Galleywood Youth Centre currently has its doors open Monday - Friday for young people participating on the Alternative Education Programme through Essex Youth Service. Since the programme began in September, the young people have been making great progress and developing holistically through a range of youth work sessions, educational lessons and through participating in a recent off site residential. The young people accessing the Alternative Education Programme attended Essex Outdoors Bradwell Centre during October for a 3 day residential. During this time the group participated in a number of team building activities including canoeing, orienteering and climbing. The young people worked extremely hard to develop teamwork and formed not only positive relationship with peers and staff but also demonstrated newly found independent living skills. Within the centre, young people are undertaking their City and Guilds Level
1 Employability Award where they are gaining skills ahead of leaving education and finding employment. In addition to this, young people are also participating in work experience in and around the area to enhance their abilities and gain understanding of a workplace environment. Work experience placements include work at supermarkets, gyms, kennels and a childcare nursery. As part of their award, the young people will be planning and taking part in a community social action project in 2016. The young people have gathered some ideas but would really appreciate any suggestions of where the young people could help out in the local community. Any ideas from the local community will be welcome! So if you have some painting, clearing or odd jobs that need doing then please email your suggestions to joanne.terry@essex.gov.uk Many Thanks Jo Terry Team Leader, Alternative Education

Congratulations to Canon Andy Griffiths I believe 2015 saw the 10th anniversary of your appointment as Vicar of Galleywood. Have you seen many changes over that time? Absolutely. For example, in 2005 there were three churches in Galleywood – the Methodist Church on Well Lane, the Church of England at the Church on the Common and another Church of England congregation meeting at the Junior School. Now, there’s just St Michael’s Church, and we’ve spent almost £300 000 on the building to make it useful and beautiful. When I came I was one of two full-time vicars for Galleywood alone. Now, I’m one of three vicars covering five churches in Galleywood, Moulsham and Widford, and on a Sunday morning I’m only in Galleywood 50% of the time. But there are now more ministers, not fewer: there’s a whole team that has grown, including a Parish Evangelist, two Licensed Lay Ministers, a Youthworker, a Children’s Worker, an Administrator, two Authorised Preachers, a big team of people (including two employees) assisting those with financial issues at Inform Galleywood, a Curate (trainee Vicar), and from the summer there’ll be a Pastoral Assistant, too. People used to think the Vicar ran everything – now they know I don’t! Has what you believe changed in those ten years? No, no it hasn’t, because everything I believe is summed up in Jesus. Jesus who brings God close to us, Jesus who welcomes us, Jesus who died for us, Jesus who rose from the dead for us, Jesus who’s there for us, Jesus who declares that every place is special. Including Galleywood. You must have been involved in a lot of Galleywood lives. Yes – I reckon it’s about 500 funerals, 200 baptisms, 200 weddings. It’s amazing the way people allow me access to
their homes and lives at those special moments. I’ve had the privilege of being a governor at the Junior School and chairing Galleywood Voluntary Community Care for over a decade. I reckon I’m a local now! At my very first service as Vicar I said I planned to lose most of my hair here, and it’s happening. My daughter started Infant School in Galleywood, and she’ll still be living here when she does her GCSEs! You’re an Area Dean, and you’ve now become a Canon. What does that mean? Well, an Area Dean is just a middle manager in the Church of England. Last year, it was decided to give Area Deans the title “Canon” – it’s just a word that can be used before my name, like “Mr”, so you can call me “Canon Griffiths”. There’s also a special Canon’s scarf which I sometimes wear for worship. But to be honest, I’d rather you called me Andy, and I’d rather be dressed in something casual.

New Year’s Day Walk 2016
Galleywood Grapevine
On New Years Day 40 walkers gathered at Galleywood Heritage Centre for the annual New Year’s Day walk. After mulled wine they walked 5 miles to Great Baddow and back via some of the quieter roads and footpaths. On return to the Centre, warming soup and hot rolls were enjoyed in the tea room. The next walk will be on Monday 2 May 2016.

About our Club We hold charity and other events throughout the year, including a Bowlathon in January. Over the last 10 years we have raised over £10,000 for various charities. We play social matches against other clubs, either home or away and these games are great fun with the competition, also followed by a meal. And you don’t have to be an expert bowler to join in. If you do not drive, we can usually help with transport. Our club has social activities other than bowls, including quiz nights. In 2015 we had a trip on a barge from Maldon, visited the Air Ambulance at Earls Colne and went up the Thames to London from Gravesend. SO - COME ALONG - MAKE 2016 THE YEAR YOU TAKE UP A FRIENDLY, FUN ACTIVITY - WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU.

10 Hampers of Hope – delivered The simple idea, Hampers of Hope, was the brainwave of one of our local residents, my wife, Marie Hyland. And with a little help from family, friends, local businesses - especially the Co-op on Barnard Road in Galleywood and once again the massive generosity of the people of Galleywood there were 10 households, families and individuals who each received a Hamper as a gift from the residents of Galleywood. The Hampers of Hope gifts, once again, had a memorable impact they were

made up of donations including tins of non-perishables and brought a spark of community spirit to Christmas 2015. We thought it would be nice to share with you, some of the responses we got “the gift and the thought that someone somehow cares in such a way helped a lot… thank you to everyone who helped ‘make my day’ ”…another said “without this gift we would have had nothing… especially grateful to live somewhere like Galleywood.” Richard Hyland

Galleywood Parish Council held a public meeting at the Galleywood Heritage Centre on Saturday 9 January 2016. A presentation was given by Councillors and a copy of the Summary document is available from the Galleywood Parish Council Office. A second public meeting will be held prior to the next consultation round in the Summer. If you have any issues you would like to discuss, please feel free to call the Parish Clerk; attend a Planning & Highways Committee Meeting, or speak with a Councillor informally at the Galleywood Parish Council Surgery being held at the Galleywood Library on the last Saturday morning of the month (10-12 noon).
Val Villa MBE Such a wonderful way to start 2016, having the honour of being awarded a MBE by the Queen in her New Year’s Honours list. It was complete surprise, and I am so very grateful to those who contributed to my nomination. Over the many years of fund raising and contributing to the community, I have enjoyed meeting so many people who give their time to help others; personally it has enhanced my own life. I await eagerly to hear when I will receive the award, but in the meantime I will be celebrating with family and friends.

Galleywood Parish Council Surgery Galleywood Library are supporting the monthly Surgery on the last Saturday of each month from 10 am – 12 noon. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your Galleywood Parish Councillor and discuss local issues. No need to make an appointment, just turn up ! Next quarter dates: Saturdays 30 January, 27 February and 30 April.
Our exhibition needs you! In the November exhibition “Remember 1916” there will be a small item on conscription which was introduced in 1916. Does anyone know of a relative who was conscripted into war service from 1916 onwards in WW1? If so, where did they live, what occupation were they taken from, what happened to them in the war and after [if they survived]? If they survived, did they get their job back? What family hardships if any did this cause? Any photos will be a bonus! If you can help, please contact Wendy Cummin at wendy.gf@blueyonder.co.uk.

The John Lewis Christmas TV advert of the lonely man on the moon certainly got people thinking. Many of us will have older family or friends and in the busy working world we cannot get to see them as often as we would like. So here is some advice from experts on how to help and also encourage self help:
• Look into opportunities in the local area - There are plenty of opportunities in many areas to join others in keeping active. The local leisure centre may have bowls groups or gentle exercise classes and older people may be eligible for lowcost membership. (For locals - See It’s Time to Chat in this issue.)
• Make the effort to visit regularly -Try to visit elderly relatives or neighbours regularly - it’s all about human contact. You may not be able to visit very often, but when you can, make sure you make the most of it by going out, making lunch or taking a walk.
• Encourage them to get out of the house - If you can’t do this once a week, some councils run walking programmes in that aren’t too arduous so check online to see what is available in the area
• Call for five or ten minutes in the day - If you can’t visit in person get into a regular habit of making a five or tenminute phone call every day. Try to do this at a regular time, so it’s something they can look forward to in the routine of their day. • Encourage them to get online - A recent report from Age UK found that over a quarter of people aged 65+ who admitted to feeling lonely said that keeping in contact with family and friends via the web helped relieve feelings of isolation. • Teach someone to play games online - If they feel happy online why not introduce them to online gaming or lend them a tablet to play games which need two or more people.
• Reconnect with a local library - Libraries are a good source of knowledge about local activities so make sure you check notice-boards or buy a local paper to find out about local charities and befriending groups. • Consider a low maintenance pet - If someone enjoys the company of animals, then keeping a pet has been shown to have all sorts of mental, emotional and physical health benefits. • Get in touch with a befriending scheme - National and local befriending schemes are springing up as part of the drive to reduce loneliness. They might be able to provide a visitor in person, or even a phone call service to people living on their own. See www.silverline.org.uk for example.

Prayer For 2016 Let us pray for health, happiness and contentment at the beginning of this new year. Let us pray for endless summer days, strolling through green meadows with our loved ones, and for warm autumn nights of wine, laughter and reflection. Let us pray we see the murmuration of starlings as the waves crash on the shingle by the sea. Let us pray for crisp winter mornings, for stepping on ice-covered puddles that crunch underfoot as our breath hangs in the air. Let us pray for the humble hedgehog for the sparrows, skylarks, bees and butterflies, and all the other rapidly declining species. Let us pray for streets free of flood waters. Let us pray for streets free of violence, drunkenness and litter. Let us pray someone makes us laugh as much as Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom and Morecambe and Wise. Let us pray we hear songs as breathtaking as In My Life by the Beatles, The Streets of London by Ralph McTell, and Casta Diva by Maria Callas. Let us pray that England win Euro 2016 ! Above all, let us pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and everywhere else on this beautiful blue planet of ours. Amen.
