Inform Galleywood Over the next three months St Michael’s Church is launching a new project called “Inform Galleywood”. With the help of volunteers from the congregation we will provide space, computers and time at the Church to help people find information and sources of practical help. The volunteers will help people find the information they need. We won’t offer advice - that’s too complex for a small organisation - but we will be able to help people find out what advice they might need, and where to get it. If someone needs complex advice, we will direct them to Citizens’ Advice, or other group more able to supply that help. Where a person has received advice, but feels they need a helping hand to follow that advice, volunteers will offer support and encouragement. This new venture will work alongside Galleywood Good Neighbours to help our community help itself. This step is taken by the Church as it continues to find ways to help the people who live locally, and whose needs might not yet be met by state authorities increasingly under pressure. Please watch Galleywood Grapevine Community Magazine, the Church website and Facebook page for more information.

Litter A poem by Marilyn Byford Our litter campaign is ongoing we get kind remarks by the score What a good job you are doing the village looks lovely once more Do you know why people leave litter? I’m afraid not I say tongue in cheek but I tell you if we didn’t clear it we would be knee deep in it after a week Us litter pickers are like detectives and report anything odd that we see we once found a dining suite dumped on the roadside looked like someone was coming for tea table and chairs and a sideboard all set out on the side of the road it appeared overnight on a weekend but no one saw a lorry unload Fridges and freezers discarded in the village’s quieter spots Builders rubble garden cuttings and topsoil kettles saucepans and pots Clothes stuffed in black bin liners shoes just strewn any old where smaller things we manage to gather bigger stuff has to stay there The council are summoned to remove it they really are on the ball The rubbish is duly collected and no one would know it had been there at all Cigarette packs cans and bottles all discarded without any thought I hope the people that litter know there’s a big fine if they ever get caught So we carry on gathering litter carry as much as we can If it worsens much more than it is now we shall need not a bag but a van

Volunteers in the Community On Friday 13 March, we were honoured to be asked to attend an event at Hylands House for volunteers in the community. Wendy was nominated for her work as the Archivist at the Galleywood Heritage Centre and me for turning out in all weathers to take photos of many village events. Also for building the New Heritage Archive taking over from where Ron White left off. The evening was a great success, around 250 volunteers from all over the City and surrounding villages were treated to a
welcoming reception in Hylands House and a buffet dinner in the Pavilion thereafter. Four members of the Chelmsford operatic and dramatic society entertained us after dinner with their fantastic voices with the whole room joining in (with song sheet) to Volare and Amore. A great ending to an enjoyable evening. John and Wendy Cummin John and Jill Bellamy also attended the evening in recognition of the work they have undertaken for the village of Galleywood

Over the last few months a Galleywood Good Neighbours group has been meeting to find out if there is anything that is ‘missing’ in Galleywood; an activity, a service, a provision… With this in mind, two things have happened: 1 A number of articles have appeared in the Grapevine with some basic ideas to help individuals to be better neighbours to each other 2 A series of open mornings have been organised, two of which have taken place (in February and March) and a final one is to take place on Friday 10 April, all at the Keene Hall. The first two meetings have welcomed about 60 different individuals who have had an opportunity to meet new people, make suggestions and, in some cases, offered assistance to whatever may emerge.
Some outcomes so far: • Good contacts made to others who may be able to assist in canvassing opinion. • Social and leisure events have been suggested – on an occasional or regular basis. • Many comments made on the number of opportunities that already exist • A number of people have already expressed an interest in taking this project forward. STOP PRESS Friday 8 May 10am-12noon Galleywood Good Neighbours Social Coffee Morning at Keene Hall
So just what can you and I do to be a good neighbour? As the days brighten and lengthen, more of us are about in the village and starting to take holidays, so here are a few more practical suggestions to encourage good neighbourly behaviour. • When you pass someone, why not smile and say just ‘Hello’? There is no need if you don’t want to start a conversation however a friendly greeting will brighten up the day for both of you. Its simple, its free and we can all do it. • When your neighbour is away you could offer to park a car in their driveway to make it look like someone is at home – it might also keep the streets clearer of parked cars. • If you already know a neighbour, consider a ‘service swap’. You might offer the occasional babysit in return for feeding the cats; you might mow the lawn, they might cut a hedge. Several of these were sent in to us – so put your thinking caps on and share your own ideas with us. Send them to: Ken Edwards, 2 Vale End, Galleywood, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 8NZ. kenedwards2012@btinternet.com To be continued in the next edition…

Record Breakers It is going to be a record breaking summer as more children than ever are encouraged to take part in Record Breakers the Summer Reading Challenge for 2015 in Essex Libraries. The national Challenge is produced by The Reading Agency who are working in association with Guinness World Records, bringing together fact and fiction and helping young readers to discover some wonderful and truly amazing records from around the world. Children will need to read six books of their choice and will collect stickers in six categories including ‘Animal Magic’, ‘Cool Tech’ and ‘Action! Adventure!’ to collect their medal. Older children will be able to take part in ImagiNation a reading and arts programme that gives everyone a chance to find and read books they enjoy and develop their creativity. Record Breakers and ImagiNation will start on Saturday 11 July and run until Saturday 5 September in all libraries and mobile libraries in Essex. It is free and open to all children. Councillor Roger Hirst, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Libraries, Planning and the Environment said: “Giving children a challenge that will encourage reading for pleasure in libraries during the long summer break supports their reading confidence, gives them a sense of achievement and ensures they are ready for a successful return to school in September.”

A Brief History of the G The Racecourse on Galleywood Common was the scene of the Chelmsford Races for at least 176 years from 1759 to 1935 and then reverted to Pony-racing until 1939. The Chelmsford Chronicle, launched in 1764, was the first newspaper to publish an account of the Chelmsford Races. It was a three-day event in August with races being the best of three two-mile or four-mile heats - prizes were £50. Horses had to be entered for each race on the previous Saturday at the Black Boy Inn in Chelmsford. In 1770 King George III announced that he was pleased to give the sum of 100 guineas as prize money to be called the ‘Queen’s Plate’ on the second day of the usual Chelmsford Races for four year old mares. The development of thoroughbred horses by English breeders brought about a change from 1776 onwards in racing in ‘heats’ to ‘dash racing’ - the races that are run today. A kind of Grandstand was maliciously set on fire in 1779 and was rebuilt in 1785. Horse-drawn carriages at the side of the course were used as grandstands and refreshment bars. Summer Race Meetings at Galleywood with

Public Breakfasts, Assemblies, Concerts and Balls were the great social occasions of the year. Special Balls were arranged for ‘respectable farmers and tradesmen’ and Public Dances for the ‘lower classes’. There were all the attractions of Prize-fighting, Dog-fights, Rat-hunts and Cock-fighting also Dancing Booths, Sparring Booths, Booths where ‘terrible melodramas’ were performed and the popular games of chance, roulette and the three-card trick. During the Napoleonic Wars a large star-shaped Fort with artillery batteries, redoubts and earthwork fortifications was built in 1803 on the racecourse astride the Margaretting Road to counter a possible invasion threat on the Essex coast. These defences were intended to block an advance on London along the road from Maldon, which runs through Galleywood. The defences were decommissioned before the defeat of Napoleon and the northern loop of the Racecourse was realigned. The 1860s were the heyday of horseracing on Galleywood Common. There were three
Galleywood Grapevine
Galleywood Racecourse meetings each year of two days each. The Admiral Rous Inn (now a private residence) with a spacious Tea Garden was built in 1860 near the Racecourse. It was named after the famous Admiral Rous, the ‘Dictator of the Turf’ and Senior Steward of the Jockey Club, who frequently visited and officiated at the Chelmsford Races. Livery stables and accommodation was available at local Inns and farms and thousands of racegoers flocked to the meetings Galleywood’s population at that time was only 800. Racing at Galleywood was no easy task. The hilly nature of the track was quite unequalled in England and the rise to the winning post four furlongs from home seemed like a mountainside to the rider. The arrival of enclosed racecourses in the 1870s made it difficult for unenclosed courses on common land like Galleywood to survive and to make matters worse the Royal Plate was discontinued in 1887. A decisive turnaround of fortunes happened in 1892 when it was decided to hold Steeplechase and Hunt meetings. In 1893 the racecourse uniquely encircled (1) St.
Galleywood Grapevine
Michael and All Angels Church (built in 1873 and 277 feet above sea-level, this is the only church in the country built in the middle of a racecourse); (2) a Brickworks originating in the 1800s; (3) a Corn Windmill mentioned about 1777 and in use until the 1920s; (4) a major part of the Galleywood Golf Links of the Chelmsford Golf Club – the first Golf Club in the Chelmsford area (1893-1912); and (5) the remains of the Napoleonic Defences built in 1803. Over the next twenty years the Grandstand was wired for telegraphic address, and horse drawn vehicles gave way to the motorcar. In 1914 there was a car parking charge of 10 shillings at the races. During WW1 the Army took over the Grandstand and the Common was used as a training ground and 25-pounder guns dug in as a defence against zeppelins. The great days of horseracing seemed to be over in 1922 when the Galleywood Racecourse was put up for sale by auction. There was a feeling of euphoria when the highly popular horseracing was revived by the Chelmsford Racecourse Company p
17
Galleywood Racecourse, continued p in 1923. The old Grandstand had been renovated, giving 1,200 spectators an excellent view of the course. A new brick built Members’ Grandstand capable of accommodating 700 people was constructed facing the racecourse and artistically fenced off. It was a right hand course, two miles round over open heath land, crossing the Margaretting Road and the Stock Road twice with a 12ft. water jump near Byron House and 11 fences 4ft.7ins. high.
The Essex Chronicle in 1928 said that ‘the Galleywood Racecourse, as befits the Racecourse of the County Town, was the best situated and most attractive in the whole of England’. Just purchased by the eccentric millionairess, the Hon. Dorothy Paget, GOLDEN MILLER the most famous horse that ever ran on the Galleywood Racecourse, won two races over 2 miles by 10 lengths each in October and November 1931. In 1932 GOLDEN MILLER won the Cheltenham Gold Cup and went on to win it five consecutive times and also won the Grand National in record time in 1934. Although race meetings were successful they were inevitably run at a loss as it was only possible to charge admission to the Grandstand area. Sadly, the race meeting
on 29 April 1935 was to be the last. The final event was the ‘Maldon Steeplechase’ with 12 runners, the largest field of the day. It was a successful meeting, with fine weather, the course in excellent condition and some exciting finishes. The large crowd of spectators on the surrounding common land enjoyed a good view of the races free of charge. National economic conditions at the time also contributed to the financial difficulties. Pony-racing then took over on 20 May 1935 and ended in 1939. The Galleywood Racecourse was put up for sale by auction at the Corn Exchange in Chelmsford on 31 March 1939. Subsequently in 1942 it was disclosed that the Chelmsford Rural District Council (now Chelmsford City Council) had purchased the land and property of the Racecourse and the 116 acres of Galleywood Common. The large sections of the old Racecourse with its white posts and rails and the new Galleywood Heritage Centre (formerly the Members’ Grandstand) will always remind us of Galleywood Racecourse’s glorious past. Making plants a priority The new National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS), launching in spring 2015, will for the first time enable scientists to take an annual stock take of the UK’s wild plants and their habitats, but to do this we need the public’s help. We are looking for 200 volunteers to carry out surveys of wildflowers and their habitats that will provide robust evidence of which widespread plants are increasing or declining, as well as indicating the changing state of our most valued habitats such as grassland, fenland and even road verges. This new monitoring scheme will help us understand more about how the countryside is changing. How does the NPMS work? • Volunteers will be able to choose from three options depending on their level of expertise: recording from a short or an extended list of target species in each habitat or recording all species they find in their plots. • Volunteers will be given a 1 km square with a grid showing up to 25 locations. Surveyors will be asked to visit three of those locations and carry out surveys in square plots and then identify two linear features such as hedgerows, rivers and road verges and survey these locations too. • The squares have been randomly chosen, but with a focus on squares containing habitats of interest. For more information on the NPMS and how to take part please visit www.npms.org.uk

Shakespeare comes to St This term, the focus of our work has been The Tempest by William Shakespeare. We believe that the right time to learn Shakespeare is when children are fearless, when they are used to trying out new language, which is very young children’s daily existence. New words are not a problem, much in the same way as children learn a foreign language; often children are bilingual by the age of three if parents are speaking to them in two languages. Shakespeare 4 Kids, a company who use improvised drama to bring Shakespeare text to life, came to school to work with each class from Year 3 to Year 6. With the children playing the parts, these highly skilled actors guide them through the play so that it evolves piece by piece, engaging the children with key moments of drama. Many of our children have become totally absorbed in this project on The Tempest, and children are discussing the play across all ages of the school. To see children who are normally quite reserved in class suddenly come to life in the part of Prospero was a revelation. Everyone was utterly engrossed in the drama and often challenging children were gripped by the wonderful storyline. Shakespeare was written to be performed, and giving the children the chance to be part of a performance was very exciting and engaging. Sometimes just reading Shakespeare can be a little baffling for children, but seeing their

classmates acting out a story in character, delivering the play with passion and engagement under the skilled direction of the professional actors, transports the children to another world! The children have produced some beautiful writing based on The Tempest, and below is a poem depicting a storm, written by two boys in Years 5 and 6.

Michael’s School Psychopath Why must you inflict terror into our caring veins? Carelessly causing havoc and terror in our cherished kingdom, Engulfing many cities with malevolent power, Forks of light rain down, Searching for their next morsels. The devil of the sky. Why do you have to unleash clouds of the Devil? Causing terrible strife that devours the land and sea. Your exasperation has left detritus and destruction. Take my soul and free theirs, Detritus causer, family ripper, city burner! Vehement people squirmed around, Dying people with no hope or family, Stop this rumpus at once, you’ve taken the lives of many. Why must you continue to tantrum? The evil within!
Blizzard O mighty storm, why do you taunt us? Your scorching minions have struck the earth’s face Leaving detritus for miles around. And your blizzard like breath flings us mortals around like helpless rag dolls. You have split families in two with one swipe of your mighty hand! You are the Satan’s son and our mortal enemies with peace. You have scarred us for life and thought us morsels. You could use your great power for good And be immortal friend. But you lead an inhumane and monstrous life with one mission, To destroy Earth and everyone on it.

Galleywood Short Mat Bowls Club Recently our club held a Bowlathon We invited other local clubs to join us on this all day charity event. We played in point scoring games to find an overall winner. We raised ÂŁ654 which was divided between Essex Air Ambulance and Farleigh Hospice. The very first Bowlathon we held was in 1994 and in total to date we have raised ÂŁ10,636 for various charities. In January 24 of our members travelled to March in Cambridgeshire for a friendly match. Our hosts not only gave us some exciting games but provided us with a cooked meal and buffet tea. In all a very good day out. We have gained a few new club members, but we would welcome more. It is friendly and informal. If you like the idea of joining us, just come along to the Keene Hall on a Wednesday afternoon or to Barnard Rd Infants School on a Monday evening.
