A Bright Future for Herne Bay Pier Herne Bay once boasted the second longest pier in the UK, second to Southend Pier by only a few metres. Like most good stories, and this one reaches back nearly 200 years, there have been villains in its chequered history – storms, fire, ice and a small but determined little nautical worm, the teredo navalis. However, the story of the pier continues to unfold in 2015. As a much loved part of this seaside town’s heritage, it really matters to the local people of Herne Bay to reinstate their pier to its former status as a focal point of the seafront. The level of local support was clearly evident when thousands of people voted successfully for their pier in the People’s Millions BIG lottery funding on ITV Meridian in November 2014.

The regeneration of the pier started in 2008, when the present owner of the pier, Canterbury City Council, set up a registered charity, Herne Bay Pier Trust. The Trust, was formed to take on the mammoth task of bringing the pier to life for the benefit of the community and it has recently been described by the Piers Society as one of the most pier trusts active in the country. All volunteers, the handful of trustees and their army of supporters and members are working hard to bring employment, start-up businesses, entertainment and fun back onto the pier and possibly to rebuild the long pier. In 1804, Herne Bay in was described as a tiny village beside the sea with only a few dozen surly inhabitants. However, with the army camp on the Downs, militia training for the Napoleonic Wars, Herne Bay began to grow. A group of enterprising businessmen in 1832, saw the potential of developing the natural route from London to Canterbury and on towards the Dover packet ferries to Europe via Herne Bay by boat. Until 1832, passengers had precariously disembarked from the London - Margate ferries into smaller boats which were able to come to shore at the Ship Inn across the shallow waters of Herne Bay. Hence the first wooden pier, three quarters of a mile long, was built and passengers and their luggage were transported to land on an ingenious sail trolley, called Neptune’s Car.

Fascinating records remain of the tolls charged by the shipping company for passage of horses, pianos and even corpses. This shipping route to Herne Bay Pier cut the journey time by road by 2 hours However, despite the best efforts by Captain Gardner, one of the first Pier Masters, who tried to repair the pier with copper nails and patches, below the waterline the marine worms were munching their way through the wooden structure. Then the arrival of the railways to Herne Bay in 1861 hit the shipping companies very hard. The boats stopped coming and the pier was demolished in 1871.

The trains brought Victorian seaside pleasures to Kent and the Bathing machines which had appeared in Margate also arrived in Herne Bay. Seaside entertainers, donkeys, and Punch and Judy and all the traditional seaside jollities brought the town to life. A second shorter pier was built in 1873. This time the pier was built of iron, strong and decorative with a bandstand at the end.. With the growing popularity of the town, ten years later, the pier was extended – a pavilion theatre was added with shops and ferries began returning. In the Edwardian era and well beyond, Herne Bay flourished as a popular seaside town. A sad remnant of those its heyday, the café at the end of the pier, still remains forlorn and dilapidated a mile out at sea. The strong Victorian structure withstood the assault of weather and stormy seas until WWII when, for defence reasons, two wide sections of the pier were dismantled to prevent the Germans invading via the pier. Although this now sounds to us like a Dad’s Army plot, no doubt in 1940’s it seemed a wise precaution. After the war, the gaps were bridged with inferior wooden sections which fell foul to storms in 1950’s, damaged by the ice when the sea froze in 1953 and so the long pier was demolished in 1978. Spurred on by its first year’s success and the town’s support, the Trust is using the £50,000

It is also building a toilet block for diners, a large sit-in café and a stage on the large platform which it is leasing for 20 years for £20,000 a year from CCC. The Trust has had to learn to run a fulltime business to pay for the two leases and the additional 17 huts it is opening in 2015 on the platform. The permanent acquisition of the helterskelter has become an iconic shape on the skyline and the children’s activity area now includes a new boating pool and bouncy castle. During the future summer months, the Trust plans to make the pier available for entertainers, musicians and dance troupes to create programmes of entertainment, music and markets. It is early days as the charity only signs the lease in 2015 but things are happening remarkably quickly on Herne Bay Pier.

One of the deep-seated ambitions of the local people is to see the long pier rebuilt. This was estimated as a £40 million project. However, with the EU directive that by 2020 that a third of our electrical power has to come from renewable sources, the Pier Trust is investigating the possibility that an energy company might create a lagoon in the bay, with turbines under a newly built pier walkway to generate energy from the tides. A similar project is happening at Swansea and recent news items suggest there will be many more such schemes to follow to harness power from the tides. With the Thanet Way solar farm, the wind farm out at sea and a turbine pier, Herne Bay could put itself on the map as the greenest town in the SE. Solar panels on the roof of

Should I save or invest? If you’re not sure whether you should save or invest, the answer is probably both. It all depends on your goals and your financial situation. This guide covers the basics to help you plan out your finances for short term savings and long term investment. What’s the difference between saving and investing? n Saving is putting money aside bit by bit, to make a lump sum. You usually save for a particular goal, like having the money for a holiday, a deposit on a house, or any emergencies that might crop up. Often saving is taken to mean putting your money into cash products, like bank and building society deposit accounts, and that’s how we define saving in this guide. n Investing is taking some of your money and with the aim of making it grow, by buying things that might increase in value, like stocks, property or shares in a fund. Who should save? Everybody ought to have a certain amount of cash savings to hand. The rule of thumb is to have three months’ essential outgoings (things like rent and food) in an instant

access savings account. This is called an emergency fund. The only time you shouldn’t save or invest is if there are other, more important things you need to do with your money. This includes: n getting your debts under control n making sure your family could cope financially if you died Decide whether to save or pay off debts. Do you need life insurance? Once you have your emergency fund, you should keep on saving. A good goal is to be putting aside at least 10% of your earnings each month (or as you can afford it if your earnings are variable). Aim for 5% to begin with and build it up. You can save up for anything you want, for example to pay for a wedding or to have enough money to invest in something specific. It’s important to set savings goals so you know what you’re aiming for – more on how to do this later

Are you ready to invest? As with savings, you need to know your goals to decide if you should invest. Specifically, you need to know which of your goals are shortterm, and which are long-term. n short-term goals are things you plan to do within the next five years n medium-term goals are things you plan to do within the next 5-10 years n longer-term goals are ones where you’re won’t need the money for ten years or more For your short-term goals, the rule is to save into cash deposits. The stock market may go up or down in the short term and if you invest for less than five years you might well make a loss. For longer-term goals, it’s often best to invest because inflation can seriously affect the value of cash savings over the medium and long term. The stock market tends to do better than cash over time. The longer you can leave your money, the more chance you have of making a profit. For the medium term, cash deposits may sometimes be the best answer, Magazine when responding to advertisements

but it depends on how much inflation risk you are willing to take, and whether you need a certain sum on a certain date. You can adjust the level of risks you take when you invest by spreading your money across different types of investments – called diversifying the risks. If you’re approaching or over 30, you should have at least one long-term goal – retirement. Money you put aside for retirement should usually go into investments. Most people invest in a pension, but other investments can be suitable too. Read our guide Diversifying – the smart way to save and invest Set your savings goals As you can see, you probably have quite a few financial goals. They’ll all have different timescales, which means you want to do a bit of saving and a bit of investing. That’s why it’s important to make a plan. If your finances are fairly simple, take a look at this guide to see how to set your goals:

The King’s Hall The King’s Hall is an architectural gem, captivating visitors with its original Edwardian features and idyllic seafront views. There had been earlier buildings in this natural hollow in the Down which, during the Napoleonic wars, had been a military camp and gun site; there was a tiny bandstand and small hall. This building, called the East Cliff Pavilion, was extended still further by excavating into the cliff. It grew into a concert hall for orchestras and military bands and so the King’s Hall was born. The opening of the King’s Hall on 9 July 1913 was a rare occasion for Herne Bay, a day when the town had a royal visitor, Princess Henry of Battenberg, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, came on behalf of Queen Alexandra to name the proud new concert hall the King Edward VII Memorial Hall after her late brother. With its name shortened to the King’s Hall, the building has been the centre of much of the town’s social life for over a century.

The pretty Edwardian bandstand on the stepped and sloping roof became a large arena for military band concerts. Deckchairs even packed on to the wrought iron veranda overlooking the sea. Between the wars, Herne Bay became one of the first seaside resorts in the south of England with military bands playing daily to huge audiences. Other groups such as the Jolity Boys entertained on the Downs where hotel guests, in evening dress, strolled after dinner. Still an oasis of entertainment, relax and enjoy regular shows and events; tribute bands, cabaret evening, ladies nights, or even hold your wedding day at this special and unique coastal venue. World famous pilot died off the shores of wartime Herne Bay Jane Priston, Amy Johnson Herne Bay Project British record-breaking aviatrix Amy Johnson followed her dreams. Walking away from a steady job as a typist, she achieved fame and adoration breaking multiple aviation records before losing her life serving her country off the shores of Herne Bay. Born in 1903, Amy grew up in Hull. A tomboy with an obsession for sport, her restless character set her apart from the crowd and this complex and passionate woman was not afraid to push the boundaries to achieve her goals. In 1929, against the odds, Amy obtained her pilot’s licence and in the same year became the first qualified female ground engineer in Britain; at one time the only one in the world. With an adventurous spirit and fierce determination to prove herself, Amy decided to make an attempt on the record for a solo flight from England to Australia. On paper she did not possess either the skill or experience needed for such a journey. The furthest she had flown was London to Hull. Ignoring concerns for her ability to survive the trip and with no money or plane, she pressed ahead and worked tirelessly to turn her dream into a reality. On 5 May 1930, Amy took off from Croydon Airport in a second-hand Gipsy Moth biplane she called Jason. With no radio and only basic maps, the next 19 days pushed Amy to the very limits of her physical and mental capabilities. Flying for on average 10 hours a day in all weathers, sometimes over uncharted land and shark infested seas, Jason finally touched down in Darwin on Empire Day. Amy Johnson became the first 16

woman to fly solo from England to Australia and the world fell in love with her. During the 1930s Amy struggled to balance the celebrity lifestyle that funded her dangerous career with a desire for privacy and love. She succeeded in breaking more aviation records but failed to keep the man she adored, Jim Mollison, divorcing in 1938. When the war came Amy volunteered for the Air Transport Auxiliary, ferrying RAF planes from factories to airfields around the country. On 5 January 1941, despite being advised not to fly due to appalling weather conditions, Amy took off on a routine ferrying flight to deliver an Airspeed Oxford to Oxfordshire. Nearly four hours later a convoy of ships in the Thames Estuary saw a plane come through the clouds, hitting the water under some degree of control. The witness statements contradict each other on the details of what happened next. We know that a pilot was seen in the water and one of the vessels set full steam ahead to attempt a rescue. With a heavy swell and snow falling the conditions were atrocious. Magazine when responding to advertisements

www.communityad.co.uk

Herne Bay

The vessel ran aground on a sandbank and the crew worked frantically to free it and reach the pilot who was by now within five feet of the ship’s side. Pleading “Hurry, please hurry” they realised it was a woman. The swell of the sea dealt the final blow as the vessel came crashing down on the pilot and she disappeared. Some witnesses believed they could see a second body and the ship’s Captain, Lieutenant Commander Walter Fletcher, dived in and swam out to the object. After resting on it for a few minutes, he began to swim back. A motor launch reached him but he was unconscious and later died. After recovering from a Luftwaffe attack, the destroyer at the back of the convoy sent a boat to look for survivors. Two bags were recovered, the contents of which included Amy Johnson’s log book and Christmas presents from her sister. Some plywood was picked up by a drifter and later identified as part of the wing of the Airspeed Oxford Amy was flying. On 8 January a section of a tail fin, believed to have been from Amy’s plane, washed ashore at Shoeburyness. Both the salvaged wing and tail fin disappeared. The RAF Accident Record Card for Amy Johnson’s crash states, “T/O Prestwick-Herne Bay H.M.S Hazelmere saw parachute, couldn’t get to survivor due to bad sea Captain dived into sea but was drowned”.

Kent Libraries abolish reservation fees Using Kent Libraries to borrow books, CDs and DVDs will get even better from April when the reservation fee is removed. Customers are currently charged a 35p fee if they order and reserve any item stocked within the county, but that service will be provided free of charge from 1 April. Cabinet Member for Community Services Mike Hill said: “I am very pleased that we will be able to offer free reservations within the county for all customers. “The abolition of the fee will not only save people money but will remove a barrier to a world of knowledge and entertainment that is open to everyone in Kent.” The free reservation service is another way in which Kent Libraries are looking to help save customers’ money. Last year it rolled out a courtesy email service for customers reminding them to return or renew borrowed items before incurring overdue fines. Any reservations set before 1 April 2015 will be chargeable and some charges will still apply for requested items not held in KCC’s stock.

Delayed Divorce Battle Makes History It makes an interesting story. New Age Travellers Kathleen Wyatt and Dale Vince meet, get married in 1981 and have a baby boy. Dale moves out a year later. In 1992 several years after the split Kathleen divorces Dale. Because they had little or no assets at the time of separation, no “financial order” is made as part of the divorce. Kathleen takes custody of their son and raises him on her own, taking jobs fruit picking, but living largely on benefits. Her current home, described as damp and badly heated, is a former council house in Monmouth, south Wales. In stark contrast Dale’s story post divorce is one of rags to riches. It all begins at the Glastonbury Festival when he rigs up an old pylon into a wind-powered telephone. This paves the way to the founding of Ecotricity in 1995 which is now Britain’s leading green energy supplier. Green energy tycoon Dale,

awarded an OBE in 2004, is currently worth an estimated £107million. In 2011, almost twenty years after their divorce, Kathleen decides to take legal action against her wealthy ex-husband. She believes she is entitled to a £1.9m payout. Dale argues that his ex wife has lodged the claim to late. However in March, five Supreme Court Justices unanimously rule that Kathleen’s case should proceed. What it means for other couples This is a landmark decision and a wake up call to all divorcing couples to make sure that they have a separate financial order in place to prevent any further claims. As Family Law specialist, Sarah Finnis, who is based at Girlings Solicitors’ Herne Bay office explains: “With there currently being no time limit during which a financial claim has to be made this leaves the door open for an

ex-spouse to make a financial claim at some future point. The way to protect against this is to ensure a separate financial order is obtained dismissing or restricting those claims. This is a straightforward procedure but many couples are against it because of the additional cost, a false economy given the longer term implications.” As a result of the ruling, divorces will have to be undertaken much more carefully in future, especially when the splitting couples are young and have potentially lucrative careers ahead of them. It will be more important than ever to seek good legal advice from a qualified family lawyer.

we go the extra tile

It’s important to point out that the Supreme Court ruling doesn’t mean Kathleen Wyatt will be successful in her action. However, lawyers are concerned that the ruling could spark a rush of financial claims from ex-spouses, even when the divorce took place decades ago.

Followed by the eagerly awaited fireworks display from Neptune’s Arm. Herne Bay in Bloom will bring the festival to a wonderful, community filled close on Sunday 30th August with the annual Giant Picnic. There will be so much happening throughout the week, keep an eye out for the schedule of events online or pick up your programme in July/August. What’s been happening so far? This year we have formed a steering group made up local people in Herne Bay who have had key involvement in the festival over the years, whether it was running their own event, performing or helping the festival team. We had our first meeting on Tuesday 20th Jan and it was very positive. I am really pleased with the people who accepted my invite, it’s a great group. Herne Bay Festival is in good hands! As a local professional entertainer & singer I know how important it is to give people a great mix of events so that there is something for everyone. in the bay for a number of years now so I am delighted to be part of the steering committee and working with Continental Drifts. With local input the 2015 festival promises to be bigger and better and one to remember. Martin Farbrother, steering group member The People’s Festival Alex Mahoney, Production Manager, Continental Drifts says: We are really trying to make it the people’s festival this year, by getting the people of Herne Bay involved in decision making. It was our Facebook and Twitter followers who voted on this year’s festival’s theme, the shortlist was: Wish You Were Here, Herne Bay Through the Ages and Victorian, which was decided by our steering group using suggestions from the same followers. We will ask our friends and followers to help us with more decisions along the way! So if anyone wants to join the conversation they can follow on twitter @HerneBayFest or like us on facebook by searching Herne Bay Festival.

Herne bay and its cultural scene The cultural scene in Herne Bay is expanding. People visiting the town will be amazed at the community involvement . In June, the newly named Seaside Museum will be handed over by Canterbury City Council to the community supported by a new group of Trustees…the recently renovated iconic Clock Tower (the first free-standing Clock Tower in the world) is now fully operational thanks to a lot of fund-raising within the community and nowdisplays some wonderfully changing coloured lights ….and our Pier group will have many exciting projects coming up including an increase in the Beach Hut village. The town is alive with many Creatives and the community arts centre – Beach Creative has been described as the Cultural Hub of the town , as amongst the 14 inhouse artists within the building, they also

have 2 beautiful galleries with constantly changing exhibitions, plus various workshops happening throughout the year including a new Beach Garden to be constructed around the building Beach House, and funded by Kew Garden’s “Grow Wild” scheme. There is also Herne Bay’s first independent gallery, Bay Art Gallery (often called The BAG) now going into its 16th year, aimed at providing emerging artists an opportunity to experience exhibiting in a professional gallery at very little cost. The Kings Hall foyer gallery also hosts changing exhibitions and the latest addition to the cultural scene is the New Street Gallery exhibiting works from many contemporary artists. The Coastal Parks bid for lottery funding allowed local artists to design and build 6 individual benches along our coastline from Hampton to Reculver. Herne Bay also hosted in 2013 a major arts festival celebrating the life of the French Artist Marcel Duchamp who lived in the town in 1913, and in 2014 Herne Bay was also the first town in the UK to celebrate the International Radio Drama Festival where writers from 15 different countries entered into a competition to raise awareness of the joy of listening to radio drama. Another first was the Children’s Literature Festival launched from Bundle of Books in March. For those who are interested in Sci Fi – our Bay Promo team will again be bringing the much celebrated Sci Fi by the Seaside event in June where people all over the country will be converging to see some of their favourite Sci Fi celebreties.. Our Bay Promo team have a wonderful event in store too with their Air Show in August.
