Old school reunion The old school reunion was held on Tuesday 11 August. Around 85 people enjoyed the afternoon and had a great time exploring the archives of the Old School and meeting up with old friends. The place buzzed with conversations and chat. The event planned to end at 3.30 pm eventually finished at 4.30 pm ! A wonderful afternoon! Old pupils came from far afield-Ipswich, Norfolk, Kent and Somerset, as well as all over Essex it was clearly a very popular event and one that hopefully will be repeated in 2017. Wendy Cummin

I will start by telling you a bit about myself, my name is Kevin Taylor and I moved to Galleywood in November 2013 from Hertfordshire and only discovered Galleywood Common this year, and was not disappointed. I am a member of the Butterfly Conservation and at the time of writing this article (6 August 2015), I have now found up to 20 different species on the Common – Peacock, Orange Tip, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Green Veined White, Small White, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood, Painted Lady, Small Copper, Large White, Holly Blue, Meadow Brown, Large Skipper, Common Blue, Ringlet, Gatekeeper, Small Skipper, Essex Skipper and Purple Hairstreak. I am hoping to add a few more next year. The Purple Hairstreak is difficult to spot as it usually seen around the top of oak trees, I have been lucky to find these on six different parts of Galleywood Common. If you would like to join the Butterfly Conservation or find out more about what is happening in Essex and even visit the sightings page go to www.butterfly-conversation.org or call 0333 2592645 Kevin Taylor 07480 956768 email kevrt59@gmail.com

Ted Hawkins In celebration of his life 8 August 1925 – 16 August 2015 Ted was born on 8 August 1925 in Forest Gate, the third of four children. At school, he enjoyed most sport and represented his school at boxing, so he was never bullied! When war broke out he was evacuated with his younger sister, first to Martlesham in Suffolk and then to Abberley in Worcestershire. At 16, he returned to London and worked as a junior audit clerk for a firm of Chartered Accountants, and was also involved in fire-watching armed with a stirrup pump. As a founder member of West Ham Sea Cadets, it was natural that he went on to serve in the Royal Navy. After initial training he opted to train in wireless telegraphy. He served in this capacity from 1944 on SS Britannic and HMS Exmoor, mainly engaged in convoy duties to and from Italy, North Africa and Malta. On VE Day in 1945, his ship was in dry dock being prepared for the probable destination of the Far East. The bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved him from this experience. At Christmas 1945, Ted’s whole family were all together for the first time in 7 years; they all survived. Ted finished his navy career on HMS Virago, before being demobbed. Ted then joined the M&G Investment group in the City as a junior accounts clerk, and following further studies he eventually became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administration in 1969. He went on to become Director of subsidiary companies until retiring from M&G in 1980 aged 55. Feeling too young to fully retire, Ted held
several other temporary placements with other companies. One of these placements enabled Ted and his wife Barbara to visit Canada. Ted had met Barbara at a Young Conservatives dance in 1950 and they married in 1952 in Goodmayes. Their son Peter was born in 1954 and son Alan in 1956 in Forest Gate, West Ham, ensuring that they are both loyal West Ham fans. The family finally moved to Galleywood in 1979, and Ted instantly fell in love with the village, and of course the historic racecourse. Finally fully retired in 1985, Ted became involved in local politics and voluntary work. In 1986, he became Associate Member for the Centre of Policy Studies in London, founded by Margaret Thatcher and Sir Keith Joseph. His list of voluntary connections are too numerous to name! Ted became a Parish Councillor in 1987 for the newly-established Galleywood Parish, serving with the council until 2003. He was Vice-Chairman for 4 years and Chairman for 7 years. He was also a Trustee of the Keene Hall for 16 years, 9 years as Chairman, and he was a governor of Galleywood Infants’ School. He also co-wrote the updated version of “Glimpses of Galleywood”. Ted and Barbara were invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in 2005 to represent Chelmsford District parish councils.

He was a founder member of Galleywood Historical Society in 1998, serving as programme director ever since then, and finishing as President of the association. He gave several talks on local history, especially the racecourse which remained his passion and he carried out a vast amount of research on this, all generously shared with the Heritage Centre. He visited the Heritage Centre regularly and gave help whenever he could, and was involved from the beginning in the campaign for our War Memorial. He was also a member of Galleywood Horticultural Society. Their sons organised celebrations for their Golden and Diamond anniversaries and also a surprise 80th birthday for Ted on HMS Belfast.
More recently, Ted was a special guest at Chelmsford City Racecourse in March 2015. The occasion was a commemoration of the incredible feat by jockey Len Lefebve who rode 3 winners at Galleywood Racecourse in 1924. The event was organised by Len’s sons, with a race named after their father. Ted, in his research, had come across this information, and had been in touch with the sons. They invited him to join them for the occasion, which of course he did, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ted was not only a valued member of the Galleywood community, he was an avid researcher till the very end and a real expert on the racecourse, but most of all he was a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed by a great many people. Ted leaves a wife Barbara, sons Peter and Alan and four grandchildren.

Chelmsford’s Best Front Garden announced This year’s winners were awarded tickets and vouchers to RHS Hyde Hall in Chelmsford, an engraved planter, a vase, two gardening books and a large collection of seeds. The Council would like to congratulate all entrants on their fantastic front gardens.
The Council was assisted by the Royal Horticultural Society to judge all of the entries and would like to announce that the winner of the competition is Richard Thirkettle from Millfields in Danbury. The winning garden features drought tolerant perennials and grasses which provides food for bees and birds almost all year round. This garden requires no watering and minimal weeding.
Cabinet Member for Waste Management and Recycling, Councillor Janette Potter said, “I’ve been very impressed by the high standards of the gardens in this year’s competition. Not only do these front gardens look beautiful and help create an attractive community, but they are also helping to support a number of our wildlife and protecting our environment. I’m looking forward to next year’s Best Kept Front Garden Competition.”
Alan Dyson from South View Road in Danbury was awarded second place. This garden has long lived perennial plants which are drought resistant and sun loving for bees and butterflies. Third place was Lorraine Robinson from Brook Lane in Galleywood. This garden welcomes birds, bees and butterflies, most features in this garden have been upcycled. An old bike, teacups and old watering cans are home to many flowers. On a visit to this Front Garden we were greeted with many items which have been re-used to create a home for wildlife and flowers. Since the competition Lorraine has rehomed a windmill which is now a main feature in her garden which someone else was going to throw away. Lorraine’s garden is a fantastic example of reusing instead of discarding old items. Lorraine Robinson said: ‘I entered the competition because I wanted to show that anyone can have a nice garden. You don’t have to be a gardener and you don’t have to spend lots of money, you just have to have fun doing it. My children and I have loved spending time together, being outside and learning about our environment.’
The winning gardens and ideas and tips for your own gardens can be found at www.chelmsford. gov.uk/frontgardencompetition.

Harvest Festival focus on Leprosy Mission St Michael’s Church Galleywood, and St Michael’s School Galleywood, have been supporting The Leprosy Mission since the 1920s, and the church sends a proportion of its income every year, year after year! The Leprosy Mission is the world’s leading anti-leprosy charity, supporting 2000 staff fighting Leprosy in 20 countries. Every £30 we raise will pay for food for a patient in a Leprosy Hospital for one month. So why not come to our harvest festival service at 10am on Sunday October 4 at the church, and bring money in something interesting! If you work in a pub, you could bring money in a tankard; if you like tea, you could bring money in a tea-pot; if you ride horses, you could bring money in a hard hat. The school choir will be singing to us, and we’ll be thanking God for the harvest and thinking about what we need. Then you could join us for lunch, also in the church; over lunch there’ll be games, a chance to discover more about leprosy, and some presentations. We’ll be charging you £7.50 for lunch, with is extortionate - but that money will feed a hospitalized Leprosy patient for a week! For more information, see www.leprosymission.org Rev Andy Griffiths

St Michael’s Church “BIG” Project St Michael’s Church on the Common has had many developments, additions and re orderings over its 140 year history. About 5 years ago, when the Churches at the School and the Common merged, ideas were considered about enhancing the facilities at St Michael’s, i.e. More rooms, and plans were then drawn up for a BIG Project. This turned into a three phase plan and the first phase came to its active stage in the Late Summer / Autumn of 2014. This phase of the plan, put simply, involved the removal of the organ console and pipes from the north east corner - to be re-sited elsewhere; the pipes in the west tower and the console on the south east corner. The work in the north corner of the church is now completed and the photos show how the space has been improved - How it used to look and images of the two new rooms, stairs and disabled toilet. The work to re-site the organ pipes has not yet been completed, but a gallery has been constructed for the pipes’ new home and the West Tower room (underneath) has been increased in size to make it a more flexible usable space. More of this, with photos, next time. Brian R Pepper Parish Administrator

Cooking with Pauline Pauline Horemans has taken this recipe from a well-known Corned Beef recipe brochure which she sent off for around 40 years ago – maybe some of you remember it ? Sadly the recipe has no connection to California, perhaps the editor at the time thought it sounded more exotic! Pauline makes this quite often and hopes you enjoy it.

New benches for school Volunteers from TEG, The Environmental Group, worked over 3 days to construct and install a circle of benches in the forest area at Galleywood Infant School and St Michael’s Church of England Junior School. The children love the new benches, which are made from new oak railway sleepers and are much more comfortable than the logs! Children from the infant school enjoy Forest Schools sessions each week as part of their curriculum. The circle is always the start and end point for every Forest Schools session, where children plan their activities and later share and reflect on things they have discovered. The focal point of the
circle is a “Storytelling Chair”, which members of TEG cut and shaped from a felled tree at Parklands Farm. Both schools are very grateful to the TEG volunteers for their time and expertise on this project, and for extensive maintenance work carried out earlier in the year on the willow dome, willow tunnel and wildlife area. Out thanks too to Mrs Willett for providing the tree trunk, and for transporting the very heavy seat it to its new location in the school “forest” to be enjoyed by children for many years to come! GHS Summer Show fantastic success The Galleywood Horticultural Society Annual Summer Show took place on Saturday 11 July 2015 at Keene Hall. The weather was sunny and hot, and this encouraged a high turnout of visitors to the show. Classes covered vegetables, fruit, flowers, flower arrangements, cookery and crafts with sections for children up to 5 years old, and up to 11 years old. Each year there is a novelty competition for members to grow the most potatoes by weight from a potato given to them in February by Peter Seabrook, the Society’s President. Peggy Andrews won the novelty competition with 3 lbs 12 oz in potatoes. The overall Show winner was Helen Pennock, who was given the Cramphorn Tropy. Carole Wheeler-James was second and Jenny Clarke was in third place. During the prize giving, Peter Seabrook commended the pupils, staff and volunteers (some volunteers are Society members) at both St Michael’s Junior
School and Galleywood Infant School for the high standard of their entries. Both Schools entered the Community Group section, the photographs show their entries for the Class ‘a collection of vegetables’. The best exhibit in this section was won by Galleywood Infant School. In the Children’s sections, the best exhibit was won by Laura M. for five years old and younger, and by Elizabeth Ebden for 6 to 11 years old. The photograph shows an entry to the class ‘a decorated child’s wellington boot.’ I would also like to thank everyone at the Rainbow Pre-School for their contribution again this year. The photograph shows the entries to the class entitled ‘a sculpture made from a vegetable and/or a fruit.’ Overall the show was deemed a success and an enjoyable day was had by members and visitors. We were all very sorry to see the beautiful Willow Tree at Pipers Tye being felled on Tuesday 4 August 2015. Unfortunately there was a deep cut to the heartwood which meant that one of the large boughs could have fallen in high winds. Three separate contractors advised that the Willow Tree be removed. We notified Essex County Council of the issue on 31 July 2015 and they immediately conducted a survey and instructed their contractors to remove the main body of the tree. The trunk has now been cut down to ground level. Photographs here taken by Cllr Bob Harman and John Cummin show the tree surgeons at work.

Galleywood Open Gardens raised some useful money for Farleigh Hospice at the same time”. Essex villages participating in the Open Gardens event is growing each year so why not consider taking part in 2016 ? Not only are there beautiful back gardens in Galleywood but also many attractive front gardens that visitors will enjoy viewing. You can simply open your front gate to the village and welcome visitors to your garden, or if you are really ambitious have a go at serving refreshments and selling plants like Alan and Shirley! Capturing Galleywood’s History Can you help? Were you living in Galleywood during the 1920s to the early 1970s? Did you move to Galleywood as the village was starting to develop? Are you willing to share your memories? For some months now a number of us have been looking into putting together an oral history of Galleywood from before the Second World War until the village became the place it is today. We have been speaking to the Galleywood Historical Society, the Heritage Centre, and the Essex Record Office (which maintains the Essex Sound Archive) about how this might be done.
Although a final decision to go ahead has not yet been taken, we would like to start the process of finding people who are willing to contribute as volunteers to help run the project or who would be willing to record their memories of life in Galleywood to share with others. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a unique project in the village. If you are interested in helping, please contact Graham Smith (Vice Chairman of the Galleywood Historical Society) 28 Russell Gardens, Chelmsford, CM2 8DB – telephone 01245 358570 or email grahamsmith99@hotmail.com

On Sunday 5 July 2015 Galleywood parishioners opened their gardens in aid of Farleigh Hospice. Alan and Shirley Thomas write “The day started damp, but cleared very soon and we had over 180 visitors on what turned out to be a lovely summer’s afternoon garden party. We sold over 250 plants, made up from some 50 different species, or varieties, The same plants all featured somewhere in our garden, so we challenged some people to try to find them all in our garden. Most of those sold had been raised as cuttings, or divisions from the garden plants and were sold at low prices. With the money going to Farleigh Hospice everybody was benefiting. A thoroughly enjoyable day, with lots of very friendly visitors and we

Men of Galleywood remembered
This edition’s Hints and tips looks at things from a slightly different angle. It looks at some recent findings from the Office of National Statistics. • Young people were the least likely to regularly stop and talk to their neighbours: Less than half (45%) of those aged 18 to 24 regularly stopped and talked to their neighbours, compared to around 8 in 10 (83%) people aged 65 to 74 (2011 to 2012). • People aged 75 and over were the least likely to have at least one close friend; 11% of them reported having no close friend at all, compared to 2% of those aged 18 to 24 (2011 to 2012). • Around 1 in 4 women (24%) and 1 in 5 men (19%) aged 75 and over reported caring for someone sick, disabled or elderly within their household (2012 to 2013). • Middle aged people (aged 45 to 54) were the most likely to feel lonely of all age groups (15% in 2011 to 2012) and the least likely to socialise, with nearly half (49%) reporting meeting socially with family, friends or colleagues less than once a week (2012 to 2013).
Wendy Cummin and Cllr Mrs Janette Potter
Do you have some hints and tips to share? Send them to Ken Edwards, 2 Vale End, Galleywood, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 8NZ. kenedwards2012@btinternet.com
Earlier in the year Chelmsford City Councillors were asked if they would like to put names forward of residents in their Ward who died in World War 1 for the purpose of Street Naming on the new Beaulieu Development - Councillor Janette Potter together with Wendy Cummin put forward all the names and full details of the men of Galleywood who gave up their lives in World War 1 - a total of 17 names. Both Janette and Wendy were pleased to hear from Chelmsford City Council that all 17 names had been accepted for street naming at the Beaulieu Development. It is a lovely reminder of those men of Galleywood who gave up lives to protect us during World War 1 – At the going down of the sun and in the morning - We will remember them.
To be continued in the next edition…
John Cummin
Some readers will find these unsurprising, others may find them thought provoking. I think one conclusion we can all draw is that there are plenty of opportunities for each of us in our own way can make a contribution to Galleywood being a good neighbourly village.

Galleywood Street Names There are over 70 named streets and roads in the village ranging from Archers Way to Willow Bank. Occasionally through my involvement with Galleywood Historical Society I get asked how a particular road got its name – Deadman’s Lane is a particular favourite and as far as I am aware no one has yet come forward with any evidence although many have speculated. Just which dead person? So what I have decided to do is collect together the information we do have as over time those with long memories of the village will sadly no longer be around to tell us. Even when things are obvious (Keene Way is named after the Keene Family but is the whole family or one particular member?) it is s useful to collect what people know. So any response will be gratefully received. So what I am asking readers to do is to send me any knowledge and information
they have about why their street or road or any other in Galleywood got its name – its as simple as that. If they have any evidence to back this up that would be even more helpful. I will be lodging the results with the Heritage Centre and it may well lead to an article or two in future Grapevines. Let’s see what we can find out and if anyone does know exactly why its called Deadman’s Lane… Ken Edwards Kenedwards2012@btinternet.com
