Dear Parishioners, Breathe. It’s nearly Christmas. Jesus once put it like this (in one version of the Bible): “Learn from me the unforced rhythms of grace”. And twice in the Christmas story we hear that Mary “pondered these things in her heart”.

Because at the heart of all the bustle, stars and angels still themselves and stare to see God come near. “Sleep in heavenly peace”, we sing to Jesus in “Silent night”. “Rest in a bit of that peace yourself,” he might reply, “make space to wonder at the Good News, and don’t forget breathe!” A very happy Christmas to everyone Canon Andy Griffiths, Vicar of Galleywood

Galleywood Grapevine

This year, our theme at St Michael’s Church has been the threefold rhythm of discipleship – breathing in God’s unconditional love for us, and breathing out love for others; breathing in God’s Word, the Bible, and passing on its message to others; breathing in healthy relationships and contributing what we can to our church family. Let’s not lose that tranquil rhythm of grace when we go Christmas shopping.

Down the rabbit hole at Galleywood Library Thank you to Anik from Galleywood 2nd Reading Group for entertaining an enthralled audience with Alice in Wonderland story. A splendid afternoon with lots of fun things to make & colour. We had five new customers join the library. 01245 259042 galleywood.library@essex.gov.uk www.essex.gov.uk/libraries

The St Michael’s Building Project is now successfully completed

Galleywood Grapevine

Report by Brian Pepper Now that the organ has been fully installed (see photo) and the lighting has been significantly improved we extend an open invitation to come and see what we have achieved in the last 14 months.

• The Organ Pipes have now been reassembled on a purpose built balcony at the west end of the church, above the Martin room and in front of the bell ringing chamber.

• It was August 2014 that the organ pipes were removed from the North-East corner of the church.

• New flooring has been laid in each of the three rooms, ringing chamber and the back of church, with a vinyl floor in the (north) lower room

• The builders moved in during September and the Church was off limits except for weekends until Easter 2015. • Two NEW rooms were created in the North Transcept (where the organ pipes were), an upper room and a lower room • One room (at the West end of the church) was enlarged. This is now called ‘The Martin Room’ – honouring the work done by Derek Martin as project manager.

• New lighting has been fitted which is more effective and more efficient. • Minor alterations have been made to the Vestry – wardrobes and filing cabinets – to accommodate the choir and make the space more usable. Also there are new items in the kitchen, improving the storage availability.

Inform Galleywood

Galleywood Grapevine

Offering help and support to the local community on debt, benefits and other money related issues . The challenge of dealing with debt, benefits and other money-related issues affects many people. So it is not surprising that in a recent survey lots of people in Galleywood said that this was something where the local church could offer help. As a result a new project called ‘Inform Galleywood’ is being started by St Michael’s Church with support from Citizens Advice. The project will work with local groups to help our community help itself, so that people can work through the difficulties they face. With access to benefits being cut back even more people could be looking for support in budgeting and dealing with their finances. While it won’t be offering advice – that’s too difficult for a small organisation – Inform Galleywood will be able to help people find out what advice they might

need, and where to get it. Based at St Michael’s those seeking help will be given space to find information that they need, with support available from volunteers if wanted. St Michaels will be open at set times - on Tuesday evenings (6:30pm to 9.30pm), Thursday afternoons (2pm to 5pm) and Saturday mornings (9am to 12pm) - for the sole use of Inform Galleywood. People can also contact the Inform Galleywood team, which has a dozen volunteers, to set up a time to talk about sorting out their financial problems. Family Funeral Service

A tradition of excellence since 1957

St John’s House 91 Wood Street Chelmsford, CM2 8BH

Prompted by a suggestion from one of our families, children at Galleywood Infant School have joined children across the UK giving new or “pre-loved” teddies to children in refugee camps. Project Paddington was started by a group of mums in Sheffield moved by news coverage of Syrian children, who had left everything behind as they fled a war zone. Firmly attached to each bear is a label, Paddington style, with a message for the new owner: “This is Furry Bear. I hope you will love him. From Chloe age 7”. “This is your bear to cuddle at night”. Some children drew pictures of themselves, others wrote a simple message. Families were asked to sponsor the bears, raising money to pay for transport, and a little towards food and clothing for refugee children. The families of Galleywood generously donated 55 bears and over £500.

Galleywood Youth Club

Report by Debbie Bartholomew, Youth and Community Based Commissioner

Essex County Council support the project by providing a staff member and Chelmsford’s star volunteer, who supports the club and young people every week without fail. We have lots of fun evenings. Recently our programme has included a Sushi night and a Halloween party. Young people enjoyed a Cultural evening on the 15 October. Young people took part in sushi making; using varied ingredients. This gave young people the opportunity to try different varieties of food. It was a fun night, and young people learned new skills, including how to prepare ingredients for sushi and putting it together. This was a totally new experience. Young people had increased confidence in their cooking skills and learnt how to prepare something healthy to eat.

Young people decided to have a Halloween party. It was an amazing night. Everyone made the effort to dress up, and we decorated the coffee bar area using spider webs, pictures balloons etc. We had food which was decided by young people the week before and was funded by Galleywood Parish Council. We had pumpkin carving going on throughout the evening, and young people made their own entertainment through playing the drums. One young female showed her peers how to play. Thank you to The Parish Council for their continued support in the funding of the club, and partnership working with Essex County Council Youth Service.

Photographic Competition Please note that the winning photograph will be announced in the Winter edition of the Galleywood Grapevine Community Magazine.

Galleywood Grapevine

Galleywood Parish Council work well in partnership with Essex County Council Youth Service to open up the youth club for a social evening on a Thursday for young people in the local community, which helps to build their confidence and improve their social skills.

Poetry Evening with Rosie Sandler As the Autumn descends upon us, we were entertained at Galleywood Library by Rosie Sandler as part of the Essex Poetry Festival. We have been privileged to have been selected for the second year to be the venue for an event. Our hosts for the evening were The Borrowers book club. Rosie lives near Maldon but originates “from up north” near Manchester. Her poems have been published in many publications The poetry of Sex, Lighthouse journal, & So Too the Doves Have Gone. Rosie entertained us with a selection of her poems inspired by her family and life events. A very popular poem was one about the content of her Handbag - any woman will agree with the myriad of “stuff” we keep just in case it’s needed. Rosie has a very vivid imagination and her poems are rich with descriptive words and phrases. It was lovely to see so many of our local community supporting this event.

Festive Mincemeat & Pear Jalousie Serves 8 First preheat oven gas mk 6, 400ºF, 200ºC, 180ºC fan Grease a square baking tray

INGREDIENTS • 1 x 375g fresh ready-made puff pastry (ready-rolled or in a block) • ¾ jar of mincemeat • A drained tin of pears • 9 glace cherries, washed • Beaten egg for brushing 1 dessert spoon granulated sugar • A little plain flour for rolling pastry

Cooking with Pauline Pauline Horemans shares this festive recipe and says she makes it often with a fruit filling or pie filling but thought this festive version would go down well for the Christmas season.

METHOD 1. Roll the pastry on a surface dusted with flour. Roll it so it measures 45 x 30 cm. Cut into 2 long rectangles which measure 45 x 15 cm. Take one rectangular of pastry, roll it a little thinner and bigger, fold in half lengthways and with a sharp knife cut diagonally 5cm into the fold at 2.5cm intervals. 2. Place the second piece of pastry on the baking tray, put the mincemeat evenly on the pastry leaving a 2.5 cm border which you brush with water. Arrange pear halves down the centre and put a glace cherry under each pear and arrange the others at the side of the pears. 3. Unfold the remaining pastry and place over the filling and using your thumbs press the edges all around to seal the pastry. Trim the pastry to 1 cm around the filling and crimp the edges. Brush with the egg and sprinkle the sugar over the top. Cook for 30 - 35 minutes. Sprinkle with icing sugar when ready to serve.

The Midwinter Waltz

23

The time passes quickly, with each passing day and I think of you now, alone in Keene Way. You’re here in my heart, and you’re here in my mind so I’ll leave these fair Highlands and Islands behind. I’ll be home for Christmas, with a love that is true and I’ll dance the Midwinter Waltz, love, with you.

Galleywood Grapevine

The oncoming headlights are shining so bright as I drive ever southwards in the cold dead of night. The thistle is drooping by the motorway café where the nameless travellers all go on their way. The coffee tastes bitter, I should linger no more, so my footsteps quicken as I make for the door. I glance to the heavens, to the circus of stars I’m back on the road now, with the coaches and cars. In my mind’s eye I see you, by the Christmas tree tall there are logs in the hearth, and a lamp in the hall. They said it might snow on Christmas Day morn so I must keep driving by the cold light of dawn. Now the road signs say Galleywood, my heart sings a song for this is our time, love, and where we belong. The air smells sweeter, no more will I roam for my roots are set here, yes, and this is my home. So I’m home now for Christmas, with a love that is true and I’ll dance the Midwinter Waltz, love, with you.

So just what can you and I do to be a good neighbour?

• Do take time out during the holiday break to call or visit those who you see less often. Make a point particularly of phoning anyone who may spend much of the year without seeing you or possibly other members of the family. No don’t put it off – contact them. • If you have a big family who stay in contact by electronics consider putting together a past year’s diary with any big events – even things that might have happened on holiday. • Now is the time to carry forward any anniversaries and birthdays in the diary – put something in beforehand so you have time to send any cards or messages.

welcome or value a call from you. Do any of your close neighbours never seem to have visitors or go out much – why not hand deliver a Christmas card? If you are the social sort why not invite them in for a drink one evening between Xmas and New Year when things tend to be quieter. • Lastly as we reach 2016 it’s the time for New Year resolutions. Try to include one about being a better/even better neighbour in some way – be specific and keep it. Do you have some hints and tips to share? Send them to Ken Edwards, 2 Vale End, Galleywood, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 8NZ. kenedwards2012@btinternet.com To be continued in the next edition…

Galleywood links to The Gambia Children and families from Galleywood Infant School have been linked with schools in The Gambia for more than 3 years. Following her retirement as Deputy Headteacher, Sue Read and her husband Steve visited the Gambia in March 2015. Using shelving donated by an Oxford college and hundreds of books donated by Galleywood families, Sue worked with the charity Empower to set up a library in a rural village on the outskirts of Bansang. Children are very keen to read books in English, which they are taught to speak, read and write in school. Money collected in Galleywood at our Christmas presentation has funded the work of a local carpenter to build shelving, and the appointment of a part-time librarian for this community. Four boxes of trainers donated by families have been shipped

for distribution in the new year. Sue will be in school in early November, sharing recent photos and asking children to donate books and stationery to help fill a container destined first for the West African coast, and then many miles inland to Kerewan.

Galleywood WI Galleywood WI is always proud to serve the refreshments provided by GPC to the parishioners of Galleywood following the service of remembrance at the memorial at Keene Hall. The photo shows Beryl with Sue King, Betty Gibson, and Elaine Law, a happy group of members gathered together to make Christmas decorations instructed by Beryl Metcalfe. This provided the opportunity for members to show their skills and in some cases a lot of laughter at their attempts, agreed by all a super fun day. Galleywood WI has a full and varied programme for the rest of this year culminating with Christmas tea and entertainment. Why not make it a New Year resolution to give WI a visit; we meet on the second Thursday in each month at Keene Hall, Watchouse Road, Galleywood, you will be made very welcome, there will be a guest fee of ÂŁ4 which includes tea/coffee.

Making Christmas Decorations L-R Elaine Law, Audry Batteye, Betty Gibson, Beryl Metcalfe and Sue King Next year, we will be enjoying soup tasting, pancake tossing, and on 24 March 2016, a special occasion event for our charity of the year, Farleigh Hospice, keep a look out for our notices. May I take this opportunity to wish all Parishioners, WI members, and my hard working Committee a Very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Val Villa President
