Vicar completes his Ice Bucket Challenge St Michael’s Church on the Common in Galleywood was the venue for the Vicar Andy Griffiths to complete his challenge. In his usual style Andy chose to do it on a Sunday 7 September 2014 in front of a large congregation. A paddling pool was brought into the church and a full bucket of iced water was duly tipped over his head! One parishioner said “Andy does take up almost any challenge set him but doing it in the Church and including the congregation was genius” For more details and information about Andy Griffiths contact the Church.

Community Choral Project for Galleywood Viewers who have watched the choral projects led by Gareth Malone on TV have witnessed the powerful positive effects of choral singing on a community. Galleywood is now to have its own project with a specially composed cantata by Eric Withams, a local composer. A similar work he composed three years ago for Great Baddow attracted over one hundred singers and musicians and played to full houses at the two concluding concerts. This cantata which is entitled “Gavelwode”, one of the ancient names for Galleywood, tells of the life and times of the village with solos and choral numbers in a light and accessible style. Singers of all ages and experience are

welcome, and need not necessarily be residents of Galleywood. Children from St. Michael’s Junior School are to be involved. The cantata will be performed in St Michael’s Church, Galleywood, on 12 & 13 June 2015. The work is to be conducted by Steve Rumsey, an experienced choral director and music teacher, and rehearsals will be weekly, commencing in March. There will be a Launch Day and choral workshop on Saturday 7 March from 10am till midday in St. Michael’s Junior School when some of the songs will be introduced, and further details announced. All interested singers and helpers are invited to contact Eric Withams on 01245 471649, or email ejwithams@tiscali.co.uk

Superfast Essex Broadband A number of parishioners have been asking Galleywood Parish Council about broadband in the village. Here is the latest news from Superfast Essex Programme.

The best way to find out the latest information for your area is to use the Postcode Checker on our website. This is being updated as the programme progresses and another update of information is expected before Christmas. I can confirm that the majority of Galleywood is already indicated as being covered by commercial plans and is therefore not in the scope of our programme (102 postcode areas). Three postcode areas are currently due to be upgraded to fibre – with work starting next year in one area, and in 2016 for the two others. There are currently no plans for any infrastructure upgrades in the remaining 11 postcodes. However, in these areas BT has assured us that as a result of general network improvements, premises here will be able to receive download speeds of at least 2Mbps by the end of summer 2016. We are also currently planning a second

phase of work aiming to take superfast coverage up from 87% to 95%. All areas not currently included in any existing infrastructure upgrade plans will be considered for inclusion in Phase 2. If residents in Galleywood have not done so already, I would encourage them to complete our Make the Connection survey to register their demand for superfast broadband. We use this feedback to help inform our future plans where possible. By completing the survey, you also have the option to sign up to receive our Programme Update newsletter, which is also sent to Essex parish councils. Please do keep an eye on our website, it will be updated with new information when it becomes available. Lucy Dickinson make.theconnection@essex.gov.uk www.superfastessex.org www.essex.gov.uk

This poem was edited by Andy Griffiths from stanzas composed by St Michael’s School members on 18 October 2014. Jesus, you are number one, Our love for you would weigh a tonne, Your love’s surrounding everyone, If I was a hotdog, you’d be the bun. Jesus, we know you’re the boss. You died for us – a boss on a cross, And the job God gave to you was done: Shine today like the rising sun. Jesus, we know you’re the best, Help us work and help us rest. Make us happy, make us good, Be number one in Galleywood.

On Sunday 5 July from 11am - 5pm, Galleywood will once again be hosting Open Gardens in support of Farleigh Hospice. We would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to join in this event. This will be the fourth year Galleywood has joined the Open Gardens events supporting Farleigh Hospice. Can it be even bigger and better this year ? Yes it can if you join in – gardens do not need to be National Trust status or large. It is enough that they are interesting and that anyone visiting gets a warm and friendly welcome. Christine Hogben in the Community Fundraising team at Farleigh Hospice would love to speak to you and answer any queries or allay your fears. She can be contacted on 01245 457347, email christine.hogben@farleighhospice.org or please contact Galleywood Parish Council office on 01245 358898

Christmas Luncheon for Galleywood Senior Citizens Once again Galleywood Parish Council organised the ever-popular Christmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens at the Keene Hall in December. One hundred parishioners enjoyed a lovely festive cooked dinner followed by a special Christmas Quiz devised by ex-Councillor and Chairman Ted Hawkins. Malcolm Watson led the singing of carols and seasonal songs accompanied by Rosemary Taylor on the piano. The afternoon was rounded off by a visit from Father Christmas and everyone went home with a box of chocolates. Photographs courtesy of John Cummin

St Michael’s Church No matter your connection to St Michael’s Church, everybody has had some contact with church music. Whether you enjoy singing along to a song, simply listening or watching a performance, music is one of the few genuine bridges that reach everyone. For that reason, it’s an enormous privilege to be part of the church choir. We’re one of the few churches in this area to still have a choir with altos and basses (and occasionally tenors!) We sing old favourites such as “Praise my Soul the King of Heaven” and “Thine be the Glory” to more modern pieces like “10,000 Reasons” and “Cornerstone” - plus everything in between! The choir also has a range of anthems that are sung at special services, weddings and Christmas. Favourites include Mozart’s “Jubilate” and Handel’s “Messiah” and a beautiful arrangement of “Advent Peace Canon” by Ruth Elaine Schram.

12

Our repertoire is now huge with enormous variety. We’re also proud to play a part in the wider community. We’ve sung to visitors at the Open Gardens weekend, and are asked to sing at up to 20 weddings a year! Singing at a wedding is a real pleasure. Everyone, including us, is there to celebrate such a special occasion. Couples often choose well- known hymns, as well as well-known tunes that have some special weddingbased words. We realise that this is a special day for the couple and their guests, which brings some pressure – we always want to do our best.

Domestic Cleaning and Ironing Same dedicated maid each week. Competitive hourly rates.

For the last two years we’ve combined with the choir from St Michael’s Junior School to present a joint Christmas anthem at the Carol Service. The children have learned their part at school and the church choir have done so at choir practice. Then, the week before the service we all meet up and bring it together. It has worked perfectly and has been the highlight of the Carol Service! One of the nicest things about the church choir is the range of ages and backgrounds of its members. Our youngest members have just left primary school and our oldest, well, we have one or two in their 80s, but you’d never know from their singing! We practise every other Friday preparing music for each Sunday, special services, events and weddings. We currently have a couple of vacancies in the choir, so if you would like to join us, please contact Ruth Collin via email at mike.arnold@blueyonder.co.uk or call 01245 474497

Community Agents The Community Agents Essex service began in July, born from the success of Village Agents. Community Agents builds upon the strengths of an innovative new partnership approach creating a countywide network of agents and volunteers to support vulnerable older people and their informal carers across Essex. Agents and Volunteers will do this by promoting health, independence, reducing social isolation and helping to find practical solutions to daily living challenges faced by people in both rural and urban areas. A partnership of four Voluntary and Community organisations - Rural Community Council of Essex, British Red Cross, Age UK Essex and Essex Neighbourhood Watch - has come together with Essex County Council to develop this targeted countywide solution to supporting older people to remain independent for as long as possible. Community Agents will work with individuals to help them find/develop their own solutions to their issues from within their own networks/community. To take advantage of this free, confidential and trusted information service, and to arrange a home visit, please contact your Community Agent direct, John Peart on 07540 720611 or freephone 0800 977 5858 or local rate 01376 574341. Alternatively, you can email enquiries@caessex.org.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.

Galleywood Heritage Centre In 2014 visitors to Galleywood Heritage Centre enjoyed illustrated talks on a variety of subjects, displays on different aspects of Galleywood History and also walks around the Common. The highlight of the year however was the two day WW1 exhibition over the weekend of 8 and 9 November attended by around 300 visitors. As well as details of the casualties on Galleywood’s War Memorial various aspects of the Great War were featured such as the role of the war horse, the battle of Jutland, the war in the air, on land and at sea . Hylands House’s use as a hospital was covered as was the role of North Weald airfield. On Saturday 8 the local branch of the Western Front Association were in attendance with useful information including details of Essex Regiment soldiers. The Trustees of the Centre would like to thank Galleywood Parish Council for their sponsorship of this Exhibition, and all who contributed information and memorabilia. We are now planning activities, talks and fund raising events for 2015. Following popular demand we will be repeating the WW1 Exhibition for one day only on Sunday 15 November. Another major event will be held on Sunday 19 July to commemorate the 70th anniversary of both Victory in Europe Day and Victory over Japan Day. If anyone has memories, photographs or memorabilia of these two events please contact Wendy Cummin on 01245 250499 or e-mail wendy.gf@blueyonder.co.uk

Winter Long dark days and leafless trees The winter slithers in with ease frosty morns and misty nights will snow come when winter bites? Robin redbreast comes along entertains us with his song he’ll stay with us that’s for sure until winter turns to spring once more A strong wind blows its icy blast brings the threat of snow at last before too long the snowflakes fall thick and fast soon covering all a different landscape shows quite soon in the eerie light of the winter moon Sly old fox comes out to feed will he do his usual deed steal a chicken from its pen

A poem by Marilyn Byford Then quickly hurry home again When morning comes there’s not a sound with so much snow upon the ground then I hear children’s voices loud and shrill As they drag their sledges up the hill They play and slide without a care not noticing the freezing air until with fingers stiff and sore They make their journey home once more Outside the snow falls heavier still Building up on the window sill Glad we’re home says a little one we’re safe and warm but had such fun Making slides and snowmen too So many lovely things to do Now we are tired and need to rest But this day was the very best

Galleywood Youth Club The Galleywood Youth Club received an early Christmas present – a £7000 cash boost from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) The Youth Club has been established for just under a year – although the centre where it is based has been in operation for many years - and offers a weekly place for teenagers from the village to meet and take part in various activities. The project is run by adult volunteers and is based at the Galleywood Youth Centre in Watchouse Road. Youngsters have access to facilities including pool tables, games consoles,

table football and a kitchen area. They also regularly go out on excursions and trips. The money given to the club means the group has guaranteed funding to recruit and train more volunteers over the next year so the youth club can continue to encourage young people to become involved in positive activities. The cash was given to the club after they successfully bid to the OPCC for a New

Initiatives Fund, which is money made available to community safety, voluntary and community groups to fund projects to prevent and tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. Lindsay Whitehouse, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, who went to meet the teenagers and to see firsthand how the money will help, said: “This type of project is exactly what the New Initiatives Fund exists for. The Galleywood Youth Project is providing teenagers with an excellent venue to meet and socialise as well as offering them the opportunity to take part in trips and activities that will help build their confidence.”

Louise Bruder, a volunteer at the Youth Club, said: “It is really fantastic to receive this money as it is going to make this project more sustainable and we have already recruited three volunteers.” Cllr David Stevenson, Chairman of Galleywood Parish Council, added: “I’m really over the moon with the money the youth project has received. They really are doing great things here and that money will certainly help it continue.” Galleywood Parish Council has also provided financial support to the youth club and has purchased equipment for them including games consoles.

People & ideas wanted Do you live in, work in or have some connection with our village? Would you just like to have a friendly chat to someone? If so, you are invited to a series of coffee mornings in 2015. Share your thoughts on what a good neighbour means for you.

Galleywood Grapevine

So just what can you and I do to be a good neighbour? Here are a few practical suggestions… • If you see a neighbour’s rubbish bag blowing around, why not take a few seconds to secure so it doesn’t blow away. Under a stone, in a nearby bush - whatever’s handy. • You can clear snow and ice from pavements yourself. It’s unlikely that you’ll be sued or held responsible if someone is injured on a path or pavement if you’ve cleared it carefully. A Government website even tells us how to do it! www.gov.uk/clear-snow-road-path-cycleway • Offer to give a neighbour a lift - eg to a Galleywood Good Neighbour Coffee morning! To be continued in the next edition…

Galleywood remem On 12 November 2014 we were given yet another opportunity to remember Stan Church and his contribution. Given that the two Scots Pine we planted today could last seven hundred years, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future I first came across Stan in 2002 when we both sat on the Galleywood Footpath Committee, a noble body that debated the state of the village footpaths. Neither Stan or I were natural committee people and we both felt the urge to get out into the countryside and do something. We carried out a site survey which revealed enough work for the next few years and GPC were persuaded to join ECC Parish Paths Partnership which allowed a small group of volunteers to get to grips with the necessary work.

26

Stan’s advice was invaluable, based on his wealth of experience with BTCV, in setting up the group GRoW (Galleywood Rights of Way), advising us on the tools to buy and showing us how to use some of the less familiar ones such as the Shuvholer. Stan’s favourite tool was the Irish Brushing Hook with which he showed great skill and stamina. Stan’s last working party with the volunteers was on 25 January 2012. Towards the end Stan found his niche in the group tending our bonfires, and we had some famous ones in St Michae’ls

mbers Stan Church Churchyard, firstly clearing the laurel, and last year clearing the self sown larch Our abiding memory of Stan was of his friendly ‘can do’ attitude, and the way he would take new members under his wing, showing them how to use the tools, ‘let the saw do the work’ was his favourite saying. At coffee break Stan was a fund of good stories about his childhood and his exploits in the war, particularly his hairy retreat from Dunkirk In his latter years the only thing that held Stan back was that he was hard of hearing. When we were erecting the steps on FP54 near the small copse Dave Mowbray had just had a power winch fitted to his Landrover and was dying to use it. We set things up to drag a small tree root out and

Galleywood Grapevine

were just about to attach the wire only to find Stan had whipped it out by hand with the 6’ bar. The flint clad pillar erected to celebrate Stan’s 90th birthday on 20 May 2008 was yet another example of Stan’s keeness. He helped erect the pillar not knowing what it was for, and we had to send him away on another job when it came to fitting the brass plaque. After the grand opening ceremony there was a very telling photograph of everyone standing around chatting, with Stan in the background cleaning the tools and loading them into the wheelbarrow The plaque on Church’s View says it all “Stan Church - a true countryman” Malcolm Stuart

Galleywood Short Mat Bowls Club A very successful quiz was held in October which attracted over 70 participants. In January we are holding a bowls marathon we call a “Bowlathon” to raise money for Air Ambulance and Farleigh Hospice. Our social group enjoyed a trip up the Thames, afternoon tea and a Christmas dinner together. For early next year we are to take a trip on a sailing barge from Maldon and visit Air Ambulance HQ. We continue to hold friendly bowls matches with neighbouring clubs, win or lose we always have fun. We have gained a few more members including a student who joins us in the Keene Hall. If you like the idea of becoming a member don’t be shy just come along to the Keene Hall on a Wednesday afternoon or Barnard Rd Infants School on a Monday evening you will be made very welcome, or telephone Beryl on 01245 475208.

Recycle more…let’s get to 50% Chelmsford City Council’s Recycling Team recently visited residents in Galleywood in and around the Barnard Road estate. As part of the ongoing campaign to encourage higher levels of recycling the team called at all properties to ask residents if they required any new recycling bags or boxes. We had many requests and delivered all the new recycling receptacles to residents, if you would like any additional bags or boxes please contact us through the details below. We also provided information about the Council’s recycling services and spoke to residents about our new small electrical collections. We also took the opportunity to raise awareness of the kerbside collection of small Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which the Council have been collecting since last September. Any small electrical item which has a plug or has been powered by batteries can be recycled in a carrier bag in or next to the green box. Please do not place batteries out for collection as they will not be accepted, to recycle your batteries then please visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/batteries We have also introduced an improved recycling scheme to residents in flats in the area; residents are now able to recycle plastic, cardboard and food waste, as well the existing collection of glass, cans and paper. Chelmsford’s current recycling rate is 46.72 % but we need to increase this further to at least 50% next year. We would like to thank all residents for your continued commitment to reducing and recycling as much of your waste as possible. There are lots of ways to find out more about recycling. You can check out our YouTube video at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/recyclingfilms Contact the Service Development Team at recycling@chelmsford.gov.uk or 01245 615800

Sheila Norton As a local author – a Galleywood resident for the past ten years, and an Essex girl my whole life – I’ve always been grateful for the support I’ve had from local people. So I’m pleased to have this opportunity to share a little of my news and my background as a writer. Yesterday and Ticket to Ride are available in paperback and as Kindle books from www.amazon.co.uk where you can also find all of Sheila’s previous novels

In November my book Yesterday was awarded Guardian Legend Times SelfPublished Book of the Month – a great honour. I started self-publishing in 2011, after previously having eight novels published by a traditional publisher. It was something of a gamble. Self-publishing has now become a respectable option, and mainstream publishing is undergoing a difficult time, so it seemed logical to go solo as a self-publisher with Amazon, taking control of my own career. But it’s a lonely experience, so winning an award like this was a major confidence boost. Yesterday was the first novel I’ve written in a new genre. My earlier novels were romantic comedies but Yesterday, and my newest book Ticket to Ride, have an element of mystery and are set in recent history. Yesterday has a background of the Mods’ and Rockers’ years during the early

34

Sixties – yes, that era is now considered ‘history’! And part of the background of Ticket to Ride is the enforced migration of children to Australia, which continued until the 1960s. So it’s a complete change of direction for me. I’m often asked how I got started as a writer. Well, since I was very young, I’ve always written stories for fun. (I was a strange child!). It remained a hobby until my three daughters were little, when I started writing children’s stories which were published by the ‘Brownie’ magazine. I didn’t tell many people what I was doing – it wasn’t so common then to have such aspirations. I didn’t know any other writers, and had no relevant qualifications apart from English A-level. But in 1993 I entered a short story competition in ‘Writing Magazine’ and won first prize. Two years later, I won another first prize, and was then

Galleywood Grapevine

judged ‘Winner of Winners’, which involved attending a posh ‘do’ in London to receive a prize. This gave me the confidence to submit a story to Woman’s Weekly. It was accepted – and then I was on a roll. Over the following ten years or so, I had over 100 short stories published in women’s magazines. But slowly the opportunities dwindled, as magazines now publish far less fiction. The next step had to be a novel! I’d tried before, but without much luck. I’d probably tried to be too serious, or too clever, but finally I wrote just what came naturally: a light-hearted story about an ordinary working mum approaching her 50th birthday, whose life was hectic and difficult but very funny. The Trouble With Ally

eventually became my first published novel in 2003. During those earlier years as a published author, I worked full-time in a busy job (very few authors earn a living from writing!), and spent my spare time on the novels. I never did a writing course or read any how-to books and didn’t have an agent, so everything was learned ‘on the job’ with the help of my editors. I’m now retired from the day job, so I can write whenever I like. I’ve been very lucky to have achieved my lifelong ambition – doing what I’ve always enjoyed. So thank you to everyone who buys and reads my books, for your continued support. Sheila Norton www.sheilanorton.co.uk
