Firstly, we welcome Councillor Rob Lancashire as the new editor of the magazine, which will allow the Clerk to pick up additional work in other areas as for example the new Kelvedon Neighbourhood Plan begins to take shape. This will be a major undertaking that could affect all of our lives unless we take effective steps to shape and control what development is allowed within the village.

Hooper, Rob Lancashire, Mike Pilbeam and Richard Minns who is our new councillor. Thus over a third of your Parish Councillors will have joined the Parish Council in the last six months. In some quarters there was concern at the small number of candidates coming forward from the community but Facebook posts suggested that residents were happy with the service and work that the Parish Council did to protect, support and enhance our community. The Parish Council will also acknowledge (elsewhere) the substantial workload that has been undertaken by our two retiring councillors Leslie Hill and Jane Coates, who have together given 68 years of service to the Parish Council as well as the work they have undertaken within other organisations. The Parish Council were very pleased to see that Braintree District Council (BDC) had withdrawn its plans to limit our ability to

comment on village planning matters, so we now have the situation where if the Parish Council objects to a planning application it has to be heard by the full Planning Committee of BDC. We have won this initial battle but have to keep an eye on where the process goes in the future. Work has commenced on our Neighbourhood Plan and we are pleased to provide a more detailed update later in the magazine. As always we need more volunteers so if you want to have a hand in shaping the future of the village please come and join us. The Parish Council is working with police to try and reduce local low level offending, in particular drinking and drug use on the Recreation Ground, and some arrests and progress has been made in this area. The doorbell thieves have also been identified and dealt with. Of greater concern is visiting groups of offenders who come into the village to burgle

properties and then depart before we realise any offences are occurring. Please keep your eyes and ears open and using 101 ring in any concerns that you may have. Descriptions and car registration numbers are especially useful to our local police and camera phones may also provide useful evidence. If you see or hear an offence occurring please ring 999 as recent crimes have involved smashing a way into homes via patio doors. We are also seeing some better weather now but please remember to lock doors when going out and to shut and lock all appropriate windows so that Mr Burglar does not have an easy route into your house and possessions. Having said all of this Kelvedon remains a low crime area however visiting villains can cause a spike in offending and we need to keep an eye out for them. I hope everyone has a good summer. The Chairman

Letter from the Chairman

Hello again and welcome to the latest edition of the parish magazine. As I am writing this article, the notice has just appeared on Braintree District Council’s website confirming that there will not be a contested election for Kelvedon Parish Council on 7th May as there were only 10 nominations for 11 seats. In practice this means that the council will need to look to co-opt an additional person after its first meeting of the new council year (being held on 19th May). I actually find it quite disappointing that, despite having advertised the elections for a

number of months, in a village of Kelvedon’s size, only 10 people are seemingly willing to put their heads above the parapet. The reality is that, with all the talk of localism, more and more jobs and responsibilities are being pushed down the chain to a lower level than before. Certainly, Kelvedon Parish Council is finding that there are many more consultations to respond to, jobs to pick up that others have kindly offloaded and so on, not to mention lots more paperwork.

Being a solicitor is about more than just knowing the law. Whether you need legal advice for your business or your family, we know that you expect straightforward expertise from someone who knows their area of law inside out. I do also wish to express my thanks once again to Lesley Hill and Jane Coates who stood down at the May election having served an incredible 68 years between them on the Parish Council. Their contributions over the years have been hugely significant and their experience will be missed. Having said that, the Council now has a new dynamic with several new members and it will be interesting to see how that dynamic develops over the year ahead. We are all aware of the general financial situation in the country. Kelvedon has its own issues. During the last year, there was significant expenditure on the skate park and

on resurfacing the two ‘Chases’. In this coming year, the Parish Council has to pay business rates on its offices and on its car parks (all for the first time) as well as costs for pension provision for its staff (again for the first time). These, coupled with an ever reducing grant from Braintree District Council, means that finances will be tight over the coming year. The immediate consequence of this is that there will be far less money available to offer as grants to village organisations. That is regrettable but a fact of life. In the slightly longer term, I see it as inevitable that the precept (which Braintree District Council collects from residents on behalf of the Parish Council) will need to increase next April. It is far too early to say by how much but do remember that what might seem to be a large percentage increase is, in absolute terms, only a few pounds per year. Speaking of looking ahead, you will doubtless know that the Kelvedon Neighbourhood

At this stage, I wish to welcome on to the Council Richard Minns, who was nominated to stand for election in May. There are lots of challenges ahead (more of which anon) but I am confident that the council will rise to meet those challenges.

Plan had a very successful launch in March with 122 people attending the initial meeting at the Institute (and we had to turn another 30-40 people away due to lack of space). I think that does indicate the level of concern that is being felt in the village with the prospect of potentially significant numbers of new homes. Over the next few months we shall have a much clearer picture from Braintree as to the number of new homes needed across the whole of the Braintree area each year and also where new developments might potentially happen. The Council is very grateful that a number of residents have expressed an interest in becoming involved with the Neighbourhood Plan, but if more of you are interested but have not yet offered your assistance, it isn’t too late to get involved!! Make no mistake, this will be a major piece of work and it really will take a lot of involvement from residents and other stakeholders to see the job through to fruition.

The next important stage in the process is that RCCE (Rural Community Council of Essex), on behalf of the Parish Council, will be carrying out a housing needs survey which will be assessing what sort of houses (and how many) will residents be needing in the coming years (e.g. how many people might look to ‘downsize’, how many might be looking for affordable local housing for other family members, and so on). This information will form a vital part of the evidence base needed to support the Neighbourhood Plan so please do take the time to complete and return it – answers are anonymous and the Parish Council will only get to see numbers, not personal details. A final word – thank you to those who turned out for the Annual Parish Assembly at the end of March which was held earlier than usual due to the pre – election period. This does offer a particular opportunity for

residents to meet their local representatives and to ask questions and make comments directly to them. Of course, it was noticeable that Essex Police were conspicuous by their absence. There now seems to be a policy in place of not engaging directly with communities or indeed their representatives through such meetings. Personally I find this both disappointing and frustrating and I know my colleagues share that view.

Youth Forum

Kelvedon & Feering Scout Group By Gil Heathcote

The village is lucky to have a vibrant and active scout group led by volunteers who meet weekly during term time and provide excellent activities for children aged 6-14. Group highlights in the last year included a visit to Holland for a week by 16 scouts where they enjoyed using Dune Scooters, Archery, Sea kayaking and Power Kiting, as well as games with other scouts from the District. Richard and John (Scout and Panther Cub pack leaders), ran an enjoyable morning at the HQ where parents could come and have a go at archery to help raise funds for this visit abroad. The superb display of bulbs in the village this year, kindly donated by Perrywood Nurseries, were planted by the Scout Group in containers and round the base of trees. This followed on from the previous year when Perrywood gave the Scouts bulbs to plant on the land adjacent to the Packhorse Bridge between Kelvedon & Feering. The Eagle cubs came second in a District competition which included a crossword, writing a promise and border, designing a T Shirt and making a lanyard, and the Scouts had a great time at “Go Bananas”. There was

62 BRAINTREE ROAD, WITHAM

a Cub forum at Prances where two Cubs from each group made pizzas and played games. At Christmas a tree was decorated which looked lovely as part of the St Mary’s Church annual event. All Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as well as the Guides meet at the group’s HQ located off St Mary’s Rd, where they enjoy their own dedicated facilities. These were enhanced recently with new lighting above the entrance gate, which all agreed was a great improvement. Looking to the future the Scout Group’s annual Carnival is being planned for the 11th July, with the theme based on music.

Another Cub forum is set for October and the group is planning climbing, abseiling, canoeing, zip wire rides, cork guns, rifle shooting, unihoc, woodland crafts and mountain biking activities in the year ahead as well as raft building for competing in the Maldon floats races. In addition there are facilities for Archery at the HQ with qualified instructors amongst the leaders.

Chief Scout, Bear Grylls says that he wants young people to produce inspirational leaders and volunteers for the future. It’s not always the big, bold stuff, but the simple acts of everyday adventure that help members develop and reach their potential, so why not come along and get involved.

The Group has one of the largest Scout troops in Essex, two large Cub packs, and one Beaver colony, and welcomes all new members to come and join in the fun whilst learning lots of new and interesting things. However this can only continue if the group gets the adult volunteers needed to run it. We urgently need another leader for Beavers or the colony may close, so if you want to do the same as

Neighbourhood Plan By Cllr Rob Lancashire, Lead Cllr on Kelvedon Neighbourhood Plan

Progress on the Neighbourhood Plan continues following the capacity public meeting (with approximately another forty people turned away due to safety limits) at the Institute on the 7th March where Jan Cole of RCCE explained the purpose and process of a Neighbourhood Plan. Over sixty people registered for more information and following a call for volunteers twenty people met on the 22nd of April to kick the process off. This was a successful evening which saw the creation of task groups to look at the areas of housing, moving around, natural environment, health & social care, education, and retail and employment, specifically identifying what additional information each group needed to be able to formulate initial options for the plan. Each task group will now meet regularly reporting back to the main steering group every quarter. Minutes of this meeting as well as more detail is available on the Council’s website at http:// www.kelvedon.org.uk/neighbourhood-plan/. The intention is to provide an update on the initial work of the task groups at the Community Festival which will occur on the Recreation Ground on Saturday 18th July, so come and take a look then. In parallel to organising the steering group the Parish Council successfully applied to Braintree District Council to have the current parish boundary designated as the plan area, with this being approved by BDC full committee on 30th March 2015. The Parish Council also voted at its April meeting to approve an initial budget of £12,000 for the Neighbourhood Plan process, with £8,000

coming from available grant funding and £4,000 from Parish Council funds. The first expenditure will be a housing needs survey sent to every household in the village so that we can gauge your views and future needs. This is quite an expensive thing to do so please do take the time to respond so that we make sure we get maximum value from the community money we are spending. We expect BDC to give indications of housing development allocations later this year which is when the village, as a key service village, will know what is being proposed. Irrespective of whether Kelvedon is allocated a lot of new housing or none at all, the Neighbourhood plan is our opportunity to have our say in any future development and to ensure that our already over stretched infrastructure is considered first by anyone wishing to develop in the village. There is a continued need for more people, particularly people with specific skills in the task group areas, to get involved with the plan so that we get the widest spread of views, therefore if you want to keep Kelvedon a special place to live, come and get involved! For more details on how you can join the steering group contact Peter Studd, Kelvedon Parish Clerk.

Parish Councillors

Meet the new council

Following notice of the election of a new parish council on the 7th of May and a wide call for applicants, ten people applied to stand for the eleven parish council seats and therefore the election was uncontested with all candidates being duly elected. With the stepping down of two long serving councillors for a well-deserved rest after many years of dedicated service, the resulting appointment of new faces to the council in the form of Anne Blackwell, Des Holmes, Rob Lancashire and Richard Minns means it retains experience whilst gaining new input and ideas, allowing the council to continue to meet and exceed the needs and expectations of the community‌ in comparison some of our neighbouring parish councils got very few applications and in one case none at all! The council would like to thank all those candidates who put their names forward for election as the position is voluntary and requires a considerable contribution of personal time.

Your Local Councillor

Cllr Mike Pillbeam

Mike settled in Kelvedon in 1984 when he was employed by SCOPE, formerly called the Spastics Society, to manage the residential centre called Grangewood on the High Street. It wasn’t long until he was responsible for the management of other services in the locality including Drummonds in Feering and some bungalow services in Tiptree amongst others in the East of England. He has been on the Kelvedon Parish Council for 6 years and has been particularly involved within the planning committee, the finance committee (Chairperson), Christmas lights subcommittee, representing the Parish Council as a representative on the Institute and Packhorse Bridge management committees and a tree warden. Mike is also the councillor with special interest in health and social care services. Mike is semi-retired and works as a specialist brain injury case manager and independent health and social care consultant. In the past Mike has worked as a combat engineer in the Royal Engineers, a registered nurse, social services principal officer, senior operational manager in private healthcare services, and as an Operational Director within a major national charity providing services to people with complex and challenging needs. Mike has held a number of positions within statutory bodies and has previously been the Chairman of the Mid Essex Community Health Council, a member of the North Essex Local Research Ethics Committee and the joint chairperson of the North East Thames regional group of Community Health Councils. Mike tries to bring the diverse knowledge and experience of his past job roles and management experience to the tasks placed before the Parish Council. When Mike is not on Parish Council business or duties he is a keen, but not very good, clay pigeon shooter and a member and 3 times president of a London based Rotary International Club. Mike has also been known to participate in the “occasional pint” at the local hostelries and clubs; he is also a member of CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale). Throughout Mike’s life he has been a strong advocate for people who have a range of additional physical, emotional, sensory or learning support needs to have a greater opportunity for involvement and inclusion in their community. Through Rotary International he has been involved in responding to requests from the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) for “Wateraid”, 16 KPC05 Artwork A5.indd 16-17

emergency accommodation packs, vaccination programmes and supporting youth groups in London. Mike is a Councillor who wants the Parish Council to deliver a fair and equitable service for all parishioners not just those who have the ability to access facilities through knowing and using their rights. Mike is aware that the current and future demand for housing within our district is going to create changes both physically and socially to the community. He believes that through planning by developing the Kelvedon Neighbourhood Plan, in advance of housing unit numbers being allocated to Kelvedon by Braintree District Council, we will be able to get the best deal for the village. Using the Neighbourhood Plan the parishioners of Kelvedon will be able to identify and evidence the shortfalls in community resources, healthcare services, educational facilities and

infrastructure that the increase in housing and residents will create. The neighbourhood plan will allow the parishioners of Kelvedon to have a greater control of the village’s development in the future. Mike supports the “localism agenda” that is trying to give greater control to local communities albeit that in today’s world not always with the tools or funds to deliver the outcomes we would wish.

Parish Council

The recent parish council election saw Jane Coates and Lesley Hill, two of its longest standing councillors, step down having contributed over 68 years of service to the council and village between them. The Parish Council is sure the village would like to join us in giving them both a heartfelt thank you for all their superb efforts over the years. We asked them to take a walk down memory lane and recollect the various council initiatives they have been involved with over the years… in addition to the regular monthly council meetings they have attended come rain and shine!

Jane

Whilst I have been involved in many aspects of village life, my main interests have been working with and for young people and as well as in the village environment. So being on the Recreation committee for 30+ years, I have enjoyed being part of the setting up of facilities for our younger residents, e.g. installing play equipment and building the hard play area on the Recreation Ground.

Many years ago, I, together with other members of the recreation committee, obtained and oversaw the renovation of the ‘hut’ in Easterford Road (a lot of the labour was voluntary, especially the painting!) and set up a Youth Club, which was successful for several years. Until recently I was a member of the committee overseeing the present use by the Easterford Pre-School children. I helped to procure and fence the small play area between Glebe and Thorne Roads, which KPC and the Youth Forum have kitted out with play equipment in recent years. This latest project was initiated by the YF, which was set up 8 years ago and with which I continue to be actively involved, attending meetings and helping at the Discos, etc. I also served as a school governor for St Mary’s School for four years. BDC gave me an award for being ‘An Unsung Hero’ for my voluntary youth work. As a Councillor, we all have different tasks in addition to attending meetings; I read all the Health materials sent to the Council and report back my findings. Lesley and I have also been cheque signatories for the KPC bank account for many years and we have both signed other documents for KPC e.g. allotment agreements. I acted as KPC representative at meetings with Mid Essex Community Health, Kelvedon in Bloom, Brockwell Group and the Youth Forum. I love our village, and worry that it will be overdeveloped, so my interest in maintaining Brockwell Meadows as a Nature Reserve and walking the many footpaths, which I do regularly, will continue as will helping Kelvedon in Bloom. 18 KPC05 Artwork A5.indd 18-19

I was co-opted onto KPC November 1984 and then made Vice Chair in May 1997. I have regularly attended meetings taking particular interest in Planning, Emergency Planning, Finance and Recreation.

Lesley

Over many years, on behalf of the Council, I have attended other groups’ meetings, AGMs and Awards Evenings, namely Rural Community Council for Essex, Essex Association of Local Councils, Essex Playing Fields Association and also liaison meetings with Feering, Tiptree, Messing and Inworth PCs and Bradwell Pit (Blackwater Aggregates).

I was part of a subcommittee dealing with low-cost housing provision and a member of the panel with BDC to determine the first residents in the Cloisters. About 15 years ago, I participated in welcoming the Minister, who was here to see the traffic problems we have with no direct access to the A12 for Tiptree. A public meeting afterwards was well attended by residents. On New Years Eve 1999, I lit the beacon on the Rec to celebrate the start of the new Millennium. I checked plans from the two builders and found that the Bellingham Place Footpath did not connect and so I insisted on a joint plan, with no right angles in the path, with a successful outcome.

Along with other Councillors I had a ‘walk about’ with Olive Cowell (ECC) regarding possible pedestrian crossing sites along the High Street and prepared a photographic slide show for the council to consult with residents and businesses to decide the best place to site the preferred type of crossing. Due to no funding being available, this never bore fruit! Council work can be frustrating!

Several years ago, KPC was given 20 very large sacks of daffodil bulbs; Mick, the handyman, planted half of them in trenches on open spaces and I organised volunteers to plant the rest throughout the village. Whenever they grow and flower in the spring, I think of all the hard work our volunteers put into making Kelvedon bloom at different times of the year. In 2010, I prepared a slide show to present to the Council regarding the state of all the litterbins, proving the need for their replacement. The same year, I also received an award and framed certificate from BDC for my ‘Contribution to the Environment and Conservation’, particularly for my work with the Packhorse Bridge restoration. It has pride of place in my hallway. I took over the completion of the Best Kept Village Competition entry form in March 2009, after Jill Hinds retired as clerk, and I have just completed the entry for this year – a task I am happy to do until someone wants to take it off my hands! Like Jane, I love Kelvedon and will do all I can to preserve its character.

Moore Brothers

bicentenary celebration - Sunday 28 June

By Dave Cope, Kelvedon Museum

Moore Brothers was a family business started in 1815, as a carrier of goods and people in the local area and originally based at the Bell Inn, Feering. By the early part of the 20th century they had moved to Kelvedon and progressed to operating local bus services. Their bus operations remained based in Kelvedon until 1963 - eventually extending to serve towns including Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Tiptree, Maldon and Earls Colne when this side of the business was sold to Eastern National. To celebrate the bicentenary of the formation of this family business which is still in existence running commercial laundries elsewhere in Essex, the Kelvedon Museum has an exhibition on this locally based business which can be viewed until the end of June. And in support of the bicentenary celebrations, Sunday 28th June will see old buses, including the only remaining bus that was operated by Moores, operating from the Museum to local villages Feering, Coggeshall, Tiptree between 11:00 and 17:00. We are hoping to have 3 old buses available on the day, each with a connection to Moore Brothers or to Kelvedon - these will be: 1) The 1961 Moores double deck bus. This is owned by Arnie Brown and Dave Tucker from Basildon and has appeared regularly in the Kelvedon Carnival procession, as well as visiting the museum. It also had a starring role in the 1980s film “Boys In Blue” featuring comedians Cannon & Ball. 2) A 1953 Eastern National double deck bus partly owned by Dan Leatherdale who lives in Coggeshall, and whose parents worked for Moores. Dan’s mum was a bus conductor, or should that be conductress? (they were also known as “clippies”) during the 2nd world war. Dan’s dad worked as a driver for Moores 22 KPC05 Artwork A5.indd 22-23

when he finished his national service. Both double deckers were built as “Lowbridge” buses with a sunken gangway upstairs to enable them to get under the low bridges at Kelvedon and Chelmsford railway stations. This gangway could however catch the unwary traveller downstairs who would bang their head when getting out of their seat. Upstairs was also where the smokers went long before smoking on public transport was outlawed, and hence the stubbers on the backs of seats. Imagine the smokers fog upstairs when the bus was full! 3) A 1969 Eastern National single deck bus. This is owned by Dave Edwards who grew up in Kelvedon and Feering. This bus was for a time based in Kelvedon and Dave used to go to school in Colchester on this bus. So come along on the day to sample the delights of travelling by bus from an earlier age, view the museum exhibition and enjoy the children’s activities that will be available on the day. In addition, the exhibition is available to view on any normal museum opening day until the end of June. ‘

Kelvedon Players

Your local Amateur Drama Group By Leslie Hill, Kelvedon Players

Kelvedon Players have been performing regularly since their first show, Aladdin the Pantomime, in December 1949. In 1958 they won the all England National Drama Festival with their performance of The Crucible and have received many awards for acting, directing, choreography, costumes, set design and lighting effects over the years from North East Essex Theatre Guild, now called North Essex Theatre Guild. Although they are an amateur group, the productions are worthy of professional status. Three productions a year, a play in May, another play in October/November and a pantomime each January/February keeps everyone busy all the year round. Although in the past, outdoor performances have been very successful at different venues, the home of KPs is in the Institute Hall in Kelvedon High Street. The Parish Council’s car park, virtually next door, is a wonderful asset, providing off-street parking for both cast members during rehearsal times and audiences alike. Junior Kelvedon Players also put on two productions a year, including a pantomime in early December, and enter various Drama Festivals with One-Act plays justly receiving awards for their acting abilities. Past members

have gone on to become professional actors with ex JKPs member John Dagleish in having acted in the BBC’s ‘Larkrise to Candleford’ playing Dawn French’s son. He is at the time of writing, playing the lead role of ‘Ray Davies’ in the Kinks musical ‘Sunny Afternoon’ at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London. Besides actors and directors, Kelvedon Players also need technical and stage crew, and people to make properties for the set and costumes. So whether you are a budding thespian and your greatest wish is to tread the boards, you are talented in the art of designing sets or costumes, handy at finding things or making unusual props, or just fancy learning about lighting a set and other stage effects, then give KPs a try.

Visit www.kelvedonplayers.co.uk for all the latest news and to see past production photographs.

Kelvedon Dance Studio By Andrea Pridham

Kelvedon Dance Studio, also known as “KDS”, is a well renowned dance school. Established in 1963 originally as the Linda Lesley School of Ballet, classes have been based at the United Reformed Church Hall in Kelvedon since the mid 70’s. In 1981 the school was handed over to Andrea Pridham who gave it the name of Kelvedon Dance Studio. Over the years pupils have attended the Royal Academy of Dance, London College, The Royal Ballet School, Laine Theatre Arts, Bush Davies, Elmhurst, Stella Mann and Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. In fact one such pupil was Andrea Pridham herself, who furthered her dance training at Laine Theatre Arts. The school’s dedicated team of teachers are all former Kelvedon Dance Studio students. Kelvedon Dance Studio is proud of its history, its contributions to the Village

community, its relationship with the United Reformed Church, and its high standards of dance training. KDS offers classes for children from 3½ years old through to adults and teaches Exam grades for Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz, governed by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. The school organises theatre trips and a summer workshop, presents school productions and an annual Choreographic Competition. The school’s excellent links within the local community provides the students with further performance opportunities, dancing for the residents of the local Residential Homes and at local events. These experiences help the students to broaden their understanding of different dance styles and give them the essential experience needed for future careers in dance and on stage.

Also the school regularly supports students with other requirements, often with their GCSE and A Level Dance training, or the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, even preparing for the auditioning process when pursuing further education in professional dance training and performing arts. Recently two students Emma Allars (16) and Chloe Bain (15) successfully auditioned for the English Youth Ballet, who provide dancers between the ages of 8-18 years the chance to perform full length classical ballets on professional stages across England, Scotland and Wales. Emma and Chloe are two of just one hundred young dancers who have

been chosen to join the English Youth Ballet this year and perform in their production of Coppelia at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend on 21st & 22nd August 2015. Andrea and the Teachers at Kelvedon Dance Studio are immensely proud of the girls. They hope that Emma and Chloe enjoy every moment of working with the English Youth Ballet and are sure to be in the audience cheering them on when they perform in August! Classic Car Rally By Ken Aldred, Rotary Club of Kelvedon & District

On the last Sunday in June, the 28th, the Rotary Club of Kelvedon & District is organising a Classic Car Rally. This is an open event for cars manufactured before 31st December 1985 and we are hoping to make it an enjoyable day for participants as well as anyone else who is interested in classic cars. The rally will follow a circular route starting and finishing at Feering Community Centre, taking in some of the most scenic parts of Essex. The complete circuit is just under 90 miles, which will exercise arm muscles to an extent that all of us used to modern cars with power-steering will have long forgotten. We are also hoping to have some classic cars on display for those who just like peering under the bonnet. Our intention is to make it an enjoyable and fun day for participants and, at the same time, to raise some funds for our charitable activities. Are you an owner of a classic car? Interested in taking part, either driving or displaying? Just email the organiser, Ken Aldred, on ken.aldred@ talktalk.net for full details and an entry form. The Rotary Club of Kelvedon & District raises funds through many varied events

and uses them to support local community activities as well as sponsoring worthwhile causes overseas. Recently we have pledged financial help for the upgrade of Kelvedon Institute, have contributed to the roof repairs at Tollesbury Church and have funded some much needed embellishments to the mortuary suite at Colchester Hospital. Internationally, the club has helped to provide a new maternity clinic in Rwanda and has just organised collections to support Shelterbox in their help for the victims of the cyclone disaster in Vanuatu. The club meets every Tuesday night at The Blue Anchor in Feering and new members are always welcome. If you would like to know more about the club and what it does, please look at our website:

Kelvedon Community Festival Saturday 18th July, Kelvedon Recreation Ground, 12 noon to 7pm This free event, now in its 16th year, is organised and run by volunteers with the support of Kelvedon Parish Council and Braintree District Council. The Festival Committee is always seeking volunteers who can give up just an hour or two to help out at the event, or to get more involved in event organisation. If you’d like to get involved, please contact the committee through the website or facebook. The event is underpinned by commercial sponsorship. This ranges from placing adverts in the programme to large scale contributions. Many local businesses also give their time and equipment free of charge. All of our sponsors are included on the website www.kelvedonfest.co.uk and we are very grateful for their continued support. The main stage is sponsored by Hairways hair and beauty supplies. As usual this stage will be kicked off by St. Mary’s School Choir at noon. The bands performing on the main stage and acoustic stage will be outlined in the programme and on the website. This year we are also introducing a Silent Disco tent hosted by local DJs and sponsored by Hayward and Barrett civil engineering.

The KIDZ ZONE this year is being run by Kelvedon Youth Forum and Kelvedon Dance Studio. There will be lots of activities there for all the family. Some key messages to help you enjoy a great day out: • No alcoholic drinks can be brought into the festival. The beer tent will be selling a good range of real ales, bottled beers, draught lagers, and wine for sale at reasonable prices so you will not go thirsty. • Absolutely no glass is allowed. This is due to both health and safety and for licensing reasons. We have to be strict about this so please don’t be offended if our stewards ask to check your bag. • Please feel free to bring folding chairs and blankets and make yourselves comfortable. Some of the performers are more of a sit down affair but just as many will have people up dancing. We ask that chairs are kept back beyond certain points so there’s room for both the seated and standing (there will be signs and stewards to show you). • You may also bring gazebos to provide some shelter from sun or rain but the line for these will be even further back from the main stage. • BBQs are not permitted at any time • Bring sunscreen and water if it is a hot day • Keep the site tidy and respect our neighbours. Rubbish bags are freely available and there are plenty of bins on site. And please do bring your wallets. The surpluses made from trading on the day help to fund the festival for the following year. Have a great day!

Business The Kelvedon & Feering Business Network Group was started in 2013 to help bring together and promote trusted businesses that are based in the two villages. Unlike other business network groups, this one does not charge a membership fee. Its sole purpose is to raise awareness of trusted small businesses and sole traders that work in the local area. The only joining criteria for businesses is that they must be based in either Kelvedon or Feering however the group have been astounded by the sheer number of business owners that have joined the group. Louise Green of Kelvedon Massage Therapy claims, “We meet once a month, and our group is growing so fast that we have had to find somewhere bigger to hold the meetings. Luckily for us, John Wilson of the Kelvedon Labour Club has come on board and so we can now meet there, although if things continue we will be taking over the whole ground floor.” The group now represents around thirty local businesses including Accountants, Gardeners, Physiotherapists, Bricklayers, and Chocolate Manufacturers amongst others.

By Kelvedon & Feering Business Network Group Louise adds, “As awareness of our group grows, our hope is to have all trades represented so that local people don’t have to go outside the local area to have all their needs met. There are so many amazing suppliers in the local community that many people are not aware of. We aim to change that.” If you would like to see what local suppliers can offer you, please take a look at the Kelvedon and Feering website. Also, if you are a business owner in Kelvedon or Feering and would like to find out more about the group, please contact ask@kelvedonandfeering.co.uk All member businesses are run from either an office or retail premise in the Parish of Kelvedon or Feering and commit to active participation in monthly meetings. By supporting our members you can be assured that you are using a genuine local business with a vested interest in providing you with the best service possible.

MP for Witham Priti Patel on learning of the group said at that time, “I commend the efforts of all involved in getting this set up. The aims of the Kelvedon & Feering Business Group are hugely admirable, and I am sure it will build on the success it has already seen.”
