At the May Annual Council Meeting, I was greatly honoured to be voted in as Chairman of the Council, along with Cllr John Turkentine as Vice Chairman. Reluctantly, we received resignations from Bob Villa, Janette Potter and David Stevenson and on behalf of Councillors, and Staff, I am sure you will join me in wishing them all the very best of health and happiness for the future. (Please see article on page 6.) See page 19 for election details. As a very new Chairman, I am keen to find out about the concerns that you, the residents of Galleywood, have about our village. I would be delighted if you would email or write to Jane Head, (details on page 28). I hope that you enjoy reading this issue of Grapevine, which features winning photographs from our annual Pride in Our Village and Poetry competitions (page 20/21); photographs of the successful Galleywood Festival (page 38); and extract from Canon Andy Griffiths’ new book (page 15). Looking further ahead, we have a Summer of activities, including Galleywood Open Gardens on Sunday 3 July, Play in the Park Tennis Coaching on Thursdays 4 and 18 August plus lots of club social events. At the May Annual Council Meeting, Cllr Bob Villa took the Chair for the last time and handed over the Chairmanship to Cllr Neville Paul. The meeting was particularly poignant as Cllr Bob Villa tendered his resignation along with Cllr Mrs Janette Potter (Vice Chairman) and Cllr David Stevenson. The long standing Councillors have amassed some 60 years service between them. David was elected in 1987, Janette in 1991 and Bob in 2007, all three have been past Chairmen of the Council and dedicated considerable time to the Parish Council. Bob will continue in his role as City Councillor for Great Baddow West and Trustee of the Galleywood Heritage Centre and if you have any concerns at City level, Janette and David are continuing as City Councillors for Galleywood Ward and their contact details are on page 28 of this issue. Retirement from Galleywood Parish Council will allow all three more time to dedicate to their hobbies and personal pursuits. All Councillors and Staff wish them well.

No art experience is necessary as we can offer you guidance in the club as well as offering regular guest demonstrators in a variety of media, throughout the year. We have members using a variety of media, from watercolours to oils, acrylics, pastels, inks, silkscreen and pencil work. Paper can be purchased for watercolours at a reduced cost at the club. We allow members to work on their own projects if they prefer, but equally, we provide a monthly themed inspirational title to aim for if you run short of ideas. At the end of each month we hold an in-house showing of our efforts. We hold our annual exhibition in Keene Hall in November. In 2016, the Art and Craft Fair is held on Saturday 12 November, where members can sell their original framed works. Refreshments are available at the club at the Fair and each Tuesday session. Please come and join us, we are a welcoming bunch. Come and see if you like the experience, just turn up on a Tuesday to see if we are “your thing”! Annual membership: £35 Associate membership: £12

I wrote a book It’s a very short book, called Galleywood Rhythms. There are 31 sections, so every day for a month you could take one section. There’s a Bible reading for each section, and then an extract from Galleywood’s history. So for example you can read part of the first sermon ever preached at St Michael’s Church; or hear about the St Michael’s Vicar who had a national campaign against Christmas Trees; or discover the role of Galleywood Church when the Boat People from Vietnam came to the village. And then, in each section, there’s a breathprayer. A breath-prayer is a simple three-line prayer, like Come Holy Spirit, or Grace in Generosity out No fuss. You (silently) pray the first line as you breathe in, the second line as you breathe out, and the third line as you pause for a moment between breaths. God’s love My love Jesus. You keep praying your breath-prayer until you are at peace and ready to be still – just you being you in the presence of God being God, not asking him things or trying to work things out, just being. When you lose concentration – and you will! – gently bring your attention back to your breath-prayer again and have another go at being still. It will change your life. And you’ll find the words coming back to you over the course of the day at the most interesting moments! And after the breath-prayer there’s a suggestion of how to pray – maybe a written-down prayer, maybe a street in Galleywood you could bring
to God. One of the things St Michael’s members do every day – well, most days anyway, nobody’s perfect – is to read the Bible and let God speak to us, so hopefully my little book – Galleywood Rhythms – will be of some use. If you haven’t got your copy yet, come to church some time and pick one up – but don’t just read it – let it help you pray. Everyday Ordinary Glory. Andy Griffiths, Vicar Galleywood Grapevine

Galleywood Youth Club visit the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs
and whether or not there is enough support out there, and if not what can be done to ensure that the mental health of young people is being taken seriously.
Report by Kim Kounnas, Young Carers Lead Youth Worker, Galleywood Youth Club
For two of the young people attending, they had previously been on a YMCA training day around mental health first aid, so they had a good understanding of mental health to be able to contribute to the event.
We were very lucky to be able to take three of our young people from Galleywood Youth Club to the House of Commons on 26 April 2016, to be a part of the All Party Parliamentary Group discussion which was taking place. The most amazing part was that it the room was full of young people, as the event was targeted to the youth. The meeting was about mental health for young people
We then finished off the day by taking a trip to Nando’s before returning back to Chelmsford. The young people involved, all commented on how amazing the day was, and how they would love to have other opportunities in the future to revisit the House of Commons for other events.

th Annual Parish Open Forum Galleywood Poetry Competition for Adults The judges enjoyed reading all the entries and the Chairman was delighted to announce that Frances Maynard was the winner. The Chairman presented Frances with a Certificate and gift token. The winning poem is set out below:
MY GALLEYWOOD GARDEN The local poetry competition I thought I’d try So, requested the information to apply Kindly provided to me by e-mail All I needed was there, in fine detail. Oh no! I knew at the very first glance At winning the prize, I hadn’t a chance “My Galleywood Garden” was the theme And I live in a flat, so end of the dream Having no garden is not as bad as it sounds We are provided with communal grounds I see them when out of my window I look And I can sit there in the sun, to read a book I know I should be grateful for what I’ve got Sadly, it’s not the same as having you own plot Planting out, nurturing, oh! the joy as it blooms But, that’s impossible when confined to two rooms I grow my own herbs, parsley, rosemary and thyme Without getting backache or covered in grime My indoor plants, they flourish and thrive Watered and fed daily to keep them alive “Borrow a neighbours’ garden” was suggested This idea I pondered and digested Thought long and hard, I have time on my hands Living alone, there aren’t too many demands. Many, like me, would love a garden to enjoy and savour So, maybe those with, could do us oldies a favour To show we’re not forgotten and about us you care You’ll invite us along, your Galleywood garden to share!
The Big Friendly Read 16 July – 3 September in Galleywood Library Children will have a scrummdiddlyumptious time when they join The Big Friendly Read, sharing books of their choice and collecting Roald Dahl character cards and earn a medal and certificate. www.essex.gov.uk/libraries Galleywood Grapevine

Refreshments will be on sale in the tea room, there will be a craft stall, a free car park and toilets facilities available as well. Between 1pm and 1.30pm the St Michaels Co E Junior School choir will be performing at the Centre so a lovely accompaniment to lunch! St Michaels and All Angels Church will also be open and serving refreshments between 2pm and 5:30pm. It is a Victorian Church set on the common and well worth a visit. Refreshments and plants will be available for purchase in several of the gardens. At Farthings, just a short walk from the Galleywood Heritage Centre, there will be some great children friendly activities on offer too. In all gardens, you will find owners keen to discuss their gardens, explain the work they’ve done and perhaps even offer advice about gardening in general. Programmes can be bought for £4.00 (under 16’s go free) from various places including the Farleigh Hospice shop in Watchouse Road, Top Ten Hairstyles on The Street (Tuesday-Friday); St Michael’s Church and the Parish Council Office (9am-1pm Monday to Friday), Abercorn Garden Centre and Lathcoats Farm Shop. Or on the day, they can be bought from the Galleywood Heritage Centre. If you’d like more information please call 01245 457352 or email Debbie.de.boltz@farleighhospice.org.

Pauline Horemans says this dessert is delicious and can be served with either ice cream, crème fraiche or whipped cream.
Cooking with Pauline
Caramelised Apples Dessert Ingredients 100g unsalted butter 4 eating apples, quartered, peeled and cored 50g castor sugar 3 tbsp whisky (you could use calvados or brandy) Serves 4
Method 1 Melt the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat. 2 Roll the apple quarters in the sugar to coat them, add to pan and sprinkle any remaining sugar over them. 3 Fry for 12 - 15 minutes, turning them after about 7 minutes when golden on the underside. Give them a stir after another 5 minutes until they are nicely golden and sticky all over. The sugar on the bottom of the pan should have turned a deep caramel gold. 4 Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the apples to plates. 5 Tip out all but about 1 tbsp of the cooking liquid and carefully add the whisky so you don’t get splashed, 1 tbsp at a time - it will sizzle to begin with. 6 Return the pan to a gentle heat and stir until you have a golden sauce, scraping up the sugar on the bottom of the pan. Pour this over the apples and serve with either ice cream, creme fraiche or whipped cream.

Time to Chat? The tea and coffee pots are hot, the biscuits are at ready – all we need is YOU! Local voluntary group, Galleywood Good Neighbours, would like to invite members of the community to join them and other local people at their monthly ‘Time to Chat’ meetings, held on the second Friday of each month at the Keene Hall in Galleywood. Held with the support of Galleywood Parish Council, these informal drop in events are held between 10am and 12pm, and are a great opportunity for local people to pop in for a friendly chat over a cuppa. From new young mums or single parents, through the recently retired to those with even longer memories, this is a truly inclusive event and a chance to enjoy some conversation and company in your local village. Despite the
advent of social media, recent research shows more people than ever are lonely and this is a great grass roots initiative to allow people to socialise and benefit from the enrichment of different company in their local community. So whether you are a home worker looking to escape from the glare of the screen to the glow of a friendly face, a new parent seeking some ‘grown up’ company or a recent retiree, you will be made to feel welcome and valued. The next dates for ‘Time to Chat’ are 8th July, 12th August & 9th September 2016. Transport to and from the meeting may also be available for those with mobility issues. Galleywood Good Neighbours Group was set up in 2015 for the general encouragement and promoting of good neighbourly behaviour. Inform Galleywood Help with information, guidance and support Do you need any help with debts? Benefits? Other money worries? For those of you who may not have seen our previous articles, Inform Galleywood is a group of people from St Michael’s Church who have gathered together to help members of our community who might be struggling in a time increasingly filled with forms, computers, and complex rules. All our help is free. Although we come from a church we are ready to help anybody in our community. We can find information and offer guidance as to what can be done, and how it can be done. We do not make choices for people, we find options. We cannot offer advice in the legal sense, but we can signpost people to resources that will help them. We use computers to find the information we give you and we confirm to you where the information came from. If you don’t have use of a computer yourself, or access to one, we can set aside time to sit with you and do the things you need . If your problem is an emergency, or too complicated for anyone but experts to handle, we can find people who will still be able to help you.
If you receive advice and find it difficult and daunting we will set aside time to help you fill in forms, write letters or use the computer. We have “drop in” sessions at these places: • One Five Five (155 Robin Way, Tile Kiln) Thursday afternoon - from 14:00 to 16:00., with thanks to our friends at Tile Kiln Chapel. • Galleywood Library - Saturday Morning - from 10:00 to 12:00. We are grateful to the Library Service. At other times we can be contacted on 07729 694485 (leave a message and we will get back to you), email to inform.galleywood@gmail. com, or look at our Facebook page www. facebook.com/informgalleywood. We can help with: • Debt • Benefits • Budgeting • Housing • Other Issues. If you are worried about anything, and would like to talk about it, but have “never got around to it” then please call us. The sooner you find help, the better you will feel.
