Lions Competitions Peace Poster winner, Ruby Watson, The Community College, Whitstable
May Day prize winners , Yvonne Ling, Olivia Boxall and Ava Atwooll from Whistable Endowed Junior School
Each year Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club organises competitions for local children and young people. The Peace Poster contest was created to showcase the importance of world peace to young people everywhere and approximately 400,000 students worldwide, aged 11-13 enter each year. Amongst them were students from the Community College Whitstable, who have now won awards for two consecutive years. Ruby Watson is this year’s south east regional prize winner and her work, together with that of the other students, formed part of a special exhibition at the Beach Creative Gallery in Herne Bay. The previous year, April Cavalier was the UK winner of the competition and was a guest of the Lions at the Palace of Westminster on United Nations Day, when she was presented

with her prize by the International President, Barry Palmer. Lions sponsor the Peace Poster competition and attend UN Day each year as Melvin Jones, founder of the Lions, and two other members, helped to draft the outline constitution of the international organisation known today as the United Nations . Lions International is the only service organization to be affiliated to the U.N. There is also an essay competition for any visually impaired students. For details of this and the Peace Poster, call Alwyn, 01227 792032 Younger children, aged 8, 9 and 10 can enter the Poster for Peace Competition, and the Lions were delighted to sponsor children from Herne Bay Primary and Herne C of E Junior School in the spring term. May Day provides another opportunity for young artists from local primary schools

to design posters promoting May Day at Whitstable Castle. This year saw a record number of entries from Whitstable Endowed C of E Junior School, Joy Lane Primary School and the Endowed School. Prizes were awarded to three students from each school and children at Joy Lane welcomed Ryan, the Lion’s mascot, to their prize giving assembly. The three finalists, all friends and the same age, came from the Endowed School and attended May Day to collect their awards. Each year the Lions strive to encourage talented young musicians by sponsoring participants in a European Music Contest where prizes are awarded at 3 different stages; £100, 3,500 euros and $10,000. Participants must be between 14 and 22 years of age on January 1st 2016, and have been living in the British Isles for at least three years. This year we are looking for a classical violinist, grade 8. For more information and an entry form, please contact Alan Saunders, Music Officer, 01227 638718.

Hot tips for cool pets With this wonderful spell of hot weather there has been a lot of advice about dogs left in cars. Most dog owners are aware of the risks and take due care, but there are other factors that are easily forgotten. Lately it has been too hot to walk dogs during the day. Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs and Staffordshire Bull Terriers tend to overheat very easily, as do dogs with thick coats. A good rule to remember is: ‘If in doubt, don’t go out!’ It is important to know your own dog’s habits. My Boxer runs around and plays all day, so we have to limit him and make him stop when the weather is hot. Remember that a dog’s natural cooling system is panting, so humid days can be even more dangerous. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water that stays in the shade. Give them the choice to move to different places if they want to and have a fan to circulate the air and if necessary cold wet towels to cool them down. For hairy breeds, don’t be afraid to cut the Our services include: Bereavement support
heavy coat short - it will grow back! If you have the space, dogs love a paddling pool! Cats are normally experts at finding the best places to be, so make sure they have plenty of choices and aren’t confined to a hot room like a conservatory. Don’t forget your small pets in hutches and cages too. They can’t get away if the sun falls on their home so ensure they are in the shade, check the water supply regularly and make sure they have fresh air. Enjoy the weather, but don’t let it become a danger to your pets. If you are in any doubt, ring your vet straight away. Sarah Platt MrCVS, Broadway Veterinary Group

Greenhill Gymnastics Club Greenhill gymnastics Club was founded by Jean & Les Willis at Briary school as a small family run club in 1983. The popularity of the sport grew with an increasing number of children taking part. To accommodate the larger group the club moved to Herne Bay High School. The club is entirely run by volunteers giving up their spare time (after their full time jobs) to coach the children for up to 12 hours a week over four days of training. At the start of each training session the equipment needs to be assembled and dismantled when the session is completed. The club holds recreational gymnastics with the addition of competitive Artistic gymnastics classes. The competitive classes comprise 2 piece (floor and vault) and 4 piece (floor, vault, asymmetric bars and the balance beam) Artistic competitive gymnastics as seen on the TV in the Olympics. Our gymnasts are of County, Regional and National level with some children getting selected annually to represent Kent in the county squad. The coaching team are all qualified to British Gymnastics senior levels, along with County, Regional and National judges to help guide the gymnasts in competitions all over the UK. ED

It’s all about Gabrielle! Curator at the King’s Hall Gallery Gabrielle Davis, author, retired journalist for Woman’s Realm, former Canterbury City Councillor and Sheriff of Canterbury from 2009-2010, has seen much take place at The King’s Hall, Herne Bay. She remembers attending a St Patrick’s Night ball there at the age of sixteen. During the evening she won the spotlight competition - at the end of the dance the spotlight was shining on her, her prize a bottle of whiskey. Gabrielle was living and working in London when, on a visit to Herne Bay, she discovered that the seafront cottage, where she had spent her early months, was for sale. For years it became her weekend home, before moving back permanently, when she joined Theatrecraft, appearing in the
chorus in their King’s Hall musicals and, later, became a founder member of the Herne Bay Improvement and Conservation Trust – meetings of a core eight members are now held around her dining-room table. The Trust’s first move was to commission an artist to illustrate a series of history boards for the town’s seafront before turning attention to the King’s Hall - a magnificent Edwardian building in dire need of attention. Gabrielle thought the entrance looked particularly

drab, so it was decided to concentrate efforts on improving the foyer, which in the years 1903-13 had stood alone as the East Cliff Pavilion. With the help of another member, Doreen Stone, The Trust applied for £50,000 People’s Millions lottery funding – and, to everyone’s great delight, won. It was then decided that the foyer should become a gallery, where artists from across the area could show their work. An exhibition wall was built to separate the café from the toilet entrances; crumbling plaster replaced, the whole space painted sparkling white with a blue ceiling, new lighting installed and chairs recovered using material designed by a student from Canterbury College. In August 2011 came the fabulous Grand Opening, with comedian Sandi Toksvig and Whitstable Brass Band in attendance. Gabrielle now runs the gallery, changing exhibitions around every six weeks, and most have a special theme, such as Water, Time, Awakening. The autumn show, which will run during the annual East Kent Open Houses weekends, will be Word Power. Asked what she has planned for the future of the gallery, Gabrielle says “I would like to attract more artists. I’d also like to have live music in the gallery and would encourage music students to get in touch.” The King’s Hall Gallery and Café opening hours are daily 11am – 4pm. Stepping Out hold evenings of Ballroom, Latin American and Argentine Tango at the Kings Hall throughout the year. How would you go about choosing a dance school for yourself or your child? What should you look for? Can anyone join? The answer to the last question is a resounding Yes! Dance can be enjoyed by all, it is good for fitness, brain function, Co-ordination, it can help with children’s confidence and provide a creative outlet for a more outgoing personality. Firstly, understand what you want to gain from dance classes. specialist dance school which has qualified, experienced teachers. This school will follow a recognised syllabus that has been carefully designed for pupils to make progress suitable to their age and ability. Following this tried and tested path is safest Adults don’t generally follow syllabi but these qualified teachers have the experience to work with all ages and physical requirements. Ideally classes should not be too large as all pupils should receive attention and coaching. Try out different styles if you are unsure which you would enjoy best and most important of all enjoy what you do. Dance classes are not just for budding professional performers, it is a hobby that if nurtured can last a lifetime. R. J. BROADLEY TREE SURGERY Tree Surgery . Landscaping . Herne Bay Harriers Football Club Herne Bay Harriers Football Club was formed in 1998 with just three teams representing the club in their first season. However, the club has grown considerably in recent years and is now the largest football club in Herne Bay with 18 teams playing league football next season in the Faversham District Youth League and the East Kent Youth Football Club. The club is very fortunate to have the use of Herne Junior School since it's very first game and the school has been a great supporter of the club . Although Herne is the main ground, games are also played at Briary School and Bell Meadow ,St Nicholas. Recently the club received recognition for it's strides made in recent years when it was awarded the Kent F.A Standard Charter Club of the year. With over 250 Standard Chartered Clubs in Kent it was a fine achievement for everyone involved with the Harriers. The club were also able to build new changing rooms last year . With club volunteers and many club fundraising events it was possible to

fund the whole project from club funds. On hearing the news from the Kent FA , Harriers Club Chairman Pete Tait said " I remember the very first Harriers training session back in 1998 at Herne School . To be where we are 18 years later is huge testament to our players, managers and committee. To be awarded Club of the Year by the Kent FA is a momentous occasion ". Club Secretary Paul Ireton was quick to praise the long serving members of the committee saying “Although players leave youth football at the age of 18, we have been very fortunate to retain such long serving managers and officers on the club-committee, even after their own sons have left youth football”. Paul added, “I must mention Pete Tait and Arnie Van Orsouw . Both have been with the Harriers from day one , and have been magnificent servants to both the club and to local youth football”. The 2015 season saw the the u13s win promotion for the third successive year and along with the u8s, u10s, u12s and u15s they will be playing Div 1 football next season. For

Reculver Towers Reculver Towers (TR228694) is an historic site; it was originally a Roman-Saxon shore fort and Saxon Monastery, it stood on the banks of the Wantsum - the channel separating the Isle of Thanet from the mainland. The first church recorded was dedicated to the priest Bassa and build by King Egbert of Kent in 669AD. The 12th Century St Mary's Church was torn down by villagers, in 1810, worried by the encroachment of the sea, they used much of the material to build a new church at Hillborough. The towers remain and were acquired by Trinity House in 1910 to conserve them as a landmark for sailors. In 1943 the RAF carried out test bombing runs of Upkeep (Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb) at Reculver; later used so bravely and successfully by 617 Squadron. • Friendly & helpful • Home selection service • No obligation • Domestic & commercial

The towers are used as a wind shelter by dedicated migration watchers who put in hours of birding and to their credit have added much to the local knowledge of coastal bird migration. The Thanet Coastal Path leads along the sea wall to the east and here is the best site for snow buntings and shore larks, both winter species in Thanet. There is also a good chance of spotting common and velvet scoters, divers and grebes off-shore. The shell-fish farm has produced rare long-tailed ducks and rednecked grebe in the past, and a few little egrets are usually seen.

Inland, the winter fields are often host to a large flock of dark-bellied brent geese, but care should be taken with the identification as the rarities; black brant and light-bellied brent geese have been recorded recently. In winter, marsh and hen harriers quarter the fields in search of rodents and small birds, their preferred prey; they are occasionally joined by the day-flying short-eared owl. To the west of the Reculver Towers is the Reculver Country Park leading to the Bishopstone Glen LNR, much of this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geological, historic and wildlife interest. Bishopstone Glen LNR is one of the best sites to find rare late autumn migrants such as yellow-browed, Hume's leaf warbler or Pallas' leaf warbler. Amy Johnson Herne Bay Project
“believe nothing to be impossible” Amy Johnson, British record-breaking aviatrix of the 1930s, national heroine and international celebrity, died serving her country off the shores of Herne Bay on 5 January 1941. Amy was just 37 years old and the tragedy was made more poignant by the mysterious circumstances surrounding the crash and dramatic rescue effort that failed to save her. The RAF Accident Record Card gives Herne Bay as Amy Johnson’s final destination. Her body and the wreckage of the plane were never found. The story of this incredible icon of her era has largely slipped into obscurity. A whole generation has never heard of this pioneer of flight, national treasure and inspiration whose achievements have paved the way for women in aviation today. The Amy Johnson Herne Bay Project is retelling Amy’s story, searching for the wreckage of the plane and building on her legacy to inspire the next generation to consider a career in aviation, aerospace and engineering, or to follow their dreams as Amy did. 24 HBCM02 Magazine A/W.indd 24

remembering An information board, unveiled by Amy’s family in September 2014, tells the story of Amy Johnson’s life and tragic death. It is positioned on Herne Bay seafront looking out to where Amy lost her life. Its purpose, to educate and inspire. The Herne Bay project is working with the Amy Johnson Festival board in Hull, who will be holding an international festival of art and engineering inspired by the life of Amy Johnson in 2016. Both groups wish to commission full size bronze statues of the aviatrix. Once complete, the figures will be the only full size bronzes of Amy anywhere in the world. Should we succeed in raising the necessary funds the statues will be unveiled in Hull, Amy’s place of Magazine when responding to advertisements 07/08/2015 12:40

birth, and in Herne Bay next year marking the 75th anniversary of her untimely death. The purpose, to celebrate and remember her life.
Searching The Canterbury Divers, a local group of amateur divers with an in depth knowledge of diving in the Thames Estuary, have agreed to take on the challenge to search for the wreckage of the Airspeed Oxford that Amy flew on her final journey. It is believed that all that remains of the plane are its engines. Co-ordinates for the crash site are known but conflicting witness statements and complex and dangerous diving conditions make the search challenging and time consuming. The divers are currently operating out of two elderly inflatable boats and cover the costs of equipment, maintenance and fuel themselves. They need up-to-date surveys of the crash site and surrounding area and a more substantial and suitable vessel with the necessary equipment to enable them to dive safely.

This search is the only long term official search for the wreckage of Amy Johnson’s plane and is fully supported by her family. The project is also searching for answers to the many outstanding questions associated with the mystery surrounding the death of Amy Johnson. Extensive research has been carried out by project leader Jane Priston and new evidence has been uncovered. Jane has also used existing evidence to review the facts and is drawing new conclusions which, if proven, may lead to history being rewritten. The research is extensive and time consuming and assistance is required both financially and in terms of manpower.
inspiring Amy Johnson was ahead of her time. A great believer in the spirit of being ‘air minded’ and the future of aviation, she was compelled to risk her own life to promote what she felt passionate about and in 1930 became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Despite great progress in many areas, women in aviation are still in the minority and changes need to be made at primary level education to encourage young people to be inspired by the challenges and excitement of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). With a recognised shortage of students studying theses subjects and entering careers in aviation, aerospace and engineering, the AJHB Project is committed to act. We are working with organisations and schools to build on the legacy of one of the country’s pioneering aviators to inspire the next generation to open their minds to the STEM subjects and to “believe nothing to be impossible” (Amy Johnson 1936).
