HellinglyHighlights From the Editor’s Desk Welcome to this latest edition of the Hellingly Highlights. I hope that you are all enjoying receiving it through your doors and that you find it interesting and informative. Don’t forget if you have any events that you want to advertise that you can send us an article to be included. Those of you that live at or visit the Country Park will notice that the Cricket Pavilion has not yet been built, unfortunately there has been a delay in delivery. We are in constant contact with the developers in respect of this and they have said that they will provide a temporary solution until the Pavilion itself can be delivered. The first game of the season will take place on 2 May. I am sure that you will all agree that the pitch itself looks wonderful and is a real asset for the area. Once again we ran Active Play sessions during the school holidays and these were well received. It is nice to see that we now have a group of regulars that attend. The sessions are open to all children and are free
of charge. A variety of activities are on offer and all ages are catered for. The Council have arranged two sessions for the May Half Term holiday, these will be on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 May between 2-3.30pm. We said in the last edition that the Defibrillators we had organised would soon be put up, we have finally received the boxes for these and they really will be going up soon, there is a more detailed article about this later on in this edition. Finally from me, the Annual Meeting of the Parish will be taking place on Thursday 14 May at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The format this year will be slightly different and again a more detailed article is elsewhere in this edition. I hope that you will come along to find out what is on offer for you in the Parish. Hellingly 10k This year’s Hellingly 10k will be taking place on Sunday 13 September so plenty of time for Hellingly residents to pull on their trainers and start training. Hailsham Harriers provide support for runners of all abilities and training sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm from Summerheath Hall, Hailsham. Additionally there are many other friendly runs during the course of the week. If you don’t fancy running the event then we always appreciate the support from the local residents who not only tolerate the running field using the local roads but also provide encouragement to the runners en route. Once again the start will be at 10.30am in Station Road and will follow into New Road before turning for the climb towards Cowbeech, before turning left to tackle the undulations of Cinderford Lane prior to the delight of running down Grove Hill before returning to race HQ at Hellingly Village Hall via Mill Lane and North Street. Do come and cheer the runners home and enjoy the notorious vast array of cakes!! Hope to see you there whether running or cheering, thanks again for the ongoing support from the Hellingly residents. Hellingly Community Park Trust There has been some progress on the Park since I last wrote, but not as much as we had hoped. The Cricket Pitch is now ready for the first match on 2 May and it looks extremely good. Unfortunately, the new pavilion is behind schedule and Persimmon will be providing a temporary set-up for the start of the season, probably porta-cabins. After the time we have spent trying to ensure it would be ready on time this is not the outcome we envisaged. The large fir trees between the Park and the new Community Hall have nearly all been felled. This is in line with the original planning permission for the Park, which has been substantiated by Wealden DC. These trees were extremely tall, shallow rooted and in many cases unsafe and ugly. Four cypress
trees along the drive have been retained and these match the planting on the other side of the drive and will give some benefit to the site when it is developed. The ponds are looking good and some Canadian geese and ducks are in residence. It now looks as though the whole park will be handed over at one time, maybe at the end of the month, but I don’t believe this date will be achieved. We have just completed our entry for the Sussex Heritage Awards in the Landscape section. This is for a restored landscape. Inspection will be in mid-May and the results in July. We feel that this is a large project, which has been ongoing for many years, so we hope we have a chance of winning. Gill Hesselgrave Chairman

Defibrillators Update on the 2 Defibrillators for the Parish of Hellingly The Parish Council are pleased to announce that the 2 defibrillators are now in the process of being installed, one at the Kings Head the other at the Village Hall. The boxes are alarmed but not locked so the machines will be accessible 24 hours a day. No training will be necessary to operate the machines, full instructions are spoken to the operator whilst using the machines. In the future the Parish Council hope to purchase at least one more defibrillator to be placed at the Community Hall in Roebuck Park but this will be after the building has been completed. The Parish Council will be holding First Aid Training sessions over the next few months with a view to putting together a First Responder Team, more details of these sessions will follow in due course. If you would be interested in attending First Aid Training please contact the Deputy Clerk on deputyclerk@hellingly-pc.org.uk or call on 01323 844108

More Houses Coming Wealden District Council has recently approved four planning applications for 47 new houses in the Parish. 18 Detached houses have been granted permission on the site of the glasshouses of the former Neilson’s (later Danecroft) Nursery in Station Road, Hellingly - pictured below. These used to grow poinsettias and other plants for sale to supermarkets but the business closed in 2001 and they eventually became derelict.

17 houses, mostly terraced, have been approved on the site of the former Golden Martlet public house and Carriages Squash Club (now used as the Cuckoo Rest bar) also in Station Road, Hellingly. The former was burnt out in a fire in 2001 and later partly demolished. The squash club closed in 2003; and the bar is not commercially viable. 8 detached houses have been permitted on the site of the former NHS offices known as Bowhill in the Drive, Roebuck Park. These became redundant and empty following the relocation of the offices. The 1.26ha of ancient woodland on the site will be retained. 4 detached houses have been approved on the site of Crystal Dispensing in Lower Horsebridge. None of the above developments will include any ‘Affordable’ housing units to rent. Cllr. John Blake Wealden District Council

Hellingly Wl The members of Hellingly WI would welcome any ladies who would like to come along for a visit to one of their meetings, and maybe join us in the future. We are a small group of friendly ladies who meet once a month in Hellingly Village Hall, on the first Tuesday of the month at 2.30. We enjoy: speakers with a large range of interests, lunch outings to places of members’ choice, we visit other Wls, for Group meetings and to celebrate their Anniversaries. We have a garden party in the summer, and an annual afternoon outing. But one of the important parts of our organisation is the making of new friends. Hellingly WI was started in 1918, so last year we were proud to celebrate 95 years of continual presence in
the Parish. So, if you would like to help us to reach our 100th Birthday, DON’T BE SHY COME AND GIVE US A TRY Please contact 01323 442592.

Hailsham Cricket Club Hailsham Cricket Club are eagerly awaiting the start of the new cricket season and with it the chance to play at the fantastic new Roebuck Park ground. After a hugely successful season in 2014 that saw the 1st XI winning division 3, and our under 9’s and 12’s winning their respective leagues, we are all eagerly awaiting the new season to see if we can build upon those on field successes. Off the field of play, 2015 is probably one of the most important years in the club’s history. We are absolutely delighted to have secured the new Roebuck Park cricket ground in Hellingly as the new home for our 3rd and 4th XI’s. The ground promises to be one of the most picturesque settings for cricket for many a mile. Having met with the Chairman of the local Roebuck Park Residents Association we know we will have the support of the residents for our teams at that ground and we look forward to becoming a part of the local community. We are also delighted to announce that we have managed to arrange tie ups with two other sporting teams to use the ground. The Scorpionz Cricket Academy have agreed to share the Roebuck Park ground with us for games and training of their youth team players. This will see the ground being used on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. And a new stoolball team (the Roebuck Park Stoolball Team) will be coming to the ground for fixtures on a Tuesday evening. If you would like to get involved in any of these, please feel free to get in touch.
Away from Roebuck Park, we have submitted a planning application for a major extension and refurbishment of the pavilion at our home ground in Western Road, Hailsham. If successful that will be the start of an ambitious project to take a long term lease of the pavilion from the Town Council and to raise almost £150,000 to deliver the project. The existing pavilion has been there for just over 100 years and these exciting plans will help us deliver a first class pavilion that will leave a lasting legacy for at least another 100 years. We are very fortunate to be supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who help with the general running and administration of the club and the coaching of our youth teams. We also receive fantastic backing from all of our supporters, many voluntary and community organisations, local businesses, the local Town and Parish Councils and our wonderful sponsors. We have also been overwhelmed by the generous support we have received from local residents, players and their families in the form of donations to the club to help us be ready for the new season at Roebuck Park. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the club and who can rightly share in its success. We hope that you will all enjoy the 2015 season. If you, or anyone you know, would like to find out more about our fantastic cricket club, or would like to help us deliver our future projects, then we would be delighted to hear from you. Otherwise we really looking forward to seeing you at Roebuck Park in the coming months where we hope you will share some of our passion and enjoyment of cricket.

Residents’ Association of If you have just moved to Roebuck Park then ‘welcome’. The Association hopes that you find Roebuck Park a safe, enjoyable and peaceful place to live. We would like you to join us because the more Residents that we represent the stronger we are as a body. The Residents’ Association is like many others in that we are people who come together to address issues within our local area and act as a voice for our local community. We have a committee voted in at the Annual General Meeting each year. As with many associations ours consists of a chairman, secretary and treasurer together with a number of committee members. All committee members have specific responsibilities. Our joining membership fee is £5 and this helps towards costs such as stationary or rental of a meeting room etc. We have created a network of members using email and put out regular information circulars that update everyone on the issues that the Committee are involved with on your behalf. We have a constitution and the objectives of the Residents’ Association are:a) To safeguard and promote the interests of the Residents’ within the area of Roebuck Park, Hellingly, East Sussex b) Regularly consult and inform all members and represent their majority view c) Promote membership to all Residents aged eighteen (18) and above d Liaise with the developers (while relevant), the Village Management Company (while relevant), Parish
Council, District Council, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, local Neighbourhood Watch schemes and any other organisations (governmental or otherwise) as deemed appropriate by the Committee, with the intention of fostering good relations and furthering the interests of the Residents of Roebuck Park f) The RARP shall not represent individuals in any disputes g) The RARP shall not be run for any profit. We are adjacent to the Hellingly Country Park that when completed will consist of children’s playgrounds, a basketball court, a cricket field and pavilion, 2 ponds stocked with fish, nature reserve areas and woodlands. This area is not fully opened but when completed it will be handed over to Hellingly Parish Council for the use of the whole community. The area that is opened and used by the public has seen incidents of bad behaviour. We are trying to prevent this because it is only a few individuals that are making it unpleasant for the majority of us so if you witness a crime, suffer a crime, see anything that you feel constitutes any incident such as anti-social behaviour:“Anti-social behaviour is any aggressive, intimidating or destructive activity that
28 HellinglyHighlights
Roebuck Park (RARP) damages or destroys another person’s quality of life.’ Anti-social behaviour is legally defined as someone acting ‘in a manner that caused, or was likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household as himself ” Please make sure you contact the police on 101 and obtain an incident report number or 999 if an emergency. We would appreciate it if you would let us know of any incidents that you report, with the reference number that you receive, so that we can follow this up. Although we can log incidents and report them to Orbit and/or the Management Company and/or Parish Council the part we cannot do is report to the police on your behalf as they will need to give you a personal crime number.
As you can see from the size of Roebuck Park and the external agencies we talk with such as the Parish Council it is almost impossible for us to resolve personal issues or problems unless related to our community. We are very keen as an association to promote a safe and clean environment for us all to live in. These include keeping car speed down, keeping dogs on leads, picking litter up and if your children use the play parks being aware of local Residents who have houses close by from a noise perspective.
