From the Mayor When I became mayor last May I made it clear that I saw it as a job and it is one I have taken very seriously. I hope that I have been a great ambassador for Ramsgate wherever I have gone. I was asked to attend an Esperanto congress to which people came from all over the world - the fun I had learning a speech in Esperanto! I was blessed to be allowed to go to Conflans, our twin town in France, and was allowed to lay a wreath, in the name of Ramsgate, at the Arc de Triomphe. I attended a memorial service for Baron Jean de Selys Longchamps in Minster, where I met family members from Belgian royalty. They were very happy that Ramsgate was represented. I attended an opening of Age UK where I was asked to cut the ribbon. If they didn’t mean me to actually cut it, why give me a pair of scissors? A I was really humbled by the people who were in awe of meeting the mayor. In fact it was I who was in awe of them. I have been to castles, garden parties, civic services, etc. I have met cleaners, homeless people, lords and ladies, but I was always myself and I made sure people knew of Ramsgate and that they should visit. I travelled as far afield as London, and other mayors have travelled here. We attend each other’s functions to raise money for our own local charities and to raise awareness of our beautiful towns and villages. I have been part of a team raising money for Ramsgate charities. This year it is for the Admiral Nurses, who care for the carers of people with dementia, and the Thanet Galaxy disabled football team.
The best part was how people got involved to help in small or big ways. Gerry’s café held an ‘Allo ‘Allo day, where we all dressed up. Martin has bingo in the Newington Community Centre every Wednesday and they have one game where all the proceeds has been given to the mayor’s charity. Ralph Hoult has run quizzes, the casino held a quiz for us and there have been many other examples. Together we have raised a considerable sum of money. I helped change the format of National Holocaust day. I very much wanted to remind people it wasn’t just Jews that were slaughtered but people of all religions who have been killed and are still being killed today. I was able to invite children from our local schools and had a speaker in the King’s Theatre who helped to educate us on how we can forgive and move on. I spent many days in churches and cathedrals honouring those that have died for us. As a Christian and a royalist, I could not have been more blessed. I have been part of a tradition which has been around for hundreds of years and will go on for hundreds more. Sadly, I will not be standing again for personal reasons, but I would like to wish my successor the best of times and I hope they will enjoy being mayor. It’s not about the hats you wear or minding your Ps and Qs, but about being an ambassador for Ramsgate and remembering you’re not above anyone, we are all in this together. It’s just some of us have been blessed with the opportunity to be able to “shout out for Ramsgate”. Cheers! Cllr Kim Gibson Mayor of Ramsgate
Newington was identified as one of the 150 most deprived areas in the UK in December 2012. As a consequence, the Big Lottery fund has now awarded the residents £1 million to improve the area and make it a better place to live and work. Newington Big Local have already held a number of different engagement events to encourage the residents to get involved. These include a Launch Event, a Music Festival, a Halloween Party and a Christmas event. Big Local have also invested money and time into projects such as The Copse, a small woodland area opposite Newington Park, in which there are plans

to clear the overgrowth and make the area safe for the community to use. On June 1, the Big Lunch will be held at Newington Community Centre 11am3pm. Bring a packed lunch, meet new people in the area and play games. Big Local are holding Newington’s second Music Festival on July 12 at The Marlowe Academy. There are also plans to create a credit union in the area to help the residents who may be struggling with money management. Friends of Montefiore Woodland 2014 Spring Report What a difference a year makes when you have an enthusiastic team of volunteers working in a woodland. Some trees, which were deemed to be unsafe or unhealthy, have been removed, together with some of the fast growing saplings allowing more light into the lower levels and encouraging a greater diversity of wildlife. Large pieces of wood have been used to make rustic seating, log piles create shelter for wildlife and wood chippings are used to improve the pathways. Small native trees, donated by the Woodland Trust, have been planted by various members of the community and a further package of hedging plants has been applied for. Sponsored bird and bat boxes were installed in the woodland and monitored throughout the season. There was little take-up by the birds, but hopefully this year will be better now that they have had more time to choose their nesting sites. The wildflower meadow blossomed over
Village Green Application The Friends of Montefiore Woodland were delighted to learn from Ramsgate Town Council that it had been successful in its application to protect the Woodland from future development, by having the land registered as a Village Green. As Ramsgate Town Council states: “Village Green Status won’t affect the day-to-day work of the volunteers or council, but in the long term whatever happens in the

the summer, producing a wide range of wild flowers, which in turn encouraged many species of butterfly to visit. The meadow was strimmed at the end of the season and the cuttings spread in various areas of the Woodland. Members of the public were invited to join us for the Butterfly Day in August, when we participated in the Big Butterfly count. This was followed by a Bat Walk and Moth Evening, which were very well attended. People using the woodland frequently remark on the improvements and the fact that the area now feels safer and more welcoming. Lisa Hunt Chair Friends of Montefiore Woodland rest of Ramsgate there will still be a piece of woodland for residents and visitors to visit long into the future.” Having the land registered as Village Green Status means that it will be protected from development in perpetuity. Ramsgate has an intensive urban infrastructure and green spaces are at a premium. By protecting the woodland Ramsgate Town Council has ensured that one small piece of green space will remain available to the public, for quiet enjoyment far into the future.

The Micro Museum Relaunching as The Micro Museum after a break of nine years, Mike and Carol Deer’s museum, celebrating more than 30 years of collecting computers and home-based technology and games, opened in Church Hill, Ramsgate, at Easter. Visitors will see a selection from the owners’ private collection of vintage home computers, entertainment and other electronics. The focus is on the 1970s, 80s and 90s, when computers were changed forever from being tools used solely by scientists and academics to become an invaluable part of everyday life. The history, ideas and some of the major inventions leading up to and through this important time are illustrated. Displays of home computers, games, handhelds, calculators, toys, accessories, novelties and more will interest, intrigue and amuse. There is a history quiz - designed for children, but anyone can have a go.

Finding all the correct answers in the museum earns a fun certificate. The youngest visitors aren’t left out. They can search the displays for hidden toys (all with computer-related names, of course) and be awarded a mini “I found them” certificate.
Then, to round off the visit, adults and children alike can try playing on some of the classic and retro–style games, or test their patience keying in a simple program on a computer - just to see what happens. Discover, see and, most importantly, enjoy yourself in The Micro Museum!
Ramsgate Bowls Club
Have you ever wanted to take a croquet mallet and hit someone over the head with it, although perhaps not literally? Well, the opportunity to get to grips with a mallet will present itself at the Ramsgate Croquet Club’s public open day on Bank Holiday Monday, May 26 (1-5 pm). All the equipment you need will be provided, so flat shoes and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions of the day are the only requirement. Croquet is an increasingly popular sport for both young and old. It provides gentle exercise, the chance to socialise with like-minded people, and over the years Ramsgate’s active junior section has provided the croquet world with several international players. Ramsgate Croquet Club is located on the Royal Esplanade, West Cliff, CT11 0EY.
Ramsgate Bowls Club on the Westcliff has the use of two greens with 12 rinks, which are open to from April to September, 10am to 6pm. Anyone is welcome to come and try the game. We offer four free taster sessions and coaching is available, but we welcome visitors at all times and refreshments are available. We also would like people to pop along and see our games, details of which will be on Facebook. We hope to have our own website shortly. The club’s open tournament will be from July 28 to August 9 and all bowlers are welcome to apply.

Ramsgate Town Team The first quarter of 2014 has been a time of consolidation for the Ramsgate Town Team (RTT), who have already started partnership working with the Friends of Ramsgate Seafront (FORS) on cleaning up designated areas of Ramsgate and its environs. Full details of all RTT schemes are released and regularly updated on the Ramsgate Town Team Facebook page www.facebook.com/ TheRamsgateTownTeam and we are always keen to receive new suggestions on how we can help improve the town and forge links with existing stakeholders. Further projects are scheduled for the second quarter of the year, including a Town Trader’s partnership scheme, identification of existing and new improved signage and wayfinding and working with other stakeholders on recruitment of volunteers. This will enable the team to plan for further projects throughout the remainder of the year. We are fortunate to have been allocated £60,000 to spend on the town by Thanet District Council and another £10,000 of public money by Laura Sandys MP.

Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group The Thanet Local Plan will allocate development in the District and will be published soon. The public can respond by designing their own plan to meet their own locality. They cannot change the overall numbers, but they can ensure that any development is well designed and appropriate to the area they live in. They can do this via a Neighbourhood Plan. A Neighbourhood Plan requires hard work and perseverance by its supporters. A Neighbourhood Steering Group has been setup to assist any Neighbourhood planners with help and advice. If you think that you could contribute to the formation of a Neighbourhood Plan contact Richard Styles on 01843 598751 and he will put you in touch with the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group.

Godfrey's Garlic
Godfrey's Garlic is a giant garlic bred by Godfrey Power on his plot at Chilton Lane East Allotments in Ramsgate. It is a true garlic yet it grows to the size of Elephant garlic, which is actually not a garlic but more closely related to the Leek. We'd like to thank Godfrey for his generosity in providing a large number of cloves for us to plant in the Kitchen Garden at Standen. We are growing it exclusively for the Cafe but will keep some back to plant for next years crop.
P
Garlic is a popular crop at Standen in the Barn Cafe and with the public, so we are also growing Albigensian Wight, Avignon Wight, Lautrec Wight, Picardy Wight, Solent Wight, and Elephant Garlic. The Kitchen Garden Volunteers are looking forward to harvesting the garlic later in the year and we are all expecting Godfrey's Garlic to be a real winner! Carolyn Hibbert, Kitchen Gardener. The Ramsgate Tunnels HRH The Duke of Kent has very kindly agreed to reopen the tunnels with an official ceremony as his father did in 1939. Prince Edward, the Queen’s first cousin, will cut the ribbon at the tunnels on Tuesday 27 May before taking a tour across Thanet. Details will be available via the local media nearer the time. There will be a public event to celebrate this, which will be held on the 75th anniversary of the royal opening Sunday 1 June. The 1940s themed event will be held outside the tunnel entrance on Marina Esplanade and will include entertainment, displays and stalls. Entertainment will be led by A Salute To The 1940s variety show, packed full of the stars who kept the nation entertained during the dark days of war. See www.spiritofthe40s.co.uk or www. facebook.com/Spiritofthe40s The Ramsgate Tunnels comprise a former Victorian railway tunnel and two and a half miles of deep shelter air raid precaution tunnels with entrances around the town. The railway tunnel is almost one mile long and was opened in 1863 to bring the London, Chatham and Dover Railway to the Ramsgate Harbour station, adjacent to Ramsgate Sands.

As the Second World War approached, Ramsgate Borough Council embarked on an ambitious but controversial plan to create a network of deep shelter tunnels linking to the former railway tunnel, closed to trains in 1926. Despite initial resistance from government, the plan was finally given the go-ahead and the network was formally opened by The Duke of Kent on 1 June 1939. Stories of life in the tunnels abound; from the dark days of war when the railway tunnel evolved into an underground city with over 1,000 permanent residents to the exploits of later urban explorers, who couldn’t resist the temptation to explore the unique atmosphere of the “Wind Tunnels”. Three-quarters of a century later the tunnels are due to reopen to the public.

Ramsgate seafront is set to play host to a four-day music festival over the late May bank holiday weekend. Running from May 23 - 26, the Ramsgate Front Festival will celebrate the best of local music and musicians. Organised by the Friends of Ramsgate Seafront (FORS), with financial support from Ramsgate Town Council, Thanet District Council and others, the festival will celebrate the town’s seafront and local residents. The weekend has four days of music with clear musical themes on each day. To kick the festival off there will be an evening of ska, northern soul and reggae on Friday starting at 6pm. Saturday will see the best local DJs playing a variety of contemporary dance music on both stages.
Sunday is all about live music played by local bands. And to finish the festival, Monday will be a party day. “We are extremely excited about the musicians who will be playing for us. It really is the best of local talent playing for a local crowd”, said Duncan Smithson of FORS. In addition to the music, there will be a variety of community stalls, food and drink and a beer tent.

Friends of Ellington Park These are exciting times for the Friends of Ellington Park. Our next major event is the annual May Fayre, taking place on Saturday, May 17 (from midday). There will be plenty of music on the bandstand, a wide selection of food and drink, our famous Fun Dog Show, and more attractions than ever before. On Sunday, July 13, we are holding Ramsgate’s main World War One commemoration event. We will be decorating the park with red flowers and ribbons, and there will be marching bands in full colour and a drumhead service. Proceeds from this event will be split between the Poppy Appeal and the Friends of Ellington Park. We are also pleased to report that the Wildlife Garden Project has been progressing excellently: the temporary beechwood fencing is in; with the help of dedicated volunteers, hedge-planting is
well under way; pond plans are also well in advance; and toilets are to be installed in the coming months. By late June, we will know whether the first phase of our exciting Heritage Lottery Fund application, for the £2.2 million regeneration of the park, has been successful. If so, we will need to raise £220,000 of match funding and will require all your support to help us proceed to the next stage. Even if we are not successful (this time round), it won’t stop us working towards the park’s full regeneration, including a new lease of life for the bandstand, improved children’s area, refreshments and a visitor centre. To get involved, please contact our volunteering co-ordinator, Diane Reilly, on 01843 279275. You can also follow us on Facebook (EllingtonPark) or Twitter (@FofEPRamsgate).
Active Ramsgate Active Ramsgate is a joint project between Ramsgate Town Council and Explore Kent. Its aims are to increase visitor numbers to Ramsgate and to offer activities for those visitors. Cycling is fun, healthy and a wonderful way to reconnect with the landscape around you. Whether you’re looking for panoramic views across the channel, an insight into some fascinating local history, or you simply want to get away from it all on a unique Kent holiday, you’ll find the routes from the Active Ramsgate programme as enjoyable as they are accessible. Take the 27 mile (43.5km) Viking Coastal Trail on the Isle of Thanet peninsular, the point where Vikings first landed in Britain. Designed to suit both experienced cyclists, novices and children, it includes beautiful sandy beaches and bays, often against a backdrop of spectacular chalk cliffs, some pretty Kentish Villages with ancient churches and a host of partner shops, restaurants, inns and attractions offering some exclusive discounts. Active Ramsgate also offers walking trails taking in the coast and the architectural points of interest in Ramsgate. St Laurence Church is the oldest of the four churches which make up the Team Parish of St Laurence-in-Thanet and can trace its history back to 1062. The Grade I listed church is the oldest building in Thanet, apart from Minster Abbey. The architecture is a mix of Norman, Early English and Victorian. St Laurence is rich in history - Archbishop Thomas Cranmer preached in the church in 1536. The East Window commemorates the life of Queen Victoria, who worshipped in the church when visiting Ramsgate as a child. Victorian additions include the enlarged nave, a pulpit installed in 1890 and alterations to the tower. A medieval font was discovered in a church on Romney Marsh, restored and brought to the church in 2005. The historic churchyard covers three and a half acres and contains over 1,400 graves dating back as far as 1656. As well as providing an insight into the social history of the parish, the churchyard is managed for the benefit of wildlife and is an oasis for flora and fauna. The Friends of St Laurence

St. Augustine’s Premier History and Culture Week at St. Augustine’s: May Half Term, May 25-31 St. Augustine’s, on Ramsgate’s Westcliff, is one of Ramsgate’s most interesting heritage and cultural sites. It was built by the internationally-renowned architect, Augustus Pugin, who also designed much of the Houses of Parliament. Ramsgate was his home and, as well as having eight children, called St. Augustine’s “my own child.” Pugin, an international figure, is buried inside this spectacular building. We are proud to announce a series of exciting events in May: Ramsgate’s premier history and culture week - St. Augustine Week 2014 (May 25-31). We have concerts, lectures, a coach trip day, and more. This promises to be an informative and revealing week for all who come, and excellent diversions for the half term holidays. All are welcome.
St. Augustine’s is one of Ramsgate’s gems that is being rediscovered by local people as well as national and international visitors. Pugin is buried here, in his own creation, and so draws people who admire him and his outstanding work. The church also contains the last known remains of St. Augustine who landed close to Ramsgate in 597AD bringing Christianity to England, and so brings pilgrims to the shrine. The Heritage Lottery Fund are supporting the development of St. Augustine’s through essential works on the roofs, stonework and windows; local people have generously supported the restoration of special pieces of the world-class stained glass. The Heritage Lottery Fund are supporting a bid for a new project which will see a complete Education, Research, and Visitor Centre established on the site which will provide visitors with proper facilities and exhibitions, helping them really understand the glories of St. Augustine’s.

This year Phase 3 of the restoration will take place, involving more work to the roofs and one of the most spectacular windows. There will be displays of the work and samples of the materials on site during the summer, and more events will be advertised - keep your eyes peeled! St. Augustine Week runs May 25-31, half term holiday. The week starts on Sunday 25 with a concert in St. Augustine’s entitled The Just Man, sung by Victoria Consort. On Monday 26 at 7pm come and hear the story of how St. Augustine changed the course of England’s history by landing near Ramsgate in 597AD. Go to Minster Abbey on Tuesday at 2.45pm for a tour of one of the oldest and most peaceful places in Thanet. Sign up for a coach tour of important sites connected with St. Augustine in east Kent, including Canterbury sites (10am4.30pm), and in the evening hear how our ancestors remembered Augustine across the centuries (7pm). Have an afternoon walk on Friday seeing the buildings of Ramsgate in a new Puginesque light with Catriona Blaker, and in the evening listen to Dr. Jamie Jacobs explain Pugin’s relationship with industrial production. The crowning of the week will be the procession from the Hugin Viking Ship to St. Augustine’s Cross, setting off at 2.30pm, which will wind through Cliffsend to that historic English site, followed by a walk to Minster Abbey where there will be refreshments. A youth event will be on the Friday evening, 6pm-9pm, at Minster Abbey with members of L’Arche Community and Catholic Underground.

Letters Dear Ramsgate Town Council, I have recently moved to Ramsgate and appreciate your Community Ad Magazine which I find very useful, as it advises us of your future projects, etc. I was particularly interested to learn of the proposed plans for the old Westcliff Hall. I note that the Edwardian pavilion at the Main Sands stands empty. Recent news is that funding for sports projects is now easier to obtain. At the end of the recent winter Olympics, the commentator Graham Bell emphasised that many of the athletes commenced at indoor venues – refining their skills skateboarding, skating, gym, etc. Could the council consider sports use for the pavilion, rather than further pubs and restaurants? Ramsgate used to be famous for sport, with its healthy seawater marina pool. Could the loss of that 1930s icon be redeemed by “The Edwardian Sport Pavilion”? Dr P Haslett Boayan
Please send letters intended for publication to Richard Styles, Town Clerk, Ramsgate Town Council, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, CT11 8LP or email info@ramsgatetown.org and mark your correspondence “Community Ad Magazine”. If there is insufficient space to publish all the correspondence received, we may instead post it on the Town website. 32
Dear Ramsgate Town Council, We moved to Thanet 15 years ago and find that Ramsgate always seems to be left out when it comes to making it a better town. The casino has been closed for a long time now, which is a waste. Instead of it being vandalised it could be used for somewhere for the kids to go. It would make a great skating rink and give them something to do. We live near the Pleasurama building site, which was going to be apartments and shops. It has been left to become a dumping ground and does not look good for the town. Also we have a dog and have noticed that there are not enough bins for dog mess, or waste bins, so the owners are leaving it in a bag and discarding it anywhere. Some are also just letting the dogs mess and not picking it up. The worst place is the steps near Augusta Road. There is always mess on the steps where the children walk down to the beach. I think that if a bin and a camera could be put there it would stop a lot of people, and the vandals as well. Ramsgate always seems to start something to make the town look better but it never gets finished. It’s not fair that Margate is being made to look better, just because they have the Turner Centre. Ramsgate has a lot of history and it could be a lovely town again if jobs were finished. Thank you for reading this letter. We all wish for Ramsgate to be a place where we can be proud to live. Mr & Mrs C North
Did you know that our town is twinned with Conflans (France), Chimay (Belgium), and Frederikssund (Denmark)? The link-up is managed by the Ramsgate Twinning Association, which is run by the current mayor at any given time, who acts as president, and three officers: the chairman, Sally Rosebourne; the treasurer, Mary Watts; and the secretary, Cllr Par Moore. We hold coffee mornings and other fundraisers to attract new members, whom we make very welcome. We also organise visits between the twinned towns. A party of 40 children and some adults were due to come to Ramsgate for a day from Chimay in Belgium on May 2. They hoped to see the Maritime Museum, Manston Spitfire Museum, Hornby Hobbies and Dickens House before they return home. Visitors from Conflans and Chimay are planning to come to Ramsgate in May to play petanque. They range from teenagers to older people. There is no age restriction on playing petanque. There is a youth programme in Chimay in August and we are trying to arrange

with local Ramsgate schools to have a contingent of young people to go for up to a week to be involved in sports, art, music and learning about the towns and what they can do. This is open to exchange visits; also attending will be a party from Hanau, in Germany, which is twinned with Conflans. A party will be going to Conflans, 30km from Paris, to attend a ceremony called the Pardon, which is a service quite like our Armistice Day. This takes place at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, with a buffet later at Conflans Town Hall. All members are invited to book a place on the coach from Ramsgate to Conflans.

The Ramsgate Society was founded in July 1964 to promote Ramsgate’s history, conserve its architectural heritage, and to help the town look to the future. The society’s objectives are: “To encourage high standards of architecture and town planning; to stimulate public interest in, and to care for, the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings; to encourage the preservation and improvement of features of public amenity or historic interest in Ramsgate.” Members are kept abreast of the society’s activities through monthly meetings, the website (www.ramsgatesociety.org.uk) and the quarterly magazine About Ramsgate. The recently redesigned magazine publishes news relating to Ramsgate’s heritage, as well as information and memoirs of the town’s past from members, and anyone with a connection to the town. In its anniversary year the society is involved with several exciting projects. The Ramsgate Heritage Promenades project aims to regenerate the seafront between the King George VI Park on the East Cliff to the Chines on the West Cliff. The society is also working with

the Ramsgate Heritage Regeneration Trust, which is involved in the project to reopen Ramsgate’s tunnels in June. We hope that these projects will bring more visitors into the town to enjoy our unique heritage and history. In July this year the Ramsgate Society will open a shop and office at 19-21 Harbour Street. This will provide the society with a much-needed town centre presence: a place to promote our activities and provide information to members and visitors. On July 12, the society will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a lunch at the Royal Temple Yacht Club, followed by a garden party in Vale Square on July 13. If you are not already a member of the Ramsgate Society, why not celebrate its 50 years by joining now - your town needs you!
