We are thrilled to announce the formation of the Ramsgate Town Team (RTT) comprising 11 members who represent a broad section of traders, business owners and residents in Ramsgate. Ramsgate is a great place to not only live, work and start a business in, but also it has the potential to be a popular tourist destination once more. We are acutely aware of the negative impact years of neglect can have on a town. This has been made more apparent in the last decade or so with the advent of Westwood Cross and the demise of Pleasurama and the Royal Victoria Pavilion. RTT’s stated mission is therefore to:
McNally Electrical Ltd Specialists in Electrical Installation, Inspecting & Testing All electrical work undertaken It’s important to ensure you electrical installations are safe and certified regularly, which is where we come in • Benefit from more than 20 years of experience • Specialists in inspection, testing and certification • City & Guilds qualified • No quibble guarantee for all of our work • Competitive rates • ELECSA approved contractor • Electrical installation and repairs • Portable appliance testing

Throughout their year in office, each Mayor of Ramsgate actively supports a number of charities, through organising events and fundraising. The current mayor, Councillor Kim Gibson, has nominated three charities to benefit this year: Admiral Nurses - an arm of Dementia UK, Thanet Galaxy Pan Disability Football Club and Artwise Youth Club, now The Avenue. The charity committee, chaired by Ralph Hoult, has many members who all volunteer their time and work with the mayor to organise charity events and fundraising. Events being held during this mayoral term include a Christmas ice rink, croquet and various quiz nights. The funds generated through the charity committee can only be distributed once a year, at the end of the mayor’s term, with the amount of money given to the charities determined by how much is raised through the year. The mayor will always choose deserving charities which will benefit the local community. You will find details of events on www.ramsgatetown.org. You can

Ramsgate Town Council supports a wide range of event organisations via its Events Fund. Bodies large and small can apply for support for their events. The fund is open to event organisers based in Ramsgate or those that can show that the event they are promoting will benefit Ramsgate. The council decides on the amount of funding that is appropriate for each event. In assessing each application, the council will look at the benefit to the community, whether the event has applied elsewhere for joint funding (a good idea) and what resources the organisers will contribute, whether in cash or in kind. It is advisable to be a part of REO (Ramsgate Events Organisers), chaired by Ralph Hoult, ralphhoult@aol.com An application form is available from The Custom House, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, or directly at www.ramsgatetown.org Examples of events part-funded from the Events Fund are: Thanet at War; Addington Street Fayre; May Fayre in Ellington Park; and Carols by Candlelight.

Active Ramsgate is a campaign run by Explore Kent which has created three new walking trail maps around Ramsgate and its coast, with the aim of bringing new people to enjoy our town and its surroundings as well as inspiring residents to go out and find out more about the locality. There’s a wide collection of other activities linked in, with cycling routes, boating trips and golf days as well. Linked to the trails is an incentive scheme to bring people into the
town’s businesses, in particular its restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. Anyone who puts up a special offer is publicised in the directory and promoted through online activity. Another aspect of the project is geo-caching, a fastgrowing interest amongst people of all ages utilising GPS technology and making the most of your smart phone. It’s a modern version of a treasure hunt, finding real hidden geo coins and tracking them across not only the UK but the world!

The Ramsgate Society The Ramsgate Society is a civic society founded in July 1964 to promote Ramsgate’s history, conserve its architectural heritage, and to help the town look to the future. The Society’s objectives are: To encourage high standards of architecture and town planning; to stimulate public interest in, and to care for, the beauty, history and character of the Town and its surroundings; to encourage the preservation and improvement of features of public amenity or historic interest in Ramsgate. This year, 2014, the Society celebrates 50 years of working for the people of Ramsgate. In that time it has worked hard to promote awareness of the town’s rich architectural heritage. The society has raised funds for conservation projects such as the recently completed restoration of fourteen seafront shelters. The Society also participates in planning matters, and seeks to encourage
architectural awareness and sensitive development. Society members keep in touch with activities through our quarterly magazine ‘About Ramsgate’, to which members are encouraged to contribute. Contributions are received from around the world from people who have a connection with the town and it is out of these contributions that rare items of interest about our past are sometimes gleaned. In its anniversary year the Society is looking forward to developing the Ramsgate Heritage Promenade, which will extend from the King George VI Park on the East Cliff to the Chines on the West Cliff. The Society is also working with other organisations in the town such as the Ramsgate Heritage Regeneration Trust, which is involved in the project to reopen the tunnels in June 2014. We hope that this will bring more visitors into the town to enjoy our unique heritage and history.

Ramsgate Tunnels Public tours of Ramsgate’s famous wartime tunnels will begin on June 1st, 2014, exactly 75 years after they were first opened in 1939. Having suffered as the most raided place in Britain during the Great War, Ramsgate was acutely aware of the dangers of aerial attack and coastal shelling as World War II approached. The local authority embarked on ambitious plans to provide underground shelter from attack within five minutes walk of every house. Despite Government policy to the contrary, Ramsgate was finally granted permission to construct nearly 2½ miles of tunnels 60 feet below the town with access from all major areas of population. These were the largest civilian Air Raid Precaution tunnels to be sanctioned by government. The tunnel design incorporated a former Victorian railway tunnel of almost one mile in length, which meant the complex was capable of sheltering up to 60,000 people. During the first Blitz of any town in Britain, Ramsgate suffered over 500 bombs in less than five minutes, completely devastating whole areas of the town. Remarkably, thanks to the safety of the tunnels, only 28 civilians lost their lives in this raid but almost
1,000 people were rendered homeless. Many moved the remains of their possessions into the former railway tunnel and took up permanent residence, some remaining below ground until war ended. Despite its location close to occupied France, Ramsgate was one of the safest towns in Britain. From the arrival of the railway and through the devastation of World War II, Ramsgate’s tunnels were one of the town’s most important assets. Hopefully, this will now become true again, this time as a visitor attraction.

Friends of Ellington Park As you may know, with the support of the people of Ramsgate, the Friends of Ellington Park was recently awarded £50,000 from the People’s Millions fund to develop a wildlife garden which will include a new pond as well as shrubs, wildlife habitat, seating areas and six sculptures. An added bonus is money to provide to permanent toilets in the park. Work will start in March 2014, and the wildlife garden will be the first major step in the regeneration of Ellington Park. Added to this, the group hopes to secure a grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund to install new fencing and gates and to renovate the park’s historic structures including the Victorian bandstand which sits at the centre of the park.
The Friends are enthusiastic about the future of the park and feel so fortunate to have a small army of dedicated volunteers and supporters who are working as a community to turn the park into Ramsgate’s biggest asset. Next year’s calendar is already beginning to fill up, so please look out for our annual May Fayre to be held on Saturday, May 17, the WW1 Commemoration Day and Drum Head Service on Sunday, July 13, and the Music Festival on Saturday, August 30. To find out more about Ellington Park and how to join our community, please email friendsofellingtonpark@ gmail.com, Twitter @EllingtonPark, Facebook Ellington Park, or call Dianne on 279275.

Ramsgate Town Website Ramsgate now has a town website to engage the community with news and events, developed and funded by the town council - www. ramsgatetown.org. The website, built for the council by HBR Limited, was launched in March last year, with the initial aim of being a central hub of information for town news, events and visitor information. It soon became apparent that it needed to expand, not only to become a website for visitors, but also for the local community. With the help of the town promoter, Suzy Humphries, who is also funded by RTC, ramsgatetown.org has gathered details of over 250 businesses, which are now listed on the website. History of the town and places to stay and eat are now available, as well as attractions, directions, places of interest and events. Within the first nine months of the website being launched, it has had over 100,000 visits. It is constantly evolving, including a home page redesign and an upgrade to the business directory for even easier access to Ramsgate businesses. www.ramsgatetown.org is always looking for new businesses and
events within Ramsgate to publicise; if you have an event or business that you would like put on there you can send an email to info@ramsgatetown.org or phone 598751 and speak to Dean Williams, the technical officer. We plan to develop, expand and improve the website for the use of the local community and visitors to Ramsgate, hopefully helping everyone to plan a day out or short stay by the seaside. Thanet District Council and local charity Project MotorHouse signed the option and transfer deed on Ramsgate’s derelict Motor Museum at the end of November. The charity now has two years during which it has to raise the estimated £1m required to stabilise the frame of the building. If it succeeds, the freehold passes from TDC to Project MotorHouse and the building will be turned into a multi-use venue
with restaurant/bar, indoor/outdoor cinema and theatre, a place where young people will be given the hands on experience they need to run their own businesses. It has taken three years to hammer out an agreement which protects the interests of the community and any potential liability to the council. The building is a vital part of Ramsgate’s infrastructure. It holds up the first 40 metres of the West Cliff Promenade.
The garden walls support the main access route into Ramsgate and the terrace walls support the cliff above Military Road. “The building’s frame is badly corroded so we really need to motor. Thankfully, TDC has given us money towards temporary propping,” said the project’s CEO, Janet Fielding. “We are also very grateful to Ramsgate Town Council for the help and support they have given us.”
The students at Ellington and Hereson School have been working with Project MotorHouse, local residents and Rippledown Environmental Education Centre on creating a permaculture garden. Funding for the garden has come from Thanet District Council, Kent County Council and Community First.
