the last 5 years has reaped the deserved awards. Well done to Scott, Leonnie and Amelia. Kevin Nason 7th Dan Senior Instructor for GKI and Chelmsford Karate Club

World War I Exhibition Galleywood Heritage Centre will be holding an exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War on Saturday and Sunday 8 & 9 November 2014. Sponsored by Galleywood Parish Council, this exhibition will be open both days 10am 4pm and entry will be free. The exhibition will obviously include details of local casualties and some of the local survivors, but all aspects of the war will be covered. We will be covering the hostilities in Europe which led to the war and its progression, mainly on the Western Front, and also the soldiers temporarily based in Galleywood including some letters written by them from the front line.
be information about relatives of current Galleywood parishioners who died in the war, no matter where they lived. This board does include details of two French soldiers who died with the French army as their relative lives in Galleywood! If there is still anyone in Galleywood who would like a relative commemorated on this board, please do let me know. There is room for a few more! Outside contributors to this exhibition will include the Western Front Association, Hylands House, and author Andy Begent. On Sunday 9 November (Remembrance Sunday) we will be respecting the two-minute silence at 11.00 am, with a recording of “The Last Post” followed by “Reveille”.
We will be covering life in the trenches, the war at sea and in the air, including a special display on the Battle of Jutland.
Background music, contemporary to the time, will be played and refreshments will be available throughout the exhibition.
There will be much information on the Home Front in WW1, especially the role of women, and also the war poets and a display entitled “War Horse”.
Please do come and visit this exhibition.
A “miscellaneous” board will cover topics such as “boy soldiers”, “shot at dawn”, and “Wipers Times”. Perhaps of most interest to many parishioners will be the “Wall of Remembrance” board. On this there will

Leslie receives award from the Russian Embassy Between August 1941 and May 1945, about 1400 merchant ships sailed in convoys from the UK, Iceland and North America, taking essential supplies to the people of the Soviet Union. These convoys were escorted by ships of the Royal Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the US Navy. On one of the Royal Navy vessels, The HMS Formidable, was Gunner Leslie Jenkins who spent six months on escort duty based at Scapa Flow. Leslie’s family were fully involved in WW1 his mother was in the ATS, his father in the Royal Engineers, one brother in the Royal Armoured Corps, the other in the Royal Military Police. On 10 March 2014 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding the Ushakov Medal to British veterans of the Arctic Convoys. Leslie collected his award at an official ceremony on 28 August 2014. Last year the Ministry of Defence produced the Arctic Medal, as a sign of their own recognition of the heroic part played by the likes of Leslie Jenkins. Having recently received his Arctic Medal, this move by the Russian Federation to show their appreciation, is the icing on the cake.

Community Agents The Community Agents Essex service began in July 2014, born from the success of Village Agents.
Community Agents builds upon the strengths of an innovative new partnership approach creating a countywide network of agents and volunteers to support vulnerable older people and informal carers across Essex. Agents and Volunteers will do this by promoting health, independence, reducing social isolation and helping to find practical solutions to daily living challenges faced by people in both rural and urban areas. A partnership of four Voluntary and Community organisations - Rural Community Council of Essex, British Red Cross, Age UK Essex and Essex Neighbourhood Watch - has come together with Essex County Council to develop this targeted countywide solution to supporting older people to remain independent for as long as possible. Community Agents will work with individuals to help them find/develop their own solutions to their issues from within their own networks/community. To take advantage of this free, confidential and trusted information service, please contact Brenda Smith, your Community Agent, on 07540 720612, Freephone 0800 977 5858 or local rate 01376 574341 to arrange a home visit. Alternatively, you can email enquiries@caessex.org.uk.

Hedgerow Management
Guidance from Essex County Council on Hedgerows abutting a public Highway Sometimes a hedge can become overgrown and overhang the pavement outside your property. In this instance, your local authority can force you to cut it back or even to remove it, if it’s causing a danger or obstruction to pedestrians on the pavement. Up until a few years ago, there was no legal restriction on the height of a hedge, but that changed in 2005. The recommended height is now set at 2m (6½ ft). Essex County Council do not look after trees, shrubs and hedges on private land, including land that is next to roads and pavements. Most trees and hedges by the roadside are on land owned by private landowners, district, city and parish councils, housing associations and homeowners. It is the landowner’s responsibility to look after these areas and

have a duty of care to take reasonable steps to prevent or reduce, as far as possible, the risk of injury or damage that could be caused to anyone else. Examples are: • overhanging branches reducing the width or blocking the view of the road • overhanging branches that reduce the height or clearance of the road for tall vehicles such as double deck buses • a damaged or diseased tree in danger of falling onto the road or pavement • overgrown hedges obscuring road signs or street lights. You can report an overgrown hedgerow or vegetation via the Essex County Council website. Visit www.essexhighways.org/ and click on ‘Report a highways problem’. Or report to the Parish Council Office on 01245 358898/348756.
