HellinglyHighlights From the Editor’s Desk I hope that this edition of the Hellingly Highlights finds you all well and that you had a happy and peaceful Christmas. The coming year looks to be a busy one for the Council. Work is underway to develop a design team to deliver the new Community Hall to be located at the Country Park. It will be some while before the site becomes available to the Parish Council but it is hoped that work should start before the year is out. A planning application has been submitted for the cricket pavilion and a decision should be received this month. Work will then start straight away so that the Pavilion is ready for the start of the season in May. Hailsham Cricket Club will be leasing the Pavilion from the Council, they have an active youth section so if anyone is interested do please get in touch with them. You will remember that in the last issue I
mentioned that the Council had secured funding to buy 2 defibrillators for the Parish we now have these and they should be installed soon. There is an article elsewhere in the Highlights providing more information. The Council will once again be organising some Active Play sessions in the Easter holidays. Dates and times are still to be agreed so look out for information on the Council Noticeboards and Website. As mentioned in the previous edition there will be Elections in May, for Parliamentary, District and Parish Candidates. The Village Hall will once again be used as a Polling Station on 7 May. The Statement of Persons Nominated will be published on 10 April so we will know then whether the Parish of Hellingly will be going to Poll. The Council is made up of 15 Councillors so if more people apply than that then there will be an election. You are eligible to stand for u

Bring it on! So here we are in 2015! New Year and a new vicar! It was fantastic to meet so many people, albeit briefly over the Christmas period. It was also good to know people’s generosity with our chosen charities. Iasis Medical Trust has benefitted by around £1700 and the Children with Cancer Fund by around £100. Thank you to all. Sadly the darker elements of our society were also apparent with the break in to Upper Dicker church just after Christmas. But that is what the Church is about! We are here to spread light into darkness.
Hailsham- like football pitches, or how to provide facilities for the youth such as on Roebuck Park, or ensuring that there are appropriate facilities on the new development off New Road. As a church we can help to contribute to the overall common good within the community. In the coming months we shall be working out ways in which we can make an ever increasing impact on our community. Join with us if you can and together we can be an ever growing force for good within our area.
So we face some considerable challenges in the new year. There are issues in our community, such as lack of facilities across

Health Centre First Birthday!!!
Patient access
We were very proud to celebrate the Health Centres 1st birthday on the 6th January – John was given a surprise party by all his colleagues at the Health Centre which included him being serenaded with their version of Abbas ‘So I say thank you for the music’ to the words of ‘So I say thank you for the building, the last one was minging!!’ (we did video it!) . It had been a very long and testing journey to get the Health Centre built but we all appreciate working in such a wonderful building.
*** Sign up Sign up*** Sign up to Patient access with one of our receptionists – Patient access allows you to book and cancel appointments at your convenience, request repeat medication and see test results on-line. Simply ask one of our receptionists for log on details.
Recruitment Sadly Nurse Sarah left in December due to family commitments, we are now in the process of recruiting. Lola and Jane are currently covering Sarah’s sessions.
Parking at the Pharmacy When using the Pharmacy please use the parking spaces provided, we have had complaints about customers parking directly outside the Pharmacy on the double yellow lines.
Electronic Prescribing Service The Electronic Prescribing Service is a free NHS service. It enables GPs to send prescriptions electronically to a pharmacy of your choice. This makes the prescribing and dispensing more efficient and convenient for patients and staff. The service gives you more choice about where to get your prescription from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop. Please note you can only nominate one pharmacy. Please let one of our Receptionists know which pharmacy you would like to nominate.
Thank you Thank you to all our Patients and friends that gave us lovely Christmas gifts – we are working our way through all the biscuits, chocolates and wine!!
Christmas sing a long We had a wonderful Patient Christmas singalong in December – we raised over £50 for Hailsham Trust. We sang to our hearts content all the Carols we could muster. The winner of our Carol Quiz was Janet Hansell, Janet and David are now the title holders of our Global Annual Carol Quiz!!
Hailsham food bank donation We delivered the food parcel to Hailsham Food Bank on the 23rd December and the volunteers at the centre were very appreciative of all the food that had been donated by the Patients and Staff of Herstmonceux Health Centre.

Hailsham Cricket Club Hailsham Cricket Club are delighted to announce that we are coming to the picturesque Roebuck Park cricket ground for the 2015 season. Hailsham is a family friendly club, very much focussed on our local communities. We are now coming to Roebuck Park, on a long term basis, as the club has grown to the extent where we now need two grounds. We currently have four Saturday teams, a thriving junior section with over 100 juniors, as well as Sunday and mid-week teams. Our success to date has been built upon very strong links to our local communities and we want to involve and work with the local Roebuck Park community as much as possible. Our first match will be played at the ground on Saturday 2nd May and we would really love to see as many people as possible turning up to support the club that day and then throughout the season. Prior to that, for
everything to go ahead smoothly for the first game we would really appreciate all and any help local residents are able to offer. We are looking for donations and support from the local community, ranging from things like crockery, cutlery, cups and mugs, to forks, spades and wheelbarrows (and much more). Any offers will be a massive help alongside any donations through our Just Giving account. We are also very interested to speak to anyone who feels they may have some time or skills they could volunteer to help the club, be that through ground work, administration, coaching with the juniors, umpires or from anyone who just wants to play the sport we love so much. We see so much potential at Roebuck Park and are especially excited about the amount of extra cricket our juniors will now play with the new ground. We hope to have games

Canine Partners - Puppy Parent Gill Webb, of East Sussex, is a volunteer puppy parent for Canine Partners. This is her story‌ In July 2013 I retired from a very fulfilling career as a Head Teacher. I was very excited at the prospect of being able to commit myself to something worthwhile. My two golden retrievers also looked forward to having long walks. Being with them reminded me as to how we had enjoyed agility classes and training with them in their younger days. I started to explore on the internet, for these sort of opportunities and luckily I came across Canine Partners. I was particularly drawn to the idea of becoming a puppy parent and receiving training to improve my own training skills. I contacted Canine Partners and received details as to what was involved in becoming a puppy parent. By August I had my first puppy called Xavi, a flat coated retriever. He was delightful and together we learnt and developed the skills he would need to be an assistance dog. My own two retrievers were also very patient and cooperative allowing him to enjoy cuddling up to them on their bed at the end of a long day. Having a puppy again brought about lots of daily challenges and some immensely pleasurable moments when we both got things right. I received lots of support along the way from the Canine Partners trainer and I realised how much I enjoyed problem solving when Xavi needed a different approach, in order to successfully complete a task. I have thoroughly enjoyed the support and friendship of the other puppy parents. The chance to laugh and relay weekly puppy antidotes has been a real source of amusement. 16 HellinglyHighlights
Ashmore Training a puppy meant gradually introducing him to various experiences; he regularly visited supermarkets, farms, shops and towns. We also helped with information and fundraising events such as local Rotarian Conferences, Guides and Summer Fayres. Xavi also gained confidence in using the local buses and trains. All these things were valuable experiences in preparing him for his future role as an assistance dog, partnered with someone who has a physical disability. Weekly training classes were a good opportunity to come together with likeminded people. At first I was quite selfconscious when I made mistakes and was frustrated that things we did perfectly out of class could go wrong in class but I soon realised, the beauty of puppies is given time and patience they do learn. Xavi has since gone on to advanced training and has been partnered with a disabled person. Since then I have taken on a second puppy, Fallon. She is a black Labrador and she came to me when she was five months old. She is a real poppet and I have been really pleased to be able to build on my previous skills and watch her grow in confidence. Needless to say the Canine Partners experience has been a truly rewarding one and I can highly recommend it. The personal satisfaction in knowing how the dog you trained will be able to help a disabled person is enormous. Would you like to help transform the life of someone with a disability? the Parish. So, if you would like to help us to reach our 100th Birthday, DON’T BE SHY COME AND GIVE US A TRY Please contact 01323 442592.

Saving our cinema Margaret Rose describes how The Hailsham Old Pavilion Society (HOPS) exists to maintain and preserve Hailsham’s iconic Pavilion cinema and entertainment venue Take a walk down George Street, Hailsham, and you’ll come across one of the town’s best-loved treasures – The Hailsham Pavilion. Opened in 1921, the Grade II listed building is not just one of the oldest picture palaces in the country, but remains the only independent cinema and entertainment venue in the area. Like many of the cinemas built during the golden age of film in the ’20s and ‘30s, it’s had a chequered history. During its lifetime, it’s also been used as a Bingo hall before being closed in 1987 and left to the mercy of the elements. But unlike many of its contemporaries, which have ended up bulldozed to make way for new developments, The Hailsham Pavilion has survived. This has been largely due to the efforts of former Hailsham mayor, June Bourne, who in 1993, in consultation with fellow councillors, decided to rescue and develop the now derelict and neglected building. A fund-raising supporters’ organisation was formed called The Hailsham Old Pavilion Society, better known as HOPS, and the fully restored and refurbished building was officially opened by June on February 1, 2000, to provide big screen and live entertainment for the residents of Hailsham and the surrounding community. Today, HOPS is a registered charity with over 800 members, and last year was proud to be able to donate £17,000 to The Pavilion
for its upkeep and modernisation. So far, the money it has raised has enabled The Pavilion to ‘go digital’ with the installation of a digital projector in 2012, and this year it is hoped the addition of two satellite dishes will facilitate ‘live streaming’ of theatre and music events. For those members of the Hellingly community who are new to the area or didn’t even know The Pavilion existed, it is well worth a visit. With just over 200 seats (plus facilities for wheelchairs) and one screen, it doesn’t pretend to offer the same cinematic experience as the multiplex units at Eastbourne, Uckfield or Brighton. But what it does offer are the latest movies and the occasional niche film, viewed in what has been described as ‘one of the most elaborate small provincial cinemas ever built’ but which still retains a cosy and welcoming atmosphere where local people matter. The Pavilion aims to make a visit to the cinema something everyone in the community can enjoy, even if they have a disability. For example, thanks partly to money raised by HOPS, it is hoped this year to introduce an audio description transmitter so the visually impaired can have the plot of a film described to them and not hear just the dialogue. Similarly, it is hoped in time to offer those with partial hearing a better solution to the hearing loops currently in place, possibly by the introduction of English subtitles.

And it’s not just those with physical disabilities who are catered for. Last year The Pavilion introduced autism friendly screenings for any family with a child or young person on the autistic spectrum. Details of autism friendly films scheduled can be found on The Pavilion’s website www.pavilionhailsham.co.uk But despite such initiatives and innovations, the fact remains that The Hailsham Pavilion is a very old lady in constant need of care and attention. Without the money raised by HOPS it would undoubtedly close. So if you’d like to keep this wonderful piece of Hailsham’s heritage going as your local cinema, why not consider joining HOPS. Subscriptions cost just £10 a year for single membership and £15 for joint membership and, as a HOPS member, you also get 10% discount on your cinema tickets. You can take part in all manner of fundraising activities like our annual golf day

at Willingdon Golf Club, our dinner/dance held every two years, as well as regular quiz nights. You might even want to come to The Pavilion as we celebrate the 50th anniversary screening of the original Dr. Who and The Daleks film on Friday, February 13 (fancy dress optional). If you’re interested you can contact the HOPS membership secretary, Jennie Elphick, on 01323 487300 or jennie.elphick@gmail.com or call in at The Pavilion box office for a membership form. Residents’ Association of If you have just moved to Roebuck Park then ‘welcome’. The Association hopes that you find Roebuck Park a safe, enjoyable and peaceful place to live. We would like you to join us because the more Residents that we represent the stronger we are as a body. The Residents’ Association is like many others in that we are people who come together to address issues within our local area and act as a voice for our local community. We have a committee voted in at the Annual General Meeting each year. As with many associations ours consists of a chairman, secretary and treasurer together with a number of committee members. All committee members have specific responsibilities. Our joining membership fee is £5 and this helps towards costs such as stationary or rental of a meeting room etc. We have created a network of members using e mail and put out regular information circulars that updates everyone on the issues that the Committee are involved with on your behalf. We have a constitution and the objectives of the Residents’ Association are:a) To safeguard and promote the interests of the Residents’ within the area of Roebuck Park, Hellingly, East Sussex b) Regularly consult and inform all members and represent their majority view c) Promote membership to all Residents aged eighteen (18) and above d Liaise with the developers (while relevant), the Village Management Company (while relevant), Parish
Council, District Council, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, local Neighbourhood Watch schemes and any other organisations (governmental or otherwise) as deemed appropriate by the Committee, with the intention of fostering good relations and furthering the interests of the Residents of Roebuck Park f) The RARP shall not represent individuals in any disputes g) The RARP shall not be run for any profit. We are adjacent to the Hellingly Country Park that when completed will consist of children’s playgrounds, a basketball court, a cricket field and pavilion, 2 ponds stocked with fish, nature reserve areas and woodlands. This area is not fully opened but when completed it will be handed over to Hellingly Parish Council for the use of the whole community. The area that is opened and used by the public has seen incidents of bad behaviour. We are trying to prevent this because it is only a few individuals that are making it unpleasant for the majority of us so if you witness a crime, suffer a crime, see anything that you feel constitutes any incident such as anti-social behaviour:“Anti-social behaviour is any aggressive, intimidating or destructive activity that
28 HellinglyHighlights
Roebuck Park (RARP) damages or destroys another person’s quality of life.’ Anti-social behaviour is legally defined as someone acting ‘in a manner that caused, or was likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household as himself ” Please make sure you contact the police on 101 and obtain an incident report number or 999 if an emergency. We would appreciate it if you would let us know of any incidents that you report, with the reference number that you receive, so that we can follow this up. Although we can log incidents and report them to Orbit and/or the Management Company and/or Parish Council the part we cannot do is report to the police on your behalf as they will need to give you a personal crime number.
As you can see from the size of Roebuck Park and the external agencies we talk with such as the Parish Council it is almost impossible for us to resolve personal issues or problems unless related to our community. We are very keen as an association to promote a safe and clean environment for us all to live in. These include keeping car speed down, keeping dogs on leads, picking litter up and if your children use the play parks being aware of local Residents who have houses close by from a noise perspective.
