The Chairman
Letter from the Chairman Hello again and welcome to the latest edition of the parish magazine. Despite the vagaries of the British weather, I am hoping that we have seen the back of the winter and that spring is well and truly with us once again. In the last edition I was able to advise that Pippa had accepted the post of Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to the Council. Since then, Pippa has thrown herself into the job and has already made a valuable contribution. I am sure this will continue as she works her way through the inevitably large pile of matters sitting in the ‘in’ tray, as well as all the day to day matters that seem to crop up. Pippa has written a brief article elsewhere in this magazine.

Last time around I also mentioned that the Council had 2 councillor vacancies. I am pleased to say that this was resolved at the April Council meeting when the Council agreed to co-opt Louise and Will Humpington – relative newcomers to the village but they clearly have a firm desire to get involved in the community. I welcome them and am sure they will make a positive impact. Regrettably however, I have to advise that Terry Dixon tendered his resignation from the Council due to ill health. Terry has made a massive contribution to the Council and indeed to the village as a whole during the years he has been a Councillor. The Council will surely miss his valuable advice and support. We all wish him well for the future.

You have all had your Council tax bills for this year and I know some of you were surprised to see an increase of just over 19% in the precept. However, putting it in context, a modest rise over and above the previous figure was always going to generate a seemingly large hike in the numbers. But, again, the reality is that the rise in absolute terms of pounds and pence is actually pretty small. The note that the Parish Council put out on its website earlier, together with the comments I made in my report to the Annual Parish Assembly set out the background to this increase and why it has been necessary. It is far too early to speculate about what the position will be by the time it comes to setting next year’s precept but I don’t believe I will be far of the mark if I say that an increase next year is quite possible. The various costs to the Council are only going one way – upwards and, combined with less money being received in terms of grants, the Council may well be forced to consider a further increase next year. Braintree District Council is currently considering a number of sites in and around Kelvedon that landowners have put forward as potential sites for development. The sites that BDC ultimately select will go forward for public consultation in the near future so that will be a crucial time to have your say. However, we need to bear in mind that just because a potential site has been identified, this does not automatically mean that houses will be built there. Any developer will have to reach agreement with the landowner and any proposals will still have to go through the planning process. Residents will need to keep an eye out for potential developers coming forward and will be able to feed their comments into the planning process. The main point to bear in mind though, is that a planning authority can only consider objections that are made on planning grounds not simply that someone doesn’t want houses built in a particular place. I have said it before – some development in Kelvedon is inevitable. The real issues are size and location. The Neighbourhood Plan becomes ever more important. A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes but we have now reached the stage where developments will become much more visible. I do urge everyone to get involved – a successful Neighbourhood Plan depends on being able to demonstrate
6 KPC09 Artwork A5.indd 6-7
significant community engagement. To coin a phrase (sort of ) – ‘use it or lose it’. As we now know, the waste management facility at Rivenhall has passed through the actual planning process as the planners deemed the latest plans to be a variation of an existing application rather than a new application (which is how many of us felt it should be considered). The Secretary of State has declined to ‘call in’ that decision. The next stage in the process is an application for an environmental permit and an operating licence. How these progress remains to be seen. Policing (or lack of ) continues to be a concern. We know resources are scarce but it is the lack of engagement with the community that is the particular concern. However, all I can say is that if you don’t report a crime it won’t get recorded and if it isn’t recorded the force won’t know there is an issue and won’t target its scarce resources to try to tackle the issue. One other issue of particular interest to many in the village is the expected announcement in the summer by the Secretary of state as to which operator has won the new Greater Anglia rail franchise, due to commence in the autumn. As you may be aware there are 3 contenders – the current operator (Abellio), National Express and First Group (both of these have previously held the franchise). We are promised increased investment and a better service. Let’s hope that whoever wins the franchise, delivers. We shall see. That’s all for this time around. I hope you all enjoy the anticipated better weather coupled with the longer daylight hours. Craig Martin Chairman, Kelvedon Parish Council

By Pippa Potter, Kelvedon Parish Council Clerk May I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Parish Clerk and thank everyone for the very warm welcome I have received here in Kelvedon since I started. I have been a Parish Clerk for nearly nine years, working with Parish Councils of varying sizes and have always found it to be an extremely interesting and varied role. No two days ever seem to be the same and it is no different in Kelvedon! Now that the summer seems to be here at last, we are working hard to keep the village tidy and the grass cut regularly. We also hope that you will enjoy the meadows, playing fields and playgrounds this summer, however, if you do find any problems with litter or broken equipment, please let us know so that we can put it right as soon as possible. We are also working closely with the
Neighbourhood Plan group, who will be undertaking a survey very shortly. Please make sure that you complete and return this so that we can form a Plan which truly reflects the views of the village and will help to shape the future. Following the resignation of a councillor in May we are now looking for a new Parish Councillor to join the ranks. If you are interested in the role, please contact me for information. Details of dates by which applications need to be submitted will be on the noticeboard and website. Our office is open on Mondays from 9.30 – 12.30, or you can contact us by phone or email. Please also keep an eye on the website for news and details of upcoming meetings. Kelvedon is a vibrant and busy community and with my Assistant Clerk Sue Green, I am looking forward to working with you all.

RepoRT FRom The
2016 Kelvedon Annual Parish Assembly By RoB lancashiRe On the 27th of April the Kelvedon Annual Parish Assembly was held at the Institute. This is a yearly event open to all the residents of the village and the public, where Parish, Ditstrict and County Councillors present reports and take questions on the past year. Despite a very low turnout Parish Council Chairman Cllr Martin welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the Parish Councillors; Clerk; Clerk’s Assistant and all guest speakers. Sadly, apologies for absence were received from R Hon Priti Patel MP and County Cllr Lady P Newton. Following agreement of the previous year’s minutes Cllr Martin presented his report mentioning the change in Clerk and welcoming two new councillors. He particularly highlighted the Parish Council Finances stating that whilst a 19 per cent headline increase in the precept contribution looks horrendous, when set it in context the increase is actually 22p per week for a Band D property. With the reality being that the Parish Council is receiving ever decreasing amounts of grant monies from local government the trend is highly unlikely to be reversed if services and expectations of the village are to be maintained. He finished off by saying that the coming year will see a number of challenges and the workload will certainly not diminish. The challenges will be faced and met but this could not happen without the commitment councillors and the council staff, to whom he expressed his thanks. There was no report from R Hon Pritt Patel MP however District Councillor Robert Mitchell presented the report on behalf of County Cllr Lady Newton. Her report highlighted that Essex County Council needs to save £1,000,000 a week over the next 4 years. This is in conjunction with a rise in Council Tax for the first time in 5 years, with more rises likely in the future. She did however highlight key areas of investment by the council which included business, the elderly & vulnerable, delivering a first class education service and greater roles for communities. The
County’s initiative on superfast broadband was now reaching a further 10% of homes with 85% of the county covered and Public Consultation on new Lower Thames Crossing is on-going. The report rounded off with an announcement that following demand, responsive public transport was being introduced in the north of the County with more details to follow as this is progresses. District Councillors John Elliott and Robert Mitchell then presented their report from Braintree District Council. Councillor Elliott updated the meeting on the Local Plan, where he noted that the public would be consulted during a 6-week period from June to August with a further consultation in November/ December 2016, before a draft plan is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration in February 2017. Councillor Elliott stressed that no decisions had been made at present.

Councillor Elliott also informed those present that Braintree District Council had been awarded ‘Local Authority of the Year’ by the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign which was a great result for everyone in the District and something everyone should be proud off. Kelvedon Parish Council were thanked for their efforts in keeping Kelvedon clean and tidy. Councillor Elliot finished off by saying that a report had been sent to Essex County Council referring to numerous road and pavement defects, as well as poor road markings in Kelvedon but it was noted that Essex County Council had responded to say that funds for such repairs were short and all works would be judged on a priority basis. On environmental matters Councillor Mitchell added that Solar panels had been installed on the Lakes Road Discovery Centre with a new adventure skyline visitor attraction at the Discovery site. In addition, the District recycling service had been expanded to include flats. Councillor Mitchell also reported North Essex Parking Partnership was in the process of providing a residents/business parking scheme
in Station Road, to be in place by the end of the year; with a similar scheme being considered for Bridge Meadow. In relation to development and infrastructure he reported that 60 affordable homes had been built across the District and lobbying for improvements to the A12 and A120 was continuing. With development of the A12 to 3 lanes due to be started by 2020 he knew Highways England were fully aware of problems with A12 junction at Feering. He concluded the report by saying that a

handyman service was being provided for frailer residents in the District and that £1,500 per District Councillor was being made available to award to local projects in their ward. Cllr L Humpington raised a question regarding the timescales of the proposed Crown Estates Development at Feering. Councillor Mitchell advised that the application should not be determined until after 31 May but confirmed that District Councils were obliged to determine all applications that are submitted. The presentation of the Financial Report of the Parish Council was then followed by a report from the Neighbourhood Plan Group by Jill Hinds, Chairman of the group and Nicky Joshua, a Landscape Architect. The committee were encouraged to get involved in the Neighbourhood Plan by signing up for regular newsletters and updates. Councillor Dixon presented a report on the Youth Forum confirming that the discos had now been running for 10 years and continued to be well attended. Volunteers were currently being sought to run a disco for ‘older’ children. Councillor Dixon expressed the thanks of the
Parish Council to J Hinds for all her work as the Youth Forum Secretary. With the floor being turned over to questions from the public, the proposed development at the Grangewood site was raised; thanks expressed from the Jill Hinds, Chair of the Trustees of the Institute, to Kelvedon Parish Council for all their support with the new Small Hall; the appearance of the cycle lane markings; parking on Maldon Road, the junction of Sawn Street and Heron Road and outside the Conservative Club; and the safety of exit sight lines from the village carpark. Answers were given to all these question to the general satisfaction of the Assembly or commitment to further investigations and actions were given by either the Parish Council or District Councillors. The Assembly will take place again on the 26th April 2017 and represents a great public forum opportunity to put your elected representatives on the spot, to hear how they are representing you and spending the public money you pay in council tax, so why not come along and be heard!

KELVEDON Community Festival By Jan Stobart
The Festival this year takes place on Saturday 16th July at Kelvedon Recreation Ground from 12 noon to 7pm. This free event, now in its 17th year, is organised and run by volunteers with the support of Kelvedon Parish Council and Braintree District Council. The Festival Committee is always seeking volunteers who can give up just an hour or two to help out at the event, or to get more involved in event organisation. If you’d like to get involved, please contact the committee through the website or facebook. The event is underpinned by commercial sponsorship. This ranges from placing adverts in the programme to large scale contributions. Many local businesses also give their time and equipment free of charge. All of our sponsors are included on the website www.kelvedonfest. co.uk and we are very grateful for their continued support. We are currently looking for a sponsor for our Main Stage. If your business would be interested in partnering with us, and having your name across the stage in front of over 3,000 people, please get in touch through the website. As usual the Main Stage will be kicked off by St. Mary’s School Choir at noon. The bands performing on the main stage and acoustic stage will be outlined in the programme and on the website. The Silent Disco tent, hosted by local DJs, will make a welcome return, and there will be lots of activities in The KIDZ ZONE for all the family.
12 KPC09 Artwork A5.indd 12-13
Some key messages to help you enjoy a great day out: • No alcoholic drinks can be brought into the festival. The beer tent will be selling a good range of real ales, bottled beers, draught lagers, and wine for sale at reasonable prices so you will not go thirsty. • Absolutely no glass is allowed. This is due to both health and safety and for licensing reasons. We have to be strict about this so please don’t be offended if our stewards ask to check your bag. • Please feel free to bring folding chairs and blankets and make yourselves comfortable. Some of the performers are more of a sit down affair but just as many will have people up dancing. We ask that chairs are kept back beyond certain points so there’s room for both the seated and standing (there will be signs and stewards to show you). • You may also bring gazebos to provide some shelter from sun or rain but the line for these will be even further back from the main stage. • BBQs are not permitted at any time • Bring sunscreen and water if it is a hot day • Keep the site tidy and respect our neighbours. Rubbish bags are freely available and there are plenty of bins on site. And please do bring your wallets. The surpluses made from trading on the day help to fund the festival for the following year. Have a great day!

KelvedonIn Bloom by Lesley Hill
Kelvedon in Bloom is a not-for-profit community group that seeks to improve the village through floral decoration, natural habitat enhancement and environmental awareness campaigns. Activities are managed by a small committee, with a team of volunteers from across the village helping with planting and improvement projects. We aim to involve people of all ages and abilities as well as local businesses.
Each year we try to improve our displays by using different plants. Pensioners Piece, next to One Stop, Bellingham Place and Trews Gardens, through local donations, have been beautified with permanent planting areas by Kelvedon in Bloom. Over the years KiB has obtained several large grants totalling ÂŁ30K and in addition to all the containers, has provided the village with 5 seats, 8 litter bins and 6 dog bins. The pansies this last winter did not survive as well as in previous years, so next year we have in mind to use more Bellis Daisies, Polyanthus and Wallflowers instead. In the meantime, you may have, hopefully, noticed that we have replaced a lot of the dead pansies with 400 new ones, kindly donated free of charge by Perrywoods!
16 KPC09 Artwork A5.indd 16-17
Summer planting this year will take place at the beginning of June, so that we make the most of those new pansies. We will be using more geraniums this year, as they are more drought tolerant than the plants we usually use. Besides Kelvedon Parish Council, our other supporters are: Deal of Kelvedon (since 2002), Colne Office Supplies (since 2004), Kelvedon Clocks (since 2005), Labour Club (since 2008). Since 2011: Halcyon Health and Beauty; London Road Garage; Bhavani General Store and Post Office; Lucinda Wildin Hair; Bell House; B W Whiffen (Accountants); Clark and Carter of Cressing for Vehicle Restoration, The Little Fish Shop and Allen Estates, plus Eye Syte (since 2013) Co-Op Funeral Directors and Hooper

& Co, Tax Accountants (since 2014) and new this current year - Lady Funeral Directors at Hunnaball. Laminated signage is glued to each display. Kelvedon Community Association has also contributed to funds in the past and Crabbs Barn Wedding Venue sponsored the containers in Swan Street last year. Without these donations we would not be able to fill over 150 containers twice a year. Last Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church, our flowering tree was dedicated to those sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a tub or two (annual donation £25 per tub), or if you’d like to join our team of volunteers, known as ‘The Bloomers’, who plant, weed and water, please contact Lesley Hill. However little time you have to spare, it would help us enormously and give you the satisfaction of seeing the village continue to bloom beautifully, knowing that you have helped in some way. We are going to have a concerted effort to involve more people in tending the plants, especially watering – so if you have a tub near your house or business, please help us by giving them a good drink regularly. Thank you. The annual cost of planting all the containers is just over £2K, so we do our best to raise extra funds by holding Quiz Nights, usually in September, and by selling plants – the next sale will be on Saturday 11th June in the drive next door to and left of the Labour Club from 10am until 12 noon. Neighbourhood Plan By Geraldine Rowan
ENGAGING WITH OUR COMMUNITY We’re just completing our consultations with local groups and analysing the results of our community survey. So far, we’ve engaged with Scouts, Beavers, Guides, Brownies, School children at St Mary’s Primary Academy, Kelvedon and Feering Business Networking Group, Kelvedon and Feering Heritage Society, Rotary Club, WI and been involved in a number of meetings including KPC Parish Assembly and the Conservative Club AGM. The response from the groups is overwhelmingly that they really care about Kelvedon and want to ensure it remains a great place to live and work in. Everyone involved in discussions has been constructive and interested in providing input to the neighbourhood plan. There have been some common themes in the comments we’ve received across all groups. If we compare the responses from business owners and children, there are considerable overlaps despite the differences in years and experience. Here are some examples: Children like: • Park • River and ducks • Nice community and peaceful village Children don’t like: • Too much traffic and ‘ASBO’ driving • Only one car park • Lack of shops, especially sports/ sweets Businesses benefit from: • Access to A12 • Good business network • Public transport links • Access to a suitable customer base Businesses are constrained by: • Traffic congestion • Lack of parking The largest engagement project we have
undertaken so far was the community survey. This was delivered by hand to every household; all residents aged 16 and above were eligible to take part. Residents could either complete the paper survey and return it to one of the collection boxes around the village or access the survey online. When we have analysed the results we will be using the data to develop options for our Neighbourhood Plan. Everyone in the community will have the opportunity to attend public consultations where they can view the proposals based on the survey and other data we have collected. We’ll display the options for the Neighbourhood Plan between 9-17 July at several local venues; the times will vary to give everyone the best chance to attend and comment. The schedule so far includes: • Deals (one evening for commuters) • Kelvedon Library (9 July) • Conservative Club • Labour Club • Kelvedon Institute • St Mary’s Primary Academy (afternoon date to be confirmed) • Kelvedon Music Festival (16 July) • Catholic Church after mass (17 July) Where a date or time is not specified we will publish specific details as soon as they are available. We will also be at the station one morning distributing cards so that commuters can view and access the proposals online and comment. Once the consultation is complete we will be able to draft a Neighbourhood Plan based on the needs of the community and taking into account comments and feedback. This is a real opportunity for all to have their say in shaping the future of our village. Please sign up for our newsletter by visiting our website www.kelvedon-np.co.uk On the homepage you can click ‘keep me informed’, and add your details to ensure you don’t miss any of the latest news.

Kelvedon fire station By Nick Ezra
Those of you who have reason to visit the Parish Council Office or maybe are just picking up a Curry and happen to glance down the road by the side at the building with the clock on top, you may not know that it was once Kelvedon’s own fire station. Following a decision by Kelvedon Parish Council to establish its own Fire Brigade a new horse drawn manual pump was purchased by public subscription for £91.0s.0d from Messrs Shand Mason & Co. in 1897, the horses being supplied under contract from Moores the carriers. From the start Kelvedon Parish Council saw its fire engine as self-financing, with a scale of charges for attendance at fires. This was quite normal practise, with many small Councils publishing their charges. Throughout the time it was responsible for the fire engine the minutes show payments received, from insurance companies and land owners, as far away as Tolleshunt Knights, for services of the fire engine.
20 KPC09 Artwork A5.indd 20-21
The Fire Brigade Committee decided at the end of 1905 that the time had come to re-equip the firemen so 7 leather helmets with brass fittings and 1 brass helmet for the officer together with 6 axes in pouches were purchased from Merryweathers, but it was also found that the lack of a Fire House was becoming a problem. The horses were in a field off Swan Street, the engine was in a barn in the High Street and there was no tower to dry the hoses. The question of a Fire Engine Station was resolved in 1911 with purchase, for £5, of a small parcel of land from Miss Docwra. This is the current site of the Parish Council Office just off the High Street. Drawings were drawn up by Mr Stock of Colchester for £8. 2s. 0d and local firms tendered for the work. George Braddy (also the Fire Captain) came in lowest at £220. He actually came in for the satisfactory completion at £218. 2s. 0d., which was £1. 18s under budget, in 1913. Much of this came from charges for the fire engine.

During the First World War the first floor of the Fire Station was used by the 26th Battalion, The Kings Own (Liverpool) Regiment between 1916 and 1917 as an office, whilst they were stationed in Kelvedon. In fact, history records it being disbanded in the Fire Station, Kelvedon. Through the 1920’s and 1930’s alterations where made to allow motor appliances to be housed in the fire station, and during the Second World War the upstairs was again used as an office, this time by Air Raid Precautions Wardens. 1948 saw the end of all the small fire brigades and the Essex County Fire Officer decided to close Kelvedon and cover the village from Tiptree and Coggeshall. The old Fire Station has been used as the Offices and Council Chamber of the Parish Council since the 1970’s with parts being rented out as well. If you are interested in learning more about the Kelvedon Fire Brigade, this and much more on Kelvedon and Feering’s history in general can be found at the Feering and Kelvedon Local History Museum, Maldon Road. Entrance is free (donations welcomed) and the museum is open: Saturdays 9.30am to 12.30pm all year around. Mondays (March to October excluding Bank Holiday Mondays) from 2pm til 5pm. Access is through the library entrance and there is parking adjacent to the building so why not come and discover more of the fascinating history of the village you live in.

These RouTes weRe made FoR
walking
By David Larner
An article which appeared in the March edition of ‘Kelvedon News’ under the title ‘Walking for Health’ encouraged readers to adopt a more active lifestyle. This worthy objective had, however, been anticipated by the Parish Council who some three years ago offered an outdoor alternative to the treadmill and stationery bicycle by publishing a series of six circular walks varying in length from two to five miles. Using recognised footpaths wherever possible the routes cover most of Kelvedon but with brief excursions into the neighbouring parishes of Feering and Great Braxted. They include some of the most beautiful countryside in the area and this being predominately farmland, the paths are a constant reminder of the agricultural history that gave rise to the eponymous pea, a humble vegetable which put Kelvedon not only on the plate but on the map.
When taken together the six routes show the parish in its entirety and not simply as a piece of ribbon development connecting London Road to the bridge at the bottom of Feering Hill, while to walk them all would be an exercise not dissimilar to the ancient ceremony of beating the bounds but without the chastisement. Incidentally, it is clear from the configuration of this network that Kelvedon’s footpaths owe less to the Romans and their propensity for straight lines than to the pragmatism of our forebears who created them as a convenient means of getting to and from their place of work, the church or even the pub. Today, however, footpaths are almost entirely recreational; a fact recognised by Essex County Council who, in partnership with the Parish Council, spends both time and money in maintaining the fingerposts, waymarks,

,
bridges and styles to ensure their ease of access and continued viability. It behoves us, therefore, to make good use of this important amenity or before we know it the old dictum ‘use it or lose it’ may begin to apply. With the absence of mountains, this being Essex, and with no cattle to worry about, all Kelvedon’s footpaths are user friendly and the going is easy though care should be taken along roads and when crossing the railway line (Route 3). The paths are all waymarked and those featuring the river have well maintained bridges with adequate hand rails which mean that the only hazards likely to be encountered are overhanging branches, stinging nettles and the occasional dog.
In addition to the circular walks the Parish Council also produces a small illustrated booklet entitled ‘Following the Blackwater’ which describes a means of getting from Kelvedon to Coggeshall via a series of footpaths. Designed to keep within the confines of the river, though deviating from it for much of its length the route paves the way for a genuine riverside walk linking the two villages which it is hoped might one day become a reality. The guides can all be downloaded free of charge by visiting the relevant website at www.kelvedon.org.uk/village-circular-walks/ while hard copies and copies of ‘Following the Blackwater’ can be obtained from the Kelvedon Parish Council Office.

Rhododendron rule no. 1 – or is it…?
If in g m u n
If li e fr R to v a v a o fo th to
B w
One day you notice a beautiful rhododendron in a garden up the road. You decide to treat yourself to one, too. You get a lovely rhododendron at your local garden centre, plant it, water it well – and within weeks the leaves at the top turn yellow, with just the veins staying green. What’s gone wrong? Well, is there chalk in or beneath your garden soil? If so, this is the most likely culprit. Rhododendrons, together with azaleas, camellias, pieris and other so called ericaceous plants, simply cannot cope with lime (which comes from chalk) in the soil. Lime makes soil alkaline and in those conditions many plants cannot absorb iron that is naturally present in the soil. And they need iron like we need our vitamins. There is just one thing for it: dig up your rhodo, shake off the garden soil and plant it in a pot using a special lime-free (‘ericaceous’) compost. North Kent is a hard-water area, meaning
26 KPC09 Artwork A5.indd 26-27
our tap water contains lime (which scales up your kettle), so it is rainwater only for your rhododendron. Don’t let the compost dry out, feed the plant with a special ‘ericaceous’ feed, and there is no reason why it should not thrive. Too much hassle? Fine. There is a huge range of lime-tolerant plants that will love your chalky soil: lilac, clematis, thrift, to name just a few. But what about that garden up the road? A large chunk of Medway sits on top of the North Downs which are basically made of chalk, with a layer of clay with flint on top. This layer can be thick or thin. If you are in a valley, e.g. in Hempstead, the chalk may be just inches beneath your feet. On the ridges and plateaus between the valleys, e.g. Wigmore, you may be OK, with the chalk much further down.
n – ?
If not sure, check the pH (acidity/alkalinity indicator) of your soil with a simple test from a garden centre. A reading of 6.0 or above, sadly, means that rhododendrons are not for you – unless you like a challenge. Well, actually, that’s not quite true anymore. If you can afford to pay the premium price, lime-tolerant rhododendrons do now exist. They have recently been introduced from Germany under the name INKARHO Rhododendrons. The secret ingredient is a limetolerant rootstock, onto which many popular varieties have been grafted. The resulting plants are robust and hardy, and happy to grow in a variety of soils, including those with a certain amount of lime and pH of up to 7.5, i.e. neutral or slightly alkaline. They are not recommended for shallow chalk, though, so for many of us in the valleys, our ‘rhododendron envy’ may have to last for a bit longer. By Eva Girling of GARDENITY www.gardenity.co.uk

And finally...
more than just a handy man… A very nice bloke as well!
The Parish Office recently received the following email from a Mr Jim Smith about our village Parish Amenity Maintenance Warden, Lewis Hunt. ‘Hi there, this is just a quick email to mention the village and your handy man. I was doing some work on a friend’s house yesterday when I came across your handy man Lewis cutting. He stopped and told me where the shops where and listened to my rant about not being able to fit two large pot plants in my car from Perrywoods. He then offered to meet me on his lunch break and pick up the pots with me. True to his word he came and picked me up and took me to collect them.
I’ve all ways noted how nice the village is when I visited and how friendly people are but this was a new level. When I asked how I could thank him he just said tell people ‘what a nice bloke I am!’ He was a credit to the parish council and I thought it was worth an email.’ It is always great when visitors to our village get such a fantastic reception as it reflects on the community as a whole. Many thanks and well done Lewis!
