Stanley Joined by Star Wars Guests to Open New Charity Shop
A family who are helped by Demelza Hospice Care for Children were the star guests at the opening of its new charity shop. Sevenyear-old Stanley and his family, who use Demelza Kent in Sittingbourne for respite, were joined by Minions, Storm Troopers and Darth Maul at the opening of Demelza’s new shop in Herne Bay on Saturday 16th January. Mum Claire explained the difference Demelza makes to her family, saying, “Demelza are a lifeline. Stanley absolutely loves it, there’s never any worry about him when he’s there. It puts us at ease if we go away.” The new store at 30 William Street is just a few doors away from Demelza’s previous shop in

Demelza provides care and a place to play, relax and recharge, for more than 800 children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families. Both our 10-bedded hospice in Sittingbourne, Kent and our six-bedded hospice in Eltham, South East London offer a range of specialist services, including day care, short-stay care, symptom control, end-of-life care, psychosocial therapies and bereavement support for the whole family. The care team is led by specialist children’s palliative care nurses and our facilities, which include multi-sensory rooms, soft play areas, a hydrotherapy pool - and The Inclusion Zone for teenagers - ensure children make the most of their stay at the hospice. When a child dies, their families can use our bereavement suites, known as the Hop Garden in Kent and the Butterfly Suite in South East London, to let go and say goodbye at their own pace. We have multi-faith, quiet rooms for reflection or prayer for people of all faiths or no faith to use at any time whilst their child is with us. In addition to residential care, the Demelza

community team provides a ‘Hospice at Home’ care service for children and families in East Sussex, Kent and South East London. Specialist paediatric community nurses go directly into the family home to provide day care, crisis intervention, an on-call service and respite, combined with short breaks and other services. This flexible care provision enables families to live their lives in their own environment and take away some of the strain of caring for a life-limited child. Parents have described having the opportunity of an undisturbed night’s sleep as pure luxury. The Demelza community team also offers the choice of 24 hour end-of-life care and gives medical help and expert advice in the home.

Collection Pot Volunteers Needed Demelza Hospice Care for Children is appealing for volunteers to collect and drop off collection pots across East Kent. Volunteers are needed across Demelza’s area but in particular in the Dover, Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Birchington, Herne Bay and Westgate areas. Lynne Clark, Head of Voluntary Services says: “We rely on the regular income from collection pots to help run our hospice service across Kent but we really need more people to help us drop off and collect this vital source of money.” Anyone interested should contact Jade on 01795 845170 or volunteering@demelza.org.uk

Walking For Health Only a third of adults in the UK are active enough, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. We’ve done this with great success for over 14 years now, improving thousands of lives. Our walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable people, specially trained for the job. Along with fellow walkers, our walk leaders provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that’s right for them. In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, well-being and confidence. From what our walkers tell us, there’s also plenty of laughter to be heard on our walks. Together the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support run Walking for Health. By sharing our walking and health expertise, we support hundreds of local schemes across England to offer short, free walks. Our aim is to help more people – including those affected by cancer – discover the joys and health benefits of walking. To find out about your local walks visit the Walking for Health website and enter your postcode into the walk finder. www.walkingforhealth.co.uk/walkfinder

Lions at Large
Did you know that, at the moment, there are 44 Lions in Whitstable and Herne Bay? They may not be as easy to spot as Ryan, the Lions’ mascot, but they are there, working behind the scenes, fundraising for those in need and responding to requests for help and support from local people. If you enjoy helping others, meeting likeminded people, see yourself making a difference, raising funds and having fun, making new friends at social events, you might consider becoming a Lion too. Just give us a call on 01227 792032 - we’d love to hear from you! We welcome men and women from all areas of the community, regardless of race or religion. Every penny supports good causes, and as we are all volunteers, 100% of the money donated goes to those in need. Generous donations by local people have enabled us to help many local organisations,
families and individuals including; Greenhill Gymnastics Club, Whitstable and Herne Bay Sea Cadets, Strode Park, Whitstable Sea Scouts, Kent and Surrey Air Ambulance, Whitstable Gymnastics Club, Pilgrims Hospice, Whitstable and Herne Bay Umbrella Centres, Blood Runners, Kent Association for the Blind, and Hope for Tomorrow, a new mobile Cancer unit. There just isn’t room to list them all. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us. We couldn’t do it without you. Lions’ President, Geoff Lindley If you know of anyone who needs our help, please get in touch. We can’t always help but we will certainly do what we can. Herne Bay Sailing Club
Now is a good time to join the club as we anticipate a year of fun and challenging sailing in the bracing waters of Herne Bay. Members are able to sail their own boats or kayaks anytime of the week during the sailing season with launch and recovery via the club’s own slipway. Safety cover is provided on Sundays during racing and Saturdays during cadet and improvers sessions. Club week in August is one of the highlights of the year: three days of dedicated cadet training and fun activities, a picnic cruise east or west and a day of racing, social sailing and socialising. There is competitive, good-natured sailing on Sunday afternoons from April to October, with races on Sunday mornings too from early summer onwards. Novice and cadet sailors are encouraged to join in. As well as the five main series, there are many cup races and annual events including the cadets race, the ladies race, the greybeards race (gentlemen over a certain age), the Paul Smith and Jim Newbery memorial weekend, Bart’s Bash and the RYA Push the Boat Out. As an RYA Training Centre and OnBoard club we carry all the credentials and experience you will ever need to get started, or to improve, in what is the most exiting of water 10 HBCM04 Magazine A/W.indd 10-11

sports: dinghy sailing. We are experienced; we’ve been training for over 12 years and are certified by the RYA. We supply all the kit and equipment you will need, and use a wide range of boats during our courses - from RS Teras and Optibats, to RS Q’bas, RS Fevas, RS Visions and Wayfarers. Whether you want to start from scratch, improve and learn new skills, or get to grips with the intricacies of racing, we’ve got a course for you. We also run Powerboat courses, Instructor/Coach and First Aid courses. Saturday Improver sessions are very popular with all ages. It’s not all about boats, though. We have a busy calendar of social events throughout the year kicking off with the New Year’s family walk to Reculver for a Sunday lunch. The bar and galley are open during all events and after racing. Members can often be found on a Friday summer evening enjoying an impromptu BBQ with a beer while watching the fantastic sunset from the decking. Regular social events including the highly-popular curry nights and pie and mash evenings, quiz nights and the annual ladies day. The year ends with the Dinner Dance, AGM and the Boxing day Mad Hatter’s Race and mince pies. The club house is available for private hire by members and non-members for a small charge.

Herne Bay Photographic Club is a small, friendly group, ideal for anyone with a passion for photography. With a wide range of ages and abilities, it provides an opportunity to meet and share the interest with likeminded people. The club provides a full and varied programme from September to May, with something different every week. This includes friendly members’ evenings for critiquing each other’s work, interactive instruction evenings, lectures from external speakers, and a variety of competitions. In addition to the programme, the Club puts on public exhibitions, and gets involved in local activities, and the Club is particularly excited to be involved in one in particular; we have been invited to organise and run a Photographic Competition on behalf of St Martin’s Church, Herne. The church is embarking on an extensive restoration project and has secured a Heritage Lottery Grant for the first stage of the repair work. The competition, which is free and open to the public, provides an opportunity to come and take photographs of St Martin’s. The church will be open to competitors on Sunday afternoons throughout April and May, and at other times by arrangement. Information about the Competition is available on the Club’s website (see opposite).

The deadline for entries is 31st May, 2016, after which, the Club will select the finalists in each age category. Judging and prize giving will be in the church on Sunday 3rd July, which coincides with the annual celebration of its patron saint, St Martin. The shortlisted images will be displayed in the church over the 2nd/3rd July weekend and the Club will also provide an exhibition of members’ work for visitors to enjoy. The Club meets on a Tuesday evening at the Beacon Centre, 78 Sea Street, Herne Bay, 8pm-10pm (doors open at 7.45pm). Membership costs £20 for the remainder of the year, plus a door fee of £2 (includes refreshments at the break). Visitors are welcome to come along to three meetings and see what the club does for just the door fee. Eight years ago, Jane Priston set out on a mission to bring the memory of aviation pioneer Amy Johnson back to life in her final resting place of Herne Bay.
a far off dream. However, after receiving a personal recommendation, Jane got in touch with artist Stephen Melton at Meltdowns Fine Art Production Studio in Ramsgate to discuss whether or not this dream could in fact become a reality.
This inspirational woman, who died serving her country in 1941, defied social expectations and became an icon of her time after her daring solo flight from London to Australia in a Gipsy Moth biplane in 1930 - just one year after being awarded her pilot’s licence.
She explained that she wanted a life-size Amy to stand among the crowd as a lasting tribute to her, to keep her memory alive. After some discussion, Jane realised that the bronze statue was no longer a dream; she had found a team with the skill and resources to bring her idea to life, and at this point she knew it was achievable, so she commissioned Meltdowns to begin the process of making the sculpture.
Jane Priston’s dream was to inspire a new generation by bringing the story of Amy Johnson back to Herne Bay, and in 2014 an information board about this great woman was unveiled on the seafront. But this was by no means the conclusion of the project…it had always been Jane’s ambition to install a bronze statue of Amy in Herne Bay, but she had always felt like this was nothing more than
Stephen Melton told me that the design process has very much been a collaborative effort. They are “continuing the ageless tradition of figurative sculpture, and we really found it important to depict her, not standing static like a monument to

a Royal, but actually physically moving and being dynamic, interacting with the environment, because that’s what Amy did”. He continued, “she was a go-getter, and the narrative that we wanted to employ was her interacting with the crowd and the environment, looking at the sky and assessing the conditions, making the decision as to whether, that day, she was going to fly or not”.

It was very important to Jane that this was an interactive tribute to Amy so that a new generation could get up close to her and be inspired. The bronze will be embellished with quotes from Amy Johnson, and Jane told me that there may even be some hidden ones so that people have to really search and get up close to find them. “We didn’t want her to be elevated on a plinth like a god, but amongst the crowd, because that’s who she was; a middle class girl from the North who did exceptional things”. “Amy was a real people’s person, and she hated the celebrity side of what she did. She had to embrace that just to be able to fund what she wanted to do. She was a woman; she couldn’t fly for a job - it just wasn’t possible - so she had to play the game, but she detested that side of it. She just wanted to disappear in the crowd, so when Stephen and I started speaking, the first thing I knew was that I wanted her on the ground so that when Herne Bay is busy, she almost disappears”. The statue is currently at the maquette stage, but this will shortly be modelled into a full size clay sculpture, and then the final stage will be casting it into bronze. In order to get to this stage, Jane has worked hard to obtain funding which has largely been from members of the public and donations from local businesses. The project still requires some additional funding before the grand unveiling by HRH Prince Michael of Kent on 17th September, so if you would like to donate any amount, big or small, please contact Jane through www.amyjohnsonhernebay.com

Kent Coast Theatre Whitstable has long been celebrated for its annual events and activities, plus a very vibrant live music scene and quirky visual arts. With the ever popular Oyster Festival, the historic Carnival, the fantastic Harbour Day and now Whit Lit, this town leads the way in Kent for creativity and culture. KCT, a new contemporary theatre company, based right here in Whitstable, aims to compliment and work alongside all these events and add to the unique fabric in this very eclectic town. Founded in July 2015 by Lou Fowkes and Alison Mead, KCT aims to champion new writing, challenge and re-work traditional plays, perform in interesting and non-theatre spaces, but above all, offer local actors the chance to perform in a professional environment, working to a high level of expertise, with advice, support and guidance. We are delighted to welcome as our Patron for KCT, Whitstable resident and acclaimed actor of theatre, film, TV and radio Raymond Coulthard. KCT ran its first Acting Course in the Autumn of 2015 at Whitstable Castle. The ten weeks covered theatre disciplines such as performance skills, text work, improvisation, physical and vocal techniques, character building and Commedia. The group of fifteen actors then presented selected scenes from well-known plays at a Showcase Evening at The Horsebridge in front of an invited audience of friends and family. The reaction and response from the audience on the night was truly overwhelming and immensely positive. KCT will continue to offer these workshops throughout the year, in order to develop our actor’s technique in theatre performance. We will also link up with schools, colleges, groups and associations in the East Kent area to fully engage with the local community. We will provide a variety of plays with high production values, whilst giving our audiences diverse community led pieces, that will involve group work, building a close company willing to push the boundaries 20 HBCM04 Magazine A/W.indd 20-21

of community theatre at its best. We are delighted that The Horsebridge will be our ‘home’, as we feel it is the perfect place for KCT and thank them for their kind support. Our debut production for KCT, to be performed at The Horsebridge in July will be Animal Farm, written by George Orwell in 1945. Reflecting the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, it is a challenging and thought-provoking piece of theatre. The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Sally Waters attended the opening of the new theatre and said, “KCT is offering fantastic opportunities, not just for the local Whitstable community, but also for the wider community, including all people of all ages and abilities.”

Herne Bay Festival is core funded by Canterbury City Council but as budgets for the arts decrease, extra funding is vital if we wish to continue producing great quality events and opportunities. In 2015 the festival received an amazing amount of support from local organisations and individuals including Kent County Councillor Brian McDowall and the KCC Combined Members Grant, Vattenfall, RAM Collectable Toys, Direct Pizza, SAS Amusements, Kimber Woodward and Century 21 Praediis. Without this generous support some of the main festival events may not have gone ahead or would have been significantly stripped of resources. Luckily this didn’t happen and we are eternally grateful. It is clear from attendee and steering group feedback that the festival is very important to the town and the people: it delivers high quality, community engaging events; it creates job opportunities for locals; it attracts more visitors to Herne Bay. By sponsoring HBF 2016, not only will you be supporting your local community, but you will also receive a number of benefits! There are four sponsorship packages available for organisations & groups to choose from, which are also attached to this email. Last year the festival reached over 12,000 people with visitors travelling from as far as London, Cambridge and Glasgow just to attend.

Her music is a fusion of jazz, folk and blues knitted together by poetic, streetwise lyricism. The Guardian’s jazz critique John Fordham describes Gillespie as ‘(joining) Bob Dylan’s lyrical bite and languid delivery to the forthrightness of Joni Mitchell, with a little rap-like percussiveness thrown in, she is an original.” Sarah’s band features James Maddren on drums, Ben Bastin on double bass and Mercury nominated pianist Kit Downes on piano and organ.

“Go outside. Remain”Nick Offerman
A wise man once said go outdoors and remain there. there might still be a chill in the air but days are getting longer and the galanthus are in bloom – it’s the perfect time to prep the garden. Here are some beginner tips to get you started at this time of year.
Get G et your your tools tools in order order Everyone needs the tools of their trade. My big five for the garden are fork, spade, hoe, rake, and trowel. A good pair of gloves are a must and a decent pair of secateurs will be at home in your pocket. A wheelbarrow completes the rock star look.
Compost C ompost One of the first things you want to establish is a compost heap. This can begin as simply a sunny corner in the garden where you put your vegetable scraps but you’ll soon want a container of sorts. There are numerous ones available on the market but it’s an easy job (and fun) to construct one from scrap timber or pallets, old tyres, bricks or wire mesh. A quick search online will yield countless tutorials; ignore them all and make up your own design. Avoid placing the heap on concrete, patio slabs or tarmac. You want a site on bare soil so worms and other creatures can colonise, they help mix the compost. When adding ingredients include a healthy mix of green (vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, plant prunings, grass cuttings etc.) and brown (cardboard egg boxes, scrunched up paper, small twigs etc.) waste. Do not add meat or cooked food waste, this attracts rats, and avoid citrus. Some egg shells provide good minerals though!
Three: Prepare the ground In other words: weeding. Dig out tired old shrubs and weeds, especially perennials (thistle, nettle, bindweed etc.) Try to remove all parts of the roots, but don’t be over hasty. Please mention HBCM04 Magazine A/W.indd 32-33

01227 722250 My grandfather would tell me a garden would only ever be finished if there was nothing left to take out. Use a fork to turn the soil over, hoe and then rake. Then bask in satisfaction. At this time of year if you’re not going to plant anything for another week or two then it helps to lay some old carpet over your freshly turned soil. This prevents new weeds from getting any sunlight and helps warm the ground.
SSow A simple way to start planting is sow some herb seeds in small pots with fresh compost and sit them inside by a window with plenty of light. Water regularly but don’t drown them. Basil, parsley and thyme are all pretty easy to look after and don’t take long to grow. If you also grow tomatoes this year some basil will taste great with them.
Five: Sit
e y.
Another tip from my grandfather: when the work is complete don’t forget to sit in the garden; it’s important to enjoy the space you’ve created. If the nights are a little chilly, grab some blankets, get a fire pit on the go, cuddle up and crack open a bottle of the parsley wine you’ve had brewing in the shed since last year. You didn’t think we were sowing herbs for a salad now did you! By Stewart McClelland

Local paintings and prints will give you a flavour of life before the town was developed and antique photographs and postcards will introduce you to the Victorian seaside. More recently, Barnes Wallis tried out his famous bouncing bombs of Dambuster fame at Reculver and you can see an original prototype recovered from the sea years later. With a programme of regularly changed exhibitions, the museum is interesting, historical and educational, and well worth a visit if you want to know more about the story of this area of North Kent. Exhibits are displayed on two floors with a lift for wheelchair users. There is a gift shop with inexpensive books, cards, gifts and toys as well as a range of items made by local artists. It costs only ÂŁ2 for admission but there are annual tickets and concessions for senior citizens. Children enter free, so why not bring them to one of our weekly story-time sessions every Wednesday at 11am?
The Seaside Museum
12 William Street, Herne Bay, CT6 5EJ Nearly eighty years had passed since the Herne Bay museum was set up when, in 2010, as a cost-cutting exercise, Canterbury City Council proposed its closure. After vigorous local objections, the Council relented and sought options to put the museum into local community management as a result of which the Herne Bay Museum Trust was formed and, with the help of a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers, took over the running of it in July 2015. The sea is central to the Herne Bay story, which is why the museum is now The Seaside Museum. Come along and see the newly refurbished museum! Herne Bay was founded barely two hundred years ago, but, in that relatively short period it has developed character and heritage while the surrounding area has a rich history and fascinating flora and fauna. The town grew as a prosperous resort that once attracted visitors in their thousands, mostly from London, who came down by boat to the newly built pier and promenaded past, which was then the tallest clock tower in the country and the first in the world to be built specifically to support a clock. However, a visit to the museum will also take you back thousands of years to a time when elephants and mammoths roamed the coast and where fearsome sharks swam offshore. It will take you to a place where prehistoric 34 HBCM04 Magazine A/W.indd 34-35

Noteify the Band! A five-piece function band formed late last year, Noteify is made up of front-woman and manager Mazz Rhodes, guitarist Luke Martin, keys player and guitarist Dan Yates, bass player Jon Beetham and drummer Jamie Selby. Following on from her time with a few local function bands, Mazz decided to get a new band together after a short break away from music. She wanted to create a busy function band that not only has a talented selection of musicians but also an extensive set list that covers 50s to present day, multiple genres of music to entertain audiences of 8 through to 80 and beyond at Weddings, Corporate Events, Festivals and Special occasions. Mazz was at college when she met Jon, now Noteify’s fantastic bass player, who, in the daytime, runs music workshops for people with Dementia. Jon and Mazz then went to University together and this is where they met Jamie, Noteify’s talented drummer - Jamie has been in many bands and has toured the USA, all whilst being a full time drum teacher. Looking for the final member they setup auditions only to realise between them that two of the musicians who attended the auditions, Dan and Luke, would work perfectly together and so Noteify became a five piece. Versatile musician Dan along with solid guitarist Luke slotted in neatly giving the band the sound and depth they were looking for. Months down the line, Noteify now have a polished set list and gigs lined up, and with their clever covers, big vocals and captivating performance they are set to take the Kent music scene by storm with Mazz at the helm. So if you’re looking for a band for any occasions or want to know more about Noteify check them out online at www.noteifytheband.co.uk or ‘Like’ them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/noteifytheband …or better still, why not come to one of their up-and-coming gigs to hear a songs by Black Cherry, U2, Pharrell Williams, OneRepublic and Kenny Loggins to name a few.
